Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million. While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month. But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise </h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively.

FII stake in Indian equities dips to a 12-year low

The ongoing <keyword id="20168812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sell-off" source="keywords">sell-off</keyword> by <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword> continues to loom large on <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword>. In October so far, <keyword id="19950996" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="FIIs" source="keywords">FIIs</keyword> (foreign institutional investors) have already withdrawn Rs 74,732.20 crores. Not for a single day this month have FIIs poured money into <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>. The sell-off started on October 1, when foreign investors withdrew Rs 5,579.35 crore. The highest withdrawal of this month came on October 3. 2024, when FIIs sold Rs 15,243.27 crore worth of assets. Yesterday, i.e. on October 17th, FIIs pulled out Rs 7,421.40 crore from the markets. Experts state that FIIs are continuously putting pressure on Indian stocks, but the situation is expected to improve in the coming weeks with a sharp recovery anticipated. "We remain optimistic as the FII selling may have crossed the half way mark already and as it tones down, the domestic flows will help a recovery. When the recovery happens it will sharp and concentrated, giving long term investors motivation to stay put during the harrowing volatility of a roller coaster market that has repeatedly tested support levels but remains oversold, hence ripe for a bounce sometime in the next few weeks" said Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert to ANI. Between January and October 2024, foreign investors have invested a net of 1,87,298 crore in India. This year, apart from the current sell-off, January, April and May also saw <keyword id="23593694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-outflows" source="keywords">investment outflows</keyword> by FIIs. The intense selloff comes right after September, when foreign investors invested a record Rs 93,538 crore in the Indian markets. June, July and August 2024 had also seen positive inflows from foreign investors of about Rs 41,757 crore, Rs 48,796 crore and Rs 25,493 crore respectively. However, a resilient, strong domestic investor base is keeping Indian markets afloat. <keyword id="21714171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DIIs" source="keywords">DIIs</keyword> (domestic institutional investors) have been consistent buyers throughout this month, largely balancing the outflows prompted by FIIs. In October so far, DIIs have invested about Rs 68,961.37 crore in the market, with the highest monthly inflow coming in on October 7th. While DIIs invested Rs 13,245.12 crore in Indian markets on that day, foreign investors withdrew Rs 8,293.41 crore. Yesterday i.e. on October 17, 2024, DIIs invested Rs 4,979.83 crore in the markets. At present, experts note that DIIs are flush with cash at the moment, with <keyword id="20052797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-inflows" source="keywords">mutual fund inflows</keyword> reaching an all-time high of Rs 24,509 crore in September 2024, a record 52.78% jump from the corresponding year ago period, where they stood at Rs 16,042 crore. Generally, keeping around 3-5% of their assets in cash is considered an acceptable practice amongst mutual fund houses. As per reports, mutual funds are currently in possession of Rs 1.86 lakh crore worth of cash, which constitutes 5.03% of their total AUM as of September 2024.

For now expect range bound price action , with stocks moving on their earnings announcements." Currently, Nifty is positioned around the support levels of 22,400 - 22,300, with a short-term negative trend. Analysts suggest the possibility of an upside bounce as long as the support at 22,300 holds, but a breach of this level could lead to further weakness in the short term. Analyzing the Nifty Open Interest (OI) Data, the highest OI on the call side was observed at 22,500 and 22,700 strike prices, while on the put side, the highest OI was at 22,500 strike price. Meanwhile, Asian stocks saw marginal gains, with Japan's Nikkei 225 surging up to 1.6% and Australian equities also showing positive movements. The yen depreciated after Japan's top currency official, Masato Kanda, suggested no immediate need for government intervention in the market. Optimism surrounding China's supportive policies and expectations for a continuation of economic policies in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's potential third term contributed to the positive sentiment in global equity markets. Sensex-Nifty rally at opening bell, riding high on global market surge

New Delhi [India], July 24 (ANI): Indian Benchmark indices opened in negative territory as the <keyword id="19908389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Budget" source="keywords">Union budget</keyword> proved to be a non-event to the <keyword id="20346556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-participants" source="keywords">market participants</keyword>. The <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> opened in red at 80,343.38, down 85.43 or 0.11 per cent while the <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> 40 also opened in red at 24445.00, down 34 points or 0.14 per cent. The Bank Nifty showed a similar trend opening at 51657.70, lower by 120.60 points or 0.23 per cent. Among the sectoral stocks Bank, Auto, Financial Services, IT, Pharma, Private Bank, Realty, and Healthcare traded in red during the initial hours of the trade. On the other hand the sectoral stocks of FMCG, Media, Metal, PSU Bank, Consumer Durables, Oil and Gas traded in red. Asian markets mirrored Wall Street's losses, with Japan's Nikkei 225 and South Korea's Kospi both trading lower on Wednesday. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index futures pointed to a flat opening. In the US, major indices closed slightly lower on Tuesday amidst earnings reports from Alphabet and Tesla. The Dow Jones declined by 57.35 points (0.14 per cent) to 40,358.09, the S&amp;P 500 dropped 8.67 points (0.16 per cent) to 5,555.74, and the Nasdaq Composite edged down by 10.22 points (0.06 per cent) to 17,997.35. Tesla shares fell 2 per cent in regular trading and an additional 8 per cent in after-hours trading, while Alphabet saw a modest increase of 0.1 per cent.

Nifty, Sensex yet to cheer Union Budget 2024 as stock markets open in red

Eventually, the Nifty50 index settled the day a tad below the 25200 level, with a cut of 0.32 percent after a very long haul. "The recent fall could be seen as a breather with no alterations to the ongoing trend. Furthermore, the unwavering strength of the Bulls demonstrated throughout the session reflects the positive sentiment in the domestic market. From a technical standpoint, the pullback post the setback construes a positive scenario, with strong support being seen around the 25,100-25,080 spot zone for Nifty, followed by the sacrosanct support of the 25,000 mark in the comparable period. Mr. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd highlighted that selective buying in heavyweight stocks helped trim the losses as the session progressed, with the index eventually closing at 25,198, down by 0.3%. Sector-wise, the trend was mixed; pharma, realty, and FMCG sectors saw gains, while IT and metal sectors faced profit-taking. "This move indicates that the bulls are still holding their ground, though consolidation could occur if global pressures intensify. We recommend maintaining a focus on stock selection and trade management, with the support zone for Nifty remaining strong at 24,850-25,000", he said.

The 30-share BSE Sensex plunged by 617.30 points or 0.83 per cent to settle at 73,885.60. The barometer hit the day's low of 73,668.73 due to selling in blue-chips. The NSE Nifty dropped by 216.05 points or 0.95 per cent to close at 22,488.65. Benchmark indices closed at lifetime high levels on May 23 which triggered profit-taking amid growing nervousness among investors ahead of the results of the Lok Sabha polls on June 4. Since then, Nifty and Sensex have declined around 2 per cent in the five straight sessions. "The benchmark index is taking cues from the US market as treasury yields continue to climb following the stickiness of global inflation, delaying the central bank's interest rates cut policy," Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said. From the Sensex pack, Tata Steel, Titan, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Nestle India, Tata Motors and JSW Steel were the biggest laggards. "Meanwhile, the broader market continued the weak trend, led by profit booking, due to feeble closing of monthly expiry owing to lack of interest to hold short-term positions, as exit poll is slated in the weekend," Nair said. In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai settled lower. European markets were trading with gains, while US markets ended in the negative territory on Wednesday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 5,841.84 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. The last phase of polling is scheduled for June 1. The results of the ongoing general elections will be declared on June 4. Global oil benchmark Brent Crude fell 0.41 per cent to USD 83.19 a barrel. This resulted in the share of FPI holdings in the market declining to a 10-year low of 19.03% as on September 30, 2022, down by 17 basis points from 19.20% as on June 30, 2022. “This further showcases the rise of domestic investors and the huge counter-balancing role they have played to foreign investors. To also put this in perspective, as on March 31, 2015, FPI share was 23.30% while the combined share of DII (domestic institutional investors), retail and HNI (high networth individuals) was just 18.47%,” said Pranav Haldea, MD at Prime Database Group. Keeping aside the first half of November when FPIs poured in ₹28,888 crore, they have been selling aggressively in the last couple of months because of macro concerns and weak inflation data in India. “<keyword id="6368141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fiis" source="Orion">FIIs</keyword> sold heavily in the September quarter because they were not expecting inflation to come down. Also the dollar index was rising. However, now, with positive data coming in, FIIs have bought a good amount of equities in November so far. Chouhan sees FIIs buying internet and software-based companies where earnings have come in strong. Also, “BFSI, capital goods and real estate are prime sectors where they are focusing and which will witness inflows in next six months,” said Chouhan. The last time FIIs bought more Indian equities than in May was back in February 2021, when they invested ₹42,044 crore. Robust FII buying helped the benchmark indices stage a recovery after remaining volatile earlier this year. While the Nifty50 index rose 2.6% in May, the Sensex closed the month with gains of 2.5%. All in all, the gains of May helped both the indices wipe out their losses in 2023 so far. As a result, the Nifty50 is now up 1.6% year-to-date, while the Sensex is up 2.1%. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 1.02 per cent to USD 84.29 a barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 1,071.93 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data. Domestic equity markets were closed on Wednesday on account of Maharashtra Day. Snapping its two-day winning run, the BSE benchmark declined 188.50 points or 0.25 per cent to settle at 74,482.78 on Tuesday.
