Sikri, as the Ombudsman, will be responsible for investigating queries/complaints raised by users. “The sports gaming industry provides an untapped opportunity for sports lovers to showcase their sports knowledge and come closer to their favorite sport. As the industry prepares for the next wave of sports enthusiasts, as a self-regulatory industry body it is important to protect and educate operators and users about the industry and its best practices,” said Justice A K Sikri, Ombudsman, IFSG. IFSG currently has 32 members across fantasy sports operators and sports analytics firms. The Indian fantasy gaming market is projected to touch $5 billion in the next two years and has players like Dream11, Mobile Premier League leading the industry. Dream11, which has over 60 million users is associated with major cricketing events like the Indian Premier League and the ICC World Cup. MS Dhoni is its brand ambassador. Dream11 also became India’s first gaming unicorn in April 2019. Another player in the same field is Mobile Premier League which gained 20 million users within seven months of its launch. It also raised $35.5 million from Sequoia India. MPL has Indian skipper Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced Dream11 as the official partner for the IPL. In a four-year exclusive contract, Dream11 will also take over the official fantasy game of IPL. Dream11 has IPL to thank for, for increasing its users over the years. The startup has grown from 300,000 users in 2004 to 51 million users today. Just during last year’s IPL, the gaming startup gained over 20 million users, Bhavit Sheth, COO and co-founder of Dream11 told Business Insider. Now, with the official partnership the numbers are only set to grow. “Dream11 is deeply integrating with the IPL, which is set to grow from its 1.4 billion TV impressions and 200 million online viewers in 2018, to achieve our goal of growing from 51 million users to 100 million users in 2019,” said Harsh Jain, CEO and co-founder of Dream11. The startup which is on the brink of becoming India’s first gaming unicorn has been around for 11 years, although it saw its popularity reach the peak with last year’s IPL. Gaming startup Dream11 strikes gold as the official partner of IPL

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Julia Broome moved from LA to NYC and returned after 5 months, but she doesn't regret the experience.</li><li>Her apartment was small and expensive, and the job she moved for ultimately changed. </li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Julia Broome, a 27-year-old social media manager who moved from LA to NYC. It has been edited for length and clarity. Growing up, I often heard people talk about New York City, or I'd see it on TV shows like "Gossip Girl" and "Sex and the City." It was always seen as a dream place to live. So last year when I was 26 years old and I was offered a job opportunity in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wha-to-know-before-moving-to-new-york-2014-8">NYC</a>, I knew it was something to consider.I'd visited, and I loved it. There's something about New York that makes you feel electric. I loved the ambition, the energy, and the drive that people seemed to carry. The vibe was great and the men I met were even better. I couldn't help but romanticize the city, and I could really envision myself living there. Still, the choice wasn't easy. I grew up in Calabasas, California and it felt hard leaving it behind. LA was my home, and it felt comfortable. Yet NYC felt exciting and new, and with a job opportunity I couldn't pass up, I decided to make the move. I placed the majority of my things in storage and packing two massive bags, and then I hopped on a plane.<h2>Walking in NYC</h2>Before moving to NYC, I remember thinking how much I'd love to walk everywhere through the "concrete jungle," as they call it. But when it became my reality, I saw that it wasn't exactly what I pictured. As I walked the sidewalks, I felt the need to constantly swivel my head to check my surroundings. I was always competing for sidewalk space, and as a woman especially, I was on high alert to make sure I was safe. It was also easy to run into things — including the trash that was on the side of the street, which smelled disgusting. And if I walked with a friend, we constantly had to yell just so we could hear each other over trucks, ambulances, and construction work around us. It always felt like a competition to see who could yell the loudest.<h2>The housing in NYC</h2>There was also the living situation. In LA, I'd been used to paying for an expensive apartment — one that had more room than I needed and was beautiful, too. But when I finally found a place and moved to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-nyc-neighborhood-hudson-yards-2019-10">Hudson Yards</a>, my money definitely didn't stretch as far. People in New York joke about the living situation. Places are small and expensive and the buildings are much older.I moved into a one-bedroom apartment with a roommate — I slept in the living room, and my bed was next to the kitchen table. We didn't have air conditioning and the apartment building was old. Truthfully, I think I would have been able to push past these things — if it weren't for what happened with my job. <h2>Starting a job in NYC</h2>I'd moved to start a new job — a role I just couldn't pass up. While the company was brand new, I was friends with those who were starting it and the opportunity felt promising. They knew my work, I knew theirs, and I was going to help build the company with them.But not long after I got there, the company changed direction and so did my job description. The founder had a change of heart, which often happens when it comes to business and start-ups — but still it was a big shock to me. I felt let down. I had already uprooted my whole life and taken a big chance by moving. I felt myself spiral. They say New York City will chew you up and spit you out, and that's how it felt to me. <h2>Giving NYC a fair chance</h2>I never truly struggled with depression and anxiety until I started living in New York, yet I didn't want to go back home. I was embarrassed that things weren't working out, and I didn't want to give in so soon. I thought about what my mom, who I lost to pancreatic cancer five years ago, would've said to me: "Keep going, keep pushing. You're only young once." I knew she'd be proud of me for putting myself out there and of how hard I was trying. I also thought about my dad back home in LA too. He wanted me to love New York, and I felt sad telling him I didn't. I didn't want to let my parents down — or let down anyone who asked about my New York experience. But after five months of trying, I had to be honest with myself. I knew I had to go home. So I did. When I came back to LA I had a new perspective on the things I had taken for granted. The beach, nature, the clean air, the hiking — I'd missed those things when I was gone and felt so fortunate to have them back.<h2>At the end of the day, I still love NYC</h2>They say New Yorkers aren't nice, but that wasn't my experience. I found the people I met to be kind, ambitious, motivated, and driven. I also loved the city's food scene, and the dating game — the people I met were far less flaky than what I was used to in LA.Above all, I loved the energy of New York. But I'd realized that as much as I like those things, for me they are great for a couple weeks at a time, not every day. Now I tell people that moving to New York was the "best-worst" decision I've ever made, and I'm glad I made it.It broke me out of my comfort zone, which is something I think everybody should try to do. According to the FIFS-KPMG report, OFS operators’ gross revenues stood at INR 2,400+ crore for the FY20 as compared to INR 920+ crore in FY19 an increase of almost 3X over a period of 12 months. Indian OFS platforms have shown a rapid increase in their user-base YoY, growing from 2 million in 2016 to 90 million in 2019. Similarly, the number of OFS platforms in India has increased from less than 10 operators in 2016 to 140+ operators by the end of 2019. The OFS market recorded a CEA (Contest Entry Amount) of over INR 6,000 crore in FY19 and more than doubled to INR ~16,500 crores in FY20, at a growth rate of 167 per cent over FY20. The growth in FY20 is despite COVID-19’s impact on loss of CEA and revenues for the last 15 days of March 2020. Every rupee of revenue earned by the Indian OFS platforms translates into revenue for its supporting industries; thereby resulting in indirect topline growth for these service providers. Indian OFS platforms are also contributing to the overall growth of the Indian economy by paying GST, TDS on winnings, through sponsorships, in attracting FDI, in executing advertising campaigns, building IT infrastructure and incremental earnings for OFS winners, among others. Furthermore, close to 50% of transactions on OFS platforms in 2019 were initiated from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India, thereby promoting digital payments literacy and adoption. The report further deep dives into the symbiotic relationship between real-life sports and fantasy sports. A dipstick survey with 750+ respondents found that for 55% of the respondents, the engagement with fantasy sports increases the consumption of real-life sports. Further, over 65% of the respondents indicated that there is a direct increase in the time spent in analyzing, watching and reading about Sports once they start participating in online fantasy sports. Besides increasing sports consumption among sports fans, fantasy sports also supports the sports ecosystem by sponsoring live-sporting events, across Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball etc., by partnering with sporting personalities and giving back to sports via philanthropic initiatives. Due to the rapid growth of OFS, a new segment of the fantasy research ecosystem is also fast emerging across different digital platforms. Talking about the growth of the fantasy sports industry in India in his speech at GamePlan 2020, Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, said, “I have very keenly followed the growth of Indian fantasy sports industry as a supporter of technology and good governance. I am a long term believer that India must become a global champion of the fantasy sports industry. Sports across all facets, including fantasy sports, could well be a game-changer for employment and career opportunities. Given our Government’s initiatives like ‘Digital India’ and ‘Startup India’, I believe that we can harness the power of fantasy sports and create a robust sports ecosystem to boost its growth in the next few years. Post pandemic I am confident that the industry will not just rebound but will lead the way for sustainable technology-enabled growth secured by good governance.” Commenting on the report findings, John Loffhagen, Chairman, FIFS, said, “The COVID-19 impacted the Indian OFS industry in FY21 with sports matches across the globe cancelled to ensure player &amp; staff safety. Specific to India, with IPL getting postponed, ~30-40% of the revenues for most of the OFS operators were impacted for the quarter. As real-life sports is making a promising return, Indian sports fans are in for a non-stop sporting action for 8-9 months. As most of these matches will be held without an in-stadia audience, we are sure that fantasy sports being a highly immersive fan engagement platform will experience a strong surge in demand by the Indian sports fans.” Girish Menon, Head of Media and Entertainment and Partner, <keyword id="146882" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KPMG-India">KPMG India</keyword>, further added, “Online fantasy sports in India has seen rapid growth, reaching a revenue size of INR 2,470 crore in FY20. This growth has also contributed immensely to the overall ecosystem around fantasy sports including online payment platforms, tech vendors, data analytics, etc. and has had a positive impact on the consumption and growth of the overall sports landscape in India. While COVID-19 may result in a temporary blip in the upward trajectory of the fantasy sports segment, the medium to long term growth prospects of the segment remain robust, with the gradual return of international sport. Further, in a post COVID world, with social distancing measures in place, fantasy sports is likely to play an increasingly important role in connecting fans to their favourite sports and increasing fan engagement.” Key findings from the KPMG survey conducted among 750 respondents: <ul><li>For 55% of the respondents, their engagement with sports increased once they started engaging with fantasy sports</li><li>32% of all fantasy sports users, engaged with more than one sport on the platform</li><li>Over 65% of these respondents indicated that there is a direct increase in the time spent in analysing, watching and reading about the sport once they start participating on fantasy sports online</li><li>Fantasy Sports users who engaged with OFS platforms more than 4 times a week spent an average ~215 minutes/week watching sports in comparison to users who engaged less than 4 times a week and spent ~160-180 minutes/week watching sports</li><li>16% of the OFS users categorically mentioned that the key motive of watching the sports leagues is to track the performance of their OFS teams</li><li>77% of fantasy sports users are engaged in cricket contests followed by Football at 47% &amp; Kabaddi at 9%</li><li>~15-20% of the active users on OFS platforms are paid-users, which is significant given the relatively younger vintage of the industry as compared to other digital businesses</li></ul>

It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 </li><li>Its popularity skyrocketed after IPL and ICC signed them as the official partner.</li></ul>In 2009, Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth were living a fantasy. Those were times when iPhones were just becoming popular and smartphones are not all-pervading like they are –right now. Even for those who owned such phones, 2G powered data did not come cheap. Yet, the Founders of Dream11 were trying to raise money for a fantasy cricket game shaped after EPL, after IPL was launched a year back. “We had 150 people say ‘No’ before we got to our first funding. Perseverance is what it takes. Every single no came with a why, it taught me something about our business and how to grow,” Jain said at the TiE Global Summit (TGS). In a session chaired by Business Insider at the Summit — an annual event which showcased India's vibrant startup ecosystem — Jain shared the journey of his startup that introduced '<keyword id="6370198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fantasy-gaming">fantasy gaming</keyword>' as a business to India. The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a global not-for-profit organisation founded in 1992 by a bunch of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who had roots in the subcontinent. TiE helps startups with mentoring, networking, education, funding, and incubation. Dream11 founder Harsh Jain was a headliner at this year's edition of the TGS. The Dream journey Within nine years, Dream11 raised $110 million from Tencent. It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 after a secondary investment from Steadview Capital, an Asia-focused alternative asset manager. Its popularity skyrocketed first after IPL and ICC both signed them on as the official partner. It now has 75 million users on its platform and has a robust model to go with - as it earns 15-20% of a gamer’s winnings. Jain believes that there is a lot of potential ahead for fantasy gaming. “India is a large market to address where 700 million people expected to use sports online in India in the next few years,” he said. Other than providing a platform for gaming, Jain believes that their offering provides with something more--- a way to overcome tediousness. “Indians are bored that's why they keep looking at their phones. Suddenly because of Jio everyone has data and access, we need to engage them and provide entertainment. The reason why Dream11 is popular because we give that on something they love – sports,” he said. The <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/news-updates/dream-11-bombay-hc-dismisses-pil-fantasy-league-145760">High Court</a> dismissed a PIL filed by an advocate and said that Dream11 is a game of skill and not of chance. The PIL had claimed that online fantasy league game encourages gambling. This comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court too declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal. The order said that the game requires considerable skill and judgment. This order was further ratified by the Supreme Court. The Indian fantasy gaming industry is projected to be a ₹118.8 billion market by 2023. While cricket holds the majority of the market share, other games are picking up too. Dream11 has had a great run this year – from turning a unicorn with a billion Dollar valuation, in April 2019. Its users also swelled to 67 million after IPL in 2019, and was also the official partners for the league. With the ongoing World Cup, Dream11 aims to gain even more. “We expect to have 90 million users by the end of the World Cup and 100 million by the end of 2019,” Bhavit Sheth, COO, Dream11 had told Business Insider in an interview earlier. While users admittedly get the incentive to also make money through these platforms, that does not appear to be the important factor driving the growth of these startups. A recent study done by the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming and KPMG showed that across all age and income groups, ‘Fun and Excitement’ is the primary motivator for playing fantasy sports. “The ‘Opportunity to win money’ was seen as one of the motivators for around 30% of respondents, however, this was only the 5th most important factor for engagement,” stated the report.
