Exponent said its energy stack together unlocks a 15-minute rapid charge, and long battery life (3,000 cycle life warranty, 3 times the industry standard) - all done on regular LFP cells for the first time in the industry. Rapid charging kills range anxiety and the need for expensive, oversized battery packs, it said, adding that with this two-sided approach, EVs powered by exponent will be 30 per cent more affordable, which has been made possible by an optimised battery capacity (30 per cent smaller), and 5-year financing (powered by 3,000 cycle life warranty). Additionally, 15-minute rapid charging reduces EV charging cost by 33 per cent, the company claimed. Exponent Energy aims to power 25,000 electric vehicles by 2025

Bengaluru-based <keyword id="218039" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="exponent" source="Orion">Exponent</keyword> has developed the epump and epack, its proprietary charger and battery pack, that together unlock a 15-min rapid charge for 0 to 100 per cent battery charge The startup said that the new funds will be utilised to scale up its EV network to 100 location points per city, starting with Bengaluru. All existing institutional investors, YourNest VC, 3one4 Capital and AdvantEdge VC, also participated in the latest funding round. Exponent Energy raises $13 million to scale up its rapid charging points across the country

Apple is integrating ChatGPT into its leading products. And the company is now gearing up to launch its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-gpt5-gpt4-expectations-ai-2024-7">most advanced model yet, GPT-5</a>.Armed with a roster of top talent and over $11 billion in support from investors outside Microsoft, OpenAI has comfortably positioned itself ahead of its competitors.But the company is not infallible. Altman's recent projections show that the company will hit $3.4 billion in annual revenue this year but incur at least $5 billion in losses. Those losses and a lack of any clear path to profitability in the near future are beginning to make investors nervous.Investor anxiety exists around other Big Tech companies, too, like Meta, Google, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft. Huge spending on AI coupled with disappointing earnings contributed to a sell-off in the tech industry earlier this month.So, how much runway will investors be willing to give OpenAI before it can start making money? Is OpenAI too dominant for investors to give up on? We asked the experts.<h2 id="9b044ab1-4a89-4cb8-893d-1038a62661c7">OpenAI needs to retain its talent</h2>Investors are pouring money into OpenAI in part because it's an incubator of some of the brightest minds in the AI industry — so retaining them is key to keeping its backers happy.OpenAI first launched in 2015 as a nonprofit dedicated to developing artificial general intelligence — a theoretical future AI that can reason like humans — that is "most likely to benefit humanity as a whole." But the company also added a for-profit arm in 2019 to fund its capital-intensive mission.The move led to some disagreements between its aggressive profit-driven faction and the more cautious, safety-conscious side. It came to a head last year when the OpenAI board briefly, yet unsuccessfully, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-sam-altman-did-so-bad-he-got-fired-openai-2023-12#:~:text=New%20reports%20suggest%20Altman%20may,maintain%20power%2C%20the%20reports%20say.">ousted CEO Sam Altman</a>.Altman was saved, in part, by public support from OpenAI's employees.The company has lured some of the AI industry's most talented minds over the years, sometimes aggressively poaching employees from its competitors, including Google. An analysis by BI found that at least 44 ex-Googlers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-google-poaching-staff-ai-talent-war-sam-altman-2024-6">jumped ship to OpenAI</a> since the beginning of the year alone.The Information, a tech publication, reported that OpenAI is set to spend $8 billion in 2024, with at least $1.5 billion going into hiring talent.Ajay Agrawal, a professor at the University of Toronto who co-authored a book on the economics of AI, told BI that hiring the world's best engineers and researchers is part of OpenAI's edge and the cash burn is strategically sound in a still nascent market."I would say that their strategy, which is making very large investments than their current revenues can support, seems to make a lot of sense because they're competing in a market that is new," Agrawal said, adding that the potential size of the AI market is still unknown.Investors and partners will likely be empathetic toward OpenAI's capital needs to maintain talent, Mahdi Raza, cofounder and a managing partner of Exponent Founders Capital, said."Investors will continue to be excited to fund OpenAI as long as they continue to accrue a compounding customer, compute, and talent advantage," Raza said.But to retain that talent, the company must maintain the culture and mission that first attracted it."As they become more commercial, partner more with companies like Microsoft and Apple, and as their valuation goes up, there's real risk that the culture changes," Brad Porter, the CEO of robotics company Collaborative Robots, said.Several high-profile researchers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-brain-drain-isnt-great-for-sam-altman-competition-2024-8">have already left the company</a>. OpenAI's former chief scientist, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ilya-sutskever-leaving-openai-6-months-after-failed-altman-ouster-2024-5">Ilya Sutskever</a>, left in May because he didn't agree with Altman's aggressive approach to rolling out new products. He's since launched his own venture, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/man-who-revolted-against-sam-altman-just-started-research-lab-2024-6">Safe Superintelligence Inc.</a>, which bills itself as taking a more responsible approach to AI.Jan Leike, who helped lead OpeanAI's superalignment team, which worked to ensure that the company's AI technology was safe for human society, also jumped to its rival Anthropic. Its cofounder, John Schulman, announced recently he, too, was leaving for Anthropic. Researchers Daniel Kokotajlo and William Saunders also departed earlier this year."Anyone at OpenAI can start their own company now or join another, so their position is more precarious than ever," Porter said.So, whether top researchers stay — or go — might be the clearest test of the company's strength."If, internally, they continue to know they have the best AI and truly feel that they are the closest to realizing the vision of AGI, then most will want to stay to see that vision come to life," Porter said.<h2 id="44f7f591-1014-422b-8e0a-99a3cedb09de">OpenAI's first-mover advantage</h2>Because of OpenAI's aggressive investments, the company's technology is often seen as the gold standard for large language models.But it has competition. And that could cause investors to start looking elsewhere, experts told BI."Given the velocity of new development, it would not be unforeseen for more nimble competitors to spring up and some of the Big Tech AI incumbents to encroach and threaten their business," Nicos Vekiarides, the founder and CEO of digital media validation company Attestiv, told BI in a written note.Mark Zuckerberg's Meta released its latest iteration of the Llama model in July. Google launched Gemini last year, and Microsoft, an OpenAI partner, recently identified the ChatGPT-maker as a competitor.OpenAI's models are industry-leading, but companies know they have other options, Agrawal said."I think there's an increasing dependence on OpenAI models. I think their competitors are trying to reduce the dependence," he said, pointing to Microsoft as an example.In a recent SEC filing, Microsoft acknowledged the "long-term partnership" with OpenAI but also called the company its competitor."Our AI offerings compete with AI products from hyperscalers such as Amazon and Google, as well as products from other emerging competitors, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and other open source offerings, many of which are also current or potential partners," the company wrote in the filing.Agrawal added that few corporations, if any, have "extremely high dependencies" on OpenAI that would prevent the use of substitute models.Raza agreed, noting that it's also unclear whether OpenAI's models exhibit a real technical defensibility against competitors. "Any model advantage so far has proved temporary," he said.<h2 id="e453ed9f-ae3f-4867-89d9-458504f8365c">AGI could make or break OpenAI</h2>OpenAI's ultimate mission is to achieve artificial general intelligence, a hypothetical form of AI that mirrors human capabilities.It's the company's wild card. Its potential is part of what excites its investors."I think AGI will be the most powerful technology humanity has yet invented," Altman said in an interview with Time. He added that he expects to see major progress in the next decade.However, some experts believe OpenAI might be better off narrowing its focus — especially since its competitors are also barreling toward the same aspirational goal."The wide-net approach to AGI and product might come back and bite them, but Sam Altman is a fantastic CEO," Krithik Puthalath, the founder of full-stack AI startup Zyphra, told BI. "They know how to play the game, so I don't think time is up for them to demonstrate profitability. They will be able to raise a few more high-priced rounds."

Kathak's living legend Pandit Birju Maharaj dies at 83

Edtech platform <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s on Monday said that the company has received funds from 11 out of 13 investors in a Rs 3,600 crore funding round which started in June last year. New York-based Oxshott in September 2021 invested Rs 1,200 crore as part of the Series F round at Rs 285,072 per share, which is yet to arrive. "Additionally, Oxshott wasn't leading the round. In fact, they were one of the last investors to come in for that round. Out of the total Rs 3,600 crore, Rs 2,400 crore has already come in," a company spokesperson told IANS. Because transportation costs factor into everything, high gas prices raise the price of everything else, making Americans poorer in real terms because their wages buy fewer goods.But the proposed re-engagement is just code for providing the Saudis with more security commitments and additional American resources. It would reiterate that the Saudi government can do whatever it wants and expect continued US support, hardly a recipe for encouraging them to factor in American interests.It would also further erode international norms and increase reckless driving. Surrendering leverage means temporary production boosts can be reversed later. And that small "comfort" would come at the cost of looking past public extra-judicial assassination. International norms grow weaker when prominent countries offer tacit endorsement of their violation. Rogue states are a bit like entrepreneurs: they know an opportunity when they see one.Expanding US commitments to Saudi Arabia would also deepen America's involvement with a historically destabilizing force. This is a country that was recently at war with its impoverished neighbor <keyword id="12037539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="yemen" source="Orion">Yemen</keyword>, using missiles Washington provided to bomb from funerals to weddings.The leadership and institutions of Saudi Arabia are still the same. States make cost-benefit calculations like everyone else. When the United States offers engagement — money and arms despite de-stabilizing behavior — it shifts Saudi expectations of what they can and cannot do. Biden should offer them relief to encourage more oil production.After lifting sanctions on oil, Biden can offer to purchase a certain degree of oil upfront to stabilize business and improve long-term production. This would show a renewed commitment to restoring economic relations with both nations.Finally, the Biden administration should schedule bilateral talks at a regular cadence to improve communications and build a productive relationship. The goal of these talks would be to gradually remove the other sanctions, such as in banking, international trade, and shipping. Even unrelated sanctions have a pernicious effect on trade: if businesses know a country is a potential target for any sanctions, why would they invest in such an unstable environment?These reforms will not only curb inflation but help steer the two nations away from Russia's orbit and improve Washington's bargaining ability with existing clients. Countries like Saudi Arabia would have a harder time monopolizing the Biden administration's attention.International relations, like economics, is about trade-offs. By lifting sanctions on Iran and Venezuela, Biden can take steps to restore the nation's standard of living. He added that the probability of Biden's victory in the county was "1 over 10 to an exponent so large there's not enough stars in the universe, there aren't enough atoms in the universe, to explain the number."It's not clear where Solomon got his data set. <a href="https://www.factcheck.org/2021/02/oan-report-features-baseless-assertion-of-election-fraud-by-algorithm/">Factcheck.org compared</a> the numbers he used in his analysis with the data available from Georgia's secretary of state and found that they did not match. While there's no way to reliably predict what's going to happen in any given market, there are some indicators that can give you an idea of what opportunities might be worth exploring. Compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) is one such measure. Here is a closer look at what CAGR is and what it means in terms of investments. <h2>What is compound annual growth rate (CAGR)? </h2>CAGR is a formula that calculates how the value of an investment has changed over the course of a specific time period, assuming all earnings have been reinvested and no deductions have been made. This calculation allows investors to look at how much an investment has gained or lost over one or more years as a way to determine overall performance. It's a useful tool for comparing multiple investments to see what might be worth buying into, whether it's securities, property, business, or anything else of value. <h2>How CAGR works </h2>CAGR is calculated by looking at the initial and final values of an investment and a period of time over which to evaluate performance. This formula is relatively simple and assumes that nothing has been deducted from the investment, such as a sale of shares. It also assumes that any value earned - through interest or dividends - has been reinvested and compounded into the investment. "The CAGR measure can be used in any industry," explains Daniel Garza, Chartered Financial Analyst and Senior Research Analyst with <a href="https://intercontinentalwealthadvisors.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Intercontinental Wealth Advisors</a>. "However, it can be used in the investment world to complement other widely used measures, such as time-weighted return. This is because some assets are not publicly traded and it's harder to know their value at a specific time every month/year to evaluate growth or rate of return."Garza says that CAGR is useful when applied to assets that don't have publicly available data to determine performance, such as property or physical assets. "This is because having an initial value for a physical asset and a final value for the same asset, regardless of the time frame, allows you to calculate it," he says. "There is no need to constantly know the value of this asset to get to CAGR." <h3>CAGR formula</h3>To calculate CAGR, use the following formula: <div type="image" title="Formula graphic for how to calculate Compound annual growth rate (CAGR)" height="707" width="1668" msid="84905532" hostid="261"></div><ul><li>Divide the final value of an investment by its starting value. </li><li>Apply the exponent of 1/N to that quotient. The value of N will be the timeframe you're evaluating, such as a number of years. </li><li>Finally, subtract 1 from the value you get from applying the exponent. </li></ul>Let's see how this works when you put it all together. To keep things simple, we are going to determine the CAGR for an investment that has grown from $100 to $108 in value over 5 years. Your formula would look like this when you plug in all of the values:CAGR = (108/100)/^⅕ -1 = .015511 or 1.5511% This tells us that on average, the investment gained 1.5511% in value each year during the selected five-year period. Some years may have seen more growth and others less. But it smooths out to this rate when you look at the timeframe as a whole. Quick tip: There are many CAGR calculators available online but you can also use Microsoft Excel. The program's <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/xirr-function-de1242ec-6477-445b-b11b-a303ad9adc9d" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">XIRR function</a> will calculate CAGR, or you can input the following formula into a spreadsheet cell: =((V2/V1))^(1/t)-1. This can save a lot of time and get you a quick calculation, taking some of the legwork out of your research.<h2>How investors use CAGR </h2>One of the most common reasons investors use CAGR is to compare investments. Though you're not seeing the actual gains and losses from year to year, CAGR shows you how an investment has historically performed. You can use this information to learn about one or more investments, see how they measure up to one another, and make informed decisions about where you want to put your money. You can also use CAGR to track business performance as a result of measures a company takes, such as policy changes or new products introduced to market. It can also give you an idea of a business' strengths and weaknesses. For example, a CAGR that shows a steady decline over a number of years might indicate that internal or external issues are impacting profitability and the business is struggling to overcome them. <h2>Disadvantages of CAGR </h2><ul><li>CAGR doesn't tell you anything about an investment's risk. It's simply a measure of past performance. It doesn't account for varying degrees of risk that all investments are vulnerable to. If you want to determine the risk-return reward of an investment, you can use other calculations, such as Sharpe's Ratio and Treynor's Ratios, both of which adjust for risks that CAGR doesn't. </li><li>CAGR is a "smoothed" value, meaning it doesn't show the history of highs and lows an investment has seen. Growth is assumed to be constant throughout the given timeline, even though that's not necessarily the case. </li><li>CAGR can't predict how an investment will perform in the future. You can look at past performance and make a guess as to whether or not an investment is likely to continue that pattern of growth. But it is in no way a guarantee, no matter how steady growth has been in the past. In fact, Garza says the shorter the time frame used in your analysis, the less likely it will be that the expected CAGR performance will be repeated. </li><li>Representation of data can be limited when you're talking about CAGR because you're only looking at performance during a specific time frame. There can be a lack of context that skews interpretation of CAGR. For example, if you're looking at stock that was hit hard during a recession and experienced rapid growth in the years recovering from a significant loss, the CAGR is going to seem overly high. That rate of increase will most likely slow as the company levels out. </li></ul><h2>CAGR vs. internal rate of return (IRR)</h2>CAGR is a simplified, overall look at past performance. The internal rate of return (IRR) calculation takes more factors into consideration than starting and ending values over time. It looks at inflows and outflows of cash and multiple time periods.
