Automotive start-up EVTRIC Motors has unveiled its e-delivery scooter in the low-speed category at the EV Expo 2021 that will offer a range of 110 kms on a single charge. Showcased at the event held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi over the weekend, the scooter can clock a speed of 25 kms per hour. It features 12-inch tubeless tyres and a loading capacity of 150 kg. The three-day event is supported by the <keyword id="11755327" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministries-of-road-transport">Ministries of Road Transport</keyword> and Highways, and <keyword id="11821460" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="micro-small">Micro, Small</keyword>, and Medium Enterprises (<keyword id="6358354" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSME">MSME</keyword>), along with <keyword id="357266" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICAT">ICAT</keyword> (International Centre for Automotive Technology). The scooter can cover a distance of over 110 km on a single charge with two swappable lithium-ion battery options, thus avoiding a need for frequent charging, considering the requirement in the segment. Homegrown automation company <keyword id="11548787" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="papl">PAPL</keyword> recently launched EVTRIC Motors to fuel the ongoing electric vehicle revolution in India. "It is a popular opinion that EVs are not at par with the combustion engine products. This myth has been holding back the industry. Homegrown startup EVTRIC’s electric scooter can go up to 110 kilometres on a single charge, company claims

With the introduction of affordable e-scooters, the company is expecting to retain not only the existing investors but also onboard institutional players and family offices globally for its proposed USD 100-million fund-raise, Rajkumar told PTI. The company last month launched its maiden premium e-scooter Simple ONE, at Rs 1.45 lakh and commenced deliveries in a phased manner with Bengaluru to begin with from 7th of this month. The introduction of an affordable e-scooter is part of the company's plans to have a portfolio of three scooters, one performance bike and possibly a four-wheeler in the next three years, Simple One founder and CEO said. "Rs one lakh to Rs 1.30 lakh is the affordable price point for a low-end scooter with minimal performance. This is what would matter to the customers. And we are working on those price points and looking to compete with those brands," Rajkumar said, adding that the e-scooters, will be launched in the next quarter. <keyword id="6360326" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="electric" source="Orion">Electric</keyword> two-wheeler sales in the last fiscal surged over two-and-half fold year-on-year to 8,46,976 units (based on data sourced from OEMs), EV manufactures body SMEV had said in April. Of this, the industry saw sales of 1.2 lakh low-speed e-scooters with top speed less than 25 km/hour, while the total sales of high-speed E2W (top speed more than 25km/hr) stood at 7,26,976 during the year. Rajkumar said Simple Energy has shelved plans to develop a vehicle for the last-mile delivery as almost 90 per cent of the market has already been covered by the earlier entrants. Simple Energy's focus will be to develop the B2C model more going forward, he said, adding that the company is working on the charging infra, which is expected to go live in August, Rajkumar said. On funding, he said "we have a great pipeline of existing and new investors in our USD 100-million fund-raise plan for production and expansion." Besides, the company is also tapping in family-offices globally for this round of funding, he said. Earlier in February this year, Simple Energy had raised USD 20 million in a bridge round from a clutch of investors to ramp up production. The company has a manufacturing facility in Shoolagiri in Tamil Nadu with an annual capacity of around 5-lakh units.

The company said that the booking will soon open online and offline with zero booking amount on its website, along with select e-tailers. The e-scooter comes with a detachable lithium-ion battery option that provides the users with the convenience of charging. The scooters have a loading capacity of 150 kgs, clocking a motor power of 250W. Both the e-scooters take around 3.5 hours of charging time for a full battery, covering a distance of over 75 kms on a single charge, with a top speed of 25 kms per hour, the company said in a statement. "We have begun with the slow-speed e-scooters category, as we understand, given the current technology this would be a justified buy for the day-to-day commute of users. There are now more than 65,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers in the city, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/05/business/delivery-workers-new-york-bathrooms-ebikes/index.html">about 80%</a> of them use e-bikes and motorbikes.The fatality rate for these workers was at least 36 per 100,000 between January 2021 and June 2022, the city Department of Consumer and Worker Protection <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/workers/Delivery-Worker-Study-November-2022.pdf">reported</a>. That's more than 5 times the fatality rate for construction workers in New York City, which was seven per 100,000 in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/iif/state-data/fatal-occupational-injuries-in-new-york-city-2020.htm">according to</a> the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most driver deaths are a result of traffic crashes, though workers are also subject to a high rate of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/09/nyregion/delivery-workers-robberies-nyc.html">violent robbery</a>.App-based delivery drivers are also being severely injured at extremely high rates. The city report found that 28.7% of e-bike or moped delivery workers experienced injuries that forced them to miss work, lose consciousness, or seek medical care. Complicating matters, delivery drivers are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/workers/Delivery-Worker-Public-Hearing-Written-Testimony-061522.pdf">disproportionately immigrants,</a> and many are living in the country illegally, so they avoid reporting these crimes to the police or seeking medical care for fear of deportation.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, transportation and material-moving jobs have the second-highest fatality rates nationwide after farming, fishing, and forestry.<h2 id="61e96346-a699-43db-ba1b-0176a2336762">Inadequate infrastructure</h2>The increase in bicycles and electric-powered non-car vehicles on the streets is a huge win for the climate and for street safety in general — more efficient, greener transportation and fewer cars and delivery trucks on the roads is a good thing.But New York City's infrastructure is way behind. The roads are designed to move cars and trucks as quickly as possible, with little accountability for dangerous driving and very little protected space for anyone getting around by bike or scooter. Just 3% of the city's roads have protected bike lanes, and just 1% of intersections have red light cameras, Bloomberg recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-03-11/new-york-city-s-decade-long-battle-for-pedestrian-safety">reported</a>.Delivery drivers aren't the only New Yorkers at high risk of being killed in a traffic accident. Bicycle deaths, overall, hit a 24-year high in 2023. Most of the 30 cyclists who were killed in crashes last year died in collisions with automobiles — mostly trucks or SUVs — on streets without bike lanes, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/05/nyregion/nyc-cyclist-deaths-ebike.html">a New York Times analysis</a>.Without sufficient safe infrastructure, cyclists — and all kinds of non-car drivers — opt for sidewalks, where they can disrupt pedestrians, or dangerous roads where they're <a target="_blank" href="https://abc7ny.com/food-deliveryman-killed-cyclist-sunset-park-new-york-city/5001979/">no match for cars</a> and trucks.The surge in delivery drivers on e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and motorbikes has created some safety and quality-of-life issues for everyone else on the street as well.In January, New York Mayor Eric Adams <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-24/nyc-launches-city-office-to-regulate-e-bike-delivery-boom">announced the creation</a> of a new department of sustainable delivery tasked with regulating commercial delivery services that use bikes and other micro-mobility vehicles.The city's Department of Transportation insists it's taking seriously street safety for delivery workers and others using multi-modal transportation. A spokesperson for the department told Business Insider that it built more protected bike lanes last year — 32 miles of them — than all other major US cities combined.But that falls far short of the <a target="_blank" href="https://projects.transalt.org/bikelanes">50 miles of protected lanes</a> it aimed to build last year. They're asking for wider protected bike lanes, or even separate lanes for e-bikes and mopeds, and charging facilities for e-bikes."The City is going backwards on street safety. The number of fatalities and injuries will only continue to rise unless the City matches the huge surge in e-bikes and mopeds with infrastructure improvements, dedicated e-bike lanes, investments in slow and shared streets, and accountability from food delivery companies," New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said in a statement to Business Insider.<h2 id="de5185f6-21dd-4bd9-a400-d90aff2f80bd">Little accountability</h2>App-based delivery workers' status as gig workers — contractors rather than employees — is central to their plight. Food delivery companies — including giants like Uber Eats, Grubhub, and DoorDash — don't have to provide them with benefits, including health insurance.And they didn't have to provide them with minimum pay until last year when the city implemented <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/nyc-delivery-workers-minimum-wage-app-45d1fe3a184bc1a49acef647d6cb5758">a minimum wage</a> for app-based restaurant delivery drivers. In April, the mayor announced the hourly wage would be bumped to $19.56 per hour, before tips — a big improvement on the average of $5.39 per hour that workers made before the law went into effect.Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the worker advocacy group the Workers Justice Project, blames food delivery companies for creating unsafe working conditions by incentivizing workers to deliver as many orders as they can as quickly as possible, and to work late at night, during storms, and in other risky conditions. Advocates for delivery workers hope minimum pay will lessen these incentives."The number one reason we have been advocating for fair pay in the app delivery industry is because having dignified pay actually translates into safety on the streets," Guallpa, who was <a target="_blank" href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/new-york-inside-power-list.html">a driving force</a> behind the creation of minimum pay for app workers, told Business Insider. "Minimum pay really means that you can actually drive safely when you're riding to make that delivery."A spokesperson for DoorDash said the company offers all drivers occupational accident insurance, and has a trust and safety team available to support drivers around the clock. Uber similarly insisted the company is "deeply committed to building innovative features, promoting safe behavior on the road, and working with safety experts to raise the bar on safety," according to a spokesperson.Guallpa's group wants to see a slew of other changes to improve worker safety, including boosting worker protections and investments in infrastructure like bike lanes and bike parking, better education for workers and connections to city resources, and stronger enforcement of the employers' obligations.Lander and Guallpa also want the companies to help their joint effort to create "Deliverista hubs" — storefronts and converted newsstands where workers can take breaks, charge their bikes, get training, and be connected with city resources like health insurance. Three hubs are in the works — one near City Hall in lower Manhattan, one on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and one in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Guallpa said.Keeping delivery workers safe should be a public priority, Guallpa said. EV manufacturer <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> Electric on Thursday launched its much-anticipated Ola S1 Air e-scooter, which comes available in three variants at a starting price of Rs 84,999. The company also expanded its Ola S1 portfolio by launching the new variant at a price of Rs 99,999, which comes powered by a 2kWh battery, and offers an IDC range of 91 km and a top speed of 90 km/hr. The purchase window for the new variant opens from February 9, while the deliveries will begin from March 2023, the company said. "The expansion of the successful S1 portfolio and the S1 Air in 3 new variants, and across multiple price points will encourage more customers to permanently switch to EVs," Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder and CEO, Ola, said in a statement. Ola launches new e-scooter S1 Air, starting at ₹84,999

Ola Electric on Sunday forayed into the green mobility space with the launch of its first electric scooter, Ola S1, at a price starting from Rs 99,999 (ex-showroom). The Ola S1 electric scooter would come in two trims -- S1 and S1 Pro -- carrying a price tag of Rs 99,999 and Rs 1,29,999, respectively. "I want to underline that it is going to be the best scooter ever made. It has the best design, performance and technology," Ola Chairman and Group Executive Officer Bhavish Aggarwal told reporters here. With never seen before technology, design and features, the company is looking for a global leadership in the electric two-wheeler segment, he added. The company will officially open Ola S1 for purchase from September 8, and start deliveries across 1,000 cities and towns in October. Till September 8, the company will keep accepting the bookings at Rs 499, Aggarwal stated. He noted that Ola S1 solves one of the biggest challenges which has hampered the growth of the EV sector in India has been the upfront cost. "In states with active subsidy grants, Ola S1 will be much more affordable than many petrol scooters. For instance, after state subsidy in Delhi, the S1 would cost just Rs 85,009 whereas in Gujarat it would be only Rs 79,000," Aggarwal said. The company has also tied up with banks and financial institutes for an EMI plan starting at Rs 2,999, he added. The Ola S1 comes with a range of 181 km, a top speed of 115 km per hour and can be fully charged in less than 40 minutes with a fast charger, and around six hours with the portable charger that will come with the scooter and can be installed at homes. The scooter comes with various features like reverse mode, hill hold function, driving modes and cruise control and takes less than 3 seconds to cross 0-40 km per hour. It comes with keyless lock and unlock system and safety features like an anti-theft alert system and geo-fencing. "Scooters are meant for the young but the industry has made such a vibrant category dull and boring and we are hopeful that we are going to change that," Aggarwal quipped. The scooter comes in 10 colours with in-house development 8.5 KW motor and 3.97 kWh battery packs. Ola is setting up a manufacturing plant, spread across 500 acres, in Tamil Nadu. The company has previously said it is investing Rs 2,400 crore for setting up the facility that will create nearly 10,000 jobs and will be the world's largest scooter manufacturing facility upon completion. Aggarwal noted that the first phase of the 'Futurefactory' is nearing completion. "By the end of the month, it is going to be ready. We bought the land in January and we put up the first pillar at April-end," he noted. The company will initially start with 10 lakh annual production capacity and then scale it up to 20 lakh, in line with market demand, in the first phase. When fully completed, the plant is going to have an annual capacity of one crore units that is 15 per cent of the world's entire total two-wheeler production. "We are building this scale because it is the only way of accelerating this transition to sustainable mobility," Aggarwal noted. Asked when the company expects to reach the one-crore production mark, he said: "Ten million production depends how fast the market scales up. We are estimating it to be within the next two years." "Everything is being done by us. We are working with suppliers for mechanical parts but core parts of electrification are being done by us in-house. It is part of our strategy to control the technology ourselves and also to design the components ourselves and then manufacture them on our own," Aggarwal said. Ola Electric would source items like plastics and tyres from outside vendors and for that, it plans to build an entire ecosystem around the factory, he added. On charging infrastructure, Aggarwal noted that the company would have established presence across relevant cities by the time deliveries commence in October. "Charging station roll out will follow sales rollout, so it will be sales, then charging stations but every city will have at least relevant scale as we begin," Aggarwal said. Ola had earlier stated that it would like to have 5,000 charging stations across 300 cities and towns across India. "That's the goal, we will be targeting that...The company has tied up with various partners and those will get operationalised once deliveries begin," Aggarwal said, adding that all kinds of developers, office complexes and even hospitals would be covered under the exercise. He noted that the scooter would have a hybrid approach when it came to actual sales. The company would have physical experience centres and online channel to sell the product. The sales outlets or the experience centres would come up across the country over the next few months, Aggarwal said. The executive pointed out that the company has received strong demand from about 1,000 towns and cities. "The EV revolution is here to stay whether incumbents like it or not. Consumers have shifted in their mindsets and before we know it, people will be buying only electric," he noted. He further said: "When we are going to share our bookings number with you in few days, I can assure you that it is going to be the highest number of reservations ever for any automobile launch in the country." On exports, he said the shipments would begin soon. "We have been very clear about the fact that we can build in India for the world and (demand for) two-wheelers is growing globally. All across the world, especially after COVID, people want personal mobility options and we want to be the global leaders in this segment," Aggarwal noted. The company's electric scooter would be relevant in markets like ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), LATAM (Latin America) and Europe, he said. "The traditional markets for two wheelers have been Asian markets, LATAM and Africa have been growth markets for two-wheelers but the large volumes have always come from the Asian markets," Aggarwal said. Especially after COVID, even the West has opened up and more and more people in Europe want to buy electric two-wheelers, he added. Even in the US and North America, people have started to experience two-wheelers for urban mobility, Aggarwal said. "Over the next four-five years, we will see a lot of evolution. Lot of opportunities will open up globally for two-wheelers and they will have to be electric," he stated. On competition with other electric vehicle brands, Aggarwal stated: "In two-wheelers, the incumbents have not properly invested for electrification and we believe we will absolutely lead the way as our technology is ahead by a few years". When asked if the company is also looking at tapping into the Chinese market, he said: "China is not an immediate priority for us". "There are enough markets beyond that. The Chinese two-wheeler market is a unique one, while it's all electric, its all low-speed, low-quality electric vehicles. Transformation is happening there as well," he added. Aggarwal noted that the company has been very careful to source almost all the components from India, with only the battery cells coming from South Korea. Asked about the chip shortage situation globally, he said the company is dealing with the issue and has been able to overcome the challenge for the short-term. "It is something that the industry would have to deal with over the next 6-9 months...It is a challenge, so we are trying to deal with it," he said. Aggarwal noted that the company plans to enter various segments, including an electric car, in the coming days. He, however, did not share any details. "Futurefactory now producing almost 1000 scooters a day. Opening up purchase window for remaining customers soon," he wrote in the tweet. In December end, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> had revealed that it has dispatched all units of its S1 and S1 Pro electric scooters to its customers. The company also organised special events for the first 100 customers in Bengaluru and Chennai for the deliveries of <keyword id="11908704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola-s1" source="Orion">Ola S1</keyword> and S1 Pro e-scooters. Recently, some customers reported problems related to mechanical issues, build quality, as well as the range offered on a full charge. The company later said that all problems with the scooters were fixed.

In a tweet, <keyword id="1543567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhavish-aggarwal" source="Orion">Bhavish Aggarwal</keyword>, Founder and CEO, <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword>, said that Hypercharger roll out has begun across cities. "At key BPCL pumps as well as residential complexes. 4000+ points up through next year. We're installing across India and will make them operational in 6-8 weeks. Will be free for use till end June 22 for all customers," he said in a tweet late Tuesday. Ola has expanded into advanced two-wheeler electric vehicles manufacturing at its Futurefactory. It has already begun deliveries of its e-scooters — Ola S1 and S1 Pro — albeit delayed a bit. Ola in April unveiled the 'Hypercharger Network', a charging network for its upcoming two-wheeler products starting with the <keyword id="10402715" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola-scooter" source="Orion">Ola Scooter</keyword> to be launched in India in the coming months. According to the company, the charging network will be the widest and densest electric two-wheeler charging network in the world, with more than 100,000 charging points across 400 cities. In the first year alone, the company is setting up over 5,000 charging points across 100 cities in India, the company had said in a statement. With this network, the company's upcoming Ola Scooter can be charged 50 per cent in just 18 minutes for a 75 km range. "By creating the world's largest and densest two-wheeler charging network, we will dramatically accelerate the customer adoption of electric vehicles and rapidly move the industry to electric," according to Aggarwal. Ola Electric aims to install more than 4,000 EV charging points across cities in 2022

<keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> has postponed the sale process of its electric scooter S1 by a week to September 15 as it faced "technical difficulties" in making the website for purchases live for customers on Wednesday. The company had last month launched the <keyword id="11908704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-S1" source="Orion">Ola S1</keyword> electric scooter in two variants -- S1 and S1 Pro -- at Rs 99,999 and Rs 1,29,999, respectively (ex-showroom including FAME II subsidy and excluding state subsidies). It had announced that the scooter would be available for purchase from September 8 and the actual deliveries would start in October. In a late night statement on Twitter, <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> Chairman and Group CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said the purchase process has been delayed by a week and would commence from September 15. "We had committed to start purchases today for our Ola S1 scooter. But unfortunately we have had many technical difficulties in making our website for purchases live today. "I want to apologise to all of you, who had to wait for several hours. The website was just not up to our expectations on quality. I know we have disappointed you and I sincerely apologise to each of you for what was clearly a very frustrating experience," he stated. The company has built a completely digital purchase journey, including a fully digital loan process without any paperwork, Aggarwal informed customers. "We wanted to provide this first of its kind digital purchase journey and today we haven't been able to. Getting you the right experience will take us another week. I want to let you know that we will now be starting our purchase on 15th September, 8 AM. "Your reservation and your position in the purchase queue remains unchanged, so if you reserved first, you will still be able to buy it first. Our delivery dates also remain unchanged," he noted. Ola Electric had opened pre-launch bookings of its electric scooters in July for Rs 499 and had received 1 lakh orders in just 24 hours. However, the company has not disclosed how many orders it has received so far. On August 15, the company formally announced its foray into the green mobility space with the launch of its first electric scooter, Ola S1. The scooter comes in 10 colours with in-house developed 8.5 KW motor and 3.97 kWh battery packs. Ola is setting up a manufacturing plant, spread across 500 acres, in Tamil Nadu. The company had stated that it would initially start with 10 lakh annual production capacity and then scale it up to 20 lakh, in line with market demand, in the first phase. When fully completed, Ola Electric had claimed that its plant would have an annual capacity of one crore units, "that is 15 per cent of the world's entire total two-wheeler production".
