According to Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new electric vehicle in the US in September was $56,000, compared to $48,397 for combustion-engine vehicles. <h2>China races ahead</h2>US automakers are grappling with the challenge posed by Chinese EV companies like BYD and Xiaomi, who have rolled out affordable electric vehicles packed with advanced technology. While these companies are unable to sell their cars in America due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-criticizes-biden-plan-to-ban-chinese-tech-in-cars-2024-11">cripplingly high tariffs</a>, they are putting Western companies under pressure in China and attracting plaudits in the US, with Ford CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-ceo-driving-xiaomi-su7-electric-vehicles-ev-2024-10">Jim Farley praising Xiaomi's SU7 EV</a>. And Tesla wants to keep its strong lead in the US EV market, which recently slipped under 50% for the first time."I think it would be devastating for our competitors and for Tesla slightly," Musk said in a July earnings call, predicting the impact of the tax credits ending. "But long term probably actually helps Tesla, would be my guess."On Thursday, Reuters reported that Trump plans to end the EV tax credit, with support from Tesla representatives. Ford, the only competitor to break out its EV-specific finances, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://s201.q4cdn.com/693218008/files/doc_financials/2024/q3/Press-Release-Ford-2024-Q3-Earnings.pdf">reported</a> a -104% margin for its Model e unit.Yet many of Tesla's vehicles are also priced well below many competitors. The Model 3 starts at $42,490 (after a cheaper option disappeared earlier this year). That's well below the average EV price in the US, which held steady at nearly $57,000 in October, according to Kelley Blue Book data.In an effort to juice sales, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-can-make-cars-cheaper-than-competitors-2024-6">Tesla has drastically cut prices</a> on many of its cars over the past year, instigating an industry-wide price war that has cut into its own margin in pursuit of maintaining its industry-leading market share. Of the nearly 600,000 EVs sold in the US in the first half of 2023, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Q2-2024-Kelley-Blue-Book-Electric-Vehicle-Sales-Report.pdf">half</a> were made by Tesla. Ford, in second place, accounted for just over 7% of EVs sold in the same period."While losing the EV tax credit could also hurt some demand on the margins in the US, this will enable Tesla to further fend off competition from Detroit as pricing/scale/scope is an apples to oranges when compared to the rest of the auto industry once the EV tax credit disappears," Dan Ives, a longtime bullish analyst at Wedbush, told clients in a note on Thursday.<h2 id="c6cefac7-9186-47f8-8f0a-f2fb65808785">Tesla is ahead of the curve in building a US manufacturing presence</h2>Eliminating the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-state-electric-car-vehicle-tax-credits-rebates-qualify">consumer tax credit</a>, part of President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, would need congressional approval. It's not yet clear if Trump and the incoming Republican-controlled Congress would also target other IRA tax incentives, like those supporting domestic manufacturing of cars, batteries, and other components. Competitors like BMW, Honda, and Hyundai have <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/20/tracking-the-ev-battery-factory-construction-boom-across-north-america/">raced</a> to scale up factories state-side to take advantage of those credits.Tesla has been ahead of this curve in manufacturing, too, with six US factories churning out cars and batteries. That work has paid off, and many Tesla models are regularly named as the most "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cars.com/american-made-index/">American-made</a>" compared to competitors, many of which rely on factories in Mexico. In fact, only one other American automaker even cracked the top 10 in 2024.Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja said in a July earnings call that the company has taken advantage of manufacturing credits, but "we always drive ourselves to say, OK, what if there is no IRA benefit? And how do we operate in that kind of an environment? Like Elon said, we definitely have a big advantage as compared to our competition on that front."In October, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry group representing Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, and others, <a target="_blank" href="https://subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2024/11/auto-trade-group-to-gop-tax-writers-keep-bidens-ev-credits-00189430">urged</a> Congress to keep the tax credits.The tax credits, including those for commercial leasing and manufacturing, are "critical to cementing the US as a global leader in the future of automotive technology and manufacturing," they said in an October letter to Congress published by <a target="_blank" href="https://subscriber.politicopro.com/f/?id=00000193-277d-dea7-afbb-b77f708f0000">Politico</a>.The group, which does not include Tesla, did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the Trump transition team did not respond to a request for comment.While Musk supports cutting the EV tax credit, reports of its potential demise appear to have spooked investors. That's the problem because their competitors can sell cars at a really low price level because they have the battery cost under control," Wisbert said.She warned that attempting to save money by scaling back EV plans would render German carmakers even less competitive in the future. Volkswagen and Mercedes have both adjusted their EV strategies and pushed back targets in recent months as sales stagnate."Right now they're cutting their plans for future investment — and that's not the best way to stay competitive in the future," said Wisbert.Investors are also sounding the alarm, sending Mercedes-Benz shares down more than 11% this year, with BMW sliding 28%. VW, meanwhile, is down about a fifth this year, and close to half the stock price of October 2019. At the time of purchase, an Aadhaar-authenticated e-voucher will be generated, which will enable buyers to avail of demand incentives. Another Rs 4,391 crore has been earmarked for the procurement of 14,028 e-buses, with a demand aggregation process led by CESL in nine major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Intercity and interstate e-buses will also be supported in consultation with states. Furthermore, Rs 500 crore has been set aside to incentivize the adoption of e-trucks, a critical move given that trucks are one of the largest contributors to air pollution. In the financial year that ended in March 2024, the share of electric two-wheelers was at 5 per cent. Share of EVs in two-wheeler sales rose from just 0.4 per cent in 2020-21 to 5.4 per cent by early 2023, led by rising subsidies and new launches. However, Jefferies claimed that a subsequent reduction in incentives has resulted in the share remaining in the 4-7 per cent range for most of the past 24 months, despite the introduction of lower-priced vehicles by manufacturers. "We currently assume share of E2Ws rising from 5 per cent (0.9mn units) in FY24 to 7 per cent/10 per cent/13 per cent (1.4mn/2.3mn/3.4mn units) in FY25E/FY26E/FY27E, although we now see a downside risk to these estimates in the context of the new scheme targeting just 2.5mn E2Ws over two years," Jefferies said in its report released earlier this week. <keyword id="19897349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ola Electric" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ola Electric">Ola Electric</keyword>, which has recently become a publicly listed company, has emerged as the dominant manufacturer in India's electric two-wheelers market, said Jefferies, noting that its market share rose from 21 per cent in 2022-23 to 35 per cent in 2023-24 and further to 49 per cent in 1Q-2024-25. The slump was driven by a 69% decline in Germany, Europe's biggest car market and economy.The cooling demand has led to questions over whether European automakers can meet the European Union's ambitious climate goals, which require all new cars to be zero-emission by 2035.It's also put pressure on EV companies and their suppliers. One of Europe's key battery manufacturers, Northvolt, announced on Monday <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northvolt-european-battery-startup-cutting-jobs-sweden-ev-tesla-2024-9">it will lay off 1,600 employees</a> and scale back its expansion plans to focus on existing customers.<h2 id="03606594-0832-457a-a25e-b3bc29e8114e">EVs hit a speed bump</h2>Europe's EV industry is suffering from a complex mixture of challenges, auto industry analysts told Business Insider.In Germany, home to a massive Tesla gigafactory and a famous automotive tradition, demand has been hit by a government decision to phase out subsidies for EVs in December 2023.William Roberts, automotive research lead at battery consultancy Rho Motion, described the decision to pull the country's EV subsidies with barely a week's notice as a "shock removal" that, coupled with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-vs-china-economy-europe-global-decoupling-wall-street-markets-2024-">weak economic conditions,</a> has severely dented consumer sentiment in Germany and the rest of the EU.A lack of affordable electric vehicles has not helped the situation. Although EU customers do have access to some EVs that are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-electric-cars-you-can-buy-in-europe-not-us-2024-9">not available in the US,</a> Roberts said most still fall into the premium category.Dylan Khoo, an analyst at technology intelligence firm ABI Research, told BI: "There are only a handful of models that you could really say are mass market, and even those are quite a bit more expensive than their gasoline counterparts."The lack of affordable models is unlikely to be helped by the EU's proposed tariffs on China-made EVs, which include a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_4301">17% tariff on BYD vehicles and 9% on Teslas</a> imported from China.Roberts said that's probably not great news for drivers. "If the consumer is just looking for the cheapest possible EV, then at the moment, that would probably be satisfied by an imported Chinese vehicle."<h2 id="f811f30f-e910-4869-9a83-5e59c6307df5">Supply chain struggles</h2>Europe has also faced difficulties in developing its EV supply chain, with many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-11/vw-s-german-factory-closures-highlight-wider-problems-for-europe-s-carmakers">factories left with under capacity</a> and startups such as Northvolt struggling after the demand slowdown hit their ambitious expansion plans."I think for Northvolt there was a sense of over-optimism and over-ambitiousness, when you compare their plans to where some of the manufacturers are," Khoo said.Roberts said Europe has suffered from a patchwork attempt to encourage EV demand and build out its supply chain."The EU is not a federal government like the US — they can't blanket provide huge incentives and subsidies and have every country take them up," he said."So the supply chain is always going to be a bit more fragmented, and that's going to lead to difficulties when you're all trying to move towards one target as a bloc."<h2 id="62b2ae38-d830-442a-bdde-324e3689eed4">A warning for the US</h2>The struggles faced by Europe provide a warning sign to the US, which lags behind its cross-Atlantic neighbor in EV adoption.Electric cars accounted for 25% of new vehicle sales in Europe last year, compared to just 10% in the US, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2024/trends-in-electric-cars">according to IEA data</a>.Like Europe, few affordable EV models are on sale in the US, which experts have suggested has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrc-vehicle-demand-problem-affordability-expense-price-cost-2023-10">contributed to a slowdown in demand</a> in recent months.Key EV factories and infrastructure have also been delayed as automakers rethink their EV plans and shift focus to hybrids. Ford is halting production of a new electric pickup at a planned factory in Tennessee, and GM is delaying an EV battery plant in Indiana.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-trump-presidential-victory-could-mean-for-evs-tesla-musk-2024-7">Consumers face concerns over subsidies with the election</a> looming, too.Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have cast doubt over whether the $7,500 tax credit for purchasing a new EV, introduced by Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, will continue if they win the presidential election in November.The prospect of crucial subsidies being suddenly removed, as in Germany, could have an equally chilling effect on America's EV industry. However, Roberts said while the US will likely face its own pressures down the line, it has a significant supply chain advantage over the EU."There's a lot more funding available," he said. "If that's used correctly to build out the supply chain, then that can have a much more positive impact than in Europe, where the funding for the supply chain has been a lot more reliant on just the private sector."Still, "I'd argue the US is still in an early adopter phase when it comes to EVs. You'd be silly to not take these warning signs from anyone further ahead of you in the curve," he added.
