Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Cabinet on Friday approved an electric vehicle (EV) policy that aims at promoting such automobile manufacturing and the adoption of pollution-free transport. Odisha <keyword id="6248507" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicle-policy" source="Orion">Electric Vehicle Policy</keyword>, 2021 got the go-ahead during the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. "The objective of the policy is to achieve adoption of 20 per cent electric vehicles of all automobile registrations by 2025 and to promote manufacturing of such vehicles and its components, including battery, in the state. This also aims at facilitating innovation, research &amp; development," Chief Secretary SC Mahapatra said. He stated that it is now necessary to reduce vehicular pollution and carbon emission. "It is high time to reduce the emission by curbing the use of vehicles that consume fossil fuel and accelerating the pace of adoption of electric vehicles," he said. Various incentives will be available for industries for manufacturing electric vehicles and for individuals for purchase, another official said, adding that interest subvention in loans, waiving of road tax and registration fees were also proposed. Incentives under the startup policy of the MSME Department will also be extended for making pollution-free vehicles. As per the policy, a 15 per cent subsidy for buying electric motorcycles, three-wheelers and four-wheelers will be provided with a maximum amount of ₹5,000, ₹12,000 and ₹1,00,000, respectively. The Cabinet also approved the Odisha Sand Policy, 2021 which will ensure sustainable mining of it in the state. The policy has been framed considering the demand-supply situation, identification of sources, mining plan, environment and other statutory clearances, Mohapatra said. "It is in accordance with the environmental regulations and to ensure adequate supply of sand for development and welfare projects," he said. This will help prevent illegal mining of sand and make sure a robust monitoring mechanism with the IT-enabled regulations. The Cabinet also cleared several proposals pertaining to various departments ranging from social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities, water resources, commerce and transport to fisheries, revenue and disaster management. It approved a tender worth Rs199.60 crore for the construction of a wall at the Kanpur irrigation project site in Keonjhar district. The work would be completed in 11 months, he added.

It’s launching the MG ZS EV in early December – a car that will hopefully make electric cars in India sexy. The British company which is now owned by Chinese SIAC entered the India automobile market with a mid-size SUV, MG Hector in June 2019 and received an overwhelming response. Now, it hopes to have a similar path with its electric car with the launch slated to be on December 5. It will join the two other EV options in India – Mahindra eVerito and Hyundai Kona Electric. Lack of charging infrastructure All the <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> launched and yet to be launched have a rocky road ahead. And not just because the car sales in general is on a slow lane for the last one year. The cars need an extensive charging infrastructure and India had a mere 222 publicly accessible charging points in 2017 and that too in top cities. So MG is developing charging infrastructure as well. Days ahead of its EV launch, MG Motors launched the first 50 kW DC charging station at its flagship showroom at Gurugram – n partnership with Fortum Charge &amp; Drive India. They plan to add four more stations across Delhi NCR. It is planning to open them in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. “With an aim to be the leader in the EV segment in India, we are pulling out all the stops to ensure adequate charging infrastructure for our first EV customers. Our endeavour is to create a robust ecosystem for EVs, right from charging to end-of-life for electric vehicles in India and the installation of the first public fast charger is the first major step in this direction,” said Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director at , MG Motor India. However, it’s not alone. Tata Motors too is setting up 500 EV charging stations in five cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad – over the next two years. What the Indian government is doing The Indian government has set a mission – to convert 30% of cars on the roads to electric by 2030. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, has been given the authority to set up charging stations across the country. In a study done by the BEE and Ernst &amp; Young, it was projected that by 2030, Delhi would have 22.6 lakh charging stations, Lucknow would have 6.3 lakhs while Nagpur would have 2.6 lakhs. And there is the problem of the cost. “The retail pricing has been determined to be ₹4 per minute of charging that the operator is likely to charge the EV user with capital subsidy,” the study said. “At least one charging station should be available in a grid of 3 Km X 3 Km in the cities and one charging station at every 25 km on both sides of highways/roads,” Power Minister RK Singh said recently. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also announced tax subsidy for people who buy electric cars during the Union Budget. “To make electric vehicles affordable to consumers, our government will provide additional income tax deduction of ₹1.5 lakh on the interest paid on loans taken to purchase electric vehicles. This amounts to a benefit of around ₹2.5 lakh over the loan period to the taxpayers who take loans to purchase electric vehicles,” she had said. At least 40% of the inputs that bus manufacturers use have to be made in India. The limit will be higher at 50% for other electric vehicles such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars and e-rickshaws. The proportion will be based on the on ex-factory price of the vehicles. Complying with these norms will ensure that companies receive benefits under the 'Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Phase II (<keyword id="105175" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fame-India">FAME India</keyword> Phase II)’ scheme, reported <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/corporate/government-tightens-localisation-norms-for-electric-vehicles/68294648">ET</a>. The report further mentioned that direct subsidies of upto ₹88 billion will be given to consumers to promote EVs in India. The scheme is also expected to invest into setting up 300 new charging stations for electric/hybrid vehicle batteries, which will help “in allaying range of anxiety among consumers,” an ASSOCHAM spokesperson had told Business Insider. The Indian government had recently approved the FAME India Phase II scheme, having set aside a budget of ₹100 billion for it. The idea behind the implementation of the scheme is to offer upfront incentive on purchase of electric vehicles and also establish a necessary charging Infrastructure for electric vehicles, according to official documents. The benefits of the scheme will further be given only to those who use lithium ion batteries in their vehicles. This is the second phase of incentives for electric vehicles in India and it is expected to draw around ₹3.5 billion to be invested majorly in R&amp;D and manufacturing of batteries and its components in India. “Part of this allocation will also go towards development of motors using rare-earth magneticmaterials and electronic control systems used in hybrid and electric vehicles,” the spokesperson said. “This is expected to lead to reduction in cost of development of hybrid vehicles and bridge the viability gap.” According to <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/india/cabinet-approves-rs-10000-crore-package-for-phase-ii-of-fame-scheme-3596961.html">reports</a> under Phase 1 of the FAME scheme, which was launched in 2015, a whopping 2,65,335 electric/hybrid vehicles were given a boost through “demand creation” and steps taken under “charging infrastructure and technological support”. However, infrastructure for electric vehicles is still in the basic stages in India, with the government <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/auto/bjp-government-to-install-electric-vehicle-charging-stations-at-every-25-km-in-india-2040029.html">still planning</a> the installation of charging stations across the country with few successful installations. India’s new rules, incentives to boost electric vehicle manufacturing also has a discount for buyers

About 50 per cent of <keyword id="471072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-consumers" source="Orion">Indian consumers</keyword> are now open to <keyword id="15455926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="buying-EVs" source="Orion">buying EVs</keyword>, albeit with a caveat, while 54 per cent of consumers are still concerned about EV quality, a report showed on Monday, adding that EV range anxiety now appears to be a misperception. As per the report by CyberMedia Research (CMR), the consumers are not shying away from EVs owing to 'EV range anxiety' or 'upfront costs', or 'limited EV charging infrastructure'. "For long, limited EV charging infrastructure and range anxiety have been construed as barriers for EV adoption. However, automotive OEMs have already designed EVs with a sufficient range of up to 200 kms or more," said John Martin, analyst, smart mobility practice, CMR. "The potential consumer for EVs is more concerned by the overall EV quality. EV quality includes not just external build quality but refers to the overall quality of internal components used - including battery and others," Martin added. With a strong government policy push, including its flagship EV scheme, faster adoption and manufacturing of <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> (FAME), and more automotive OEMs prioritising EVs, India's EV momentum is gaining momentum. India's EV charging infrastructure is accelerating, with more public EV charging stations coming up. Alongside, cross-industry collaborations in the EV ecosystem will also contribute to the ramping-up of charging infrastructure. "Driven by ongoing policy thrust at the central and state levels for EV infrastructure development, alongwith upstream R&amp;D in battery development will ensure a significant uptick in ramping-up e-mobility. For OEMs, the focus should be on continuous awareness generation around the quality and potential of EVs," John noted. 54% Indians consumers concerned about EV quality, not range: Report

New Delhi, Jun 30 () India's economy will recover following the containment of COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing reforms would keep the country's growth rate ahead of peers, Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said on Tuesday. Kumar was speaking at the virtual launch of a report titled - Towards a Clean Energy Economy: Post-COVID-19 Opportunities in India's Energy and Mobility Sectors - prepared by government think tank Niti Aayog and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). "India's economy will recover following the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic," he said. Last week, the IMF had projected a sharp contraction of 4.5 per cent for India's growth in 2020, citing unprecedented coronavirus pandemic that has nearly stalled all economic activities, but had said the country is expected to bounce back in 2021 with a robust six per cent growth rate. "India's strong democratic institutions promote policy stability. Ongoing economic reforms, if executed well, should keep the country's growth rate ahead of peers," Kumar added. Several economists, brokerages and multilateral agencies have pointed to a deep contraction to india, triggered by the strict lockdown announced to stem the spread of deadly coronavirus. Speaking at the event, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said clean energy will be a major driver of India's economic recovery and international competitiveness. "We must look at how to leverage our domestic innovation ecosystem to bring value to the country and industry in this new normal. "We have recommended specific actions by which India can revive two of our economic powerhouses - the transport and power sectors - and emerge stronger," Kant said. The report said electric vehicles market in India may experience a shift as consumers seek affordable products amid COVID-19, and it could make manufacturers resume production for conventional vehicles. It also said there may be delays in electric vehicles (EV) production as manufacturers focus on reviving demand and producing BS-VI vehicles, while curbs on imports of Chinese components may lead to disruptions in EV manufacturing. "Auto sales could decrease by as much as 45 per cent in the financial year 2020–21. EV production could be affected in the short term due to lower demand and supply-chain disruptions with BNEF estimating an 18 per cent decrease in global EV sales in 2020. "The EV market may experience other shifts. For example, there is an expectation of demand for more affordable EV products. This potential shift in consumer preferences may affect manufacturers' investment and production decisions. Ultimately, resuming production levels for conventional vehicles and EVs will depend on demand revival, supply-chain reactivation, and access to the labour force," the report said. Lower disposable incomes and a tendency towards cash saving will lead to reduced demand for EV in the short-term, the report said, adding "some OEMs' customers are pushing back their EV business plans by two or more years". On the impact on EV supply chains, the report said, "There may be delays in EV production as manufacturers focus on reviving demand and producing BS-VI vehicles. Curbs on imports of Chinese components may lead to disruptions in EV manufacturing". It also highlighted the consequences of policy changes, stating "many state EV policies and e-bus projects may be delayed due to other priorities and social-distancing challenges". Stressing that the emerging situation and challenges in the context of COVID-19 has and will continue to disrupt business as usual in the mobility sector, the report said the impact of the pandemic on passenger and freight segments, as well as the auto industry, raise several questions. These include whether the overall demand for mobility will fall in the short to medium-term, will ridership of public and shared transport modes decline and will private modes be preferred? It also pondered whether lack of auto sales will cause a severe hit to the supply chain and a growing call for self-sufficiency lead to a push to create local supply chains. "Will the Prime Minister's call for domestic manufacturing and localisation attract investments at a time when a recession is looming? Would the new mobility ecosystem propelled by startups be able to survive the crisis," it wondered. BKS BAL BAL

NEW DELHI: The Delhi transport department has issued a show-cause notice to <keyword id="42747" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, seeking its reply in connection with a complaint that one of its electric car models failed to meet the specified range on a single charge, officials said. The complainant claimed that the model (Nexon EV) of the electric car purchased by him from a dealer at the <keyword id="6412146" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="safdarjung-enclave">Safdarjung Enclave</keyword> and registered on December 3, 2020 has failed to provide the specified 312-km range on a single charge, a <keyword id="1389125" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-transport-department-officer">senior transport department officer</keyword> said."It has been informed that while the <keyword id="4215553" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-model">vehicle model</keyword> is specified to provide a 312-km range on a single charge, the vehicle owned by the said customer has never provided a range of more than 200 km," the show-cause notice issued to Tata Motors read. The vehicle owner, a resident of Najafgarh, also claimed that he has "duly followed" various advices of the dealer but no improvement was noticed, despite best efforts."Therefore, a show-cause notice is issued as the vehicle has failed to provide an optimal range to the consumer as promised by the OEM (original equipment manufacturer," the notice said. The notice has directed the OEM to depute its representative to appear before a transport department officer at 12 noon on February 15.In case no representative of the OEM appears before the transport officer on the designated date and time, further action including "delisting" of the said model from the subsidy-eligible e-vehicles' list can be considered, the notice stated. According to the Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, notified by the transport department on August 7, 2020, a purchase incentive of ₹10,000 per kWh of battery capacity is provided on buying an electric four-wheeler with a cap of ₹1,50,000 per vehicle.The owners of the first 1,000 e-cars to be registered in Delhi after the issuance of the policy will be eligible for the incentive, officials said. The electric car model under question was approved under the eligibility conditions of the Delhi EV Policy .A Tata Motors spokesperson said the notice was received and "all possible measures" are being taken to address the concern.The range specified on a single full charge (312 km) for Nexon EV is on the basis of the certification received from the <keyword id="131330" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Automotive-Research-Association-of-India">Automotive Research Association of India</keyword> (ARAI), which is the official body that independently tests all mass-produced vehicles under standard test conditions, before those can be offered to customers, he said.The actual range achieved in EVs is dependent on the usage of the air-conditioner, individual driving style and the actual conditions in which the vehicle is driven. The range achievement is also a function of familiarity with the new technology and customers report improvements upwards of 10 per cent within four to six weeks of familiarity, he said."Since its launch a year ago, Nexon EV has consistently grown in popularity to become <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s highest-selling electric vehicle with nearly 3,000 families enjoying the pleasure of owning and driving it," the Tata Motors spokesperson added.
