And just because a charger exists doesn't mean it's in the right place or compatible with the EV you're driving.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2024-us-electric-vehicle-experience-evx-public-charging-study">JD Power</a>'s annual study of EV public charging experiences released in August found that 19% of respondents visited a charger but were not actually able to charge their vehicle. A majority of these failed charging visits were due to lack of availability or the charger being broken, JD Power found.Affordability is also a key issue for today's electric car shoppers, an issue the industry has tried to address with lower sticker prices. "For those who are looking to transition due to the environment, hybrids allow owners to lessen their reliance on fuel and creates options for batteries and parts. For many, it's a win-win."It's not quite that simple, though. Hybrids are hard to find right now as automakers rush back to the once-withering segment. Compared to the average new car transaction price of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/market-insights/kbb-atp-march-2024/#:~:text=Last%20month%2C%20the%20average%20transaction,15.5%25%20compared%20to%20March%202021.">$47,218</a>, these two impressive EVs cost far less.You don't need to spend even that much to get your hands on a solid electric car. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-bolt-ev-euv-cheapest-electric-car-discontinued-dead-2023-4">2023 Chevrolet Bolt</a> EV LT started at just $27,495. Factoring in the federal EV incentive courtesy of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Bolt EV's price dropped to just $19,995.Chevrolet recently discontinued the Bolt to focus on its new Ultium-powered products. I considered a used Mach-E, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/polestar-2-price-review-photos-tesla-model-3-psny-2022-9">Polestar 2</a>, or another Model 3. I must've hit a used auto market dry spell, as few good deals were available.My three intern roommates and I resorted to plan B: splitting a Hertz rental for the summer.We opted for the least expensive option: the "mystery EV." There's compromise in some areas, but it's not as bad as you think.When you first enter the Bolt EV's cabin (or the EUV, as the interiors are nearly identical), you see a nicely laid-out interior and a vivid center infotainment display. I've been in cars far more pricey than the Bolt EV with worse interiors.The base 1LT model has few amenities compared to the more expensive 2LT version, but it's not bad for its price point. You get remote cabin preconditioning through the key fob, an OK-sounding six-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay, LED headlights, and some basic safety features. The Bolt EV won't wow anyone, but it is honest and functional.It's still a tall and tippy hatchback, but it's got plenty of power. The Bolt's front-mounted electric motor delivers 200 horsepower nearly instantly, meaning it can accelerate to 60 in around six and a half seconds.A 66-kilowatt-hour battery powered by LG Chem cells delivers energy to the Bolt's motor, which results in an EPA driving range of 259 miles. Based on my driving, that's quite accurate. Some electric cars, like older Teslas, often miss the mark on real-world range.<h2 id="79cfed4e-dc46-4822-9481-f9634374b223">Charging the Bolt</h2><div type="image" title="a Chevrolet Bolt charging in a parking lot" height="1200" width="1600" msid="114581098" hostid="261" sizebytes="282028"></div>While our rental house had a garage and a 120V socket, the Hertz Bolt didn't have a charging cable (these cost anywhere from $100 to $250 on <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=cd9b7c31e7af9c7afe2dc50a0f58558a149b771f6b0b247d80551187f0552921&amp;postID=671a98e4e5b5408300694b77&amp;postSlug=chevrolet-bolt-cheap-capable-wish-charged-faster-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fk%3Dmobile%2Bev%2Bcharger%26crid%3D314HKM0FAG5HH%26sprefix%3Dmobile%2Bev%2Bcharger%252Caps%252C111%26ref%3Dnb_sb_noss_1">Amazon</a>). My friend in the area lent me a charging cable, so we were back in business.When charging on 120V (also known as Level 1), it draws 1.3 kilowatts or adds around four miles of range per hour. It's not a lot, but it worked as my commute to work was just four miles round trip and six if I went to the gym.My workplace offered free access to Level 1 chargers, so the Bolt EV could charge up to 18 hours daily. Eighteen hours of charging equates to 72 miles of range added per day.There were also 6.6 kilowatt Level 2 chargers at work, though they cost $0.25 per kilowatt-hour of energy ($1.65 an hour). Using the Bolt's full battery, you'd pay $16.50 to go 259 miles. In a 32-mpg Chevrolet Cruze, you'd spend around $40 to go the same distance.Sometimes, you need to charge your car faster when driving long distances. That's where DC fast charging comes into play but where the Bolt EV begins to lag. Thanks to PlugShare, we could easily calculate routes and find nearby chargers.After packing up in Newark, we headed off with a starting charge of around 85% battery. When we reached Monterrey, our battery was down to 23%, or 54 miles of range.We stopped at a four-stall Electrify America station and plugged it in to charge while we ate lunch. After 48 minutes, we were up to 78% charge or 191 miles of range, and we made it home.Charging the Bolt was doable. Would I have taken it on my 1,100-mile Joshua Tree trip? It has more rear passenger space, feels more substantial, and looks more rugged.When I got home, I still wanted something that charged a little faster and had a more engaging driving experience. With the federal EV incentive, I bought a newer Model 3 for a little over $20,000.The Bolt EV and Model 3 are incredible used values, though avid road trippers or performance enthusiasts might want to look beyond the little Chevrolet.

Chinese EVs you can buy in Europe — but not in the US

This is the latest move by GM to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-stations-explained-levels-plugs-tesla-supercharger-2022-12">improve charging access</a> for its EV customers. With the addition of the Supercharger network, GM drivers can now charge at more than 231,800 Level 2 and DC fast chargers across North America, according to the Detroit-based automaker.That number is expected to grow even more in the coming months as GM expands its network of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-ev-chargers-look-like-gas-stations-2024-9">public charging stations with EVgo</a>. Earlier in September, the companies announced they are working together on a network of fast-charging hubs that will look and operate like gas stations (minus the gas). These back-to-back charging announcements from GM should signal to customers that the Detroit car company is committed to improving the public charging experience, said GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer."It is our intent to be the leader in providing fast, convenient, and safe charging in the public infrastructure," Sheffer told Business Insider.<h2 id="cb4e0e8a-ed18-4c61-a275-f9d027c4619c">Car companies working together is rare — but necessary for EV charging</h2>GM was among the many car companies that partnered with Tesla last year to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NCAS). Crosstown rival <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-to-bring-supercharger-network-to-rival-ford-musk-says-2023-5">Ford was the first to join Tesla</a> on NCAS in May 2023, and companies like GM, Rivian, Volvo, and BMW later followed suit.Adoption has been slow, however, as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-recruiter-wants-to-hire-interns-impacted-by-tesla-cuts-2024-5">Tesla shrank its Supercharger team</a> earlier this year. GM's EV drivers are finally getting access to the Tesla Supercharger network

<ul class="summary-list"><li>EVs go a lot farther these days, but chargers are still hard to find.</li><li>No one seems to agree whose job it is to build charging infrastructure.</li></ul>Electric vehicles have come a long way — literally.In the earliest days of the EV transition, a fully battery-powered car (like the first-generation <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-leaf-revew-cheapest-affordable-electric-car-in-us-2021-10">Nissan Leaf</a> that went on sale in 2010) could only drive for about 100 miles on a full charge in the best weather conditions.That's fine for an enthusiastic early adopter or someone looking to replace just one of their multiple gas cars, but it didn't satisfy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/car-buyer-interest-hybrids-as-electric-vehicle-adoption-slowing-2023-10">the average car shopper</a>.Today, a mass-market EV can deliver about 300 miles on a single charge. That's a huge improvement in just 14 years, but the great American road trip is still far from achievable in an EV, thanks to one persistent issue: range anxiety.Car companies and battery suppliers have spent years working to quell this anxiety. But despite the vast improvements in battery technology, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-dozens-of-startups-leading-the-electric-car-charging-market-2022-2">EV charging</a> still can't hold a candle to the 5-minute stop to fill a gas tank.Even as charging times come down (GM boasts its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gms-new-ultium-battery-is-for-electric-car-gearheads-2020-3">Ultium batteries</a> can gain about 100 miles of range in 10 minutes on a DC fast charger), there simply aren't enough public chargers in the right spots.Car companies hoped the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-stations-explained-levels-plugs-tesla-supercharger-2022-12">public charging infrastructure</a> would improve along with them as they built more range into their vehicles. This hasn't really happened, though, and a slew of EVs are hitting the market with nowhere to charge up on a road trip, exacerbating one of the biggest barriers to adoption.<h2 id="7513a323-210d-4f78-a628-38d4f5085936">Charging is a hot potato issue</h2>One thing essentially everyone can agree on in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-misconceptions-about-the-ev-transition-market-sales-2024-5">EV transition</a> is that vast and reliable fast-charging infrastructure is essential. Studies have shown that areas with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/charging-logistics-top-barrier-to-electric-car-adoption-survey-2022-7">more access to public charging infrastructure</a> have higher rates of EV adoption, even though a majority of charging happens at home.What no one can seem to agree on is who is responsible for building out public charging infrastructure. And a closer look reveals that perhaps pinning the problem on one entity, public or private, will only slow efforts to grow.Car companies have made some efforts to build out charging infrastructure, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.evgo.com/press-release/evgo-and-general-motors-open-1-000th-dc-fast-charging-stall-as-part-of-metropolitan-charging-collaboration/">partnering with charging companies</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://sourceability.com/post/seven-major-automakers-to-partner-on-new-30-000-unit-ev-charging-network">other stakeholders</a> to install public chargers and help new EV buyers install home charging systems.Tesla, which has always led the way with its Supercharger network, is also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-teslas-charging-partnership-ford-and-gm-works-consumers-2023-6">opening its stations to other car manufacturers</a>, aiding in patching the holes in the public charging network.All these industry efforts have helped to feed an EV charging infrastructure boom in recent years. At the start of 2024, there were some 61,000 public charging stations in the US, more than doubling the amount of stations there were in 2020, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/2024/05/23/electric-vehicle-charging-infrastructure-in-the-u-s/">Pew Research</a> and the Department of Energy.Still, that's way less than the roughly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.convenience.org/Research/Convenience-Store-Fast-Facts-and-Stats/FactSheets/IndustryStoreCount">120,000 gas stations</a> nationwide, and public efforts to grow charging infrastructure appear to be slow-going so far.The Biden Administration has set aside $7.5 billion for charging infrastructure with a vow to add 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. Since Congress approved this funding two years ago, only a handful of stations have gone live, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2024/03/28/ev-charging-stations-slow-rollout/">according to reports</a>.<h2 id="ce7d279d-604f-4a94-bcca-5b61c75310f7">Building out charging infrastructure is just one piece of the puzzle</h2>We're still far from the level of infrastructure required for mass adoption, even as the rate of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-sales-miss-ev-slowdown-new-wave-customers-2024-4">EV sales hits a slowdown</a>.One slowdown appears to feed the other: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-electric-car-sales-plateau-early-adopters-competition-2023-8">a new crop of EV shoppers</a> isn't interested in buying a car that might die on a road trip, and charging companies aren't willing to grow for customers that don't exist yet.On top of the issue of infrastructure coverage, there is the question of where we will get the power to run all of these new charging stations.A recent study from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2024/05/21/2885659/0/en/Study-from-the-University-of-Michigan-Transportation-Research-Institute-UMTRI-Shows-New-Reliability-Concerns-Related-to-Electric-Vehicle-Charging.html">University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute</a> found that utilities are not fully equipped to handle the large swings in usage that can be caused by increased amounts of EV charging.All this means that cross-industry efforts — between car companies, their suppliers, charging startups, and public utilities — will be crucial as we continue to grow the share of electric cars on the road.

Owners of gas-powered vehicles don't have to worry about this issue because they're usually near a gas station. But for EVs, it's a major roadblock to widespread adoption. The number of chargers available at each Starbucks store will vary, but there should be a minimum of four at each location, the spokesperson added.The spokesperson said the coffee giant was continuing to learn how its customers interact with EV stations and exploring partnerships and areas that would benefit from similar routes.Mercedes-Benz opened its first high-power-charging site in November as part of an initial $1 billion investment to construct "the most desirable charging network." Since then, it's opened a dozen locations with 400 kW chargers across the country and plans to expand to half the US in the next 18 months.

Starbucks could give a much-needed jolt to the EV market

The data provided by the minister shows that Maharashtra leads with 3,079 EV charging stations followed by Delhi with 1,886, while Karnataka is at the third spot with 1,041 charging stations. The FAME-II scheme inter-alia included financial support in the form of subsidy for setting up of public charging infrastructure to instill confidence among the EV users, the minister said. Further, the Ministry of Power has taken several initiatives to accelerate the deployment of public EV charging infrastructure in the country. The government has issued guidelines and standards for charging infrastructure, which enable the owners of EVs to charge their vehicles at their residence/office using their existing electricity connections. A revenue sharing model for provision of land at promotional rates for public charging stations has also been introduced and provision has been made for providing electricity connection to Public Charging Station (PCS) within stipulated timelines. The government has also prescribed the single part EV tariff for public charging stations, This amount cannot exceed Average Cost of Supply (ACoS) till 31.03.2025. The guidelines specify a ceiling of Rs 2.50 per unit and Rs 3.50 per unit of electricity used for slow AC charging of EVs at PCS during the solar and non-solar hours, respectively. Additionally, a ceiling limit of Rs 10 per unit and Rs 12 per unit of electricity used for DC fast charging of EVs at PCS during the solar and non-solar hours, respectively, has also been specified. Average cost of supply (ACoS) by DISCOMs to PCSs during solar hours shall have a rebate of 20 per cent and a surcharge of 20 per cent during all other times. The Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022, has been notified with the objective of further accelerating renewable energy adoption, ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and green energy for all, the minister added.

Brian Kemp said Georgia will be the "electric mobility capital of the world."</li></ul>Electric vehicle investments are surging in Georgia.According to a recent Wells Fargo <a target="_blank" href="https://wellsfargo.bluematrix.com/links2/html/2379e487-7800-433a-95b9-735589c4e1a1">report</a>, Georgia has received more private investments in electric vehicle and battery manufacturing than any other state, with just over $23 billion to date.Jackie Benson, an economist at Wells Fargo, told Business Insider that the state is poised to be a hub for EVs because of its business-friendly environment, robust population growth, and federal and state incentives attracting companies to the state.Since 2022, the Peach State has added over 30,000 clean energy jobs, more than any other state, according to a June <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/new-study-inflation-reduction-act-has-created-over-30000-georgia-jobs/">study</a> by Climate Power, a strategic communications firm. This comes as federal investment in green energy is ramping up, and people are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wealthy-leaving-california-new-york-moving-florida-texas-reasons-effects-2024-8">flocking south</a> for a lower cost of living and better economic opportunities.<h2 id="b74fbdcb-0db7-4a0a-afa0-222558bdddc9">Investments in the Battery Belt to boost EV manufacturing and infrastructure</h2>In 2023, Gov. Brian Kemp said that Georgia would become the "electric mobility capital of the world," per the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-is-creating-its-first-ever-climate-plan-heres-what-to-expect/RKDANAY5DBCJLHYCUXVYCUDB5Q/">Atlanta-Journal Constitution</a>. So far, it's looking promising.Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are a part of the Battery Belt and have received nearly $77 billion in private investment in EV battery manufacturing to date, according to an August <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atlasevhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/2024.08_Atlas-EV-Investment-Brief.pdf">report</a> by Atlas Public Policy.It's not just southern states: Michigan leads the nation in capacity for electric vehicle battery manufacturing, but Georgia is second, according to a January <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.edf.org/media/analysis-finds-us-electric-vehicle-battery-manufacturing-track-meet-demand">report</a> by the Environmental Defense Fund, a nonprofit advocacy group.The state has also greatly benefited from federal investments in green energy and electric vehicle manufacturing and infrastructure. The Biden Administration <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/17/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-private-and-public-sector-investments-for-affordable-electric-vehicles/">aims</a> for 50% of new vehicles in 2030 to be EVs, and investment in green energy in Georgia is partly a result of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Georgia-Fact-Sheet.pdf">allocated</a> over $175 million toward the EV battery supply chain in Georgia and $135 million over five years toward infrastructure for EV charging stations in Georgia. In February, Hyundai <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/hyundai-announces-new-production-start-date-at-metaplant-america-during-hyundai-day-in-georgia-302071754.html#:~:text=Hyundai%20Motor%20Group%20is%20investing,that%20will%20employ%203%2C500%20workers.">announced</a> over $7 billion in investment in production facilities in Georgia. The company estimates their investments in Georgia will create nearly 40,000 jobs in the state."The Hyundai investment specifically has boosted Georgia's profile in terms of EV production on the national stage," Benson said.The Inflation Reduction Act also created a $7,500 tax credit for new EVs for both consumers and businesses and incentivized efforts to boost domestic EV supply chains.In May, Kia <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/u-s-federal-manufacturing-incentives-working-for-georgia-kia-begins-ev9-production-in-west-point/">announced</a> the production of its first American-made EV at its production facility in West Point, Georgia, enabling the company to take advantage of the tax credit.Manufacturing accounts for 10% of Georgia's gross state product, which is its economic output, and construction accounts for 4%, according to Wells Fargo.Investments in EV and battery manufacturing will boost job growth and output in both of these sectors, Benson said.While government, health care, and leisure are the leading industry drivers in Georgia, investments in manufacturing are poised to boost the state's overall economic growth.<h2 id="fb9799f7-223c-4b7b-9f9e-5b994c7dac21">Georgia transplants are helping fuel economic growth in the state</h2>Georgia's real GDP outpaced the nation in the first quarter of the year, at 2.3% and 1.4%, respectively. In seven of the last 10 years, the state's GDP has outpaced the national average, according to Wells Fargo.Strong population growth remains a tailwind for Georgia's economic growth and EV industry, Benson said.Between 2021 and 2022, there were 327,795 people who moved into Georgia, according to data from the Census Bureau. The Peach State had the fifth most new residents during that time, following Florida, Texas, California, and North Carolina.New state residents means more consumers at stores, more homebuyers and renters, and more demand for goods in Georgia, fueling economic activity.Among those people who moved from another US state into Georgia, nearly 26,000 came from California, and more than 23,000 from both Texas and North Carolina, according to data from the Census Bureau.The biggest influx of new residents in Georgia came from outside the US. Between 2021 and 2022, just over 60,000 people from abroad moved to Georgia, per Census Bureau data.Benson said single-family construction has recently scaled up in the state, in line with its robust population growth.Benson said the scale-up in single-family construction has helped shore up construction employment. The three-month moving average for job growth in construction in the state was up 0.1% year-over-year in July, the report noted.Unemployment in Georgia remains below the national average and is only 40 basis points higher than its historic low in 2022, Benson said."Nationwide, we're seeing builders pull back on single-family construction for multiple reasons," Benson said.
