How Materialism Is Eroding Our Happiness

Obama pointed out that Garland has waited more than five months longer than the "average nominee" has waited for a vote. The Supreme Court returns to work this week with only eight justices.</span></p><p><span>"<span>Every day that GOP Senate leaders block this nomination, they hamstring the entire third branch of government," Obama wrote.</span></span></p><p><span><span>He also laid into congressional Republicans, saying that they've "lost sight of their basic mission."</span></span></p><p><span><span>"B<span>y hobbling the Supreme Court for what could be a year or longer, Republicans are eroding one of the core institutions of American democracy," Obama wrote. OBAMA: 'Republicans are eroding one of the core institutions of American democracy'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Saudi Arabia was downgraded by Moody's, the US credit rating company, <a href="https://www.moodys.com/sites/products/AboutMoodysRatingsAttachments/MoodysRatingSymbolsandDefinitions.pdf">as low oil prices and falling economic growth begin to take their toll on the country's finances.</a></p><p>Moody's said "lower oil prices have led to a material deterioration in Saudi Arabia's credit profile," in a statement published on its website. </p><p>"A combination of lower growth, higher debt levels and smaller domestic and external buffers leave the Kingdom less well positioned to weather future shocks," Moody's said.</p><p>The country's credit rating was downgraded one notch from Aa3 to A1. That's still in so-called investment grade territory and on a par with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> is at Aa1.</p><p>Here's the Moody's rating scale:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Moody's</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Saudi Arabia is going through some sharp political changes as it tries to diversify its economy away from oil to protect its economy from persistently low prices.</p><p>King Salman has handed more responsibility to <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-young-saudi-royal-at-the-heart-of-the-middle-easts-great-power-struggle-2016-1">30-year-old Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman</a>, and recently replaced <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/saudi-king-reshuffles-cabinet-2016-5">replaced 20-year veteran oil minister Ali al-Naimi</a> with <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/saudi-aramcos-125-billion-megadeal-could-be-coming-to-new-york-2016-4">Khalid al-Falih, chairman of the state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco.</a></p><p>So far, these moves have yet to help Saudi Arabia's finances. Moody's focused on lower economic growth forecasts as an explanation for its rating change.</p><p>Here's Moody's (emphasis ours): </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">While the government has ambitious and comprehensive plans to address the shock by diversifying its economic and fiscal base, <strong>those plans are at an early stage of development and their impact remains uncertain.</strong></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Nominal GDP has dropped by 13.3% in 2015, and Moody's expects another 5% reduction in 2016. In line with the anticipated gradual recovery of oil prices, nominal GDP should reach its pre-oil price shock level by 2019. Due to fiscal consolidation in the form of streamlined government spending, <strong>Moody's expects real GDP growth to drop to 1.2% in 2016 from 3.4% in 2015. </strong></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Over the coming five years, <strong>growth will average 2%, much lower than the 5% annual average recorded in 2011 to 2015.</strong></p><p>Lower growth makes the government's financing needs harder to cover, leading to a large deficit. Moody's said it expects "an average deficit of 9.5% of GDP between 2016 and 2020, requiring cumulative financing of SAR1.2 trillion ($324 billion or almost 50% of estimated nominal GDP in 2015)."</p><p>Meanwhile, foreign exchange reserves are dropping. "Saudi Arabia's buffers will continue to erode. Moody's downgrades Saudi Arabia: 'The buffers will continue to erode'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Jeff Bezos</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said that Donald Trump is "eroding our democracy" during an interview at Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit on Thursday.</p><p>Bezos expressed concern over the Republican nominee's accusations of mainstream media bias, threats to lock up Hillary Clinton, and refusal to accept the outcome of the presidential election if he doesn't win.</p><p>"Saying that he may not give a graceful concession speech if he loses the election, that erodes our democracy around the edges," he said. "Saying that he may lock up his opponent erodes our democracy around the edges."</p><p>When Trump attacked The Washington Post's reporting on his taxes, Bezos (who owns The Post) <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-donald-trump-space-amazon-2015-12">jokingly tweeted</a> that he would reserve Trump a seat on his Blue Origin company's next rocket to space.</p><p>Now, he wishes he had taken Trump's opposition more seriously from the beginning.</p><p>"One of the things that makes this country as amazing as it is, we are allowed to criticize and scrutinize our elected leaders," he said on Thursday.</p><p>"An appropriate thing for a presidential candidate to do is say, 'I am running for the highest office in the world, please scrutinize me,'" he said. "That's not what we've seen. The house was moved 80 feet to the north and 60 feet to the east.</strong></li><li><strong>Environmental changes are impacting properties around the country, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rising-seas-are-threatening-the-value-of-costal-real-estate-2018-8">nearly one trillion dollars of US real estate is currently threatened by rising seas</a>.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>For people who live along a coastline, erosion can be their worst nightmare.</p><p>That's exactly the predicament two homeowners on Nantucket, a <a href="https://www.nantucket-ma.gov/Faq.aspx?QID=60">tiny island</a> of 11,000 year-round residents 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, found themselves in. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/need-to-relocate-bring-the-house-too-11564070995">The fast-eroding edge of a bluff threatened the foundation of their 10,000-square-foot home.</a></p><p>The Wall Street Journal's <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/need-to-relocate-bring-the-house-too-11564070995">Marli Guzzetta</a> reported that Dao Engle and her husband bought the sprawling home for $8.4 million in 2012, and then spent <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/need-to-relocate-bring-the-house-too-11564070995">seven years planning and four months preparing</a> to have the mansion picked up and moved.</p><p>According to Guzzetta, the couple was aware of the bluff's eroding edge when they purchased the home - and it heavily influenced the home's low asking price.</p><p><span>"By fixing the problem and redoing the space, we have effectively doubled the value of the home versus what we bought it for," Mrs. Engle told Guzzetta.</span></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-live-to-avoid-natural-disaster-according-to-insurance-workers-2018-10">We asked insurance workers where they'd live in the US to avoid future natural disasters - here's what they said</a></em></p><p>The total cost of the move - which takes into account the disconnection of utilities, the clearing of the site, and the concrete used - was around <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/need-to-relocate-bring-the-house-too-11564070995">$1.6 million</a>. The home was removed from its foundation, put on 16 cribs and 16 stakes, and over the span of a week, moved away from the eroding edge.</p><p>But the Engles aren't the only ones dealing with the harsh reality of climate change.</p><p>Environmental changes are having devastating impacts on real estate across the country. Business Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rising-seas-are-threatening-the-value-of-costal-real-estate-2018-8">Aria Bendix</a> previously reported that nearly one trillion dollars of US real estate is threatened by rising seas. A couple paid $1.6 million to move their Nantucket mansion away from an eroding bluff, and it's an increasingly common problem wealthy, coastal dwellers will have to face

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Crytek</span></p><p class="caption">This stunning scene might not be real, but if it's all you see when you look around, it'll be pretty convincing all the same.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>If we were to take a television back in time - to the Middle Ages, say - and show off a Blu-Ray film (our time machine has a power supply), we can imagine that those medieval viewers would have no idea how we created such a stunning illusion.</p><p>Our audience would presumably want to try to look inside the television to see if we had a small crew of theater performers creating all these scenes - provided they hadn't already burned us for the witchcraft of appearing out of nowhere.</p><p>Obviously, we have no confusion when we see an incredible scene on a television: Even <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/horror-movies-do-something-incredible-to-your-brain-2016-3">when it can make us gasp or cry</a>, we instantly know it's fiction (or a technologically reconstructed representation of reality).</p><p>But due to advances in neuroscience that filmmakers are starting to incorporate into their work and because of technologies like virtual reality, "fictional entertainment" could soon be much more capable of convincing us that it's actually real, that it simply must be. That's both wonderful and a little terrifying.</p><p>Film scholars are starting to embrace neuroscience as a way of better understanding their audience. So far, that new school of study, <a href="http://www.cns.nyu.edu/~nava/MyPubs/Hasson-etal_NeuroCinematics2008.pdf">known as neurocinematics</a>, is mostly helping filmmakers understand what's happening in a viewer's brain as they watch a film. In the future, that knowledge could be used to make films that are even more captivating, immersive, and convincing.</p><p>And with VR, the power that creators have to convince their audience that something is real skyrockets.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>PlayStation</span></p><p class="caption">Imagine exploring this old mansion - in VR, you can!</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's been said before, but it's worth repeating: Until you've tried VR, you can't imagine how convincing it is.</p><p>The three major VR headsets - the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Playstation VR - are all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-playstation-vr-faq-2016-10">out for sale</a> now. They're far from perfect and in many ways, VR game and experience creators are still trying to figure out how to make the best use of the systems. (Journalist Chris Suellentrop has written that even comparisons to the first iPhone, implying VR will get better soon, are early - he says that for now, <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/playstation-vr-feels-right-at-home-in-your-living-room-w443551">it's more like the first blocky carphones</a>, that there's a long way to go.) Yet even at this imperfect point, there's still something magical that happens when your eyes tell your brain that what's happening is real even though you know it isn't.</p><p>When you try a horror experience in VR, immediately your heart starts pounding. Sure, it's not real, but everything in your brain is screaming that it is. That's the power new technology has to convince us.</p><p>"For the past 100 years, the way we have stimulated the visual system is that we have this 2D image in a fixed frame. But our visual perceptual system is tied into the movement of our heads and the movements of our eyes," says <a href="https://manhattan.edu/faculty/michaelgrabowski">Michael Grabowski</a>, an associate professor of communication at Manhattan College and the editor of the textbook "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Neuroscience-Media-Understandings-Representations-Routledge/dp/1138811505?tag=TIsafetynet-20">Neuroscience and Media: New Understandings and Representations</a>."</p><p>When you look all around you and nothing disrupts the scene, it's hard to really be sure that it's an illusion. And that's the magic of VR.</p><p>"When you put on VR goggles and your head movements are confirming with your visual systems what you're seeing, your visual system is confirming it [too]," Grabowski says.</p><p>For now, filmmakers and game designers are still mastering the most effective techniques for storytelling with these new technologies. Technology is eroding our ability to understand what's real and what's just an illusion

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/armydre2008/3583339920/">frankieleon/Flickr (CC BY 2.0)</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>If you reach for a diet or sugar-free drink hoping to protect your teeth, you may not be getting the desired effect. </p><p>While sugar-free soda, sports drinks, and candies <a href="http://www.fdiworldental.org/media/11367/Sugar-substitutes-and-their-role-in-caries-prevention-2008.pdf">do reduce the risk of cavities</a>, they could be slowly chipping away at your tooth enamel - what's called "dental erosion."</p><p>A <a href="http://www.oralhealthcrc.org.au/sites/default/files/Dental%20Erosion%20Briefing%20Paper_FINAL2015.pdf">new report from an Australian dental organization</a> analyzed several peer-reviewed studies and concluded that sugar-free drinks and candy can cause dental erosion. The labeling of these products should change, the authors argue, so that consumers can make more informed choices. </p><p>The problem is that these drinks and snacks are typically acidic. Acid can soften the surface of teeth, eroding away the enamel over time. In serious cases, this <a href="https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/dental-erosion">enamel loss can require fillings, veneers, crowns, and even root canals</a> as treatment. </p><p><a href="http://www.oralhealthcrc.org.au/sites/default/files/Dental%20Erosion%20Briefing%20Paper_FINAL2015.pdf">Ingredients to watch out for</a> include phosphoric acid, sodium citrate, citric acid, malic acid, fumaric acid, tartrates, and tartaric acid, the report notes. </p><p>While dentists have long focused on cavity reduction, the incidence of cavities is actually <a href="http://www.quintpub.com/display_detail.php3?psku=B9067#.Vlyist-rQ6s">declining</a>, while dental erosion seems to be <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24993258">on the rise</a>. </p><p>Previous studies looking at the link between eroded teeth and sugar-free drinks have been small, and predominantly conducted outside of the US. Studies have concluded that <a href="http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00784-003-0252-1#/page-1">regular soda can lead to dental erosion</a>, but fewer have studied sugar-free drinks in particular. </p><p>The report cites two studies that found that <a href="http://www.ada.org.au/App_CmsLib/Media/Lib/1208/M429221_v1_Cochrane.pdf">sports drinks</a> and <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1834-7819.2009.01126.x/full">sugar-free sodas</a> in Australian schools <a href="http://www.ada.org.au/App_CmsLib/Media/Lib/1208/M429221_v1_Cochrane.pdf">did erode the enamel</a> on human molars, but it is not clear what effects these drinks would have in people's mouths under typical consumption patterns. (The authors of the new Australian report included sports drinks in their analysis because "although these drinks are usually not sugar-free, they are often perceived by consumers to be a healthier alternative to traditional soft drinks.")<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/makelessnoise/3610103532/">makelessnoise/Flickr</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><a href="sugar-free products may decrease dental caries incidence but they may bring another dental health risk, dental erosion, if they contain acidic flavouring">One review</a> examining the effect of sugar-free candies on dental health concluded that while choosing them over regular sweets may help reduce cavities, things like "tooth-friendly" gum "may generate false security because people may automatically believe that sugar-free products are safe on teeth." People might not be aware, the authors write, that certain kinds of sugar-free candy can "bring another dental health risk, dental erosion, if they contain acidic flavouring."</p><p><a href="http://www.amjdent.com/Archive/ReviewArticles/2005/Coombes%20FinalApril2005.pdf">Another review article</a> cited a study that found a link between dental erosion and sports drinks, but concluded that it's tough to tell whether that one factor is what's causing enamel loss. </p><p>"There is no doubt that the acidic nature of sports drinks has the potential to cause dental erosion with animal and in vitro studies supporting this notion," <a href="http://www.amjdent.com/Archive/ReviewArticles/2005/Coombes%20FinalApril2005.pdf">the author wrote</a>. "Combined, these studies indicate that isolating one dietary component as causative of erosion may be simplistic and factors such as <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15560830/">drinking habit</a> and salivary production may play a more influential role on the pathology." </p><p>One small study found the prevalence of dental erosion was fairly common in the US - <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11132512">41% of the 129 children surveyed had enamel loss</a>. New Delhi, Mar 13 () Investor wealth worth nearly Rs 12 lakh crore was wiped off in less than 15 minutes of trade opening on Friday, with benchmarks crashing over 10 per cent on mounting fears over coronavirus pandemic.<p> The 30-share BSE Sensex plummeted 3,380.59 points, or 10.31 per cent, to 29,397.55. It hit an intra-day low of 29,388.97, falling up to 3,389.17 points.</p><p> Trading was halted for 45 minutes in early session after the index hit its lower circuit limit. </p><p> The BSE and NSE benchmark indices, however, pared most losses with the Sensex trading 835.40 points, or 2.55 per cent, lower at 31,942.74, and the Nifty was down 253.25 points or 2.64 per cent at 9,336.90 at 1040 hours.</p><p> The mayhem on Dalal Street eroded investor wealth worth Rs 12,92,479.88 crore, taking the total m-cap to Rs 1,12,78,172.75 crore on the BSE at 1020 hours.</p><p> The m-cap of BSE-listed companies stood at Rs 1,25,70,652.63 crore at the end of trading on Thursday.</p><p> Traders said besides global selloff, incessant foreign fund outflows also weighed on investor sentiments.</p><p> On a net basis, foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 3,475.29 crore on Thursday, data available with stock exchanges showed.</p><p> On the BSE, 1,279 scrips declined, while 193 advanced and 40 remained unchanged.</p><p> Volatility heightened in global markets as benchmarks world over went into panic mode, insinuating a freakish selloff.</p><p> Bourses in Shanghai dropped over 3.32 per cent, Hong Kong 5.61 per cent, Seoul 7.58 per cent and Tokyo cracked up to 7.97 per cent.</p><p> Wall Street lost 10 per cent in overnight trade.</p><p> More than 1,30,000 cases of the novel coronavirus have been recorded in 116 countries and territories, killing at least 4,900 people.</p> The number of coronavirus patients in India has risen to 74, as per health ministry log.
