Over 70 engineering colleges in India opt for ‘progressive closure’ as they fall short of students, checkout the full list

<ul><li><keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> will be recruiting engineers for its Bengaluru, Delhi and Noida offices.</li><li>Around 260 engineers will be coming from all IITs and the balance would be coming from other Tier-1 institutes.</li><li>Samsung had hired 1200 engineers in 2019 as well from these top colleges.</li></ul>South Korean smartphone giant Samsung is looking forward to recruit more than 1000 engineers in India from top engineering colleges like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Birla Institute of Technology &amp; Science (BITS) Pilani, Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) and many more this year for its Bengaluru, Delhi and Noida offices. Samsung is planning to hire students from multiple streams including computer science, electronics and communications, electrical engineering, mathematics and computing, instrumentation and information technology to support its efforts to build innovative solutions for India-specific challenges. “As businesses continue to expand and grow, we will be hiring 1000 plus engineers for our R&amp;D [research and development] centres from top notch engineering colleges. These engineers will work at our R&amp;D centres located in Bangalore, Delhi and Noida,” said <keyword id="1072012" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sameer-wadhawan" source="Orion">Sameer Wadhawan</keyword>, senior vice president and head of human resources at <keyword id="107877" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samsung-india" source="Orion">Samsung India</keyword> in an interaction with Business Insider. He said, “One-fourth (260) engineers will be coming from all IITs and the balance would be coming from other tier one schools.” When asked about the average salary package, which the company will be offering to their new employees, Wadhawan said, “We are offering a very competitive compensation [when] hiring from campuses. That is why we are able to hire more than 1000 plus engineers year after year”. Samsung had hired 1200 engineers in 2019 as well from these top colleges, but they joined the company in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reason behind this massive hiring was its main agenda to strengthen their R&amp;D centres. “This is part of our continued growth and expansion plans in India. For us R&amp;D has been on the front. We opened our first R&amp;D centre in India in 1996 in Bengaluru, and a factory in the same year. This shows our commitment to the Indian market and India-related product and talent,” Wadhawan added. The smartphone maker company witnessed a high attrition rate in the last couple of months. “Attrition rate is slightly higher than usual and it is more to do with the simple demand and supply issue, also there are so many tech jobs available, but the situation is not alarming for us”, he said. Attrition rate, also known as churn rate is the rate at which employees leave the company and is often calculated as an annual figure. Samsung, in their third quarter results which came out in October, reported a 28% increase in their operating profit from its previous quarter. Samsung to hire over 1000 engineers in India this year from top engineering colleges like IITs and BITS, Pilani

E-commerce companies, especially start-ups are going to find it difficult to hire engineering graduates from leading Indian institutes, since the placement teams at these institutes have decided to go strict after some start-ups failed to deliver on the offers they had made in last placement seasons. 
 
Placement teams at institutes, like Birla Institute of Technology &amp; Science (BITS) Pilani University and Delhi Technological University (DTU) told ET that for the coming placement seasons, they would be turning extra vigilant and introduce stringent background checks on companies from e-commerce sector. Till last season, these companies were the most sought-after recruiters, thanks to their loaded pockets and the surging start-up wave in the country.

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Surathkal, NIT-Trichy and Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad are also pursuing similar strategies for their ongoing and upcoming placements. 
 
"Barring some big names such as Amazon and Paytm, e-commerce companies will have difficulty attracting the best students this year," said a professor in charge of placements at a top NIT on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Last season, as many as 42 students from BITS Pilani, got their offers from start-ups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Flipkart-calls-deferring-joining-dates-of-campus-recruits-a-tough-decision-but-necessary/articleshow/52437180.cms">Flipkart</a> and Grofers deferred or revoked. Taking a lesson from that, the placement team has, this time, allowed only five to six recruiters from e-commerce and start-up sector to hire their students from the campus.

G Balasubramanian, chief placement officer (India and Dubai) at BITS Pilani, said that the institute will now ask new recruiters in said sectors to sign an agreement that states that they are liable to pay six months' compensation along with an experience certificate in case they revoke a job offer.

NO STARTUPS AT DTU THIS MTH 
Delhi Technological University, which started its placement season a few days ago, has decided that no start-ups would be invited for the entire first month of the season. They have only allowed one e-commerce company, Amazon, to attend the placement season. Other e-commerce companies and start-ups could be allowed to attend placements much later, in the second phase of the placements.

Hiring engineers for your start-ups is not going to be easy

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): <keyword id="19953789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras" source="keywords">IIT Madras</keyword> has been ranked the <keyword id="19925221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best" source="keywords">best</keyword> <keyword id="22759867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-educational-institution" source="keywords">higher educational institution</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in an overall category in the ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories "overall and engineering" The NIRF rankings lists was released for 13 different categories, including universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. <ul><li>India is moving towards digitizing classroom learning across the country </li><li>The initiative will come into implementation from next academic session — 2019-2020. </li><li>It will focus on several domains including technology, mathematics, science and engineering. </li></ul>In line with its ‘Digital India’ development agenda, the Indian government is reportedly planning to invest heavily in modernising classrooms in India. On Wednesday, the Indian government <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/centre-launches-9-000-crore-plan-to-digitize-education-delivery-1550683075713.html">launched</a> an initiative to bring digital boards as part of a broader digital initiative, promising an investment of ₹90 billion in state-run schools and colleges. Starting next academic year — 2019- 2020 — the initiative will be implemented over three years and cover over 150,000 schools for classes 9th to 12th and “thousands of colleges” across the country, India’s Human Resource Minister Prakash Javedekar reportedly said. "Some 60-70 years back there was an 'Operation Blackboard' because that was the need of the hour then. But the country has progressed over the years, and now we need an Operation Digital Blackboard," IANS reported citing Prakash Javadekar. Its use will initially extend to subjects including focus on technology, mathematics, engineering and science. Overall, the move is aimed at making learning more interactive. Digital boards have been successfully used by many business schools. With analytics emerging as the hottest sector under technology, the initiative will include domains such as machine learning, analytics and artificial intelligence. The overall cost will be shared by both states and centre in a 60:40 ratio, with the centre spending most on the initiative. However, the expenses on colleges and schools will be funded by University Grants Commission (UGC) through loans, <a href="http://education-delivery-1550683075713.html">said</a> the Livemint report. From blackboards to digital boards: India infuses ₹90 billion to modernise classrooms

<keyword id="58192" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Common-Admission-Test">Common Admission Test</keyword> (<keyword id="16855" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cat">CAT</keyword>), the test that Indian students have to pass to get an MBA degree from prestigious colleges, continues to be topped by candidates with engineering backgrounds. 
 
The recent report was submitted by Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, one of India’s top management colleges. 
 Out of the total of 1.8 lakh people who appeared in <keyword id="2970556" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="CAT-2015">CAT 2015</keyword>, 17 students scored 100 percentile and all 17 of them had engineering degrees. 
 
"Many students with an engineering background are bent on pursuing an engineering-MBA combination and prepare accordingly. People from other backgrounds don't always take the CAT equally seriously. Also, a lot of the best students from streams such as physics, chemistry and English don't even opt for CAT," said CAT convenor Tathagata Bandyopadhyay of IIM-A. "Otherwise, motivated students from other streams can fare just as well."

Engineering students still come first when it comes to cracking CAT

Companies like SAP, General Mills, Snapdeal and Marico are scouting for best talent to strengthen their respective technology competencies, especially in mobility, big data and analytics. 
 
They are aggressively hiring techies from India and abroad. SAP plans to add 1,000 engineers in next one year to its lab in India, its second-largest globally. For this, it will increase the intake of graduates from the country's premier engineering colleges. 
 
Due to shortage of niche talent, the company will look for techies overseas, including Silicon Valley and Europe. 
 
Economic Times reported that about 70% of the German software company's 6,500 employees in India are part of its R&amp;D and product engineering, while 20% are in consulting and implementation and the rest in sales and marketing. 
 
"Hires will be largely in R&amp;D and product engineering. In the past 75% of professionals with experience in SAP technology were hired and only 25% hiring was niche skills. This year the ratio will change to 50:50, between conventional SAP hiring and high-end technology-data scientists, research analysts and architects," Anil Warrier, director and India head of talent acquisition at SAP, told ET. 
 
SAP is looking to both groom talent from within and new hires. Apart from offering stocks to attract talent, the company is banking on other benefits. "SAP offers its employees work across the globe. Here, you can easily work in four or five locations. High percentage of our leadership team is people who have joined us as college graduates," Warrier told the financial daily. 
 
India’s online marketplace Snapdeal wants to double the number of people in its technology team by appointing 1,000 people by the end of this year, including talent from Silicon Valley to build a product and engineering leadership team. 
 
"We will bring in the best of talent in the space of technology as technology is the backbone for runining a big enterprise like ours," Saurabh Nigam, Vice President of HR at Snapdeal, told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, Managing Director at General Mills Mainak Dhar said the company intends to up the manufacturing at its Indian plant for which it was required to have more talent around technology. 
 
Marico is looking for experts in cutting edge technologies to further build its consumer product offerings. “We are looking at talent beyond India especially to build our strength around innovation and R&amp;D," Ashutosh Telang, Marico's chief human resources officer, told financial daily.

SAP, Snapdeal aggressively scouting for techies to hire best talent

<ul><li>Vocational trainings and jobs are slowly gaining momentum in the Indian education sector. </li><li>The rise in the demand is due to the higher or equal compensation that it offers — compared to that of engineering and management graduates from tier II colleges. </li><li>According to a joint report by TeamLease and ET, the salary offered in <keyword id="763343" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vocational-jobs">vocational jobs</keyword> goes up to ₹60,000 per month. </li><li>On the flipside, a large chunk of its population — nearly 93% — never received any vocational or technical training, despite the government’s Skill India initiative. </li></ul>Indians are training themselves to not just become doctors, engineers and data scientists. A large number of them are learning how to become a technician, an electrician, an artisan or even a fashion designer. This may not be only because of the distorted employment scenario in the country. The demand for these jobs is rising due to the higher or equal compensation that it offers — when compared to engineering and management graduates from tier II colleges. According to a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/want-to-be-an-mba-why-not-electrician/articleshow/72500383.cms?from=mdr">joint report by TeamLease and ET</a>, the salary offered in vocational jobs goes up to ₹60,000 per month. Demand for vocational skills are high. At the starting level, comparisons are startling,” Rituparna Chakraborty, cofounder of TeamLease Services told ET. This high demand supply gap is due to lack of formal training for vocational jobs. ‘KPIT Sparkle 2017’ is a national design and development innovation contest held every year. M K Stalin, President of <keyword id="294965" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dravida-Munnetra-Kazhagam">Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam</keyword> (DMK) <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/dmk-left-slam-move-to-impose-sanskrit-in-anna-university-no-course-is-compulsory-says-the-varsity-1603375-2019-09-26">said</a> that "It is condemnable to attempt imposition of Sanskrit by making philosophy compulsory in the syllabus of Anna University's CEG campus." The university responded by saying that the students are free to choose any audit course, and it is not a compulsion to go with Philosophy. "We are not imposing anything, in fact, we are not teaching Sanskrit at all," it argued. The university rolled out six audit courses in all as per the guidelines of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). "To provide students with well-rounded development, we are introducing more and more courses in humanities," the university noted. Demanding withdrawal of the subject from the engineering syllabus, CPI (M) state unit secretary K Balakrishnan said, "This is against the principles of secularism. Introducing the teaching of a particular religion in a syllabus studied by students from all faiths and the state government standing by that, is not acceptable."
