As part of the Congress' day-long campaign of holding protests and voicing opposition on social media to holding of the entrance examinations, Gandhi tweeted and also put out a video in support of students. "NEET-JEE aspirants' safety should not be compromised due to the failures of the government. Government must listen to all stakeholders and arrive at a consensus," he tweeted with the hashtag 'Speak Up For Student Safety'. With the tweet, Gandhi also tagged a video of him urging the government to listen to students and take a decision only after reaching a consensus. "You are the students and you are going to take this country to new heights. Everybody understands what has happened over the last three or four months," the former Congress chief said in the video. "Everybody understands the mishandling of COVID-19, the devastation that has been caused, the economic destruction, the pain that this country has had to bear. Now what I don't understand is why you should be held responsible and why further pain should be imposed on you," Gandhi said, addressing students. Alleging that the government has been incompetent, he asked why the Centre should force anything on students. "It is important that the government listens to the students, they are wise, they have the interest of this country at heart and any decision that is made with regard to these exams is made after a conversation and after a consensus has been developed and this is my message to the government," he said. Gandhi urged the government to have a conversation with students and resolve this issue peacefully. They will also not be required to go through a separate examination to secure a licence to practice medicine, according to the proposed draft. The draft excludes All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from the given criteria. The candidates wanting to enroll in PG courses in AIIMS will still have to go through the mandatory entrance exam. In addition to this, the NEET Super Speciality exam will also be mandatory to study Master of Surgery (Mch). The draft NMC Bill was tabled in the Parliament in 2017. It focussed at introducing a ‘bridge course’ that will enable medical practitioners of alternative medicine to pursue allopathy. However, it faced criticism from medical professionals and health associations in India. The bill was later revised with several amendments including aggressive punishments for unauthorised practice of medicine — a year long imprisonment or a fine of up to ₹500,000. However, to address the shortage of medical professionals, the government has <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/4800-mbbs-seats-reserved-for-economically-weaker-students-5826733/">allocated 26% more seats</a> for MBBS aspirants in the last two years — reserving nearly 5,000 seats for economically weaker sections. MBBS doctors can skip entrance exams for MD and MS courses, if Health Ministry has its way

The course will be available online from 29 July. Launched by the Indian government, Swayam provides open online courses with teaching and learning resources to its citizens. “ISRO will go ‘back to the moon’ today. Learn Aerospace Engineering with Swayam, who knows, if you are a part of the journey the next time,” the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry said in a tweet.

It will also conduct ‘Introduction to rocket propulsion’ course for three months. In the aerospace domain, IIT Bombay will also launch a three month long course on ‘Introduction to aerospace engineering/flight’ imparting the basics of aerospace engineering. ‘Vibration and structural dynamics’ course will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur. The demand for Aerospace engineers has been on the rise, globally. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the sector will create jobs at a rate of 6% by 2026. Indian government launches online aerospace engineering course for those who aspire to reach the moon

<ul><li>The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the <keyword id="178605" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joint-Entrance-Examination">Joint Entrance Examination</keyword> (JEE) are two of the most competitive exams, not only in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> but globally as well. </li><li>The <keyword id="581232" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword> (NTA) has announced that they will provide free coaching to aspirants starting next year through their test practice centers. </li><li>While the move may empower candidates from rural and semi-urban regions, it may also deal a blow to India’s booming coaching industry.</li></ul>In a new initiative taken up by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India, they will be providing <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/free-govt-coaching-for-jee-neet-from-2019/articleshow/65600522.cms?from=mdr">free coaching for students</a> preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The NTA plans on converting their test practice centers to serve as teaching centers starting 2019. There are around 2,697 test practice centers will be operational starting 1 September. While the JEE ranks second in the world with respect to its toughness, no other examination has been in the news as much as the NEET. In fact, the NEET was discontinued altogether back in 2013 before making a comeback three years later. Even now, the <a href="https://www.dailyo.in/variety/will-jee-neet-twice-a-year-help-students-medical-engineering-cbse-national-testing-agency/story/1/25387.html">decision</a> to conduct the exam twice a year, announced in July, is in flux with reports <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/neet-2019-might-not-be-conducted-twice-a-year-1310614-2018-08-10">suggesting</a> that it might be rolled back all together. Impact on the coaching industry Even with cut-offs being lowered, the exams increase in their level of competitiveness with each year as more and more applicants come forward. And, with more applicants coming on-board, the otherwise unorganised coaching industry is booming. In turn, the financial burden of pursuing <keyword id="3113818" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="engineering-in-India">engineering in India</keyword> is becoming an increasingly big issue for many aspirants as these coaching centres charge a bomb for their classes. A study by ASSOCHAM reveals that 70% of the parents, right from high-income families to the bottom stratum of the social hierarchy, are in the favor of spending hefty sums at these coaching institutes in the name of education. Reports <a href="https://ideasmakemarket.com/2013/09/aug-entry16-analysis-of-private-coaching-industry-in-india.html">indicate</a> that middle-class parents shell-out nearly one-third of their income so that their children can attend these private tuitions. But despite these private tuitions flourishing across the country, the reality of the situation remains unaltered. An exam like the JEE can only be cleared by 5,500 and more than 300,000 students appear for the exam. It’s that extreme level of competition that has led to the coaching industry showing a consistent growth of 35% over the past six years. And, that is exactly why free coaching for students will deal a big blow to the industry. That being said, the notion that private education is superior to public education still prevails in India. There might not be an actual loss for the coaching institution since the coaching centers don't cater to students who can’t afford tuition anyway. According to the Human Resource Development Ministry, the aim is to empower candidates from rural and semi-urban centres. While the NEET is the national level entrance exam to gain admission into any graduate medical course in a government or a private medical college, the JEE is an all-India exam for admission into India’s leading engineering colleges like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Indian government is rolling out free coaching for two of the toughest exams in the world

Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy in consultation with TSCHE Chairman T. Papi Reddy approved the schedule of TS Common Entrance Tests (TSCETS-2020). A little over four lakh students are set to appear in the seven common entrance tests scheduled from August 31 to October 4. In order to ensure social distancing during the examinations in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the authorities decided to conduct key tests like EAMCET and PGECET on four days each with two shifts per day. <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> State Engineering Common Entrance Test (ECET) for Diploma and for B Sc. (Mathematic) <keyword id="9806358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="degree-candidates">degree candidates</keyword> will be held on August 31. More than 28,000 students have registered for the exam including nearly 1,300 in Andhra Pradesh. TS EAMCET Engineering for admission into engineering courses will be conducted on September 9, 10,11 and 14 with two shifts each day. A total of 1,42,860 candidates have registered for the exam and they include 25,512 candidates who will appear in the exams in Andhra Pradesh. <keyword id="9806360" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-postgraduate-engineering-common-entrance-test">The Postgraduate Engineering Common Entrance Test</keyword> (PGCET) is scheduled for 21,758 registered candidates from September 21 to 24. More than 78,000 students have registered for <keyword id="9806359" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ts-eamcet-agriculture">TS EAMCET Agriculture</keyword> exams which will be held on September 28 and 29. The exams will be conducted in two shifts every day. The Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) for admission into MBA and MCA courses will be conducted for 55,578 applicants on September 30 and October 1. The TSCHE has scheduled the Education Common Entrance Test (EDCET) for 43,680 candidates on October 1 and 3. LAWCET will be conducted on October 4 for which 30,150 students have applied. <ul class="summary-list"><li>An off-duty pilot was charged with trying to turn off a plane's engines while riding in the cockpit. </li><li>The incident highlights how aviation insiders are able to skirt stringent safety procedures.</li></ul>An off-duty pilot was accused of attempting to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/off-duty-alaska-airlines-pilot-arrested-charges-turn-off-engines-2023-10">turn off a plane's engines mid-flight</a> despite conforming to the aviation industry's strict safety regulations — highlighting the potential havoc airline personnel can wreak even while operating within the system.An Alaska Airlines pilot was accused of trying to shut off the plane engines and later attempting to grab the handle of an emergency door during Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 operated by Horizon Air from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco, California on Sunday, according to federal and state court documents reviewed by Insider.The off-duty pilot, Joseph Emerson, who told authorities he had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/off-duty-pilot-charged-alaska-airlines-court-documents-2023-10">taken psychedelic mushrooms</a> for the first time about 48 hours prior to the flight, was charged Tuesday with one federal count of interfering with flight crew members and attendants, as well as dozens of state charges of attempted murder and reckless endangerment.Emerson, 44, pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday. His attorney did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.The on-duty pilots who were operating the plane carrying 80 passengers and four crew members were able to subdue Emerson in the cockpit before he was able to send the plane into free fall, but the bizarre incident lays bare the ways in which aviation insiders are able to skirt the industry's stringent safety procedures, experts said."Post-9/11 protections have made our cockpits very secure," said Anthony Brickhouse, an air safety investigator and associate professor at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. "But those procedures were to protect flight crew from passengers."<h2>The 'jump seat'</h2>Emerson was riding in the plane's cockpit "jump seat" when he began acting strangely, according to federal court documents. The jump seat — or sometimes seats depending on the size of the aircraft — is located behind the pilots' seats, giving Emerson easy access to the fire handles located inside the cockpit which activate the plane's emergency fire suppression system and cut off fuel from the engines, according to federal court documents.The jump seat is often used by off-duty pilots to travel to and from work, as well as industry inspectors and professionals, Brickhouse said. Airlines have to approve any person who sits in the jump seat and off-duty pilots must present their credentials to the crew, according to The AP; a flight's captain also has final say over any additional people riding in the cockpit."As far as we know, this pilot was perfectly legal and perfectly certified to be riding in the jump seat," Brickhouse said of Emerson.The two on-duty pilots later told police they didn't notice anything strange about Emerson's behavior prior to takeoff. The pilots said they talked casually with him about different types of aircraft and the weather, according to a criminal complaint."Once you're in that cockpit, you're someone who is supposed to be there," Brickhouse said.<h2>Pilot psychology</h2>The on-duty pilots later told authorities that Emerson was behaving normally for the first half of the flight until he tossed his headset across the cockpit and said "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-airlines-off-duty-pilot-accused-shut-plane-engines-details-2023-10">I'm not okay.</a>" He then reached up and grabbed the red fire handles and pulled them down, the criminal complaint said.One of the on-duty pilots grabbed Emerson's wrist while the other declared an in-flight emergency, according to court documents. They briefly wrestled with Emerson before he settled down. He then left the cockpit and was restrained by the flight crew, according to court records.Because of the nature of their profession, pilots have to undergo a psychological screening during their regular medical exams, the AP reported. Emerson had his most recent exam in September, according to the outlet, which cited Federal Aviation Administration records.During these required exams, FAA-approved medical examiners interview the pilot and note whether they have received any psychiatric treatment and any medications they're taking, The AP reported.There is seemingly little in Emerson's immediately accessible public record or history to indicate he would be involved in Sunday's incident, according to media reports. He had completed all of his required professional certifications and had no criminal record, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/24/us/alaska-airlines-off-duty-pilot-arraignment.html">The New York Times reported.</a>Friends and former flying colleagues of Emerson's told The AP he was a nice, normal-seeming guy who was "fanatical" about flying safety.But Emerson told police he became depressed about half a year ago and believed he was having a "nervous breakdown" after having not slept for 40 hours prior to the incident, according to court documents.According to a probable cause statement, Emerson told police he had taken the psychedelic mushrooms about 48 hours before he tried to stop the engines. According to an affidavit filed Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court, Emerson told authorities he had struggled with depression for six years and said a friend had recently died.<h2>Industry changes</h2>It's too soon to tell whether the incident will prompt any industry changes, Brickhouse said."In safety, whenever we have what we call a "near miss," where tragedy did not happen, it presents you a good opportunity to learn from it, review your procedures, and make sure you have everything in order," he said.Ross Aimer, a retired airline pilot who is now the CEO of an aviation consulting firm, told The AP that the Sunday incident could put off-duty pilots' ability to ride in the cockpit jump seat in jeopardy — a development that he said could cause air travel to come to a "grinding halt."But that would likely be a pointless change, experts said."If a pilot wanted to do something nefarious why wouldn't they wait until they were on one of their regularly scheduled flights as a captain?" Brickhouse said.
