Bernie Sanders. He's calling on the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> giant to revamp its minimum wage, in addition to its rules around leave.</p><p>"Walmart, which is owned by the wealthiest family in America, is not a poor company," Sanders said in a <a href="https://www.sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/sanders-statement-on-walmart-paid-leave" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. "If Walmart can afford $20 billion for stock buybacks to enrich wealthy shareholders, it can afford to raise the pay of all its workers to a living wage. Walmart can and must pay all of its workers at least $15 an hour with good benefits."</p><p>Walmart did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p>"We're excited to introduce a new hourly attendance policy that rewards our people when they're here and provides support when they can't be," a Walmart spokesperson said in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-walmart-minimum-wage-2018-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previous</a> statement to Business Insider. "These changes are based directly on feedback from our associates who wanted more flexibility to miss work when life happens, while also increasing rewards for consistently coming to work and serving our customers. In 2018, the senator teamed up with California Rep. Ro Khanna on a bill called the Stop WALMART Act. Using stock <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-buybacks-keep-bull-market-afloat-8-companies-2018-9-1027561698" target="_blank" rel="noopener">buybacks</a> as leverage, the bill would force corporations to raise hourly wages to a minimum of $15, provide seven days of sick leave, and limit CEO compensation.</p><p>Sanders previously clashed with Amazon over its minimum wage. In October, the online retailer boosted its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-raises-minimum-wage-to-15-dollars-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">minimum wage</a> to $15 an hour.</p><p>And Sanders isn't the only one criticizing Walmart in the wake of its time-off policy announcement.</p><p>"We've been calling on Walmart to publicly commit to a healthy sick time policy that allows us to take care of ourselves and our families," North Carolina-based Walmart employee and OUR Walmart leader Shashauna Phillips said in a statement. "Walmart is responding to our call for change with a new policy. But what they are giving with one hand, they are taking with the other - the corporation still doesn't accept doctor's notes and is even encouraging associates to come to work when they're sick with a new bonus plan."</p><p><span>Under the new system, Walmart employees will get six days of "protected PTO" for emergencies and illnesses every year. Every six months, employees will also accrue a pool of five days to use for unexpected absences. The company's vacation policy will remain unchanged.</span></p><p><span>The revamped system will give employees with good attendance the opportunity to earn some extra cash. </span>Taking the six days of "protected PTO" won't cut employees out of the running for the quarterly bonus. Bernie Sanders blasts Walmart's new employee leave policy

All of its just over 5,000 full-time <keyword id="6357081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="employees">employees</keyword> will be able to take 16 weeks of paid leave, with an additional period of flexible scheduling in the following eight months.</p><p>This flexible time is tailored to a specific employee's needs and expectations, and can result in a maximum of 64 additional paid days of modified working - like working from home with reduced hours or taking a full day off - contingent on that employee working for two full days each week.</p><p>It's a significant change from the existing policy, which is 16 weeks of unpaid leave offered only to mothers, and with no flexible time.</p><p><a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/blog/best-parental-leave-policies/">Glassdoor data</a> on American companies' parental leave policies shows that Reynolds' new policy will be among the best in the United States. The US does not have a federal parental leave policy, although it appears <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-america-doesnt-have-paid-leave-2017-9">most Americans want it</a>. Business Insider's Rachel Gillett <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-america-doesnt-have-paid-leave-2017-9">has reported</a> that the start of a federal policy in the US will have to be private businesses getting on board - and they are, slowly but surely. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/docusign-ceo-parental-leave-benefits-2017-9">Tech companies</a> in particular have made headlines for progressive parental leave policies, some after their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harrys-gender-neutral-leave-policy-2017-6">leadership became parents</a> themselves.</p><p>Reynolds is the maker of tobacco brands like Newport, Camel, and Grizzly, and was acquired by British American Tobacco, the world's largest international tobacco company, for $54.5 billion last year. Candice Brown, Reynolds' VP of talent management, told Business Insider that the benefit is the result of researching what both employees and those in the job market were asking for.</p><p>"We recognized that it's important to our existing employees, and certainly important to the employees we hope to attract for the future," Brown said.</p><p>Brown said that she expects the benefit to both increase existing employee engagement and to increase the diversity of its workforce, which is predominantly male, with a 70-30 percentage split between male and female employees. A third of its workforce is identified as "millennial," translating to somewhere under the age of 38.</p><p>Brown said that the benefit will be announced to employees on Monday, and as a mother of two "who is still getting up for 2:00 a.m. feedings right now and still a bit tired," it's a day she's especially happy about. Tobacco giant Reynolds American will soon start offering a paid parental leave benefit among the best in the US

And if they conceive of that child themselves, they will receive an additional six to eight weeks of paid time off.</p><p>The new offerings are part of the company's expanded family-benefits program. Employees at Estée Lauder can now also seek up to $10,000 for adoption fees, $20,000 for fertility treatments, and child or elder care at a reduced rate.</p><p>Both hourly and salaried employees are eligible, as long as they work at least 30 hours per week and have been with the company at least three months. Before the change, Estée Lauder offered 12 weeks of paid parental leave, as well as up to $20,000 per year toward fertility treatments, to eligible workers.</p><p>In addition, the company is launching a back-to-work transition program for new parents. As part of this six-week program, Estée will give parents flexibility on where and when they work. For example, a new mom could work from home a few days per week if she chooses, or a dad could adjust his schedule in that he comes in earlier and leaves earlier than the usual 9 to 5. And those who qualify for Estée's new childcare/eldercare program expend a co-pay of $8 an hour.</p><p>The new parental-leave program is a generous policy for a company as big as Estée Lauder. In the US, many parental-leave programs prioritize <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/maternity-leave-worldwide-2017-8">birth mothers</a> - and therefore offer <a href="https://paidleave.us/leftout">limited benefits</a> to fathers, adoptive parents, foster parents, or LGBT parents. Hourly workers are also less likely to receive an extensive amount of paid leave, even though they are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/01/nyregion/paid-parental-leave-except-for-most-who-need-it.html">more likely to not be able to afford</a> newborn child care.</p><p>It's also fairly unusual to offer such a large reimbursement toward adoption, which <a href="https://www.americanadoptions.com/adopt/the_costs_of_adopting">costs</a> between $<span>34,093</span> and <span>$39,966</span> on average for American parents. In recent years, a growing number of large American companies have started including adoption reimbursement as part of their benefits packages. American Express, for example, will give <span>up to <a href="https://www.davethomasfoundation.org/american-express-ranked-1-best-adoption-friendly-workplace/">$35,000 per adoption</a> to eligible, salaried and hourly employees. </span></p><p>One reason for Estée's expanded policy was to stay competitive when prospective employees are considering benefits packages from other companies, according to Latricia Parker, Estée Lauder's Executive Director of Global Benefits. Approximately 84% of Estée's American workforce are also women, who tend to take more parental leave than men.</p><p>Estée's expanded benefits package seeks to acknowledge that families are diverse as well. Its employees might want to adopt regardless of whether they're able to physically conceive. Fathers may be the lead parent and need some extra time off.</p><p>"We're seeing a general shift away from focusing on more traditional benefits, like medical and dental," Parker told BI. "Now, it's all about the individual, rather than employers dictating what's right for them. Employees want to understand the options available to them ... We [Estée Lauder] don't want to dictate what their families should look like."</p><p>The cosmetics giant is following several other major corporations that have recently made similar changes to their family-leave policies in the US. As of February 2018, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/01/upshot/lowes-joins-other-big-employers-in-offering-paid-parental-leave.html">the nation's 20 largest employers</a> now <span>offer paid parental leave to at least some of their workers. Out of these, IBM offers the most extensive family-leave program for hourly and salaried employees: 20 weeks of paid leave for birth mothers and 12 weeks for other types of parents. As an outlier, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-announces-unlimited-maternity-and-paternity-leave-2015-8">Netflix announced in 2015</a> that it gives parents up to a year of paid time off.</span></p><p><span>All three companies offer many more weeks of paid parental leave than the national <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/maternity-leave">maternity-leave</a> average: <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/paid-maternity-leave-us-worst-countres-world-donald-trump-family-leave-plan-women-republican-social-a7606036.html">2.8 weeks</a> for women on a typical salary. According to <a href="https://paidleave.us/leftout">a 2017 report</a>, more than 114 million Americans do not have any form of paid parental leave.</span></p><p><span>The <a href="https://www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/">Family Medical Leave Act</a> currently gives women 12 weeks of job-protected unpaid leave, but many workers don't qualify. Estee Lauder is now paying employees $10,000 to adopt as part of its new parental-leave policy

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11929276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="united-airlines" source="Orion">United Airlines</keyword> has established a vaccination policy for employees who have requested a medical or religious exemption.</li><li>The policy allows temporary leave for employees with an approved religious or medical exemption beginning October 2.</li><li>Front-facing employees who have a denied exemption and do not get vaccinated will be fired.</li></ul><p>United Airlines has strengthened its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-requiring-us-employees-get-covid-19-vaccine-2021-8">employee vaccination requirement policy</a>, which was already one of the strictest in the industry.</p><p>On August 6, United announced it would require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 25, but pushed that deadline up to September 27 after the FDA fully approved the Pfizer-BioNTech <keyword id="11895018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-vaccine" source="Orion">COVID vaccine</keyword>. </p><p>In an email sent to employees Wednesday and seen by Insider, United outlined its vaccination policy regarding workers that have since applied for medical or religious accommodation. According to United:</p><ul><li>Front-facing operational workers, including flight attendants, pilots, and airport customer service agents, who have an their religious exemption approved will be put on temporary, unpaid leave starting October 2. Workers with an approved medical exemption will be put on medical leave consistent with the individual's collective bargaining agreement on October 2.</li><li>Front-facing operational employees that have their religious or medical exemption application denied will have five weeks to get fully vaccinated from the date of the denial or be separated from the company according to their CBA. They must recieve their first shot by September 27.</li><li>Operational employees with minimal personal interaction, like ramp agents and mechanics, have the same policies as front-facing staff for denied medical and religious exemptions. However, because it is easier to social distance and a lot of the work is done outside, non-front-facing workers with an approved exemption will only remain on unpaid leave until United has established a safety policy for unvaccinated workers, like masks and testing.</li><li>For non-operational staff, like those who work at headquarters, will follow the same policies as non-front-facing workers. According to United, management employees do not have the option to work from home if they choose to not get the COVID vaccine because most are on a hybrid schedule, meaning they must occasionally report to the office for meetings or other critical work functions.</li></ul><p>United explained that the decision to create a strict policy for front-facing workers was because the company does not want to put unvaccinated workers in a high contact environment with colleagues and customers. Employees who were put on temporary, unpaid leave will be welcomed back to the company once the pandemic recedes to an acceptable level.</p><p>Since the August 6 announcement requiring employees to be vaccinated, over half of its unvaccinated population have gotten the shot, according to United.</p>

United is forcing its employees who don't get vaccinated due to medical or religious reasons to stay home mostly unpaid

<br /> Thanks to the rising upward culture of <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword>, a new benchmark has been set for policies for women employees. To this effect, <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> has now rolled out a set of woman-centric policies, which include paid maternity leave of seven months, 18 months of half pay-half working day post-maternity support, flexibility to choose your working hours, secure performance ratings even during the maternity leaves and flexible work durations.<br />

Not only this, if an employee completes five years at work, (s)he would be able to avail one-year leave at half pay given that you are a care-giver at home.<br />

As of now, the policy has only been unveiled only at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Sons-ups-stake-in-AirAsia-to-49-equals-that-of-partner/articleshow/51584316.cms">Tata Sons</a>, which is the holding company of the group with businesses ranging from salt to software. Other companies of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-reality-of-Tata-Group-Few-companies-making-moneyothers-less-so/articleshow/50168486.cms">Tata group</a> are also likely to adopt these policies in the near future.<br />

"Our intent is to show that we care through a deep organisational commitment towards our woman employees. Maternity, for example, has been a key focus area. By offering seven months leave followed by post-maternity support of 18 months, we are providing a viable option to mothers to be at home during the critical early childhood," NS Rajan, the group chief HRO at Tata Sons, told ET.<br />

The policies would come into effect from this month itself, and the seven-month paid leave can be taken from two months prior to child birth.<br />

One very important aspect of maternity leaves is the career progression of women employees, who are often ranked less in performance ratings during and after their maternity leaves. Keeping this in mind, the policy says that performance rating during maternity leave and flexible work will be based on the average of the previous two years' ratings or ratings for the ongoing year, whichever is higher. Also, promotions would not be impacted because of maternity leaves, flexible work, work from home, all of which would be considered as continuous service.<br />

"Working women today perform multiple roles much beyond their work at office. Looking after home, attending to children and elders is a cherished role. Our approach, be it special leave and flexible alternatives, are aimed at recognising these important roles women play in their families and stand by our woman employees wherever needed," Rajan said.<br />

Seven months of paid leaves, flexible working hours and retrospective performance appraisal: Tata Sons’ new maternity leave policy is every working woman’s dream

<br /> After taking extra care of expecting mothers and would-be-fathers, eCommerce major <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> is now offering an allowance of Rs 50,000 to employees looking to adopt children. <br /><br /> The "<keyword id="6411790" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="adoption">adoption</keyword> allowance", effective July 10, can be used towards legal, agency, regulatory costs or any other expenses that may arise during the adoption process, a Flipkart spokesperson told PTI. <br /><br />

	Flipkart took this decision to increase India’s adoption rates which have been dismal though India has one of the largest population of children who are abandoned, deserted or are in institutional care.
<br /><br /> According to the new policy, Flipkart will allow its female employees adopting a child below the age of 12 months the same benefits as under <keyword id="78369" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maternity-leave">maternity leave</keyword> policy, i.e., six months paid leave along with four months of flexible working hours. <br /><br />

	For children aged over a year, the employee can avail three months paid leave and four months of flexible working hours, the spokesperson said.

	The male employees can avail up to six months of paid adoption leave (can be availed within the first six months) and four months of flexible working hours.
<br /><br />

	"If the employee is looking at extending their adoption leaves, but they don't have enough leaves left, they can take unpaid leave for up to three months and continuity on the same job is assured," the spokesperson said.
<br /><br />

	Previously, Flipkart relaxed its maternity and paternity policies for the conveniences of its employees.

Noble step by Flipkart to increase adoption rates in the country

This policy is inclusive of natural births, adoption, and surrogacy. </span><span></span></p><p><span><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We recognize that families come in different shapes, sizes, and format, and we've tried to be as inclusive as possible in this policy," </span></span><span>David Almeida, AB InBev's Chief People Officer, told Business Insider. </span></p><p><span>AB InBev was formed as a merger of Belgian-Brazilian brewer InBev and St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch in 2008. Its brands include Budweiser, Busch, Bud Light, Stella Artois, and Goose Island. </span></p><p><span>The brewing company's new parental leave policy also allows for in-vitro fertilization leave and return-to-work transition programs. These programs would vary globally, and Almeida could not provide details on them. </span><span></span></p><p><span><a href="http://www.anheuser-busch.com/newsroom/2016/04/parental-leave-policy-2016.html">Previously,</a> the Leuven, Belgium-based company's parental leave policy included language about the "birth parent" rather than the "primary caregiver," as it does now. </span><span>The birth parent could previously have eight weeks of maternity leave along with eight weeks of parental bonding leave for a total of 16 weeks. </span></p><p><span>Under the old policy, adoptive parents or fathers who chose to be the primary caregivers were not be able to take 16 weeks of paid leave. Now they can. </span><span></span></p><p><span>Language in family leave policies has attracted controversy in recent years. Budweiser's parent company is now giving nearly 200,000 employees four months of paid parental leave

The new policy, however, <a href="http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/08/06/430069888/netflixs-new-generous-parental-leave-policy-leaves-some-employees-out">excluded employees </a>in the company's DVD distribution centers, many of whom are hourly workers. </p><p><span>But i</span><span>n <a href="http://www.talentmgt.com/articles/7675-netflix-improves-part-time-parental-leave-policy">an interview with Talent Management</a> last week, </span><span>Tawni Cranz, Netflix's chief talent officer, announced that </span><span>Netflix would yet again change its parental leave policy, this time to allow four months of parental leave for its hourly workers, who will receive all of their pay during their time away from work.</span></p><p><span>DVD workers previously received a minimum of 12 paid weeks of maternity leave, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/netflix-parental-leave-policy_55e7239ce4b0aec9f3556d1d">a Netflix spokeswoman told The Huffington Post</a> earlier this year.</span></p><p><span><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/netflix-paid-parental-leave-hourly-workers_56685ae1e4b009377b233a79">The Huffington Post also reports</a> workers in customer service will receive 14 weeks of fully-paid parental leave at full pay.</span></p><p><span></span>"The way that we think about leave benefits and offerings is in line with how we think about comp," Cranz told Talent Management. "So when we think about compensation, we think about what is the market pay, what is going to be market competitive, and then also what is caring and compassionate for our employees, and what will they value?"</p><p>The change marks a substantial shift in policy for a major corporation, as benefits rarely extend beyond salaried employees.</p><p>Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993, qualifying American parents are guaranteed 12 weeks of unpaid family leave to care for a new child - but the policy is <span>restricted to full-time employees who have been with the company for more than a year<span>. </span></span>Indeed, the US is the only developed nation in the world that doesn't ensure any paid time off for new moms, according to <a href="http://www.ilo.org/global/publications/ilo-bookstore/order-online/books/WCMS_242615/lang--en/index.htm">a report from the International Labor Organization</a>.</p><p>And while <a href="http://www.bls.gov/opub/btn/volume-2/paid-leave-in-private-industry-over-the-past-20-years.htm">the US Bureau of Labor statistics</a> estimates that only 11% of all workers received paid family leave in 2012, that number drops to 4% for part-time workers. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Flickr / istolethetv" title_caption="Research shows that family bonding time with a new child benefits everyone." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/566892be2340f827018b47a8-960/dad-crossing-street-baby.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Flickr / istolethetv</span></p><p class="caption">Research shows that family bonding time with a new child benefits everyone.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Netflix's recent announcement has been met with mixed reviews so far from women's and worker rights groups that petitioned Netflix to include all of their employees in their new family leave program.</p><p>"While the new policy lags behind what employees petitioned for on Coworker.org - which was to provide hourly employees with the same paid parental leave benefits as salaried workers - it's an important change that will impact many families," says Tim Newman, campaigns director for Coworker.org, in a press release.</p><p>"We applaud Netflix's step in the right direction on parental leave, which occurred after months of pressure from nearly 50,000 UltraViolet members," says Nita Chaudhary, cofounder of UltraViolet, a national women's advocacy organization, in a press release.</p><p>"All moms and dads of all incomes deserve time to care for their new children. However, it is disappointing that Netflix is continuing their two-tiered system that says some parents deserve more time to bond with their children than others. Netflix just stepped up its leave policy - again

<br /><ul><li><strong>Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HP) India has extended its 26-week parental leave policy to fathers too.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Earlier, the policy included merely a five-days parental leave. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>With this, it plans to increase the workforce in India by 20% over the next five years.</strong></li><li><strong>It will also allow employees to work part-time for three years following the adoption or birth of the child.</strong></li></ul>Hewlett Packard (HP) India is giving new fathers the same number of parental leaves as mothers. <br /><br />The company said that its 26-weeks paid parental leave will now be applicable to both men and women — for childbirth and adoption. It also includes the facilitation of day-care centres across locations in India — which is eligible for children upto three years of age.<br /><br />The company extended parental leaves to six months in April 2019. Earlier, the policy included merely a five-days parental leave. <br /><br />The company aims to implement a culture of inclusivity to increase its employee retention rate. With this, it plans to increase the workforce in India by 20% over the next five years.<br /><br />“The benefits we are implementing around the globe reflect HPE’s commitment to attracting, nurturing and retaining the best talent in India,” HPE India VP and managing director Som Satsangi <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/hewlett-packard-enterprise-introduces-26-weeks-paid-paternal-leave-in-india/1683552/">told</a> news agency PTI.<br /><br />At HPE we are not only creating jobs, but also helping employees build long-term careers with the necessary support structure and working culture,” he added.<br /><br />In fact, the company allows its employees to work part-time for three years following the adoption or birth of the child.<br /><br />Overall, paid parental maternity leaves<a href="https://www.thehrdigest.com/parental-leave-for-new-dads-companies-that-boosted-their-paternity-leave/"> increased by 8%</a> during 2016-18, according to a study published by SHRM. <br /><br />It provides other employee benefits like life insurance and health insurance cover. From November 2019, the company will increase the insurance cover to twice the annual compensation of its employees.<br /><br />Indian startups like <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/334894">Zomato</a> have also stepped up their efforts to establish work-life balance. Hewlett Packard India extends its 6 month paid parental leave to fathers as well

The policy also allowed for unlimited paid time off, given approval from a manager.</p><p>"Dave<span> always believed companies should prioritize their employees' well-being," Sandberg <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sheryl">wrote in a Facebook announcement on Monday</a>. "Over these past two years without him, I've learned that when someone is going through hardship, the best thing we can do is show up and be there for them. Companies can show up through bereavement policies and coworkers can show up by encouraging each other to bring their whole selves to work."</span></p><p>The new 20-day policy puts SurveyMonkey in line with Facebook and Mastercard, which similarly worked with Sandberg to update their policies in January and June, respectively. Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg brings extended bereavement leave to her late husband's company

They said they got no response.</li><li>The US and Canada are both on the small list of countries that don't have federal requirements for employers to provide paid sick leave. </li><li>Another Accenture worker, located in a US office, seems to be getting different treatment.</li><li>Follow all of Business Insider's latest updates on the coronavirus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-virus-everything-we-know-deadly-2019-ncov-wuhan-spread-2020-1">here.</a></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime"><strong>Click here for more BI Prime stories. </strong></a></li></ul><p>A temporary staffer on the Facebook team at Accenture's St. Catharines office in Niagara, Canada, went unpaid for three days instead of going to work sick, according to an email thread conversation seen by Business Insider. </p><p>This employee asked to remain anonymous because they didn't want to jeopardize their job. </p><p>Accenture does not currently provide paid sick leave to temporary workers in Canada, the employee told Business Insider. In an email to the company's HR department reviewed by Business Insider, the employee raised concerns about employees coming in sick with the novel coronavirus, and asked if the company had plans to change this policy for temp workers like them. (The employee said they don't have coronavirus.) The HR team member had not, as of March 18, responded to the inquiry, according to the employee.  </p><p>Permanent full-time employees at Accenture Canada have up to 80 hours of paid sick leave and temporary workers are entitled to three days of unpaid leave each calendar year, according to the email thread. The three days of unpaid sick time is in line with <a href="https://www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0/sick-leave">Ontario's Employment Standards</a>. Accenture's benefits policies are different at its various international offices, the employee said. </p><p>A representative from Facebook verified that the tech company has a partnership with Accenture in Canada, and said it was not aware of the company's sick leave policy. </p><p>Accenture did not respond to multiple requests for comment. </p><p>The coronavirus pandemic has left many temporary and gig workers who lack such benefits with the difficulty of choosing between taking unpaid time off or coming into the office sick amid a developing global pandemic. </p><p>Coronavirus, which causes a disease known as COVID-19, has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-virus-everything-we-know-deadly-2019-ncov-wuhan-spread-2020-1">killed nearly 7,500 people</a> and infected more than 189,000. </p><p>Canada is<a href="https://cepr.net/documents/publications/paid-sick-days-2009-05.pdf"> among the small list of countries</a> with no federal requirements for paid sick leave. And health experts predict this is <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/03/12/as-coronavirus-spreads-which-u-s-workers-have-paid-sick-leave-and-which-dont/">worsening</a> the spread of the coronavirus.</p><p>Canada has a different set of sick leave policies by province - ranging from three days of unpaid leave in Ontario (where the Accenture employee is located) to 26 weeks in Quebec. It is unclear what Accenture's sick leave policy for temporary workers is in its other Canadian offices. Regardless of these laws, a <a href="http://morneaushepell.mediaroom.com/2015-06-10-Canadian-employees-more-aware-of-workplace-presenteeism-than-employers">2015 national survey</a> in Canada found that more than 47% of the workforce had gone to work while being sick.  </p><p>Outside of Canada, the people in the US who are least likely to get paid sick time are temp workers in sales, service jobs, construction, and farming, <a href="https://www.axios.com/coronavirus-paid-sick-leave-0a8fda7f-5bdd-44b8-81d5-304651f29b51.html">Axios previously reported.</a> But some employers are stepping up to the plate. More than 13 retail chains including Walmart, Trader Joe's, and Starbucks have adjusted their policies during the pandemic, encouraging employees to prioritize their health over work if they have any illness worries, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-changes-walmart-starbucks-employee-benefits-2020-3">Business Insider previously reported.</a></p><p>Ride-share company Uber said it might <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-may-temporarily-suspend-accounts-of-riders-drivers-with-coronavirus-cnn-2020-3">temporarily suspend</a> drivers with coronavirus and will offer financial help <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-may-temporarily-suspend-accounts-of-riders-drivers-with-coronavirus-cnn-2020-3">for two weeks.</a> Google, which relies on about 120,000 contract and temp workers, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-google-creates-fund-for-contractor-sick-pay-2020-3">created a fund that enabled</a> paid sick leave for those with potential COVID-19 symptoms or in quarantine. </p><p><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a> has recommended that people stay at home if ill or not feeling well, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-asking-employees-to-work-from-home-due-to-coronavirus-2020">growing list of companies</a> have asked employees to work remotely as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus. </p><p>When describing Accenture's benefits policy for temp workers in the Niagara office, the employee said it provides no benefits during a six- to eight-month period, after which the majority of temporary contractors are converted into permanent employees.</p><p>Earlier this month, an Accenture employee in China was diagnosed with coronavirus, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/accenture-employee-in-china-has-been-diagnosed-with-coronavirus-2020-3">an internal company memo</a> seen by Business Insider. The memo, sent to employees by Accenture CEO Julie Sweet, stated that "more than 100 colleagues in China and Italy have been quarantined due to government restrictions." The memo asked employees to "cancel any non-essential international travel and not to plan any additional travel until further notice." An Accenture spokesman confirmed the memo's authenticity.</p><p>Nevertheless, the temp employee told Business Insider that workers in Canadian offices are still not allowed to work remotely, and that they are also not allowed to have their cell phones on them. All employees at Accenture Canada are required to put their cell phones in lockers as a way to protect client confidentiality, the temp employee said. </p><p>"I hope this changes and they start allowing people to stay home," the employee added. </p><p>While some temporary employees at Accenture Canada are struggling with whether they should come into work sick, other full-time workers in US offices have had a different experience. Business Insider recently spoke with another Accenture full-time salaried employee based in the US, who explained that workers in US offices can work remotely.
