Investors continued to push significant money into sectoral, or thematic funds, with the category seeing inflows worth Rs 18,117.18 crores during August 2024. The inflows in this category remained largely flat last month, changing negligibly from Rs 18,386.35 crores in July 2024. During August, 5 new thematic mutual fund NFOs were launched, which raised a total of Rs 10,093.57 crore. <h2>42nd consecutive month of positive inflows</h2>This takes the total tally of existing sectoral fund schemes to 179. The next category with most schemes offered (42) is <keyword id="103549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ELSS" source="Orion">ELSS</keyword> (equity-linked savings scheme). Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director – Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India cautioned that investors should be cautious while selecting funds specially from the sector/thematic category. Such funds offer a very high-risk high return investment proposition and may not fit in the portfolio of every investor. "Either investors should themselves understand the dynamics of the underlying sector or theme to take a prudent investment decision, or they should have a strong advice available to them, who can help them take the right decision", he advised. Inflows in small-cap funds tapered significantly, and are now largely in line with funds garnered by large-cap and mid-cap funds. In August, large-cap funds saw inflows worth Rs 2,636.86 crore, while large and mid cap funds amassed Rs 3,293.74 crore. Small-cap funds raked in Rs 3,209.33 crore during the month. "With large cap segment faring relatively better from valuation point of view, investors have shifted their attention towards this category again. Besides, large cap funds add stability to the portfolio during the times of market volatility, and this could be another reason for investors to invest in these funds, given heightened volatility observed in the markets in the recent times. Additionally, with the valuation high in the mid and small cap segments, some shift towards large caps is not surprising", continued Srivastava. Also, investors showed far more proclivity for <keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mutual-Funds" source="Orion">mutual funds</keyword> spread over various market caps, as opposed to a single one. This is evident in the amount garnered by flexi-cap funds, which amassed Rs 3,513.16 crore. All in all, the equity segment saw total inflows of Rs 34,302.82 crores in August, making it the 42nd consecutive month of net inflows in this segment. Even the number of folios in equity jumped 3.16%, up from Rs 13.8 crore in July to Rs 14.3 crore in August. In hybrid funds, balanced advantage funds saw inflows worth Rs 3,215.06 crore, while multi-asset allocation funds received Rs 2,826.89 crore. <h2>Debt inflows take a dip</h2>As for debt categories, they saw inflows worth Rs 45,169.36 crore during the month, higher than their equity counterparts. However, this was significantly lower than the inflows it registered in July, which stood at Rs 1,19,587.60 crore. The biggest contributors to this quantum were <keyword id="428654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquid-funds" source="Orion">liquid funds</keyword> and overnight funds, which received Rs 13,594.87 crore, and Rs 15,105.93 crore respectively. And despite various PSU stocks having a good run on the bourses, banking and PSU funds saw outflows worth Rs 1,549.99 crores, the highest in debt segment. Nehal Meshram, Senior Analyst, Research, Morningstar Investment Research India highlighted that overnight funds, liquid funds and money market funds accounted out 86% of the overall debt inflow last month. "This trend reflects a preference for low-risk and highly liquid investment options. Investors also showed a preference for categories with shorter maturity profiles, such as short term, corporate bond and ultra short duration funds, for temporary parking of funds. Medium duration funds, which had consistently seen outflows, reported marginal inflows in August for the first time in 15 months", she explained. During the month, about 63,93,602 new SIPs were registered.

If you’re not one of those, and want to err on the side of caution, you can choose funds that demonstrated a good run for over 20 years. According to a report by <keyword id="112363" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="value-research" source="Orion">Value Research</keyword>, ten mutual fund schemes have stood the test of time. Funds like Sundaram Midcap Fund, Nippon India Growth Fund, Quant Active Fund and more have given over 16% returns per annum for the last twenty years. “Some investment funds have weathered significant challenges including the 2008 subprime crisis, the 2013 taper tantrum, and the 2020 Covid induced lockdown,” said the Value Research report. It adds that while even very successful funds failed during the times, but a few of these ‘golden oldies’ survived the crises to give positive returns to their investors. The key to identifying such funds, Value Research says, is to track their long-term performance over 5-20 years. An investor who had done a systematic investment plan (SIP) for ₹10,000 for 20 years in any of these funds, would now be sitting on over ₹1.5 crore. If the investors would have increased their SIP amounts by 10% per annum, they would be sitting over ₹2.7 crore. flows into mutual funds. In September, inflows into SIPs hit an all-time high of ₹16,042.06 crore, according to Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). It also said that the cumulative Assets Under Management (AUM) for the mutual fund industry stood at ₹46.58 lakh crore as of September end. But only time, and July 22nd will tell. <h2>Wish 2: Offer similar tax benefits to pension products as NPS </h2>NPS, or <keyword id="475509" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Pension-System" source="Orion">National Pension System</keyword> is a lucrative retirement planning scheme. And it comes with many tax benefits. For instance, if you withdraw up to 60% of your accumulated pension as lumpsum once you turn 60, your withdrawal is tax free. Similarly, if any amount you receive from NPS is reinvested in the annuity plan, it remains tax exempt. However, income from annuities is taxed as per your regular income tax slab. And any early withdrawals that you make (before 60 years) will attract taxes. A standard deduction of Rs 50,000, or amount of annuity income (whichever is lower) can be claimed. But under regular annuities or pension products, senior citizens pay a 10% tax on total taxable income over Rs. 3 lakhs , Rs 20,000 + 20% over amount exceeding Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 1.2 lakh+ 30% on amount exceeding Rs 10 lakh. As Mathur notes, "Pension products like annuity plans should be given the same tax benefits as NPS, since the current taxation does not encourage investment in retirement planning. It’s also necessary to expand Section 80C deductions and add a dedicated category for term insurance because the existing limit of Rs. 1,50,000 is insufficient". Even retirement planner Sanjeev Dawar notes that income from annuities is a primary source of income for retirees. "As such, tax relief is expected since returns, although assured for life, are relatively low. Moreover, they remain fixed and have no sensitivity to inflation". Additionally, Dawar also advocates for special financial considerations for eligible individuals who are compelled to stay in old-age homes in their twilight years. It is also needed that travel concessions, that have been withdrawn, are restarted". <h2>Wish 3: Lowering lock-in periods for elderly </h2>Many schemes like national savings certificate (NSC), unit-linked insurance plans (ULIP) and senior citizen savings scheme (SCSS) are subject to tax deductions, provided they are redeemed after their specific <keyword id="20792448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lock-in-period" source="keywords">lock-in period</keyword>. For instance, tax-saver FDs, ULIPs and NSC have a lock-in period of 5 years, while equity-linked savings scheme (ELSS) have a lock-in period of 3 years. It would help senior citizens if this lock-in period is reduced, so that they have some liquidity and cash handy during medical or other such emergencies. Additionally, withdrawals should be allowed within lock-in period sans hefty penalties, as is the case right now. <h2>Wish 4: Lowering GST on health insurance premiums </h2>Currently, GST on health insurance premium is payable at 18%, which can translate into a hefty levy, especially since senior citizens end up paying significantly higher premiums to get insurance coverage. For a premium of Rs 30,000, the GST could go as high as Rs 5,400. As per Prasun Sikdar, MD &amp; CEO, Manipal Cigna Health Insurance, "lowering the GST burden on the health insurance premiums will be a huge respite for missing middle and senior citizens to get access to quality healthcare they need and help to significantly boost insurance penetration across India by driving affordability.” <h2> Wish 5: Reduce tax on <keyword id="21695681" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="passive-income" source="keywords">passive income</keyword> sources for aged</h2>For most senior citizens, rental income from house, pension and other such passive sources turn into a major income avenue, once they retire from active employment. As such, these should be taxed at a lower slab, and not considered as regular salary. Or else, higher exemption limits should be introduced to allow them to save more. At present, the basic exemption limit for senior citizens between 60-80 years is Rs 3 lakh, while the exemption limit for citizens above 80 years is Rs 5 lakhs. While the new tax regime has rationalised the tax structure, the majority of the deductions allowed by the old tax regime are not available under the new tax regime. However, if you have a home loan, the choice may become simpler. However, the 80C deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh is available for a variety of other investments and payments as well – like public provident fund (PPF), equity-linked savings scheme (ELSS) funds, payment of life insurance premiums and so on. Also, the additional deduction of ₹50,000 on interest payments under section 80EE is available only under certain conditions. This condition is only valid if the loan amount borrowed is not more than ₹35 lakh, the property's value is under ₹50 lakh, and the loan was approved within the period of April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017. Hence, if you do not meet either of the above conditions, the additional deduction of ₹50,000 will not be available to you. A joint home loan can maximise tax benefits. If a couple takes a joint home loan, they can maximise the tax benefits. “For a joint home loan, both borrowers can claim deductions on the home loan interest and principal payments. They can each claim deductions up to ₹2 lakh on the interest (Sec 24), and up to ₹1.5 lakh on the principal (Sec 80C) component of a home loan,” says Shetty. If a married couple has jointly taken a home loan, in which both are the co-borrowers and co-owners of the property they are looking to purchase, and both partners are servicing the loan, then both of them will be eligible to apply for both the aforementioned deductions i.e. ₹2 lakh and ₹1.5 lakh individually. Thus, the total deduction they can avail will be doubled. Another requirement is that the property in question must be completely constructed.
