<ul><li>Indian government will soon direct <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword>, <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> to convert 40% of their fleet to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> by 2026, says a report. </li><li>Ola has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment in India. </li><li>Uber has reportedly been experimenting with electric bikes in India. </li></ul>The Indian government is clearly not taking its Electric Vehicle mission lightly. The government has reportedly ordered ride-hailing giants Uber and Ola to convert 40% of their fleet to electric cars by 2026, according to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-electric-autos-exclusives/exclusive-india-to-order-taxi-aggregators-like-uber-ola-to-go-electric-idUSKCN1T71DU">Reuters report.</a> The report said that for both the companies to achieve this target, they will have to begin the conversion process by next year itself – “would need to start converting their fleet as early as next year to achieve 2.5% electrification by 2021, 5% by 2022, 10% by 2023 before hiking it to 40%,” the report said. Ola might take to this deadline much easily. It has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment. The homegrown unicorn has a company under the name Ola Electric Mobility which develops solutions to make electric mobility viable on a large scale. Ola plans to bring 1 million Electric Vehicles on to the Indian roads by 2021. The company has also been raising funds at a quick pace. So far, it has brought in investors like Ratan Tata and Arun Sarin, along with Tiger Global and Matrix India – all of whom are early investors in the parent company ANI Technologies. Meanwhile, Uber too is <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/09/uber-begins-trialing-e-bikes-and-bicycles-rides-in-india/">reportedly</a> experimenting with electric bicycles and bikes in India. The global giant has partnered with Bengaluru-based bicycle sharing platform Yulu bikes. <ul><li><keyword id="6077461" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Okinawa-Scooters">Okinawa Scooters</keyword> has become the first electric two-wheeler company to get the Fame-II approval and incentivization.</li><li>The <keyword id="143042" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Okinawa">Okinawa</keyword> scooters start at a price range of ₹45,000 and go upto ₹1,46,000. </li><li>With the approval, customers could get subsidies between ₹17,000–₹26,000 based on kwh.</li></ul>India’s polluted air badly needs <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> and a bunch of brands are nearing their launch. The latest one is from the startup Okinawa Scooters, which has become the first electric two-wheeler company to get the Fame-II approval and incentivization. Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &amp;) Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme was announced by the Indian government in 2015 to push forward the production and use of electric vehicles. With their inclusion in the Fame scheme, consumers will get a subsidy in the purchase of Okinawa scooters, depending on the model battery kilowatt hour. The Okinawa scooters start at a price range of ₹45,000 and go upto ₹1,46,000. “For Okinawa Ridge+ &amp; i-Praise the subsidy would be between ₹17,000–₹26,000 based on kwh,” said Jeetender Sharma, Founder &amp; Managing Director, Okinawa Autotech Pvt. Ltd. India has seen growth of many EV startups who are manufacturing bikes in India. Okinawa also faces competition from other Indian startups like Ather Energy. Ather Energy’s bikes start at a price range of ₹1,13,000 and it has raised funding from the likes of Hero Motocorp. Pune-based Tork Motors which was one of the first in India to announce electric motorcycles is set to launch the motorbikes soon with an expected price range of ₹1.5 lakh. Another rising competition in the space comes from Revolt Motors, which has been founded by Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma. Revolt will be launching AI-powered electric bikes in India by June 2019. <a href="https://www.carblogindia.com/revolt-electric-motorcycle-riding-range/">Rumours</a> suggest that the bike, which will be initially launched in Delhi NCR, could be priced between ₹1-1.20 lakh. “With the thought process to provide the consumer with the ‘Make in India’ product we started working initially on localization of our electric two-wheeler components which helped us in getting the FAME-II approval,” said Sharma. The company’s official statement said that their products have met all the government parameters that help in availing subsidy – a speed of around 40 kilometres (km) per hour, a range of about 80 km/charge, sourcing 50% of the inputs from within India and using Lithium-ion battery. <ul><li>In conversation with Business Insider, Rohit Gothi, CEO, <keyword id="167885" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hero-Cycles">Hero Cycles</keyword> said the company is betting big on e-bikes.</li><li>Hero launched <keyword id="3883061" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lectro">Lectro</keyword> – its electric bikes – in a pilot phase last year, it has also come up with an upgraded version Lectro+.</li></ul>India’s electric vehicle revolution is now powered by one of India’s biggest legacy companies – Hero Cycles. Cycles in India are synonymous with the brand Hero Cycles and now, the company has added to its portfolio – e-bikes. Having been in the business since 1956, the company finally made the move to e-bikes and the CEO of Hero Cycles Rohit Gothi believes that e-bikes will grow faster than electric cars or scooters in India. Hero has ambitious goals to have a significant share in the global cycles market. In India, the company had <a href="https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/two-wheelers/scooters-mopeds/hero-cycles-posts-15-y-o-y-sales-growth-in-fy19/66606679">reported </a>a 15% year-on-year growth for FY19, having sold 31 million units. Hero launched Lectro – its electric bikes – in a pilot phase last year, it has also come up with an upgraded version Lectro+. Gothi said that the response has been encouraging and they have also started commercially selling the e-bikes. The multi-speed geared variant of the e-bike has been launched at a price of ₹26,999 while the gearless one will come at ₹18,999. “The best part about e-bikes is that from the cost of maintenance perspective they are fairly cheap, unlike other e-initiatives like car or scooter. They don’t need large scale charging infrastructure so we can really scale up soon,” said Gothi. Reports about Hero Cycles looking to expand its operations to Europe have also been doing the rounds. And Gothi said that it’s not just Europe but their vision is to move to the world. “In order to have a global presence, you need good manufacturing capabilities. We already have a company in Europe called Avocet and we are seriously contemplating various options in the US and UK,” he said. Another growing trend in India are bike rental startups with startups like Mobycy, Cykul (acquired by Dr Reddys). While bike rental has gained popularity, there have also been a few misses. Chinese bike rental startup Ofo which had made an India entry had to withdraw its business from the country. “We have a sister company – Hexi – which is in the public bicycle sharing space. We have 4,000 cycles running on the road and campuses specifically Punjab Agriculture University. We have our hands on everything and anything that is related to micro mobility,” said Gothi. With its recent launch of the Nyx-HX under the "City Speed" variants, Hero Electric's two-wheelers will ensure low running cost, high load carrying capability, intercity range and various other customisable features for its clients. eBikeGO offers smart IoT-powered mobility solutions, founded and led by serial entrepreneur Irfan Khan. Currently, eBikeGO offers electric bikes on subscription in five cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Amritsar, and Jaipur. The electric mobility start-up started with 640 users in 2017 and is now providing mobility solutions in 8 cities to more than 18,000 users. The IoT-powered electric bikes offer pollution-free and low-cost rides with a speed of 55 km/hr with a charge of two hours.
