While a global cross-functional team with local, cultural, and language expertise will run the election integrity work, Twitter said it is taking proactive measures to prevent prohibited political advertising through comprehensive and nuanced enforcement mechanisms. "These include identifying and blocking ads from referenced candidates, parties, and other election-related content," the company said in a statement. Twitter said it will label synthetic and manipulated <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> and link it to a Twitter Moment to give people additional context and surface-related conversations "so they can make more informed decisions on the content they want to engage with or amplify". When people attempt to retweet <keyword id="6406419" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tweets">tweets</keyword> with a synthetic and manipulated media label, they will see a prompt pointing them to credible information. "These Tweets won't be algorithmically recommended by Twitter, which further reduces the visibility of misleading information," the company announced. Twitter will also launch an events page dedicated to the <keyword id="6372146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="assembly-elections">assembly elections</keyword> on voting days and for the election results day. The page will include a timeline of Tweets from credible accounts to provide the latest information on the days of voting and election results. Twitter gears up for assembly elections in India — announces measures to 'prevent prohibited political advertising'

<ul><li>Global stock markets, including India, have witnessed a bout of volatility in the run-up to US elections. Most analysts believe that short-term volatility is likely to remain, irrespective of the verdict, but a Biden victory may be favourable for India in the long run.</li><li>Abhimanyu Sofat, head of research at IIFL Securities, believes that Trump’s victory will simply lead to the continuation of the current stalemate in global trade.</li><li>Biden’s win may play out well for the IT sector compared to Trump, analysts at Angel Broking believe. </li></ul>Stock markets around the globe saw the worst October this year, given the resurgence of COVID cases worldwide. But one other reason for the caution was the US Presidential elections. Indian stock-market index, Sensex, has shed over 222 points in the past one week, and if we eliminate today’s trading gains, the loss goes above 772 points in a week. The race to the White House is a keenly tracked global event. While it may be challenging to anticipate the outcome this time around, the impact on Indian markets is likely to be positive, according to UBS. They believe that if Biden comes to power by winning both houses of Congress, India will benefit from “potentially more favourable US trade policies.” Why is the US Presidential election important for India? Analysts believe that this time around, there is likely to be some delay around the verdict of US elections. Also, the possibility of it being contested in the Supreme Court will lead to volatility in the markets. “The US election is important for India not only economically but also strategically,” said Binod Modi, head of the strategy, Reliance Securities. Joseph Thomas, head of research at Emkay Wealth Management, said the markets in India might see heightened volatility in the run-up to the elections and immediately after that. “This volatility is the result of a perception that there could be drastic changes in the US policy depending upon who is going to win.” Jyoti Roy, equity strategist, Angel Broking, explained that a favourable outcome of the US elections results would result in a risk-on environment leading to strong foreign portfolio investment flows for India. Whereas, an adverse outcome of the US elections, on the other hand, will result in a global risk-off environment, which will lead to foreign institutional investors pulling out money from India and put pressure on the markets. How Biden’s victory may play out for India equities? The sectors which may continue to benefit as far as India is concerned is technology, pharma and healthcare, insurance and the consumer sector. According to Modi from Reliance Securities, no matter the outcome of US elections, the relations with India would continue to remain good given recent geopolitical developments. However, the democratic party’s win in the election can result in higher fiscal stimulus and favourable immigration policies, which bodes well for emerging market equities, including India. Angel Broking’s Roy also said Biden’s victory would also be extremely positive for the IT sector as the restrictions placed on H1B visas by the Trump administration are likely to be reversed. And, “In such a scenario, we would also recommend HCL Technologies and Persistent systems as our top picks from the IT space in case of a Joe Biden victory.” Whereas Amit Jain, Chief Strategist - Global Asset Class, Ashika Group, said “If Biden wins then you may see the World be back to Pre-Trump era, where you will see much better trade relations within the World Economies. This may benefit all the sectors, as we may see much better harmony and trade relationships within the world economies.” What if Trump wins? Abhimanyu Sofat, head of research at IIFL Securities, believes that Trump’s victory will simply lead to the continuation of the current stalemate in global trade. Hence, nothing major is expected pertaining to any specific sector. However, Angel Broking said, “Trump’s victory will be positive for cyclical sectors like Auto, Banking and small-ticket consumer durables.” In the Auto sector, they prefer two-wheeler stocks with Hero Motocorp and Endurance Technologies as their top picks. Cholamandalam Investments and IDFC First Bank are the top picks in the BFSI space, while Hawkins Cooker is the top pick consumer durable space, Roy added. While the former promises to pass a law to protect the personal data of all persons and uphold the right to privacy, the latter takes on Section 69 — the issue of mass surveillance. This year’s manifesto bears a little thin on technological aspects aside from what’s already in play. It promises to connect all the Gram Panchayats — a type of self-governing village council — in the country using high speed optical fibre network by 2022. But, The BharatNet program has already <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/1-10-lakh-gram-panchayats-given-optical-fibre-connectivity-government/articleshow/62833908.cms">connected</a> 110,000 Gram Panchayats in the country and is already geared towards bringing all the villages under its umbrella. The BJP also reiterated their commitment to push for digital payments and extend banking services to within 5 km for every individual. That doesn’t necessarily mean opening bank branches at every 5km but then again, digital interfaces for customers to interact with banking correspondents are already in place. The manifesto also restated the government’s take on Operation Digital Board which already launched in February and promises to bring e-resources and digital board to secondary schools as well as higher education institutions. They also promise to continue with the current incentives to expand the use of digital transactions in the country and build on the already stocked ‘National Digital Library of India’ which provides e-books and journal papers to students for free. The party also promises to build on the ongoing process of digitising governance process end-to-end including the digital delivery of government services. While the BJP has been very keen on making the country more digitally connected it’s stance on data privacy and protection has been discomforting for many. This government now has a process in place that skims through people’s vacation photos on social media and matches that with the respective tax data to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-tax-tracker-uses-big-data-to-track-tax-evasion/articleshow/68578501.cms">check for evasion</a>. This manifesto does little to ease the fear of an overarching big brother who may be looking over your shoulder all the time. Narendra Modi’s manifesto keeps the fear over data privacy and protection alive

<ul><li>Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are already being called before the Indian government ahead of general elections in the country. </li><li>But they may be in more hot water with a local think tank sending a letter to the Indian government to look into Facebook — and other tech companies — lobbying efforts.</li><li>This development comes after the Guardian revealed documents exposing Facebook’s “global lobbying operation.”</li></ul>Not only are social networking companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/facebook-twitter-questioned-by-indian-government-ahead-of-elections-2019/articleshow/68183865.cms">being questioned</a> by the Indian Parliamentary Committee to safeguard against the upcoming general elections in the country but it appears they may face pressure to be brought under the regulatory lens for lobbying as well. The Center for Accountability and Systemic Change (CASC) has <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/think-tank-asks-panel-to-probe-facebook-s-lobbying-practices-in-india-119030400982_1.html">filed a letter</a> with the Indian Parliament’s standing committee to look into the influence that social media networks have on the government. The letter signed by the former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue, KN Govindacharya, and CASC’s advocate states that a social media company’s financial statements may be called into question to estimate its turnover from India operations.”as well as the amount spent on lobbying to delay the data protection law”. This comes after The Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/mar/02/facebook-global-lobbying-campaign-against-data-privacy-laws-investment">revealed a report</a> about Facebook’s “secretive global lobbying operation” on Saturday — citing a list of countries that included India. Social networking companies versus India Facebook, Twitter Instagram and Whatsapp are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/google-facebook-twitter-reveal-political-ad-spending-ahead-of-the-lok-sabha-2019-polls/articleshow/67651472.cms">already</a> under the Indian government’s scanner for deterring foreign influence or political bias on their platforms. Twitter was recently called into question for being biased against right wing Twitterati. Facebook’s track record is already in question due to the Cambridge Analytica <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/exclusive-eu-warns-that-facebooks-cambridge-analytica-crisis-is-the-tip-of-an-iceberg-of-data-scandals/articleshow/64270966.cms">scandal</a> and the role it played in the 2016 US Presidential election. Whatsapp, bought out by Facebook in 2014, is still <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-india-needs-from-whatsapp-might-not-be-so-easily-attainable/articleshow/65497255.cms">battling it out </a>over end-to-end encryption with the Indian government after forwarded messages — accused of spreading misinformation — caused a series of lynchings in the country. Instagram, also owned by Facebook, has managed to stay out of mainstream trouble so far but there have been <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/on-instagram-in-india-its-sex-for-sale/articleshow/67968645.cms">reports</a> of the platform turning into a safe haven for sexual solicitation. That may not be political influence or foreign manipulation, but it does call the social networking site’s screening into questions. The letter by the CASC questioned data localisation laws have not been implemented despite the numerous examples of data breaches. While Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, didn’t show up for the Parliamentary meeting in front of the Indian government — he did sent Colin Crowell, Twitter’s Vice President and Global Policy Head. After the meeting, the company was issued a 10-day deadline to respond to the panel’s questions. Facebook is scheduled to appear before the same committee tomorrow but Mark Zuckerberg, the company CEO or Sheryl Sandberg, its COO will be able to make it to India. Instead, Joel Kaplan, Vice President and Head of Global Public Policy at Facebook, will be present at the meeting instead. Concerns have heightened since one of the memos disclosed by The Guardian exposed how Facebook encouraged Enda Kenny, the former Irish Prime Minister, to use his influence on the Data Protection Directive during Ireland’s presidency of the European Union — as it was a “threat to jobs, innovation and economic growth in Europe.” The Indian government hasn’t issued a response yet but it appears social networking sites may face pressure to be brought under the regulatory lens for lobbying as well. From the densest jungles to sweltering deserts, to the world’s highest polling station, it isn’t unusual for election officers to endure the harshest journeys. The most recent election came at the cost of having six election commission officers travel 300 miles in the remotest jungle terrains to set up a polling booth for a lone voter in the village of Malogam, Arunachal Pradesh.  Sokela Tayang, the lone inhabitant and the only registered voter of Malogam, Arunachal Pradesh, has become a benchmark to every 900 million eligible voters in India who have the right to vote. During the first phase of Lok Sabha Election 2019, Malogam village in Arunachal Pradesh witnessed 100% voter turnout at 9.30am. Tayang, turned up in the thin shed like polling station to cast his vote for both the general and the assembly election. The process of <keyword id="43546" type="EVENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Voting">voting</keyword> may not have taken long but it was a difficult task to set up a polling station in a remote place surrounded but jungle and mountains treks. The Malogam village has only one household with five residents including Tayang, according to 2011 Census. The 300-mile journey to Malogam Normally, the Election Commission of India assigns random locations to its employees to set up the polling booth. However to set up a polling booth the district, the election officer formed a team of five members who could travel and trek to the hills to set up a polling booth for Tayang. Tayang was informed about the voting schedule ahead of the polling dates. Even on the polling day it took the team a whole day to inform the assistant returning officer of Hawai and Hayuliang circle about Tayang’s presence on the voting day because of bad reception in the area. The election commission had to set up polling stations at several other remote places. The EC even reached out world’s highest polling station at 15,256 feet in Tashigang village of Himachal Pradesh to approach 49 registered voters.

<ul><li>The Supreme court in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> has issued directives to political parties and candidates to give ‘wide publicity’ to any and all ongoing criminal allegations against them. </li><li>The court has also asked the parliament to bring in laws that allows for the removal of political leaders that are accused of committing ‘heinous and grievous’ crimes. </li><li>Earlier this year the central government had informed the supreme court that there were currently 3,045 pending cases against MPs and MLAs.</li></ul>India is in a precarious political situation where more than <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/36-of-mps-mlas-facing-trial-in-3045-criminal-cases/articleshow/63261553.cms">one-third</a> of its members of parliament (MPs) and members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) are currently facing trial, according to the <keyword id="2954047" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="NN-Vohra-Committee">NN Vohra Committee</keyword>. The <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/cant-bar-politicians-with-criminal-charges-from-contesting-elections-parliament-should-frame-laws-sc/article25035435.ece">supreme court has instructed</a> candidates and political parties to disclose any and all pending criminal cases pending against them to the Election Commission (EC) at the time of nomination. And, the five-judge constitution bench of the supreme court held that political parties are obligated to publish the information about their respective websites so that voters can make an informed decision when they’re choose the candidate to vote for. That being said, the supreme court also added that only candidates who have been convicted will be disqualified from participating in the elections, not ones who have only been accused. Ironically. But for those who have been accused of ‘heinous and grievous’ crimes, the supreme court has urged the parliament to form laws that would enable the removal of such political leaders. Leaving no stone unturned To ensure that political parties and candidates can’t exploit any loophole of the directive, the supreme court has specifically detailed that the submissions to the EC have to be in ‘block letters’. And, in addition to making the information available online, the supreme court has also said that the political party has to give ‘wide publicity’ to these facts through declarations in the newspapers as well as over electronic media. After nomination papers have been filed, candidates have to publicise their respective criminal records on television, not once, but thrice. Criminalisation of politics at entry-level The study <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/criminalisation-of-politics-felt-in-strongest-form-in-1993-mumbai-serial-blasts-supreme-court/articleshow/65949574.cms">conducted</a> by NN Vohra committee found that India’s intelligence agencies such as RAW, CBI and IB unanimously agreed that there was a criminal network running parallel to the government of India. And, with the EC having limited powers, there’s nothing it can do about candidates entering the political race when they’ve only been accused of a crime, but are yet to be convicted. On average, in the 10 years following 2004, the <keyword id="6368295" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="law-commission">Law Commission</keyword> of India <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/national/1-every-14-lawmaker-had-694524.html">reported</a> that 18% of the candidates in state and national elections have had pending criminal cases against them. Even back in 1990, the Goswami Committee on Electoral Reforms pointed out how money and muscle power were crippling the Indian electoral system. Ahead of the 2019 general elections, this may require parties to switch up their strategies since 1,765 MPs and MLAs of 4,896 are currently facing a criminal trial or the other. There are over 3,045 pending cases of crimes against women according to the an analysis done by the central government in collaboration with the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Supreme court pushes for strong laws to decriminalise politics in India

And, in the light of the general elections drawing closer next year, the Election Commission of India has taken the initiative to <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/how-india-plans-to-curb-hate-speech-ahead-of-the-world-s-biggest-election-118081300038_1.html">establish a panel </a>that will analyse the interaction of social media and news. As per reports, the panel is going to examine the role of social media platforms like <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword>, <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> and YouTube and recommend ways to deal with violations. Around the world, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines are also mulling over their options to counter fake news. Germany, on the other hand, has already passed a legislation that requires social media networks to remove hate speech from their platforms. A worrying trend In recent months, India has borne witness to a rise in religious and ethnic sentiment. In 2018 alone, there have been at least 24 people killed in the name of public justice where the accusations have been based on fake news of child kidnapping and cow smuggling. While some blame the lack of regulations over social media, the opposition party, along with the Supreme Court in India, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/lynching-due-to-rising-intolerance-supreme-court/articleshow/65032756.cms">blames</a> PM Modi and the ruling faction for the disturbing pattern of rising intolerance. Modi, on the other hand, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/politics-on-lynchings-shows-perverse-mindset-says-pm-modi-on-opposition-criticism/story-b21x2hwxtOzYMVK55VvZcP.html">retaliated</a> by stating that reducing such cases to ‘mere statistics’ for the sake of politics shows a perverse mindset in a situation where there should be unity. In a prior attempt to curb fake news, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry issued a press release that stated that the accreditation of a journalist could be annulled if the person is found propagating or generating fake news in any way. But, that was scrapped within 24 hours. Rather than be about reducing fake news, the measure drew criticism that it was just another way to muzzle the Indian media. Because, if a piece of news is even ‘suspected’ to be fake, the journalist would be suspended for upto 15 days while the Press Council of India analyses the case. It’s also important to recognise that fake news is not an ‘India’ problem but a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/intolerance-fake-news-not-just-medias-concern-its-a-global-problem/articleshow/60503565.cms">global</a> phenomenon. The ease and speed with which information can travel nowadays makes it easier for negative elements to take advantage of the system. With the elections coming up, it’s <a href="https://www.ucanews.com/news/fears-of-violence-loom-large-ahead-of-indian-election/82519">speculated</a> that intolerance may take a turn for the worse depending on whether the election is fought on the back of the Hindu nationhood ideology of Hindutva or economic growth and development.

In a post on X, Pei tagged Musk and suggested him to change his username to 'Elon Bhai' in order to build a Tesla factory in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>. "@elonmusk did you really think you could build a Tesla factory in India without changing your username to Elon Bhai?," Pei wrote. Pei also changed his name to 'Carl Bhai' on X. Since being shared, the post has been viewed over 800K times and has received over 12K likes. Responding to Pie's tweet, a user commented, "Elon bro is so popular in India, if he contests elections from India his win is sure shot guaranteed". "It's time to become Elon Bhai @elonmusk," another user wrote. One more user said, "You are the Bhai, he will be the <keyword id="20642124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mamu" source="keywords">Mamu</keyword>". The company also added 'Bhai' to their other accounts on X. The company changed Nothing India to 'Nothing India Bhai' and CMF by Nothing to 'CMF Bhai Nothing'. Nothing is set to launch its Phone (2a) in India next month.
