This combination is expected to help people lose significantly more weight than semaglutide alone, Novo Nordisk says.How it works: Cagrilintide mimics the effects of a naturally-occurring hormone to regulate appetite and digestion and lower blood sugar. CagriSema adds it to the already-popular drug semaglutide, which itself helps manage hunger and blood sugar levels.Novo's chief financial officer said in an earnings call that it would source cagrilintide from a third-party company, which could help with manufacturing. The ban was officially announced through a gazette notification issued by the <keyword id="19897332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Health-Ministry" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Union Health Ministry" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Union Health Ministry">Union Health Ministry</keyword> on August 12. <keyword id="22891947" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FDC-drugs" source="keywords">FDC drugs</keyword>, often referred to as "cocktail" drugs, contain a combination of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients in a fixed ratio. The apex panel Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) also reviewed the combinations and concluded that there was "no therapeutic justification" for the ingredients in these FDCs. In light of the potential risks, the government deemed it necessary to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and distribution of these drugs under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The notification emphasised that "in the larger public interest, it is necessary to prohibit the manufacture, sale, or distribution of this FDC" as regulation or restriction would not be sufficient to protect patients. This is not the first time the Indian government has intervened to address the sale of FDCs. In 2016, the Centre had announced a ban on 344 FDCs after an expert panel — established at the direction of the Supreme Court — found that many of these combinations were being sold without sufficient scientific evidence supporting their efficacy. Although that decision was contested in court by <keyword id="22603498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drug-manufacturers" source="keywords">drug manufacturers</keyword>, it set a precedent for regulatory scrutiny of FDCs in India. In June 2023, 14 FDCs from the original list of 344 were also banned. Many of the drugs included in the recent list of 156 were part of this original 344-drug combination ban, reinforcing the government's continued efforts to remove unsafe and unjustified medications from the market. 156 ‘combination medicines’ containing Cetirizine, Paracetamol and other common drugs banned by Centre

The central government has prohibited as many as 156 <keyword id="22893276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="combination-drugs" source="keywords">combination drugs</keyword> that are often administered as painkillers, multivitamins, and antibiotics, for fever and cold, among others. In a gazette notification dated August 21, the government said that the use of the drug Fixed Dose Combination of Amylase, Protease, Glucoamylase, Pectinase, Alpha Galactosidase, Lactase, Beta-Gluconase, Cellulase, Lipase, Bromelain, Xylanase, Hemicellulase, Malt diastase, Invertase, Papain is likely to involve risk to human beings whereas safer alternatives to the said drug are available. Upon recommendations of the <keyword id="20092000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Technical-Advisory-Board" source="keywords">Drugs Technical Advisory Board</keyword>, the central government, in the greater interest of the public, has prohibited the manufacture for sale, sale, and distribution for human use of those drugs across the country with immediate effect. The move from the government comes after the matter was examined by an expert committee appointed by the central government, and the said expert committee considered the administration of this Fixed Dose Combination as "irrational". The Drugs Technical Advisory Board also examined the said FDC and recommended that "there is no therapeutic justification for the ingredients contained in this FDC. The FDC may involve risk to human beings. Hence in the larger public interest, it is necessary to prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of this FDC under section 26 A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. In view of above, any kind of regulation or restriction to allow for any use in patients is not justifiable," the notification read. The list of banned drugs also includes drugs used for hair treatments, antiparasitic, skincare, anti-allergic. The medicines combined in more than one drug in a single pill are Fixed dose combination drugs FDC, these drugs are also known as cocktail drugs. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance supports the decision of the government. Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General, IPA told that, "this has been going for many years and there was a committee which reviewed the whole thing... This is a right step in the interest of patients and all aspects have been taken into consideration." "They have given the opportunity to give the data to support their products, so the right products will continue and when there is no data to support then companies have to withdraw it," Jain added. India bans 156 commonly used combination drugs citing possible risks to humans

A similar version of this drug, called Mounjaro, has been available to people with type 2 diabetes since 2022.But when the trial ended, she was faced with the prospect of paying over $1,000 per month to continue this drug, or try to keep the weight off unmedicated — an incredibly tricky feat since the drug's effects are not long-lasting, as far as we know.Now, after three years of navigating a nightmarish maze of shortages and lack of insurance coverage, she finally has steady, affordable access to her medication.She's not only one.The high price of weight-loss medication has left out millions of Americans who could benefit, as highlighted in recent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/novo-nordisk-ceo-faces-senate-questions-over-high-prices-of-ozempic-and-wegovy-in-us-1033798280">Senate Committee Hearings</a>, where Novo Nordisk's CEO faced tough questions about its versions of similar drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy.Here's how she, like many others, has found a way around the snarls of the healthcare system to stay on the drug.<h2 id="b6ae44a3-53cb-4a2c-8ff1-f68263c11f64">At first, she tried the pharma solution: coupons</h2>After the trial ended, Rothenhoefer's doctor issued her a prescription for Mounjaro but she knew she couldn't afford it with her office job.Not a problem, manufacturer Eli Lilly told her — she could get a coupon, allowing her to access the drug at a steep discount.Providing coupons is a common practice for drug makers to incentivize patients to try their product, instead of a competitor's, especially when it's a new offering in an already-hot and high-priced market.However, the coupon expired in June 2023. And all she could do was ration out her remaining doses and hope for the best."My insurance doesn't cover it. Most people can't afford it. I had no choice," she said.<h2 id="9f175e6c-deef-4bd9-8285-ccf7d1bc03be">Spreading out doses to try to make the drug last longer</h2>Rothenhoefer did what she could to make her supply of medication last, and tried to dose every 10 to 14 days instead of weekly, but the scale began creeping back up regardless of what she did."I was having a lot of fluctuations in weight even though my habits were the same," she said.Research suggests that people who lose weight on GLP-1 medications need to continue taking them or they'll <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zepbound-weight-gain-stop-taking-tirzepatide-2023-12">regain the weight</a> so Rothenhoefer needed a long-term plan just to keep her weight stable."I'm in maintenance, which I'll be in for the rest of my life," she said.But she's since been able to find a steady, affordable supply, and now takes a dose of 7.5 - 10 mg of compounded tirzepatide weekly, delivered to her door, and plans to stay this course for at least the next year, if not longer.<h2 id="86a425c0-21ca-447d-a94f-5bc79360d4e5">The promise of cheaper 'compounded drugs'</h2>Rothenhoefer said she had heard about a cheaper version of the GLP-1s known as compounded tirzepatide.The active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound is tirzepatide, one type of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weight-loss-glp-1-drugs-ozempic-wegovy-mounjaro-effects-future-2023-12">GLP-1 drugs</a>, which mimic hormones that our bodies naturally produce to control appetite and blood sugar. (Ozempic and Wegovy contain a similar drug called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-weight-loss-meds-injections-compare-costs-results-side-effects">semaglutide</a>.)<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buy-compounded-semaglutide-online-risks-wegovy-ozempic-2023-1">Compounded medications</a> are custom formulations of drugs provide by specialized pharmacies. Since brand name GLP-1 drugs have long been in shortage, drug compounders are legally allowed to fill the gap in demand with their own versions of the same active ingredients, semaglutide or tirzepatide.While regulated, these compounded drugs aren't FDA-approved, raising concerns from doctors about variations in quality.The grey market of weight-loss drugs is vast and complicated.Some weight-loss clinics or med spas offer injections for as little as $20, with way of vetting what you're getting, and some online clinics are simply money scams, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scientist-cheaper-ozempic-sold-online-contains-dangerous-ingredients-2024-8">recent study found</a>.Rothenhoefer contacted a telehealth company with a verified, credentialed compounding pharmacy.The price for her dose of the compounded version is $329 monthly, compared to the brand name's list price of more than $1,000 per month.Pharmaceutical companies are pushing back against their low-cost competitors in the GLP-1 market.In August, Eli Lilly halved the price of its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eli-lilly-cut-price-zepbound-tirzepatide-weight-loss-drug-copycats-2024-8">weight-loss drug Zepbound </a>through single-dose vials — a bid to lure customers back to brand-name drugs, analysts said.But Rothenhoefer said that if manufacturers want people to buy their products, prices need to keep dropping."I think everyone would be on the branded if it were accessible and affordable. But there are people out there that are alive now that might not have been or might have been in five years if they didn't get their health under control," she said of patients like her who are now using compounded medications.<h2 id="bc1e401f-b010-4062-a1c7-ffc442cacc15">A huge relief</h2>Previously, Rothenhoefer said she was constantly worried about protecting the dwindling stockpile of medication in her refrigerator.Now, with reliable access, a huge burden has been lifted, Rothenhoefer said. She is no longer fixated on rushing to get ice in a cooler for her meds as a first priority, and is free to think about everything else that matters."I don't have any fear at all anymore," she said. "My mind has been totally put at ease and I can now focus on the rest of my life."

It has been edited for length and clarity.I wasn't present for my son, Joel, when he was growing up. He'd ask me if I wanted to go to the park. "No, let's stay home and watch TV," I'd always say. I'd sit in the chair with a beer in my hand — and keep going all afternoon, progressing to hard liquor like whisky. I'd often black out.I've been sober since 2021, thanks to a medicine that made my alcohol craving disappear, and I get to be present as a grandfather in a way I never was as a dad. <h2 id="d67e68fd-e0a3-49c6-a885-f014d13d8011">Alcohol has been a problem since I was a tween</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/signs-of-alcoholism">Alcohol was a problem </a>for me from the age of 12. When I was in fifth grade, I felt like I didn't fit in. But I eventually found my group in the kids who hung out at the back of the school and smoked cigarettes.It wasn't long before I had my first taste of beer. Then it was whiskey, vodka, and gin — anything we could get our hands on as young teens. We'd stand outside the liquor store and ask an adult to buy bottles for us. Or the store owners would just sell it to us.In high school, I'd drink at parties and friends' houses. My parents found out and would ground me. But I'd find a way to drink in secret in my room.At 18, they told me to either get out of the house or go to rehab. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drew-barrymore-teen-drug-rehab-center-mothers-day-2023-5">They paid for a rehab center</a> in Florida. I had one relapse but stayed sober for over four years.<h2 id="135ac0e4-f076-4b38-91d2-83c663dbdf6a">I was an obnoxious person</h2>Then, in the mid-90s, one of my friends died from a heart attack. He was in his 20s. I went to his funeral and met up with my old friends that I used to drink with. I couldn't resist the temptation and fell back into bad habits.I married my wife, Suzanna, in 2002. She meant everything to me. But on our <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-go-on-honeymoon-before-getting-engaged-2024-1">honeymoon in Jamaica</a>, I got completely blitzed. I had to be carried off to my room. She was embarrassed.I caused a lot of scenes. We'd go to parties where I'd get drunk, flirt with other women, and say inappropriate things. I was an obnoxious, horrible husband who'd yell at Suzanna and then blackout. The next morning, I couldn't remember a thing.Things got progressively worse. I started drinking during my workday. The pandemic meant I was working from home, which made it harder. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-own-alcohol-at-home-cocktail-recipes">I brewed my own beer</a> in the basement, where I'd hang out on my own.In early 2021, our marriage was so rocky that we decided to get divorced. We each spent $10,000 on lawyers, but somehow, Suzanna, now 51, forgave me. I'd worked there for 30 years, and they care about me. I asked if I could take a monthlong leave to go to rehab. They told me to get better and come back when I was ready. So, I detoxed at a 30-day residential program at Mount Sinai Wellness Center in Dahlonega, Georgia. I had group sessions and individual counseling. I picked up the tools to stay sober.<h2 id="045f0686-5bd3-4e35-ae7f-80ae21e2ca07">I no longer crave alcohol</h2>Still, I knew I needed ongoing support. They explained how it affects the opioid pathways to the brain, so you don't get that "buzz" from drinking.It made me not want to drink at all. It lost its appeal because it didn't have the same effect on me. I told Suzanna to get rid of my distilling equipment in the basement.I have monthly intramuscular shots at a local pharmacy. They inject the extended-release drug between my buttocks and hips.The benefits have changed my life. I have no inclination to drink, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-calorie-counting-helped-me-improve-my-relationship-with-food-2019-9">the calories I've saved </a>have helped me lose 70 pounds. PresVu eye drops: Why has a pharma company fallen in controversy for claiming to cure near-sightedness?

There is currently no approved mpox vaccine in China. Globally, a few vaccines have been approved in the United States, Canada, the European Union, Japan and Russia. In China, a vaccine candidate typically goes through three phases of clinical trials before gaining market approval. The process can take years, even decades. However, the National Medical Products Administration, China's top drug regulator, has launched a number of accelerated or streamlined channels to facilitate applications of novel drugs and vaccines or those in urgent need, state-run China Daily reported on Tuesday. According to the company, the new vaccine is a replication-deficient vaccine based on a strain called MVA. He previously served as boss from 2019.The firm's shares slid 5.6% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange following the announcement."Upon receiving an allegation that Mr. Stefan Kaufmann had purchased illegal drugs, Olympus, in consultation with outside legal counsel, immediately investigated the facts, made a report to the investigative authorities, and cooperated fully with their investigation," the company said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.olympus-global.com/ir/data/announcement/2024/contents/ir00031.pdf">statement</a>.It said that based on the results, Kaufmann had likely acted inconsistently with Olympus' global code of conduct, core values, and corporate culture.As a result, he was asked to offer his resignation and accepted the request, which is effective immediately, the firm added.Kaufmann worked at Olympus for over 20 years, becoming CEO in April 2023. He has been a board member since 2019.No further information has been made public about what type of drug Kaufmann is alleged to have purchased. He has not been charged with any crime.
