The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for <keyword id="19899038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drones" source="keywords">drones</keyword> and drone components is a kickstarter for the sector to progress and should not be considered as a permanent subsidy scheme by the government, according to Union Minister <keyword id="19895367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Piyush-Goyal" source="keywords">Piyush Goyal</keyword>.<br /><br />"The <keyword id="19981334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLI-scheme" source="keywords">PLI scheme</keyword> is not an end to itself, infect the purpose of the PLI is to kickstart the industry. This is not a permanent subsidy. Praising the development of technology and growth in the drone industry on the strength of innovation, he asserted that the development of the drone ecosystem and deploying them in villages across the nation aligns with the PM's 'NAMO Drone Didi' initiative that will help empower the women in the agriculture sector.<br /><br />"In the third term of the PM's administration we will work at triple the speed, ensure three times the result and hope to become the third largest economy in the world", said the Union Minister.<br /><br />He further stated that drones have the ability to contribute to the cooperative sector, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and to Farmers Producer Organisation (FPOs) as a shared facility with the help of agri-infra funds in delivering fertilisers and reducing wastage and expenses of the farmers.<br /><br />The Union Minister said that for financing and mentoring of the drone ecosystem, (Small Industries Development Bank of India) SIDBI can be roped in to promote the sector.<br /><br />On the startup ecosystem, the Minister said that 18 Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) have already been offered in the first half of 2024 and 17 IPOs were offered in 2023. Goyal added that under the guidance of <keyword id="19899320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM-Modi" source="keywords">PM Modi</keyword>, the country has seen windfall investments from foreign investors and there has been a massive push for infrastructure. He further stated that easing of regulations and compliance burden on startups along with enabling Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) have been the primary focus of PM Modi's government.<br /><br />The minister also added that infrastructure growth has a multiplier effect on the economy that leads to demand for goods and services and increases consumption in the country. Production Linked Incentive scheme for drones to kickstart industry, not permanent subsidy: Piyush Goyal

The government has approved the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for <keyword id="94769" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drones" source="Orion">drones</keyword> and drone components for implementation during the current year (2022-23) till 2024-25 with an outlay of Rs 120 crore.<br /><br />Based on the consultations/meetings with the stakeholders, including the industry representatives and the concerned departments, the operational guidelines of the PLI scheme for drones and drone components have been finalised.<br /><br />A statement from the <keyword id="149609" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ministry-of-civil-aviation" source="Orion">ministry of civil aviation</keyword> (MoCA) said that the objective behind this scheme is to incentivise the manufacturing of drones so as to make them self-sustaining and globally competitive.<br /><br />The statement said in order to make the country a global hub for the research and development, testing, manufacturing and operation of drones under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the liberalised <keyword id="2730972" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-rules" source="Orion">Drone Rules</keyword>, 2021, was released to create a growth-oriented regulatory framework for drones. To facilitate further growth, the government said it approved the PLI scheme for drones and drone components in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>.<br /><br />Some of the operational guidelines which were notified for the stakeholders and the public were based on the definitions of the companies; eligibility; application and online portal; project management agency (PMA), empowered group of secretaries (EGoS) and the Competent Authority; approval under PLI and determination of baseline and calculation and disbursement of incentives.<br /><br />These applicants for the scheme are the companies registered in India that are manufacturing -- drones and drone components. The manufacturing can be carried out at one or more locations in India.<br /><br />According to the statement, the target segment covers drones and drone components. Drone components include airframe, propulsion systems (engine and electric), power systems, batteries and associated components, launch and recovery systems, communication systems, cameras, sensors, detect-and-avoid system, and software for drone and drone components, among others.<br /><br />In terms of applications, the statement said it should be with supporting documents and an application fee. Application acknowledgement date is the date on which it is acknowledged by the ministry after carrying out initial scrutiny. The application approval date is the date on which, based on an application, approval under the scheme is issued by the PMA.<br /><br />According to the guidelines, the scheme will be implemented through a nodal agency. Such nodal agency shall act as a PMA and will be responsible for providing secretarial, managerial and implementation support and carrying out responsibilities as assigned by the ministry from time to time.<br /><br />The PMA would be responsible for the appraisal of applications and verification of eligibility, examination of claims, a compilation of data, regarding the progress and performance of the scheme and to keep a check on any diversions arising out of any change in accounting policy or duplication of benefits on account of the same activity under different PLI schemes.<br /><br />The scheme shall have a provision for audit by an external auditor (chartered accountant or cost accountant).<br /><br />The EGoS will conduct periodic reviews of eligible companies with respect to their investments, employment generation, production and value addition under the scheme. It may revise incentivise rates, ceilings, and eligibility criteria as deemed appropriate during the scheme's tenure.<br /><br />The statement from the ministry said claim for disbursement of incentive shall be filed on an annual basis by the applicant within 12 months from the end of the financial year for the claims pertaining to FY22 (2021-22) and within six months from the end of the financial year to which the claim pertains for remaining tenure of the scheme.<br /><br />Applicants will be required to submit claims for disbursement of incentives to the PMA for claiming incentives under the scheme. Applicants must ensure that the claims are complete in all respects and accompanied by all the documents required as per the format prescribed.<br /><br />PMA will have to examine the disbursement claims as submitted by an applicant.<br /><br />The statement also said the PMA shall process claims for the disbursement of incentives and make appropriate recommendations to the Competent Authority. It also said the disbursement of incentives may be in the form of Direct Bank Transfer or through any other mechanism of adjustment in the name of the applicant only.<br /><br />In case of excess claims disbursed, the applicant shall reimburse MoCA for any incentive amount refundable along with interest calculated at three years.<br /><br />The PMA will submit budgetary requirements to MoCA as a consolidated amount on a quarterly basis. The statement also said that all approved applicants shall be required to furnish self-certified quarterly review reports within 30 days from the end of each quarter. Govt approves PLI scheme for making drones with outlay of Rs 120 cr, comes out with norms

Adani's joint venture company with Israeli firm Elbit as well as IdeaForge Technology are among the 14 drone companies that have been selected as beneficiaries of the production-linked incentive (<keyword id="53367" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="pli" source="Orion">PLI</keyword>) scheme to boost <keyword id="12100363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-manufacturing" source="Orion">drone manufacturing</keyword> in India, the aviation ministry said on Wednesday.<br /><br />Under the <keyword id="8941225" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pli-scheme" source="Orion">PLI scheme</keyword> that was announced last year, the incentive for a manufacturer of drones and drone components will be 20 per cent of the “value addition” made by the company during the next three years.<br /><br />The value addition is calculated as the annual sales revenue from drones and drone components (net of GST) minus the purchase cost (net of GST) of drone and drone components.<br /><br />On Wednesday, the ministry released the names of 14 drone companies selected as beneficiaries of the PLI scheme.<br /><br />Dhaksha Unmanned Systems, IdeaForge Technology, IoTechWorld Aviation, Omnipresent Robot Technologies and Raphe Mphibr are five drone manufacturers selected as beneficiaries, it mentioned.<br /><br />Absolute Composites, Adani-Elbit Advanced Systems India, Adroitec Information Systems, Alpha Design Technologies, Inventgrid India, Paras Aerospace, SASMOS HET Technologies, ZMotion Autonomous Systems and Zuppa Geo Navigation Technologies are nine drone component manufacturers selected for the PLI scheme, it noted.<br /><br />The Ministry of Civil Aviation had on March 10 invited applications from the drone industry for the PLI scheme.<br /><br />The ministry had on September 16, 2021, announced a PLI scheme for drones and drone components with an allocation of Rs 120 crore spread over three financial years.<br /><br />The ministry said on Wednesday: “The list of beneficiaries is likely to be expanded further since some more manufacturers are likely to exceed the eligibility criteria for the full financial year 2021-22."<br /><br />"The final list of PLI beneficiaries is expected to be released by June 30 after detailed scrutiny of their financial results and other specified documents," it mentioned.<br /><br />The ministry said the eligibility criteria for the PLI scheme includes an annual sales turnover of Rs 2 crore for drone companies and Rs 50 lakh for drone components manufacturers; and value addition of over 40 per cent of sales turnover.<br /><br />The PLI scheme came in September 2021 as a follow-through of the liberalised <keyword id="2730972" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-rules" source="Orion">Drone Rules</keyword>, 2021, released by the ministry on August 25, 2021.<br /><br />Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had on September 16, 2021 said that the Indian drone industry will have a total turnover of up to Rs 15,000 crore by 2026 as the government has given a major boost to the sector with the PLI scheme.<br /><br /><strong>SEE ALSO:<br /><a target="_blank" class="c-link c-message_attachment__title_link" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/banks/news/five-banks-that-offer-cheaper-home-loan-rates-in-india/articleshow/90959872.cms">Five banks that offer cheaper home loan rates in India</a><br /></strong><a target="_blank" class="c-link c-message_attachment__title_link" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/sustainability/article/indian-livelihoods-turn-less-green-sharp-decline-in-hiring-green-jobs-over-the-last-five-years-compared-to-the-global-average/articleshow/90971775.cms"><strong>Indian livelihoods turn less green! Adani JV and IdeaForge among 14 firms shortlisted as beneficiaries for drone PLI scheme

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A gray whale without a tail was spotted off the coast of California on March 13.</li><li>The boat captain who saw the animal <a href="https://www.ocregister.com/2023/03/14/video-captures-whale-with-missing-tail-near-shore-in-newport-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noticed</a> it had learned how to swim with just its pectoral fins.</li></ul><p>A gray whale that lost its tail was spotted off the coast of California this month, revealing that it's found a way to swim on its side.</p><p>The tail-less whale was likely plying the 6,000-mile migration route between feeding grounds in Alaska and breeding grounds near Mexico, Jessica Roame, the education manager for Newport Whales in California, <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/whale-no-tail-seen-newport-beach-california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Fox 11 Los Angeles.</a></p><p>"The whale is maybe a little underweight but not dramatically so," Roame told the outlet, calling the specimen a "miracle whale." That assessment implies the whale's tail injury hasn't prevented it from finding food or migrating, Newport Whales told Fox LA.</p><p>Whales <a href="https://www.whalesforever.com/whales-fins-and-flukes.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">primarily propel themselves with their flukes.</a></p><p>A drone operated by boat charter company Newport Coastal Adventure caught footage of the fluke-less whale in action.</p><p>Newport Coastal Adventure's owner, Ryan Lawler, <a href="https://www.ocregister.com/2023/03/14/video-captures-whale-with-missing-tail-near-shore-in-newport-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told California daily The Orange County Register</a> that his company spotted the whale on March 13. They noticed it was swimming with just the use of its pectoral fins while leaning hard to one side, he said.</p><p>"It definitely had a unique swimming style because it had to compensate for not having a tail anymore," Lawler said, per The Orange County Register.</p><p>Lawler said the whale was swimming at 3 miles per hour, compared to an adult gray whale's typical speed of 4 miles per hour, according to the outlet.</p><p>Fox LA, citing whale experts, reported that the whale likely lost its tail after it got caught in commercial fishing gear.</p><p><a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/02/23/whale-with-no-tail-makes-appearance-off-newport-beach-coast/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Another Newport sighting</a> of a gray whale without a tail occurred in February 2018. A photographer who filmed the specimen said it was heading north and "favoring its right side after each breath." </p><p>"However, despite the impairment, the whale's doing seemingly well as it adapted to the loss of an integral limb," photographer Brooke Palmer wrote.</p><p>It is unclear if the whale sighted in 2018 was the same whale seen in March. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Singapore has been pushing hard to fit robots into its society and workforce in recent years.</li><li>It's started putting robots in policing roles, cleaning jobs, retail work, and hotel services.</li></ul><p>Robocops, robo-cleaners, robo-waiters, and robo-dogs — Singapore seems to want it all.</p><p>The city-state, home to 6 million people, even had robots nagging people to don masks and avoid crowding during the pandemic.</p><p>In the last four years, Singapore's government has showcased more than a dozen high-profile trials deploying robots in the country's airport, malls, parks, and worksites.</p><p>Many of these ventures are still in the early stages, though some have become fixtures in popular areas around the city. </p><p>Here are five ways Singapore is trying to use its brand new bots, and where you can find them.</p><h2>1. Police </h2><div type="image" title="A Singaporean police robot during a demonstration at Changi Airport." height="1000" width="1500" msid="103389354" hostid="261" sizebytes="106562"></div><p>Singapore's police started deploying patrol robots at Changi Airport airport in April. Each bot is equipped with speakers, an LCD screen, sirens, and blinkers to communicate with people.</p><p>A camera on the bot livestreams a feed directly to a police control room, according to authorities.</p><p>There's also a small, silver button on the robot that lets people connect directly to an officer. "More robots will be progressively deployed across Singapore," <a href="https://www.police.gov.sg/Media-Room/Police-Life/2023/06/Police-Patrol-Robots-in-Action" target="_blank" rel="noopener">local police said in a press release.</a></p><p>Authorities are also trialing a <a href="https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/rover-x-robot-dog-scdf-spf-patrol-2447501" target="_blank" rel="noopener">four-legged robot called Rover-X,</a> which is supposed to help officers detect poisonous chemicals in situations like search-and-rescue operations.</p><h2>2. Cleaners</h2><p>Robotics company Weston Robot introduced its auto sweeper in Gardens by the Bay, a tourist attraction in Singapore's downtown, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7H1gDKqQFo">in a video in August.</a></p><p>The outdoor cleaning bot can <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfCtVIQUcnQ&amp;t=94s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sweep up debris like dry leaves and ply routes on its own</a>, though it's yet to see a mass rollout in the country. </p><p>Weston Robot also <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=101&amp;v=bFBvUWTSDDY&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.westonrobot.com%2F&amp;source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&amp;feature=emb_title" target="_blank" rel="noopener">designs automatic lawnmowers</a>, which it said can cut grass on hills. Both robots were debuted by NParks, the authority in charge of Singapore's parks, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHSAP-4UxIU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in May.</a></p><p>Bot developers are also trialing cleaning drones that can hose down structures like Gardens by the Bay's Supertrees, local outlet <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/robots-assemble-meet-singapore-s-robotic-workforce" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Straits Times reported in February.</a></p><p>In 2020, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-singapore-robot/exterminate-uv-robot-sent-to-singapore-mall-to-zap-coronavirus-idUSKBN22X17B" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one shopping mall started trialing</a> a $50,000 robot that wanders its premises and flashes ultraviolet lights, presumably to kill off COVID-19. </p><h2>3. Park lookouts</h2><div type="image" title="A man jogs behind Spot as it roams Bishan-Ang Moh Kio Park." height="3157" width="4735" msid="103389359" hostid="261" sizebytes="1505918"></div><p>As Singapore enacted lockdown-like conditions in the early pandemic months of 2020, the country allowed people to leave their homes for exercise.</p><p>Runners and cyclists flooded the country's parks, prompting the appearance of a <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/robot-reminds-visitors-about-safe-distancing-measures-in-bishan-ang-mo-kio-park" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston Dynamics dog robot</a> and a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfyNMdxLzik" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mini buggy</a> roaming jogging routes and blaring messages for people to stay a safe distance from each other.</p><p>The robot dog, dubbed Spot, <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/tech-news/robot-dog-spot-finds-new-work-scanning-worksites-sending-results-over-5g" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was later deployed in 2021</a> to construction sites to help supervisors check if a structure is built according to the right specifications. </p><h2><strong>4. Hotel staff</strong></h2><p>Several hotels in Singapore have started featuring robot waiters in their marketing to attract holiday-goers, <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/36Kr-KrASIA/Hotel-delivery-robots-bring-winning-edge-to-Chinese-startup" target="_blank" rel="noopener">following the widespread use of such bots in China's hotels.</a></p><p>Trained to navigate hotel lobbies, corridors, and elevators, they're supposed to deliver your room service and amenities like towels, water, and hangers. </p><p>Hotel chain YOTEL offers a "Robocation," which <a href="https://www.yotel.com/en/hotels/yotel-singapore/offers/robocation">banks on service from its twin robowaiters, Yoshi and Yolanda.</a> It debuted <a href="https://www.tripzilla.com/yotel-singapore-twin-robots/69784" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the twin bots in 2017.</a></p><p>And The M Social Hotel, run by Millennium &amp; Copthorne Hotels, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/singapore-room-service-robot-aura/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced a similar robot, AURA, in 2017.</a></p><h2>5. Retail and delivery work</h2><div type="image" title="This photograph taken on July 22, 2021 shows a delivery robot named Camello arriving to deliver goods." height="3151" width="4726" msid="103389362" hostid="261" sizebytes="1154380"></div><p>In 2020, French sporting goods retailer Decathlon unveiled a stock-checking robot dubbed PAL at its flagship store in Singapore.</p><p>It's a human-sized bot that's supposed use RFID technology to check products. According to Decathlon, PAL can complete a full check of store's shelves in five hours by itself.</p><p>And at a neighborhood shopping center in Punggol, a northern residential district, <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/housing/robots-that-move-goods-from-loading-bays-to-shops-among-features-at-new-punggol-neighbourhood-centre" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shops started trialing a robot in 2022</a> that ferries their goods from loading bays to storefronts.</p><p>The government also debuted <a href="https://www.imda.gov.sg/resources/blog/blog-articles/2021/03/release-the-delivery-robots">two robots called Camellos in 2021</a> that deliver groceries or e-commerce products to neighborhoods. Each robot travels at under two miles per hour, and has AI-powered navigation systems that help them avoid obstacles or stop if someone gets in their way.</p>

<keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> on Wednesday announced that it has consolidated its tablet leadership in India, with 220 per cent year-on-year growth in the June quarter.<br /><br />Samsung ended the June quarter with 45 percent volume market share, helping the company consolidate its <keyword id="6361927" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tablets" source="Orion">tablets</keyword> leadership for the second successive quarter, according to the latest data released by <keyword id="6377157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDC" source="Orion">IDC</keyword> Worldwide Quarterly Personal <keyword id="12053786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Computing-Devices-Tracker" source="Orion">Computing Devices Tracker</keyword>.<br /><br />"Samsung's relentless focus on consumer innovations means it is the only full-range player in the tablets business in India, with products across price spectrum. Samsung's tablets have done extremely well across mass (less than Rs 20,000), mid (Rs 20K-40K) as well as premium (Rs 40K) segments," the south Korean tech giant said in a statement.<br /><br />In the mass segment ($250), Samsung had 49 per cent volume market share in the June quarter, according to IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Devices Tracker. Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Tata group and other top stocks to watch out for on September 16

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Retailers, from <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> to <keyword id="377607" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Walgreens">Walgreens</keyword>, are holding a <keyword id="426417" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="design-competition">design competition</keyword> with the goal of replacing an environmental scourge: the plastic bag. </li><li>Over 100 billion single-use <keyword id="6357386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-bags">plastic bags</keyword> are used in the U.S. every year, and less than 10% of those are recycled.</li><li>Winners can receive up to $100,000 for their solutions, which can vary from new ideas for materials to bagless strategies using drone drop-offs. </li></ul><p>Paper or plastic? Or maybe, neither?</p><p><keyword id="6359938" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="target">Target</keyword>, Walmart, <keyword id="151277" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="CVs">CVS</keyword>, and other retailers kicked off a <a href="https://www.openideo.com/challenge-briefs/beyond-the-bag-challenge">design competition</a> on Tuesday to find an environmentally friendly alternative to the single-use plastic bag.  The Beyond the Bag Challenge will award 10-12 winners payouts of up to $100,000 each for their solutions.</p><p>Up to six applicants will also be invited to join a business accelerator to develop their ideas further, with the goal of transforming the way that customers bring home goods. Solutions can range anywhere from new bag materials to drone drop-offs. </p><p>Over 100 billion single-use plastic bags are used in the U.S. every year, and less than 10% of those are recycled, according to the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0956053X17306335">Waste Management</a> and the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2019-11/documents/2016_and_2017_facts_and_figures_data_tables_0.pdf">EPA</a>. This waste doesn't only accumulate in landfills, plastic <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> bags are among the top 10 items found on shorelines, according to <a href="https://oceanconservancy.org/trash-free-seas/international-coastal-cleanup/annual-data-release/">Ocean Conservancy</a>. </p><p>Some major retailers, like <keyword id="321410" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Whole-Foods">Whole Foods</keyword>, have already eliminated single-use plastic bags from their stores. <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/research/environment-and-natural-resources/plastic-bag-legislation.aspx">State governments,</a> such as California, Connecticut, Delaware, and New York, have also initiated bans on single-use plastic bags.</p><p>But adoption of these laws has been piecemeal, and some retailers like CVS moved to provide multi-ply plastic bags as their reusable alternative. In addition, places like San Francisco and Maine and have rolled back or delayed their bans on single-use plastic bags, citing concerns about cleanliness amid the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p>"There's no silver bullet. We are looking to rethink how we get our goods from store to destination," said Kate Daly, managing director of the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop, an investment firm organizing the initiative. "How do we get foods home without a bag in the first place? Can we leverage technologies or artificial intelligence to ensure material flow happens in another way?"</p><p>In recent years, consumers have clamored for retailers to make a change.  Last year, about half a million people signed a <a href="https://www.change.org/p/target-stop-filling-the-world-with-plastic-bags?use_react=false">petition</a> asking Target to eliminate plastic bags.</p><p>Corporate partners Target, Walmart, and CVS collectively donated $15 million to start the project.  Since then, Kroger and Walgreens have joined with the hopes of also implementing the solutions across their stores. </p><p>Kroger is the first of the group to set a deadline for eliminating plastic bags. In 2018, the grocery company <a href="https://www.npr.org/2018/08/23/641215873/attention-shoppers-kroger-says-it-is-phasing-out-plastic-bags">announced</a> that it plans to stop offering single-use bags completely by 2025. </p><p>Daly explains that the solutions will be honed and vetted over the next three years, before hitting stores. Her organization started a similar project with Starbucks and McDonald's to reinvent their coffee cups back in 2018. They piloted the cups in February.</p><p>Daly had advice for designers hoping to make a difference.</p><p>"We have amazing entrepreneurs and innovators, but a lot of them have never visited a material recovery facility. They've never really thought about what happens to their product after it leaves somebody's hands," said Daly in an interview with Business Insider. "In addition to thinking about sourcing the materials, where do you imagine that this design ends up after the user is done with it? Have that inform your design all the way through."</p><p>Designs are due September 10 and winners will be announced by November 24. America's biggest retailers are holding a design competition to kill the plastic bag once and for all — and winners can receive up to $100,000 for their solutions

<p class="drop-cap">One morning this past spring, I was working at my desk when Biz, a fellow tech reporter with a bloodhound's nose for news, texted me a screenshot of my husband's Twitter bio.</p><p>Something was missing. Kyle had deleted the name of his startup.</p><p>"What happened to Playbyte????" Biz wrote.</p><p>Confused, I wrote back, "Wait that's so weird. I'll talk to him."</p><p>Kyle and I both work from home, and I wanted to confront him then and there. But talking about my husband's battle-scarred startup always had the potential to turn into a fight. And if his reason for scrubbing Playbyte's name was that he was winding it down, well, that would be an even longer conversation. </p><p>That night, as he plugged in his Apple Watch, iPhone, and Steam Deck on his side of the bed, I sidled up to him and asked what the story was. </p><p>Kyle shrugged it off. Playbyte, which had started as a kind of TikTok for games (which I loved) and then pivoted to software for indie game developers (meh, he could do better), was about to pivot again. For weeks, Kyle told me, he and Playbyte's two employees — all who were left after he laid off several others during the tech downturn — had been working on a new tool, one that would let anyone build a web app by describing it to a chatbot. I knew that part, though barely because Kyle had been sharing less and less about the company with me. </p><p>Then he said he didn't relate to the name Playbyte anymore.</p><p>My cheeks flushed. I wanted to scream. Kyle had put 3 ½ years of his life — of <em>our </em>life — into building his startup, and now he had wiped it from public view in a few keystrokes. That, I told him, sent a message to his 20,000 Twitter followers that he had given up. What he was really doing was siphoning off code from the old project to start a new one. Had he considered the knock-on effects on his ability to attract new investors or talent? (After eight years of reporting on startups and venture capital, I'm sad to say, I reflexively use phrases like "knock-on effects" with my husband in bed.)</p><p>Kyle knit his brow and explained why he didn't need more money or engineers. I changed the subject to what we should put on before bed. We watched "The Mandalorian" in stewing silence.</p><p>By the time I rolled over and turned off the light, I was feeling a pang of remorse. I wished I had told Kyle that I would understand if he wanted to quit. I'd reassure him that he hadn't failed. I had the words ready, but I couldn't bring myself to say them. I still wanted to present as the kind of wife who had unlimited confidence in her husband's ability to turn things around.</p><p>In my reporting on the world of company building, I've grown familiar with the myriad ways startups end — with acquisition jackpots or bankruptcies, with trading debuts or lawsuits, with Champagne or jail. "The myth<em> </em>of a successful journey is that it starts with an idea, followed by a ton of hardship, and then a gradual and linear rise to the finish line," the founder and investor Scott Belsky writes in his book "The Messy Middle." It's taken living with a founder to fully dispel that myth for me. "In reality, the middle is extraordinarily volatile — a continuous sequence of ups and downs, flush with uncertainty and struggle," Belsky adds. That's as apt a description of Kyle's startup as it is of our relationship. And in our case, the startup's middle has surely been made messier by the fact that the startup's founder is married to a startup reporter.</p><p>Lately, I've been fixated on a nagging question: Would my marriage be happier if my husband's startup failed?</p><p class="drop-cap">Four years ago, when Kyle began talking over dinners and dog walks about becoming a founder, I secretly hoped he'd change his mind. I'd written hundreds of stories about the life he was signing up for: 80-hour work weeks, high stress, low salaries. Not the ideal lifestyle to adopt, right as we were planning to start a family. I told Biz and Jillian, also a tech reporter, over breakfast in San Francisco's Mission District that I thought this was a bad idea. They asked whether we had savings to fall back on.</p>          <p>Nine in 10 startups fail. Yet, at the time, it didn't occur to me that my husband's might. During the 10 years I'd known Kyle, things always had a way of working out for him. When he was 20, he dropped out of the University of California, Berkeley, to write for TechCrunch. Before long, he had parlayed a sit-down interview with the renowned investor Chris Dixon into a dealmaking role at Andreessen Horowitz. In 2019, while working at a drone startup, he caught the entrepreneurial bug.</p><p>My worst fear about his startup wasn't that he'd fail. My worst fear was that I'd never see him, and we'd grow apart as he became a staggering success. Late nights of toiling over code would lead to private jets and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employees-inside-adam-neumanns-wework-reveal-a-wild-culture-2019-9">alcohol-fueled</a> company retreats, and I'd be left behind, reading about his corporate conquests under someone else's byline. Earlier that year, Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott had filed for divorce amid a tabloid scandal that included love nests and racy texts with a news anchor. I wondered whether someday our children would spend every other weekend at Kyle's Pacific Heights mansion with his own "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-lauren-sanchez-relationship-timeline-photos">alive girl</a>."</p><p>But I didn't tell him any of this. Like my mother, and her mother before her, I am ruthlessly nonconfrontational. When I was growing up, my dad lovingly referred to our "Schulze talk" — the thing you say when you're upset, instead of what you really mean. Becoming a reporter and learning to ask hard questions of founders and investors helped immensely, but being hard on the aspiring founder I slept next to was another thing. I worried that if I didn't support his career, my husband might love me less.</p><p>As Kyle was conceiving his startup, I found out I was pregnant. For that, I did confront him. I told him I'd feel more comfortable with him becoming a solopreneur if we moved from San Francisco, where rents were catastrophically high at the time, to New York, where we would be closer to family when the baby arrived. He agreed to my condition, even though it meant he'd be a continent away from the investors and talent he needed to court.</p><p>Kyle, who learned to program in fifth grade so he could <a target="_blank" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_modding">mod</a> his favorite video games, dreamed up an app for creating and sharing simple games in a scrolling feed. I thought it was fantastic, and well-timed: TikTok was just then taking off in America. Together, we picked out a name by covering our living room walls with sticky notes filled with words and phrases. He settled on Playbyte, a nod to both the app's bite-size games and our tug-of-war-loving pit bull, Nubs.</p><div type="image" title="Melia puts the box of post-its away." height="1650" width="3300" msid="105235737" hostid="261"></div><p>I put the Post-its in a shoebox of keepsakes, along with handwritten love notes and ticket stubs from our travels, at the back of our closet. Back then, I imagined I would get the Playbyte Post-it framed and give it to Kyle on the day he took the company public, generating a windfall for our family that would pay for our daughter's tuition and so much more.</p><p>Lately, though, the Post-its feel like just another relic of our relationship, ones we'll dig out decades from now and laugh over. "Remember when you tried doing a startup?" I'll say.</p><p class="drop-cap">The most shocking thing I've learned about startups is how boring they are. Day to day, almost nothing happens. There's a call with an investor, a coding sprint, and a team stand-up. So much for "move fast and break things." In my house, it was more "futz endlessly with a Figma file and chat with employees on Discord all day."</p><p>Being a startup reporter married to a startup founder isn't without its perks. We can talk about our days without having to explain a million little things. When I get tripped up on jargon such as "transformer" or "smart contracts" or anything Marc Andreessen blogs, Kyle is my Google Translate for tech speak. He rolls deep in juicy news tips, which I'm frustratingly unable to use. And he sets his own hours. When I have to work late, he can easily cover parenting duties.</p><p>At times, though, it was strange to experience the way my professional and personal lives had blurred. One drizzly morning last spring, as the tech sector entered year two of a global correction marked by mass layoffs and a dearth of venture-capital funding, I was reporting a story about a looming "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-fears-exctinction-event-startup-failure-rate-increase-2023-6">mass extinction event</a>" for startups. In our living room, my husband had gathered the team for an off-site. By then, they had already killed the first two iterations of the startup and had begun work on the chatbot app builder. They spoke hunched over laptops on the couch, surrounded by paper coffee cups and twisting charger cables.</p><p>"This isn't going to be the thing that determines if we become a billion-dollar company or go out of business," I overheard an engineer say matter-of-factly.</p><p>The next night, when Kyle and I were out to dinner with the team, I admitted how bizarre it had been for me to eavesdrop on the challenges they faced at the same time I was interviewing people in the tech industry about the Darwinian moment that startups were facing. To my surprise, Kyle had a confession of his own. He'd been listening in on my interviews, and overhearing talk of things such as "startup mortality rates" didn't exactly give him hope. </p><p>I'm not sure Kyle has found as many perks to being a startup founder married to a startup reporter. Perhaps more than any other job, entrepreneurs are encouraged to fake it till they make it, to either bountiful or cataclysmic results. "Startups only exist because their founders are willing to suspend the disbelief of the probable and instead consider what is possible," <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2016/02/13/the-probable-the-possible-the-delusional/#:~:text=Startups%20only%20exist%20because%20their,instead%20consider%20what%20is%20possible.">Eric Paley</a>, an early Uber investor, once wrote. Steve Jobs' infamous "reality-distortion field" let him convince himself and nearly everyone around him of practically anything. Kyle's reality-distortion field seemed strong, and it's often been at war with my journalistic service weapon, a bullshit radar gun.</p><p>I knew too much about what could go wrong, like a first lady who doubled as a reporter in the White House press corps. I often assumed the worst because I'd reported dozens of stories about the worst. When one of his favorite employees quit to start his own company — just two months before Playbyte debuted in the App Store — it put both of us in a tailspin of doubt. Had the employee left, we wondered, because he lost confidence in Kyle's idea?</p><p>As Playbyte struggled to gain users and investors, I worried less about being the relentlessly positive cheerleader. I began plying Kyle with unsolicited reviews of his pitch deck and interrogating his every move. Did the team really need those logo fleece blankets? When the company had layoffs in spring 2022, had he done everything possible to minimize the impact on his employees? I thought I knew better than he did — after all, I'd just spoken to a dozen talent partners at venture-capital firms for an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-layoffs-how-to-help-employees-laid-off-2022-6">article</a>, "11 ways companies can ease the burden on laid-off employees." That night, we sat on the bed, bickering over how long the company should extend healthcare benefits. I wanted him to stretch coverage longer. He wanted to be comforted.</p><p>Kyle began to bristle at my feedback. Knotted with anxiety, he started withholding details and sought my input less and less. He was trying to find the idea that clicked and found no joy in discussing those that blew up on the launchpad.</p><div type="image" title="Kyle works out with dumbells." height="1650" width="3300" msid="105235740" hostid="261"></div><p>Like other founders I've met, Kyle's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-founders-mental-health-stress-economy-funding-2022-7">mood</a> is moored to the health of the business. When he's excited about a development, he oozes confidence and throws himself into the company, often working past dinner. I rarely mind caring for our toddler solo on those nights. Better a happy partner, I figure, than a cranky coparent. Because when a bug creeps into the software, or an investor ignores his email, Kyle can be hard to be around. He snaps at coffee spills and bad drivers and grunts loud enough at his computer to jolt our dog awake. I know things are tense when I hear the dumbbells clanging from his office in the middle of the day. He feels the upsets so intensely because he believes every one reflects on his acumen.</p><p class="drop-cap">Over the years, I've come to believe that Kyle would cut off his own arm, "127 Hours" style, before putting an end to his startup. After the layoffs, when I asked if he had considered winding down the company and returning some of the funding to his investors, he immediately launched into a pitch on how well the beta test was going. I'm convinced he's going to keep building until he's spent the startup's last dollar.</p><p>I often write about founders having blow-through-walls resilience. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-are-clubhouse-founders-paul-davison-rohan-seth-2021-1">Clubhouse</a> founders Rohan Seth and Paul Davison had at least nine failed apps between them before hatching the breakout app of the pandemic. Steve Huffman led the turnaround of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-reddit-hired-engineers-after-revolt-ceo-steve-huffman-interview-2018-9">Reddit</a> after a firestorm of user revolts and hate speech. I wrote about them in nearly glowing terms. But the same determination I so admired in them I found unnerving in Kyle. I was exhausted, my patience eroding with each new round of hiring and firing, capital raising, and pivoting.</p><p>I told my therapist, my friends, and my boss, whose husband had started and sold his own startup, how I wished my husband would get a "normal job." They encouraged me to tell him how I felt. But that would require me to confront my fear of confrontation. </p><p>More than once, I tried to "Inception" Kyle by talking up other companies I thought he'd enjoy working for. He could join a venture firm in Boston, say, and make a six-figure salary, plus a share of the fund's profits. I knew that shutting down his startup would deal a disastrous blow to his confidence. But it would be temporary. In a new role, he could resume a healthy relationship with work. The weight of failure would fall across the entire organization, not on his shoulders alone. He could feel good about himself again.</p>          <p>I could breathe easier, too. The money would certainly help. But more than wealth, I want things to be less fraught at home. I want to talk about Kyle's work, and mine, without tiptoeing around a minefield. I want him to be free of the torment the startup puts him through. I want to release myself of the guilt I feel for tearing us away from the Bay Area, where he would have had an easier time getting funded. I want peace of mind.</p><p class="drop-cap">One afternoon in September, I watched Kyle leave his office and face-plant onto the bed. I went over and placed a hand on his back. He looked up at me, tears forming. </p><p>"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked.</p><p>He told me that in a few hours he had to call an investor and share the news: The app-building chatbot was over.<br /><br />I tried to assure Kyle that his investor had calls like that all the time, especially this year, as founders twisted themselves into pretzels trying to get funded. Just because everything hasn't clicked into place yet, I told him, doesn't mean it won't eventually. Kyle sank back into the pillow and sighed, and I went back to work.</p><p>Now Kyle's startup has pivoted a third time. Instead of creating software to help amateurs and indie developers make video games, he and his team plan to use what they've learned to create their own game. The idea is a first-person shooter and an homage to a game, set in a ruinous Russian war zone, that became a pandemic smash hit.</p><p>I'm skeptical. In my years of reporting on startups, I've never heard of a pivot like that. Game studios don't exactly scream venture-backed business. Many are bootstrapped or funded by an incumbent studio searching for the next big hit. In the past few years, venture investment in gaming has swelled, but it's still a<em> </em>precarious time for startups that need to raise capital.</p><p>The truth is, I don't know if Kyle's startup will make it.</p><p>But in the throes of the pivot, Kyle and I faced our most harrowing experience yet. On Labor Day, we were role-playing characters from "Legend of Zelda" with our 3-year-old when Nubs bounded into the kitchen. He jumped on me and kissed me hard before padding over to Kyle. That's when our daughter came up behind Nubs, startling him, and he bit her on the face, slicing her eyebrow and cheek.</p><p>She turned out to be OK. But that night in bed, after she had fallen asleep, Kyle and I wept, cradling Nubs in our arms as we had every night for six years. We agreed to call the vet in the morning to discuss euthanasia. Nubs, Playbyte's namesake, was Kyle's best friend. If we went through with it, I asked, did he think he could handle being with me at the vet to put Nubs down?</p><p>I wasn't sure how he would respond. <ul><li>Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for 2022-23 in Parliament on Tuesday.</li><li>This year's budget is indexed towards startups, MSMEs, infrastructure projects, rural revival, digital payment apps, telecom growth and affordable housing.</li><li>We reached out to digital, media and creative agencies to understand how the increased focus on digitalisation, sustainability, blockchain and push to MSME can impact the ad and marketing industry.</li></ul>Be it the introduction of a Digital University to make education accessible across the country or the proposed launch of a Digital currency by the Reserve Bank of India to the government’s focus on promoting digital payments and fintech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made it is clear that digital is the way forward. The Union Budget 2022-23 aims to boost the country's digital infrastructure and enable a cashless economy. <br /><br />The government also announced that it will set up an Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) promotion task force to give a push to the animation and gaming industry. <br /><br />To facilitate the roll-out of 5G mobile services in India, FM Sitharaman said that Spectrum auctions will be conducted in 2022. This, in turn, will give impetus to Voice, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality and pave the way for the Metaverse. The Digital Rupee using blockchain will help Indians accept virtual currency and accelerate cryptocurrency exchange in India. Overall, the budget also shows a promise for Electric Vehicle brands, digital payment apps, MSMEs, gaming industry and start-ups. <br /><br />We reached out to digital, media and creative agencies to understand how the increased focus on digitalisation, sustainability and blockchain can impact the advertising and marketing industry. Here’s what they said:<br /><br /><strong>Anupriya Acharya, South Asia CEO, Publicis Groupe:</strong><br /><br />The Budget is positive, growth-oriented and with reforms in the right direction.<br /><br />The advent of 5G is sure to transform communications – for our industry it will help creation of better AV, voice and AR/VR experiences. It will also fuel digital payments, streaming entertainment, gaming, e-commerce, tele-medicine etc which in turn will aid more Unicorns! It is also heartening to note that a special Task Force is being set up for AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comic) as this will help us build the much needed capacity both for domestic as well as global markets. And then there have been no changes in income-tax slabs for people, which many consumer segments were worried about. This in turn boosts consumer sentiment. From e-passports, to battery swapping for electric vehicles, setting up of optic fiber in the remotest of villages, setting up of a digital university and skilling through an e-portal, the big push is for technology, digital infrastructure and empowerment.<br /><br /><strong>Narayan Devanathan, Chief Client Officer, dentsu India:<br /></strong><br />Having gone through the 38-page document of the Finance Minister’s budget speech, I decided to do a search for a couple of words that I thought kept repeating throughout her speech. The words “will be” occurred 110 times in the entire speech. When I narrowed my search to the single word “will,” the number rose to 362.<br /><br />To me, those two words sum up the essence of what this year’s budget is and is not. What it is, is a future-focused budget, aiming at the distant vision of India@100, with a 25-year Amrit Kaal lead-up. What it is not, and what I felt was sorely needed this year of all years, is a present-focused budget.<br /><br />A punishing 2021 for the aam aadmi with more-than-usual expenditure on health and sustenance meant the general populace was looking for immediate relief that would place more cash in their household budgets. That did not happen. Nor was there any extraordinary investment in relieving the healthcare expenditure burden. For all the importance of farmers in upcoming poll-bound states, there was neither major sop nor stimulus given to back the importance of agriculture as a spine if not engine of the economy. Even the MSME sectors were only handed a slightly longer lease of life with the extension of the ECLGS, but there was no real move to stimulate consumption by placing more cash at consumers’ disposal, for example, extending LTA claims to restaurants (and not just accommodation).<br /><br />There is perhaps plenty for the industry to cheer about since it can afford to think about the future and a slightly longer term than just the here and now of survival. The stock market did cheer up even before the FM’s speech, but that only served to underscore the dichotomy between the real health of the population and the Minority of Haves. When the general population probably can’t afford to wait for the benefits of trickle-down economics to reach them in yet another trying year, the dreams and wheels of a consumer-driven economy might move slower than the industry might like, despite the many future-facing and progressive policies announced.<br /><br /><strong>Virat Tandon, Group CEO, MullenLowe Lintas Group:<br /></strong> <br />The union budget can be termed as consistent with the government's vision to reach the 5 trillion GDP mark by 2025-26. Hence, the strong focus on capex to boost infrastructure that connects and streamlines middle India and provides the engines of entrepreneurship across the length and breadth of the country. It also shows India's commitment to bring a digital first economy with the 5G rollout planned for next financial year, clarity on India's policy for cryptocurrency, data centres, EVs and our very own digital Rupee. The 2022-23 budget finely balanced fiscal retreat with supporting economic recovery. The budget focused on a familiar strategy of driving capital expenditure to drive growth, to crowd in private investment through higher public spending. Although markets could be disappointed with a higher fiscal deficit of 6.4% of GDP for FY23 than expected, it is perhaps prudent to not undertake aggressive fiscal consolidation at this nascent stage of recovery. While elevated market borrowings are likely to pressurize bond yields, the inclusion of green bonds in the borrowing plan is an interesting innovation. In terms of specific policy announcements, the move towards self-reliance through protection for domestic manufacturers (change in custom and import duties) aligns with the long-term goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The government has extended the startup tax holiday and concessional tax for manufacturing startups by a year. While that was on the cards, it doesn’t address the core need of startups to be given a longer tax holiday of 5 years as required. One of the most encouraging aspects of the budget has been the announcement to set up an AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics) promotion task force to plan and build domestic capacity for serving domestic as well as global markets. Loss from the transfer of virtual digital assets cannot be set off against any other income. The creation of a unified logistics platform and the developments of 100 new cargo terminals in the next three years are significant steps in improving the supply chain ecosystem in the country. Infrastructure status given to Data Centers will provide a huge boost to the fast-evolving digital environment of the country. The fiscal outcome is broadly in line with our expectations with the government having continued its focus on infrastructure and rural demand.<br /><br /><strong>Himanshu Arya, Founder and CEO, Grapes:</strong><br /><br />The Union Budget for the financial year 2022-23 has set the stage with an invigorated focus on ramping up the process of the digital revolution. The government’s focus on the digital ecosystem is a progressive move to render an inclusive landscape for job openings and entrepreneurial opportunities. The extension of tax incentives for startups for one more year will give a slight relief to the industry. I hope that the cash flow improves in the market.
