Given my single status, I immediately felt the threat of being seated at the dreaded "kids and singles" table.I'd avoided thinking about the wedding for most of the past year. I'm not good at finding dresses, planning trips, or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/is-it-rude-to-ask-for-a-plus-one-2018-11">hunting down a plus-one</a>. The response was overwhelming. Picture a digital deluge of charming men from all corners of the internet, each vying for the coveted role of my wedding date. It turns out, there's no shortage of men willing to step into the role of Prince Charming when a trip to Croatia is on the line (though some didn't seem to realize I would not be paying for their flight). The next morning, I was knee-deep in a sea of prospective wedding dates. And people <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@stefdag/video/7220493388993367338">got creative</a>, especially in the Photoshop section. One guy even made me a slideshow of all the weddings he'd been to so he could prove he'd be a perfect wedding partner. With 73 applications, I felt I'd never have to be single again.As I screened these applications on my TV via AirPlay — with the company of my closest girlfriends and a bottle of cabernet sauvignon — I realized that this entire experience was hilarious, not because of the potential for romance but because of what I had created, all by myself.I had taken matters into my own hands, turned a seemingly dreadful task into a fun game, and found a way to celebrate myself by getting a bunch of — no offense to them — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/rapper-t-pain-has-labeled-drake-king-of-simp-music-2023-5">simp-y guys</a> to download the Adobe suite. Once I got there, I realized that being single didn't equate to being alone.I could chat freely with everyone there without the burden of a guest whom I needed to stick by. I also MCed the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/wedding-planner-etiquette-rules-guests-2017-11">entire rehearsal dinner</a> and gave a great bridesmaid speech, which I believe is up for a Golden Globe. Most importantly, I found another single bridesmaid to sit next to who was willing to go halfsies on both the chicken and pasta dinner options with me (a move I commonly refer to as "couple privilege").The best part? I got a bunch of solo pics in a gorgeous dress, which means my dating-app profile got a revamp. After the wedding, I was ready to go home and get back into dating at my own pace.<h2>I met someone right after I got home from the wedding</h2>As fate would have it, however, I met someone pretty soon after returning home (unsurprising, as I was tan and glowing after my relaxing solo vacation). He's also a comedian, and we met — you're going to want to sit down for this — in person, which these days feels almost impossible.So for now, I'm one of those people who can check "plus-one" when I'm invited to a wedding. That doesn't mean I necessarily always will, though, now that I know how enjoyable my own company is. In fact, I might opt to go to a few more by myself.

It has been edited for length and clarity.Decades ago, it seemed like every American child wanted to become an astronaut after seeing the United States' rapid progress in the space race.My aspirations were a little bit different. As a kid, I grew up playing video games with my dad, later moving on to playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a globally popular first-person shooter where I competed online with friends.It didn't take a man to walk on the moon to convince me of my future in high school. But when I started seeing people making a living playing video games professionally in high school? That was my astronaut moment. That's when I knew I wanted to compete at the highest level.With a clear goal, I set my sights on improving my skills within the game, eventually receiving a scholarship to play for Robert Morris University. Being a professional esports competitor wasn't the most well-known or traditional career path at the time. My friends didn't really seem to care that much until the streaming platform, Twitch, grew in popularity, and with it, interest in competitive esports.Being on a collegiate roster, I always had to perform at my best, even with a grueling schedule. I would've lost valuable scholarship money if I had been demoted from the starting roster.Thankfully, that didn't happen, and I graduated in 2019 with a degree in computer network and security and a master's degree in information systems.<h2>Taking the next step</h2>After graduating, I started working as a software developer at a virtual reality gaming company. I played some on the side, but I was quickly losing interest in Counter-Strike, the game I'd spent thousands of hours trying to perfect.Riot Games released Valorant in 2020 as the company's entry into the first-person tactical shooter games, which reignited my drive to compete.I had an incredible boss who understood that drive and supported me, allowing me to work on a non-traditional schedule as long as I accomplished all necessary tasks.The grind paid off, and in mid-2021, I was signed as a player to pro esports organization DarkZero's first Valorant roster, finally living out my dream on a professional team.<div type="image" title="Valorant" height="2160" width="3840" msid="109649286" hostid="261" sizebytes="404686"></div>But the esports world is fickle— you've got maybe two weeks of bad performances before your team axes you from the lineup or roster. After about nine months on the team, DarkZero decided to go a different route with its roster and booted me from the team.<h2>The harsh realities</h2>No longer on the DarkZero team, I now live in Austin and work remotely as a network and software engineer for my old virtual reality gaming job's parent company in Chicago.I haven't made it back to the paid, franchised division of Valorant esports just yet — I'm living off my $75,000 salary for now — but I am still competing, now in Valorant's Challengers League under the team "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.vlr.gg/team/14822/thinking-men">Thinking Men</a>."Money in esports is a tricky subject.In 2023, the vast majority of the <a target="_blank" href="https://valorantesports.com/news/valorant-challengers-na-2024-powered-by-knights-arena-is-back/en-us">North American Challengers League</a> — the group of teams competing for an opportunity to ascend to the top tier franchised division — were signed to paying contracts by organizations like FaZe Clan, The Guard, or OR Esports. That's no longer the case. Many teams and players are either unpaid or paid less than minimum wage, leading players to point fingers and try to figure out the culprit.And sure, while some of Valorant's highest-earning players make 6-to-7 figures each year between their contracts, endorsement deals, and lucrative streaming, that's simply not the norm. In the most-esteemed franchised league in Valorant, the floor of player salaries is $60,000.My time with DarkZero was before Riot Games introduced franchising to its leagues, meaning that floor wasn't even there. I only made around $48,000 with the team, but it was enough to live off of.I know it's controversial, but I feel like a lot of the players who are speaking out about low pay would rather complain than work a few hours a day Ubering, bartending, working for DoorDash, Starbucks, or any other part-time position.If you're going to justify investing 10 hours of your day playing the game, you need to find some other way of making it profitable, like streaming or individually coaching players.Many of these young esports athletes are coasting off their savings or burying themselves in debt trying to make it onto the stage at a Riot Games-organized event, just as I did after DarkZero.Taking a little bit of time off from the game each day to earn rent money probably wouldn't even affect their in-game performance. Even though I'm playing far fewer hours per day than before — I only spend around four hours after work each day playing other teams and strategizing for my weekly matches — I'm in my best-ever form.That wasn't always the case, though. Over the course of my esports career, I've gained the discipline to be able to acknowledge all of the factors that I can control and optimize them as best I can.When I was teamless last year, I had all of the time in the world to improve but didn't have an ounce of discipline. I've now realized discipline is the biggest factor when juggling getting better in-game while working an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job and still trying to get in bed by 11 p.m. each night.After years of competing, this is the first time where I don't care what the results are. If my team wins, or we get relegated or stay in for the rest of the season, none of it actually really matters to me.I'm not afraid of getting dropped and I'm not afraid of having to restart. Or so advocate astronauts, space agencies, and satellite technologists at Glasgow's COP26 climate summit, where the <a href="https://www.commonsensing.org.uk/#:~:text=IPP%20CommonSensing%20is%20an%20innovative,of%20satellite%20remote%20sensing%20technology.">CommonSensing solution</a> - an international project for building climate resilience through satellite remote sensing technology - is being showcased.Space has been co-opted as the playground of billionaires such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-stepping-down-amazon-ceo-space-2021-2">Jeff Bezos</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-rise-of-elon-musk-2016-7">Elon Musk</a>. But those working within the sector argue it is time for a perspective shift - technology and, specifically satellite data, is brimming with potential in aiding humanitarian crises, as well as climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts."When you look down on the planet, you see signs of both the cause and effect of climate change," explained British <keyword id="12153790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="astronaut" source="Orion">astronaut</keyword> Tim Peake, speaking at COP26. From aerial views of North American wildfires and Amazon deforestation to smog build-up above the Himalayas, Peake has seen it all. But space, he says, will also provide solutions in the form of data that is needed for informed decision-making. "We haven't got the time or money to get it wrong," he says.Afghanistan, Nigeria, Thailand, and Malawi, are all among those already leveraging satellites to <a href="https://unctad.org/news/countries-look-satellite-technology-tackle-food-insecurity">tackle issues of food insecurity</a>. But using space to combat climate change is relatively new terrain, though one gaining in traction; in May, NASA reinvigorated its role as <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01230-5">informing US Climate policy</a>; climate-related mission, <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-look-for-ground-breaking-uk-led-esa-mission-to-detect-climate-change">TRUTHS</a>, has just been launched in the UK. Half of all "essential climate variables" - empirical data supporting climate science and predicting future change - are collected from space. But until now, this data has had an accessibility problem. The CommonSensing solution, bringing together the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), Satellite Applications Catapult, the Commonwealth Secretariat, Devex, the United Kingdom's Met Office, The University of Portsmouth, Sensonomic, and Spatial Days, wants to change this.Specifically, the coalition will be working with <keyword id="12507542" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="small-island-developing-states" source="Orion">Small Island Developing States</keyword> (SIDS). Though on the frontlines of the <keyword id="11896310" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-crisis" source="Orion">climate crisis</keyword>, SIDS contribute least to greenhouse gas emissions and have limited access to crucial, climate-related data.By focusing on Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Fiji, all with populations living just five meters above sea level, the CommonSensing solution aims to improve food security, disaster response, and track the effects of climate change."We use geospatial technologies, typically satellite imagery, to create resilience to climate change," says Einar Bjørgo, UNOSAT Director. "Combining it with information like population distribution and vulnerabilities to climate hazards, which helps governments develop short-term tools to help with disaster preparedness, but also long-term initiatives that open access to climate funds."Each country is also receiving technical training in interpreting satellite data, and climate finance advisors will be embedded within governments. To receive financing, developing countries must often prove the effects of climate change through data reporting. But, as UNOSAT technical expert for Fiji, Lebaiatelaite Gaunavinaka, puts it, "There's a lack of accessible, relevant data robustly supporting evidence-based proposals." This data is crucial for demystifying investment criteria, she says.In Fiji, projects are already underway. Seawall interventions protect against water rising and coastal erosion, seedlings are distributed to enhance food security efforts, and coral biodiversity is safeguarded through mangrove planting."As a last resort, at-risk communities are flagged for relocation," says Guanavinaka. Satellite data can directly assist with these on-the-ground projects, she adds. "We mapped mangroves covering five islands and shared the data and methodology with the Ministry of Forest and Ministry of Lands so they can replicate the same for the smaller islands." Covid-19 has slowed progress, but the teams remain optimistic. "It's important to have people from the governments of SIDS sitting with us over time," says Bjørgo. "We are sharing data among each organization, and involving those on the ground." This kind of collaboration, he adds, is infinitely useful in advancing the science and funding that will combat climate change.

Space technology can help countries disproportionately impacted by climate change get the help they need

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="9121390" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="melissa-petro">Melissa Petro</keyword> is a freelance writer who lives with her husband and two children in New York City.</li><li>In her mid-20s, Petro says she struggled with an alcohol <keyword id="6357421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="addiction">addiction</keyword>. She would drink recklessly and way too much, often racking up a hundred-dollar bar tab in one night.</li><li>When her drinking began to impact her relationships and schoolwork, Petro knew it was time for a change. She signed herself into outpatient rehab and joined a 12-step program.</li><li>Over time, Petro found that she could still make friends and have fun socializing without alcohol — it was challenging at first, but she realized the relationships she was forming while sober were more genuine, and long-lasting.</li></ul>There was a time in my life that nothing could have kept me away from the bar. In spite of the risks to my health, as well as the harm my drinking posed to my community, I spent a good part of my mid-20s getting drunk in bars.My drinking had started clandestinely in high school and continued into college, but it wasn't until grad school that I became your typical bar fly. I was that girl — we all know the one. Before, after and sometimes in lieu of class, you'd find me wherever booze flowed, toddling around in dangerously high heels, skirt hiked up my thighs.I was 26 years old, engaged to a man I'd started dating in high school, and pursuing an expensive degree in creative writing. And yet instead of planning the wedding or working on my book, I spent all my free time at the bar behind a sweating vodka and seltzer, hitting on other people's husbands and interrogating the bartender over the strength of my drink. <h2>Initially, I had fun. But I was reckless when I drank — and my behavior was harmful.</h2>The night of drinking would start respectably enough, but casual getting-to-know-you moments and conversations about schoolwork would devolve as it wore on. Like many people, I used alcohol as a social lubricant, filling awkward pauses with sips. A drink or two and I'd relax. Three drinks in, I'd lose all inhibitions. I call it 'trauma bonding' aka "Let me tell you the worst thing that's ever happened to me! Now, it's your turn..." — it's typical of people when they're drinking. Drunken oversharing may feel like a shortcut to intimacy, but you're likely to forget half of what was said, so you're not really building any kind of long-lasting friendship, and it seriously alienates anyone with a healthier sense of self. The next day, I'd wake up — alone, if I was lucky — my head pounding, heart racing as memories of the night before flashed back to mind. Assuming I hadn't lost it, I'd look down at my phone to find dozens of worried texts and missed calls. At some point I'd call the bar looking for my bank card and discover I'd racked up a hundred dollar tab. <h2><keyword id="6430191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alcoholism">Alcoholism</keyword> is progressive — but help is available.</h2>After months of this, I had just enough sense to call off the wedding. By then, I had alienated myself from most of my classmates and had taken to drinking with strangers I met online. My final semester, I found myself in peril of not graduating. I knew it was time to clean up my act. In March of 2017, I signed myself into outpatient rehab. And I dragged myself into a 12-step meeting that had been recommended months earlier by a sober friend. Prior to this, when I thought <keyword id="51953" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="aa">AA</keyword>, I imagined old men in trench coats, sitting in a church basement underneath a cloud of cigarette smoke. My first meeting was in a synagogue, rather than a church, and when the elevator door opened onto the top floor, I was shocked to find a room full of young women much like myself — attractive, funny, successful, and seriously alcoholic. For the first 15 or so minutes, one woman shared her whole harrowing story. Then, hands flew up, and people took turns. As I listened to their stories, I could relate to the unmanageability drinking had caused in their lives — over the years, I too had lost jobs, destroyed friendships, and endangered my health. Even more than the details, I could relate to the feelings. When I thought of my drunken conduct, I felt frightened, confused, embarrassed and ashamed. <h2>I was lonely. I had to learn to make authentic connections — sober.</h2><div type="image" title="Melissa Petro Petro says that sober socializing was challenging at first, but it has allowed her to form genuine friendships." height="1172" width="1148" msid="77433965" hostid="261"></div>Once sober, I admitted to myself that I'd been unhappy and lonely in my romantic relationship. I'd wanted more, but I didn't want to leave my fiancé because I was afraid of being alone. I wanted friends, too, but I didn't know how to make or keep them. A big part of recovery was getting over my insecurities, and learning to trust others. Initially, I found the connection I was desperate for in those 12-step meetings and, more specifically, among groups of women.After meetings, we'd socialize sans booze at the local diner. I didn't have much in common with some of these women besides our alcoholism — and it felt somewhat tedious, allowing relationships to develop at their own pace — but "fellowship" (as it's called) gave me something to do instead of drinking, and slowly a handful of these people became true friends. <h2>Relationships can be a lot of hard work — especially in the era of social distancing.</h2>In the 13-plus years since drinking, I've learned that authentic relationships require an investment. Sure, it's awkward in the beginning. I still fear rejection. It takes time to discover commonalities, and patience to overlook where you might not connect. It's not always convenient to listen to another person's struggles and when I'm sober, my instinct is to keep my personal business to myself.And yet, the friendships in my life today that I most value are the ones I check in with most frequently. We can't get together over a glass of wine, but in non-COVID times, we can meet over coffee. And as long as social distancing is in order, we can text, talk on the phone, Skype, and Zoom. These connections, more than anything else, have become what I value the most.
