<ul><li>The United States of America decided to withdraw 50 Indian items from duty free benefits. They will now be imported with regular US tariff norms. </li><li>The US-<keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> trade war is likely to hit small and medium-sized businesses in India which are mainly dependent on exports for revenue. </li><li>The decision came in after India announced a hike on custom duties on 29 American products. </li><li>President Trump also commented on India being ‘tariff king’ to signify sour trade relations between the two countries. </li></ul>India’s souring trade relations with the United States took a new turn when the US government decided to revoke duty free privileges on the import of as many as 50 Indian products. The decision came in after India decided to hike the custom duty levied on 29 American products. Surprisingly though, India has been continuously extending the deadlines for the imposition of these the higher duties. In fact, the <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/r5E40dX6oNx5zKJoaukqoL/Govt-delays-imposition-of-retaliatory-tariffs-on-US-goods-ti.html">Finance Ministry</a> recently decided to advance the deadline for the third time in a row by another 45 days till 17 December. Citing section 503(c)(2)(A) of US’ 1974 Act, President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> proclaimed that ‘certain beneficiary developing countries’ have overused the benefits of the Generalised System of Preferences (<keyword id="340326" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSP">GSP</keyword>) in the previous year by crossing the competitive-need limitations. In a proclamation issued by White House, Trump <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/presidential-proclamation-modify-list-products-eligible-duty-free-treatment-generalized-system-preferences/">stated</a> that he may withdraw, suspend or limit the application of the duty free treatment that is accorded to specified articles under the GSP when imported from designated beneficiary developing countries. Indian items pulled out of GSP benefits The list of items withdrawn from tariff-free provisions mainly includes agricultural and handloom goods like areca nuts, processed mangoes, sandstones, leather from buffalo skin, plain weave handloom cotton fabric over a weight of 85 per cotton, carpets and textile floor covers. The imposition of tariffs basically means that it’s going to be more expensive to export them to the US. And, since it will be more expensive, the prices of those products will increase since the trader will shift the burden of the tax onto the consumer. So, if we follow the basic principles of demand and supply, with the commodities getting more expensive, it’s likely that their demand will fall negatively impacting India’s outgoing trade. Impact on India’s small and medium-sized businesses The US was providing India benefits worth $70 million with its GSP - which gives exclusive provisions to export tariff-free products in the United States. Imposition of regular US tariffs on Indian products is likely to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/india-to-raise-duties-on-29-goods-from-us/articleshow/64690730.cms">impact</a> the small and medium-sized business (SMEs) which are dependent on exports. Particularly, Indian handloom and agricultural sectors may have to look for other options to boost exports once tariffs are imposed on their product. It’s not India’s going to stop exporting these products altogether but having to bear regular tariffs which will directly impact export volumes. That being said, an Indian official has <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/GyKMFDPJXeDL0iF9d7wosK/US-revokes-dutyfree-privileges-on-import-of-90-Indian-produ.html">claimed</a> that these products are not a major part of India’s total export, which is worth $5.6 billion, and thereby will not impact the Indian economy much. US-India’s tangled trade relations US and India have been going through a rough phase since the Trump government came into power. Earlier this year, India announced plans to increase the tariff on 29 American goods - mainly nuts, apples and finished metal - as a counter-attack on Trump’s move to increase taxes levied on the import of steel and aluminium. Mis-stating India’s tariff system, Trump called India ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/world-bank-contradicts-trumps-comment-over-higher-tariffs-imposed-by-india-on-american-goods/articleshow/66463430.cms">tariff king</a>’ for levying higher import duties on several American products. The US has also been mulling over penalising India for breaching its call to bring Iranian oil export to zero. Apart from this, India’s recent<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/india-and-russia-to-sign-over-7-billion-defence-deals/articleshow/66077335.cms"> $7 billion defence deal</a> with Russia has put the US on the offensive raising a lot of questions on how the two countries are going to work out their trade relations in the future.

Business has been slow at a Larsen &amp; Toubro Ltd. factory in India that makes parts for nuclear power plants. The Mumbai-based construction company opened the plant in 2012, hoping to profit from government plans to build more reactors in a country where more than 200 million people lack access to electricity. But most of the projects have gone nowhere, and L&amp;T's facility in Hazira is running at one-fifth of capacity. "That's not the best use of resources,, says Senior Vice President Y.S. Trivedi. L&amp;T's factory could soon be humming. On June 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President <keyword id="43440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vladimir-Putin">Vladimir Putin</keyword> agreed that the two countries would work together to expand India's largest nuclear power station. In mid-May, Modi's cabinapproved a plan to add 10 Indian-made reactors with a combined output of 7,000 megawatts, roughly double the country's current nuclear capacity. The world's third-biggest producer of carbon emissions, India sees nuclear power as a way to reduce dependence on coal-burning power plants, which supply almost 60 percent of its electricity. (Nuclear accounts for less than 2 percent at present.) Modi wants to position himself as a leader in the fight against climate change at a time when the global effort is under attack from President Trump. In his June 1 announcement that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris agreement, Trump said the deal favored India and China. A few days later, during a state visit to France, Modi trumpeted India's commitment to the 2015 accord, saying "we will work and walk together with others to leave a gift for future generations., Like Trump, Modi came into office promising to boost local manufacturing, and he wants to use nuclear power to further his "Make in India, campaign. India has 22 reactors, almost all designed by state-owned Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd. (NPCIL) and built by companies such as L&amp;T. "Our domestically designed reactors are the core of our nuclear strategy,, says <keyword id="51931" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="atomic-energy">Atomic Energy</keyword> Secretary Sekhar Basu. "The foreign reactors are add-ons., Government boosterism aside, India is actually a laggard in nuclear technology. World powers banned the country from importing nuclear fuel and technology for civilian purposes for more than three decades as punishment for testing a nuclear weapon in 1974. Although the U.S. lifted the prohibition in 2006, NPCIL is still playing catch-up. Its reactors have 30 percent less capacity than designs from foreign companies and use older, simpler technology. This isn't India's first nuclear push. "Targets have been set, and they've always been missed,, says M.V. Ramana, professor at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia. "They've essentially built almost nothing., One obstacle is a 2010 law that holds companies liable in the event of a nuclear accident. General Electric Co. Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt has said it makes investing in India too risky; Toshiba Corp., owner of reactor maker Westinghouse Electric Co., said in February it needs liability reform before proceeding on six Indian plants. (Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy protection in March.) A 7 billion ($7.9 billion) project involving Areva SA of France has been on hold for almost seven years. To improve India's nuclear know-how, Modi could turn to China for help. But that's an unlikely prospect, says Ramana; the two countries fought a war in the early 1960s and still have unresolved border disputes. That leaves Russia's Rosatom Corp., which designed the reactors for <keyword id="54863" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="KUDANKULAM">Kudankulam</keyword> Nuclear Power Plant, India's largest. Because it's state-owned, Rosatom is less likely to be spooked by India's liability law, passed after work on Kudankulam began in 2002. "There may be no other option besides Russian vendors at this point,, says Vipin Narang, an associate professor of political science at MIT. India's focus on nuclear power is misguided, regardless of whether the reactors are imported or local, says Tim Buckley, an Asia expert at the Cleveland-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. "It's absolutely bizarre that they would bother,, he says, arguing that nuclear power can't compete against lower-cost renewable alternatives such as wind and solar, which now account for close to 16 percent of India's power capacity. L&amp;T expects annual production at its Hazira plant to reach about 40 percent of capacity this year and sees further increases as Modi's plan gains momentum. "We have demonstrated that our technology is robust and safe,, says Trivedi, "and gives more value for money., The bottom line: Modi wants to bolster his green credentials by doubling India's nuclear power capacity.

It’s been decades that India and the United States had mistrust in their ties, even as reconciliation was tried time and again. However, the relationship between the two countries has taken a turn toward cooperation Tuesday, and <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> can claim at least some of the credit. 
 
PM Modi who is on his second visit to US in two years has announced a crucial step in which the Paris agreement to limit greenhouse gases would be ratified. 
 
The two sides have announced that they are also on way to complete the deal in which India will buy six nuclear reactors from Westinghouse by June next year, thereby fulfilling an agreement that was struck between two countries in 2005 by US President George W. Bush. Even though the price is not yet disclosed, more difficult issues like liability have been resolved by both parties. 
 
"We continue to discuss a wide range of areas where we can cooperate more effectively in order to promote jobs, promote investment, promote trade and promote greater opportunities for our people, particularly young people, in both of our countries," said US President Barack Obama. 
 
Modi had said that "The United States is well aware of the talent that India has." 
 
"We and the United States can work together to bring forward this talent, and use it for the benefit of mankind and use it for the benefit of innovations and use it to achieve new progress," he added. 
 
Modi has also made clear that the deep rooted standoffishness in India's colonial experience needs to be cleared off so that there can be stronger ties with Washington. 
 
Talking of Trump’s role in this whole setup, he had announced his "America First" views and his unorthodox campaign, and even though he has said little about India, Indian officials are worried with his vows to tighten immigration policies, which is why Modi wants to get as much as he can out of Obama's last months in the office. 
 
Trump has also vowed to "cancel" the Paris climate agreement if he becomes the PM, but since Modi has given his word, and the accord is on its way to become legal, he would now not be able to legally withdraw the agreement for four years. 
 
Another reason US and India have grown so close is that even though Pakistan was formally an ally of the United States, US officials have said that made clear that India has displaced Pakistan in US interests and hearts. 
 
"We have much more to do with India today than has to do with Pakistan," Defense Secretary Ash Carter had said in April. "There is important business with respect to Pakistan, but we have much more, a whole global agenda with India, agenda that covers all kinds of issues."

However, US companies like Abbot and Boston Scientific, have <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/healthcare/biotech/healthcare/india-rejects-u-s-request-on-price-caps-on-medical-devices-sources/articleshow/63987665.cms">not been happy</a> about limiting their profits from India’s $5 billion medical device market. Even though the price regulation came into effect in 2017, the issue is yet to be resolved. 'Howdy, Modi!' India's prime minister joins Trump at rally and touts him as a 'true friend'

Kolkata-based Te-A-Me Teas, a tea company, has sent a huge consignment of 6,000 bags of famous <keyword id="1434396" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Assam-green-tea">Assam green tea</keyword> to US presidential candidate <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>, along with a message that it is never too late to "cleanse yourself". 
 
"Dear Mr Trump, namaste from India, we are sending you lots and lots of natural green tea. It fights against harmful free radicals. It helps purify mind and body and regain a healthy balance. It has also proven to make people smarter. Please Mr Trump drink the tea. For your sake, for America's sake, for the world's sake," Kolkata-based Te-A-Me Teas said in a video, explaining the thought behind sending green tea consignments to Trump Towers in NYC. 
 
"The message is simple: Mr Trump, it's never too late to cleanse yourself," the company added. "Donald Trump has the whole world worried... we can't stop him, but maybe we can change him." 
 
The company did not declare the cost of this consignment, which is sufficient for four years, if Trump drinks three cups a day. 
 
"We believe that green tea with all its goodness can help Mr Trump and in turn benefit his country and the world at large," an official of the company added. 
 
"If he needs more, we'll be happy to provide. Green tea has been proven to fight against harmful free radicals and cleanse the mind and bodies, helping one regain a healthy balance," he said.
