The <keyword id="2619929" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-consumer-protection-authority" source="Orion">Central Consumer Protection Authority</keyword> (CCPA) has passed an order on violation of consumer rights by e-commerce platform <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword> for allowing sale of domestic pressure cookers in violation to mandatory standards. According to CCPA Chief Commissioner <keyword id="1868624" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nidhi-khare" source="Orion">Nidhi Khare</keyword>, the CCPA has directed Flipkart to notify consumers of all 598 pressure cookers sold on its platform, recall the pressure cookers and reimburse their prices to the consumers and submit a compliance report of the same within 45 days. The company has also been directed to pay a penalty of Rs 1,00,000 for allowing sale of such pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform and violating rights of consumers. The <keyword id="6378065" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central" source="Orion">Central</keyword> government, from time to time, notifies the <keyword id="10524664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="quality-control-orders" source="Orion">Quality Control Orders</keyword> specifying compulsory conformity to a standard and use of standard mark for a product to protect consumers from risk of suffering injury and harm and in the interest of people at large. The <keyword id="13478363" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="domestic-pressure-cooker" source="Orion">Domestic Pressure Cooker</keyword> (Quality Control) order, which came into effect from February 1, 2021, mandates conformity to IS 2347:2017 for all domestic pressure cookers. Therefore, since February 1, 2021, all pressure cookers are required to conform to IS 2347:2017 and due diligence is required to be done whether the pressure cookers are offered for sale online or offline. The CCPA observed that provisions in the 'Flipkart terms of use' such as mandatory use of the words 'Powered by Flipkart' on every invoice of the product and distinguishing sellers as gold, silver and bronze for distribution of various benefits indicates the role played by Flipkart in sale of the pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform. Flipkart admittedly earned a total fee of Rs 1,84,263 through sale of such pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform. It was observed by CCPA that when Flipkart has gained commercially from the sale of such pressure cookers, it cannot alienate itself from the role and responsibility arising out of their sale to consumers. Flipkart to pay Rs 1L fine for selling sub-standard pressure cookers

New Delhi, Jan 23 () The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has come out with quality control norms for domestic pressure cookers with a view to contain import and production of sub-standard products in the country.
 According to a DPIIT notification, domestic pressure cookers would have to conform to the specified standards and bear the standard mark under a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
 The item cannot be produced, sold/traded, imported and stocked unless they bear BIS mark.
 The order will come into force with effect from August 1 this year.
 BIS "shall be the certifying and enforcement authority for the goods," according to the notification.
 However, it added that the order -- Domestic Pressure Cooker (Quality Control) Order, 2020 -- shall not apply to goods or articles meant for export purposes.
 The department has also issued quality control norms for certain steel items and cables.
 The move assumes significance as the government is working to formulate technical regulations, which include safety and quality standards, for over 350 products with a view to cut imports of those non-essential items. RR

When the neighbors called the police to report the incident, the police reportedly declined to intervene in a "family matter." 
While the Lebanese parliament has made efforts in recent years with new laws criminalizing domestic abuse, gender-based violence and domestic abuse remains an ongoing problem. 
Central to the campaign is the slogan, "NUDITY IS A PERSONAL CHOICE ... GETTING BEATEN UP IS NOT."

Sequoia-backed Stove Kraft IPO: The hefty grey market premium is not in sync with what analysts have to say

New Delhi, Apr 21 () Having access to just the bare essentials in isolation is no longer doing the trick for those who shop online as they are now craving for luxuries like hair trimmers, board games and even automatic roti makers amid the ongoing lockdown, a new survey has revealed. The survey by e-commerce company Snapdeal noted that there has been a whopping "24 times" increase in the number of products being added to customers' shopping carts and wishlists, since the nationwide lockdown began on March 25."On average, buyers had nine items in their carts and wishlist," it said, adding that the price of these products range anything between Rs 68 to Rs 18,200. Unlike most online shopping portals that had temporarily stopped taking orders for non-essential items owing to the restrictions imposed during the lockdown, Snapdeal continued to receive and accept orders for all kinds of products, promising to ship them as soon as the restrictions are lifted.Four days after allowing e-commerce firms to also deliver non-essential items such as electronic goods and readymade garments, the government on April 19 said sale of non-essential items will continue to be prohibited during the lockdown period which last week got extended till May 3.Apparel, including t-shirts, bermuda shorts and lounge wear, accounted for nearly 40 per cent of the products being ordered, emerging as the clear favourite in the colossal non-essential category."Reflecting the current lifestyle of users, casual wear items like track pants and nightwear products including top and pyjama sets and nighties figured high on shopping lists. "Open sandals and flip flops priced between Rs 300 - 900 were another popular pick with buyers," said the survey.With salons and parlours shut, it is no surprise that "personal grooming products" are also high in demand at the time, followed closely by "household products".The survey noted that personal grooming products -- hair trimmer, epilator, beauty products and waxing strips -- were picked by over "80,000" customers, while household products saw an "80 per cent growth over usual demand trends". "Pressure cookers, roti makers, egg boilers, kitchen tools like multi-function scissors and automatic mops reflected the efforts on the parts of the users to manage their households with limited or no domestic help," the survey said.The current state of affairs have also given rise to a new category of products - work from home essentials, which have turned out to be a major attraction with customers.These range from headphones, laptop tables, home printers, and wi-fi routers to USB chargers, data cables, extension cords and back support pillows.Lockdown and the great Indian hankering for 'non-essentials' -- pyjama set, roti-maker, ludo and what not According to the survey, over "75 per cent" of the shopping lists were being generated by customers in non-metro cities, with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh topping the charts."Bedsheets, towels, wall decorations, planting accessories and vegetable seeds for home gardens were other items in high demands. Lockdown and Indian hankering for 'non-essentials' -- pyjama set, roti maker, ludo and what not

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image">frankenstoen via flickr</div></div>On Thursday freelance journalist <a href="https://twitter.com/inthefade" target="_blank">Michele Catalano</a>, a former music contributor at Forbes, claimed that six men from <a href="https://twitter.com/inthefade/statuses/362576184787206145">the FBI</a> and/or members of a <a href="https://twitter.com/inthefade?original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Ffbi-shows-up-at-journalists-door-2013-8&amp;tw_i=362729458806960129&amp;tw_p=tweetembed">joint terrorism task force</a> visited her Long Island home over web searches made at her home.
From a <a href="https://medium.com/something-like-falling/2e7d13e54724">blog post</a> by Catalano on Medium:
... my son’s reading habits combined with my search for a pressure cooker and my husband’s search for a backpack set off an alarm of sorts at the joint terrorism task force headquarters.
The FBI denied involvement, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/01/new-york-police-terrorism-pressure-cooker" target="_blank">telling the Guardian</a> that Catalano was "visited by Nassau County police department … They were working in conjunction with Suffolk County police department."
The Nassau PD <a href="https://twitter.com/kashhill/status/362989644817768450">denied</a> that its officers were involved. 
On Thursday night the Suffolk PD <a href="http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/08/pressure-cooker/">said</a> that the Suffolk County Criminal Intelligence Detectives were investigating a tip from Catalano's husband's <a href="https://twitter.com/inthefade/statuses/332652888067301376">former</a> employer that her husband searched the terms ‘pressure cooker bombs’ and ‘backpacks’ on his work computer.
So it seems that the surprise visit, combined with the <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/31/opinion/schneier-nsa-trust/index.html">mistrust</a> sown by widespread domestic surveillance, led Catalano to <a href="https://twitter.com/inthefade/statuses/362661060437737472">misconstrue</a> what spurred the visit from authorities.

<a href="http://openareas.tumblr.com/post/57110075747/clarification-and-update">In an update</a>, Catalano said that what she initially claimed "was the story as we knew it with the information we were told." 
Interestingly, she still holds to the assertion that her the web searches made from her home were inspected, saying that the visitors "led [her husband] to believe it was solely from searches from within our house."
So at the very least, it appears that the initial story — that the FBI visited Catalano's home because of her son's reading habits, her searches about pressure cookers, and her husband's searches for backpacks — has been proven false.

"The difference is really a question of who, if anyone, the Boston suspects were really in touch with and who, if anyone, may have been directing what they were trying to do and successfully did," Wittes said.
The Fort Hood shootings in 2009, where US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan is accused of killing 13 soldiers and military support personnel, unfolded in a similar gray area between domestic and international militancy.
Hasan, born in the United States to Palestinian parents, was said to have had contacts with Anwar al-Awlaqi, the American-born radical cleric later killed in a US drone strike in Yemen.
Frank Cilluffo, director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University, said there were many examples of people wanting to fight for Al-Qaeda in their own country.
"Specifically, you've had a number of examples and cases where people who were trying to fight overseas have been turned back around to attack their homeland," he added.
The bombs used in Boston, pressure cookers filled with explosives, reflect the methods advocated by Inspire, the English language magazine published by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the movement's Yemeni offshoot, which has also urged aspiring jihadists to launch attacks in their own countries.
Brian Jenkins, author of a Rand study on the profile of jihadists in the United States, said 74 percent of those involved in such plots were American citizens, of which 49 percent were born here and 29 percent were naturalized.
"Many of the jihadists identified in the cases discussed here began their journey toward radicalization on the Internet where they found resonance and reinforcement for their frustration and anger," he wrote.

<div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image">REUTERS</div></div>Following the Westgate Mall Attack, media focus has turned in part to a British woman named Samantha Lewthwaite, nicknamed "The White Widow."
Lewthewaite was the wife of suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay, a man who blew himself up on July 7, 2005, at London's King's Cross subway station killing 26 people - an attack now known as "7/7."
Lewthwaite initially denounced the attack, but then she and her two children disappeared from the U.K. The next surfacing of her was in 2011 when <keyword id="6360004" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kenya">Kenya</keyword>n counterterrorism investigators tracked her down to an apartment in Mombasa, Kenya.
They reportedly found the similar chemicals in that apartment as were used in 7/7 attack, reports <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/journalists/mike-pflanz/" title="Mike Pflanz">Mike Pflanz</a> <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/somalia/9402087/The-hunt-for-the-white-widow.html">of The Telegraph.</a>
Pflanz writes that her mystique has only grown since then:
She has been accused variously of being al-Qaeda's chief financier in the region, funding the recruitment and smuggling of Muslim youth to terror training camps in Somalia, and coaching her own all-women jihadist squad there. She has been linked with senior al-Qaeda commanders' alleged plots to attack Eton College and the Dorchester and Ritz hotels in London.
The Kenya mall attack was allegedly perpetrated by Al Shabaab, a <a href="http://www.cfr.org/somalia/al-shabaab/p18650">Somalian militant group with heavy ties to Al Qaeda</a>, and the same group that to which <a href="http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/445704/20130313/samantha-lewthwaite-widow-jermaine-grant-terror-suspect.htm">Lewthwaite allegedly defected</a>.
<a href="http://news.sky.com/story/1145286/kenya-terrorists-were-dressed-up-as-women">According to Sky News,</a> Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay claims he "saw a picture of a white woman wearing a balaclava and carrying a weapon." A report out of the Huffington Post says that officials<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/09/23/white-widow-samantha-lewthwaite_n_3974085.html?utm_hp_ref=uk"> are investigating</a> whether or not she was involved in the attacks.
<a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/contributors/jamie-dettmer.html">Jamie Dettmer</a> of The Daily Beast <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/09/23/were-americans-among-the-al-shabaab-nairobi-mall-attackers.html">also reports of possible</a> American connections to the grisly attacks:
Arabic-language Twitter account that journalists have used to communicate with the Somali <keyword id="106468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="al-Qaeda">al Qaeda</keyword> affiliate in the past confirmed the names of the Americans. All have Somali-sounding names, and two of them are alleged to be from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in Minnesota, home to a large Somali-American community, from which Al-Shabab has been actively seeking to recruit in the past.
Recruiting Westerners is a relatively new strategy for Al Qaeda and Islamic Militants, only emerging in the last decade or so. Homegrown recruitment was the focus of infamous American-Islamic cleric Anwar Awlaki, who was born in Phoenix and left the U.S. for Yemen.
He started the English-language online Al Qaeda fanzine called "Inspire," aimed at recruiting english-speaking terrorists, ostensibly to wage domestic war in the homeland.
Boston bombers <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dzhokhar_and_Tamerlan_Tsarnaev" title="Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev">Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev</a> allegedly <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/iraq-war-on-terror/topsecretamerica/the-magazine-that-inspired-the-boston-bombers/">downloaded the pressure cooker bomb instructions</a> from that very same magazine.
Citing Congressional reports, <a href="http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/507975/20130922/somalia-al-shabaab-foreign-fighters-jihad-nairobi.htm">Umberte Bacchi of the IB Times writes</a> that Al Shabaab has recruited "more than 40 Muslim Americans and some 20 Canadians."
Of these, he calls <a href="http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/445704/20130313/samantha-lewthwaite-widow-jermaine-grant-terror-suspect.htm">Lewthwaite</a> the "most wanted woman in the world."
Pflanz even notes that "Lewthwaite herself remains free despite the combined attempts of Kenyan, Tanzanian, British and, allegedly, US anti-terror detectives to find her."
