New Delhi: The decision of the <keyword id="20330004" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-Acquisition-Council" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Defence Acquisition Council" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Defence Acquisition Council">Defence Acquisition Council</keyword> (DAC) to accept 10 <keyword id="22515789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-acquisition" source="keywords">capital acquisition</keyword> proposals worth Rs 1.4 trn will not only boost <keyword id="23034601" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-defence-manufacturing" source="keywords">domestic defence manufacturing</keyword> but will contribute to the growth of the <keyword id="20362868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSU-companies" source="keywords">PSU companies</keyword> in the defence sector, highlighted a report by Antique Stock Broking. The report noted that the growth of domestic defence manufacturing in the country has picked up significantly over the last few years and is expected to grow further in the future. It added that the government's focus on enhancing domestic capabilities is evident from its initiatives in FY24, where Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) was accorded to proposals worth approximately Rs 3.61 trillion under various capital procurement categories. These initiatives are in line with the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, which strongly promotes domestic manufacturing. "The government, in FY24, accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to proposals worth approximately INR 3.61 trn under various categories of capital procurement, which promotes domestic manufacturing as per DAP-2020" said the report. A significant milestone highlighted in the report is the remarkable increase in the share of domestic procurement in India's defence sector. The share has improved from 54 per cent in FY19 to 75 per cent in FY24. The report noted that this trend is expected to strengthen further, driven by the fact that more than 99 per cent of the announced proposals are to be sourced from the domestic industry under the "Buy (Indian)" and "Buy (Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured)" categories. "The total share of domestic procurement has seen a phenomenal improvement from 54% in FY19 to 75% in FY24 and is expected to improve further. The report stated that the DAC's (Defence Acquisition Council) approval of proposals worth Rs 1.45 trillion is aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The report further emphasizes that with Rs 1.45 trillion worth of projects already approved in the year-to-date FY25, the <keyword id="20994345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-PSUs" source="keywords">defence PSUs</keyword> are poised for strong growth in the near to long term. "With approval for Rs 1.45 trn worth of projects in YTDFY25, we believe defence PSUs have strong growth opportunities in the near to long term" the report added. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 10 capital acquisition proposals amounting to Rs 1,44,716 crore. Of the total cost of AoNs, 99 per cent is from Indigenous sources under the Buy (Indian) and Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) categories, the Ministry of Defence stated. For the modernisation of the tank fleet of the Indian Army, the proposal for procurement of Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) has been cleared. The FRCV will be a futuristic Main Battle Tank with superior mobility, all-terrain ability, multilayered protections, precision and lethal fires over and real-time situational awareness, the release stated. The AoN was also accorded for procurement of Air Defence Fire Control Radars, which will detect and track aerial targets and provide firing solutions. The proposal has also been approved for Forward Repair Team (Tracked) which has suitable cross-country mobility for carrying out in-situ repair during mechanised operations.

India's telecom equipment manufacturing sales cross ₹50,000 crore under PLI scheme

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to present the <keyword id="6360189" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget" source="Orion">Union Budget</keyword> for financial year 2024-25 on July 23. ICC President Ameya Prabhu said protective measures are needed for the growth of domestic industry in sectors including steel, solar battery, aluminum, and lithium cells. "There is a need for rationalisation of <keyword id="20454068" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="customs-duty" source="keywords">customs duty</keyword> in these specific sectors in a holistic manner. Huge potential is there to boost domestic manufacturing and make India a global hub for manufacturing," Prabhu said. He added that levies on raw materials impact domestic players particularly the downstream firms. He also asked for correction in inverted duty structure by cutting down duty on mixed petroleum gas from 5 per cent to 2.5 per cent. "To boost domestic manufacturing, there is a need to increase duty on polymers - polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene and polyesters to 10 per cent. This will help in reducing import dependency and will drive India towards self-sufficiency in the petrochemical manufacturing segment," Prabhu said. Talking about the importance of the aluminium foil sector, the President said the domestic industry has been facing severe losses as there is anti-dumping duty on raw materials whereas the finished goods are not subject to any duties on imports from China. "This dual effect has resulted in extensive net losses to the companies that have made significant investments into this industry," Prabhu noted. On the taxation side, the chamber has suggested setting up a commission to review the Income Tax Act 1961 in its entirety and simplify the provisions. "This is an old Act. Every year in the <keyword id="6358021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget" source="Orion">Budget</keyword>, amendments are made which has made this Act complex to understand. These amendments have resulted in many anomalies which in turn have given rise to a large number of legal cases," the chamber has said. Prabhu further recommended the government not to impose tax on dividends. He added that during his tenure so far the ICC has spread its wings further nationally and internationally and become a truly world-class chamber. "We have opened 25 chapters globally in countries including New Zealand, the US, Europe, Australia, Korea and Middle East nations," he said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.40 and moved in the range of 83.34 and 83.44 against the greenback during the session. The local unit finally settled at 83.43 (provisional) against the dollar, registering a rise of 3 paise from its previous close. The rupee had settled 3 paise lower at 83.46 against the dollar on Thursday. Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said the rupee gained on a weak US dollar and a decline in crude oil prices. However, weak domestic markets and FII outflows capped sharp gains. The weak dollar was attributed to the US Federal Reserve's decision to keep the key interest rate unchanged for the sixth consecutive time, citing slower progress on the inflation front. Choudhary further said the rupee is expected to trade with a slight negative bias on weak domestic markets and selling pressure from foreign investors. However, a weak tone and a soft US dollar may support the rupee at lower levels. "Traders may remain cautious ahead of non-farm payrolls report and ISM services PMI data from the US today. Encouraging non-farm payrolls may support the dollar while dismal data may weigh on the greenback. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.20 to Rs 83.60," he added. India's <keyword id="20041067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing-PMI" source="keywords">manufacturing PMI</keyword> fell to 58.8 in April 2024 from 59.1 in the previous month, a monthly survey said on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), however, recorded the second fastest improvement in operating conditions in three-and-a-half years supported by buoyant demand. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.10 per cent to 105.07. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, slipped 0.04 per cent to USD 83.64 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex tumbled 732.96 points, or 0.98 per cent, to settle at 73,878.15, and Nifty tanked 172.35 points, or 0.76 per cent, to close at 22,475.85. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday, as they sold shares worth Rs 964.47 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data. If domestic production continues to scale, the economy could gain as much as $10 trillion in value over the next decade, according to Chris Snyder, a US multi-industry analyst at the bank."After decades of offshoring and relying on international supply chains, the pendulum is swinging back toward domestic production," Snyder said in a recent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.morganstanley.com/ideas/thoughts-on-the-market-supply-chain?cid=SM_CORP_YOUTUBE_Morgan+Stanley_20241028&amp;linkId=636499587">episode</a> for Morgan Stanley's "Thoughts on the Market" podcast. "In fact, we believe the US is entering the early innings of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-reindustrializing-how-to-invest-manufacturing-cyclical-quality-2024-7">re-industrialization</a> — a multi-decade opportunity that we size at $10 trillion and think has the potential to restore growth to the US industrial economy following more than 20 years of stagnation," he added.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ismworld.org/supply-management-news-and-reports/reports/ism-report-on-business/pmi/september/">manufacturing sector continued to contract</a> in September, with activity declining for the 22nd month out of the last 23, per the Institute of Supply Management.Still, the sector is showing signs that the US is backing backing away from offshore production. The US's international trade deficit for goods and services declined to $70.4 billion in August, down $8.5 billion from the prior month, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bea.gov/news/2024/us-international-trade-goods-and-services-august-2024">Commerce Department</a>.The Biden administration, meanwhile, has poured billions into its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-semiconductor-chip-production-continue-harris-trump-presidency-arizona-jobs-2024-10">push to increase chip production</a> in the US and boost<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-to-sign-executive-order-to-boost-us-manufacturing-2021-1"> the manufacturing</a> and industrial sectors. As of February of this year, annual investment in new manufacturing facilities hit a record $225 billion, according to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.jec.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/democrats/2024/4/fact-sheet-the-manufacturing-renaissance-that-will-drive-the-economy-of-the-future">memo</a> from the Senate Joint Economic Committee.Shifting production back to the US is expected to be helped along by new technology, like artificial intelligence and more advanced robotics and automation, Snyder said. That could be a boon for "high-tech" sectors in the US, he later added, pointing to the semiconductor, pharmaceuticals, and advanced manufacturing systems industries.Traditional industrial firms — like those in the auto and aerospace sectors — and companies that invest in more sustainable manufacturing are also expected to benefit from the reshoring shift, he added."All told, these businesses should see shorter supply chains, reduced legal and tariff costs, and a more resilient operational structure."The cumulative effects could be "pretty profound" across the US economy, Snyder said, with the boost to industry and manufacturing bound to raise GDP. Reshoring could also potentially undo the US's trade deficit with other economies, Snyder said."The US — with its robust tech sector and innovation ecosystem — is uniquely positioned to leverage technology to revitalize its manufacturing base," he added.

The department for promotion of industry and internal trade (<keyword id="19952901" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DPIIT" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="DPIIT" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="DPIIT">DPIIT</keyword>) on Monday asked <keyword id="19957196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="white-goods" source="keywords">white goods</keyword> manufacturers to participate in large numbers to avail fiscal benefits under the <keyword id="19952889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-linked-incentive" source="keywords">production linked incentive</keyword> scheme for the sector as the response has been muted so far. Additional Secretary in the DPIIT Rajeev Singh Thakur said that the department has again reopened the application window for the PLI (production linked incentive) scheme for white goods (<keyword id="20360726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ACs" source="keywords">ACs</keyword> and LED lights). The application window is open from July 15 to October 12. "In the PLI in white goods scheme, somehow the response has been muted. ...Probably due to various reasons not sufficient response has come. So I request (the industry) to have a look and probably this time, you can consider (applying)," Thakur said at the CII Consumer Electronics and Durables Summit 2024 here. So far, 66 applicants with committed investment of Rs 6,962 crore have been selected as beneficiaries under the PLI scheme. The Union Cabinet had given approval for the PLI scheme for white goods for <keyword id="19914449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="keywords">manufacturing</keyword> of components and sub-assemblies of Air Conditioners (ACs) and LED lights on April 7, 2021. The scheme is to be implemented over a seven-year period, from 2021-22 to 2028-29, and has an outlay of Rs 6,238 crore. He added that the department can hold talks with the industry separately on issues like quality control orders and logistics. Thakur told the industry that the time is right to increase investments into the country as the government has enhanced its capex and taken steps to promote <keyword id="19996629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ease-of-doing-business" source="keywords">ease of doing business</keyword>. The public capex in the last 10 years is growing at a fast pace in areas like highways, expressway, ports, airports and railways, but the commensurate response of the private sector "somehow is not up to the expectation", he said. Earlier speaking at the event, DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia said that a lot of steps have been taken to promote ease of doing business, cutting down compliance burden and decriminalisation of minor offences. The government has also recently approved 12 industrial townships and the industry can look at investing there. He added that capital availability is not an issue now and the government has also provided protection to the industry from predatory imports. Schemes like PLI and semiconductor mission have been rolled out to promote manufacturing and "now we want the industry" to ensure that they have necessary collaborations in place for technology and investments. The industry should do collaborations not only to target the domestic market but also become part of global value chains. "That is an expectation we are having from the entire industry and I think industry will rise to meet these expectations... We have a huge demographic dividend and the industry should take advantage of this otherwise we will miss it," Bhatia added. He also said that there is no paucity of adequate skilled labour in the country and logistics costs too are coming down. On logistics, he cited examples of Amazon and Flipkart selling goods in the remotest part of the country. "I don't think industry should look at the current domestic demand only for collaborations. They should look at the future and export market also in addition to the domestic market," he said, adding expenditure on research and development is "abysmally" low and that needs to be enhanced. The company recorded a 6% market share in the Indian smartphone market in 2023. Experts have said that there is a definitive trend of Apple attracting many first-time users for its newly launched iPhones in India, alongside the strong sales of previous-generation devices.
