Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company said that the company is on track to reach 230 to 260 million subscribers by fiscal 2024. "Adding 7.9 million Disney+ subscribers in the quarter and total subscriptions across all our DTC offerings exceeding 205 million once again proved that we are in a league of our own," Chapek said in a statement late on Wednesday. Across all of Disney's streaming services (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+), total subscriptions exceeded 205 million. Hulu contributed 45.6 million subscriptions this quarter and ESPN+ added 1 million to reach 22.3 million subscribers. The Walt Disney Company reported earnings for its second fiscal quarter that ended April 2. Revenues for the quarter grew 23 per cent to $19.25 billion and earnings of 25 cents per share. However, the company took a $1 billion hit for the amount due to a customer to early terminate license agreements for film and television content delivered in previous years in order for the company to use the content primarily on our direct-to-consumer services. Disney+ adds 7.9 mn new subscribers as Netflix sees a dip in numbers

But for a company like Disney whose primary business is content, eating losses is not feasible in the long-term. It’s why the company brought back Bob Iger from retirement and asked him to course-correct – Iger’s first action was to lay out a $5.5 billion cost-cutting plan. While Disney lost IPL to Reliance’s Viacom18 before Iger was brought back, it did not really make much from its subscribers in India – according to the company’s December 2022 quarter results, Disney+ Hotstar subscribers contributed $0.74 per user per month on average, significantly lower than the $5.95 contribution from Disney+ subscribers in the US and Canada. The Disney+ Hotstar service is available only in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Netflix, which is far more expensive than Disney+ Hotstar in India, reported an average revenue per member of $7.69 in the Asia Pacific region. This is after a 25% reduction in its subscription prices, which now start from as low as ₹149 per month for the most basic plan, translating to ₹1,788 per year. Netflix’ top-tier plan costs ₹7,788 per year. In contrast, the most expensive Disney+ Hotstar plan costs ₹1,499 per year. Essentially, Disney+ Hotstar’s most premium plan is still cheaper than Netflix’ most basic plan. On the other hand, Viacom18, which bagged the lucrative IPL streaming rights for ₹23,758 crore, will provide 4K streaming for free via the JioCinema app. The way forward for Disney+ Hotstar is aggressive investments in creating original content, according to Taurani. However, it needs to click with subscribers who were so far used to HBO’s popular catalogue. Without HBO and IPL, 15 million subscribers could flee Disney+ Hotstar in 2023

This is after a discount of ₹50, which suggests that once the offer period ends, the price could be adjusted to ₹99 per month. The ₹49 plan gives access to the entire library of content on Disney+ Hotstar, including movies, TV, live sports and Hotstar-exclusive content. Only one device login is supported, though, and the resolution is limited to HD (720p). The plan is ad-supported, so you will see commercials while streaming content. The merger deal will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level", said Iger at a Morgan Stanley investor conference earlier this week. "We had an opportunity to align with Reliance, which is obviously the company that has done very well there and one that we respect. And in doing so, end up owning part of a bigger media company. And we believe that, that not only should benefit us in terms of the bottom-line, but derisk us as well there," he said. Last month, Walt Disney Co. and Reliance Industries announced signing of binding pacts to merge their media operations in India. Under the deal, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent and Disney will have 36.84 per cent in the JV, which will create India's leading media company that will house two streaming services and around 120 television channels. "We wanted to stay in India. We made a big investment in India when we purchased the assets of 21st Century Fox. We are one of the biggest media companies in India. But even though it is the most populous country in the world, we felt we want to be there because of that, we also know that there are challenges in that market," he said. Iger said, the merger will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level". "So, it's kind of the best of both worlds. We stay in the market at a significant level. We have a very good partner in Reliance, and we get to have a chance of growing a business and lowering the risk of doing so," he added. The transaction values the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (USD 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance has also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony, and Netflix. Its OTT platform Disney + Hotstar has seen its paid subscriber base decline from around 55 million to 40 million in the first quarter of FY24 because of Reliance's <keyword id="19985346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-cinema" source="keywords">Jio Cinema</keyword> winning exclusive rights for live sports. The combined entity will have the largest OTT subscriber base. Disney + Hotstar was launched in India in 2020, post the acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox at a valuation of USD 71.3 billion, thereby taking over the operations of Star India and Hotstar. It housed entertainment and cinema channels such as StarPlus and StarGold as well as sports channels like Star Sports. While Disney + Hotstar rapidly increased its subscriber base initially with the streaming rights of cricket matches (IPL, World Cup), it lost the bid for the digital streaming rights in 2023-27 cycle, which was won by Reliance-backed Viacom18 for USD 720 billion, 12.92 per cent higher than what Star India had paid on an average per match value. Media ventures of Reliance are currently housed in Network 18, which owns TV18 news channels as well as a plethora of entertainment (under the 'Colors' brand) and sports channels. Merger with Reliance would boost company's profits and reduce risk in India: Disney CEO Bob Iger

The report predicts that India’s AVOD market will double from $1.1 billion in 2021 to $2.4 billion in 2026. However, it also predicts similar growth for SVOD from $0.8 billion to $2.1 billion. The overall OTT space in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 20% to reach $13-15 billion over the next decade. Advertisement, subscription and a wide content library -- future of OTT should be hybrid Netflix’s struggle in India points to the beginning of a new era. After Netflix introduces ads, India’s OTT ecosystem will never be the same. Netflix and Amazon Prime are the only two mainstream platforms in India without ads now. Experts are confident that Amazon Prime will continue to hold its ground and not follow Netflix’s suit. “Amazon Prime is unlikely to follow the AVOD format as the OTT service is a bundled service and comes along with a faster delivery for Amazon’s e-retail channel, almost like a deal sweetener. Also, Amazon has deep pockets and is under no pressure to create profits independently for this service,” N Chandramouli, CEO of brand intelligence and data insights firm TRA Research told Business Insider India. Chandramouli thinks that the OTT landscape will continue to have both SVOD and AVOD formats, and a combination of the two. <keyword id="959269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott-platform" source="Orion">OTT platform</keyword> Disney+Hotstar has been able to gain an edge here. However, both formats will have their base and both are likely to exist side-by-side,” he added. But it’s not only the SVOD players who’ll make the switch but AVOD players will too. MX Player, which has 34% market share as per CLSA, has been operating on an AVOD model. A month ago, it moved to a hybrid model and launched its annual subscription plan MX Gold at ₹299. Lloyd Mathias, business strategist and independent director said that video streaming platforms will increasingly move to AVOD. “Despite a growing OTT market, a 100% dependence on subscription revenue may not suffice for OTT platforms. While Netflix, Amazon Prime all started as subscription VOD platforms, in an increasingly competitive marketplace, they will find it difficult to sustain without ad revenue. There is so much content available free through a combination of user-generated content (UGC) and through AVOD platforms like YouTube, that consumers are spoilt for choice,” Mathias told Business Insider India. In the long run, Mathias said that a hybrid model may be the most viable for both consumers and content providers. “OTTs can hook users with free content (AVOD) and then entice them to pay for premium (SVOD) content along the way. The revenues from a hybrid stream will also make it possible for the OTTs to commission and carry exclusive high-quality content,” said Mathias.

<ul><li>The Indian government’s new IT rules for over-the-top (OTT) platforms ask for a three-tier grievance system and content classification.</li><li>While this may create a forum where users can air their complaints, it could also result in an uptake of content related disputes in India.</li><li>The likes of <keyword id="2739840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotstar">Hotstar</keyword>, <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, <keyword id="2976376" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime-Video">Amazon Prime Video</keyword> and others will have to steer around India’s diverse sensibilities, cultures and beliefs.</li></ul>Until now content on OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar and others were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/news/self-regulation-code-adopted-by-disney-hotstar-amazon-prime-and-other-ott-platforms-what-is-this-code/articleshow/78009955.cms">largely unregulated</a>, allowing them to cater to varied sensibilities. However, content on OTT platforms has also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/tandav-controversy-fir-filed-against-the-shows-director-and-amazon-india-head-of-content-in-up/articleshow/80329036.cms">courted controversy</a> time and again. Significant compliances have been introduced for OTT platforms such as certification of films and web-series, and parental locks. A 3-tier grievance redressal mechanism has been prescribed for OTT platforms as well as news portals. This might eventually lead to a substantial increase in content related disputes in India. The three levels of addressing complaints OTT platforms and news portals will have to formulate a robust three-tier grievance redressal mechanism. The rules provide for two levels of self regulation. First, self-regulation by the platform through a grievance redressal officer and, second, by an institutional self-regulatory body comprising industry experts and headed by a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge or other independent eminent personality in the relevant field. This is followed by the third level of oversight through an interdepartmental committee constituted by the government. This committee will hear appeals arising out of decisions taken at level two, and if a complaint is referred to the committee by the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/ott-platforms-hotstar-netflix-and-even-news-content-providers-will-now-be-regulated-by-the-ib-ministry/articleshow/79166864.cms">Ministry of Information and Broadcast</a> (MIB). The maze of India's many moods While an institutional self-regulation mechanism may enable citizens to have their concerns heard through a formal process within definite time frames; the oversight mechanism by the government certainly tightens the government’s grip on the overall operations of OTT platforms. A big challenge for OTT platforms, while dealing with complaints, will be to steer around diverse sensibilities, cultures and beliefs of the Indian audience and their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/netflix-is-pushing-back-against-a-legal-petition-seeking-the-removal-of-an-unflattering-reference-to-an-assassinated-indian-prime-minister-in-sacred-games-its-first-indian-original-series/articleshow/65327640.cms">demands for different genres of content. </a> It is also essential to not overlook the fact that content curation of OTT players offer ‘video-on-demand’ services, and curate content based on demands of viewers, often analysed basis viewership data and trends. While a certain type of content is perceived as offensive by a certain section of public, it is popular amongst another. It is unclear as to how OTT platforms are expected to practically redress grievances from different users. India’s new rules for OTT platforms could lead an increase in content-related disputes

<ul><li>After the pandemic, many of us were stuck within the four walls of our houses and OTT platforms like <keyword id="128682" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="netflix" source="Orion">Netflix</keyword>, Amazon Prime and <keyword id="2739840" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hotstar" source="Orion">Hotstar</keyword> sometimes became the only source of entertainment in our lives.</li><li>The pandemic also gave a push to the regional <keyword id="9056838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott-industry" source="Orion">OTT industry</keyword> and saw the birth of native language streaming players like Hoichoi, aha, Sun NXT, Planet Marathi, Koode, and City Short TV.</li><li>As per experts, the regional OTT players have already captured 50% of the OTT market in less than 3-4 years.</li></ul>Kaiser, the homicide detective who tries to deal with double murders and his own demons side by side; then there is Three Roses – with young girls who are in the middle of to-be-married mess in the complex Indian juxtaposition of tradition and independence. Yes, you have guessed it right. They are all topics of superhit web series but you can’t find them on Netflix, Prime or even Disney Hotstar – they are from Hoichoi, Bengali OTT and aha, a Telugu and Tamil OTT, respectively. Apart from regional cinema taking over <keyword id="143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bollywood" source="Orion">Bollywood</keyword>, a silent revolution is underway where regional OTTs are taking away the eyeballs of Indians – by offering them quality content in their mother tongue. And, there are a lot of these. Of the total <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/a-cred-like-platform-is-what-indian-ott-users-want-to-juggle-multiple-subscriptions/articleshow/92570894.cms">60 OTT </a>platforms in India, around 12 of them are exclusively regional across languages like — Sun NXT, Planet Marathi, Koode, and City Short TV, which is a hyperlocal content OTT. One movie, every week According to a FICCI-EY <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/brandwagon/regional-ott-on-the-rise-as-subscribers-choose-native-language-over-hindi/2272860/">report</a>, the share of regional language consumption on OTT platforms will cross 50% by 2025 from the 30% share it held in 2019. As per FICCI-EY though, regional consumption is expected to surpass Hindi, which is predicted to touch a 45% consumption rate. But a few players are confident that it has already hit this number. “The regional OTT market today probably is 50% already of the total OTT market size in India, including all regional languages. It is set to grow faster than Hindi for sure,” Ajit Thakur, CEO of Telugu and Tamil OTT platform aha told Business Insider India. The OTT, which is adding one movie every week, has touched 10 million monthly active users (Maus) in two years. Its app saw 30 million downloads. It has also generated $2 million in non-subscription <a href="https://www.afaqs.com/news/media/telugu-ott-platform-aha-to-rely-on-avod-to-break-even">revenue </a>in the last six months and is considering adding gaming onto its platform and becoming a super app. Aha also intends to target Tamil-speaking viewers as well after winning the hearts of the people who speak the fourth most spoken <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-45902204">language </a>in India and also one of the top 10 fastest-growing <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-45902204">languages </a>in America. The magic price point Apart from the content, the price points of these OTTs are attractive too — as it’s akin to subscribing for a regional TV channel pack as opposed to the full range with all genres and offerings across languages – like Netflix, Prime, Disney Hotstar or even Zee. Hoichoi however has ‘eased’ its subscription with a syndication deal with mainstream OTT players such as MX Player and Amazon Prime. Hoichoi, one of the earliest regional OTT platforms to launch in India, is trying to capture the 250 million Bengali speakers across the world. “The generic OTT market has grown at least 30-50% over the year and we've all outpaced that industry by a fair margin. We've got about 120 odd shows, in addition to about 600-700 movies. In fact, April, May and June were bigger than COVID months for us,” Vishnu Mohta, co-founder of the Bengali streaming platform told Business Insider India. Its extensive content library remains unmatched in the OTT universe. The show became the most-watched Marathi series on OTT and trended across seven countries – thanks to the state’s extensive expat population. “We launched 13 Planet Marathi originals and have another 24 planned out over the next year. Our viewership comes from India and across the world. There has been an increase in the stickiness of the content, with time spent by users increasing almost 350% after Raanbaazaar’s release,” said Akshay Bardapurkar, founder of Planet Marathi. In the meanwhile, top OTTs haven’t been ignoring these viewers either. In fact most of them release regional movies and shows with audio and subtitle options – thereby ‘extending’ the reach of regional content to non-regional players as well. The best example in this list is the recently launched Modern Love Hyderabad which has an original Telugu show dubbed across five languages including Hindi and English, for those who want to catch the flavour of the show in their own language. ZEE5 too has <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/corporate/story/zee5-plans-to-triple-investment-in-tamil-telugu-content-in-2022-328762-2022-04-05">tripled </a>its investment into regional content this year and international player <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/netflix-on-the-lookout-for-regional-language-content-in-2022/article37835172.ece">Netflix </a>is also looking to deeper inroads in India by zooming in on regional market — but whether they would be able to win the war in every regional turf across India is left to be seen – as India has 121 official <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/more-than-19500-mother-tongues-spoken-in-india-census-5241056/">languages </a>and 19,500 mother tongues.
