With one more people dead in <keyword id="109597" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="udalguri" source="Orion">Udalguri</keyword> district, the death toll rose to eight in the ongoing pre-monsoon <keyword id="48088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="floods" source="Orion">floods</keyword> and landslides in <keyword id="6354915" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="assam" source="Orion">Assam</keyword>, where over four lakh people have been affected in 26 districts so far, officials said on Tuesday. Officials in the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that in the last 24 hours, one person died in western Assam's Udalguri district, while seven people had died earlier in the floods and landslides in <keyword id="385380" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dima-hasao" source="Orion">Dima Hasao</keyword> and Lakhimpur districts. Unofficial report from <keyword id="71093" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cachar" source="Orion">Cachar</keyword> district, however, said that four people, including a child and two middle-aged men, were washed away in different rivers. An ASDMA bulletin said that at least 4,03,352 people, including 80,659 children and 1,39,541 women, have been affected and around 1,900 houses have been either partially and fully damaged in 1,089 villages under 26 districts. Over 39,558 people have taken shelter in 89 relief camps. The worst-affected districts include, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hojai, <keyword id="322513" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nagaon" source="Orion">Nagaon</keyword>, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath and Lakhimpur. The situation in the hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Dima Hasao district remained critical on Tuesday as rain continued to batter the mountainous region, affecting the Lumding-Badarpur single line railway route. NFR officials said that uninterrupted rains coupled with the difficult terrain severely affected the restoration and repair work, which might take several weeks. The Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam is the only route to connect Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country. This rail link has been cut off for the past four days.

Over four lakh people affected as pre-monsoon rains trigger floods in Assam

(Eds: Adds details) Guwahati, Jun 3 () With a single-day record of 269 cases, Assam's COVID-19 tally crossed the 1,800-mark on Wednesday, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Breaching the 1,600, 1,700 and 1,800 marks in a single day, the state reached the total of 1,830 cases by recording 158 new ones in the evening, 51 in the afternoon and 60 in the morning, he added. Among the 158 new cases reported in the evening, there are two air travellers, 59 are from Dhubri, 30 from Dima Hasao, 20 from Hojai, 14 each from Nagaon and Biswanath, 10 from Dibrugarh, three from Kamrup, two each from Karimganj and Udalguri, one each from Cachar and Lakhimpur, Sarma said. Of the 51 cases reported in the afternoon, 28 are from Dhubri, 13 from Darrang, five from Karimganj, three from Sonitpur and two from Lakhimpur. Of the 60 new cases reported in the morning, 38 are from Dhubri, 18 from Golaghat and four from Nagaon, he added. Dhubri recorded the highest number of 125 cases during the day and was followed by Dima Hasao (30), Hojai (20), Golaghat and Nagaon (18 each), Bishwanath (14), Darrang (13), Dibrugarh (10), Karimganj (seven), Kamrup, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur (three each), Udalguri (two) and Cachar (one). Meanwhile, 76 patients were cured and released from various hospitals, taking the number of discharged patients in the state to 413. Thirty-nine patients were released from Sonapur Civil Hospital, 10 from Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College Hospital, seven from Dima Hasao Civil Hospital, five each from Lakhimpur Civil Hospital and Golaghat Civil Hospital, four from Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, three from Jorhat Medical College Hospital, two from Silchar Medical College Hospital and one from Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital. Of the 1,830 cases, 1,410 are active, while 413 people have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals, four persons have died and three have migrated out of the state, the minister said. Meanwhile, the third flight under the Vande Bharat Mission was scheduled to arrive at the Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport from Ukraine's Kiev past midnight, an Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson said. A repatriation flight from Russia, carrying 37 passengers, arrived past midnight and another from Kuwait with 155 passengers arrived on May 29. Thirty of these air travellers have tested positive for COVID-19. Altogether 66 air passengers have tested positive for the disease so far in the state since flight operations resumed on May 25. Assam records highest single-day spike in COVID cases; tally 1,830

(Eds: Adds fresh cases) Guwahati, May 23 () Assam surpassed its previous biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 60 fresh cases being reported on Saturday, taking the total tally to 319, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The state had till now recorded its biggest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases on Friday, when 49 people had tested positive for <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>. Fifty-three fresh cases were reported on Saturday afternoon while seven people tested positive for COVID-19 in the morning, taking the total number of cases reported in the last 24 hours to 109. "Fifty three new #COVID19 + cases confirmed - 44 from Sarusajai Quarantine Centre, 7 from Dima Hasao district and 2 from Cachar," Sarma tweeted. Fifty of the 60 fresh cases were reported from Sarusajai quarantine centre in Guwahati and one from a quarantine facility in Dhubri district. "Seven people are found to be #COVID19 +. 6 of them are from Hojai but are in Sarusajai quarantine centre. One is from Dhubri but in quarantine," Sarma tweeted earlier in the day. 109 corona cases reported in Assam in last 24 hour, May 23

Guwahati, Jun 5 () Assam crossed the 2,200-mark in COVID-19 cases after 128 persons tested positive on Friday, Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. With this, the total number of cases in Assam reached 2,243. The state has 1,727 active cases, Sarma said in a tweet. The new cases were reported from Dhubri (37), Dima Hasao (24), Darrang (13), Karimganj (9), Hailakandi (8), Cachar, Baksa, Nagaon (7 each), Sonitpur (5), Udalguri (3), South Salmara and Dhemaji (2 each), Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang (1 each). During the day, 50 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals. Of the total 2,243 cases, four have died, while 509 have been cured, Sarma said. Besides, three more patients have migrated to other states, the minister said. Meanwhile, Sarma inaugurated a chemotherapy facility at the Assam Medical College and Hospital. "Pleased to share that I inaugurated the chemotherapy facility at Assam Cancer Care Foundation at AMCH, Dibrugarh in presence of my colleagues. Assam reports 128 new COVID-19 cases

Guwahati, Jul 5 () The Assam government on Sunday ordered most of the departments to shut their offices in the state secretariat complex and work from field units and directorates for a week after four employees working there tested positive for COVID-19. Assam Commissioner and Secretary (Secretariat Administration) M Angamuthu told that four employees of the 'Janata Bhawan' complex have tested positive on Saturday and Sunday, forcing the authorities to take the drastic step for one week. "After witnessing four cases in just two days, we decided to do everything possible to stop the spread of the virus in the Secretariat complex. We are doing complete sanitisation of the Janata Bhawan campus on Sunday as well as the employees' residential areas," he added. As COVID-19 positive cases were reported among the working officials, it has been decided to restrict the functioning of the departments in Janata Bhawan from July 6- 12, Angamuthu said. "We have around 3,000 people working in different departments and offices inside the secretariat. With the restrictions in place, we are expecting only about 500 people to come inside the complex in the next week," he added. For this, only the offices of the chief minister, chief secretary and all ministers have been allowed to function for the next one week with "skeletal staff" as per the requirements and needs, the order stated. A few important departments, including home and political, revenue and disaster management, general administration, secretariat administration, food and civil supplies, health and family welfare, and finance, have also been allowed to function from the complex. "All senior officers of the rank of Commissioner and Secretary and above shall attend office from Janata Bhawan. Other departments can function from their respective directorates or from field establishment or from home," the order by Angamuthu said. Already, a two-week lockdown from June 28 to July 12 is underway across Kamrup Metropolitan district, which primarily comprises the Guwahati city. Most depts in Assam secretariat to remain shut after 4 employees test COVID-19 positive

Guwahati, Jul 7 () Assam's West Karbi Anglong district administration has announced total lockdown for a week from Wednesday, becoming the third district in the state to impose restrictions to prevent spread of coronavirus. Deputy Commissioner Syed Isfaqur Rahman in an order issued on Tuesday imposed total lockdown under the Disaster Management Act in the Municipal Board areas of Hamren, Baithalangso and Donkmokam and also in areas under Kheroni police station from 7 p.m of July 8 till 7 a.m of July 15. The weekend lockdown, already in force since July 27, will continue beyond July 15 in the Municpality areas and sub-urban areas. Kamrup (Metro), under which Guwahati city falls and has reported a high number of 3,891 cases since June 24, had imposed shutdown since June 28 while Dima Hasao district imposed it from July six for two weeks. Establishment of the Deputy Commissioner, including Treasury establishments, defence, police and security, fire and emergency services, disaster management, electricity, water sanitation, Municipal staff required for emergency services will be allowed to function during the lockdown, the order stated. Hospitals and retail medical outlets, government officers and employees who are employed under Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, bank branches with skeletal services have been allowed to function while ATMs shall operate. Quarantine facilities shall operate and ongoing construction works related to medical care and construction for COVID care centres are allowed. Print and electronic media, including newsaper distribution, are allowed but it is advised that minimum number of persons should come out in the open. Power generation, transmission and distribution units and services shall continue with persons having specially assigned duties being allowed to come out while vehicles of health, fire, law and order and emergency services are allowed. Telecommunications, internet services, broadcasting and cable services, IT and IT enabled services allowed to work from home with emergency repair crew allowed movement subject to prior permission and passes from appropriate authority. (Eds: With Updates) Guwahati, May 28 () The number of COVID-19 cases in Assam crossed the 800 mark with 48 people testing positive for the disease on Thursday, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. In total, 831 cases have been reported in the northeastern state so far, of which 737 are active cases, four have died, three migrated and 87 have recovered and discharged from hospitals. Sarma, in a tweet, said, "Thirty-thee new cases of COVID-19. Ten in Nagaon, eight in Kamrup-M, seven in Cachar, one each in Hojai, Dima Hasao, two each in Karimganj, Hailakandi, two to be ascertained." Fifteen new cases were reported this morning with 11 from Kamrup (Metro), three from Dibrugarh and one from Lakhimpur. Assam saw a significant increase in COVID-19 cases after inter-state movement through by road and train was allowed during the lockdown. In total, 444 coronavirus cases have been detected this week so far. 73 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in Assam, total count 856

Guwahati, Jun 17 () Assam reported 95 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the state's total tally to 4,605, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Of the fresh cases, 21 are from Jorhat, 20 from Golaghat, 12 from Hailakandi, six each from Kamrup and Dibrugarh, seven from Karbi Anglong, four each from Dhemaji, Barpeta, Cachar, three from Bongaigaon, two each from Nagaon and Udalguri and one each from Dima Hasao and Sonitpur, while the location of two are yet to ascertained, he said. The minister said 231 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday, taking the total number of those discharged to 2,642 which is higher than the number of active cases. The recovery rate in the state has climbed to 57 per cent, he said. The number of active cases stood at 1,953 while three persons have migrated out of the state. The state has so far reported eight deaths, he said. A second testing laboratory at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), the twelfth in the state, was inaugurated on Wednesday. The new VRDL lab with bio-safety cabinet has a capacity of conducting 400-500 tests daily, Sarma said. The minister also inaugurated a Digital Mammography Radiology Dept at GMCH. Also, Assam Targeted Surveillance Program (ATSP) was launched, Sarma said and termed it a crucial step towards combating COVID-19 effectively. "We aim to conduct more than 50,000 random testings in a week's time, targeting vulnerable areas", the minister said. Under ATSP, swab samples of people working in locations such as truck parking areas, loading and unloading centres, godowns, weighbridges and dhabas will be collected and tested. The staff of hotels used as institutional quarantine will also be tested along with frontline officials like police personnel, Sarma said. ATSP will also cover the family members and co-residents of homes of people who have been released from the institutional quarantine, he said. The health minister visited the Pandu FRU hospital here to monitor COVID-19 testing and said the future course of action for containment of the pandemic in Guwahati shall be based on these test results. The entire exercise was expected to be finished by June 27 and shall involve the deputy commissioners of each district who will ensure availability of adequate facilities, Sarma said. The state has so far tested 2,35,214 swab samples. Sarma also launched the affordable and sterile Viral Transport Media (VTM) kits, RT-PCR kits and RNA isolation kits developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. He congratulated the IIT faculty for developing the kits and said, "We want to identify and contain this disease at an early stage and it is vital that we have all the crucial kits and materials so that our frontline healthcare workers and doctors who are doing a commendable job do not face any hurdle." IIT, Guwahati, Director T G Sitharam said the institute has been at the forefront in the battle against COVID-19 and is supporting the Assam government in the fight. The institute received the request to provide VTM kits from the National Health Mission director and "we immediately acted upon this request and began production of these sterile and affordable kits. 95 new COVID-19 cases in Assam, tally rises to 4,605

(Eds: with fresh updating figures) Guwahati, Jun 4 () The number of COVID-19 cases crossed the 2,000-mark in Assam with the addition of 243 fresh ones on Thursday, after the state recorded the highest single-day spurt of 269 cases the previous day, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The number of positive cases in the state is now 2,073. Since Wednesday, the state has recorded 512 cases. The minister said 85 new cases were recorded on Thursday night, 111 in the evening and 47 in the morning from different districts of the state. Of the 85 new cases, 21 each were reported from Barpeta and Tinsukia, 14 from Dima Hasao, eight each from Dhemaji and Udalguri, five from Kamrup, four from Lakhimpur, three from Kamrup (Rural) and one was reported from Baksa, he said. Of the 111 cases registered in the evening, 46 are from Hojai, 28 from Udalguri, 11 from Kamrup, 10 from Nagaon, five from Morigaon, three each from Nalbari and Goalpara, two each from Golaghat and Jorhat and one case was from Dhubri. Of the 47 cases recorded in the morning, 33 were from Hojai, six from Dhemaji, four from Bongaigaon, three from Barpeta and one was from Baksa, the minister said. Hojai has so far recorded the highest of 79 positive cases among the districts on Thursday. COVID-19 cases cross 2,000-mark in Assam

(Eds: Updating with fresh figures) Guwahati, May 23 () Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asked people not to return to the state unless "absolutely necessary" as 87 more people tested positive for coronavirus, the highest single-day jump, taking the total tally to 346. He also said that the situation in Assam has reached a challenging phase and the government will write to other states to ensure that buses and trucks carrying people without maintaining social distancing are not allowed movement. Seventeen new cases, including two persons coming from Tripura, were reported in the night, in addition to 10 in the evening, 53 in the afternoon and seven in the morning. On Friday, 49 people had tested positive for coronavirus. "17 more #COVID19+ confirmed. 4 from Chirang; 4 from Tinsukia; 1 from Goalpara; 8 test + at SMCH - Cachar (3), Hailakandi (3) &amp; Tripura (2)", the Minister tweeted. Ten new cases were reported in the evening -- four from Morigaon, two from Nalbari and one each from Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat and Jorhat. Among the 53 cases in the afternoon, 44 were from Sarusajai quarantine centre, two from Cachar and for the first time Dima Hasao reported seven persons testing positive. In the morning, seven persons tested positive with six of them from Sarusajai quarantine facility and one from a quarantine centre in Dhubri. Meanwhile, three persons- two from Guwahati Medical College Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital-have recovered and discharged after they tested negative repeatedly. Out of the 346 positive cases, 282 are active, four persons died, three migrated out of the state and 57 have recovered and discharged from the hospital. Assam has so far tested 60,408 samples and out of these 346 persons have tested positive, 54,185 found negative and the remaining results are awaited. The capacity of the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital has been filled and new patients will now be kept at the Kalapahar Hospital which has been declared a COVID hospital and will function as an annexee of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) from today, the Minister told reporters here. GMCH has been kept for serious patients, he said. "The situation in Assam has reached a challenging phase. Assam is not safe and people from other states should not return home, if it is not absolutely necessary," Sarma said. The state government will write to other states to ensure that buses and trucks carrying people without maintaining social distancing are not allowed movement, he said. The minister claimed that the recent increase in the number of cases was mostly due to people not maintaining protocol while travelling by road in crowded vehicles. "There has not been a single positive case among students whose travel was arranged under the supervision of the state government as strict COVID protocols were followed," he said. Around 1,15,920 people have returned to the state from other parts of the country, while 17,895 people have left Assam, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) G P Singh said. Eighteen Shramik special trains have reached Assam from Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Lingampally, Kanpur, Hyderabad and Mumbai, he added. On May 7, the number of positive cases in the state stood at 48. These mostly included people who attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi. New Delhi, Jul 5 () A highest single-day surge of nearly 25,000 cases pushed the COVID-19 tally in India to 6,73,165 on Sunday, with states like Assam and Karnataka imposing selective lockdown and tightening restrictions to check the rising infection. The death toll rose by 613, the highest spike in a day so far, to reach 19,268 in the country. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh. Karnataka and West Bengal recorded their highest single-day jump in cases. The worst affected Maharashtra crossed the grim milestone of two lakh COVID-19 cases, Tamil Nadu's tally reached 1.11 lakh and Delhi too was nearing the one lakh mark. Assam announced a two-week lockdown in Dima Hasao district from Monday the second district in the state after Kamrup Metropolitan, which primarily comprises Guwahati city, where it has been imposed. A two-week lockdown from June 28 to July 12 has been imposed in Kamrup Metropolitan. State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the COVID-19 situation in Guwahati, where 2,741 fresh cases were reported in the last 10 days, is alarming and may worsen if the restrictions imposed are not followed seriously by the people. The country reported 24,850 new cases in a single day, according to the Union government. Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 2,06,619 after a single-day spike of 6,555. With the death of 151 more patients, the state's fatality count rose to 8,822, according to state authorities. Just because there has been no community spread till now doesn't mean it will not occur," state tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said here on Sunday, referring to the COVID-19 situation in capital Thiruvananthapuram. Surendran said the restrictions in force in containment zones would be tightened. Kerala on Sunday reported second highest single day rise of 225 COVID-19 cases, including seven jawans of an Army unit in the state, taking the total to 5,429, the government said. Gujarat reported 725 new coronavirus cases, its highest single-day rise, taking the overall count to 36,123, while in Madhya Pradesh, 326 more people tested positive and its tally rose to 14,930. Odisha's COVID-19 tally has crossed the 9,000 mark with 469 fresh cases, while two more fatalities due to the infection pushed the death toll to 36, a health department official said. According to officials, 60.77 per cent of the patients have recovered so far in the country. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 97,89,066 samples were tested for the disease in the country till July 4, with 2,48,934 of those tested on Saturday. Of the 19,268 deaths reported so far, Maharashtra accounted for 8,671, followed by Delhi (3,004), Gujarat (1,925), Tamil Nadu (1,450), Uttar Pradesh (773), West Bengal (736), Madhya Pradesh (598), Rajasthan (447) and Karnataka (335), according to the Union Health Ministry. The COVID-19 death toll reached 288 in Telangana, 260 in Haryana, 218 in Andhra Pradesh, 162 in Punjab, 127 in Jammu and Kashmir, 89 in Bihar, 42 in Uttarakhand, 34 in Odisha and 25 in Kerala. Jharkhand has registered 17 deaths due to the disease, Chhattisgarh and Assam have reported 14 each, Puducherry has recorded 12, Himachal Pradesh 11, Chandigarh and Goa have registered six each and Meghalaya, Tripura, Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a fatality each, according to ministry.
