New Delhi, Advocating DPI's potential in helping nations leapfrog digital transformation, a <keyword id="42981" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="G20" source="Orion">G20</keyword> document prepared by <keyword id="6354424" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-bank" source="Orion">World Bank</keyword> has praised India's approach in unlocking the power of digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar and UPI, for financial inclusion. The impact of DPI goes beyond inclusive finance, to supporting health, education, and sustainability, says the foreward of the document 'G20 policy recommendations for advancing financial inclusion and productivity gains through DPI'. "The India stack exemplifies this approach, combining digital ID, interoperable payments, a digital credentials ledger, and account aggregation. In just six years, it has achieved a remarkable 80 per cent financial inclusion rate-a feat that would have taken nearly five decades without a DPI approach," it said. India's digital ID system Aadhaar, digital payment system UPI, data-exchange platform Digilocker and its other showcase platforms have found a special mention among the examples of DPIs "all of which play a leading role in the advancement of financial inclusion in many countries". Other systems mentioned were Singapore's Singpass, the Philippines' PhilSys, and the UAE's UAE-Pass among the digital ID systems; Brazil's Pix, India's UPI, Turkiye's FAST, the European Union's TIPS, and Thailand's PromptPay under fast payment systems; as well as Estonia's X-Road, Singapore's MyInfo, Australia's Customer Data Right, and the UK's Open Banking. Put simply, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) refers to blocks or platforms such as digital identification, payment infrastructure and data exchange solutions that help countries deliver essential services to their people, empowering citizens and improving lives by enabling digital inclusion. DPIs are interoperable, open, and inclusive systems supported by technology and provide essential, society-wide, public and private services that play a critical role in accelerating this digital transformation in an inclusive manner. The document also cites India's Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA) and India's Account Aggregator (AA) Framework. On Fast Payment Systems, it noted that in some countries, such as India and Brazil the adoption has been "particularly quick and transformative". UPI, it said, has been widely adopted, benefitting from a user-friendly interface, open banking features, and private sector participation. "The UPI platform has gained significant popularity in India; more than 9.41 billion transactions valuing about Rs 14.89 trillion were transacted in May 2023 alone. For the fiscal year 2022-23, the total value of UPI transaction was nearly 50 per cent of India's nominal GDP," the report said. The document goes on to say that an aspect that makes DPIs unique, and that can further reduce existing constraints, is their ability to complement each other or be integrated in end-to-end workflows. One such service enabled by the interaction of open APIs and digital ID systems is the e-KYC or remote authentication services. A case in point is India's Aadhaar biometric identification system, which covers over one billion people and supports APIs, enables remote identification and authentication, it observes. Financial service providers can thus authenticate an individual's identity remotely, even by using selfie-based mechanisms to substitute for in-person customer due diligence verification requirements, it said. India has also figured prominently in the section on 'DPIs' Potential Added Value for the Private Sector', that cites how FSPs and MSMEs could benefit from these digital networks. "For some nonbank financial companies (NBFCs) in India, the AA ecosystem enabled an 8 per cent higher conversion rate in SME lending, a 65 per cent savings in depreciation costs, and a 66 per cent reduction in costs related to fraud detection. According to industry estimates, banks' costs of onboarding customers in India decreased from USD 23 to USD 0.1 with the use of DPI," it said. Through open application programming interface (APIs), India's Open Credit Enablement Network (OCEN) enables MSMEs participating in digital markets to secure credit by using information about their business history, rather than pledging physical assets as collateral. According to the document, in India, the implementation of various DPIs is considered to have played a critical role in the increase in account ownership from just one-fourth of adults in 2008 to almost 80 per cent a decade later "a journey that it is estimated would have taken up to 47 years without DPIs".

He always wanted to stay "very close" to not just what is happening on the internet, but to get in the weeds regarding the infrastructure of being online.During his freshman year of high school, Pang took an unpaid internship at conglomerate Danaher, where he worked on early versions of cloud-based computer programming and digital infrastructure.So it's poetic that during an interview with Insider, Pang proudly revealed a copy of "Cable Cowboy," the Mark Robichaux book on Liberty Media founder John Malone. Liberty's business now stretches across various platforms from Formula One to Sirius XM. Its roots, however, lie in cable television, telecommunications, and the internet."'Cable Cowboy' was the book I got from my first mentor when I was a junior analyst at Blackstone," Pang said. "It was so much better than getting a 10-K, research report, and being told to just go crunch numbers and build a financial model."Pang — who grew up in Portland, Oregon — is now a managing director at Carlyle. He leads the investment firm's digital-infrastructure team, and he's just wrapped up another deal in the telecommunications and data-center space.The Carlyle MD helped ink a <a href="https://www.carlyle.com/media-room/news-release-archive/carlyle-partners-with-tillman-global-holdings-commits-up-to-1-billion-to-accelerate-investments-in-us-towers">partnership with Tillman Global</a> — which controls Tillman Infrastructure — to invest up to $1 billion in US towers. This follows up the firm's agreement to buy Involta last December. Involta operates 12 data centers and a fiber network that stretches more than 19,000 kilometers.Pang's efforts are demonstrative of a broader trend across private equity.Approximately $42 billion worth of transactions have been done in the data-center business this year, well ahead of last year's $28 billion, and beating the near $37 billion record from 2013, according to PitchBook.In late August, an investor group led by Swiss Life Asset Management <a href="https://www.lightreading.com/the-edge/databank-recapitalizes-in-pursuit-of-edge/d/d-id/780043?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosprorata&amp;stream=top">paid $1.5 billion</a> for a 35% stake in Dallas-based DataBank, while DigitalBridge Group and Equinix were shortlisted into a final round of talks to buy the data-center business owned by Malaysia's Time Dotcom, Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-30/digitalbridge-equinix-are-said-to-be-vying-for-time-dotcom-unit?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosprorata&amp;stream=top">reported</a>. This flurry of deal-making comes after KKR and Global Infrastructure Partners wrapped up a whopping <a href="https://cyrusone.com/press-release/kkr-and-gip-complete-acquisition-of-cyrusone/">$15 billion take-private</a> deal for data-center operator CyrusOne in March."Market demand is supported by robust trends in the US mobile communications, data proliferation, and cloud computing like the use of Zoom calls," Pang said. "People love using the internet."<h2>Narrowing the 'digital divide'</h2>That thirst for connectivity, however, can be harder to quench in remote parts of the country. While New Yorkers enjoy lightning-fast internet, smaller cities require billions-of-dollars of investment to bring modern telecommunications infrastructure to their doorsteps.And for Pang, this infrastructure divide lies at the heart of the partnership with Tillman and the acquisition of Involta."It takes so many dollars to actually upgrade this infrastructure and that will take time to effectively get everywhere," he said.The team at Carlyle wants to invest in underserved markets that lack what Pang called "premium infrastructure." Involta's data centers, for example, serve hospital systems, which sometimes have some of the country's oldest infrastructure, Pang added."These deals are focused on providing essential internet and connectivity to narrow the digital divide," he said. "That means investing in rural, sparse markets, where there is a supply and demand imbalance."Carlyle has committed more than $2.5 billion in capital toward infrastructure investments in the last 18 months. The group — which fits within Carlyle's global private-equity division — has roughly $13 billion in assets under management, up from $5 billion last year.To be sure, that uptick in AUM was helped by Carlyle <a href="https://www.carlyle.com/media-room/news-release-archive/carlyle-creates-integrated-platform-and-adds-leadership-global-infrastructure">combining</a> its infrastructure business with its energy-investment arm in May.Pang joined the investment firm in May last year from Blackstone.

While speaking at the CII Partnership Summit, Nokia Corporation President and CEO <keyword id="4324516" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pekka-lundmark" source="Orion">Pekka Lundmark</keyword> said that India will be one of the key winners based on the developments happening around the world. "What I believe is really impressive is the way India has been systematically building the digital ecosystem. Now the most ambitious and the fastest by a big margin 5G rollout in the world, these are our building blocks for the future economic growth in any country and India is really taking a lead in this respect," Lundmark said. He said that India is now the second biggest market for Nokia and the company is exporting 5G base stations from here to other parts of the world. "The next big thing in India will be industrial digitalization, manufacturing industry 4.0 and the opportunity to use this platform that you've been building to attract more and more manufacturing, and also very importantly R&amp;D to the country," Lundmark said. Ericsson, President and CEO, Borje Ekholm said 4G helped build digital companies in the US and China like Facebook, Tencent etc and with rapid 5G rollout India will have the most modern digital infrastructure. "We saw all the big consumer applications developing over the last few years. We have seen them develop in the two countries that built out the first 4G networks in the world. That happened to be the United States and it happened to be China. Almost all jobs in the consumer sector or digitalized in the consumer were created there. "With 5G, we're going to digitize society and those jobs will be created in the country where the digital infrastructure is built first. With the pace India is building out 5G, it will have the most modern digital infrastructure in the world," Ekholm said. Both Ericsson and Nokia pitched for the world to follow a global standard to keep the cost of technology lower otherwise it will hurt economies of scale, digital inclusion of rural masses and the global economy. General Atlantic (India), Managing Director, Sandeep Naik said that India is a top-growing economy and foreign direct investment worth USD 100 billion is estimated to flow in India over the next 10 years. "In terms of private capital entering India, we did around USD 40 billion in 2021, I see that easily going over USD 100 billion in the next five years. I think that is a conservative number in terms of private capital coming into the country. As General Atlantic, we will have a fair share of that market," Naik said. Nestle India, Chairman and Managing Director, <keyword id="2691730" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="suresh-narayanan" source="Orion">Suresh Narayanan</keyword> said that the spectre of inflation, especially food inflation is still there. "We cannot wish it away and we cannot assume that it is not going to be haunting us for a while. This clearly has implications in terms of price values, cost, incomes, expenditures and all of that. The fact that we are a consumption-driven economy, gives us a lot of hedge in terms of some of the global volatilities that we have. The mining firm will merge with <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/xpdi-stock">Power and Digital Infrastructure Acquisition Company</a>, whose anchor investor is BlackRock. Following the transaction, the combined company will operate as Core Scientific and trade on the Nasdaq exchange. Core Scientific owns four US facilities where it operates proprietary mining facilities and hosts <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/btc-usd">bitcoin</a> and other digital asset mining hardware for customers. The company said it operates with 100% net carbon neutrality through using clean energy inputs and purchasing renewable energy credits. The proceeds from the SPAC merger are expected to fund mining equipment purchases of and infrastructure build out.The firm mined 755 <keyword id="6354947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bitcoin">bitcoin</keyword> in the first quarter of 2021. Publicly traded competitor Marathon Digital Holding's mining fleet produced 196 newly minted bitcoins during the same period. Core Scientific also estimates it will boast a mining capacity of 510 megawatts by the end of the year through its four facilities. For the first half of 2021, Core Scientific has mined 1,683 bitcoins total.The merger is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021. Shares of Power and Digital Infrastructure Acquisition Company have jumped as high as 2% since the close Tuesday before the transaction was announced.

Bitcoin mining firm Core Scientific is going public via SPAC in a $4.3 billion deal

<keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword>'s investment in technology for the year 2014-15 is an estimated $26 billion comprising of investment in digitization, infrastructural improvements, push for manufacturing and technology in healthcare &amp; agriculture, says a report by market research firm Zinnov. 
 The report, which assesses first 100 days of the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> and highlights the impacts it has had so far. The new government plans to take digitalization to the next level by implementing the digitalization of agriculture &amp; PDS data, enabling e-governance &amp; m-governance, facilitating the <keyword id="2412665" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="National-Rural-Internet-and-Technology-Mission">National Rural Internet and Technology Mission</keyword>, using IT for real time information gathering, and the digitization of all government files, the report states. 
 In the past, the government has engaged multiple MNCs such as <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword>, HP and <keyword id="6390344" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cisco">Cisco</keyword> for digitization projects. Government To Create $26 Billion Worth Of Opportunity For Technology Firms

New Delhi, Dec 17 () The government on Tuesday promised broadband access in all villages by 2022, as it launched the ambitious National Broadband Mission entailing stakeholder investment of Rs 7 lakh crore in the coming years.
 The mission will facilitate universal and equitable access to broadband services across the country, especially in rural and remote areas. It also involves laying of incremental 30 lakh route km of Optical Fiber Cable and increase in tower density from 0.42 to 1 tower per thousand of population by 2024.
 The mission unveiled by Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will also aim at significantly improving quality of services for mobile and internet.
 "By 2022, we will take broadband to all the villages of India...The number of towers in the country which is about 5.65 lakh will be increased to 10 lakh," Prasad said.
 The mission also envisages increasing fiberisation of towers to 70 per cent from 30 per cent at present, he added.
 The mission will enable strengthening of technological infrastructure for education, health, entrepreneurship and development, he said.
 "We will also take the speeds up to 50 Mbps is a phased manner," Prasad promised.
 He urged the states to extend full support to the mission, to take benefits of technology (fuelled by high speed connectivity) to people.
 The mission will envisage stakeholder investment of USD 100 billion (Rs 7 lakh crore) including Rs 70,000 crore from Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) in coming years.
 Overall, the broadband mission aims to fast-track growth of digital communications infrastructure, bridge the digital divide, facilitate digital empowerment and inclusion, and provide affordable and universal access of broadband for all. It will lay emphasis on universality, affordability and quality of services.
 The centre will work with states and UTs for having consistent policies pertaining to expansion of digital infrastructure including for Right of Way (RoW) approvals required for laying of optical fibre cable.
 The mission also involves Development of Broadband Readiness Index to measure the availability of digital communications infrastructure, and foster conducive policy ecosystem within a State/UT.
 It will also strive for creation of a digital fiber map of the communications network and infrastructure, including Optical Fiber Cables and Towers, across the country. MBI ANU

These flying vehicles are made for short-haul flights, such as a dash from Manhattan to Newark Liberty International Airport, and could be billed as the safer, faster, and more-energy-efficient future of transportation.There are <a target="_blank" href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/evtol-air-taxi-industry">hundreds of companies</a> in the advanced-air-mobility market, some with fully functioning aircraft being used in test flights and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-aviation-industry-is-excited-about-flying-taxis-2023-12">displayed in showcases</a> worldwide. But some experts say if air taxis are going to go mainstream, an overlooked element will need to be scaled up: software.<h2>Infrastructure is a top priority</h2>Before accepting customers in the US, AAM companies will have to go through a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.faa.gov/air-taxis">certification process</a> mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration, which could be issued as early as 2025 or 2026. From there, the process of becoming operational will “move really fast,” said Yu Yu Zhang, the program director of advanced air mobility at the Center for Urban Transportation Research. That is, if specific infrastructure is in place, she said.“When we talk about infrastructure for AAM, there are two parts,” Zhang told Business Insider. One part is the physical infrastructure, such as a vertiport — where air taxis can take off, land, and recharge. The other part is the digital infrastructure.While the AAM industry has primarily focused on developing and certifying new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/10-best-funded-electric-aviation-startups-joby-beta-evtol-startup-2022-1">aircraft</a>, companies are beginning to build the digital infrastructure — the hardware and software that can enable a service — that will make mainstreaming the field possible, Zhang said. There’s no official process for creating this infrastructure yet, but companies are working toward an automated ecosystem that supports safe and efficient flights. There are two software categories that fall under <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-electric-air-taxi-delivered-to-us-joby-evtol-2023-10">eVTOL vehicles</a>, Susan Shaheen, a professor in residence at the University of California, Berkeley, and a codirector of the university’s Transportation Sustainability Research Center, told BI. There’s consumer-facing software such as digital apps people can use to book a flight and back-end software for operations, aircraft control, and air-traffic management. The latter will “play a critical role in ensuring safety and efficient operations,” Shaheen said.<h2>New digital solutions are in progress</h2>Some startups are focused on advancing the operations side of the software. In May, students at Purdue University launched <a target="_blank" href="https://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/releases/2023/Q2/purdue-startup-aerovy-mobility-develops-cloud-software-to-support-infrastructure-for-electric-aircraft.html">Aerovy Mobility</a>, which focuses on cloud-based technology that supports aircraft energy needs, such as recharging at a vertiport. Meanwhile, other eVTOL developers face specific software challenges related to their aircraft. For example, Wisk, a subsidiary of Boeing, developed an autonomous four-seat air taxi. Because it’s a self-flying aircraft, there are unique software needs, Becky Tanner, the chief marketing officer at Wisk, told BI. This eVTOL uses software that builds on the same technology that supports automated pilot functions during commercial flights, but with <a target="_blank" href="https://wisk.aero/autonomy/">added features</a> that support pilotless voyages with human oversight. <div type="image" title="Image of a yellow flying taxi with multiple propellers around the wings. In this case, the goal is for customers to have “stitched-together, seamless experiences where they can book multiple forms of transportation in a one-stop shop,” she said. In practice, this could look like booking your Wisk ride with the same app you used to get a car to the vertiport.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-pitch-deck-air-taxi-startup-volocopter-raise-170-million-2022-7">Volocopter</a>, a German company, is approaching software holistically through a product that integrates factors including but not limited to passenger booking, pilot dispatch, airspace navigation, and battery management. The cloud-based platform is called VoloIQ and has been in development since 2020. The technology is supported by Microsoft Azure and described as the “digital brains” behind Volocopter’s eVTOL system.Part of VoloIQ is already live and used in test flights, Klaus Seywald, the director of digital products and strategy at Volocopter, told BI. There are also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.volocopter.com/en/blog/french-evolution-first-to-fly-2024">plans to launch</a> limited commercial services this year in Paris and Rome, and those flights are set to be available to book through a VoloIQ-linked app. At the start, the app will show customers which routes and flights are available, but over time, Volocopter plans to move toward an on-demand model, Seywald said. <div type="image" title="Image of a Volocopter aircraft called the VoloCity. The idea is that rather than developing a new system, other eVTOL companies could use VoloIQ to support their products. “The problems it solves are not mostly Volocopter-specific but industry-specific,” Seywald added. <h2>Getting air taxis in the skies could hinge on the customers</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-software">Software</a> is an essential part of the success of a mobility provider, Seywald told BI. “Building and certifying a new vehicle is one thing, but you have to think about how do you actually operate it,” he said. “The certifications are within reach, but operation, I think, has not gotten enough attention.” Seywald thinks the industry will start scaling around 2026 and that by 2028 or 2029, the average person will be able to afford and start using this mode of transportation. Until then, Shaheen said, AAM businesses have the opportunity to learn from other shared-mobility industries, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ubers-history">ride-hailing companies</a>.“We have seen from shared-mobility deployments if you build it, riders do not always come,” she said. “It is very important to demonstrate viable use cases and to serve a mobility need.” Part of getting customers to use flying taxis will hinge on addressing social barriers including safety, equity, affordability, and convenience, Shaheen said. In part, service providers can approach this by developing and using Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible consumer apps.“If software and digital platforms can enhance the safety and convenience of eVTOL, then these tools could help address these obstacles,” she said.

How flying taxis could go mainstream 

<keyword id="6358599" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Mittal">Sunil Mittal</keyword>’s <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> is all set to invest $16 billion in IT infrastructure to offer telecom services to Indian citizens in rural and urban parts of the country. Mittal made the announcement during the launch of <keyword id="2926829" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital-India-Week">Digital India week</keyword>. 
 
"Digital India has power to transform the country in shortest time, also digitally native Modi the right man to lead the drive. Modi understands the power of technology and how it can transform the nation, connect the nation in shortest timeframe. Who better to lead it than our PM," Mittal said in a report by ET. 
 
Additionally, he said that the company will make significant contribution towards the Digital Indian initiative. "We will also ensure providing services such as e-health and e-education to Indian citizens," he added. 
 
He also noted that the company will also work towards offering 4G services pan India. It should be noted that in April 2012, Airtel had launched India's first 4G services in Kolkata. The teleco major now offers 4G services in Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mangalore, Pune, Chandigarh and Amritsar.

Vaghela on Friday said that introduction of <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword> technology will enable India to achieve the digital empowerment goal and improve the well-being of the people. "5G technology would offer significant improvements in network performance and is likely to transform industries and society, putting the country on an unprecedented growth trajectory. 5G would have a massive impact on various industries and on the overall economy," he said at a workshop here. Vaghela also said that India is the second largest telecom market in the world now with 117 crore telecom subscribers and 825 million broadband subscribers. He said that India has considered technology as a key element for two things, one for rapid economic growth and the second for social and digital inclusion. According to him, the Digital India programme has helped a lot in expanding the use of technology and the Digital India profile has seen a huge change in various sectors. The TRAI chief also highlighted how the stakeholders can cooperate for expediting infrastructure rollout for 5G deployment considering the issues and challenges in the northeastern states. He said that the main focus of the government is to provide internet and digital access to everyone, including underserved people, to ensure that every section of society gets connectivity at any cost. About the need of adopting new digital technology for social and economic development, Vaghela said that digitalisation of the economy and also social life is of utmost importance in today's world. Emphasising the need for digital literacy and digital infrastructure, he said that the development of digital infrastructure and connectivity to every household is a must and this is the only way a common citizen becomes able to explore the opportunities available in an economy. 5G will improve network performance in India: TRAI Chairperson

Noted <keyword id="48669" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banker" source="Orion">banker</keyword> <keyword id="396965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kv-kamath" source="Orion">KV Kamath</keyword>, who now chairs the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), expects the digital sector to contribute a quarter of the incremental <keyword id="35050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gdp" source="Orion">GDP</keyword> by the time the economy becomes a USD 7 trillion giant by <keyword id="9422686" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FY29" source="Orion">FY29</keyword>. Currently, the contribution of the digital economy is a low 4 per cent, whereas it is as much as 40 per cent in China. The government and planners see the economy becoming the third largest in the world by FY29, overtaking Japan, with a GDP of USD 7 trillion from the present USD 3.3 trillion. The digital economy -- the digital infrastructure, e-commerce and other digital payments and services segments--can be the country's biggest growth-driver and can contribute as much as 25 per cent of the incremental GDP by the time India becomes a USD 7-trillion economy by FY29. Currently, the share is a low 4 per cent, Kamath told PTI in an interaction over the weekend. "As much as 40 per cent of the Chinese economy come from the digital sector today, and I don't see any reason why we can't achieve this," the former ICICI Bank chairman quipped. The chairman of NaBFID, the newest development finance institution funded by the government, does not see any reason to stop pushing infrastructure investments as the economy has lot more appetite for more expressways, highways, airports, seaports, and high-speed railheads, discounting a question whether he sees any room for an encore of the banking crisis that befell on lenders after the government push on infrastructure during FY06-08. "The economy has more appetite for infrastructure and we still have a lot to do on the key infrastructure sectors of transport such as expressways, highways, airports, seaports, and high-speed railway networks. I would say on roads, we've to have more and more expressways going forward, large airports and dedicated high-speed railheads for both goods as well as passengers," Kamath said. "More important, we can have more urban rejuvenation projects. Why to limit this to the top cities alone? Let's build more world class cities and also upgrade the existing ones," he said. The economy will need more expressways, more airports and seaports to handle the demand of an economy that will be doubling from the present size to be the third largest with a USD7 trillion GDP over the next five years, he explained. He also does not see the asset quality of banks imploding again as happened in the last leg of the past decade as most of the infra companies went bust due to their excessive debt-driven expansion. When pointed out that the highly talked about NPA resolution -- from over 12 per cent to under-5 per cent now--come with a heavy cost on banks, having written off close to Rs 13 lakh crore since the IBC came into force as the recovery has been less than 30 per cent so far, Kamath said whatever progress has been made so far is the topping and as "we move forward and as the IBC system improves, there will be more incremental gains." On the funding part, he said, though banks will continue to remain an integral part of infra funding, there is a need to look at more sources that offer longer term funds. The <keyword id="49448" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nhai" source="Orion">NHAI</keyword> has made a very good beginning with asset monetization through InVits. The whole infra segment, including the railways, should move into the monetization model and this is the most secure way of fundraising, he said. On the digital front, Kamath said, the NaBFID is actively looking to fund key areas in this space such as data centres , smart cities etc. The NaBFID was set up in 2021 with an Act of Parliament with Rs 20,000 crore capital and it made the first lending with a Rs 520 crore loan to the Banihal Qazigund Road Tunnel project in J&amp;K in December. The company expects to do around Rs 15,000 crore of funding by the end of this fiscal.

<keyword id="6354716" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> has announced it will lay off 10,000 <keyword id="6357081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="employees">employees</keyword> in the next two years as part of its <keyword id="620644" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="restructuring-plans">restructuring plans</keyword>, reset its <keyword id="10944738" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cost-bases">cost bases</keyword> and invest in R&amp;D and <keyword id="9429475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="future-capabilities">future capabilities</keyword> including 5G, cloud and digital infrastructure. On a group level, this is expected to lower the company's cost base by approximately 600 million euros by the end of 2023. These savings will offset increased investments in R&amp;D, future capabilities and costs related to salary inflation. "Planned restructuring is expected to result in an 80,000-85,000 employee organisation, over an 18-24-month period, instead of the approximately 90,000 employees Nokia has today," the company said in a statement late on Tuesday. In October last year, the company announced a new operating model designed to better position the company for changing markets and align with customer needs. "Nokia now has four fully accountable business groups. Each of them has identified a clear path to sustainable, profitable growth and they are resetting their cost bases to invest in their future," said <keyword id="4324516" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="pekka-lundmark">Pekka Lundmark</keyword>, President and CEO. "Each business group will aim for technology leadership. In those areas where we choose to compete, we will play to win. We are therefore enhancing product quality and cost competitiveness, and investing in the right skills and capabilities," Lundmark added. The savings will take place gradually and will offset increased investments in R&amp;D, future capabilities and costs related to salary inflation. Additional long-term benefits that Nokia will action include streamlining its portfolio and reducing site fragmentation, the company said. Nokia said it expects approximately 500 million euros of cash outflows related to its previous restructuring programme. The company said the mobile networks division aims to be the indisputable top in wireless mobility networks and associated services. To achieve this goal, Nokia will focus on strengthening technology leadership and will further invest in 5G R&amp;D. It will also accelerate efforts to digitalize processes and tools across the value chain.
