Busting the myth: Why EVs aren't always greener than petrol or diesel vehicles

<ul><li><keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">Electric vehicles</keyword> (EVs) are gaining popularity worldwide</li><li>However, concerns remain about their environmental impact</li><li> <keyword id="21881868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alternative-fuel" source="keywords">Alternative fuel</keyword> vehicles like hydrogen fuel cells and biofuels are some more alternatives we can tap into</li></ul> Electric vehicles or EVs are in their prime right now, with the demand crossing an all-time high. A trend noticeable around the world, EVs are not only becoming increasingly popular but also fairly affordable. Slowly but surely EVs are overcoming the challenges that crossed them — design, features, safety, and most importantly range. A major credit to this trend can be given to consumer acceptance, policy backing, and improving infrastructure. However, there is a downside to EVs as well. Having featured multiple EVs with our series<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCR3PaYxcmk&amp;t=1s" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank"> Short Spin, </a>I developed a strong reference point. This made me wonder why are we so heavily reliant on them. Over its life cycle, EVs cannot be termed as particularly environmentally friendly, which has been their main selling point over the past few decades. <h2>The ‘Red’ side of EVs</h2> There is a bit of red within the go-green agenda that EV manufacturers push. EVs as a whole do come with benefits like low maintenance, improved efficiency and ultimately lower fuel emissions. However, <keyword id="21357488" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV-production" source="keywords">EV production</keyword> and disposal can have detrimental effects on the natural environment. Here are some socio-ecological concerns over EVs: 1. High carbon footprint in battery production: EV battery production is energy-intensive and often relies on electricity from fossil fuels, leading to a high initial carbon footprint. This is elaborated in a story recently published by Earth Org. 2. Resource constraints and ethical concerns: Particularly with the extensive mining of cobalt and other minerals for EVs, there has been a global outcry. Limited availability of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, shady mining practices long work hours, unsafe work environments, and use of child labour in underdeveloped parts of the world have raised several ethical issues around the sustainability of EVs. This issue can be explored further in this essay by Al Jazeera. 3. Recycling and end-of-life challenges: EV battery recycling is currently inefficient, costly, and poses significant environmental risks, with a huge amount of batteries ending up in landfills. 4. Manufacturing costs and economic barriers: High production costs, especially for batteries, make EVs more expensive than conventional vehicles and require significant investments in new manufacturing facilities and supply chains. 5. Supply chain and geopolitical risks: Critical mineral resources necessary for EV production are concentrated in a few countries. This leads to vulnerabilities in the complex supply chain and often risks disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, or natural disasters. China as of today controls 83% of EV battery production in the world, with a major stronghold on the supply chain. While I am in no way suggesting to drop out of EVs, I believe sticking to just one alternative risks replicating the same mistake we did for ICE vehicles. So, what are the alternatives? <h2>The alternates fuel vehicles (<keyword id="23193800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AFVs" source="keywords">AFVs</keyword>)</h2> AFVs are a growing segment of the automotive industry that utilize fuels other than traditional gasoline or diesel. These vehicles offer similar potential benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. While EVs are also a form of AFVs, here we will list out other major alternatives like hydrogen fuel and biofuel options. Hydrogen fuel cells: Convert hydrogen gas into electricity, emitting only water vapour. Currently, <keyword id="19906788" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Toyota" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> and Hyundai are the only hydrogen-based cars in the Indian market. Hydrogen internal combustion engines: These vehicles use hydrogen as a fuel in modified combustion engines. While road-legal vehicles for this fuel type aren’t out, BMW with hydrogen 7 is working on a prototype. Ethanol: This is a renewable fuel made from plant materials, commonly mixed with gasoline. In America, Ford F-150 Flex-Fuel and Chevrolet Silverado Flex-Fuel are utilizing this technology. Biodiesel and renewable diesel: Derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease, these fuel types can be used in diesel engines. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Perhaps the most famous alternative for cabbies in Delhi, CNG is in popular demand. Technically it is used in specially modified internal combustion engines, primarily for lower emissions. Propane (Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG): A byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining, used in internal combustion engines. As technology continues to advance, these AFVs are becoming more accessible and affordable, making them a promising option for sustainable transportation. EVs are not the only options for alternative fuel — make way for hydrogen and bio-fuel

As part of his ambition to make <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> a green economy, Union minister <keyword id="19897455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nitin-gadkari" source="keywords">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> wants to slash GST on hybrid vehicles and has vowed to rid the country entirely of the over 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles. "One hundred per cent," <keyword id="19934966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gadkari" source="keywords">Gadkari</keyword>, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, said when asked whether it is possible for India to get rid of petrol and diesel cars altogether. "It is difficult but not impossible. This is my vision," Gadkari said in an interview to PTI. He said India spends Rs 16 lakh crore on fuel imports. This money will be used for improving the life of farmers, villages will be prosperous and the youth will get employment, the minister said. Gadkari did not give any timeline to meet this ambitious target which even proponents of green energy believe is mind bogglingly difficult. The proposal to reduce GST on hybrid vehicles to five per cent and to 12 per cent for flex engines has been sent to the Finance ministry which is considering the requisition, Gadkari said. The minister said he firmly believes the country can end fuel import by promoting the use of biofuels. Environmental activists welcomed Gadkari's vision for increasing green mobility, but also struck a word of caution by flagging the use of fossil fuels in the production of electricity. "In India, we are still heavily dependent on a fossil fuel-based energy system to power electric cars, and this needs to be changed. There is urgent need to ensure 100 per cent renewable energy alongside electric vehicles to tackle the climate crisis," <keyword id="21152150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="avinash-chanchal" source="keywords">Avinash Chanchal</keyword>, a campaigner for Greenpeace India, told PTI. Gadkari said he has been pitching for alternative fuels since 2004 and is confident things will change in the coming five to seven years. "I cannot give you a date and year for this transformation to take place as it is very difficult. This is difficult but not impossible," Gadkari asserted. He said he firmly believes that given the speed with which electric vehicles are being introduced, the coming era will be of alternative and biofuels and this dream will come true. Gadkari said auto companies such as Bajaj, TVS and Hero are also planning to manufacture motorcycles using flex engines and auto rickshaws using similar technology too were on the way. "I roam around in a car that runs on hydrogen. You can see electric cars in every other household. People who used to say this was impossible, have changed their views now and started believing in what I have been saying for the last 20 years," the minister said. "Tatas and <keyword id="19906966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-leyland" source="keywords">Ashok Leyland</keyword> have introduced trucks that run on hydrogen. There are trucks that run on LNG/CNG. There are 350 factories across the country of bio-CNG," he said. "Definitely, a revolution is taking place. Gadkari vows to eliminate petrol, diesel vehicles in India, bats for lower tax for hybrid cars

Union Minister of <keyword id="19994242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-transport" source="keywords">Road Transport</keyword> and Highways, <keyword id="19897455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitin-Gadkari" source="keywords">Nitin Gadkari</keyword>, asked states to pitch for reducing GST on flex-engine cars. Gadkari stated that the government needs the support of the states to promote <keyword id="23007559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flex-engine-vehicles" source="keywords">flex engine vehicles</keyword> by reducing GST up to 12 per cent on <keyword id="23007560" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flex-engines" source="keywords">flex engines</keyword>, cars, and scooters. "We will try to convince all the finance ministers. Yesterday I had the opportunity to discuss with the finance minister of Maharashtra and I told him, you please go to the meeting and put up this proposal for reducing GST up to 12 per cent on flex engines, cars, and scooters," he said. Addressing IFGE's India Bio-Energy and Tech Expo in New Delhi, the Union Minister added that factors such as economic viability, proven technology, availability of raw material, and marketability of the finished product are in favour of the development of these engines. Gadkari said that developing flex-fuel engines is the target of the government, and we have the "proven technology" to make it possible. "I feel that now the flex fuel is very, very important. Already the managing director of Tata, Suzuki and Toyota, they have decided to start flex engine car in the country," the Union Minister stated. Gadkari added, "So the flex engine is the ultimate target. As far as the market is concerned, there is huge potential. Everywhere, as far as a comparison between fossil fuel and <keyword id="20228373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biofuel" source="keywords">biofuel</keyword>, in the Indian scenario, the cost of biofuel is less and there is no pollution. So that is the important reason that it is going to be advantageous to the common man also," the Minister stated. Going further, Gadkari said that vehicle companies such as Bajaj, TVS, and Hero, along with two or three other companies, have their models ready with flex engines to run on 100 per cent <keyword id="20069651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ethanol" source="keywords">ethanol</keyword>. He said, "Many of the generator manufacturers are working to change the diesel generators into ethanol. One of the companies is also they are taking an interest in converting 5 lakhs of telecommunication towers there and 250 crore litre consumption of diesel. Now they are also changing into ethanol." He further stated that the raw material is already available in India, there is a need to think about ways to increase the production of biomass, which can be useful for making biofuel. Gadkari asked states to pitch for reducing GST on flex engine vehicles

The Mumbai-based auto major on Monday launched a midsize SUV coupe <keyword id="20400827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curvv" source="keywords">Curvv</keyword> with petrol and diesel powertrains with a price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of <keyword id="2883300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Creta" source="Orion">Hyundai Creta</keyword>, <keyword id="7720018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Seltos" source="Orion">Kia Seltos</keyword>, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others. "Curvv is being positioned in the fast-growing, mid-size SUV segment, which is roughly 16% of the whole industry (passenger vehicle) size. If translated into numbers, it would be like 7 lakh units a year," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle MD Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interaction. The segment is very competitive with various brands having a product already in the market, he noted. Therefore, if one enters this segment so late, then it will have to think of coming up with a slightly differentiated approach, Chandra said. "And that was the thinking behind Curvv, which comes with an SUV coupe body style. We saw that this was gaining popularity globally, especially in the premium or luxury segment," he added. Further, he said: "So we thought, why don't we bring this into the crowded segment as a fresh, refreshing kind of a body style." When asked about sales expectations from the model, Chandra said: "We have come with this model, with the best in class features. It's a differentiated product in this and therefore we think it is going to perform well." He noted that Tata Motors currently has a market share of around 19% in the SUV segment and expects the new model to help it grow further. "We'll gain from where we are. The market leader in SUVs would be, say, 21-22 %, so it's a crowded segment. It's not that one player is holding the roost here. "All the top 3-4 players in SUVs are around the same market share figure," Chandra said. He noted that the company is also looking to enhance its dealer network by around 10-15 % in the next one year. "We have a very aggressive plan of expanding dealerships. We will need to have an enhanced network. We will have to make them bigger, also in size. And therefore, for EVs, we have started separation of the outlets. So there will be expansion in touchpoints, not only on the sales side, but big time on the service side as well," Chandra said. <keyword id="20400828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-curvv" source="keywords">Tata Curvv</keyword> comes with two petrol and a diesel engine option. In the passenger vehicle segment, various carmakers including Maruti Suzuki India and Honda have already stopped manufacturing diesel cars. Gadkari said the contribution of diesel cars has already come down drastically in the country and the manufacturers need to stop selling them in the market. Terming diesel as a hazardous fuel, he noted that the country has to import the fuel to meet the demand. "Say goodbye to diesel... Please stop making them, otherwise we will just increase the tax so much that it would become difficult to sell diesel cars" Gadkari said. He said he will propose additional GST on diesel-powered generators as well. Automobiles are currently taxed at 28% GST, with additional cess ranging from 1% to 22% depending on the type of vehicle. SUVs attract the highest GST at the rate of 28% along with a compensation cess at 22%. Gadkari also asked the industry to focus on environment-friendly alternative fuels like ethanol. An African kingdom famed for its bustling souks and immense desert dunes is revving up to build electric vehicles       

New <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>, The Delhi government on Tuesday issued fresh guidelines for handling end-of-life vehicles in public places, stipulating a penalty of Rs 10,000 for four-wheelers and Rs 5,000 for two-wheelers to be imposed on owners of impounded vehicles before being released. According to the guidelines, continuous enforcement drives should be conducted to phase out such vehicles from public places in the national capital and daily reports sent to the environment department for onward submission to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The government has classified the release procedure of impounded vehicles under two categories -- those who wish to shift their vehicle out of Delhi-NCR and those who wish to park the vehicle in private spaces which are not shared parking places. "On plying and parking of ELVs in public place in NCT of Delhi, once impounded for the first time it can be released on the basis of submission of an undertaking that vehicle will not be plied or parked in any public place within the territory of Delhi and will be removed from the city...," the guidelines read "In case of 4-wheeler, a penalty of Rs 10,000 along with towing charge and parking fee as notified in <keyword id="20667071" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-maintenance-and-management-of-parking-places-rules" source="keywords">Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Places Rules</keyword>, 2019, shall be charged before releasing of such ELVs. In case of 2-wheeler, a penalty of Rs 5,000 along with towing charge and parking fee as notified in Parking Rules 2019 shall be charged...," it said. According to the guidelines, any end-of-life vehicle impounded for the second time and transport vehicles running on diesel fuel and aged more than 10 years old cannot be released. The application for the release of a vehicle along with necessary documents should be submitted within three weeks of impounding of the vehicle and an online platform will be developed for this purpose, it said. According to the guidelines, impounded vehicles will be scrapped in case of three scenarios -- non-submission of application for release within three weeks of impounding of the vehicle, rejection of application submitted for release and impounding of the same vehicle for the second time. All scrap value shall be paid through digital mode only to the bank account in the name of the vehicle owner within 15 days of the vehicle being accepted by the <keyword id="20663769" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="registered-vehicles-scrapping-facility" source="keywords">Registered Vehicles Scrapping Facility</keyword>, it added. Delhi govt issues guidelines for handling end-of-life vehicles in public places

Jio-bp, the fuel retailing joint venture of Reliance Industries Ltd and UK's bp Plc, on Tuesday launched an additive-laced premium <keyword id="6356109" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="diesel" source="Orion">diesel</keyword> that the company said gives improved mileage and gives a saving of up to Rs 1.1 lakh per truck. The premium diesel is priced at rates lower than normal or additive-free diesel sold by public sector (PSU) competition. "Jio-bp today announced the launch of its diesel with ACTIVE technology, set to elevate diesel standards for Indian consumers. "The newly launched additivised diesel, available across the company's network will yield annual savings of up to Rs 1.1 lakh per vehicle to truckers owing to (up to) 4.3 per cent improved fuel economy," it said in a statement. The new diesel is being sold at the Jio-bp outlet in Navi Mumbai for Rs 91.30 per litre, while the normal diesel at PSU petrol pumps in the area cost Rs 92.28 a litre. This new high performance diesel offering will be available at all Jio-bp outlets and "will be offered at regular prices with no additional cost for the first time ever in the Indian market," it said. Diesel with ACTIVE technology helps reduce the risk of unscheduled maintenance caused by dirt build up and removes existing dirt from critical engine parts and protects against its build up with ongoing use. It is designed to work across a range of commercial vehicles, and with ongoing use it offers a variety of benefits to drivers and fleet owners. It helps restore and maintain the power of the engine with ongoing use while also reducing the risk of unscheduled vehicle maintenance, it added. Jio-bp joint venture launches additive-laced premium diesel

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Thousands of tanks have been destroyed in Ukraine since Russia attacked last year.</li><li>Most of the tanks each side is using were designed and built during the Cold War.</li></ul>Tanks have been a defining feature of land warfare for over a century, and the war in Ukraine is no exception.Thousands of tanks and armored vehicles have been destroyed since Russia attacked in February 2022. An unusual feature of that fighting has been that both sides are using the same or similar models of tanks.That commonality is a reflection of the Soviet military's lasting legacy. While updated variants and new models have been introduced since the Soviet disintegration in 1991, most of the tanks being used in Ukraine were designed — and many of them built — during the Cold War.While it may not be surprising that old tanks have vulnerabilities, nearly two years of combat have put their outdated qualities on full display.<h2>T-72s, T-80s, and T-90s</h2><div type="image" title="People loading a tank onto a truck." height="1334" width="2000" msid="104160199" hostid="261"></div>The most common tank at the front has been the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/russia_russian_army_tank_heavy_armoured_vehicles_u/t-72a_t-72_a_main_battle_tank_technical_data_fact_sheet_pictures.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-72</a>. Introduced in 1973, it's the backbone of the Russian armored corps and is one of the most widely used main battle tanks in the world.Weighing about 45 tons, the T-72 has a crew of three — a commander, a driver, and a gunner — and is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing tank rounds and antitank missiles. It also has a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun mounted in the hull and a 12.7mm heavy machine gun on the turret.The T-72 is equipped with an autoloader and carries about 38 rounds — 22 in a carousel at the bottom of the turret and the rest stored in the turret.There are multiple T-72 variants, some with their own sub-variants. The most modern in Russian service are the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/russia_russian_army_tank_heavy_armoured_vehicles_u/t-72b3_mbt_main_battle_tank_russia_technical_data_fact_sheet.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-72B3</a> and the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/russia_russian_army_tank_heavy_armoured_vehicles_u/t-72b3m_t-72b4_mbt_main_battle_tank_technical_data_pictures.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-72B3M</a>, which have improved sights, electronics, engines, and, on the B3M, a new gun. They also rely heavily on explosive reactive armor — explosive blocks mounted on the exterior that detonate outward to counter incoming antiarmor projectiles — though it can add as much as 2 tons in weight.<div type="image" title="Six tanks moving in unison." height="1333" width="2000" msid="104160203" hostid="261"></div>The T-72B3M only entered service in 2017, but it already has a sub-variant, the <a href="https://twitter.com/Archer83Able/status/1625553924030664720?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-72B3M Obr. 2022</a>, which has been modified based on lessons from Ukraine.The Russians have also employed the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/russia_army_list_main_batte_tanks_mbt_uk/t-80_mbt_main_battle_tank_technical_data_fact_sheet_pictures.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-80</a> in large numbers. Introduced in 1976, the T-80 is slightly larger and heavier than the T-72. It has a 125 mm smoothbore gun that also fires tank rounds and antitank missiles, a coaxial PKT machine gun, and a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun on the turret.The T-80 also has a crew of three and an ammo carousel at the base of the turret that holds at least 28 rounds (the tank carries about 40 rounds total) and an autoloader. The T-80 is unique for having a gas-turbine engine instead of a traditional diesel engine and for having an especially large amount of ERA blocks.The Russians primarily use three T-80 variants: the <a href="https://www.army-technology.com/projects/t80/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-80U</a>, <a href="https://weaponsystems.net/system/832-T-80BV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-80BV</a>, and <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/russia_army_list_main_batte_tanks_mbt_uk/t-80bvm_mbt_main_battle_tank_technical_data.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-80BVM</a>, which are distinguishable by how their ERA blocks are arrayed. The T-80BVM has also been upgraded as a result of experiences in Ukraine, resulting in a new sub-variant, the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/ukraine_-_russia_conflict_war_2022/russia_unveils_upgraded_and_battle-ready_t-80bvm_model_2023_tank.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-80BVM Obr. 2023</a>.<div type="image" title="Soldiers standing next to a tank." height="1333" width="2000" msid="104160204" hostid="261"></div>The Russian defense firm Uralvagonzavod <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/09/10/russia-might-restart-production-of-the-t-80-tank-dont-expect-it-to-happen-soon/?sh=6f109999e801" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has been tasked</a> with building new T-80s from scratch — a good indicator of the tank's battlefield value — but that isn't as easy as it sounds.Russia hasn't built a new T-80 hull <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/09/24/the-russians-are-making-their-first-new-tank-turbines-in-30-years-likely-signaling-a-very-long-war/?sh=45508e7a50c7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">or a new gas-turbine engine</a> for the tank in more than 30 years. While machine tooling may be available, new construction may require hundreds of subcontractors who also haven't built tank parts in decades.The most modern tank that Russia has used widely so far is the <a href="https://www.army-technology.com/projects/t90/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-90</a>. It was adopted in 1992 and was intended to replace the T-72 and T-80. It's heavier than both, weighing about 50 tons. (Russian officials say <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-military-intel-chief-we-havent-seen-russian-t14-tank-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the newer T-14 has been used in Ukraine</a> but not in direct combat.)The T-90 also has a crew of three and is equipped with an ammo carousel and autoloader in the turret, where about half of the tank's 40 rounds are also stored, as well as a 125 mm smoothbore gun, a PKT coaxial machine gun, and a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.<div type="image" title="A destroyed tank in a field." height="1333" width="2000" msid="104160206" hostid="261"></div>In 2019, Russia adopted an upgraded variant known as the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/russia_russian_army_tank_heavy_armoured_vehicles_u/t-90m_model_2017_mbt_main_battle_tank_technical_data_sheet.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-90M</a>, which was developed based on the Russian military's experience in Syria. It features a new turret with a rear external compartment capable of holding 10 additional rounds, new ERA blocks on its turret and sides, and a remote-operated 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.In addition to cage armor on the rear of the hull and turret, the T-90M is equipped with a metal net covering the gap between the hull and the turret to stop anti-tank projectiles, an upgrade also featured on the newest T-72 and T-80 sub-variants.Ukraine also has T-72 and T-80 fleets, which it has replenished with captured Russian T-72s, T-80s, and T-90s. It has also received hundreds of T-72s from NATO countries, including <a href="https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-04-29/card/poland-has-sent-more-than-200-tanks-to-ukraine-Krwar3DCPzHJJk4UMVh4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 200</a> from Poland, which also <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/04/18/ex-polish-pt-91-tanks-have-arrived-in-ukraine-theyre-better-than-russias-own-replacement-tanks/?sh=24febcb12907" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sent its own upgraded version</a> of the T-72.Ukraine was a hub for Soviet tank manufacturing, including of the T-80, and retained that industry after the Cold War. In addition to inherited T-80Us, Ukraine has operated domestically built <a href="https://www.militarytoday.com/tanks/t80ud.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-80UD</a> (which the Russians also use) and <a href="https://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.php?armor_id=525" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-84</a> variants, the latter of which has a sub-variant, the <a href="https://www.army-technology.com/projects/oplot-m-main-battle-tank-ukraine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T-84 Oplot-M</a>.<h2>'Crappy Russian armored vehicles'</h2><div type="image" title="A Soviet soldier sits on one of many tanks next to a ship." height="1307" width="2000" msid="104160207" hostid="261"></div>While both sides have lost many tanks, Russia's losses are considered especially high, with <a href="https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">open-source estimates</a> counting as many as 1,500 destroyed and another 800 abandoned, captured, or damaged.Those steep tallies can be attributed to inadequate training, poor tactics, and the sophistication of Ukraine's antiarmor weapons, but Russia's tank designs also have long-standing vulnerabilities.One put on vivid display in Ukraine is the tendency of ammo stored in the unprotected turret carousel to detonate when incoming fire penetrates the turret or the side of the tank. This creates a "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x78oE2yxNpI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jack-in-the-box effect</a>," wherein the turret is blown off, killing the crew and destroying the tank.Russian tanks "have been notorious for their flaws since 1967," Barry Posen, a professor and expert on international affairs and military strategy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mohV4xolbhE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an MIT event</a> last year.<div type="image" title="Destroyed tanks in a warehouse." height="1333" width="2000" msid="104160211" hostid="261"></div>"We're in the third or fourth generation of crappy Russian armored vehicles, and this is kind of a weird thing because people have been blowing these armored vehicles to pieces all over the world. Russian designers have had lots of time to work on this problem," Posen said."So far, there appears not to be much change — or to the extent that there is change, the Western designers who design antiarmor warheads manage to keep well ahead," Posen added, pointing to the frequency of "k-kills," or "catastrophic kills," against Russian tanks in Ukraine.Russian <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-holding-out-as-russia-makes-a-mess-of-invasion-2022-2" target="_top">tactics early in the war</a> "leaned into the flaws" of their tanks, Posen said. Russian troops have made adaptations since then, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-ukraine-welding-crude-cages-tanks-last-ditch-defense-effort-2023-7" target="_top">welding large cages</a> to their tanks in hopes of thwarting antitank missiles and one-way attack drones.In contrast, NATO tank designs emphasize crew survival. Their tanks have a separate internal storage compartment for ammunition, usually in the rear, with a blast door that opens and closes during the reloading process. If detonated by incoming fire, the rounds explode upward and to the rear rather than into the crew compartment.<div type="image" title="Tank crew standing on and inspecting a tank." height="1332" width="2000" msid="104160214" hostid="261"></div>Ukraine's Soviet-era tank fleet is now being supplemented with newer Western-designed tanks, chiefly the German-made <a href="https://www.militarytoday.com/tanks/leopard_2.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leopard 2</a>. Ukraine has received several dozen <a href="https://weaponsystems.net/system/827-Leopard%202A4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leopard 2A4s</a> and <a href="https://www.militarytoday.com/tanks/leopard_2a6.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leopard 2A6s</a> from Germany, Poland, Spain, Norway, Canada, Portugal, and Denmark. Sweden also donated 10 <a href="https://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.php?armor_id=457" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stridsvagn 122s</a> — its version of the <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/germany_german_army_heavy_armoured_vehicle_tank_uk/leopard_2a5_mbt_main_battle_tank_data_pictures_video.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leopard 2A5</a>.Ukraine has also received 14 British-made <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/united_kingdom_british_army_heavy_armoured_tank_uk/challenger_2_main_battle_tank_technical_data_sheet_description_information_specifications_uk.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Challenger 2</a> tanks and is getting 31 US-built <a href="https://www.militarytoday.com/tanks/m1a1_abrams.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">M1A1 Abrams</a> tanks, the first of which <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/25/world/europe/us-abrams-tanks-ukraine.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrived</a> in late September.Keeping those Western-supplied armored vehicles in action could become a challenge. While Russian fire often immobilizes rather than destroys them, "rebuilding them demands a consistent provision of spare parts," the Royal United Services Institute, a British think tank, said in a <a href="https://www.rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/special-resources/stormbreak-fighting-through-russian-defences-ukraines-2023-offensive" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent report</a>.That means Western countries "need to ensure that the industrial support is available to make the Ukrainian military sustainable," the report said.<div type="image" title="Crew sitting on a tank in a field." height="1333" width="2000" msid="104160221" hostid="261"></div>Parts notwithstanding, Ukrainian troops already hold their Western-provided tanks and armored vehicles in high regard, largely because <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-western-vehicle-losses-not-big-win-for-russia-report-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">they have better chances of surviving</a> in them.Despite heavy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-soldiers-say-us-bradley-ifvs-saved-lives-russia-attacks-2023-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">losses of armored vehicles</a> — including several Western-supplied tanks — the design of the Western-made vehicles "is preventing this from converting into a high number of killed personnel," the RUSI report said."The difference is huge," a member of Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade, which has used Leopard 2A6 tanks in combat, said in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukrainian-soldier-reveals-why-leopards-are-better-than-soviet-tanks-2023-9">an interview</a> in September."The main advantage of this machine is crew survivability. Meaning when you go out in it, you are more at ease about your life and the lives of your fellows," the tanker said. "There's no such effect as in Soviet equipment — no detonation of the ammo rack and no turret flying off."
