The number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases witnesses a sharp rise in September with more than 400 new infections being reported in the last week of the month. A total of 693 cases of dengue were reported last month till September 28, according to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday. The city recorded a total of 525 dengue cases till September 21 this year while 412 fresh cases were reported in the week that followed, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to 937 so far this year, it said. In 2015, the city had witnessed a massive dengue outbreak, with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October. It was Delhi's worst dengue outbreak since 1996. Of the 937 total cases recorded till September 28 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 28 period since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 2,152. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. A total of 125 cases of malaria and 23 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 28, the report said. The MCD has said that it has been conducting drives to check the spread of dengue. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the city, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. According to the MCD report, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June and 26 in July. According to the MCD report, breeding of mosquito larvae has been found at 1,30,544 households this year till September 28. Authorities issued 96,189 legal notices for mosquitogenic conditions, and 35,668 prosecutions were launched. In 2018, Delhi had reported 481 dengue cases during the January 1-September 21 period, according to the report. The figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were -- 282, 212 and 273, respectively. Ten deaths each were reported due to dengue in 2016 and 2017, four in 2018 and two in 2019. According to official data, 4,431 dengue cases were recorded in Delhi in 2016, 4,726 in 2017, 2,798 in 2018, 2,036 in 2019 and 1,072 in 2020. PTI KND. Delhi reports over 400 cases of dengue in a week, taking the tally to 937

Vietnam reports 260,000 dengue cases, 102 deaths

"Covid cases are declining right now, but the virus is still there. I am still seeing Covid cases in my OPD. In the last 3-4 days, two cases were detected in OPD and one later in an ICU. However, on an average, dengue infection is on rise right now," said Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant at <keyword id="56368" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apollo-hospitals" source="Orion">Apollo Hospitals</keyword>. "There are a few overlapping symptoms when it comes to both dengue and Covid, such as fever, bodyache and headache, and in such cases diagnosis cannot be that black and white. So, we are prescribing both Covid and dengue test to ascertain the exact infection. In fact, in some cases, even malaria and typhoid tests are also being done," he said. However, if a patient is suffering more from sore throat and cough and their fever is not very high, then Covid infection is more probable. So, a dengue test is not being prescribed in cases "where we can differentiate from the nature of symptoms," Chatterjee added. Doctors at many government and private hospitals are reporting a rise in footfall in OPDs after a continuous spike in dengue cases in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> in the past two weeks. Most of the patients are complaining of fever, cough, sore throat and body ache or headache or both. Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital - Delhi government's largest hospital and the main COVID-19 facility - is also reporting dengue cases with some of the patients being admitted after their platelets level had fallen beyond the normal range. Dengue fever can result in a drop in white blood cell and platelet counts. The normal platelet count in the body ranges from 1.5 to 4 lacs, which can go down to as low as 20,000 to 40,000 in the case of dengue patients. "Yes, rising dengue cases are making diagnosis difficult now. Earlier, we would analyse symptoms and Covid test would be prescribed if they had fever or other matching symptoms. Now not only patients, but even doctors are confused about the exact ailment due to their overlapping symptoms," a senior doctor at the hospital said. Over 520 dengue cases have been reported in Delhi this year till September 21, as per the data shared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). According to a report released by the civic body on September 26, as many as 281 cases have been reported this month alone till September 21. The spurt in dengue cases in the national capital has come after Delhi was lashed by incessant rains recently. 106 cases of malaria and 20 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi in the same period, the report said. Of the 525 total cases recorded till September 21 this year, 75 were reported in August, which is the highest number of dengue cases logged between January 1 to September 21 since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 1,807. Malaria, dengue and chikungunya are accompanied by high-grade fever and, therefore, doctors feel that people might think that they have contracted COVID-19, or even vice-versa. Chatterjee said many people are reluctant to get the COVID-19 test done, fearing they will have to go in isolation as they want to "go on with their lives". "So, given the slump in daily Covid cases in Delhi and rise in dengue cases, many are assuming that if they have fever or sore throat or body ache, it is either regular viral infection or something else, but not Covid. But, it could be Covid too, as the coronavirus is still amidst us," he cautioned and urged people to get themselves tested for Covid too if symptoms persist.  With every visit, Vislawath would drop in a letter to the local municipal authorities. Seventeen letters went unresponded and he finally decided to visit them, one of whom said, “Educated people like you need to be helping out authorities in these situations.” That’s when the IIT Guwahati graduate took a step back from his active role as the co-founder of Raasta Films, a filmmaking company and decided to build his second startup along with his batchmates Sai Kumar Chinthala and Suraj Peddi. They built Marut Drones – a startup that uses drones to spray <keyword id="65563" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mosquito">mosquito</keyword> killing repellent in Hyderabad’s massive lakes. “These lakes have water hyacinths growing in them, which often makes it difficult for authorities to enter and spray repellents. Workers too are prone to diseases when they enter water, as it also takes a long time to clean. With the drone we can easily target specific areas where larvae are breeding,” Vislawath told Business Insider. What disturbed Vislawath was that as many as 9.7 million cases of mosquito borne diseases are reported in a year. They lead to 40,297 deaths. The startup claims to have built India’s first drone to eradicate mosquitoes larvae and water hyacinth on lakes as well as autonomous drones that spray on agricultural fields. They also use an AI platform to identify mosquito borne diseases and the areas where they breed. “All of Hyderabad has only 17 entomologists. Only when a complaint comes in, a manual survey is done to check for mosquito breeding. They don’t have real time data. With our technology, a dashboard will show them the data of different breeds of mosquitoes,” he said. Marut Drones has built an IOT device, which captures mosquitoes within a 500 metre range and identifies whether its male or female and what kind of disease it could be carrying. Based on that, they give recommendations on whether the specific area has larvae or adult mosquitoes and how to deal with it. Interestingly for Vislawath and Sai, it was an obvious choice to use drones as they used them for filmmaking. They partnered with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. After a pilot in March in Miyapur lake , the mosquito larval density has come down from 41 per ladle of water to 28. With great results and a boost from the Hyderabad Municipal corporation, Marut Drones is now expanding to Mumbai and Raipur. “We aim to reach out to all smart cities in the country with our effective solutions,” said Vislawath. The startup was also one of the top startups in Facebook India’s Artificial Intelligence accelerator, through which they will get a month of mentorship from the social media giant. Singh said that there is neither any medicine nor any vaccine for dengue and therefore, efforts should be made to prevent the mosquito bite. Rising dengue cases in Uttar Pradesh put health officials on high alert

Four more deaths have been reported from the district in the past 24 hours, taking the toll to 114 that includes 88 children. The deaths have continued despite widespread fogging and door-to-door surveys to drain out stagnant water and to check the spread of vector-borne diseases. <keyword id="12080003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="veer-pal" source="Orion">Veer Pal</keyword>, a daily wager, who lost his five-year-old son due to lack of treatment on Sunday, told reporters, that a private hospital in the city had demanded Rs 30,000 in advance to start treatment. "I requested them to start treatment and give me time to arrange money, but they refused. Later, I took my child to the <keyword id="3849448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="firozabad-medical-college" source="Orion">Firozabad Medical College</keyword>, where staff refused to admit my child as beds were not available. I arranged for a private taxi to take him to Agra, but my son died on the way," he said. Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of Firozabad Medical College, Hansraj Singh, said that no official complaint was made in the matter. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dinesh Kumar Premi said there are 64 active camps in the district and 4,800 people, including those with fever, are undergoing treatment there. According to the health department officials, 578 cases of dengue have been confirmed in Firozabad so far. A few cases of malaria, scrub typhus - a bacterial illness spread by larval mites, leptospirosis, another bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, have also been reported. Diarrhoea has also emerged as a threat for children. Additional Director of the health department, A.K. Singh, said that over 100 teams of health staff are conducting door-to-door surveys to identify patients and provide them with medicines and required assistance. "There is no shortage of platelets or required medicines at the government centres. Additional ambulances have been arranged to take patients to hospital," he asserted. "Civic body teams are carrying out special cleanliness drives in the affected areas and all the recent deaths are being investigated," Singh added. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists mosquitoes as one of the <a href="https://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/vector_ecology/mosquito-borne-diseases/en/">deadliest animals on the planet</a>, since they're responsible for millions of deaths every year worldwide.Dengue fever alone is the leading cause of death in the tropics and subtropics, with up to 400 million people infected yearly, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/dengue/">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)</a>.Disease-carrying mosquitoes are - for now - only found within certain regions that have the temperature ranges those insects need to survive and thrive. But as the planet continues to warm (four of the past five years have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oceans-warming-faster-than-we-thought-2019-1">the hottest on record</a>), mosquitoes' ranges are growing. Until now, temperatures have restricted the bugs to habitat belts around the Equator; however, they're beginning to venture farther north and south. <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0007213">A new study</a> published today in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases forecasts how climate change is likely affect the range and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zika-virus-mosquitoes-and-global-climate-change-2016-2">distribution of some virus-carrying mosquitoes</a>."We know these bugs are gonna move, and so we looked at what's that going to mean for us," Sadie Ryan, a medical geography professor at the University of Florida and co-author of the new study, told Business Insider.The study results showed that by 2050, the number of new people at risk of exposure to these diseases will approach 500 million. If greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise unabated, nearly 1 billion new people will be exposed to these disease-carrying mosquito species by the year 2080.<h2>The consequences of climate change for human health</h2>Ryan said her research team wanted to "give a tangible view of what the risks are to human health" as temperatures rise and insects are able to live in more places.So the study looked at future changes in the geographical distributions of two mosquito species that can transmit dengue fever, the chikungunya virus, and Zika: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (the Tiger mosquito). <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">TT/GettyAs the climate warms, mosquitoes will venture farther from the tropics.</div></div></div>Scientists know that Ae. aegypti needs temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit to thrive, while Ae. albopitcus prefers temperatures between 68 and 85 degrees. So the researchers modeled how average temperatures would change in different parts of the world by 2050 and 2080, based on various greenhouse-gas emissions scenarios. They then used that data to highlight new areas where the two mosquitoes could transmit diseases.The results clearly showed that an increasing number of areas outside the tropics - and the people who live in those areas - will become vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases within 60 years if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.The study noted that 6 billion people currently live in areas suitable for Ae. aegypti transmission for at least part of the year, and 6.3 billion people live in areas suitable for Ae. albopitcus (with significant overlap between the two populations).But by 2080 - in a "business-as-usual" scenario - an additional 1 billion people will be added to this at-risk group. <h2>Same diseases, new places</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Dorioconnell/GettyBy 2080, more than 1 billion people could be newly exposed to mosquito-borne diseases.</div></div></div>According to the study authors, northern areas like Europe, the US, and Canada can expect to deal with these mosquito-borne illnesses in the future. "Places like Europe, North America, and high elevations in the tropics that used to be too cold for the viruses will face new diseases like dengue," Colin Carlson, a co-author of the new study, said <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2019-03/gumc-1pw032119.php">in a press release</a>. "The leading edge [of the mosquitoes' range] is rising northward and will hit European populations that are historically dense," Ryan said.Interestingly, the authors found that a "business-as-usual" scenario would lead some areas in southwest Asia and west Africa to get too hot for Ae. albopitcus, reducing the number of number of people at risk from that species there.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Getty Images/Tom ErvinDifferent mosquito species have different optimal temperature ranges and transmit different diseases.</div></div></div>Ryan and her co-authors also noted that regions in which populations lack previous exposure to mosquito-borne diseases are particularly at risk for explosive outbreaks when new illnesses are introduced.The 2015 Zika virus outbreak in the Americas is a prime example of that.
