The hospitals across West Bengal, both public and private, are overflowing with <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> patients. According to an official in the state health department, 800-900 cases are being reported on an average daily. This could send West Bengal to the top of the list among the states in the country where dengue cases have been reported, in just over a month. According to the figures released by the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NVBDCP), West Bengal had reported only 239 cases till August 31. In the 40-odd days since, the number of cases in the state has surpassed 20,000, the state health department admits. Apart from Kolkata, most cases are from districts like North 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad, Siliguri and Darjeeling. "Lack of proper sanitation, clogged drainage systems, accumulation of rain water due to unplanned urbanisation are some of the reasons behind this spurt. There has certainly been some negligence on the part of civic bodies entrusted with monitoring the situation and combating the threat. Sufficient intervention was not carried out and efforts weren't made to prevent the accumulation of water near human settlements. The presence of cattle sheds, encroachments and the like in urban and semi-urban areas added to the mess," the official in the state health department said. There was hardly any activity by the civic bodies over the last fortnight due to Durga Puja celebrations across the state. State government offices -- including civic bodies -- have remained closed since October 1 and will open from Monday. Health officials hope that measures will be taken on a war-footing thereafter to prevent further spread as hospitals have started running out of space, despite opening temporary wards for the dengue patients. West Bengal's record hasn't been too good, so far as combating the disease is concerned. In 2015, it recorded fourth highest figures after Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. In 2016 and 2017, West Bengal was at the top of the list. No records were available for the next two years from the state. In 2020, West Bengal was again in second position after Punjab. Doctors say that more than the figures, people's suffering is what matters. Dengue cases in Bengal shot up by 20,000 in a month

While Delhi and many other states including Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have seen a sudden spurt in <keyword id="64895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="Orion">dengue cases</keyword> in the last couple of days, government data showed that the number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases has recorded a significant rise in the last few years. Moreover, states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan witnessed the maximum number of cases of dengue during 2021 among all the states. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan recorded 29750, 23389 and 20749 dengue cases respectively during 2021. Delhi also recorded a significantly higher number of cases at 13089 during the same year. A total of 1.93 lakh cases were reported from all across the country in 2021. Government data revealed that 2020 had witnessed a remarkably lower number of 44,585 cases probably due to the Covid related restrictions in most parts of India as against 1.57 lakh cases in 2019. This year, a considerable number of dengue cases have been reported from Delhi and many cities of Uttar Pradesh. As per reports, UP has so far registered over 2,200 dengue cases, with the state capital Lucknow reporting over 300 cases. Similarly, Delhi has also recorded nearly 1000 cases. Officials said that October can be the most vulnerable period for the spread of dengue in Delhi and recent spells of rain have only added to the woes. Recently, the Delhi government asked hospitals to reserve 10-15 per cent beds for patients of vector-borne diseases. Government data showed that 346 deaths were reported across the country due to dengue in 2021 as against 56 deaths in 2020 and 166 deaths in 2019. The central government intervenes whenever there is a sudden rise in dengue cases. Reports said that a six-member team has been sent to Uttar Pradesh very recently by the <keyword id="83655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Health-Ministry" source="Orion">Union Health Ministry</keyword> to collaborate with the state authorities in taking public health measures for dengue management in the districts of Firozabad, Agra and Etawah. The National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) is the nodal agency under the umbrella of the National Health Mission for Vector Borne Diseases (including dengue) prevention and control in the country. The NCVBDC has issued multiple advisories to the States/UTs for detection and control of outbreaks, preparedness and capacity building to take effective measures for vector control, involvement of the non-health sector, ensuring availability of drugs, diagnostics, insecticides, equipment and to fill up the vacant positions of entomologists. Moreover, training has been imparted to doctors on case management and to entomologists on integrated vector control at the central and state level. As per a parliament reply on August 2, 2022, free diagnostic facilities through 769 Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals and 17 Apex Referral Laboratories have been made functional. 1.92 lakh IgM tests have been provided by the Centre. It said that the NCVBDC provides technical guidelines for prevention, control, and management of dengue cases in States/UTs. Dengue cases show a spike, October is the most vulnerable month

The number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases witnesses a sharp rise in September with more than 400 new infections being reported in the last week of the month. A total of 693 cases of dengue were reported last month till September 28, according to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday. The city recorded a total of 525 dengue cases till September 21 this year while 412 fresh cases were reported in the week that followed, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to 937 so far this year, it said. In 2015, the city had witnessed a massive dengue outbreak, with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October. It was Delhi's worst dengue outbreak since 1996. Of the 937 total cases recorded till September 28 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 28 period since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 2,152. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. A total of 125 cases of malaria and 23 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 28, the report said. The MCD has said that it has been conducting drives to check the spread of dengue. Amid a spike in dengue cases in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of Covid and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of Covid which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is Covid positive or not, doctors said. Amid the continuous spurt in dengue cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently said that a plan has been devised to combat the vector-borne disease. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the city, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. According to the MCD report, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June and 26 in July. According to the MCD report, breeding of mosquito larvae has been found at 1,30,544 households this year till September 28. Authorities issued 96,189 legal notices for mosquitogenic conditions, and 35,668 prosecutions were launched. In 2018, Delhi had reported 481 dengue cases during the January 1-September 21 period, according to the report. The figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were -- 282, 212 and 273, respectively. Ten deaths each were reported due to dengue in 2016 and 2017, four in 2018 and two in 2019. According to official data, 4,431 dengue cases were recorded in Delhi in 2016, 4,726 in 2017, 2,798 in 2018, 2,036 in 2019 and 1,072 in 2020. PTI KND. Delhi reports over 400 cases of dengue in a week, taking the tally to 937

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attributed the significant <keyword id="20029550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise" source="keywords">rise</keyword> in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword> in the city this year to an increase in the number of <keyword id="22375552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testing-centres" source="keywords">testing centres</keyword>, which has grown from 36 to 900 compared to last year, according to an official report. As of July 6, Delhi recorded over 256 dengue cases, which is nearly double of the 136 cases recorded in the corresponding period in 2023 and the highest since 2020, according to the report's data. In previous years, the number of dengue cases stood at 153 in 2022, 38 in 2021, and 22 in 2020. The highest number of dengue cases were recorded in the Najafgarh Zone, the report said. No deaths due to the vector-borne disease have been reported so far this year. Last year, 19 deaths occurred due to dengue, the second-highest since 2020. "The rise in the number of cases this year is because more testing centres have started collecting samples and reporting the dengue cases to the civic body. Until last year, there were about 36 testing centres. Now, this number has increased to 900 because of which the numbers appear to be inflated," a senior civic body official said. The peak season for dengue is yet to arrive in Delhi and the situation will call for urgent attention when the monsoon advances, providing a suitable atmosphere for <keyword id="21283114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-breeding" source="keywords">mosquito breeding</keyword> to increase significantly, the official said. Usually, it takes about 10-15 days for a larva to become an adult mosquito that spreads dengue. The MCD is taking various measures to curb breeding at the source, another official said. According to the report, in areas under the jurisdiction of other agencies like New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Delhi Cantt and Railways, around 10 dengue cases were reported as of July 6. The report also shows data on other vector-borne diseases. The number of malaria cases reported until the end of last week stood at 90, while chikungunya cases were logged at 22. The MCD conducted over 1.8 crore house visits to check for domestic mosquito breeding and found breeding in over 43,000 houses, the report said. Rise in dengue cases due to more testing centres in city: MCD

Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023. As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Singh said that there is neither any medicine nor any vaccine for dengue and therefore, efforts should be made to prevent the mosquito bite. Rising dengue cases in Uttar Pradesh put health officials on high alert

<keyword id="13486" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vietnam" source="Orion">Vietnam</keyword> has reported about 260,000 cases of dengue fever infections and 102 deaths so far this year, the <keyword id="210071" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry-of-health" source="Orion">Ministry of Health</keyword> said Friday. The number of infections and fatalities grew nearly five times from the same period in 2021, the <keyword id="48413" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry" source="Orion">Ministry</keyword> said, adding that "major outbreaks" are likely to occur in many provinces and cities in November and December, reports <keyword id="106387" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="xinhua-news-agency" source="Orion">Xinhua news agency</keyword>. Ho Chi Minh City is still the hotspot with nearly 70,000 cases and 29 deaths. The capital Hanoi has seen more than 8,000 cases with 12 deaths. Besides dengue, Vietnam has also witnessed the complicated development of other diseases recently. In the northern <keyword id="15371776" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bac-kan" source="Orion">Bac Kan</keyword> province, more than 700 primary school students have come down with the mysterious flu, and among them, an eight-year-old child has died. Among seven samples sent for testing, five came back positive for the influenza B strain, while the others came back negative. In Hanoi, there is an increase in infections of some diseases including 1,543 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, 11 cases of tetanus and four cases of Japanese encephalitis. Vietnam reports 260,000 dengue cases, 102 deaths

Over the year, doctors have discussed over 80,000 cases around the spectrum of diseases. We have listed down the diseases most discussed in 2016 and here they go: 
 
 
1) Dengue was a major health concern this year. With the onset of hot and humid conditions across the country, discussions around infectious diseases namely- dengue (Rank 3) and malaria (Rank 8) increased rapidly during the months May-September 2016. In the segment of infectious diseases caused by mosquito bite, the screening played a pivotal role in the management of patients with dengue or malaria.

In addition to it, relevant screening and treatment options were discussed to accurately manage the patients with dermatological disorders, which included blood profiling, biopsy, and fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, azithromycin, respectively. 
 
3) <keyword id="6359018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="diabetes">Diabetes</keyword>: Being the diabetic capital of the world, a consistent pattern was observed in the discussion around one of the major metabolic disorder- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (Rank 4), which became the fourth most talked about disease amongst HCPs from varied specialties.

Parallel to COPD and Psoriasis, the highly informative conversations around the diagnosis and treatment of cancer (Rank 7), either surgically or therapeutically, assisted in making malignancy to the list of top discussed diseases as well. 
 
5) Cardiomegaly (Rank 9) and hypertension (Rank 10) were equally discussed by HCPs over the year. The patients with cardiovascular diseases were often presented with comorbidities that led to comprehensive discussions around the management and treatment options for the same diseases, majorly by cardiologists.

It analyzes the possible consequences of various levels of climate change in the US. With respect to West Nile virus, the report says, the US could see about 3,300 more cases each year by 2100 if current greenhouse-gas emission patterns continue. (That's under a scenario in which we keep putting more heat-trapping gas into the atmosphere for the rest of the 21st century.)The annual costs of those illnesses and deaths by 2050: $3.3 billion.The report also looks at a more optimistic scenario, which shows greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions over the next 30 years, with further decreases after that. Almost everywhere, average annual temperatures will rise. Combined, these factors will likely lead to higher rates of many other infectious diseases in addition to West Nile virus. For example, droughts and dry conditions are known to cause a spike in cases of Valley fever. More cases of the illness, which is caused by a fungus in soil, have already been observed in states like Arizona and California. Valley fever sends people to the hospital in about 40% of cases and causes 75% of infected people to be unable to perform daily tasks for weeks or months. The geographic ranges of pests that carry tropical and subtropical diseases could expand as well.Outbreaks of dengue, for example, have recently been reported <a href="https://nca2018.globalchange.gov/chapter/23/">in southern Texas</a> because the mosquitoes carrying the tropical disease no longer get killed off by low temperatures in the state. <a href="https://nca2018.globalchange.gov/chapter/26/">Alaskans</a>, meanwhile, could get infected with tick-borne illnesses like Lyme at higher rates. A rise in instances of diarrhoeal disease, for example, has been linked to flooding, heavy rainfall, and high temperatures. These factors, and the sanitation issues they cause, could also increase rates of infections like cryptosporidiosis, which causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain.In addition to nationwide trends in infectious disease transmission, the report looks at some specific locations that are at risk. In Alaska, for example, environmental changes could reduce residents' access to clean water, since tundra ponds that provide clean water are shrinking due to climate change. Riverbank erosion could also lower water quality, and wastewater treatment systems could get damaged from coastal erosion or storm surges. This might force some Alaskans to use untreated water, reuse water, or ration water, which could cause waterborne infectious diseases to become more common, the report said. West Nile virus infections could become twice as common in the US within 30 years. Here's why disease-carrying insects are spreading.

They said Chapare is not a pandemic threat.</li></ul>A small but deadly outbreak in Bolivia yielded new information about a mysterious virus discovered in 2004.The virus, named <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-11/b-esh110820.php">Chapare virus</a> after the region where it was first observed, causes a hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola. Five cases were confirmed near La Paz, Bolivia's capital city, in 2019, and three of them were fatal.Three of the cases were healthcare workers who may have contracted the virus from their patients. A medical resident who died of the disease may have been infected while suctioning saliva from a patient, and an ambulance worker who was infected may have contracted the virus while resuscitating that medical resident, according to a report presented today at the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.This evidence of human-to-human transmission is reason for caution among healthcare workers in the region, and the investigators urged anyone dealing with suspected cases of Chapare virus to avoid contact with patients' bodily fluids.<h2>The investigators were surprised to see Chapare virus show up after 15 years</h2>Those infected with Chapare virus had symptoms including fever, headache, body ache, nausea, and bleeding from the gums, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention virologist Maria Morales-Betoulle told Insider. She and her colleagues thought the illness was caused by <a href="https://www.insider.com/dengue-prevention-efforts-stifled-by-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-7">dengue</a>, a more common virus with similar symptoms."In South America in general, when people see cases with those symptoms, they immediately think about dengue and they do not necessarily think about a virus like Chapare," Morales-Betoulle said. "But you will not find what you're not looking for."When the team in Bolivia realized the illness was not caused by dengue, they sent patient samples to a <keyword id="6379474" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="cdc">CDC</keyword> laboratory in the US with advanced genome sequencing capabilities. It was there that, to the researchers' surprise, the virus was identified as Chapare.<h2>Chapare virus is not a pandemic threat</h2>Chapare virus is much harder to catch than the coronavirus. While the coronavirus is easily transmissible via the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-spreads-droplets-aerosols-poop-2020-5">respiratory route</a>, Chapare spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids at the peak of one's illness.The people who are at risk of contracting Chapare virus are those having close contact with the sick, like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-healthcare-workers-risk-getting-coronavirus-but-cant-get-tested-2020-3">healthcare workers</a> and family members taking care of people at home, ASTMH scientific program chair and president-elect Daniel Bausch said.Additionally, Chapare virus is fairly geographically specific, Bausch said. The report provided some evidence that the small-eared pigmy rice rat may carry the virus, and those rats are only found in certain parts of South America. Scientists discovered a deadly hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola that can spread person-to-person in Bolivia

<a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/111008/1/WHO_DCO_WHD_2014.1_eng.pdf?ua=1" target="_blank">Half of the world population</a> is considered at-risk for diseases transmitted by blood-sucking bugs like ticks, sandflies, and mosquitoes. For <a href="http://www.who.int/campaigns/world-health-day/2014/en/" target="_blank">World Health Day today</a>, the World Health Organization wanted to highlight that very real risk with a snappy slogan: "small bite, big threat."
That's right: The most dangerous animals on the planet can be killed with a single swat - but if they've had time to bite, they may have already transmitted a fatal disease.
Many Americans consider bug bites a nuisance more than anything else. But illnesses transmitted by mosquitoes and their ilk kill more than a million people each year and infect more than a billion, causing debilitating pain, brain damage, blindness, and other serious effects.
Globally, the deadliest of the creatures that carry and cause these diseases is the mosquito. Here are 11 scientific reasons why they are the worst.
<h3>1. Mosquitoes put 40% of the world at risk for dengue, which causes "the feeling of broken bones."</h3>
Dengue fever hurts so much that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/diseases-you-can-get-from-mosquitoes-2013-8">it's commonly referred to as</a> break bone fever.
It's the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne disease in the world, with 40% of the world currently at risk. Between 50 and 100 million people get dengue every year year, and even though it's not usually fatal, <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs117/en/">it still is a leading cause of death</a> for children in certain Latin American and Asian countries.
The disease can also develop into severe dengue, a hemorrhagic condition that is much more dangerous, causing bleeding, organ impairment, and persistent vomiting.
There's no medicine or vaccine for dengue. Treatment generally involves just trying to keep patients hydrated.
<h3>2. Mosquitoes spread yellow fever, which the WHO calls "the original viral haemorrhagic fever."</h3>
Yellow fever <a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/111008/1/WHO_DCO_WHD_2014.1_eng.pdf?ua=1" target="_blank">infects around 200,000 people a year</a> - and kills 30,000. It's a viral hemorrhagic fever that has no treatment. After a period of severe illness, most patients recover, but about 15% enter a toxic phase, when they start to bleed internally and organs begin to fail. About half of patients who enter the toxic phase die.
Cases of yellow fever have been increasing since the 1980s due to declining human immunity, deforestation, climate change, increased air travel, and higher infection rates in cities due to a particular breed of mosquito called the Aedes aegypti.
However, there is an effective vaccine for for the fever - one dose provides life-long immunity, and many countries won't permit travelers to enter without proof of vaccination.

Mosquitoes are behind the recent outbreaks of chikungunya, which can sometimes lead to agonizing pain.</h3>
The painful and potentially debilitating virus chikungunya has been around for centuries, but just appeared in the Americas for the first time at the end of 2013.
The disease's name <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chikungunya-virus-arrives-in-americas-2014-1">comes from a word in a Tanzanian language</a> that means "to become contorted," referring to the severe joint pain that it causes, which lasts for weeks, and in some rare cases, even months and years.
"I've been in Africa and seen and heard children just screaming for days on end because of the pain," American Mosquito Control Association technical advisor Joe Conlon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/diseases-you-can-get-from-mosquitoes-2013-8">told Business Insider</a> last summer.
The first cases were reported on the island of Saint Martin, but since then cases have occurred in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint Barthelemy, the British Virgin Islands, and the Dominican Republic.
Humans have very little natural immunity to chikungunya, which has allowed mosquitoes to spread the virus quickly throughout populations. In 2005, an outbreak sped through the island of La Reunión, sickening 200,000 of 750,000 residents, despite the fact that the only mosquitoes there, the Asian Tiger Mosquitoes, should not have been able to transmit the virus. Experts realized <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/body/chikungunya-outbreak/">that it had mutated</a>, allowing Asian Tiger mosquitoes to spread the disease.
<h3>4. Mosquitoes scoff at national borders, turning isolated cases into outbreaks.</h3>
Any person infected with a mosquito-borne disease can carry it to a different country, where it can spread if they are bitten by a local mosquito upon arrival - which happens frequently.
In 2007, an older <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/body/chikungunya-outbreak/">Italian man returned home from a trip to India</a>, unknowingly having been bitten by a mosquito carrying chikungunya. Upon returning home, he visited a cousin - and within 3 months, more than 200 people had been infected with the disease.
<h3>5. Mosquitoes infect us with nasty bird diseases, like West Nile Virus.</h3>
Although West Nile Virus is carried by birds, humans can catch it too - usually from a mosquito that bit the bird first.
Most people don't develop symptoms, but 20% of the infected develop a fever - accompanied by headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.
About <a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/111008/1/WHO_DCO_WHD_2014.1_eng.pdf?ua=1" target="_blank">1 in 150 people infected become seriously ill</a> with West Nile encephalitis or West Nile meningitis, potentially fatal conditions. Horses can also become ill due to West Nile Virus, but neither horses nor humans can spread the disease. And while there's a vaccine against the illness for horses, there's not for humans.
Since it arrived in the United States, West Nile may <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-study-on-cost-of-west-nile-virus-2014-2">have infected more than 3 million Americans, and cost more than $800 million</a>.
<h3>6. Mosquitoes don't play fair: They target some people more than others.</h3>
Some people really are mosquito magnets. Mosquitoes are drawn to the smell given off by the bacteria that live on everyone's skin, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/skin-bacteria-attracts-mosquito-bites-2014-3">so</a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/skin-bacteria-attracts-mosquito-bites-2014-3">me people give off an odor</a> that makes them especially attractive to the tiny beasts. And contrary to what a lot of people say, eating garlic and using natural repellent <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/06/travel/getting-the-jump-on-mosquitoes.html">doesn't do much</a>, if anything, though DEET-containing bug repellents are effective indeed.

Rift Valley fever mostly affects animals, but mosquitoes can transmit it to humans, too, where it causes some pretty horrific symptoms.
Some people experience no symptoms, and among those who do, the effects <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs207/en/" target="_blank">seem like a flu</a> at first. Some develop neck stiffness and sensitivity to light as well.
But the small subset of people (less than 2%) who get the ocular form of the disease may develop lesions in their eye that cause them to go blind, while others (also less than 2%) may develop potentially a fatal brain disease or hemorrhagic fever.
Since Rift Valley fever primarily affects animal populations, its effects <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/rvf/">can decimate farming industries and economies</a>.
<h3>8. Mosquitoes cause permanent disability around the world.</h3>
Lymphatic filariasis, a mostly neglected tropical disease, <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lymphaticfilariasis/">is a leading cause of permanent disability</a> for people around the world.
More than 120 million people are currently infected, and about one-third of them are disfigured and incapacitated by it.
Mosquitoes spread microscopic parasites between people, which then settle into the lymphatic system to multiply over a period of 6-8 years. They can damage the immune system and the kidneys, and later on in life may cause <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs102/en/">painful swelling in the arms, legs, and genitals</a>.
<h3>9. Mosquitoes spread fatal diseases to children.</h3>
<a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/111008/1/WHO_DCO_WHD_2014.1_eng.pdf?ua=1" target="_blank">Japanese encephalitis</a> is another disease that mosquitoes can spread to humans from infected animals, though humans cannot spread the disease on. It still kills about 10,000 people a year, mostly children under the age of 5. Although there is no treatment, there is an effective vaccine. <a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/111008/1/WHO_DCO_WHD_2014.1_eng.pdf?ua=1"> </a>
<h3>10. Mosquitoes spread malaria, which still causes hundreds of thousands of deaths every year.</h3>
Between 2000 and 2012, there's been <a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/111008/1/WHO_DCO_WHD_2014.1_eng.pdf?ua=1" target="_blank">a dramatic reduction in malaria deaths</a> - 42% globally. Even so, an estimated 627,000 people died from malaria in 2012 alone, and there were approximately 207 million cases of the disease.
Female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit Plasmodium parasites in their bites, which then cause high fever, chills, and a serious flu-like illness that can kill if it's not treated. This disease is preventable, with items like bed nets, insect repellent, and long sleeves, and is treatable, yet it still kills that many people.

Mosquitoes don't need much to survive. Any small water container - or anything that will catch rainwater - is enough to provide a breeding ground. Mosquitoes are also <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DumgZ8ELGlEAF8M9a7X7xMpIXHX-mhS8Xprse3-qK3c/edit">becoming resistant</a> to commonly used insecticides, like pyrethroids, which are commonly used to treat bed nets.
They also travel quickly. The Asian Tiger Mosquito, which is known to carry yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya, has <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0060874#pone.0060874-Sprenger1">spread to 36 states</a> since first showing up in the United States in 1985.
Its vehicle of choice? <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3576225">Used tires</a>. Tires commonly hold standing water, which makes them an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Worn out tires are sent from rich countries to poor countries, where they are often fitted with new treads, and then sent back to the countries they came from. And on both routes, they may carry six-legged stowaways. This is such a serious problem that entomologists are <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/03/05/chikungunya-the-mosquito-borne-virus-that-contorts-your-limbs.html">looking for ways</a> to incorporate insecticides into tire rubber.

Serious virus control and mosquito eradication efforts played a role too.But really, the Zika threat never went away completely. The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/zika/geo/index.html">CDC still says that pregnant women should consider postponing travel to</a> large parts of the Caribbean and Latin America and small sections of the US."People are just going to have to accept that as part of the new reality," Dr. Martin Cetron, director of the CDC's global migration and quarantine division, <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2017/06/09/zika-virus-guidance/">told STAT</a>.And as summer heats up and mosquito season begins again, the risk for Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and West Nile will rise also.It's still unclear just how high the Zika risk will be this summer. Some researchers have predicted that the number of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/20/magazine/why-the-menace-of-mosquitoes-will-only-get-worse.html?_r=0">cases could explode</a>, while others <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/05/yes-zika-will-soon-spread-united-states-it-won-t-be-disaster">point to past success</a> controlling the virus in the US at least as an indication that risk is not high.But researchers do think that funding cuts could make it impossible to conduct the necessary surveillance for the mosquito-borne illness.CDCThe range for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which can carry Zika, dengue, and chikungunya."Without active surveillance - I'm worried we missed [many cases of] Zika last year and we'll miss Zika this year," Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, <a href="http://khn.org/news/a-new-zika-threat-hovers-as-summers-mosquitoes-get-bzzzzy/">told Kaiser Health News</a>. "If you're a woman of reproductive age, living on the Gulf Coast of the United States, or Arizona or Southern California, and you're pregnant or might be pregnant - you don't really know if Zika's in your area or not."But even if most of the US outside those regions is unlikely to see active transmission, officials still want people to be aware that for pregnant women, a Zika infection is just as serious as it has ever been. That means people need to be conscious of the risk of travel to certain places and of the risk of sex with a person that has been in those regions, since Zika can be sexually transmitted. We're just beginning to understand the consequences of the virus on brain development and it may be years before we know just how long-lasting and severe the effects are.Zika is not the only concern. The same mosquitoes that spread Zika also spread dengue and chikungunya. Recent studies have found that these mosquitoes are <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/zika-virus-outbreak/zika-mosquitoes-are-more-places-you-thought-cdc-says-n774791">more common than we thought</a> and that the <a href="http://news.stanford.edu/2017/05/03/warming-planet-means-mosquito-borne-diseases/">optimal temperature for them to spread disease</a> is 84 degrees Fahrenheit.Other mosquitoes that carry <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/westnile/index.html">West Nile virus</a> also thrive in summer. While West Nile is rare, it can be devastating. Most people have no symptoms if infected, but a tiny fraction can experience a potentially fatal neurological condition.Mosquito-borne disease in general is expected to become a bigger problem in a warming world, <a href="https://publichealth.yale.edu/people/durland_fish.profile">Durland Fish</a>, professor emeritus of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health, told Business Insider.There are studies showing that in warmer temperatures, mosquitoes have enough time to go through an extra life cycle in northern latitudes, Fish said."If they go through an extra life cycle, there's going to be more mosquitoes," he said. "If they're transmitting a disease, the incidence of the disease is going to be higher."In addition to that, Fish says that six or seven new species of mosquito have recently been introduced to Florida, two within the past year. More and different types of mosquitoes increase the chances that a new disease could appear.It's not just climate, either. Environmental change and globalization have also made it easier for diseases to spread, something that is seen with mosquitoes and with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deer-tick-can-carry-lyme-disease-powassan-virus-babesiosis-and-more-2017-6">creatures like ticks, too</a>. In general, says Fish, diseases seem to be emerging at an increasing rate."The trend is pretty frightening," he says.
