According to an ASSOCHAM report, which came out in January 2020, India's gig economy is projected to grow to $455 billion by 2023. Zypp Electric raised around $7 million in a Series A round funding from 9unicorns and Anthill Ventures last year in September. The company has so far raised $12.5 million. Founded in 2017, the company claims that it is on a mission to make India carbon-free by using an ecosystem of electric Vehicles and EV-based technology to make last-mile logistics sustainable and emission-free. Delivery startup Zypp Electric to hire 3,000 women delivery partners in 2022

The sacking of Indian-origin Amita Gupta by <keyword id="4427948" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber-eats" source="Orion">Uber Eats</keyword> for allegedly arriving 10 minutes late for a delivery -- after having worked 96 hours in one week -- has highlighted the need to provide basic employment rights to gig workers, a new study has said. Gupta had sued Uber Eats in 2019, claiming that she was only paid A$300 for 96 hours of work. After the first hearing in the Federal Court, Uber settled the high-profile unfair dismissal case with Gupta for $400,000 out of court. According to criminology researchers at Flinders University, inadequate legal reforms, limited power of unions and absence of other safeguards covering this new-economy industry continues to disadvantage gig workers and reinforce the power of companies operating in such a 'precarious' casual labour market. The out-of-court settlement hinged on two key mechanisms of aalgorithm control' taking responsibility from the company, and a popular narrative of worker autonomy and choice, according to associate professor Marinella Marmo from Flinders University. The case in 2020 hinged on the company's model of using an algorithm to allocate and manage work so it can offer flexibility and autonomy for workers in a non-traditional employment model. "We argue that the gig companies use the algorithm and the 'flexibility and autonomy' arguments to take away responsibility from themselves, while spinning the model as a positive for the gig worker (by using the 'they can choose how much/how often they want to engage' argument)," Marmo said in a university statement late on Monday. A new research paper, published in the Griffith Law Review, focuses on the need for a broader approach to worker rights in the modern globalised economy, to address harmful impact on gig workers, many of them from multicultural backgrounds who are already disadvantaged in the workforce. "The gig economy has created new market conditions that exacerbate the exploitation of some of the most vulnerable workers with insecure work and low wages and even supplying their own tools or vehicle," said co-author Dr Sanzhuan Guo. "The Gupta case may be seen to signify the non-existence of employment relations, or at least the need to question whether gig workers are employees in the traditional sense or subcontractors (independent service providers)." Gig companies are establishing new grounds for the commodification of labour to minimise production costs and time. "This generates new forms of precariousness that produce social harm. The two mechanisms of control reflect a powerful narrative that is difficult to disrupt, because the gig economy has been appropriated, normalised and imposed as socially productive, that is, as serving the greater good," said Flinders University PhD candidate, Elvio Sinopoli. New Delhi, May 11 () Leading online food ordering platform Swiggy on Monday said Marriott International's delivery service initiative will now be available in more cities through an agreement with the hospitality major.The association will be the first of its kind for Marriott International hotels across India, as they adapt to this new model for home delivery service, Swiggy said in a statement.To start with, over 20 hotels in cities such as Bengaluru, Kolkata Chandigarh, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Agra, Pune, Mumbai, Coimbatore and Goa will be listed on the company's platform, it added."We are pleased to see Swiggy becoming one of our innovative partners. Marriott International partners with Swiggy for food delivery initiative

New Delhi, March 31 () Food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy on Tuesday said it has set up a relief fund called 'Swiggy Hunger Savior Covid Relief Fund' for the safety and welfare of its delivery partners and their families. The corpus for the fund will be created by Swiggy with primary contributions from the founders, senior leaders, employees and investors, as well as donations from customers and well-wishers, Swiggy said in a statement. As a start, Swiggy Chief Executive Officer Sriharsha Majety has committed 50 per cent of his annual salary towards this fund, it added. The company aims to raise Rs 10 crore for this fund and has already raised over 4 crore through initial contributions from Swiggy, its founders and employees, Swiggy said. "To assist our delivery heroes during these testing times, we have initiated this special fund which will be supported by Swiggy and our investors. I am overwhelmed by this collective initiative to support one another while also doing what we do best, which is serving customers," Majety said. Through the fund, delivery partners are now covered with Income-Protection Insurance where up to 14 days of income is insured if tested positive with COVID-19, the statement said. <ul><li><keyword id="3080230" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-economy">Gig economy</keyword>, which constitutes for over 1.4 million working professionals in India, has added 40,000 more women gig workers, according to an ET report. </li><li>According to Employment Outlook Report by TeamLease Services, the total number of women gig workers in India stands at 67,900. </li><li>The wage bracket of such employees ranges from ₹15,000 to ₹30,000.</li></ul>More women are finding work, thanks to the increasing gig economy but they are being paid less, widening the gender parity. India’s 1.4 million strong gig economy added 40,000 women this year, according to an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/women-bag-frontline-roles-in-gig-economy-but-lag-behind-in-wages/articleshow/70442660.cms?from=mdr">ET report.</a> But, they are making 10% less than men. On an average, women make an average of ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 per month in the newly emerging gig economy. According to Employment Outlook Report by TeamLease Services, the total number of women gig workers in India stands at 67,900 — including employees at delivery hubs and fulfillment centres. In 2017, the percentage of women in salaried jobs stood at nearly 52%, as per the data by <a href="http://www.mospi.gov.in/sites/default/files/publication_reports/Annual%20Report%2C%20PLFS%202017-18_31052019.pdf"> Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2017-18</a>. Flipkart offers the best wages and provides for safety and health at workplace for gig workers in India, as per <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/in-india-flipkart-tops-the-fairness-quotient-for-gig-economy-workers-report/articleshow/68593359.cms">Oxford Internet Institute</a>. It is followed by food delivery platform Foodpanda, cab services platform Ola and Uber. Food aggregators like Swiggy and Zomato too have female delivery partners, thanks to flexible working hours. Swiggy has over 700 women employees at its delivery hubs while Zomato has 500 all across. E-commerce platform Amazon has nearly 1,200 women employees in operational and managerial roles. India is the fifth largest country in terms of growth in flexi staff — which includes leased employees, contractual workers and temps hired from agencies. New Delhi, Apr 27 () Leading skin care brand Nivea India has partnered with online food aggregators Swiggy and Zomato to deliver its hygiene products at consumer's door steps during the lockdown.The service, which was initially started in Mumbai last week, has now been extended to over 30 cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bhopal, Indore, Raipur, Kanpur, Nivea India said in a statement."The brand aims to scale this up to more than 100 cities in the coming week," it said."As a responsible skincare brand, this initiative reinforces our commitment to ensuring that our consumers have uninterrupted access to their daily hygiene essentials. In times of crisis, we stand together and work together to ensure safety of the consumers by delivering products safely &amp; directly to their doorsteps," Nivea India Sales Director Sailesh Viswanathan said.According to the company, consumers can place their orders for Nivea's essential hygiene products through Zomato or Swiggy app on their phones by going to 'Nivea Care Shop' under the market or groceries section.This would allow multiple cashless transaction options to get a safe and contactless delivery to their doorsteps in 60-90 minutes, it added.During the lockdown, several FMCG companies has partnered online aggregators to deliver their range of essential products at the consumer's door step. But as consumers deal with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-recession-jobs-inflation-data-economy-federal-reserve-interest-rates-2022-8">record inflation</a> this year, many are cutting back on<a href="https://www.npd.com/news/press-releases/2022/consumers-eat-more-meals-at-home-bargain-grocery-shop-use-restaurants-less-to-offset-rising-costs-reports-iri-and-npd/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> restaurant visits</a>. That's hurting chains like Wingstop, which installed a new chief executive, Michael Skipworth, in <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/wingstop-announces-resignation-of-chairman-and-ceo-charlie-morrison-board-appoints-president-and-coo-michael-skipworth-as-successor-301502184.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">March</a>. In its last earnings call in late July, the company said customer visits are down. In an interview last week with Insider, Skipworth said he's betting on three plays to reverse that trend – entering the chicken sandwich wars, introducing bundled meal deals, and adding Uber Eats as a new delivery partner. That latter is a significant move as DoorDash has been the chain's exclusive delivery partner for years."We have a proven playbook," said Skipworth, who was previously Wingstop's chief operating officer and finance chief.Skipworth explains his three-pronged approach to increasing sales at Wingstop, which operates more than 1,800 restaurants worldwide. The majority of Wingstop stores are franchised locations in the US.<h2>Now is the right time to enter the chicken sandwich wars</h2>Three years ago, Popeyes introduced a spicy chicken sandwich that broke the internet and launched a war with Chick-fil-A. Other national fast food chains introduced their <a href="https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/food/brief-history-chicken-sandwich-wars" target="_blank" rel="noopener">versions of chicken sandwiches</a> over the course of a year, including Wendy's, Sonic, and KFC. Last year, it introduced the delivery-only brand Thighstop, a supply chain hack created to save the brand from soaring chicken wing prices. Before that, he said the previous new menu item the company launched was<a href="https://www.fastcasual.com/news/wingstop-adds-boneless-wings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> more than a decade ago when it introduced boneless wings. </a>Skipworth said he expects the chicken sandwich to bring "meaningful growth" to the brand because price-conscious consumers will be excited about the value of the new menu item. "We felt now is the right time for a chicken sandwich. We were able to leverage our size and scale and negotiate really good pricing with our strategic supplier partners," Skipworth said.The a la carte price of Wingstop's chicken sandwich is $5.49. By comparison, spicy chicken sandwiches cost $5.29 at Chick-fil-A and $4.49 at Popeyes. The crispy chicken sandwich at Shake Shack cost $7.79, according to prices found at those restaurants in Southern California. <h2>Wingstop expects to reach more delivery consumers with Uber Eats and DoorDash </h2>DoorDash introduced its white-label delivery platform, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-doordash-power-players-leading-the-food-delivery-app-2022-4#jessica-lachs-vice-president-analytics-and-data-science-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DoorDash Drive</a>, in 2016. Fast-casual chains Wingstop and Chipotle were early adopters of the program. DoorDash delivers orders made through Wingstop's app or website for a fee.Skipworth said that Wingstop had used DoorDash as an exclusive delivery partner since at least 2017. He described the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-grubhub-lost-the-delivery-war-to-doordash-2021-7">nation's top delivery provider</a> as "an incredible partner for us."But, with the "challenging backdrop in 2022," Skipworth said this summer was "a good opportunity" to look at adding another delivery operator.Wingstop chose Uber Eats because, like DoorDash, it has been "really smart about building loyalty" to its platform through subscription services that reach millions of consumers. DoorDash's DashPass, for example, has over 10 million members globally. "We knew there was this consumer base out there that we weren't serving today," Skipworth said of Uber Eats. "And we felt this was the right time to pull that lever in and again, bring more guests into Wingstop through the Uber platform."While there's some overlap between consumers who use DoorDash and Uber Eats, Skipworth said the data shows that both delivery apps serve "two distinct consumer groups."He said he doesn't expect a "meaningful impact to our existing DoorDash business." "While it's only a couple of weeks into the Uber Eats national launch, and without any advertising support, we are encouraged by the early results," Skipworth told investors during a conference call in July. By adding Uber Eats, Wingstop joins a fray of chains that have been breaking away from exclusive delivery partnerships to boost delivery sales. McDonald's dropped Uber Eats as an exclusive partner in 2019. During the pandemic, <a href="https://www.nrn.com/delivery-takeout-solutions/coronavirus-chipotle-mexican-grill-expands-free-delivery-new-uber-eats">Chipotle added Uber Eats </a>as a delivery partner after working with Postmates and DoorDash. <h2>Wingstop is leaning into value deals thanks to wing deflation</h2>Wingstop developed the virtual brand, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wingstop-debuts-delivery-only-chicken-brand-thighstop-2021-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thighstop</a>, last year to save money on soaring chicken wing prices, which reached $3.25 a pound in 2021.By creating a thigh-focused menu, a part of the bird the company never used, Wingstop saved money by buying whole chickens from suppliers. A year later, the price per pound is now $1.15 as demand for chicken wings cools, causing excess inventory and deflation, the CEO said.That is allowing Wingstop to "lean into" adding value deals to the menu, Skipworth said. One example that is driving traffic is the recently introduced Boneless Meal Deal. The $15.99 value meal includes 20 boneless wings and a large fry. "We saw a marked improvement in the sales trends during the quarter," Skipworth said.In 2021, Wingstop recorded its 18th consecutive year of same-store sales growth, a vital indicator of a company's financial health. By adding Uber Eats, leaning into value, and introducing chicken sandwiches, Skipworth said he's got a playbook that "sets the stage for 19 consecutive years of same-store sales growth."

Launched in 2017, the capital assist programme is a first-in-the-segment solution designed to bridge the financing gap and empower restaurant owners. Over 8,000 restaurants have availed loans so far, of which 3,000 availed loans in 2022 alone, the company said in a statement.
