He further underlined that to increase the participation of domestic industry, the government has reserved a certain portion of defence capital acquisition for domestic procurement. "Out of the total defence capital budget outlay, 68 per cent of it is reserved for indigenous procurement by domestic industry and 25 per cent for the private sector. The results of these have now started appearing and more measures will be announced soon," he emphasised. The government, he said, is also working to provide market access to the domestic industry to make them Aatmanirbhar. Singh said that in the last few years, there has been a continuous increase in defence exports. The government has already taken a series of steps including simplifying the FDI norms which have been increased to 74 per cent via automatic route and 100 per cent via government route, he added. The Defence Minister also urged the domestic industry and foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers to invest in Indian defence sector by focusing on R&amp;D, bringing in newer technologies and capital. He added that India is making defence products not just for the domestic market but also to meet the global requirements. "The world is waiting for the products made in India," he claimed. Govt committed to achieving defence production target of $22 bn by 2025: Rajnath

India has set a target to achieve a turnover of Rs 1.75 lakh crore ($25 billion) including export of Rs 35,000 Crore ($ 5 billion) in aerospace and <keyword id="8127101" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-goods">defence goods</keyword> and services by 2025. This is part of the <keyword id="9693161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="draft-defence-production">draft Defence Production</keyword> and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP 2020) announced on Sunday. Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> announced the draft policy through a tweet on Monday. "In order to provide impetus to self-reliance in Defence manufacturing and to position India amongst the leading countries of the world in Defence and Aerospace sectors, a draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020 (DPEPP 2020) has been formulated," he said. In implementing such framework and to position India amongst the leading countries of the world in defence and aerospace sectors, <keyword id="6369097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence">Ministry of Defence</keyword> (MoD) has formulated a draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020 (DPEPP 2020). The DPEPP 2020 is envisaged as overarching guiding document of MoD to provide a focused, structured and significant thrust to defence production capabilities of the country for self-reliance and exports. The policy proposes to develop a dynamic, robust and competitive defence industry, including <keyword id="9694649" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aerospace-and-naval-shipbuilding">aerospace and naval shipbuilding</keyword> industry to cater to the needs of armed forces with quality products. Draft defence policy aims to achieve ₹1.75 lakh crore turnover by 2025

New Delhi, Feb 7 () State-owned BHEL on Friday said it has entered into a pact with Bharat Electronics Ltd to develop and market products, systems and sensors for defence and non-defence applications. "A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) during DEFEXPO 2020 at Lucknow," BHEL said in a filing to the BSE. The pact aims at leveraging the complementary strengths and capabilities of BHEL and BEL to develop and market products, systems and sensors for defence and non-defence applications, the filing added. The MoU will also enable BHEL and BEL to make joint efforts to explore markets for products individually developed or jointly developed by both companies, it added. SID DRR

To expand the domestic <keyword id="2377476" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-manufacturing">defence manufacturing</keyword> ecosystem, a negative list of weapons and platforms would be notified with year-wise timelines for placing an embargo on import of such items from those dates. As per the draft <keyword id="9695994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-production-and-export-promotion-policy">Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy</keyword> (DPEPP 2020) announced on Monday, this list would be updated periodically, without compromising on the operational requirements of the Services, to allow lead-time to industry to prepare itself for any such procurement which is likely to come up, subsequent to the indicated embargo date. The policy proposes a Technology Assessment Cell (TAC) in coordination with the services, which would assess the industrial capability for design, development and production including re-engineering for production of various major systems like <keyword id="386104" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Armoured-Vehicles">armoured vehicles</keyword>, <keyword id="117400" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Submarines">submarines</keyword>, fighter aircraft, <keyword id="54022" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="helicopters">helicopters</keyword>, radars with the major industries in the country. A Project Management Unit (PMU), with representation from the Services, would be set up to support the acquisition process and facilitate management of the contracts. This setup would bring in expertise to the process of acquisition as well as create focus and synergy in building military capabilities. With self- reliance as the motto, aim is to move away from licensed production to Design, Develop and produce wherein the Nation owns the Design Rights and IP of the systems. "Our Armed forces have over the years acquired a range of platforms from diverse sources leading to a buildup of spares and consumables which has resulted in sub-optimal planning and resource allocation. Efforts would be made to adopt a family of weapons approach to standardize and optimize inventory and supply chain management," the policy said. In addition, efforts would be made to provide the industry greater visibility into the likely opportunities in the defence sector. Understanding future capital acquisition priorities will enable industry to develop technologies, carry out necessary ground work and position themselves in an optimal manner to compete at the appropriate time. In order to enhance procurement from domestic industry, it is incumbent that procurement is doubled from the current Rs 70,000 crore to Rs 1,40,000 crore by 2025. In order to achieve this objective, it is proposed to carve out a distinct budget head for domestic capital procurement. The policy will also strive for enhancing allocation for domestic capital procurement at the rate of minimum 15 per cent per annum for the next five years. Various studies have over the years brought out the need to enhance cost effectiveness and improve efficiency in the use of MoD's resources. Efforts would be made to scrutinize, evaluate and optimize various items of expenditure in the Defence budget. The policy says that investment promotion would be encouraged to provide specific focus on certain identified segments and technological areas. Investments in aviation sector which help in co-development and strengthening defence ecosystem would be facilitated in association with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Efforts would be made to address the identified gaps in those segments and offer incentives to global OEMs and domestic industry to set up design and manufacturing facilities in India. The investments in these segments would also be channelized by offering high multipliers through offsets obligations. Development of aero engines complex is a priority area. While significant improvements have been made, there are still critical gaps in the aero engine segment for future development programmes as well as for taking up the engine related MRO activities of the current inventory of platforms. The two Defence Corridors set up in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh would be specifically targeted by providing additional support as well as by offering higher multipliers for offset discharge for investments flowing into the Defence Corridors. India's new defence policy proposes a cell to re-engineer armoured vehicles, submarines, fighter aircraft, helicopters and more

India is preparing country-wise profiles of defence products and platforms to promote their exports and the government will stand "side by side" with the domestic industry in this endeavour through diplomatic channels, a senior Defence Ministry official said Monday. Raj Kumar, secretary, Department of Defence Production, said at a webinar that the domestic defence industry will hold web interactions with the representatives of friendly countries to figure out what kind of products and platforms they require. "We are preparing country-wise profiles of products, weapons and platforms which are probably needed by our friendly countries. So we are now planning to start web interaction led by the industry," Kumar said. "That country's defence attache, our DPSUs (defence public sector undertakings), industry, will then figure out what is in the store for us to promote there for exports," he said. Kumar said the government will be standing side by side with the domestic industry through its defence attaches, embassies and diplomatic channels to promote exports. To promote indigenous production, the Defence Ministry on August 9 announced restrictions on import of 101 weapons and military platforms including light combat helicopters, conventional submarines and cruise missiles under a staggered timeline till 2024. Kumar said a second list of import-restricted defence items will be notified soon. "This is the first list we are examining and then a second list will also come. We expect you (industry) to come forward and start investing to meet our requirements," he said at the webinar -- "Army Make Projects 2020" -- organised by FICCI. The senior official said as successful domestic bidders move to the defence equipment production stage, his department will share their details with the UP and Tamil Nadu defence corridor authorities, who "will compete in attracting your units to their respective states". He said since the three services are making efforts to push the "Make II" category of defence production projects, he will interact with project participants to understand their concerns and share best practices among the services. As secretary of the Department of Defence Production, Kumar heads the collegiate committee that approves the "Make II" category of projects. Under the Make II category, no government funding is given to the Indian company for the prototype development process. If a prototype developed by the company meets the standards set by the armed forces, an order is placed for such equipment or platforms. "Everything, whether it is defence industrial corridor, or whether it is defence production and export promotion policy, or whether it is a negative list - everything works in the same direction that we have to be among the top producers of defence items," he said. On August 9, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the ministry was now ready for a "big push" to indigenous defence manufacturing in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for an "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India). India is one of the most lucrative markets for global defence giants. The country has figured among the top three global importers of military hardware for the last eight years. After import embargo, India is creating country profiles for its defence exports

The Ministry of Defence will soon come out with a new set of guidelines and norms that will work as Standard-Operating-Procedures (SOP) for foreign companies seeking higher ownership beyond the existing 49% foreign direct investment (FDI) that is currently allowed in defence production.<o:p></o:p>
 India’s <keyword id="2619377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-minister-Manohar-Parrikar">Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar</keyword> has already stated that he was open to considering higher FDI in defence production on a case-to-case basis. However, presently, there are no guidelines or SOP in place to decide on cases where higher foreign ownership is proposed.

	“India may soon announce guidelines to increase the 49% cap on foreign direct investment (FDI) in defence production allowing foreign companies, with the latest cutting edge technology, to set shop in the country. These guidelines are being finalised so that the department of defence can take a view on the dozen odd proposals by leading global players,” said a senior government official.<o:p></o:p>

	At a recent meeting of the top brass of defence ministry with the industry, it was indicated that the norms and guidelines for allowing over 49% FDI in defence production are being finalised.<o:p></o:p>

	Sources in the know said a draft Cabinet note has been readied in this regard following inter-ministerial consultations on the issue of higher FDI in defence production.

	However, as against having fixed norms, the department of defence is understood to have proposed taking a view on a case to case basis and on the merits of the proposal.<o:p></o:p>

	French company DCNS has proposed to set up a wholly-owned Indian subsidiary to develop advanced systems for submarines.

	“Many foreign companies have approached the government to set up wholly owned Indian subsidiaries to develop crucial modern defence systems. But due to lack of guidelines, the clarity is missing and global companies have expressed concerns on the same. These new guidelines will detail a specific roadmap for international companies that are planning to make big investments in India’s defence production,” an official said.<o:p></o:p>

	“Our FDI norms will need to watch out for the real intents and the encumbrances on the technology flow through export controls and denial regimes to make Make-in-India a success,” he said.<o:p></o:p>

	“The caution indeed has to be exercised as going by the past experience, whenever a new sector is opened up there is a honeymoon time that gets in many new entrants. Aviation sector is one such glaring example to point. All new entrants use high pitch and try to create differentiators but they will have to eventually deliver promises through building shear track record through physical delivery on a sustained basis,” said an industry source.<o:p></o:p>

	So while the government puts in place these new norms and guidelines, care needs to be taken that this does not result in mere creation of a “front” but instead build skill sets and capabilities to enhance indigenous content.<o:p></o:p>

	The need of the hour is to create centres of excellence to enhance not only the indigenous content but gradually built sustainability through geographic spread of markets in a calibrated way, said an industry leader.<o:p></o:p>

	This, he said, is welcome as the Indian requirements are diverse and technologies constantly move with time needing fresh inputs in technology all the time.

Foreign cos can own up to 74% in Indian defence soon, on a case-to-case basis

The <keyword id="43909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-ministry">defence ministry</keyword> is all set to rope in private players for mega military production orders. It has come up with a list of criteria that the private sector must fulfil. The ministry will unveil the elaborate procedure in a new policy soon. ET reported, a new strategic policy (SP) model will be created and six Indian companies will be accorded special status. Once the pool is created, the companies will be given the opportunity to bid for mega defence production orders, expected to be worth over $20 billion. Here is the list of norms that private players will have to fulfil: 1.In the first stage, six Indian companies will qualify to bid for four upcoming projects - <keyword id="117400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Submarines">submarines</keyword> for the navy, a single-engine fighter for the air force, helicopters and armoured vehicles for the army. The companies must have a minimum turnover of Rs 4,000 crore for the past three years. 2.Financial strength, technical capability and existing infrastructure will be the main criteria for selection of the Indian companies. For foreign players, the selection process will be based on technical and commercial grounds. 3.Foreign partners will be roped in for the four identified projects. This selection will be based on technical evaluations and field trials. Once the foreign vendors are shortlisted, the Indian pool will be invited to plan collaborations and present joint proposals that will be the basis of a final selection. 4.Only one Indian company can participate in only one strategic partnership project. "The defence ministry will shortly invite companies for the qualification process. The companies will be asked to give their priority preference for the four projects. A total of six companies will be selected based on financial parameters and capability,” a senior official told ET.

The report stated that the <keyword id="20861069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-shift" source="keywords">global shift</keyword> towards a China+1 strategy and the impact of the <keyword id="20016971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia-Ukraine-war" source="keywords">Russia-Ukraine war</keyword> offer India additional opportunities to fill supply chain gaps, potentially boosting its share in the <keyword id="23046732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-defence-industry" source="keywords">global defence industry</keyword>. The report noted that the country's long-term goal is to become a global defence manufacturing hub is driven by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private enterprises, start-ups, and MSMEs. "Indian defence exports have grown multi-fold from INR 15 bn in 2017 to INR 210 bn in 2024 at a CAGR of 46%. The China + 1 strategy and the Russia-Ukraine war provides an additional opportunity for India to fill the gap created in the supply chain and hence increase its contribution to the global defence industry," the report read. The report added that to achieve this target a well-developed domestic ecosystem is crucial as lower import content in products accelerates approvals by reducing international conflicts. The report added that the Ministry of Defence has taken key initiatives to attract Indian private players and global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) include establishing aerospace parks and defence corridors, fast-tracking project approvals, and enhancing development and testing facilities. Highlighting the potential in India's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) segment the report explained that it holds a significant potential for global aerospace companies due to its technical expertise and cost-competitive solutions. "India provides a huge opportunity in the <keyword id="23046733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MRO-segment" source="keywords">MRO segment</keyword> for global aerospace leaders given the expertise the country provides as well as the cost efficiency solutions compared to its global competitors" the report added. India aims to increase domestic defence turnover to Rs 3 lac crore by 2029, Rs 500 billion targeted for exports. This growth will help reduce the Government of India's import bill as India remains the world's largest importer of defence equipment. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative of the government, 75 per cent of the defence capital outlay is now reserved for domestic players, up from 49 per cent in FY21. Given the geopolitical challenges and modernisation needs of its Armed Forces, the report added that India plans to invest Rs 8.3 lac crore in domestic procurement, offering substantial business opportunities for local companies. "India intends to place orders worth INR 8.3 trn through domestic procurement and thus it presents a massive business opportunity for local players" it added. As per the Ministry of Defence, India's defence manufacturing sector has witnessed an increase of 16.8 per cent in the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant increase marks the highest-ever growth in the country's defence production value. The total value of defence production reached Rs 1,26,887 crore this year, up from the previous year's figures.

India's defence exports surge to Rs 210 billion after global shift towards China+1, Russia-Ukraine war: Report

The workers are protesting against the government’s move to corporatise the factories which produce defence equipment. The Indian government had decided to convert the ordnance factory, which is currently government-owned into a corporation or a PSU. This enraged its 80,000 workers across 41 ordnance factories. The Indian Ordnance Factories organisation - a family of 41 ordnance factories – is into defence production including production, testing, logistics, research, development and marketing of a comprehensive product range of land, sea and air systems. As the month-long strike began, representatives from the three trade trade unions — the Bharatiya Pratiraksha Mazdoor Sangh, the Indian National Defence Workers Federation, and the All India Defence Employees Federation – released a joint statement. “The strike has commenced at 6 am and the entire workforce are staying away from work, resulting in scaling down of the defence production to zero level. Strike was a total success in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh (Jabalpur, Katni), Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Chandigarh, where the ordnance factories are located. The strike was a total success at ordnance factory board headquarters, Kolkata,” <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/national/strike-total-at-all-41-ordnance-factories-say-unions-on-day-one/article29183842.ece">the statement said.</a> The Indian government will also set up a high-level committee to draw a roadmap for the ordnance factories and analyse the turning of it into a public sector unit.

India’s 41 ordnance factories come to grinding halt as its 80,000 workers go on strike

<keyword id="9171" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anil-Ambani">Anil Ambani</keyword> is stepping into defence industry and how. After he acquired the Pipavav shipyard, Ambani is now creating a cluster of companies and applying for licences to design, develop and manufacture military equipment ranging from UAVs and spacecraft to submarine systems. 
 His <keyword id="2900225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Defence-Limited">Reliance Defence Limited</keyword> (RDL) has quietly raised 11 new companies focused on defence - each of them targeting a potential market of at least Rs 10,000 crore. 
Executives told Economic Times that these companies would be used as joint venture partners with foreign manufacturers looking at the ‘Make in India’ initiative or for licence production of equipment. It is also looking to export defence products from India. 
 
Ambani also wants to beyond ship building and helicopter manufacturing, and has applied for at least 13 new licences to develop and produce military systems, with the hope for clearances by the end of this year. 
 
"The group will aim at a leadership position in the sector and is committed to deliver on time and give the best value proposition," Rajesh Dhingra, President, Reliance Defence &amp;Aerospace Pvt Ltd told ET, confirming the developments. 
 
The financial daily reported the applications show that RDL is keen on entering the core markets of land systems, unmanned aviation, defence electronics, submarine construction, production of missiles and development of engines for all platforms. 
 
The firm has also sought permission to manufacture spacecraft and satellites. 
 
RDL is also looking at the lucrative maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business for both aircraft and naval vessels. 
 
Senior executives told ET that the company has been getting positive responses from global defence manufacturers that have been in talks over the past few months. 
As reported by ET, Anil Ambani has been personally driving the defence business and has met the leadership of almost all major defence manufacturers around the world. "The response from global OEMs has been exceptional and commitments received have the potential of transforming Indian defence industry in the next ten years," Dhingra told the financial daily. 
 
The business plan of RDL is believed to be based on the estimation that the requirement of military hardware in the next decade would exceed $250 billion. 
 
The company has also been on a hiring spree, picking up executives for its head office in Delhi as well as preparing the formal takeover of the Pipavav Shipyard. 
 
It is also in the race for several defence contracts, including a $2 billion order for landing platform docks (LPDs) which is nearing finalisation and two helicopter manufacturing projects worth over $3 billion that are in the initial stages.

Defence Minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> has said that India's military preparedness has to be fully backed by weapon systems made in India, along with other indigenous platforms via a healthy competition between both the public and the private sectors. This, he said would guarantee peace in the region. "No country can indefinitely win wars and battles only on the strength of trying to buy or import equipment from outside. Its security preparedness would be incomplete if it relies only on that," he was quoted saying. Jaitley was present at an awards function for defence PSUs, where he was speaking in the backdrop of the recently finalised "strategic partnership (SP)" policy. This policy has been finalised by the government to expand the role of country’s private sector in defence production. Defence minister also stressed on the need for India to unleash its own potential so that it can become an arms-manufacturing hub. India imports around 65% of its military hardware and software, owing to sloppy performance by the <keyword id="6355142" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword> and its 50 labs, five defence PSUs, four shipyards, and the 41 ordnance factories. Other than this, the failure to lure the private sector into defence production can also be cited as a reason behind the huge levels of imports. "Security requirements are dictated by the kind of neighbourhood you have, and obviously in view of the peculiar situation here from a geopolitical point of view, our preparedness is the best deterrent and which is a guarantee for peace as far as our region is concerned," said Jaitley. Talking of the SP policy, he said, "Healthy competition between defence PSUs and the private sector will bring out the best potential."

The <keyword id="32723" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="defence" source="Orion">defence</keyword> ministry has approved a fresh list of 928 components and subsystems which will only be procured from the domestic industry after a ban on their import kicks in under a staggered time-line of around five-and-half years. The ministry on Sunday said the aim of the move is in sync with the government's overall aim to promote 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence production. It is the fourth such "positive indigenisation list (PIL)" comprising line replacement units, sub-systems and components used for various military platforms, equipment and weapons. "To promote 'Aatmanirbharta' in defence and minimise imports by defence public sector undertakings, the <keyword id="6369097" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence" source="Orion">Ministry of Defence</keyword> has approved fourth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important line replacement units/sub-systems/spares and components, including high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," the ministry said in a statement. The aim of the indigenisation list is also to minimise imports by the defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs). The defence ministry has set specific timelines for import ban of the items, spanning the period from December 2023 to December 2028. This list is in continuation to the three similar PILs that were brought out in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022 "These lists contain 2,500 items which are already indigenised and 1,238 (351+107+780) items which will be indigenised within the given timelines," the ministry said. Of the 1,238, 310 items have been indigenised so far, it said. The items which were already indigenised comprised 262 from the first PIL, 11 from the second list and 37 from the third PIL, according to the ministry. "The DPSUs will undertake indigenisation of these items through different routes under 'Make' category and in-house development through the capabilities of MSMEs and private Indian industry, thereby providing impetus to the growth in economy, enhanced investment in defence and reduction in import dependence of DPSUs," the ministry said. "In addition, this will augment the design capabilities of the domestic defence industry by involving academia and research institutions," it said. In a tweet, Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="Orion">Rajnath Singh</keyword> said the Narendra Modi government is committed towards indigenisation and ensuring self reliance in the defence sector. "Keeping this in mind, the 4th Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important Line Replacement Units (LRUs)/Sub-systems/Spares and Components has been approved," he said. "The list includes high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," Singh added. The ministry said DPSUs will soon initiate procurement action for these notified items. In the last few years, the government has taken a series of measures to promote domestic defence production. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is one of the largest importers of arms globally. According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement over the next five years. The government now wants to reduce dependence on imported military platforms and has decided to support domestic defence manufacturing. The defence ministry has set a goal of a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing in the next five years which includes an export target of USD 5 billion worth of military hardware. Govt approves 4th 'positive indigenisation list' of sub-systems to promote domestic defence industry

<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s status has been elevated from a trading partner to Strategic <keyword id="44844" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trade">Trade</keyword> Authorization status (STA-1). </li><li>This might make India more favourable to the Communications, Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA). </li><li>Strict control and licensing on the sale of high-tech <keyword id="32723" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence">defence</keyword> and non-defence products between the two countries will also be eased. </li></ul>On Monday, the <keyword id="6354458" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="US">US</keyword> elevated India’s status from a trading partner to Strategic Trade Authorization status (STA-1) which is the status that it has given only to 36 countries that are largely NATO allies. India is the only south-asian country on this list. This means that the US has eased export restrictions on high-technology product sales to India and authorises India to export, re-export and transfer (in-country) specified items. The status is very important under the US export control regime, and publicly acknowledges US-India security and economic relationship. This will increase and speed up the sale of high-tech defence and non-defence products between the two nations, that are otherwise subjected to strict controls and licensing. India will now be able to access latest defense technologies as easily as US’ closest allies. It might also accelerate the talk in India about signing the Communications, Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) , which is a pact that will allow high-end secured communication equipment. It is one of the three agreements that the US has with its closest military allies and though that seems positive, India has concerns about giving away access to sensitive military communication if it signs the agreement with the US. Interestingly, this new status for India came at a time when the country has finalised its decision to go in for a missile defence system from the US to protect parts of the capital -New Delhi. One of the main reasons behind India's elevation could be that India and the US share an interest in countering China's expanding economic and military power. The US has become one of India’s top arms supplier, selling more than $15 billion of weapons over the past decade.
