Data is the new gold and there are a lot of thieves who are stealing it. From time to time, debit card and credit card information is stolen as well. Earlier this month, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/4-lakh-indian-debit-and-credit-cards-are-selling-for-9-apiece-on-the-dark-web/articleshow/74028856.cms">report</a> revealed that over 4 lakh Indian debit and credit cars were being sold online, for $9 each.<br /><br />This is not the only instance when Indian debit and <keyword id="6387037" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-cards">credit cards</keyword> were spotted on the <keyword id="1929208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="dark-web">dark web</keyword>. Last year, Group-IB <a href="https://www.group-ib.com/media/biggest-card-database-ever/">found</a> over 13 lakh Indian debit and credit cards on sale on Joker’s Stash, a dark web underground card shop.<br /><br />You must be wondering how debit and credit cards end up on the dark web and why. In this post, we will explain how your financial data ends up on the dark web and how it is misused.<br /><br /><strong>How do debit and credit cards end up on the dark web?<br /></strong><br />There are several ways how your debit and credit card information could be stolen and sold on the dark web. The most common methods include hacking into businesses, card skimming, installing malware on your devices and using fake websites.<br /><br />As per Group-IB, the recent breach of “data is likely to have been compromised online — with the use of phishing, malware, or JS-sniffers.”<br /><br /><strong>What happens when your debit and credit card info reaches the dark web?<br /></strong><br />When card information is stolen, the thieves make a ‘database’ or a ‘dump’ of the information to make a sale. The card details are sold with the necessary details to make the purchase, such as the card number, card holder’s name and the CVV number.<br /><br />It must be noted that while the transactions that are routed through Indian payment gateways require a second layer of authentication in the form of OTPs, this layer is not mandatory for payment gateways outside of the country. In most instances, the card number, CVV and the expiration date is enough to complete a transaction. This allows your stolen card to be used by scammers for completing unauthorized transactions.<br /><br />Stolen cards are often used to purchase prepaid cards and other online services as a lack of address makes it harder to trace, allowing the person to use the card for a longer period. <br /><ul><li>Google announced that its bringing tokenisation of credit and debit cards to Google Pay during their annual event, <keyword id="8120597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-india-2019">Google for India 2019</keyword>.<br /></li><li>This will allow users to mask their real card numbers when making payments to third party merchants using Google Pay.<br /></li><li>Tokenisation shares a random token number rather than the actual number of the card to conduct the transaction.<br /></li></ul>Google Pay’s is finally bringing its tokenisation system to India — a feature which allows you to mask your real debit and credit card numbers before making a payment.<br /><br />It was launched in India four years after it was available worldwide. Yet, Caesar Sengupta, Google’s General Manager and Vice President of Payments and Next Billion Users stated, “India is setting the global standard on how to digitise payments,” during the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/google-for-india-2019-everything-you-need-to-know/articleshow/71199981.cms">Google for India 2019</a>.<br /><br />Tokenisation allows users to hide their card numbers by issuing a digital token bound their devices, to make a transaction. Once the transaction is complete, the token ceases to exist.<br /><br />It’s a lot like exchanging money for tokens at a casino, according to <a href="https://www.advantio.com/blog/mobile-payments-with-digital-wallets-and-tokenization-how-google-pay-apple-pay-and-samsung-pay-protect-your-card-details">Advantio</a> — a cyber security research organisation.<br /><br />A visitor is the only person who can exchange their money for tokens and vice versa. Should someone else try and use that token — they would not be able to at another casino.<br /><br />Advantio calls this ‘devaluation’ since it deters crime and limits the thief’s field of action.<br /><br /><strong>How does tokenisation work?<br /></strong><br />There are two ways in which tokenisation works. <br /><br />One, is the tap and pay method. Users just have to tap their phones against a Bharat QR or near field connectivity (NFC) terminal to make a payment. If the transaction in under ₹2,000, there’s no need to input their PIN number.<br /><br />In order for this to work, the user’s smartphone needs to be NFC-capable.<br /><br />Even for online transactions, tokenised cards can be used to make payments without disclosing the user’s card number to the vendor or merchant through Google Pay. Call the retailer in question's customer service to make sure your payments are cancelled. Some might even ask you to cancel in writing, so check the fine print.</p><p>Once you do that, call your bank again and tell them you've revoked authorization for the company to take recurring transfers from your account. If you haven't canceled payments from the retailer, you can also complete what's called a "stop payment" with your bank. Typically you'll need to submit a request in writing, but check with your bank on the proper procedure to do so.</p><h3>4. Monitor your bank account</h3><p>Once you cancel your debit card, write down a confirmation number and the customer representative's name (if applicable) in case you any problems arise. Follow up in writing</h3><p>The FTC recommends following up a request to cancel a debit card in writing. In a letter to your bank, include when your card went missing, when you reported the loss, and your debit card number. Be prepared to put money in the account immediately.</p><p>Some checking accounts might also have activity requirements, which dictate how often you must be depositing money or using the account in order to avoid paying fees. Also, you'll probably want to choose a bank or credit union with a wide network of ATMs in your area, which you should be able to use to withdraw cash without paying fees.</p><p>You will need to complete paperwork and some type of application to open a checking account. Typically, several forms of valid identification are needed, which could include a combination of driver's license, passport and/or Social Security card. People under are 18 may need an adult to co-sign on the account.</p><h3>2. Ask for your debit card</h3><p>When you are opening your checking account, tell the banking representative you would like a debit card to be linked to your account. Like any other password, your PIN should be kept private; it provides access to important services like the ability to withdraw cash, change personal information, and more. If your bank does that, it will tell you upfront.</p><p>Ideally, you'll want to choose an ATM that does not charge a fee (which is why you took this into consideration in Step 1). Even $1 or $2 at a time adds up. Plus, why should you have to pay to access your money?</p><p>If there is a fee, make sure to check your statement to ensure the fee was charged correctly. Also, be aware that this fee is deducted from your checking account balance - you can't opt out of paying the fee.</p><h3>6. Act quickly if your debit card is lost or stolen</h3><p>Because your debit card pulls funds directly from your checking account, it's important to take swift action if your card is lost or stolen. The quicker you can have your bank or credit union cancel the card, the less opportunity someone has to use your card to make purchases or withdraw cash.</p><p>"Pick up the phone," says Joshua Hastings, founder of <a href="https://moneylifewax.com/">Money Life Wax</a>. "Call your financial institution to notify them it has been lost or stolen. How to get a debit card so you can withdraw cash from an ATM

<p><span class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to a </span><a href="http://www.bankrate.com/finance/consumer-index/financial-security-charts-0514.aspx">Bankrate survey</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, 40% of people carry less than $20 of cash in their wallets.</span></p>
<p>So unless you're buying something really small, your payment options are limited to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/credit-debit-or-cash-2014-9">debit or credit</a>.</p>
<p>So how do you decide between the two?</p>
<p>We talked to certified financial planner Alan Moore, founder of <a href="http://www.serenityfc.com/">Serenity Financial Consulting</a>, to see in which instances you should put away the debit card and default to credit.</p>
<p>Moore's first suggestion was to check what kind of fraud protection your bank provides for your debit card.</p>
<p>"By law, if a consumer's credit card gets stolen, they are responsible for the first $50 of stolen money, and the credit card company must cover the rest," Moore says.</p>
<p>"For debit cards, consumers are responsible for the first $500 of expenses," he continues. "While these are the legal limits, some banks choose to provide better fraud protection coverage for debit cards. USAA, for instance, covers 100% of the stolen funds, not just money after $500."</p>
<p>Moore advises that if you're one of the many people who would be responsible for the first $500 should your debit card be stolen, you'll want to use your credit card when there's more money at stake, or your card's information might be less secure.</p>
<p>These are the cases when it's safer and smarter to steer clear of your debit card in favor of credit:</p>
<h3>Online purchases</h3>
<p>Moore says that when buying online from major vendors such as Amazon, using a debit card shouldn't present any problems. However, if you're buying from a smaller or less-established company, Moore advises sticking to a credit card, since you just never know what those companies are doing with your card data.</p>
<p>"It is impossible to know if the vendor is protecting your data as well as they should," he says, "so erring on the side of caution is good."</p>
<h3>Travel expenses</h3>
<p>Traveling isn't cheap and it's something that is often booked way in advance. There's no guarantee that something won't come up before a big trip that would cause you to cancel it. For this reason, Moore suggests using credit cards with built in travel protection.</p>
<p>"This can provide a safety net for if your trip gets canceled to due to illness or weather," Moore explains. "Be sure to book hotels, rental cars, and flights on your credit card. Debit cards rarely have built in travel protections."</p>
<h3>Small vendors</h3>
<p>You're at a flea market and you find an antique that would be perfect for your home, but the vendor wants to write down your debit card information. Moore says switch to a credit card. In fact, he has first-hand experience with this, since his debit card number was once stolen after a vendor recorded it.</p>
<p>Not all small vendors call for cash or a credit card, though. "As long as the vendor is using a reputable processor like Square or QuickBooks, then I wouldn't be worried [about a debit card]," Moore says.</p>
<h3>Gas stations</h3>
<p>Moore sees only one problem with people using debit to pay for gas: If you're the kind of person to carry a relatively low balance in the account linked to your debit card, you may want to use credit.</p>
<p>"The one argument that I've heard on why you shouldn't use a debit card at a gas station is because gas stations put holds on funds in your account to be sure you have enough to cover the purchase, and that can cause other checks/purchases to bounce," Moore explains.</p>

Gather your information</h3><p>You'll need to have some details on hand for any of the routes you pick to check your debit card balance. Get your debit card and have your PIN number on hand, and you should be good to go.</p><h3>2. Call customer service</h3><p>One way to check your account balances (if you don't have an online account or don't want to go to the ATM or bank branch) is to simply call your bank. After providing the customer service representative with your account and PIN numbers, he or she should be able to let you know your current debit card balance. Some banks have automated systems that will tell you balance in your checking account - and therefore your debt card - once you've confirmed your identity.</p><h3>3. Log onto your account online</h3><p>If you already have an online account with your bank, checking your debit card balance online is probably the easiest way to do so. Head to the bank's website and type in your credentials to log in (typically a username and password).</p><h3>4. Create an online account</h3><p>If you don't have an online account, you can set one up by clicking on a link that will probably say something like  "create an account" or "register." Head to an ATM</h3><p>If you need to take cash out anyway, heading to an ATM to check your balance can cross two things off your list at once. Check your bank's website for a location finder to find the ATM nearest to you. Using another bank's ATM may cost you a fee, although most banks allow you to at least check your balance from an outside ATM for free.</p><h3>8. Insert your debit card</h3><p>Whether it's a drive-up or walk-up ATM, in order to check your balance and withdraw money, you'll need to put in your debit card and enter your PIN to gain access to your account.</p><h3>9. Select the option for a balance inquiry</h3><p>Different banks may have slightly different home screens for ATMs, but most have a button that says something along the lines of "balance inquiry" or "bank balance" that you can select to view your balance. Depending on your bank, the balance will either be displayed directly on the ATM screen or printed out on a receipt.</p><h3>10. Log out of the ATM</h3><p>Some ATMs will log you off automatically, but you always want to make sure the screen has returned to the home page before you leave an ATM where you've just entered all your account details.</p><h3>11. See a customer service rep inside the bank</h3><p>If you're already at the bank, you could also head inside to check with a customer service representative in person about your debit card balance. How to check your debit card balance to see how much money you have left to spend

"This malware affected customer payment card information used at potentially all Wawa locations beginning at different points in time after March 4, 2019 and until it was contained." </p><p>According to Gheysens, in-store payment processing systems were impacted by the data breach starting in March. By late April, the malware was running on payment processing systems in most Wawa locations. </p><p>The data breach affected credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates, and cardholder names for potentially all purchases made in Wawa locations and at fuel dispensers. No other personal information was accessed, including PIN numbers, credit card CVV2 numbers, and driver's license information. ATM cash machines located in Wawa locations were also not impacted. </p><p>Gheysens said that the company believed the malware no longer posed a risk to Wawa customers and that the company has "initiated an investigation, notified law enforcement and payment card companies, and engaged a leading external forensics firm to support our response efforts." </p><p>Wawa is encouraging customers to review their credit and debit card account statements. The company is also providing customers who may have been impacted a free year of identity theft protection and credit monitoring via Experian. The lower limit will be applicable from 31 October. The withdrawal limit has been imposed on Classic &amp; Maestro debit cards. However, the account holders with higher card variants can continue to benefit from the regular daily withdrawals.<br /><br />The average cash withdrawals from ATMs per card have been examined to be less than ₹20,000 a day and the lower limit will help in checking frauds and promote digital transactions.<br /><br />SBI alerted its account holders, the ones with the Classic and Maestro debit cards, regarding the reduction in the limits about a month ago. The users with Gold and Platinum cards will continue to enjoy higher withdrawal limits of ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh a day, respectively. The bank has asked its customers to upgrade to the higher variants to enjoy higher ATM withdrawals.<br /><br />The <a href="https://www.sbi.co.in/">SBI</a> website had put out the following message on the website:<br /><br />“Daily cash withdrawal limit for Classic and Maestro debit cards has been reduced from ₹40,000 to ₹20,000 per day with effect from October 31.<br /><br />If you require higher daily cash withdrawal limit, please apply for a higher card variant.”<br /><br />The bank has initiated the lower limit to reduce fraudulent transactions and encourage cashless transactions. As reported by <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/business-news/sbi-halves-daily-atm-withdrawal-limit-to-rs-20k-for-certain-card-holders-from-october-31/story-qnfx5bBNW7oC1pyWgeUQYK.html">Hindustan Times</a>, the ATM transactions were analysed and it was found that majority of the frauds reported to the bank happened to be of ₹40,000 that is the maximum limit per day. The reduced withdrawal limit was picked to protect customers and encourage digital transactions, SBI Managing Director PK Gupta explained. <br /><br />As per <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/banking/finance/banking/sbi-halves-daily-atm-cash-withdrawal-limit-to-rs-20000/articleshow/66021831.cms">reports</a>, multiple cases in the past saw a trend of stealing debit card PIN numbers via hidden cameras and electronic devices. <p>Ne'er-do-wells can purchase the card numbers in batches of one million at between $20 and $100 per card. A lucrative enterprise for whoever's responsible, indeed.</p>
<p>Not only are victims susceptible to fraudulent purchases, but as Krebs explains, if they used their card as a debit card and entered their pin numbers, their cash is vulnerable as well:</p>

If the dumps are from debit cards and the thieves also have access to the PINs for those cards, they can use the cloned cards at ATMs to pull cash out of the victim's bank account.</span></p>
