India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

Her father, the leader of the hamlet frowns upon it. But it has little to no effect on her, because the bicycle was her key to freedom, and symbolic of the agency she now had over her life. <div type="image" title="Students of Government Manorama Vidyapith Girls High School in Patna (2009)" agency="BCCL" msid="113057493" hostid="261"></div> Similarly, a girl in her neighbouring village would deflate her cycle’s tyres every day, and bury the key somewhere far from the reach of her brother, to stop him from using it. Why were these young women so territorial and proud over a seemingly modest mode of commute to their school? How is it related to Bihar, and how has something as small and insignificant as a bicycle paved the way for a broader movement of woman empowerment? Read on to find out! <h2>Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana</h2>Being one of the most impoverished states in India, Bihar is plagued with a large gender gap in school attendance. This gap in attendance in schools only grows with age. The enrollment of girls in primary school is satisfactory, largely due to the availability of primary schools and the introduction of schemes like the midday meal. However, distance remains a huge barrier in the hinterlands, pushing them further away from attending secondary school. In 2006, the Nitish Kumar-led state government, launched the Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana, a pioneering cash-for-kind program to empower girls through education. The program initially provided ₹2000 to 14-year-old girls enrolled in 9th grade, enabling them to purchase bicycles. This initiative was designed to address one of the most significant barriers to education for girls in Bihar—long distances to secondary schools. But, how profound were the implications of this policy intervention? In 2008, <a href="https://www.nishithprakash.com">Professor Nishith Prakash</a> from Northeastern University and <a href="https://econweb.ucsd.edu/~kamurali/index.html">Professor Kartik Muralidharan</a> of the University of California, San Diego embarked on a study to gauge the policy’s impact with support from the International Growth Centre (IGC). Their research found that this bicycle program increased age-appropriate secondary school enrolment for girls aged 14-15 by 32%. It also reduced the gender gap in enrolment by 40%. Moreover, the number of girls appearing for and passing the 10th-grade exam rose by 18% and 12%, respectively. The success of this initiative highlighted the transformative power of providing a bicycle. Inspired by the Bihar program's success, Professor Prakash later collaborated with <a href="https://worldbicyclerelief.org">World Bicycle Relief (WBR)</a> and Zambia's Ministry of General Education to implement a similar initiative in the Southern province of Zambia. <h2>After Bihar, why Zambia?</h2>Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa that has made significant strides in improving access to primary education with near-universal primary school enrolment. However, the story, when it comes to girls in secondary education, is markedly different. The drop-off for girls, as they transition to secondary education is stark. According to the World Bank’s 2015 report ‘Policy Brief: Zambia,’ their enrolment fell to just 61% at the lower secondary level. The same report states that girls drop out of school at double the rate of boys in Grade 7 and triple the rate of boys by Grade 11. <h2>A tough road to secondary school</h2>Transitioning to, and completing secondary education is particularly challenging for girls, primarily due to barriers like school fees, long distances to school, and societal factors such as teenage pregnancy and child marriage. These challenges are even more pronounced in rural areas. Additionally, this transition to secondary school often coincides with the onset of menstruation, which brings its own set of challenges. The lack of menstrual hygiene facilities in schools, coupled with the stigma and lack of awareness surrounding menstruation, further exacerbates the already significant gap in girls' education. Nearly 98% of girls in their sample reported walking to school, spending an average of 110 minutes commuting just one way, as reported in a <a href="https://www.cesifo.org/en/publications/2022/working-paper/wheels-change-transforming-girls-lives-bicycles">new study</a> authored by Professor Nishith Prakash and his collaborators. Alarmingly, 35% of these girls reported experiencing sexual harassment during their commute, highlighting just how perilous a journey many face in their pursuit of education. This <a href="https://www.cesifo.org/en/publications/2022/working-paper/wheels-change-transforming-girls-lives-bicycles">intervention</a> was introduced in Zambia, providing bicycles to girls in 100 schools across three districts, and the results were promising. Overall absenteeism dropped by 29%, translating to an additional five school days per year for girls in the Southern Province, where the average primary school student missed 18 days annually. Girls in the schools who received the bicycles were 38% less likely to drop out of school compared to those in the schools who did not receive the bicycles. <h2>Pedalling towards a safer commute</h2>The impact of these bicycles extended beyond just improved attendance. The program also led to enhanced perceptions of safety among the girls. One year after the intervention, girls in the treatment group reported a 22% reduction in instances of being teased or harassed on their way to school. Additionally, the probability of girls missing school or leaving early due to safety concerns dropped by 39%. Post the success of this program, the United States Agency For International Development (USAID) awarded $3.5 million to fund bicycles for growth initiatives to increase access in rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, mainly Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia. Additionally, the Ministry of General Education (Zambia) scaled up the cycle program in several districts in Zambia. Simply put, the bicycles in Bihar and Zambia gave young girls the agency of making choices for themselves. While the immediate benefit of these programs was providing the means for women to travel to school, the long-term impact reveals significant shifts in attitudes among both the women involved and the communities around them! But did you know that the use of bicycles to provide women with this much-needed agency isn’t new and was actively instituted by women during the suffrage movement of the 19th century — a decades-long fight to win the right to vote for women in the United States? <h2>Corsets to cycles: The Suffrage movement &amp; bicycles</h2> <div type="image" title="A woman with a bicycle in early 1900s" msid="113057788" hostid="261"></div> In the late 19th century, during the American industrial revolution, a seemingly simple invention sparked a movement that would forever change women's lives — the bicycle. As the country experienced a ‘bicycle craze,’ the first wave of the women’s rights movement was gaining momentum. The bicycle quickly became more than just a mode of transportation; it became a powerful symbol of change and progress in the fight for women’s emancipation. In fact, the introduction of the bicycle revolutionised women’s fashion, breaking away from restrictive corsets and long skirts that had previously hindered their mobility. Instead, women began to adopt more practical, comfortable clothing that allowed them to cycle freely. The image of the ‘new woman’ emerged — educated, sporty, and career-oriented — with a bicycle as her constant companion. In 1895, at the age of 80, suffragist leader <keyword id="23037502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elizabeth-cady-stanton" source="keywords">Elizabeth Cady Stanton</keyword> predicted the power of the bicycle in transforming the lives of women. Having the ability to be self-reliant, often for the first time in their lives, would encourage them to be more courageous in other areas as well. While back then, their fight was for their right to vote in political elections, times have changed. Women have to fight different battles — some new and some old — to realise and utilise their potential. What has remained constant in this journey is the bicycle! Susan B. Anthony, another suffragist leader further opined, “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammelled womanhood.” Had she known that several decades later, this simpleton mode of transport would continue to improve the lives of young women in remote parts of the Global South, she would’ve been happy to her heart's content! If something as mundane as access to mobility has historically brought such great results, what can be done to bring greater mobility for women in policy-making today? Professor Nishith Prakash suggests that mobility needs to be thought of in a broader context. Mobility in the case of women isn’t just freedom to be able to go from one place to another. There are multiple actors at play, including their actual safety and the perception of feeling safe in an environment. Cultural norms in most societies across the globe, and in India, automatically grant the power of key-decision making to men. For these archaic norms to be challenged, he suggests changes in curriculum from early childhood. Reiterating the importance of agency in making choices for themselves, there need to be jobs for them to want to step out of the confines of their homes. And once they do, nothing can stop them from cycling away to their freedoms!

Dhoni goes electric: Former team India captain invests in affordable e-bike start-up EMotorad

Economists at the country's largest lender, SBI, today said they see India's Q2 real GDP growth slowing down further to 6.5% in the September quarter of this fiscal year. Amid concerns over the country's economic growth rate and whether it is slowing down, the analysts said they expect FY25 growth to come "closer to" 7%. SBI analysts join a long line of agencies like Fitch, ADB, IMF, Moody, World Bank, S&amp;P, and even RBI in forecasting India's GDP growth for FY25 in the range of 6.8% to 7.2% for FY25, driven by robust consumption and investment. SIP inflows have been at an all-time high, and so has QIP (qualified institutional placement) fundraising. As many as 71 companies raised Rs 88,678 crore this year through QIPs. Activity in Indian primary markets also remained robust, with 78 mainboard IPOs in 2024; this is a 111% rise from just 38 listings in FY23. Between April and June 2024, India's real GDP grew by 6.7%, the lowest growth seen in 15 quarters, pushing experts to believe that India is caught in a cycle of slowdown. "There is some incipient pressure evident on the domestic economy. Based on our analysis of 50 meaningful leading indicators (both consumption and demand-centric), a dip looks plausible across select cohorts of agriculture, industry, and services in Q2," the <keyword id="22337294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI-economists" source="keywords">SBI economists</keyword> added. Stating that they track 50 indicators to gauge economic activity, SBIs note said the proportion of indicators showing acceleration declined to 69% in Q2 FY25, as against 80% in Q2 FY24 and 78% in Q1 FY25. However, things might be changing now, given that rural demand has started looking up amidst muted urban demand. SBI also explained that the ongoing regulatory tightening on unsecured lending and roadblocks that are hindering rollover/refinancing of debt through unsecured credit are dismantling the unwarranted exuberance that had built up post-pandemic, especially in the urban areas. Madhu Lunawat, CIO &amp; Fund Manager, Bharat Value Fund states that the overall investment environment remains strong due to favorable economic conditions supporting government policies &amp; reforms. "The sustainable inflow from domestic investors is going to support the Indian equity market in any kind of correction. The long-term bullish structure of Indian economy will continue to attract new domestic &amp; global investors to participate in India’s growth story through various Investment avenues.” <h2>Rate cuts not on cards</h2>RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das clarified today that changing the monetary policy stance to 'neutral' does not mean a rate cut is imminent in the central bank's next policy announcement. Notably, RBI MPC is set to meet between December 4 and 6, 2024, to decide if the prevailing repo rate of 6.5%, which has stayed unchanged for the last 2 years, should be brought down or not. In its last meeting, The <keyword id="20501100" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI-monetary-policy" source="keywords">RBI monetary policy</keyword> committee had shifted its stance to 'neutral' indicating that it is open to adjusting interest rates based on economic conditions. "It should not be assumed that we have done this, so therefore the next step is a rate cut. A change in stance doesn't mean that the next step is a rate cut in the very next meeting. It's not so," Das said. Das also cautioned that inflation remains a key factor, and inflation and CPI prints for October are expected to stay high.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 22 (ANI): The <keyword id="19901204" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board-of-india" source="keywords">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (<keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword>) has introduced the beta version of the T+0 rolling settlement cycle in equity cash markets, providing an optional basis for traders. According to SEBI, this move comes as a progressive step in the evolution of India's securities market infrastructure, leveraging advancements in technology and risk management capabilities. SEBI's circular on Thursday, communicated this decision to all recognized stock exchanges, clearing corporations, and depositories. The circular highlighted that the T+0 settlement cycle would be introduced on an optional basis alongside the existing T+1 settlement cycle. The introduction of the T+0 cycle follows the successful implementation of the T+1 settlement cycle phased in from January 27, 2023, as per circular dated September 07, 2021. This transition was made possible due to the enhanced technological capabilities and robust risk management frameworks of <keyword id="20919574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-infrastructure-institutions" source="keywords">Market Infrastructure Institutions</keyword> (MIIs), including stock exchanges, clearing corporations, and depositories. The decision to introduce the T+0 cycle was taken after careful consideration of recommendations from a Working Group comprising MIIs, public comments, and inputs from SEBI's Risk Management Review Committee. SEBI's Board approved the proposal, leading to the implementation of the beta version of the T+0 settlement cycle, under the operational guidelines outlined in the circular. The T+0 settlement cycle will initially cover a limited set of 25 scrips and involve a restricted number of brokers. All investors meeting the prescribed timelines, processes, and risk requirements are eligible to participate in the T+0 segment. Surveillance measures applicable in the T+1 settlement cycle will also apply to scrips in the T+0 cycle. Trading sessions will be continuous from 09:15 AM to 1:30 PM. Price movements in the T+0 segment will operate within a price band of +/- 100 basis points from the regular T+1 market, subject to recalibration. T+0 prices will not influence index calculations or settlement price computations. Netting of obligations between T+1 and T+0 settlement cycles will not be permitted. To facilitate a smooth transition, MIIs will publish operational guidelines and FAQs, along with the list of 25 scrips for the beta version of the T+0 settlement cycle, on their respective websites. They will also periodically update the list of participating brokers and provide fortnightly reports on the progress of activities in the T+0 cycle. The circular, effective from March 28, underscores SEBI's commitment to stakeholder consultation and ongoing efforts to promote investor interests and market development. MIIs are directed to take necessary steps, including system upgrades and regulatory amendments, to ensure compliance with the new framework. From shortening settlement cycles to T+3 in 2002, then to T+2 in 2003, and the subsequent introduction of T+1 settlement in 2021, SEBI has consistently strived to align India's securities markets with global standards. The decision to introduce the beta version of T+0 settlement stems from SEBI's recognition of the evolving technological landscape and the robustness of MIIs. With advancements in technology and infrastructure, the ecosystem is now capable of facilitating immediate transfers of securities and real-time fund settlements. All investors are eligible to participate in the T+0 settlement cycle, provided they meet the prescribed timelines, processes, and risk requirements. Scrutiny measures applicable in T+1 settlement remain applicable in T+0 settlement. A price band of +-100 basis points from the regular T+1 market price will be in effect, subject to recalibration after every 50 basis points movement. T+0 prices will not influence index calculation or settlement price computation. No netting of obligations between T+1 and T+0 settlement cycles. The beta version of T+0 settlement will initially cover a limited set of 25 scrips and a select number of brokers. MIIs will publish operational guidelines, FAQs, and the list of eligible scrips on their respective websites. Periodic updates on broker participation and settlement progress will be provided by MIIs. SEBI underscores its commitment to stakeholder engagement, pledging to continue consultations with market participants. The regulator will review the beta version's progress at three-month and six-month intervals, paving the way for informed decisions on future enhancements. SEBI's Chairman, Madhabi Puri Buch, has previously articulated the regulator's vision for instantaneous settlement mechanisms. SEBI introduces Beta version of optional T+0 settlement cycle; Revolutionizing equity cash markets

India's retail inflation is projected to surge to 6.15% in October, exceeding the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) tolerance threshold of 6%, according to a new report by Union Bank of India. The spike is attributed to persistent <keyword id="21013592" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-price-pressures" source="keywords">food price pressures</keyword> and the waning of favorable base effects from the previous year. Earlier this month, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das also echoed similar sentiments and noted that the inflation print for October 2024 could stay well above 5.5%. This is why, as Das highlighted, cutting interest rates as early as December would be very early and premature The <keyword id="19999655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumer-Price-Index" source="keywords">Consumer Price Index</keyword> (CPI) data for October, which will be released at 4 pm on Tuesday, as opposed to the previous practice of releasing this data at 5:30 pm on the 12th of every month, follows September's inflation reading of 5.49%, up from 3.65% in August 2024. The last time inflation breached the RBI's upper limit was in August 2023. Despite the RBI's anticipation of an October inflation "hump," the Union Bank report suggests that the magnitude of the increase might raise concerns, particularly as November's figures are also tracking at elevated levels. The bank maintains its forecast of unchanged interest rates in December's monetary policy meeting, with a modest 50 basis points rate cut cycle predicted to begin in February 2025. Food inflation remains a key driver of price pressures, with vegetables and edible oils leading the recent surge. In September 2024, India's YoY food inflation rate hit 9.24%, up from 5.66% in the month prior. However, the report projects some easing of food inflation in the January-March quarter, citing typical winter price moderation and improving prospects for rabi crops. Despite this, potential risks from food supply disruptions, imported edible oil prices, and the impact of potential trade tariff hikes will exist. The RBI, which aims to maintain retail inflation at 4%, has held the repo rate steady at 6.5% for the tenth consecutive time in its last meeting as part of its inflation containment strategy. A recent SBI report also noted that expecting rate cuts in this quarter would be immature, and easing was possible only during the first half of 2025. "Given the current estimates of FY25 real GDP growth at 7.2% and CPI at 4.50%, the RBI would quite possibly keep policy rates stable over the coming quarter at least. Emerging trends in the growth outlook would possibly determine the timing and extent of any policy easing. With near-term CPI numbers likely to stay elevated, it’s premature to consider expectations of any easing in the December review. "However, high-frequency data do validate a softness in growth data on an incremental basis. The 23rd edition of the mega-event is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, marking Glasgow's return as host after 12 years, following the 2014 edition. "The sports programme will include Athletics and Para Athletics (Track &amp; Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, and 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball," the Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement. "The Games will take place across four venues – Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena – including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Athletes and support staff will be housed in hotel accommodation," it added. Most leading players guided their revenue to grow at a CAGR of 30-40% for the next few years – and that piqued the interest in this industry. “Stock prices of EMS companies have soared up to 75% in three months on strong management guidance. Thus, any major deviation from actual results could cause these scrips to de-rate significantly,” says a report by Systematix Institutional Equities. A few other brokerages however believe in the medium to long term potential of these stocks – given the opportunities ahead. “A significant tailwind on the back of uptick seen in overall manufacturing backed by strong order backlog and high enquiry levels along with thrust on increased localization augurs well for the EMS space as India steps up to develop its domestic manufacturing ecosystem,” says a report by Haitong. Nuvama judges the long term potential of the stocks by comparing it to upcycle seen in specialty chemicals. About 15 Indian specialty chemicals companies had benefited from China plus One, between FY14–23 – when their revenues tripled, EBITDA quadrupled and net profit surged seven times. “The key aspect for EMS stocks is that they are at very early stages in a long, high-growth cycle. Hence, even if one assumes that valuations have discounted the story, earnings compounding over the next five–seven years still have potential to deliver extremely healthy stock returns in our view,” says Nuvama. To take advantage of the growth cycle, companies in the sector would need to make capital investments to build scale, competitive advantages with capability upgrades. “We would focus on Return on Capital Employed (RoCE) rather than margins to judge an EMS business; Dixon, Kaynes and Avalon rank high in this context,” says Systematix. Syrma and Kaynes both have the ability to self-fund their EMS growth paths entirely, says Nuvama. Yet the sector is not without its downside risks — apart from a general economic slowdown within and outside the country that can dampen demand, lack of business commitments from clients and inability to sustain advancements in technology and emerging trends – can veer off these companies from their high growth path.

However, contributions from the private corporate sector and households have lagged. It also draws attention to a slowdown in India's per capita consumption, approaching lows seen in previous cycles. flows into mutual funds. In September, inflows into SIPs hit an all-time high of ₹16,042.06 crore, according to Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). It also said that the cumulative Assets Under Management (AUM) for the mutual fund industry stood at ₹46.58 lakh crore as of September end. Apart from pushing investors to bring discipline into their investments, SIPs also automates investing providing convenience with stress-free investing. “Increasing your SIP contributions in line with the rise in your earnings can magically grow your wealth. You can do this annually by increasing your SIP amount,” says a note by Value Research. Golden Oldies: The mutual fund schemes that have stood the test of market cycles over 20 years

<ul><li>Market watchers have been hoping that India might head to a <keyword id="1067776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capex-cycle" source="Orion">capex cycle</keyword> as seen in 2003-08.</li><li>While there are similarities, the global demand scenario is different, say economists.</li><li>In terms of announcements, most of them relate to airlines where the benefits flow to the manufacturers outside India. </li></ul>The Indian markets are hitting new highs every day and the government is hopeful that this will translate to a higher capital expenditure (capex) cycle starting soon. However, even as hopes build for a repeat of 2003-08, the early indicators are mixed, as per economists. “There have been affirmative statements made by several companies on investment in FY24 which is positive as it is premised on a recovery in consumption demand. The picture for the first quarter of the year is, however, quite expectedly mixed. Therefore the announcements are definitely not broad-based and are restricted to a handful of sectors,” say economists at Bank of Baroda. What’s common with 2003-08? Most experts say that levers are in place for a repeat for the 2003-2208 high capex phase, which was led by private investment. Tailwinds for a capex recovery are similar — like higher utilisation levels which are also expected to pick up in demand. Strong bank and corporate balance sheets, an infrastructure push by the Indian government in the form of highways, railways, rural infra, Jal Jeevan Mission and defence spending should augur well for this. Moreover, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) is also another added positive for domestic manufacturing, in addition to the push for energy transition. The amplified need for data centres and China+1 strategy are providing a fertile ground for revival of the capex cycle, says India Strategy report by Prabhudas Liladher. “This is likely to be the first industrial led capex cycle after the 2003-08 cycle was led by power and infra,” says the Prabhudas Lilladher report. A Kotak Institutional Equities report agrees that the levers are in place but remains cautious, it believes that the space for a sustained pace of <keyword id="4875151" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-capex" source="Orion">government capex</keyword> is limited. “Private capex cycle would require visibility of long-term high demand growth (including global growth), which is still missing. For now, even as the long-term growth fundamentals remain strong, we remain cautious in calling out for a broad-based sustained capex cycle,” Kotak says. Without a global impetus and visibility of medium to long-term demand, the capex cycle over the next 5-7 years may be much narrower and slower than 2003-08, the report adds. Airlines invest, but where? As much as ₹5.96 lakh crore worth of investments have been announced for Q1FY24 – of which 74% share comes from the airlines sector. “Investments in this industry are unique in so far as it involves purchase of aeroplanes which are imported. Hence while it does add to the capital stock of the country it would not be generating backward linkages with other sectors and hence other related industries may not benefit much from such purchases. The boost is more for the global manufacturers of these aircrafts,” says Bank of Baroda. The share of power sector is 10%, and is from the conventional space. The chemicals sector has a share of 8% followed by machinery with 3% and the auto sector with 2%. ‘Optimism in the long-term’ Data from the funds raised in the corporate bond market also provides a clue into the mood of private investments. As per BoB data, the total amount of funds raised was impressive at ₹2.33 lakh crore as against ₹0.97 lakh crore in the last year. Here too, 89% of the funds mobilised was from the financial sector of which asset financing companies accounted for 72% – indicating limited fund raising by non-finance companies. “Therefore, the investment story looks blurred when looked at from the point of view of the debt market. There could be reasons to be optimistic of the future. However, in the short to medium term the heavy lifting has to be done by the government on investment,” say BoB economists.
