The Indian cement industry is on track to reach 5.09 billion tonnes by 2028-29, driven by robust government investment in infrastructure. According to an IANS report originally attributed to Infomerics Ratings, this marks a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9 per cent between 2024 and 2029. In 2022-23, the industry’s market size stood at 3.82 billion tonnes, with a total installed capacity of 622 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in FY24 and production at 427 million tonnes. Notably, India contributes over 8 per cent to the world’s total installed cement capacity, highlighting its importance in the global market. Despite this, India’s per capita cement consumption is 260 kg—significantly below the global average of 540 kg—indicating substantial room for growth. Globally, the cement market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3 per cent from 2024 to 2032. The sector’s expansion is fuelled by ambitious government initiatives, including an allocation of ₹11.11 lakh crore for infrastructure in FY25 and housing schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The construction sector consumes 55 per cent of cement production, while public infrastructure projects account for the remainder. The industry also plays a critical role in employment, providing direct jobs to over one million people and creating downstream opportunities for about 20,000 individuals per million tonnes of cement produced. Private players dominate the sector, controlling 98 per cent of production capacity, while public sector units hold a mere 2 per cent. Domestic production meets almost all demand, with imports accounting for just 0.2 per cent of total production in FY23. However, exports have declined recently due to reduced global demand and rising competition. India currently has 341 cement manufacturing facilities, including 159 integrated large cement plants, 120 grinding units, and 62 mini cement plants. Cement production has seen steady growth, with a 7.1 per cent increase in September 2024 and a cumulative growth of 1.6 per cent between April and September of FY25, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This growth aligns with India’s overall industrial performance, which saw a 2 per cent rise in core industries in September, led by cement, steel, coal, and fertilisers. <keyword id="19896016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-delhi" source="keywords">New Delhi</keyword>, The growth of eight key infrastructure sectors slowed to a 15-month low of 3.6 per cent in January, on account of poor performance of sectors like <keyword id="819180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="refinery-products" source="Orion">refinery products</keyword>, <keyword id="50549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fertiliser" source="Orion">fertiliser</keyword>, <keyword id="34570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel" source="Orion">steel</keyword> and <keyword id="44578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electricity" source="Orion">electricity</keyword>, according to the official data released on Thursday. The growth of eight core sectors -- coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity -- was 4.9 per cent in December. It was 9.7 per cent in January 2023. The previous low level of growth rate was recorded at 0.9 per cent in October 2022. Cumulatively also, the growth rate in the output of these sectors slowed down to 7.7 per cent as against 8.3 per cent in April-January 2022-23. The output growth of refinery products and fertiliser was in the negative zone. And the pace of increase in the output of coal, steel, and electricity decelerated during the month under review. However, crude oil, natural gas, and cement production recorded positive growth in January. The eight core sectors contribute 40.27 per cent to the country's Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

Key infra sectors' growth slows to 15-month low of 3.6% in January

India's merchandise <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> slipped by 2.83 per cent to USD 33.90 billion in November while the <keyword id="113688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="Orion">trade deficit</keyword> narrowed to USD 20.58 billion, according to government data. <keyword id="35091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports" source="Orion">Imports</keyword> also fell by 4.33 per cent to USD 54.48 billion in November, the data released by the commerce ministry on Friday showed. Cumulatively, the country's merchandise exports in April-November FY2023-24 contracted by 6.51 per cent to USD 278.8 billion. Imports were also down by 8.67 per cent to USD 445.15 billion in the eight-month period due to a fall in <keyword id="522549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-imports" source="Orion">oil imports</keyword>. Oil imports dipped to USD 113.65 billion as against USD 139.29 billion in April-November 2022-23. The trade deficit - difference between imports and exports - during the eight-month period was USD 166.35 billion against USD 189.21 billion in the corresponding period last year. Briefing reporters here, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that given the global situation, India's export numbers are good. All key export sectors have recorded negative growth during the April-November period of this fiscal and that include petroleum products, <keyword id="44517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gems" source="Orion">gems</keyword> and jewellery, chemicals, garments, and engineering goods. Sectors which registered positive growth include electronics, iron ore, and pharma. The other import segments whose inbound shipments are contracted include coal, coke; pearls, precious and semi-precious stones; and fertiliser. However, gold imports increased by 21 per cent to USD 32.93 billion. Electronic goods' imports have risen to USD 57.83 billion during April-November 2023-24 against USD 51.89 billion in the same period last year. The gold imports in November rose by 6.24 per cent to USD 3.44 billion. Oil imports during the month, however, dipped by 8.47 per cent to USD 14.93 billion. Barthwal said the global trade is suffering but, "we are holding the fort". He added that GDP growth of many countries are "not so high", interest rate regime is not softening, global conflicts are aggravating, irrespective of these issues, "we are doing well". Exports in October had grew by 6.21 per cent. According to the data, the estimated value of services export for November is USD 28.69 billion, as compared to USD 26.93 billion in November 2022. During the eight-month period, these exports stood at USD 220.66 billion as compared to USD 208.30 billion in April-November 2022. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has forecast that global trade will grow only by 0.8 per cent in 2023. According to UNCTAD report, global trade expected to shrink by nearly 5 per cent in 2023 amid geopolitical strains and shifting trade patterns.

India crosses the 2 billion mark in its journey to become a smartphone manufacturing powerhouse

Encouraged by volume growth, margin improvement and recovery in rural sales, India's top fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are now back to their normal growth cycle as they step up investments as well as spending on advertising and marketing. <keyword id="84065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-companies" source="Orion">FMCG companies</keyword> are chasing volume growth again after a gap of a few quarters, offering higher grammage and price cuts thanks to inflationary pressures softening on key raw materials for everything from soaps to food items. Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Dabur, Marico, Godrej Consumer Products, ITC, Tata Consumer Products and Nestle reported volume recovery in the March quarter and said they expect a gradual pickup in consumption in FY24. "The prospects of a sustained recovery have strengthened. After five quarters of volume decline, the sector has posted volume growth," Marico MD and CEO Saugata Gupta said in the company's earnings conference call. "Urban consumption has been steady while rural is showing some convincing signs of having bottomed out." Foods continue to drive growth for the sector, while the home and personal care segment also entered positive territory after an extended slowdown. Marico, which owns popular brands like Saffola, Parachute and Livon, reported an 18.7 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit to Rs 305 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2023 while sales rose 3.65 per cent to Rs 2,240 crore, driven by single-digit volume growth and moderation in commodity prices. HUL said rural areas have shown improvement with higher value growth sequentially. While HUL's volumes continue to fall, the extent of decline has reduced versus last quarter. "The slowdown in the FMCG market is bottoming out. This improvement was led by volumes, which have turned flat in this quarter, versus a mid-single-digit decline in the December quarter," said HUL CFO Ritesh Tiwari in its earnings call. The makers of popular brands such as Rin, Lux, Surf Excel and Pond's said it expects the price-volume growth to rebalance further. "We expect volumes to recover gradually due to high levels of cumulative inflation and the fact that consumption habits typically recover with a lag," he said. For the March quarter, HUL reported an increase of 12.74 per cent in its consolidated net profit to Rs 2,601 crore. Net sales rose 10.83 per cent to Rs 14,926 crore. However, HUL warned the near-term operating environment is likely to remain volatile due to global slowdown risk and uncertainty related to weather phenomena like El Nino and heatwaves. Abneesh Roy, Nuvama Group Executive Director for Institutional Equities, said the outlook for the <keyword id="495979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-industry" source="Orion">FMCG industry</keyword> was "positive" with volume growth and improvement in margins for most companies in FY24. "As raw material prices are cooling off, companies shall start paring prices via grammage increase or gradual price reductions. Price growth shall ease while volume growth will improve," he said. Roy also cautioned about the impact of El Nino and the "aggression" from billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd, a known disrupter, which aims to be a big player in the USD 110-billion FMCG segment. Meanwhile, Godrej Consumer reported an 11.47 per cent increase in its India revenue to Rs 1,822.92 crore in the March quarter. This was led by volume growth of 11 per cent. Its home care segment, which consists of household insecticides and air fresheners, grew 14 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively. "We expect to build on the current momentum and deliver volume-led growth along with upfront marketing investments and improvement in profitability," said its Managing Director and CEO Sudhir Sitapati. Britannia Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Varun Berry also expressed optimism. "Volume growth will be certainly much better than this year," he said. On commodity prices, Berry said there is deflation in prices of palm oil, laminates and corrugated material for packing but flour and milk prices are soaring. "There are certain brands and certain packs where we have already initiated price reductions or promotions," he said. In the March quarter, Britannia reported a 47.53 per cent jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 557.60 crore. Its revenue from operations rose 10.93 per cent to Rs 3,892.02. Similarly, Dabur reported volume growth of 11 per cent during the March quarter and 14 per cent for FY23. Its quarterly net profit was Rs 292.76 crore and revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,677.8 crore. "Despite near-term concerns around inflationary pressures, we plan to accelerate the growth momentum by continuing to invest in brand building, innovation, and capabilities that will drive growth," said Dabur India CEO Mohit Malhotra. Other companies also recorded growth. ITC's revenue from the FMCG segment rose 19.34 per cent to Rs 4,951.17 crore from Rs 4,148.62 crore while EBITDA jumped 76 per cent. Nestle, the maker of Maggi, Kitkat and Nescafe, reported an increase of 24.69 per cent in its net profit to Rs 736.64 crore in the March quarter. Sales rose 20.43 per cent to Rs 4,808.40 crore. Tata Consumer reported a 21.12 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs 289.56 crore. Its revenue from operations was up 13.96 per cent at Rs 3,618.73 crore. Tata Consumer said it recorded growth in the India beverages business and food. It had a "strong margin growth and strong topline growth driven both by volume and price," the company said in its earnings call. "We have started seeing volume growth coming back. The impact of inflation and monetary tightening on economic growth and demand seems to be slowing down, but I would keep my fingers crossed and monitor it closely," said Tata Consumer MD and CEO Sunil D'Souza. FMCG makers expect sustained recovery in volume and margins with price reduction in FY24

New Delhi, India's total <keyword id="6383145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-production" source="Orion">coal production</keyword> rose 8.40 per cent to 222.93 million tonne (MT) in April-June 2023-24, an official statement said on Monday. The country's overall coal output was 205.65 MT in the year-ago quarter, the Ministry of Coal said. Captive mines /others registered a growth of 4.74 per cent to 30.48 MT in Q1 FY24, from 29.10 MT in Q1 FY23. The cumulative coal dispatch grew 6.97 per cent to 239.69 MT in Q1 this fiscal compared to 224.08 MT in Q1 of FY23. The total coal stock, as of June 30, 2023, surged 37.62 per cent to 107.15 MT (provisional) from 77.86 MT a year ago. "This growth indicates the continued efforts to meet the rising demand for coal," the ministry said. State-owned <keyword id="45383" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-India" source="Orion">Coal India</keyword> Limited (CIL) has recorded 9.85 per cent growth, with production reaching 175.35 MT in Q1 FY24 compared to 159.63 MT a year ago. India will not face any coal shortage this year, even during the monsoon, Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi said last month.

India's coal output grows 8.40% to 222.93 MT in April-June 2023

India's eight core industries recorded a growth of 7.4 per cent in December (2022) against 4.1 per cent recorded in the same month last year, according to official data released by the <keyword id="527366" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Commerce-Industry" source="Orion">Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry</keyword> on Tuesday. The number stood at 5.4 per cent in November, 2022. "The production of coal, electricity, steel, cement, fertilizers, refinery products and natural gas increased in December 2022 over the corresponding month of last year," stated the release. The <keyword id="16313496" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-of-crude-oil-declined" source="Orion">production of crude oil declined</keyword> by 1.2 per cent in December, 2022. The cumulative growth rate of ICI during April-December 2022 was 8.0 per cent (provisional) as compared to the corresponding period of last year. The Index of Core Industries measures combined and individual performance of production in selected eight core industries viz. coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement and electricity. India's core sector output rises by 7.4 per cent in December

Leasing of industrial and warehousing space was highest in Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas during 2022 at 7.3 million square feet driven mainly by demand from third-party logistics and e-commerce firms, according to <keyword id="6376943" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cbre" source="Orion">CBRE</keyword>. The leasing grew by 6 per cent in Delhi-NCR to 7.3 million square feet in 2022 from 6.9 million square feet in the previous year. In its latest report, CBRE said that the leasing of industrial and logistics space across eight major cities rose 8 per cent to 31.6 million square feet in 2022 from 29.4 million square feet in the previous year. Commenting on the report, <keyword id="330930" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anshuman-magazine" source="Orion">Anshuman Magazine</keyword>, Chairman &amp; CEO - India, South-East Asia, Middle East &amp; Africa, CBRE, said, "The intent to strengthen supply chain among global and domestic companies drove the leasing activity in 2022." The leasing activity in 2023 is expected to remain range-bound, driven by sustained demand from 3PL (third party logistics), engineering &amp; manufacturing and retail firms, he added. "On the supply front, we foresee project completions to exceed the 2022 levels and be in line with space take-up during 2023," Magazine said. As per the data, in Mumbai, the leasing grew 36 per cent to 6.1 million square feet in 2022 from 4.5 million square feet in the previous year. The leasing of industrial and logistic space in Bengaluru fell 18 per cent to 5.2 million square feet from 6.4 million square feet. Chennai saw a marginal decline in leasing to 4 million square feet. In Hyderabad, the leasing rose 16 per cent to 3.7 million square feet from 3.2 million square feet. The leasing activities in Pune fell 64 per cent to 0.6 million square feet from 1.8 million square feet. In Kolkata, the leasing jumped to 3.8 million square feet from 1.9 million square feet. Leasing of industrial and logistics space was up 33 per cent in Ahmedabad during 2022 to 0.8 million square feet from 0.6 million square feet in the previous year. The consultant said that the overall leasing across eight cities grew despite global headwinds, and a slowdown in e-commerce demand and dissipation of the post-pandemic need to hold additional inventories. This is the second-highest leasing activity recorded in industrial and logistics after the 2019 peak of 32 million square feet. The total supply in 2022 touched 20.9 million square feet. The 3PL players accounted for about half of the annual space take-up, driven by heightened demand from interlinked stakeholders across the supply chain (wholesalers, retailers, &amp; e-commerce players) for the need to shore up distribution capabilities. Over the last five years, 3PL players have cumulatively leased more than 60 million square feet across India. A majority of this space take-up was led by domestic occupiers. Engineering &amp; manufacturing firms picked up pace in 2022 with a share of about 16 per cent in total leasing compared to 10 per cent in 2021. "For local engineering and industrial players, government policy enablers like the <keyword id="8870884" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="production-linked-incentive" source="Orion">Production Linked Incentive</keyword> (PLI) programme worked as a growth stimulant," the consultant said. After a minute, a serene, alto female voice whispers: "Now you're reset."This is Arianna Huffington's latest plan for fighting <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-less-answer-to-america-burnout-problem-author-2022-1">burnout:</a> 60- to 90-second "micro interventions" in the form of breathing exercises, prompts to stretch, or inspirational quotes, which aim to break up the cycle of stress that slowly builds throughout the workday. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arianna-huffington-entry-interviews-tackle-great-resignation-careers-work-2021-12">Huffington is famous</a> for founding the media company Huffington Post and her <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-loses-two-board-members-ariana-huffington-and-matt-cohler-2019-7">high-profile board positions at companies such as Uber</a>.She's been vocal about the problem of <keyword id="11937119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="burnout" source="Orion">burnout</keyword> after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arianna-huffington-book-use-microsteps-change-unhealthy-habits-prevent-burnout-2021-3">collapsing and breaking her cheekbone on her office desk in 2007, </a>which she said was caused by overwork. In 2016, she founded the <keyword id="11964289" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wellbeing" source="Orion">wellbeing</keyword> consultancy Thrive Global.Her new tool, Thrive Reset, was developed in conjunction with the cloud software company Genesys and is aimed at call center workers. "While stress is unavoidable in any job. Cumulative stress is avoidable by embedding within the workflow 60- to 90-second breaks," Huffington told Insider. She said the tech is based around the research of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/steps-to-troubleshoot-bad-behavior-design-stanford">Stanford social scientist BJ Fogg</a>, who wrote the book "Tiny Habits: The Small Changes that Change Everything."Employers can decide what "trigger" causes the software to kick in. This could be a long call, an instance where a call has to be elevated to a manager, or taking a string of calls without a break. It then appears on the employee's screen or in their earpiece. Huffington shared her own <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j26QP3ehxBw">reset</a> as an example. It features images of her children and dog, as well as inspirational quotes from the Buddhist monk Pema Chodron. But she said there are multiple "resets" that people can choose. When interventions are embedded in a person's workflow, it makes them much easier to follow, Huffington told Insider. It's also designed to be proactive. "A lot of interventions happen after the fact. Our intention is to be proactive, and prevent burnout, rather than deal with it after it has happened," Huffington said. She added that the product has been tested in a Fortune 10 company and led to lower levels of stress and reduced turnover. When I had a go, I found it slightly awkward but I did try it outside of a call center at a time when I wasn't feeling particularly stressed.<h2>Wellbeing tools can be problematic </h2>Over the last few years, the market has become saturated with products and founders proclaiming to end burnout and help people shut off. The pandemic, combined with the Great Resignation, has seemingly accelerated that trend as companies become more aware of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-us-workforce-is-feeling-more-burned-out-than-ever-2021-6">impact of lockdown and negative news cycles on workers' mental wellbeing</a>. But there are concerns that flashy tech can act as a distraction. Other studies even suggest that <keyword id="12179586" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mindfulness" source="Orion">mindfulness</keyword> can sometimes have a negative impact, which can cause people to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20220302-how-mindfulness-can-make-you-a-darker-person">suppress feelings of guilt and impact their personal relationships</a>. "Tactical wellbeing" can be useful for helping someone cope with stress and burnout, for example by making them think about breaks. But are not a solution on their own, Cary Cooper, professor of organizational psychology at Alliance Manchester Business School, told Insider."Organizations tend to look for simple solutions to complex problems," Cooper said. Many focus on "low-hanging fruit" like mindfulness days, beanbags, and free sushi as a solution, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citigroup-burnout-perks-not-enough-to-address-problem-2021-3">rather than looking at the intrinsic problems </a>that lead to burnout in the first place. Those perks are "nice to have but not a must-have," according to Cooper. Problems won't go away unless they focus on the core causes of burnout and stress, he said. This can stem from micromanaging bosses, unmanageable workloads, and other organizational issues. Huffington agrees. It's not an either/or situation, she said. Her tool is a nudge to workers, designed to complement other initiatives. "If you can interrupt the burnout cycle, it has a huge impact in employees not feeling propelled to leave their jobs," she added.
