No joke. I don't know how many others <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-who-left-us-because-of-trump-talk-biden-presidency-2020-12">followed through on that declaration</a>, but I did. Trump won the election, and 9 months later, I left the US. Full disclosure: Trump becoming president was not the only reason I left — it was also about being fed up with my corporate job, coupled with a strong desire to explore the world. I was 37, single, with no children or pets, so I was free to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-mom-quit-job-expat-move-abroad-qatar-singapore-2023-12">quit my job</a>, uproot myself, and take off. I did own a house at the time, which I sold a few months after I left. Upon my departure, I didn't have much of a plan other than the intention to spend some time slowly exploring Asia and teaching English when I needed to make money. This no-plan thing was out of character for me, but I was very comfortable with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southeast-asia-travel-mistakes-packing-weather-clothing-traditions-medicine-2024-4">solo international travel</a>, thanks to previous study abroad experiences and 14 years of intensive overseas work-related travel. <div type="image" title="Sonya Moore in Siem Reap, Cambodia" height="1280" width="1600" msid="115071450" hostid="261"></div><h2>The move opened a new chapter in my life</h2>As months unfolded, I discovered that when you leave space for it, life guides you to the places, people, and opportunities that are meant for you. Seven years later, I'm still living <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-couldnt-afford-retirement-in-california-moved-abroad-travel-happy-2024-10">happily outside the US</a>. While my decision to leave opened up a horizon of experiences beyond my wildest dreams and led me to the man of my dreams, it hasn't all been a bed of roses. The first year, I lived off savings while traveling slowly through Asia. I started my travels in India, where I spent 10 days at a silent meditation retreat, attended teachings by the Dalai Lama, and took a <keyword id="20626363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yoga-teacher-training" source="keywords">yoga teacher training</keyword>. I promptly got hooked on teaching yoga. I swam in the crystal clear waters of the Maldives, visited healers in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-family-kids-bali-decompress-relocate-slow-life-work-remote-2024-10">Bali</a>, witnessed breathtaking sunrise views from mountaintops in Laos, went island-hopped through the Philippines, rode motorbikes around Thailand's islands, and discovered ancient pagodas in Myanmar The cost of living in much of Asia is so low that savings can stretch a long way. I have high standards for my accommodations, and while traveling, I usually spent around $20 to $25 per night on hotels. Lower-maintenance friends of mine found simpler places for $6 per night in India. Meals usually cost around $3. After six weeks in India, I considered a lunch bill of $5 to be expensive. <h2>There have been times along the way when I've felt lost </h2>From time to time, I experienced stretches of feeling <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/relocation-moved-to-milan-living-abroad-emotionally-exhausting-unspoken-truths-2023-9">unsettled and lacking a sense of purpose</a>. Over the years, I learned that those periods of doubt and uncertainty will continue to surface. But I also learned to just keep trusting, and the way forward would eventually reveal itself. People often ask me if I was ever afraid while <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-women-need-to-know-traveling-solo-southeast-asia-tips-2022-12">traveling alone through Asia</a>. I never was — except a couple of times in India when riding on some precariously high Himalayan roads with no guardrails. But of people? I never had a reason to be. After a year away, I found an opportunity to teach yoga in a small mountain town in Myanmar. Life there was quiet, simple, and beautiful. I lived there for 9 months, and I was profoundly happy most of the time. But there were times <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loneliness-how-to-make-friends-remote-worker-freelancer-new-city-2024-2">I felt lonely</a>. The locals were sweet and kind, with love in their eyes and actions, but I missed friends who spoke my language fluently, with whom I could have deep conversations over a glass of wine. And the dating scene? Siem Reap is not a big city, but after my small-town Myanmar life, it felt like Manhattan. There were so many restaurants, bars, social events, friends, and even some attractive single men. I fell in love with the town, the quality of life, and the locals. It was easy to get a tourist or work visa to live here long term, and it was almost as inexpensive as India and Myanmar. I was living in Siem Reap when COVID-19 hit. By that time, I was in a <keyword id="20752574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-distance-relationship" source="keywords">long-distance relationship</keyword> with a French man I met during my travels. After the closed borders of the pandemic kept us apart for 7 months, I moved to France to be with him. Our story was long and winding, but it felt like destiny. He <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-partner-couple-travel-together-full-time-one-date-2024-5">loves global travel</a> like I do. We've been together for four years and are living together in Papua New Guinea. Our plan is to go back to a nomadic slow-travel lifestyle. I swore I would leave the US if Trump won the 2016 election. Here's how that worked out for me.

Anyone following the rhetoric around <keyword id="107950" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Artificial-Intelligence" source="Orion">artificial intelligence</keyword> in recent years has heard one version or another of the cl<keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="Orion">ai</keyword>m that AI is inevitable. Common themes are that AI is already here and indispensable, and people who are bearish on it harm themselves. In the business world, AI advocates tell companies and workers that they will fall behind if they fail to integrate generative AI into their operations. In the sciences, AI advocates promise that AI will aid in curing hitherto intractable diseases. In higher education, AI promoters admonish teachers that students must learn how to use AI or risk becoming uncompetitive when it comes time to find a job. In national security, AI's champions say that either the nation invests heavily in AI weaponry, or it will be at a disadvantage against the Chinese and Russians, who are already doing so. The argument across these different domains is essentially the same: The time for AI skepticism has come and gone. The <keyword id="6355118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="technology" source="Orion">technology</keyword> will shape the future, whether you like it or not. You have the choice to learn how to use it or be left out of that future. Anyone trying to stand in the technology's way is as hopeless as the manual weavers who resisted the mechanical looms in the early 19th century. In the past few years, my colleagues and I (Nir Eisikovits, Professor of Philosophy and Director, Applied Ethics Center, UMass Boston) have been studying the ethical questions raised by the widespread adoption of AI, and I believe the inevitability argument is misleading. <h2>History and hindsight</h2> This claim is the most recent version of a deterministic view of technological development. It's the belief that innovations are unstoppable once people start working on them. In other words, some genies don't go back in their bottles. The best you can do is harness them for your good purposes. This deterministic approach to tech has a long history. It's been applied to the influence of the printing press as well as to the rise of automobiles and the infrastructure they require, among other developments. But I believe that when it comes to AI, the technological determinism argument is both exaggerated and oversimplified. <h2>AI in the field(s)</h2> Consider the contention that businesses can't afford to stay out of the AI game. The case has yet to be made that AI is delivering significant productivity gains to the firms that use it. A report in The <keyword id="20856675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economist" source="keywords">Economist</keyword> in July 2024 suggests that so far, the technology has had almost no economic impact. AI's role in higher education is also still very much an open question. Though universities have, in the past two years, invested heavily in AI-related initiatives, evidence suggests they may have jumped the gun. The technology can serve as an interesting pedagogical tool. For example, creating a Plato chatbot that lets students have a text conversation with a bot posing as Plato is a cool gimmick. However, AI is already starting to displace some of the best tools teachers have for assessment and for developing critical thinking, such as writing assignments. The college essay is going the way of the dinosaurs as more teachers give up on the ability to tell whether their students are writing their papers themselves. What's the cost-benefit argument for giving up on writing, an important and useful traditional skill? In the sciences and medicine, the use of AI seems promising. Its role in understanding the structure of proteins, for example, will likely be significant for curing diseases. The technology is also transforming medical imaging and has been helpful in accelerating the drug discovery process. But the excitement can become exaggerated. AI-based predictions about which cases of COVID-19 would become severe have roundly failed, and doctors rely excessively on the technology's diagnostic ability, often against their own better clinical judgment. And so, even in this area, where the potential is great, AI's ultimate impact is unclear. In national security, the argument for investing in AI development is compelling. Since the stakes can be high, the argument that if the Chinese and the Russians are developing AI-driven autonomous weapons, the United States can't afford to fall behind has real purchase. But a complete surrender to this form of reasoning, though tempting, is likely to lead the <keyword id="19899807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="u-s-" source="keywords">U.S.</keyword> to overlook the disproportionate impact of these systems on nations that are too poor to participate in the AI arms race. The major powers could deploy the technology in conflicts in these nations. And, just as significantly, this argument de-emphasizes the possibility of collaborating with adversaries on limiting military AI systems, favoring arms race over arms control.<h2> One step at a time</h2> Surveying the potential significance and risks of AI in these different domains merits some skepticism about the technology. I believe that AI should be adopted piecemeal and with a nuanced approach rather than subject to sweeping claims of inevitability. In developing this careful take, there are two things to keep in mind: -First, companies and entrepreneurs working on artificial intelligence have an obvious interest in the technology being perceived as inevitable and necessary, since they make a living from its adoption. It's important to pay attention to who is making claims of inevitability, and why. -Second, it's worth taking a lesson from recent history. Over the past 15 years, smartphones and the social media apps that run on them have come to be seen as a fact of life - a technology as transformative as it is inevitable. Then data started emerging about the <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> harms they cause teens, especially young girls. School districts across the United States started to ban phones to protect the attention spans and mental health of their students. And some people have reverted to using flip phones as a quality of life change to avoid smartphones. After a long experiment with the mental health of kids, facilitated by claims of technological determinism, Americans changed course. What seemed fixed turned out to be alterable. There is still time to avoid repeating the same mistake with artificial intelligence, which potentially could have larger consequences for society.

Trump is also seen as bullish for crypto, and his protectionist policies are viewed as likely to push the dollar higher.<h3 id="f5661b95-8cae-4195-968e-937088b5c035">Harris</h3>The current vice president's plan to raise the corporate tax rate is expected to hit the beneficiaries of Trump's proposed cut hardest. Her plan to regulate the financial sector is also seen as holding back stocks in the industry. On the positive side, Harris' policies would likely benefit homebuilder and renewable-energy stocks.Harris' plans are also considered to be less inflationary than Trump's, which would allow the Federal Reserve to keep cutting rates, boosting bond prices. Her continuity with President Joe Biden's policies is expected to push the dollar lower. Major categories with high potential tariff exposure include automobiles, drugs for human and veterinary use, food and beverage, furniture, and household appliances.Relatedly, the former president has previously said he'll lower grocery prices by restricting food imports to bolster domestic producers.<h3 id="c9f25ce7-8011-4641-a4cf-cdefe1de92d9">Harris</h3>While Harris could continue tariffs instated by Biden, her import-tax policy is seen as less inflationary than Trump's. For groceries, the vice president released a plan to tackle high food costs by implementing a federal ban on price gouging during national emergencies.For drug prices, Harris has promised to expand two provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, allowing Medicare to negotiate the prices of some drugs.<h2 id="ed67f4da-e516-414c-ba19-f692892a0f86"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/market-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-stocks-bonds-crypto-2024-10">Housing</a></h2><h3 id="c3f2844c-6bb9-473d-91db-9163697e0f29">Trump</h3>Trump has said on the campaign trail that the ongoing housing shortage could be addressed by deporting millions of people from the country. The former president also said he could decrease demand by banning mortgages for immigrants living in the US illegally.Further — during his previous White House tenure — Trump opposed the construction of high-density housing in single-family-zoned areas, although he has not said during this election cycle whether he wants to continue pursuing similar policies.<h3 id="dd9ed82e-f056-4bf1-a84a-ce1071f56fc5">Harris</h3>Harris' planned policy includes the construction of 3 million new housing units, as well as an expansion to the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. She also plans to create a $40 billion federal innovation fund that would encourage local governments to build housing.The vice president has also said she would take action against "corporate landlords" and call on Congress to remove tax benefits from investors who acquire 50 or more single-family rental homes.<h2 id="b0d6cc09-dd6b-4d2e-9216-5c8ecbcfa7e0"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-cut-tariff-plan-outlook-presidential-election-scenarios-harris-trump-2024-10">Taxes</a></h2><h3 id="206237a6-9eca-4208-bb25-b7f76c2ce845">Trump</h3>Trump has proposed lowering the corporate tax rate from 21% to 15% for firms that make their products in the US.The former president has also said he plans to extend his slew of tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — also known as the "Trump tax cut."A permanent continuation of the TCJA's income-tax provisions would amount to a nearly $280,000 tax cut for the top 0.1% of earners, compared to $1,000 for middle-income Americas, a Tax Policy Center analysis found. Trump's plan for universal tariffs is seen as offsetting a positive tax impact and would be especially costly for lower-earning Americans.<h3 id="77d8ca5f-0db1-4a2a-87e9-9b8e7ae5c85b">Harris</h3>Harris wants to bump up the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%, while also proposing some specific breaks for small businesses.The vice president has also proposed an expanded earned-income tax credit aimed at lower earners, and she wants to restore and expand upon a more generous child tax credit, similar to the one implemented under Biden's pandemic-relief bill in 2021. Harris also shares some middle ground with Trump in terms of wanting to eliminate taxes on tips.For high-income earners, Harris supports two measures that have gained traction during the Biden administration: targeting ultrawealthy investors' capital gains, and imposing a minimum income tax on billionaires.<h2 id="2804ce0e-fc32-40e9-803e-c53a6b31f02b"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-costs-presidential-election-scenarios-parents-paid-leave-harris-trump-2024-10">Childcare</a></h2><h3 id="ed726a64-f988-4421-a339-c95f21949f4f">Trump</h3>Trump has also proposed expanding the child tax credit, which currently provides up to $2,000 per child. In August, the vice presidential candidate JD Vance floated a child tax credit proposal that would include $5,000 per child for families of all income levels.In addition, while previously in office, Trump signed a bipartisan bill that provided federal employees with 12 weeks of paid parental leave, although he hasn't emphasized the issue on the 2024 campaign trail.<h3 id="e35abccd-064c-4d14-947d-2de0192dc4b9">Harris</h3>Harris has promised to cap families' childcare costs at no more than 7% of their incomes, compared to the between 8% and 19.3% spent by the median American family in 2022. The vice president's child tax credit policy would restore the enhanced pandemic-era credit, giving parents up to $3,600 annually per child, with the amount dependent on a child's age and family income.Further, during her run for president in 2020, Harris supported a six-month paid-leave policy for Americans with a new child or a sick relative.

How the election will impact your wallet

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="20348245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zach" source="keywords">Zach</keyword> and Annie moved their family from <keyword id="19916114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="california" source="keywords">California</keyword> to <keyword id="20109210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scotland" source="keywords">Scotland</keyword> for a simpler life.</li><li>The couple, who have three young kids, loved California but felt that it was too fast-paced.</li></ul>Zach, 38, and Annie, 37, packed up their lives and moved their family from the US to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-home-renovation-old-abandoned-cottage-scotland-before-after-photos-2022-7">Scotland</a> earlier this year. They had been living in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-stunned-price-of-palo-alto-california-home-for-sale-2024-5">California</a>, where Zach — who was originally from Scotland — was working with the highway patrol. Because of his job, the couple and their three kids had to move frequently throughout the state. Although they had a chance to live in places such as Sonoma County and around <keyword id="19915272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley" source="keywords">Silicon Valley</keyword>, life always felt "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-i-left-silicon-valley-california-after-two-years-2023-12">extremely fast-paced</a>," Annie, who works in healthcare, told Business Insider. "Life just seemed to be work — or school for the kids — a little break and then repeat. They wanted to live a simpler life with their kids, away from the rat race and the pressure to constantly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millionaire-investing-saving-spending-financial-independence-retire-early-fire-2024-9">keep up with the Joneses.</a> Annie had always wanted to live in Scotland, and late last year — after a decade of living in California — it finally seemed like the right time for their family to seriously consider taking the plunge. <h2>Preparing for the move</h2>In a way, the move felt like it had been 10 years in the making. "Ever since I met Zach, I've wanted to live in Scotland. It's just been me slowly wearing him down and trying to get him to come back," Annie said. The timing for their move was right, in part because their kids were still young. "We knew if we were ever going to make the move, we had to move before our kids established true friend groups and got too far in their academics to where that transition would be difficult," Annie said. The couple knew they wanted to be in the East Lothian area just outside Edinburgh because it was near where Zach grew up. It was also a place that their kids were familiar with. "We made an effort pretty much every year, apart from during COVID-19, to travel back to Scotland," Zach said. "So when we said that we were moving to Scotland, they were all for it for the most part." While Zach and their kids had UK passports, Annie had to apply for a spousal visa, which she said took about two months to be approved. Then came the exciting part: looking for a <keyword id="7173" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="house" source="Orion">house</keyword>. Thankfully, the process wasn't too hard, even though they were still living in California at the time. <div type="image" title="Zach and Annie moved from California to Scotland with their three young kids." height="4284" width="5712" msid="113889826" hostid="261"></div>"Annie's hobby is looking at houses all around the world, she's constantly browsing for fun," Zach said. When the listing for a cozy three-bedroom house came up, the couple jumped on the opportunity. "When it popped up, I thought it was ridiculously underpriced," Annie said. "It was actually the only house that Zach's parents went and toured for us." It was something we felt we had in the States, especially in California, where house prices are crazy," Zach said. <h2>Getting settled into their home</h2>Zack and Annie are part of a wave of California residents who are choosing to leave the state. Between 2021 and 2022, 817,669 people left California — making it the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-states-americans-are-moving-to-florida-texas-california-2023-10">US state with the most people moving out</a>. Since the couple bought their house without viewing it in person, they were a little concerned that it would feel too small for their family of five. "We just moved from a pretty large four-bedroom house that's at least 2,000 square feet in the States to about 950 square feet in Scotland," Annie said. "That's a big change. But when we walked in, the rooms were all really nicely sized, and they just felt right." They spent about two months renovating the place while living with Zach's parents. It wasn't until late July that they finally moved into their new house. <div type="image" title="The dining area." height="1562" width="1179" msid="113889823" hostid="261"></div>"The kids never saw the house unfinished. The moment they stepped in the door, their room was decorated and they had their beds set up with all their toys on it," Annie said. "They walk in and they think everything's beautiful when we actually shed blood, sweat, and tears trying to make it a home, but it was definitely worth it." It's also really easy for the family to get around their neighborhood on foot. The main street of their town — where there are cafés, shops, and a grocery store — is only a 10-minute walk away, Annie said. "We have trails just outside our doorstep where the kids can go explore. There are beaches not too far away," she said, adding that there's no need for a car unless they're driving the kids to their grandparents' place. <div type="image" title="The bathroom." height="4032" width="3024" msid="113889821" hostid="261"></div>"It's a process to get every child loaded up in a car, so we wanted to reduce that as much as possible. And now we just walk to everything we do, and I feel we're healthier for it," she said. If they're ever feeling up for a small adventure, they can easily drive 20 minutes to the various small towns around them, Zach said. "Whereas in the States, if we wanted to go do something different or outside our little area, it's probably a 45-minute drive and then it becomes more of a day trip," he said. <h2>A simple life</h2>The couple says that life in Scotland is simpler — which is exactly what they were looking for. "That's about, give or take, the pace of occupational transitions we had during COVID."Some areas will see growth, namely roles in healthcare and STEM, Ellingrud said. About 85% of the jobs that AI will likely impact, meanwhile, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-at-risk-from-ai-replace-change-chatgpt-automation-study-2023-7">fit into four categories </a>— administrative assistance, customer service and sales, food service, and production and manufacturing, according to McKinsey.Many of those jobs involve repetitive work, data collection, and elementary data processing, all of which could be handled by automation, according to a McKinsey <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/generative-ai-and-the-future-of-work-in-america#/">report</a> co-authored by Ellingrud. The report estimated that about 11.8 million workers in roles with shrinking demand will need to move into new lines of work by 2030.But everyone should prepare for at least some changes to their current role.Between the widespread adoption of generative AI and what Ellingrud called "old school automation," about 30% of everyone's work will need to adapt to the changes the technology will bring to the workplace.

I am a very artistic and creative person, and accounting is not.I felt extremely constricted by the time and type of work. It was: Here's how you balance your sheets. Here's how you input this number and output this thing. It was very rules-based and very process-driven. So I quit after a year.Everyone called me crazy.A lot of people said to me: "You're so lucky to get this out of high school. You don't know how competitive it is to try to get one of these positions even in your penultimate year or when you've just majored in accounting."<h2 id="14dc5ae9-a07c-4422-b3ff-84e4104b0241">I didn't know myself</h2>My parents had always said, "When you're 18, you're going to be living by yourself."So when I got into college, I was thinking of ways I could support myself. I was interested in business at the time, and there were these paid accounting cadetships.Those are basically accounting firms hiring you straight out of high school, where they basically give you a four-year contract and you work on a rotating basis, like full-time the first year and part-time the next.A lot of it was also very vanity-driven, right? That ended up being a seven-figure business. I was 24 when I exited it.At that point, I thought about whether I wanted to join a company like Facebook or Google, but something I really wanted to do was to learn five languages in a year.It was 2019, there was no Covid, and there was no such thing as remote work, or it was very, very rare, and so working at Google or Facebook would limit my freedom.I ended up choosing to work for a very young startup, and I helped them raise their Series A.It was minimal pay, but it meant that for that year, I could travel and work remotely. I could now work for a Big Tech company.I joined Stripe. They're not humongous, but they are considerably larger than what I was used to.In that role, I had so much freedom and creativity to design it how I wanted. Even though it was a completely different choice, it still matched my values of curiosity, creativity, freedom, and relationship-building.<div type="image" title="Lily Wu at Stripe in Jakarta" height="858" width="1144" msid="112925666" hostid="261" sizebytes="49280"></div>Finally, I pitched my own role at a Chinese cross-border digital marketing agency — again, a completely different industry from what I'd done before. But it fulfilled my curiosity because digital marketing gives a lot of exposure to wider companies and people.<h2 id="d8b4ec27-a4ae-4c26-8801-3391b02ba3e9">Values guide my career</h2>I've definitely had periods where I didn't have a lot of self-confidence, especially when I switched from a startup to a Big Tech company.I didn't know whether it was possible to get the job, scope, pay, and experiences I was looking for.Whenever I start a job, I list all the experiences that I want to learn from it. Before I joined Stripe, a startup, or my current company, I knew there were certain skills I wanted to get out of those roles.I left Stripe after two and a half years because I felt like, in that specific role, I had learned everything that I had set out to learn.I don't have any regrets.I have no certainty about what I want to do in the future.But, to me, understanding what my values are makes me feel like this is the person I want to become and will be in 10 years, regardless of what I choose to do.I know that if I have this North Star metric and that is my compass — do my actions match up to those values — I know I'll be OK in 10 years' time. I'll be a curious creative, and have a strong relationship with freedom.

He was into hockey, and he also liked to draw and design new versions of Nike sneakers, which turned into an interest in art.Chesky's high school yearbook quote was, "I'm sure I'll amount to nothing." He thought it was funny — his dad didn't.In 1999, Chesky attended Rhode Island School of Design, where he served as captain of the hockey team and studied industrial design.At RISD, Chesky met Joe Gebbia, with whom he would eventually cofound Airbnb. Right before graduation, Gebbia reportedly pulled Chesky aside and said, "Before you get on the plane, there's something I need to tell you. Chesky and his team were three weeks away from filing for Airbnb's IPO.The early days of the pandemic seemed grim. Airbnb's revenue plummeted 80% due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ipo-goldman-sachs-pandemic-2022-7">COVID-related travel restrictions</a>. The company burned through its cash reserves and opted to raise $2 billion in debt and equity financing to stay afloat. On its first day of trading, the company was valued at $86 billion, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ipo-valuation-tops-three-hotel-chains-combined-opening-day-2020-12">more than hotel rivals Marriott, Hilton, and Intercontinental combined</a>.Between 2020 and 2022, when interest rates were relatively low, many people bought homes to use as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-first-homes-are-ones-they-rent-out-on-airbnb-2022-4">investment properties</a>, planning to rent them out on Airbnb and other short-term-rental sites to help cover their mortgages or simply make extra money.Demand for travel and experiences surged— so much so that Airbnb recorded its first profitable year in 2022, with a $1.9 billion profit. (It lost $352 million in 2021.)<h2 id="08c2048b-dd4b-4ead-ac82-e1a390b2d4e2">Chesky gives back often</h2>Chesky and Airbnb's two other cofounders publicly signed the Giving Pledge in 2016, a philanthropic initiative started by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaires-join-the-bill-gates-and-warren-buffet-giving-pledge-to-give-away-their-wealth-2016-6">Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Melinda French Gates</a>. By doing so, they promise to donate more than half of their wealth within their lifetimes.In 2022, Chesky personally donated $100 million to the Voyagers Scholarship run by former <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.obama.org/press-releases/the-obamas-and-brian-chesky-announce-the-inaugural-cohort-of-voyager-scholarship-recipients/">President and First Lady Obama</a>, which awards $50,000 in tuition for college juniors pursuing public service. Airbnb provides housing to recipients for summer internships and post-grad travel.When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Chesky announced the company would work to house 100,000 refugees with free two-week stays.In November 2022, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-home-listing-free-aircover-guest-verification-2022-11">Chesky listed a guest room </a>in his home on Airbnb, featuring a queen-sized bed and a piece of Airbnb history: the novelty cereal boxes that Chesky sold in 2008 to fund the early days of the company. Chesky told outlets he would make cookies and go to the gym with guests.<h2 id="f8474071-426e-4de9-baaf-881789cfc349">Short-term rental crackdowns and layoffs plagued Airbnb after its profitable year</h2>Countless other real-estate firms conducted mass layoffs due to the cooling housing market. In March 2023, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-tech-layoffs-25-companies-that-have-laid-people-off-2022-7">Airbnb cut 30% of its recruiting staff</a>, representing 0.4% of its total headcount of 6,800.In August — amid protests from locals — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barcelona-airbnb-ban-florence-amsterdam-lisbon-are-regulations-working-2024-8">Barcelona</a> said it would push to fully ban and eliminate all of its registered short-term rental listings by 2028. So where are Gen Z's tech founders?Boomers had Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaire-bunker-miami-bezos-tom-brady-ivanka-trump-security-2024-9">Jeff Bezos</a>. Gen X produced Sergey Brin, Elon Musk, Travis Kalanick, and Peter Thiel. Millennials boasted droves of swaggering disruptors: Mark "I'm CEO, Bitch," Zuckerberg, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Brian Chesky, and, more notoriously, Elizabeth Holmes and Sam Bankman-Fried — all of whom were upending norms, in the spotlight, and on their way to billions by their early 20s.Now the oldest members of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-sick-leave-pto-mental-health-work-from-home-2024-8">Gen Z</a> are 27 — yet there's no Zoomer Zuck in sight. Their generation has been billed as coddled, complacent, and uninterested in the grind, intent on drawing hard lines in work-life balance. Millennials give off girlboss vibes; Gen Zers tout "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lazy-girl-job-trend-tiktok-explained-defending-low-stress-work-2023-7">lazy girl jobs</a>." Move fast and break things? No cap, that's sus.In reality, zoomers aren't to blame for their lack of progress in Silicon Valley. Gen Z founders and would-be founders are stepping into a vastly different tech world from that of their predecessors — a world where launching a unicorn is far more difficult, and publicly scrutinized, than it was for the garage-band generation of Jobs and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-still-pulling-strings-microsoft-ai-copilot-chatgpt-2024-4">Gates</a>. And that has prompted many Gen Zers to question whether they even want to strive for that level of world-conquering superstardom.Founders "are as zealous and as smart as they were 20 years ago," said Jerry Neumann, a venture capitalist and adjunct professor at Columbia University. It's the tech industry itself that isn't evolving as rapidly as it once did. When millennials were young, the internet was new, nearly lawless, and ripe not necessarily for disruption but for defining. Then came the iPhone, a technological advance that changed society, making ideas like Uber, Instagram, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dating-apps-find-love-romance-online-tinder-match-total-scam-2024-10">Bumble</a> possible. Gen Z is coming of age in an era when the same Big Tech companies are diffuse and dominant. "There's just not that same technological opportunity to build big companies fast," Neumann said. In other words, millennial founders ran so that Gen Z founders could walk.Today, young founders are mostly left to work on incremental technological innovations in a mature market, which are often bought up by the bigger companies well before their founders become household names. That may mark a successful startup exit but not a path to fame. "In order to be the next Zuckerberg or Elon Musk, you need to be a disruptor," said Kimberly Eddleston, a professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at Northeastern University. These big-name founders "either disrupted an industry or created a brand-new industry," she added. As the tech industry's biggest companies have maintained their hold, they've acquired competitors and new technologies. Even if Facebook doesn't carry the same cache of cool as it did in 2009, nearly half of humanity still uses Meta's various — mostly acquired — products, like Instagram and WhatsApp, without any clear upstart challengers.Entrepreneurial Gen Zers are also facing a tougher road to funding. Gone are the days of walking into Thiel's office in a hoodie and watching him make it rain. From the final quarter of 2021 to the final quarter of 2023, venture-capital investment plummeted from $52.8 billion to $10.6 billion, the lowest of any quarter since 2019. Rising interest rates, paired with the cautionary tales of the likes of Adam Neumann and Holmes, have increased scrutiny. Though that makes the barrier to entry for a tech startup higher, perhaps the ideas that survive it will be more valuable. "There's been a good refresh," said Alexandra Debow, a 22-year-old who dropped out of New York University and has raised pre-seed money for her photo-sharing social app Swsh. "People don't just want hype. People want true value behind it."AI firms are the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-startups-rapid-funding-rounds-2024-9#:~:text=Suddenly%2C%20it's%20feeling%20very%20%222021,AI%20firms%2C%20risking%20inflated%20valuations.">exception to the trend</a>, and investors are still pouring money into them. Perhaps not coincidentally, that's also the industry in which perhaps the biggest Gen Z founder reigns. Alexandr Wang, the 27-year-old who cofounded Scale AI in 2016 when dropping out of MIT, has become one of the world's youngest self-made billionaires, with a net worth of $2 billion. His company employs contractors who do the grunt work of labeling data for companies to train machine-learning models. And while Wang has become the subject of profiles in major publications, his name calls up little recognition outside the tech world. Scale AI did not make Wang available for an interview for this story.There's also a vibe shift among younger founders: Some are less interested in becoming massive public figures and facing the backlash that ultimately follows. They grew up in a trail of destruction left by rapid tech advances. They've seen a smiling Zuckerberg on the cover of Wired in 2016 under the headline "Could Facebook Save Your Life?" and they've seen him on the cover again just 15 months later, his face bruised and bloodied, with the outlet teasing a feature about "how a confused, defensive social media giant steered itself into a disaster." "When you move fast and break things in healthcare, you go to jail," said Ibrahim Rashid, 27, who founded Strong Haulers, a startup meant to help people manage their symptoms of illnesses like long COVID. "When you move fast and break things in social media, you destroy elections." Rashid didn't set out to be a founder, but his personal experience with long COVID gave him the idea. He started the company in 2022 but has kept working in sustainable investing while building it.Rashid said he closely followed the story of Holmes, who is now serving 11 years in prison for defrauding investors and lying about the ability of her technology at Theranos to diagnose a wide variety of diseases from a drop of blood. There's also Bankman-Fried and Martin Shkreli, who were on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Enough past hotshots have gone on to ignominy that the list has come to be known as cursed; last year, Forbes even began a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/forbes-hall-shame-30-under-30-lists-regrets-sbf-ftx-2023-11#:~:text=Plenty%20of%20people%20on%20the,and%20most%20are%20in%20finance.">Hall of Shame</a>" for its disgraced recipients. (Rashid ultimately did not make the final "30 Under 30" list for 2023, for which he was submitted.) When Alexis Barreyat, a cofounder of the social-media app BeReal, was named to Fortune's "40 Under 40" list in 2022 at 27, his entry appeared not with a headshot but a blank avatar. Barreyat did not respond to emailed questions for this story.Several young founders think the spotlight might not be worth the scrutiny. "We try to take a lot more conservative approaches," said Julian Kage, a 19-year-old student at the University of Chicago who founded the diagnostic testing startup Exactics with other undergrads. "We want success, but we can see the downfall of how terrible being famous can be. I don't think we feel quite the same need to be put on a pedestal." Instead, he said, his startup has been slow to engage with the press and social media. It's starting to make content for social media, like educational videos. But Kage said the company wanted the science and the product "to speak for themselves," rather than taking on the role of talking head.Gen Z is more values-driven in the workplace than older generations. In a Deloitte survey, about 40% of young workers said they'd turned down employers that didn't align with their values or rejected work assignments they found unethical — about 35% of millennials said the same. That plays into how founders think about their companies and themselves. Gen Zers "expect you to be more casual and show up more as your full self," Debow said. There's little division between a Monday-morning office persona and a Friday-at-the-bar persona. It's partly from a place of encouraging authenticity, but also from growing up in an always-online, and always-watched, generation during which cancel culture took hold.With investors taking fewer risks and innovation happening at more incremental levels, Eddleston said the path to megasuccessful business owner seems to be operating backward; instead of people getting famous for their ideas, more people profit off their fame with a brand line. Think: Kylie Jenner's beauty line or the YouTuber Emma Chamberlain's coffee. These are safer bets for investors, she said, but safe bets could pass over innovation. "I'm nervous we're losing" the pioneering, American individualistic persona, Eddleston said.Perhaps we won't see Gen Z founders standing before a crowd and unveiling their latest shiny products anytime soon. But the young-founder era was likely more myth than reality. Though the brash Harvard dropout has long had an outsize hold on the public imagination, the number of people under 30 who owned companies in 2015 (when millennials solidly made up the 20-to-30 age cohort) had dropped by 65% from the 1980s. Harvard Business Review research found in 2018 that the most successful founders in recent years began their companies at an average age of 45. That's good news not just for Gen Z but also for millennials — the oldest of whom turned 43 this year. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Hurricane Milton is battering Florida days after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on several states.</li><li>Tropical storms are becoming more frequent, powerful, and costly.</li></ul>Hurricane Milton is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-landfall-florida-housing-market-insurance-fema-2024-10">pummeling</a> Florida days after Hurricane Helene <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/before-after-satellite-photos-hurricane-helene-destruction-florida-2024-10">battered several states</a> including North Carolina, causing widespread destruction and more than 220 deaths.The two events are the latest sign that hurricanes are becoming more frequent, more ferocious, and more costly. They're also hitting employment and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dockworker-strike-hurricane-helene-israel-palestine-iran-supply-chains-inflation-2024-10">economic growth</a>, at least in the short term."Hurricanes are the most costly weather and climate extreme event to impact the US historically, in terms of total dollars and average cost per event," Adam Smith, a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), told Business Insider.The US has experienced 363 billion-dollar weather disasters costing a total of $2.6 trillion between 1980 and August 2023, NOAA data shows. Hurricanes accounted for $1.3 trillion or about half the total cost, an average of $22.8 billion per storm.The number of hurricanes striking the mainland US has also jumped from 12 between 1961 and 1970 and between 1971 and 1980, to 18 between 2001 and 2010, and 19 between 2011 and 2020, per NOAA data.Helene has caused an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/analysts-estimate-up-to-34-billion-damage-from-hurricane-helene-2024-10">estimated $34 billion</a> worth of destruction, and Milton threatens to deal tens of billions of dollars in damage too, Jefferies analysts said in a note this week.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-harvey-katrina-comparison-2017-8">Hurricane Harvey</a> in 2017 and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-ian-estimated-cost-compare-most-expensive-us-storms-ever-2022-10">Hurricane Ian</a> in 2022 cost an estimated $159 billion and $119 billion each, ranking behind only Hurricane Katrina's $200 billion toll in 2005.Hurricanes are becoming more costly because the amount and value of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-category-four-storm-real-estate-market-insurance-damages-2024-10">assets exposed and vulnerable</a> to storm damage has increased, Smith said.He also said that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-hurricanes-why-storms-are-wetter-stronger-slower-2019-7">climate change</a> — higher ocean surface temperatures fuel stronger hurricanes, and warmer air carries more rain — has led to more rainfall, a greater risk of storm surges, and a higher chance of rapid intensification.The most severe storms have become more intense with about a 10% rise in maximum sustained winds on average, leading to a "roughly 33% increase in destructive potential," Michael Mann, a climate expert at the University of Pennsylvania, told BI.<h2 id="77eeb913-dcd7-49c3-a311-7df4b503d8e4">Economic impacts</h2>Before Milton made landfall, analysts at Oxford Economics said in a note that about 2.8% of US GDP was in its direct path. They estimated that a Category 5 storm could lower fourth-quarter annualized GDP growth by 0.14 percentage points, from a forecasted 2.3% to below 2.2%. Milton was downgraded to Category 3 before striking Florida."For Milton, tourism, trade and transportation will be hit," Ryan Sweet, Oxford's chief US economist, told BI.Helene is already poised to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-economy-israel-iran-war-oil-growth-inflation-hurricane-china-2024-10">reduce nonfarm payrolls</a> for October by 40,000 to 50,000 jobs, and Milton could deal a further blow to employment, he said. Job growth was trending at 167,000 a month, but that number could end up being under 100,000 this month in light of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-strike-costing-50m-per-day-as-negotiations-restart-2024-10">Boeing strikes</a> and Helene, even before accounting for Milton, Sweet said.The most economically impactful hurricanes disrupt energy infrastructure like offshore rigs and refineries, driving up national gas prices. They can also hit home sales and housing starts, and extensive flooding can delay the return of people who evacuated affected areas, and hamper rebuilding efforts, Sweet said.New research finds that hurricanes harm human health more than previously thought, exacerbated by climate change fueling more damaging storms. The upshot is "far more death and destruction," Mann told BI.He said hurricanes are causing "more death and disease, which definitely propagates through the economy."<h2 id="0c1a0582-4066-4b34-9f76-0a4a07c6172a">After the storm</h2>Some research suggests the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricanes-today-more-damaging-costlier-than-they-were-in-1900-2019-11">economic costs of hurricanes</a> are largely offset by the rebuilding efforts that follow. Repairs following a single hurricane can indirectly support nearly 248,000 jobs, generate over $17 billion of labor income, and contribute more than $30 billion to GDP, according to Implan, an economic data provider.In effect, every dollar spent on hurricane repairs generates another $1.72 in the economy, benefiting sectors ranging from retail and housing to banking and oil refining, Implan said."Rebuilding should provide a boost to economic activity in those affected regions in subsequent months, and potentially years," Sweet told BI, quoting from his recent note. "A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-category-five-threatens-florida-fema-funding-2024-10">ton of federal and insurance money</a> will flow into the impacted areas, which will boost economic activity."The damage might be offset for now, but whether that will continue with rising temperatures and soaring costs remains uncertain.Eventually, "increasing hurricane damages will exceed the coping capacities" of the US economy, according to a 2022 paper published by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
