A global team of scientists has identified 21 existing drugs that stop the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Notably, four of these compounds were found to work synergistically with <keyword id="8775508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="remdesivir">remdesivir</keyword>, a current standard-of-care treatment for Covid-19, said the study published in the journal Nature. "Remdesivir has proven successful at shortening the recovery time for patients in the hospital, but the drug doesn't work for everyone who receives it. That's not good enough," said senior author of the study Sumit Chanda, Professor at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in California, US. "As infection rates continue to rise in America and around the world, the urgency remains to find affordable, effective, and readily available drugs that can complement the use of remdesivir, as well as drugs that could be given prophylactically or at the first sign of infection on an outpatient basis." In the study, the research team performed extensive testing and validation studies, including evaluating the drugs on human lung biopsies that were infected with the virus. They also evaluated the drugs for synergies with remdesivir, and established dose-response relationships between the drugs and antiviral activity. Of the 21 drugs that were effective at blocking viral replication, the scientists found 13 have previously entered clinical trials for other indications and are effective at concentrations, or doses, that could potentially be safely achieved in Covid-19 patients. Two are already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration: astemizole (allergies), clofazamine (leprosy) and remdesivir has received emergency use authorization from the agency (Covid-19). Four worked synergistically with remdesivir, including the chloroquine derivative hanfangchin A (tetrandrine), an antimalarial drug that has reached Phase 3 clinical trials. "This study significantly expands the possible therapeutic options for Covid-19 patients, especially since many of the molecules already have clinical safety data in humans," said Chanda. "This report provides the scientific community with a larger arsenal of potential weapons that may help bring the ongoing global pandemic to heel." The researchers are currently testing all 21 compounds in small animal models and "mini lungs," or lung organoids, that mimic human tissue. If these studies are favourable, the team will approach the US FDA to discuss clinical trials evaluating the drugs as treatments for Covid-19. "Based on our current analysis, clofazimine, hanfangchin A, apilimod and ONO 5334 represent the best near-term options for an effective Covid-19 treatment," said Chanda. He was responding to the Indian-American community's appreciation of his fight against the coronavirus. This is the first time that a president has recognised the scientific and research talent of the Indian-American community. A large number of scientists are engaged in cutting edge research in various aspects of medical science, including at the National Institute of Health, universities, research institutes and bio-pharma startups. There are an estimated 4 million Indian-Americans in the United States, of which about 2.5 million are potential voters in the 2020 presidential elections this November. As a presidential candidate, Trump was the first nominee to hold a separate election rally for Indian-Americans in October 2016 in New Jersey. Since then he has described himself as the best friend of India and Indian-Americans at the White House. Hubei is reportedly sweeping the province for undetected coronavirus cases by tracking and investigating purchases of fever and cough medicine

Haridwar/New Delhi, Jun 23 () Yoga guru <keyword id="6369109" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramdev">Ramdev</keyword>'s Patanjali on Tuesday launched what he claimed was the first ayurvedic medicine to cure coronavirus disease even as the scientific community the world over struggles to develop an effective cure for the highly contagious disease. Patanjali claimed 'Coronil' and 'Swasari' had shown 100 per cent favourable results during clinical trials on affected patients, at Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar. Launching the medicines at a press conference in Haridwar, Ramdev claimed "100 per cent recovery rate in 7 days". The Corona kit will be made available at Rs 545, said Acharya Balkrishna, the MD of Patanjali Ayurved. The corona kit will have medicines for 30 days. Patanjali claims that its corona medicine kit can also be taken as prevention for coronavirus. This is not an immunity booster but a coronavirus cure, Ramdev said. Manufactured by Haridwar-based Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, the medicine is the result of a research partnership between Patanjali Research Institute and the Jaipur based National Institute of Medical Sciences. The drug was clinically tried on 280 COVID-19 positive persons out of which 69 per cent were cured within three days, Ramdev said at the launch of the medicine held at Patanjali Yogpeeth in the presence of NIMS Director Dr Balbir Singh Tomar and allopathic and ayurvedic experts involved in the research behind making the drug. "100 per cent recovery from COVID-19 within seven days of consuming the medicine is guaranteed," Ramdev said. Coronil is made of the extracts of pure Giloy, Tulsi and Ashwagandha. A corona kit consisting of the three medicines - Coronil, Shwasari and Anu Tel. The other two medicines to be taken along with Coronil are 'Shwasari' which works on strengthening the respiratory system and cures the obvious symptoms of corona including cough, cold and fever and a nasal drop named 'Anu Tel' which helps build immunity, the firm said. Ramdev said the medicines can be ordered online through a mobile app from next Monday.

People in China are scrambling to get HIV medication after authorities said it could be used to treat the deadly coronavirus

<ul><li>A new study in the US shows positive signs that Gilead’s <keyword id="8775508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="remdesivir">Remdesivir</keyword> antiviral drug could be a promising treatment for the coronavirus.</li><li>A contradictory <keyword id="400282" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lancet-study">Lancet study</keyword> indicates Remdesivir is yet to prove its benefits in a statistically significant way.</li><li>Lancet’s study concludes that a larger benefit may exist — or Remdesivir might actually do harm. Either way, more data is needed.</li></ul>Biotechnology giant Gilead, claims that the antiviral drug Remdesivir works as a plausible treatment for COVID-19. However, a contradictory <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31023-0/fulltext">Lancet study</a> warns that there are no clinical benefits to patients who have tested positive for the coronavirus. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75452521" title="Gilead's coronavirus treatment remdesivir just succeeded in a crucial study, raising hopes for a first COVID-19 drug" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), told reporters that the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial has cut down on recovery time for patients. Lancet has not analysed NIAID’s results but the results from a study conducted in China, which was testing Remdesivir. According to the medical journal, the antiviral drug shows hope but the results are far from being conclusive. While trials should continue, a paper by <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31023-0/fulltext">John David Norrie</a> from the University of Edinburgh warns that, in the past, people have pinned their hopes on drugs like hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir-ritonavir only to be disappointed — even when randomised trials showed promise in the early days. Coronavirus recovery with Remdesivir In a lot of these early studies, recovery doesn’t necessarily mean being coronavirus-free. According to Fauci, recovery could mean many things. It could mean being hospitalized without ventilator support. It could also mean being discharged but needing oxygen support at home. At the same time, it doesn’t rule out an ideal scenario of being discharged without limitation on activities. The study that Lancet analysed also had similar constraints. On a scale to one to six, where one is being discharged and six is death, a patient’s results were considered to be successful if they only showed a decline of two points. “The study has not shown a statistically significant finding that confirms a Remdesivir treatment benefit of at least the minimally clinically important difference, nor has it ruled such a benefit out,” said the report. In cases where COVID-19 is caught early like within ten days of symptoms, were cured much faster than the others. However, these results are not statistically significant. Even Fauci pointed out that the difference in deaths — 8% in the Remdesivir group compared with 11% in the placebo — had not yet reached statistical significance. Lancet believes the results from Remdesivir are inconclusive Remdesivir may have the potential for treating coronavirus patients effectively, but as of now, it’s too soon to tell because most of the data that’s available is incomplete. The study in China, for instance, while being a well conducted double-bind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, and randomised trial — had to be terminated early, due to low enrollment. “The temptation to lower the threshold of convincing evidence must be resisted because adopting ineffective and potentially unsafe interventions risks only harm without worthwhile benefit while making it even harder to undertake trials to find truly effective and safe interventions,” said Lancet’s report. Investigators concluded that additional studies were needed to prove clinical benefit.“A larger benefit might exist, or Remdesivir might actually do harm. It is unknown—more data are needed,” it said. "There is no shortage of any APIs in the country. We have sufficient APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients) and medicines in the country," he said.Gowda was addressing the 5th international exhibition and conference on pharmaceutical and medical industry organised by Department of Pharmaceuticals, Gujarat government and industry chamber Ficci here. For another three months there is no shortage for undertaking production in the pharma sector, he added. "Our government has taken all initiatives to ensure that as far as our country is concerned the coronavirus should be stopped, and there is no hazard as far as this issue is concerned," Gowda reiterated. Coronavirus is a challenge and "we should make all efforts that need to be taken..., " he added.
