In the clips, Wang, who describes herself as an executive at an electronics company in Guangzhou, said that she was <a href="https://v.douyin.com/8sa41Le/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">set up on a series of ten blind dates</a> by her parents on a recent visit home.</p><p>Matchmaking is <a href="https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1000547/chinas-love-hate-relationship-with-traditional-matchmaking">common among more traditional families in China</a>. Single women over 27, who are sometimes <a href="https://theconversation.com/how-chinas-leftover-women-are-using-their-financial-power-to-fight-the-stigma-of-being-single-171698">derogatorily referred to as "leftover women,"</a> are often considered particularly dire cases by parents. </p><p>One of Wang's blind dates took an unexpectedly dramatic turn. The man invited her to his house to enjoy a home-cooked meal. But after <a href="http://www.news.cn/local/2022-01/07/c_1128241264.htm">districts in Zhengzhou city were suddenly locked down after 42 COVID-19 infections were reported,</a> she found herself stranded with him. </p><p>"He wanted to demonstrate his cooking skills and invited me over to his home for a meal. However, the <keyword id="11893994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19" source="Orion">COVID-19</keyword> pandemic caused a swift lockdown in the district we were in," Wang told Chinese media outlet <a href="https://weibo.com/tv/show/1034:4724466450890759?from=old_pc_videoshow">The Paper</a> on January 10.</p><p>"During quarantine, apart from finding him so quiet that he's almost as mute as a wooden dummy, the guy is alright. He cooks, cleans, and works. Even though the food he makes isn't too great, he still is willing to cook. So that's okay, I guess," Wang added. </p><p>Wang has been <a href="https://www.douyin.com/video/7050696957395782927">documenting the meals her blind date has been cooking for her</a>, with one video showing a plate of vermicelli accompanied with a side dish of fried egg. </p><p>Wang later posted a <a href="https://www.douyin.com/video/7051527686551850280">follow-up TikTok on January 10</a>, responding to her clips going viral on Weibo, the country's version of Twitter. </p><p>"I'm an older woman, so I was meant to go on many dates when I returned to my hometown," Wang said. "I'm currently still in his home. He's a man of few words and doesn't like to talk much, but because the clips went viral, he's been getting lots of calls from his friends. But thanks everyone for your encouragement." </p><p>As of January 12, Wang appears to be still stuck at the man's home.</p><p>"Another day of being fed," Wang <a href="https://v.douyin.com/8suBKyr/">wrote</a> in her TikTok caption on January 12. "My date says he wants to write a book about this experience." </p><p>Insider has reached out to Wang for comment. </p><p>Many districts in Zhengzhou are still locked down as local authorities mass-test the city's residents, per Chinese state-linked media outlet <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4725124920772844?">Xinhua News.</a></p><p>Swift lockdowns in China have been happening due to the country's Covid zero pandemic containment strategy, where entire cities shut down within a matter of hours to limit the spread of infection.</p><p>Around 20 million Chinese citizens are under lockdown. The city of Anyang, home to 5.5 million people, was <a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-health-china-64ca91f0f2315eabea84bb4a9d0801eb">locked down on Monday over two cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant</a>. Two other cities, <a href="https://www.insider.com/anger-erupts-over-hospital-system-failures-locked-down-xian-2022-1">Xi'an, where some 13 million people live</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-city-one-million-on-lockdown-after-handful-coronavirus-cases-2022-1">Yuzhou, a city with over 1 million residents, are also on lockdown</a>.  </p><p>According to the country's <a href="http://www.nhc.gov.cn/xcs/yqfkdt/202201/2586bb51113b45bbb7c00e86beeec0eb.shtml">National Health Commission</a>, 190 infections were detected in China across 31 provinces on January 12, bringing the number of active cases to 3,460.</p>

And when it's time to leave the house, he said, "a simple tap on my iPhone turns the lights off, adjusts the thermostat down, and locks the doors."</span></p><p>It sounds like a fairly innocent look into how Apple's CEO uses the company's own technology in his home. But it's also a veiled slam on both Google and Amazon, both of whom have been making waves around their Google Assistant and Alexa systems. </p><p>As Cook noted on the call, "W<span>e are leading the industry by being the first to integrate home automation into a major platform with iOS 10." Every iOS 10 iPhone and iPad comes loaded up with Apple Home, a Siri-compatible app for controlling your Apple-approved smart home gear from one place.</span></p><p><span>Meanwhile, Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant is only now starting to get built into a select few phones, while <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-google-embarrassed-apple-2016-10">Google Assistant only comes pre-loaded on Google's own Pixel </a>phones. Still, Amazon especially is winning a lot of acclaim for locking up the burgeoning smart home market as an easy-to-use starting point for automated living. Apple CEO Tim Cook explains how Siri improves his home life - and it's a subtle shot at Amazon

Here's why the Navy didn't shoot down the Russian fighter jets that buzzed by a US destroyer

It is reckless. It is provocative. It is dangerous. And under the rules of engagement that could have been a shoot-down," said Kerry.</p><p>"People need to understand that this is serious business and the United States is not going to be intimidated on the high seas … We are communicating to the Russians how dangerous this is and our hope is that this will never be repeated," Kerry continued.</p><p>The commander of the USS Donald Cook, the destroyer that the Russian Su-24 Fencer jets repeatedly buzzed, described the actions as "unsafe and unprofessional," and the type of thing that can lead to an accident.</p><p>Simulated attack passes such as these most likely violate a <a href="http://www.state.gov/t/isn/4791.htm" target="_blank">1973 agreement</a> between the US and the former Soviet Union.</p><p>However, the Russian jets were visibly unarmed and at no point emitted any electronic signatures that would indicate they were attempting to lock a missile on to the US Donald Cook.</p><p>Speaking about the incident, retired frigate and cruiser commanding officer Capt. Most stovetop rice recipes call for a ratio of 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice.</p><p>When using the Instant Pot, the ratio shrinks to 1 to 1 for most types of rice. "Because there is very little evaporation in the Instant Pot, you use equal parts rice to water," says Haymaker.</p><p>Whole grains like brown rice benefit from a little extra liquid - use a ratio of 1.25 parts liquid to 1 part rice.</p><h2><strong>Should I use the "Rice" button?</strong></h2><p>All Instant Pot models come with a "rice" button which functions similarly to a rice cooker. While it's convenient since you only have to press one button, it only works for long-grained white rice and is not recommended for other varieties like short-grain rice or brown rice.</p><p>"I never use the rice button," says Haymaker. "I've had much more success just looking up cook times for various types of rice and using the manual pressure setting."</p><h2><strong>How to make rice in an Instant Pot</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="A person rinsing rice in a silver bowl under a kitchen faucet" height="1414" width="1885" msid="84694626" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>If you follow these simple steps, you'll have fluffy, perfectly cooked long-grain white rice every time.<br /><br /></p><ol><li><strong>Rinse the rice.</strong> Rinse the rice in a colander until the water runs clear, and then drain it very well. While this step is technically optional, it does result in fluffier, better-textured rice.</li><li><strong>Add it to the pot.</strong> Once the rice is rinsed and drained, add it to the inner pot of the Instant Pot.</li><li><strong>Measure the liquid.</strong> To make white rice, you'll use equal parts liquid and rice. Note that you cannot make less than a cup of rice in the Instant Pot since it needs a minimum of about 1 cup of liquid for the pot to come to pressure.</li><li><strong>Season.</strong> Salt is a common addition, but you can add other flavorings like spices.</li><li><strong>Lock the lid.</strong> Turn the lid until it locks and make sure the valve is in the sealing position.</li><li><strong>Program the pot.</strong> Select manual/pressure cook (depending on your model) and set the Instant Pot to 3 minutes at high pressure.</li><li><strong>Use a natural release.</strong> Let the pot naturally release its pressure after cooking for at least 10 minutes. If the Instant Pot still hasn't unlocked, you can release the remaining pressure manually.</li><li><strong>Fluff and serve.</strong> Use a fork to fluff the rice and serve while hot.</li></ol><h2><strong>What about brown rice?</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="brown rice" height="1998" width="2664" msid="84694627" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Brown rice is a whole grain, making it tougher than white rice. This means it needs a longer cook time and a little more liquid.</p><p><strong>1. Rinse the rice.</strong> This step is optional but recommended. Drain well.</p><p><strong>2. Add the ingredients to the pot.</strong> Add the drained rice and enough liquid for a 1.25 to 1 ratio of liquid to rice. That means if you're cooking 1 cup of rice you should add 1 ¼ cups of water or broth. Season with salt and/or other spices as desired.</p><p><strong>3. Cook.</strong> Lock the lid and switch the pot to the manual/pressure cooker setting. Program it to cook for 20 minutes (or 22 minutes if you like softer rice) at high pressure.</p><p><strong>4. Use a natural release.</strong> Let the pressure release naturally for at least 10 minutes after the timer runs out.</p><h2><strong>How to make other types of rice in an Instant Pot</strong></h2><p>"All kinds of rice work well in the Instant Pot, from regular long-grain white rice to brown rice to risotto. It's just important to do your research to figure out how long you need to cook the rice," explains Haymaker.</p><ul><li><strong>Short-grained rice</strong> takes longer to cook than long-grained rice. Allow 8 minutes for white rice and 22 minutes for brown rice, using the same liquid ratios as above and a natural release.</li><li><strong>Black rice or forbidden rice</strong> should be cooked the same as brown rice using the same cook time and liquid ratio.</li><li><strong>Wild rice</strong> takes the longest to cook. Allow 25 minutes at high pressure and use a ratio of 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice, draining any excess cooking liquid. Use a natural release.</li></ul><h2><strong>Troubleshooting Instant Pot rice</strong></h2><p><strong>Rice is too watery.</strong> Make sure you cooked it long enough so that it had a chance to absorb all of the liquid. "The most important thing to remember when cooking rice is to use the correct cook time," says Haymaker. Drain the rice really well after rinsing to avoid adding too much extra water and make sure your lid is locked tight and the vent is sealed while cooking.</p><p><strong>Rice is mushy. </strong>It's likely been overcooked. Double-check you programmed the correct cook time. Measure the liquid carefully so that you don't add too much.</p><p><strong>Rice is burnt. </strong>If your rice burns on the bottom then there's not enough liquid in the pot (again, measure carefully). Don't make less than at least one cup of rice at a time so that you have the recommended minimum amount of liquid for pressure cooking.</p><p>Remember that adding other ingredients to the rice can affect the cook time and final texture.
