They typically remain dormant during the winter, but as this season grows milder, they're staying active year-round. Rats, roaches, and other creatures are winning against climate change, and it's bad news for humans

Climate Action 15: 2024's top global innovators powering green solutions

A deadly heat wave gripped large regions of Asia for weeks in April and May 2024. As temperatures climbed past 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius) in India on May 7, campaigning politicians, local news announcers and voters waiting in long lines passed out from the oppressive heat. From as far north as Japan to as far south as the Philippines, the relentless heat wreaked havoc on everyday life. Students and teachers in Cambodia were sent home from school, as their hand-held fans provided little protection against the stifling heat and humidity in their poorly ventilated classrooms. Farmers in Thailand saw their crops wither and mourned the loss of livestock that perished under the punishing sun. Hundreds of people died from the heat. Most of the planet has suffered the dire effects of <keyword id="20563038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-heat" source="keywords">extreme heat</keyword> in recent years. A weekslong heat wave in the southwestern United States in 2023 was described as "hell on earth" in Phoenix, where temperatures hit 110 F (43.3 C) or higher for 31 straight days. At the same time, Europe saw unprecedented high temperatures that killed hundreds and contributed to devastating wildfires in Greece. Regardless of where or when a heat wave strikes, one pattern is a constant: Older adults are the most likely to die from extreme heat, and this crisis will worsen in the coming years. We study <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword> and population aging. Our research documents two global trends that together portend a dire future. More older adults will be at risk of heat stress First, temperatures are hotter than ever. The nine-year period from 2015 and 2023 had the highest average temperatures since global records began in 1880. Second, the population is aging worldwide. By 2050, the number of people ages 60 and older will double to nearly 2.1 billion, making up 21 per cent of the <keyword id="21055680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-population" source="keywords">global population</keyword>. That proportion is 13 per cent today. These combined forces mean that ever-rising numbers of vulnerable older adults will be exposed to intensifying heat. To understand the risks ahead, we developed population projections for different age groups and combined them with climate change scenarios for the coming decades. Our analyses show that by 2050, more than 23 per cent of the world population ages 69 and older will be living in regions where peak temperatures routinely surpass 99.5 degrees F (37.5 degrees C), compared with just 14 per cent today. That means that as many as 250 million additional older adults will be exposed to dangerously high temperatures. Mapping the data shows that most of these older adults live in lower- and middle-income countries with insufficient services and limited access to electricity, cooling appliances and safe water. In historically cooler regions in the Global North, including North America and Europe, <keyword id="20707229" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rising-temperatures" source="keywords">rising temperatures</keyword> will be the main force driving older adults' heat exposure. In historically hotter regions in the Global South such as Asia, Africa and South America, population growth and increases in longevity mean that steeply rising numbers of older adults will be exposed to intensifying heat-related risks. Policymakers, communities, families and older residents themselves need to understand these risks and be prepared because of older adults' special vulnerabilities to heat. Extreme heat is especially harmful to older adults High temperatures are oppressive for everyone, but for older adults they can be deadly. Extreme heat worsens common age-related health conditions such as heart, lung and kidney disease and can cause delirium. Older people don't sweat as much as younger people, which makes it harder for their bodies to cool down when temperatures spike. These problems are intensified by common prescription medications, such as anticholinergics, which further reduce the capacity to sweat. Spending time outdoors in hot humid weather can cause dehydration, a problem worsened by the side effects of prescription medications such as diuretics and beta-blockers. Dehydration can make older adults weak and dizzy, increasing their risk of falls and injury. These threats are even worse in regions lacking access to safe and affordable drinking water. Poor air quality makes it difficult to breath, especially for those who already have lung problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. For older adults with physical health problems, temperatures as low as 80 F (26.7 C) can pose significant danger. And when humidity is as high as 90 per cent, even 78 F (25.6 C) can be hazardous to older adults. Nighttime heat is especially harmful for older adults whose homes lack air conditioning or who can't afford to run their air conditioners for long periods. The ideal temperature for older adults' restful sleep is between 68 and 77 F (20 and 25 C), and sleep quality diminishes as temperatures rise. A night of restless sleep can make an older adult more depressed and confused during their waking hours. Medications also can lose their effectiveness if stored in places much warmer than 77 F (25 C). Older adults also may suffer emotionally during stifling <keyword id="20472420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heat-waves" source="keywords">heat waves</keyword> Being stuck indoors when temperatures are unbearable can make older adults bored, depressed and isolated. People with cognitive impairments may underestimate the dangers of extreme heat or may not understand the heat advisories. Those who have physical mobility limitations or lack access to transportation can't easily travel to public cooling centers - if there is one nearby - or find relief in nearby "green and blue areas," such as parks and lakes. These threats are especially dire in low- and middle-income nations, where older adults are more likely to live in substandard housing and lack access to high-quality health care or ways to cool down in the heat. We talk about this as "systemic cooling poverty." What can be done? Policymakers can work to cut greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants and factories, which drive global warming, and develop effective plans to protect older people from heat risk. Older adults and their caregivers also can take steps to adapt. But efforts to help need to be tailored to each region and population. Wealthy municipalities can increase public investments in early warning systems and ride services to cooling centers and hospitals. They can use geographic information systems to identify neighborhoods with high concentrations of older adults and expand power grids to manage increasing demand for air conditioning. In regions with substandard housing, limited access to clean water and few public supports such as cooling centers, much larger changes are necessary. Providing better health care, water and housing and reducing air pollution that can mitigate health problems during heat waves require significant changes and investments many countries struggle to afford. The World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization warn that this decade will be critical for preparing communities to handle rising heat and the risk to aging populations. Across all regions, researchers, practitioners and policymakers could save lives by heeding their call. When you consider the climate-related aspects of the report, there’s a ton of good news: we have achieved massive strides in clean power generation, while cutting out a ton of dirty emissions from our products. However, scroll down to the bottom of the report, and you find a scathing criticism of the “western” approach to climate change. Here's a closer look at why, and what clues do such narratives hold about India's <keyword id="22513472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmental-strategy" source="keywords">environmental strategy</keyword> in coming years. <h2>Problems with the “Western way”</h2>The major criticism, as per the survey, is that the Western approach to climate change is far too alarmist. They argue that this “one-size-fits-all” attitude often fails to account for the diverse needs of countries like India. To that end, it also points out that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) promotes "accelerated and equitable mitigation pathways" that don't always align with the developmental priorities of <keyword id="20353838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="developing-nations" source="keywords">developing nations</keyword>. Additionally, the report notes that Western solutions often prioritise market-based strategies to sustain high consumption levels rather than addressing the root issue of overconsumption. The survey highlights that these practices are now threatened by Western capitalist ideals that equate consumption with progress. By returning to these roots, India can offer a model of sustainability that's both practical and culturally relevant. <h2>Fixation on technical solutions</h2>The Economic Survey also critiques the Western obsession with high-tech solutions, such as solar-powered buildings and electric vehicles. These solutions require substantial financial and infrastructural resources that many developing countries simply don't have. Moreover, they often overlook the broader environmental impact and lifecycle costs associated with urban sprawl and high-density living. <ul class="summary-list"><li>President Biden is banking that his environmental record will sway young voters to his side.</li><li>But many voters aged 30 or younger have little knowledge of his administration's climate policies.</li></ul>President Joe Biden has sought to use his pro-environment policies to boost his support among young voters, but most of them have little to no knowledge of his administration's actions to tackle climate change, according to a recent survey.A CBS News/YouGov poll of 2,230 adults conducted in April showed that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=6eae87095eca816c16c58280c637898cba9b0fc1da677609924928e9f0d27e24&amp;postID=663a3f952c3267408d0a3332&amp;postSlug=biden-climate-change-young-voters-environment-greenhouse-emissions-ev-2024-5&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scribd.com%2Fdocument%2F725103674%2Fcbsnews-20240421-SUN">28 percent of respondents aged 30 or younger knew "nothing at all" about Biden's climate actions</a>, while 31 percent of respondents in this age group didn't know much about his administration's policy stances.Meanwhile, 33 percent of respondents had some knowledge of Biden's policies, while only 7 percent said they had seen or read "a lot" about his administration's work.The survey also showed that 52 percent of respondents under 30 believed that climate change was an issue that needed to be dealt with "right now," with 20 percent stating it was an issue to tackle over the next few years and 13 percent indicating it was an issue to be handled in the more distant future.Since taking office, Biden has placed a high priority on climate issues — a monumental shift from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-oil-gas-industry-political-donations-environment-drilling-2024-campaign-2023-11">former President Donald Trump's political alliance with the fossil-fuel industry</a> — as he's touted tax credits for Americans to purchase electric vehicles and promoted rebates to make homes more energy efficient.On his first day in White House, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-rejoins-paris-climate-accord-and-who-revokes-muslim-ban-2021-1">Biden rejoined the Paris climate accord</a>, bringing the United States back into fold among nearly 200 countries that have pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/read-heres-whats-in-the-manchin-deal-for-bidens-agenda-2022-7">The Inflation Reduction Act</a>, which was passed by congressional Democrats and signed into law by Biden in 2022, made significant investments in the expansion of clean energy tax credits and included nearly $10 billion for rural electric cooperatives to purchase or deploy clean energy, among other measures.And many of the administration's climate policies are seemingly popular with the American public.When respondents in the CBS News/YouGov survey were asked if they favored tax credits to boost the energy efficiency of homes, 63 percent agreed, while only 17 percent were opposed to the policy.Seventy percent of respondents in the survey indicated that they backed regulations that would reduce the amount of toxic chemicals in drinking water, while only 9 percent opposed such efforts.The most polarizing Biden policy in the survey was the allowance of tax credits for electric vehicles, but even it had a plurality of support (43 percent) among respondents. Meanwhile, 35 percent of respondents opposed such credits, and 21 percent of respondents indicated they hadn't heard about it.

We might be a few months too late but we congratulate Tesla CEO <keyword id="19903807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Elon-Musk" source="keywords">Elon Musk</keyword> on the birth of his 12th child; our felicitations extend to Neuralink executive <keyword id="22138173" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shivon-zilis" source="keywords">Shivon Zilis</keyword> as well. It is no doubt a happy occasion for the parents, but when a person with as much street cred as Musk has his third child with one of his employees through IVF, we can hardly let the event slide without so much as wondering why the tech mogul keeps having children. Now, we do not want to go into the details of Mr Musk’s personal life or discuss his relationships with all the mothers of his children so far — Justine Wilson, Grimes and Zilis (we have a separate <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/thelife/personalities/news/elon-musks-12-kids-all-about-musks-dozen-kids-and-their-moms/articleshow/111280167.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">story</a> for that). But we can’t help but be interested in what is driving the owner of X (formerly Twitter) to expand his family at this rate given how committed he seemed to support climate action. Before you come at us with pitchforks for being child-haters, we’re merely stating what studies have already shown: having kids is possibly among the greatest contributors to a person’s carbon footprint. Though the extent of impact has been debated in the scientific community, no one can deny that there is a substantial burden on the planet’s finite resources as the population spikes further. Mr Musk has fathered a dozen children already. And there’s no telling when baby No. 13 would make an appearance. But we do suspect that the entrepreneur thinks his heart is in the right place. This could lead to economic and social problems in the long run. Mr Musk feels very, very strongly about this, and the majority of his children were conceived through IVF. “If people don’t have more children, civilisation is going to crumble,” he said at an event. “Mark my words.” Not only does he encourage people to have bigger families, but he’s allegedly said that he wants more ‘smart people’ to have kids (that explains it). He has also joked about doing his best to help the underpopulation crisis around the time news broke that he had secretly welcomed twins with Zilis in 2021. But was he really joking? <div type="twitter" handle="elonmusk" handlename="elonmusk" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="0" id="1545046146548019201"></div>And when he welcomed his third child with Grimes a month later, Musk tweeted about it again. This time, he lamented that population collapse due to low birth rates is a much bigger risk to civilisation than global warming. <div type="twitter" handle="elonmusk" handlename="elonmusk" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="0" id="1563020169160851456"></div>We’re almost certain he fully meant what he said too, given how unserious he has seemed in his intent of curbing the <keyword id="20212385" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-crisis" source="keywords">climate crisis</keyword> in recent times. And climate activists allege that all the baby-making is probably just another smidge of uncredible-ness to his already dwindling imagery as a climate champion. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Does Elon Musk care about climate change or not?" comment="subhead" text="Does Elon Musk care about climate change or not?">Does Elon Musk care about climate change or not? </cmsannotation>At this point, nobody can tell for sure. His brave choices to start Tesla have undoubtedly revolutionised the electric vehicle industry, offering a path towards cleaner transportation. On multiple occasions in the distant past, he has said that climate change is the biggest crisis facing humanity and he aims to address it through his work. Elon Musk has even proposed carbon taxes to incentivise a shift away from fossil fuels. However, his own lavish lifestyle paints a different picture. Musk's frequent private jet trips generate enormous carbon emissions, directly contradicting the environmental objectives of Tesla. Not to mention, since his acquisition of X, the platform has witnessed a rise in climate denialism, many climate scientists have left the platform frustrated, accusing it of becoming a breeding ground for misinformation. This directly undermines Musk's image as a champion for a clean energy future. Further muddying the waters are Musk's political leanings. His support for Republican politicians who downplay climate change raises questions about his own convictions. Clearly, this is hardly the first time we have reason to question Mr Musk’s motives for the planet through the lens of climate change. But if the SpaceX founder has changed his allegiances from the climate crisis to the fertility crisis, the world's richest man is putting his money (and genes) where his mouth is. Whether Elon Musk is having all these children due to the convoluted notion of saving human civilisation or simply because he adores kids or a little bit of both, is something only he — and probably the mothers of his children — know for sure. But this could just be the right time to ponder further about how individual choices can impact global discourse and vice versa.

If investors support such businesses, and consumers pick such products, our carbon footprint can be lesser,” explains Bhumi. “Every day is Earth Day. This is our only home, there is no alternative, and there is no plan B! <ul class="summary-list"><li>Carbon credits have seen prices nosedive as the market has come under increasing scrutiny.</li><li>"The integrity of carbon credits has been a big problem for quite some time," a researcher said.</li></ul>Amid a slew of net-zero commitments, climate-speak, and environmental activism, companies have been buying and selling carbon credits to reduce their emissions footprint. But the market is breaking down.In the past two years, demand for credits has plunged, sending prices into freefall. The recent COP28 climate conference was supposed to tackle the problem, but it failed."There are less credits that have been issued, but the demand is falling faster than the supply," Yvonne Lam, carbon market researcher at Rystad Energy, told Business Insider.The price for counterbalancing one metric ton of carbon dioxide, or one credit, is languishing at $0.64 compared to $18 in January 2022, according to one <a href="https://carboncredits.com/carbon-prices-today/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">carbon credit tracker.</a> Another data source, the Platts Nature-Based Avoidance price, shows a plunge to $3.90 per metric ton of carbon dioxide from $11.60 last year, according to S&amp;P Global.Demand is down because of a lack of standardized rules for governing carbon markets. Recent news reports and studies questioning the system's reliability underscored that lack of rules."The integrity of carbon credits has been a big problem for quite some time," Lam said.<h3>How does it work?</h3>Carbon markets basically package the canceling out of carbon emissions into tradeable items. One credit is a token that represents the removal of one metric ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, such as by planting trees.The idea is that by buying credits from governments or other issuers, companies would realize a cost for their emissions. They would also have an incentive to reduce emissions by selling any unused credits. There are different types of carbon markets: one is mandatory and another is voluntary. The former is managed by a state or international body, and it includes instruments like carbon taxes to regulate energy-intensive industries like utilities. The latter is where companies and individuals trade credits without being required to. And that's the one facing the heat.The problem is there's no centralized platform over which these credits can be traded. Voluntary carbon credits can be purchased directly from suppliers in registries — like Verra or Gold Standard — or through exchanges like ACX. That means there's no universal standard under which credits are certified and validated. "No one is overseeing what is being put up in the market itself," Lam said.In January, <a href="https://about.bnef.com/blog/carbon-offset-market-could-reach-1-trillion-with-right-rules/">a report from BloombergNEF researchers</a> said the total value of carbon credits issued and sold to help companies meet their de-carbonization goals could approach $1 trillion as soon as 2037 – under right rules. With tighter oversight, where companies can only purchase carbon credits that are vetted, offset prices could soar above $250 a ton."Today's offset market, built mostly on bilateral transactions for cheap credits, is potentially digging its own grave," the report said. "Buyers need transparency, clear definitions around quality and easy access to premium supply, or future years will resemble what we saw in 2022."Advocates hoped that a solution would come this month.In the Paris Agreement from 2015, Article 6 lays out some rules on how the carbon trade can work. But at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, countries failed to adopt those standards."The operationalization of Article 6.4 would have provided a new structure for a global carbon market, opening up fresh demand for credits, with the UN deciding the rules on eligibility," researchers wrote in a <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/market-insights/latest-news/oil/121323-cop28-lack-of-progress-on-article-6-likely-to-further-limit-carbon-market-growth" target="_blank" rel="noopener">S&amp;P Global note</a> Wednesday."Lack of progress on Article 6 [is] likely to further limit carbon market growth," they added.
