The results of the 'Swachh Survekshan-2017', a survey to determine the cleanest and dirtiest <keyword id="115307" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-cities">Indian cities</keyword> have been announced by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu. A total of 434 Indian cities were surveyed to get the results. 
 
While Indore (Madhya Pradesh) stood as the cleanest city in India, Gonda (Uttar Pradesh) was declared the dirtiest.

New Delhi, Feb 19 () India will switch to the world's cleanest petrol and diesel from April 1 as it leapfrogs straight to Euro-VI emission compliant fuels from Euro-IV grades now - a feat achieved in just three years and not seen in any of the large economies around the globe.India will join the select league of nations using petrol and diesel containing just 10 parts per million of sulphur as it looks to cut vehicular emissions that are said to be one of the reasons for the choking pollution in major cities.Sanjiv Singh, Chairman of Indian Oil Corp (IOC) - the firm that controls roughly half of the country's fuel market, said almost all refineries began producing ultra-low sulphur BS-VI (equivalent to Euro-VI grade) petrol and diesel by the end of 2019 and oil companies have now undertaken the tedious task of replacing every drop of fuel in the country with the new one."We are absolutely on track for supplying BS-VI fuel from April 1. Almost all refineries have begun supplying BS-VI fuel and the same has reached storage depots across the country," he said. From storage depots, the fuel has started travelling to petrol pumps and in the next few weeks all of them will only have BS-VI grade petrol and diesel, he said. "We are 100 per cent confident that fuel that will flow from nozzles at all the petrol pumps in the country on April 1 will be BS-VI emission compliant fuel." India adopted Euro-III equivalent (or Bharat Stage-III) fuel with a sulphur content of 350 ppm in 2010 and then took seven years to move to BS-IV that had a sulphur content of 50 ppm. From BS-IV to BS-VI it took just three years. "It was a conscious decision to leapfrog to BS-VI as first upgrading to BS-V and then shifting to BS-VI would have prolonged the journey to 4 to 6 years. Besides, oil refineries, as well as automobile manufacturers, would have had to make investments twice - first to producing BS-V grade fuel and engines and then BS-VI ones," he said. State-owned oil refineries spent about Rs 35,000 crore to upgrade plants that could produce ultra-low sulphur fuel. This investment is on top of Rs 60,000 crore they spent on refinery upgrades in the previous switchovers. BS-VI has a sulphur content of just 10 ppm and emission standards are as good as CNG. Originally, Delhi and its adjoining towns were to have BS-VI fuel supplies by April 2019 and the rest of the country was to get same supplies from April 2020. But oil marketing companies switched over to supply of BS-VI grade fuels in the national capital territory of Delhi on April 1, 2018. The supply of BS-VI fuels was further extended to four contiguous districts of Rajasthan and eight of Uttar Pradesh in the National Capital Region (NCR) on April 1, 2019, together with the city of Agra. BS-VI grade fuels were made available in 7 districts of Haryana from October 1, 2019. Singh said the new fuel will result in a reduction in NOx in BS-VI compliant vehicles by 25 per cent in petrol cars and by 70 per cent in diesel cars. The switchover, he said, is a tedious task as every drop of old, higher-sulphur content fuel has to be flushed out in depots, pipelines and tanks before being replaced by BS-VI. "We are confident of disruption-free switchover to BS-VI supplies across the country," he said. "What we will be supplying is the best quality available anywhere in the world. You don't have any better fuel that is supplied in any part of the world. Perhaps our BS-VI fuel will be better than equivalent fuel in some parts of the US and Europe." India adopted a fuel upgradation programme in the early 1990s. Low lead gasoline (petrol) was introduced in 1994 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. On February 1, 2000, unleaded gasoline was mandated nationwide. Similarly, BS-2000 (Euro-I equivalent, BS-1) vehicle emission norms were introduced for new vehicles from April 2000. BS-II (Euro-II equivalent) emission norms for new cars were introduced in Delhi from 2000 and extended to the other metro cities in 2001. Benzene limits have been reduced progressively from 5 per cent in 2000 to 1 per cent nationwide. Lead content in gasoline was removed in phases and only unleaded gasoline is being produced and sold from February 1, 2000. The octane number of gasoline signifies the improved performance of the engine. Loss in octane number due to phasing out of lead was made up by installing new facilities in the refinery and changes in refinery operation. RON (Research Octane Number) of gasoline for BS-2000 spec was increased to 88. This has over time been increased to 91. A report by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cse&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Centre for Science and Environment</a> (CSE) has stated Alappuzha in Kerala, Panaji and Mysuru are the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cleanest+cities+in+india&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cleanest cities in India</a>. 
 
The survey-‘Not in my backyard’-, which is based on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=waste+management&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">solid waste management</a> practises in towns in India, placed Delhi at the "bottom of the heap". 
 "Alappuzha, Panaji and Mysuru are three of the <keyword id="3487316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cleanest-cities-in-India">cleanest cities in India</keyword>, with municipal waste management systems that actually work. CSE rated Indian cities on their management of solid waste - metros like Delhi feature at the bottom of the heap," a latest rating by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said. 
 
"This book started as a survey, we wanted to simply know which city is India's cleanest. We knew that once we found out which is the cleanest, we would also find out what makes it so. This would give us the answers for future policy," said CSE Director General Sunita Narain. 
 
Noting that the last survey to understand quantity and composition of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=garbage&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">garbage</a> was done over a decade ago, CSE said that the methodology used to calculate waste generated is to simply extrapolate an assumed quantity estimate with the population. 
 
Referring to the Department of Economic Affairs position paper on solid waste management of 2009, CSE said that urban India was already producing some 80,000 MT of waste a day. 
 
It projected that by 2047, India would be producing 260 million tonnes of waste annually needing over 1,400 sq km of landfills which is an area equal to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai put together, CSE said referring to the paper. 
 
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) estimates, over 90 per cent of Indian cities with a functional collection system dispose of their waste in landfills, CSE said.

	During the study, The Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at IIT Delhi observed the PM (particulate matter) 2.5 levels – harmful microscopic particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs. While short term exposure to PM 2.5 can cause allergies or bronchitis, chronic exposure can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and even lung cancer, which can eventually lead to premature deaths.

	 
	After the study, the Atmospheric Sciences Club concluded that PM 2.5 level was found to be 3.7+-1 microgram per cubic metre annually in Kinnaur, which is less than 10% of the national air quality target of 40g/m. Things can become clearer if you compare these stats with that of Delhi. The national capital has PM 2.5 levels of 148+-51 microgram per cubic metre, thus making it the most air-polluted city in the country.

Mexico to participate in clinical trials of Russian COVID-19 vaccine

The report on how <keyword id="2312336" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swachh-Bharat-Mission">Swachh Bharat Mission</keyword> was successful is out and states that cities in eastern and southern part of India did better than northern and western India. 
 The <keyword id="3246333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swachh-Sarvekshan">Swachh Sarvekshan</keyword> survey that gauged the impact of <keyword id="63500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cleanliness-Drive">cleanliness drive</keyword> in 73 cities stated that Mysuru remained the cleanest of all, followed by Chandigarh and Tiruchirapalli. 
 However, <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>’s Varanasi constituency was among the 10 dirtiest cities and Dhanbad ranked the worst. 
 
A first such survey was done in 2014, which was a 476-city survey. Then also, Karnataka’s Mysuru had emerged as the winner. 
 
If we compare the two analysis, cities that have improved include Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot and Gangtok. 
 
Meanwhile, the 10 dirtiest cities include Ghaziabad and Meerut. 
 
In Delhi, South and North Delhi Municipal Corporation improved rankings and were at 47 to 43, respectively. 
 
Tamil Nadu’s Chennai ranked 37 in comparison to its fourth position in 2014.

Similarly, 1.29 lakh candidates have become eligible for naturopathy and yoga courses and another 1.55 lakh students for B Pharma and D Pharma courses. KCET 2020 was held in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic, requiring the organisers to take extra precautionary measures, including physical distancing and sanitisation. It was held on July 30 and 31 at 497 examination centres across the state, with only 1.75 lakh candidates of the 1.94 lakh applicants appearing. Among the examinees were 63 students infected with coronavirus, for whom separate examination centres were set up at Covid Care Centres under the supervision of medical professionals. Likewise, the examination for students suffering from symptoms such as fever and cough was also conducted in separate rooms. It introduced a ‘Garbage cafe’ where people can bring in plastic trash and get a free meal in return, <a href="https://www.indiatimes.com/news/india/bring-plastic-waste-and-eat-full-meal-at-india-s-first-garbage-cafe-in-chhattisgarh-371570.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">reported </a>India Times Ambikapur, a city which is home to 200,000 people, launched the country’s garbage cafe scheme which offers ragpickers and homeless people free meals in exchange for plastic or any kind of trash. The scheme also aims to provide shelter to at least 100 homeless people. The municipal corporation has math in place on the food scheme. Every one kilo of trash earns a full meal, while 500gms earns a breakfast. The authorities have dedicated funds to the tune of ₹550,000, towards the cafe. The scheme has an ambitious plan to build greener roads using plastic waste. There are many such cafes across the world however India's plan to build roads through a garbage cafe makes it unique. Ambikar is the second cleanest city in India, <a href="https://swachhsurvekshan2019.org/Rankings/Morethan1Lakh">according to Swachh Survekshan 2019 </a>— a national ranking that determines the level of cleanliness in different cities across India.

A few months ago, my doctor told me that I couldn’t run outside anymore. I didn’t protest. For the past four years, I’ve gone on a run every alternate day in Gurgaon, in the NCR region. However, I find my stamina decreasing each year. And the headaches and coughs are getting worse. I finally caved in and went to a doctor after a bout of incessant coughing kept me up for hours at night. “Go to a gym,” he said, “and make sure that the gym has an air purifier”. On April 17th, <a href="https://www.stateofglobalair.org/sites/default/files/soga-2018-report.pdf">a report </a>released by the Health Effects Institute, an American non-profit, showed that India accounted for roughly 25% of all deaths related to <keyword id="55910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Pollution">air pollution</keyword> in 2016, while <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> led with 26%. Furthermore, India and China together accounted for 50% of all 106 million disability-adjusted life years, which is the number of healthy years lost in a person’s life due to air pollution. The report, titled “The State of Global Air”, explained that outdoor air pollution, or exposure to PM2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers), and indoor air pollution (the residential burning of coal, biomass and waste) together accounted for well over 6 million deaths in 2016. This makes air pollution the highest environmental health risk and the fourth highest cause of deaths in the world after high blood pressure, obesity and tobacco usage. And the problem is getting worse. The number of annual deaths attributable to PM2.5 have increased by more than 20% from 1990 and 9% from 2010 on a global level. Not only does being exposed to PM2.5 lead to lung diseases and respiratory infections, but it can also increase the chances of heart attacks and strokes and has been linked to diabetes, mental illnesses and degenerative brain diseases like dementia. As recently as last year, a toxic <keyword id="68139" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smog">smog</keyword> over <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> (in November 2017) resulted in a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Science/Ql9lrhoB3jixBXDzxrKJJI/Delhi-pollution-Smog-shortening-lives-say-doctors-as-hospi.html">threefold rise in patients</a> at the city’s Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute. Manoj Khati, a shopkeeper and long-time resident of Delhi, said that what he initially thought was a heaving cough turned out to be chronic bronchitis. "For three days I haven't stopped coughing, I felt as though I would die," he said in a statement to the AFP at the time. The Health Effects Institute’s report initially presents air pollution as a global problem by saying that 95% of the world’s population live in areas that exceed the WHO’s guidelines for healthy air. However, 58% live in areas that do not meet the body’s least-stringent air quality target (PM2.5 concentrations above 35 micrograms per cubic meter), and they are largely in the developing world - North Africa, West Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and China. In fact, the relative difference in PM2.5 concentrations between the least-polluted and most-polluted countries is rising rapidly, from a 5-fold gap in 1990 to a 11-fold gap in 2016, as developing countries are prioritising economic growth over pollution control. The report, does however, highlights China’s progress in reducing air pollution compared to countries in the Indian subcontinent. India has a population-weighted annual average concentration of 76 micrograms per cubic meter compared to China’s 56. While China experienced a dramatic increase in average weighted concentrations prior to 2010, its exposure levels have since declined. Meanwhile, from 2010 to 2016, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India have recorded the sharpest increases in PM2.5 concentrations in the world. The air pollution problem isn’t only restricted to cities. People living in rural areas are becoming increasingly vulnerable to health problems caused by the burning of solid fuels like biomass and coal for the purposes of cooking and heating. Household air pollution lead to 2.6 million deaths in 2016, a large share of which came from countries in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. A total of 2.45 billion people in the world are exposed to indoor pollution, of which 560 million are in India and 416 million are in China. The lower access to healthcare in rural areas makes the problem especially acute. Nearly <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2018/01/15/health/india-air-pollution-study-intl/index.html">75% of deaths</a> due to air pollution in India are said to take place in rural areas. Most importantly, the burden of air pollution falls disproportionately on the very old and the very young. Around 62% of the burden of disease attributable to exposure to PM2.5 falls on people above the age of 50, while 28% of the total years lost due to indoor burning of solid fuels fall on children below the age of 5. Not only are we failing our senior citizens, but we’re also failing the youngest members of our global population. I’ve started running on a treadmill in a swanky gym not too far from my house. I’m slowly building up my stamina again. But the headaches and coughs, while less severe, are still a problem. I can’t completely avoid exposure to the air outside. I have no option to leave my house every day during the week for work or on the weekend in pursuit of a social life. Like every other resident in the National Capital Region, I am trapped in a gas chamber. And because the day-to-day changes in air quality are minimal, we choose to ignore the problem. As the saying goes, if it’s everyone’s problem, then its no one’s. While the Modi administration has sought to protect its own by <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-pollution-air-purifiers/exclusive-faced-with-delhis-pollution-modis-government-bought-air-purifiers-idINKBN1GW0TR">installing air purifiers</a> in the Prime Minister’s office and six other government agencies, the government’s efforts to reduce air pollution on a local and national scale leave a lot to be desired. There have been a few steps in the right direction, however. At the beginning of this month, fuel stations in New Delhi <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/auto/car-news/bharat-stage-6-fuel-goes-on-sale-in-delhi-ncr-heres-how-itll-affect-your-car/1118188/">started selling Bharat Stage VI</a>, the cleanest category of fuel in the country. The move will need to be backed up the gradual phasing out of old vehicles and the priority production of compliant vehicles by manufacturers. Additionally, in order to reduce indoor air pollution, the government is also <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/6-000-new-distributors-to-boost-lpg-s-rural-reach-117101900465_1.html">expanding the distribution</a> of liquefied petroleum gas to people in rural areas. The Central Pollution Control Board is also setting emission standards for a range of industries from power to cement. In January this year, the government <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/mbErel.aspx?relid=175437">announced the launch</a> of its National Clean Air Programme, aimed at controlling air pollution in the medium term. Coincidentally, the environment ministry released the <a href="http://envfor.nic.in/sites/default/files/NCAP%20with%20annex-ilovepdf-compressed.pdf">draft guidelines</a> of the programme yesterday, inviting recommendations by the 17th of May. The guidelines include protocols for setting up an extensive network of monitoring stations, an air quality forecasting system, a pollution management plan for 100 cities and a plantation drive. However, the guidelines did not include any specific targets for pollution reduction and they were heavily skewed towards the monitoring of air quality as opposed to its improvement. The State of the Air report concluded on a note of urgency with respect to India. “If no further action is taken, population exposures to PM2.5 are likely to increase by over 40% by 2050”. If you thought the air in Indian cities was unbreathable now, it’s going to get a lot worse over the next three decades. We can all go to gyms if we can’t run outside, but where will we go if we can’t walk outdoors anymore?
