The MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPhone, and iPad use just two types of ports. Remember 30-pin? Now we have Lightning. Remember USB-A? That's gone too. And, of course, there's the headphone jack. Unless you're using the Mac Mini or an iMac, if you wanna connect something that isn't USB-C or Lightning, you're out of luck. Enter the dongle.</p><p>In 2018, the best-selling Apple products at Best Buy were AirPods and the Lightning-to-3.5 mm dongle. Both of these products exist because Apple got rid of the headphone jack. Here's the problem with dongles. They'll never be as simple or as effortless as just having the port in the first place, and Apple's dongles can be really expensive. If you want to connect any of Apple's laptops to an HDMI monitor, you need to spend $50 on an adapter, and dongles like this $70 multiport adapter add unnecessary bulk to the devices that are supposed to be thin and portable. Apple still ships the iPhone with a USB-A to Lightning cable. But if you wanna connect your Apple iPhone to your Apple laptop, you have to buy a dongle. And there's always a chance that you might lose that $20 USB-C to Lightning cable you just bought. It's one more thing you need to carry around or forget at home.</p><p>If you're thinking that you can find cheaper dongles on Amazon, you're right. Apple's first-party dongles are notorious for being more expensive than third-party options. But not all adapters are created equal. Cheaper dongles might not work as well as premium options, and many people like the confidence of buying their accessories directly from Apple. Once you've spent a ton of money and amass a collection of Lightning and Thunderbolt 3 dongles, you're locked into the Apple ecosystem even more.</p><p>But why do we have this horrible dongle issue in the first place? In 2016, Apple released the iPhone 7 without a headphone jack. It only had the Lightning port. Most people weren't ready for this, so Apple bundled a dongle in the box. But with the iPhone XS and XR, they've stopped including that dongle. If you buy a brand-new iPhone, you have to spend more money to be able to use your wired headphones. And if you do want to use wired headphones, you can't charge your phone and listen to music at the same time. Unless, of course, you buy a bulky dongle, and that costs $40, by the way.</p><p>And yes, Bluetooth is always an option. But Bluetooth isn't perfect. Bluetooth headphones are usually more expensive compared to wired earbuds, and the pairing process can be frustrating if you're using your headphones with multiple devices. Unless you're willing to pay a premium for something like AirPods, Bluetooth just isn't as seamless as wired headphones.</p><p>But it's not just Apple. Many companies have followed suit and gotten rid of the headphone jack or even USB-A ports on their laptops, but Apple made the switch very abruptly. They got rid of things like the SD card reader, which a lot of people still use for importing photos or videos. And yes, Thunderbolt 3 does have a huge bandwidth and tons of features, but a lot of devices still use other ports. Most monitors are HDMI and devices like mice, card readers, and hard drives still use USB-A ports. Not every laptop owner needs all of these ports, but for each one you do need, you have to buy a dongle or an adapter. If you wanted to use your new MacBook for everything you did with your old one, you would need to spend $158 to get your ports back. And if you don't buy all the dongles, your old accessories are now obsolete.</p><p>Apple has created an ecosystem where you have to pay more to add back in functionality. But there is a good side to all these dongles. It's good to have the option to connect to older devices. Apple's DVI or FireWire dongles can be really useful if you need to connect to older displays or hard drives. But no one wants to spend more money on dongles after buying an expensive device. Apple has always pushed devices forward to the next generation of ports.</p><p>One day, all devices might use USB-C. But we're not there yet. And it's caused a lot of fragmentation over the last few years. Apple needs to come up with a better option for users, like bundling multiple cables with a device. One day, we'll be able to put our dongles in a drawer with all our other outdated cables, not wanting to throw them out just in case we need them someday.</p><p><strong>Phil Schiller</strong>: Well, the reason to move on, I'm gonna give you three of them. Why Apple's dongle problem isn't getting any better

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>A new Google product, launched on Wednesday, is worth considering for anyone who thinks they needs better protection for their personal data and files. </p><p>You can now <a href="https://store.google.com/product/titan_security_key_kit"><span>buy</span></a> the Titan Security Key from Google. It's a little dongle that you plug into your computer or pair with your phone to help keep your accounts safe.</p><p>You may already have two-factor authentication turned on for some of your online accounts - meaning that when you log in with a username and password, you have to enter a second code, usually texted to you or delivered through an app.</p><p>The security keys replace the text-message part of that login process. Plug in the key, press a button, and you won't need to enter a code. Experts find that it's a safer way to do security, at least partially since it's way easier for a remote hacker to hijack your phone number than it is for them to grab a physical dongle off your keychain. </p><p>There are a few different brands of security keys available, because there's an official interoperability standard, called FIDO. Many companies uses YubiKey, for example. But Google's new security key brings some proprietary secret sauce, including a hardware chip that Google says helps keep the key secure. </p><p>In the Titan package, you get two keys: One with USB, for logging into a laptop or desktop computer, and one with Bluetooth and Near Field Communications (NFC) support, to help secure your phone. </p><p>For iPhone users, you'll have to download Google's Smart Lock app for the security to work. There's also a USB-C adapter, so you can still use it even if your laptop only has those ports, like Apple's MacBook Pro. </p><h2>It worked for Google </h2><p>One of the most common ways that people get hacked is through spearphishing. Basically, attackers craft an email that looks just like something you'd normally be inclined to click, like a bill or an email telling you to change your password. If you put your username and password into that fake site, then the attacker has it, and will probably try to use it to take over your account. </p><p>For businesses, campaigns, newsrooms, and other groups who handle sensitive data, this can be a big problem. All it takes is one employee who gets fooled to cause a bad breach. The Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless gaming mouse falls somewhere in the middle.</p><p>The Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless mouse offers fast connectivity, plenty of programmable buttons, and excellent accuracy, but the lighting is limited, there's no wireless charging, and it's not the prettiest device. It's best suited for large hands and a palm grip, but this heavyweight mouse won't let you down where it counts.</p><p>The Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless mouse costs $80, but it also comes in a wired version for $20 less. The soft-touch finish on the top and the main mouse buttons are flanked by textured surfaces on the left and right sides that add grip. It's extremely comfortable to use with a palm grip, and I particularly enjoyed the feel for long gaming sessions with strategy titles and sims that don't feature a lot of rapid action.</p><p>I don't think the Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless will suit people with smaller hands, and if you prefer a lightweight mouse, you should look elsewhere. The buttons have a good click to them, and this mouse feels durable. The mouse wheel is responsive and precise, but as a button it's a little stiff to press.</p><p>The left side of the Corsair Ironclaw feels terribly busy. There are two buttons to switch the DPI up and down near the front, and there are two side buttons above the thumb grip, which is a sloping surface rather than a wing to rest your thumb on. Up on top there's a button you can hold down to temporarily alter the DPI, which is very handy for sniping when you need an accurate aim, though I found it a little awkward to use.</p><p>Flip the <a href="https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/c/196318/614286/10014?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fcorsair-ironclaw-rgb-wireless-optical-gaming-mouse-black%2F6350465.p%3FskuId%3D6350465" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless</a> mouse over, and you'll see the switch to turn it off or choose between 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity and Bluetooth. I like the clarity this provides.</p><p>While there are three lighting zones to customize, the placement is odd. There's the Corsair logo, which is inevitably under your palm most of the time. Then there's lighting sunk into the depths around the mouse wheel, which isn't very visible. Finally, there are lights in the front grille, which looks great when you turn the mouse around, but aren't very noticeable when you're playing, unless it's dark in the room. My 11-year-old son also tested out the Ironclaw with "Fortnite," and he enjoyed using it, though ultimately decided it was a bit too big for him.</p><p>Switch the lighting off and use Bluetooth, and you might squeeze 50 hours from this battery, but with the superior 2.4 GHz connectivity and lighting on, you'll be lucky to get 16 hours between charges. This is a definite weakness of the Ironclaw RGB Wireless, though it's a common one for wireless gaming mice. Corsair provides a nice braided cable that you can plug into the Micro-USB port to keep playing and charge it up. It's worth noting, however, that the Chromecast defaults to forcing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-hdr-tv" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HDR</a> on all the time if you have an HDR TV. This causes SDR content to look overly saturated and artificial. To fix this, you simply need to activate the "Match content dynamic range" option in the display settings menu. Instead of using the Android TV platform found on some smart TVs and media players, however, the Chromecast marks the debut of the brand-new Google TV interface.</p><p>I've always found the Android TV platform to be perfectly serviceable but a bit drab and barebones in appearance and navigation. The new Google TV interface offers a nice upgrade, presenting a more visually appealing system with some quality of life improvements.</p><p>On the downside, the new look is now eerily similar to other popular streaming platforms and apps, like Fire TV, Apple TV, and Disney Plus. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as this general style works well, but it is a bit boring how interchangeable the design of these different services has become. </p><p>Google TV offers an attractive home screen, dubbed "For You," which features rows of icons for content recommendations, your favorite apps, recently watched titles, and specific content categories. A horizontal menu across the top of the screen lets you access additional hub pages for Search, Movies, Shows, Apps, and Library.</p><p>The Library section offers easy access to any titles you've purchased from Google Play or YouTube, along with access to a Watchlist that you can add titles to from any app available on Google TV. This offers a convenient way to keep track of movies and shows you'd like to watch, even if they're all on different services.   </p><p>A seventh hub page, called Live TV, is also available if you subscribe to YouTube TV. This tab makes it simple to jump right into live TV with easy access to the channel guide. Though YouTube TV is the only live service currently supported, Google plans to add support for other live services and apps in the future, making it easy to watch all your live content in one place.</p><p>Navigation is generally responsive with fairly snappy performance while moving between menus and apps. I did encounter some sluggish moments early on in use, however, with some lag between launching certain apps or returning to the home screen from Netflix. There was also an odd but isolated issue where the screen would go grey for about five seconds and refresh the menus.</p><p>More bothersome was an instance where all video streaming seemed to stop working except for YouTube. Though all the apps would load and allow me to browse content, an error message would pop up every time I tried to launch a video. Restarting the device fixed the problem and I haven't encountered it since. </p><p>Occasional sluggish moments and isolated glitches like those aren't a big deal as long as they don't become recurring issues. Based on my initial time with the unit, the Google TV offers navigation and usability that's on par with similar compact 4K streaming devices.</p><p>Finally, Google TV also allows you to use the included remote to access Google Assistant for voice search and other digital assistant functions. Searching for shows and launching apps with the Google Assistant is a breeze, and the voice remote can also be used to initiate playback from Nest speakers or pull up footage from a connected Nest security camera on your TV screen.</p><h2>Playback performance</h2><div type="image" title="Chromecast with remote 1" height="1125" width="1500" msid="78415549" hostid="261"></div><p>No matter how pretty an interface might be, it's all meaningless if the streaming apps don't end up playing correctly. Thankfully, playback performance is generally strong on the new <a href="https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/c/196318/614286/10014?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fchromecast-with-google-tv-4k-snow%2F6425976.p%3FskuId%3D6425976%26irclickid%3D1cmX7mXacxyOWblxU-SAVSQkUkiSLJzAwx2wSM0%26irgwc%3D1%26ref%3D198%26loc%3DBusiness%2520Insider.%26acampID%3D0%26mpid%3D196318" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Chromecast</a>.</p><p>For testing purposes, I sampled a variety of shows and movies from different apps, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-netflix-free-shows-movies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netflix</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-plus-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Disney Plus</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-is-hulu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hulu</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-prime-video" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Prime Video</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hbo-max-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HBO Max</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-rent-movies-online#vudu-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vudu</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-rent-movies-online#fandangonow-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FandangoNow</a>, Movies Anywhere, YouTube, and more.</p><p>Whether reliving the '90s by binge-watching old episodes of "ER" on Hulu, or tuning into the latest episode of Amazon's "The Boys" in full 4K HDR10+, playback is smooth, sharp, and free from any audio sync issues. </p><p>Dolby Atmos surround sound comes through correctly from supported apps, though I'm disappointed to see that Atmos support is not currently available through the Chromecast's Disney Plus app. </p><p>More concerning, though, is the odd lack of 4K HDR support for a few key services that usually offer this option on other streaming devices. Vudu, Movies Anywhere, and FandangoNow are all currently locked to HD and standard dynamic range. For comparison's sake, all of these apps offer 4K HDR support through a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roku-streaming-stick-plus-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roku Streaming Stick+</a>. </p><p>I've reached out to Google to see if updates for these services are a possibility and I'll update this section when I hear more. On the plus side, the Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Google Play apps all offer strong 4K HDR performance</p><p>Though I typically prefer to use the device's on-screen interface, casting remains a major playback feature for the new Chromecast. Whether streaming videos from various Chromecast-enabled apps on my Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone, or streaming my web browser directly from my Windows laptop, casting works without any major issues, seamlessly transmitting the image to my TV.</p><h2>The bottom line</h2><div type="image" title="Chromecast device comparison" height="1125" width="1500" msid="78415553" hostid="261"></div><p>Google's brand-new <a href="https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/c/196318/614286/10014?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fchromecast-with-google-tv-4k-snow%2F6425976.p%3FskuId%3D6425976%26irclickid%3D1cmX7mXacxyOWblxU-SAVSQkUkiSLJzAwx2wSM0%26irgwc%3D1%26ref%3D198%26loc%3DBusiness%2520Insider.%26acampID%3D0%26mpid%3D196318" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Chromecast with Google TV</a> presents a sizable step forward for the Chromecast lineup. In addition to the casting support buyers are familiar with, we finally get an integrated interface with on-screen apps and a voice remote. There are some minor drawbacks and issues with HDR playback from some apps, but general performance is strong. </p><h3>Should you buy it?</h3><p>Though I've been hesitant to recommend older Chromecast models over similarly priced streaming options from the competition, the new <a href="https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/c/196318/614286/10014?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fchromecast-with-google-tv-4k-snow%2F6425976.p%3FskuId%3D6425976%26irclickid%3D1cmX7mXacxyOWblxU-SAVSQkUkiSLJzAwx2wSM0%26irgwc%3D1%26ref%3D198%26loc%3DBusiness%2520Insider.%26acampID%3D0%26mpid%3D196318" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Chromecast with Google TV</a> has virtually all the features buyers are looking for. General performance is strong and, at $50, it's competitively priced. If you're looking for a compact streaming solution with 4K playback from Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube, the new Chromecast is a worthy purchase, especially if you're already plugged into the Google ecosystem.</p><p>However, if you're hoping to stream 4K HDR digital rentals and purchases from services like Vudu, FandangoNow, and Movies Anywhere, the current app limitations might be a deal breaker. This is something that could potentially be addressed in future updates but, for now, 4K HDR playback is limited to a disappointingly small selection of services. </p><h3>What are your alternatives?</h3><p>When it comes to other $50 compact streaming devices, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fire-tv-stick-4k-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roku-streaming-stick-plus-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roku Streaming Stick+</a> are both worth considering. </p><p>The Fire TV Stick 4K includes similar HDR capabilities as the new Chromecast, with support for HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. With that said, Amazon's device is missing a few notable apps, including HBO Max, Peacock, and Vudu. It does feature the Apple TV app, however, which the Chromecast is missing. You won't get Google Assistant on the Fire TV Stick but integrated Alexa support is included instead.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Roku Streaming Stick+ is also a solid option. On the downside, Roku's device only supports HDR10 and does not offer HDR10+ or Dolby Vision playback. On the plus side, the app selection is extensive and includes the Apple TV service, but HBO Max is still missing. And, though it's compatible with separate Google Assistant or Alexa devices, the remote uses Roku's own voice search system.  </p><p><strong>Pros:</strong> Compact dongle design, 4K playback with extensive HDR format support, big app selection, voice remote with Google Assistant, new Google TV interface with easy navigation</p><p><strong>Cons:</strong> 4K HDR support is currently missing from a few key services, some minor glitches, no Apple TV app</p>

Dongles, dongles, dongles.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Does it feel weird yet? Well,&#xa0;that's pretty much what using a dongle as your headphone jack is like: It works, but it's never not awkward.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Still, for the past week I've given it a shot with&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/motorola-moto-z-smartphone-photos-2016-7" target="_blank">Lenovo's Moto Z</a>,&#xa0;</span>the first major smartphone to launch in the US <span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/moto-z-dont-have-headphone-jack-2016-6" target="_blank">without the 3.5mm connector</a>&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">that's been ubiquitous for decades. (Chinese firms LeEco and Oppo had previously made the switch with some phones overseas.)</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Apart from letting me use the word "dongles" four times in my lede, this has given me a sneak peek at what millions of iPhone buyers might be in for come September. At this point, it'd be a surprise if Apple's next flagship iPhone&#xa0;</span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">didn't&#xa0;</span></em>dump the jack - a <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/apple-iphone-7-rumors-2016-7" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">torrent of rumors</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> have suggested as much, and </span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/how-apple-killing-headphone-jack-affects-headphones-iphone-7-2016-7" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">headphone companies are already preparing</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for the next phase.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So would that really be a big deal? </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Well, if my time with the Moto Z is any indication, yes and no.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To be clear: You'll live. There's been an endless stream of impassioned arguments against this idea in recent months - and I'm about to add another - but this isn't the end of the world. From an experience standpoint, a dongle is, at worst, an annoyance. It just makes the cable a little bit longer. Look at this&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://xkcd.com/1707/" target="_blank">XKCD comic</a>,&#xa0;</span>then keep&#xa0;things in&#xa0;perspective. All this has held true in my time with the Moto Z.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And again, Bluetooth headphones are a thing. You might be totally fine with them, and you might not want to go back to cables even if your choices weren't about to be constrained. That's not me, but maybe you're what's called a "normal," like <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/it-doesnt-matter-that-apple-is-killing-the-headphone-jack-2016-6" target="_blank">my colleague Steve Kovach</a>. The quality of wireless headphones has only improved in recent years, too.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But this is reaching. The only&#xa0;thing Lenovo can say it's </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">gained</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> specifically because it got rid of the headphone jack is that it helped make the Moto Z really thin. It's 0.2 inches thick, and you can feel that when it's in your hand. On hardware alone, it comes off like a premium, expensive piece of tech.&#xa0;<span>Same goes for&#xa0;Samsung's&#xa0;</span><span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/samsung-galaxy-s7-review-2016-3" target="_blank">Galaxy S7</a>,&#xa0;</span>which is 0.31 inches thick.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span>To recap: Thus far, the trade is A) Complicating a thing that's been convenient and universal for 50 years, for B) Making a slightly thinner phone. Thin phones are great. But they're&#xa0;not worth the trouble.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The root of the issue here is a false dichotomy. People who&#xa0;are okay with removing the headphone jack will say that clinging to an old standard is resisting progress. "Remember the floppy disk? It had to go!"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But when the floppy disk died, there were CDs and zip drives. If the headphone jack goes, it has A) Apple's Lightning connector, which is limited to only that&#xa0;brand's devices; B) USB-C, which has next to no headphones readily available and&#xa0;</span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.anandtech.com/show/10273/intel-proposes-to-use-usb-typec-cables-to-connect-headsets-to-mobile-devices" target="_blank">isn't finished yet</a></span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.anandtech.com/show/10273/intel-proposes-to-use-usb-typec-cables-to-connect-headsets-to-mobile-devices" target="_blank"></a>;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#xa0;</span>and C) Bluetooth, which gives you another thing to charge and sounds worse to people who genuinely care about audio.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nobody's against progress, but to enact it, you need two things: something dated to replace, and something superior to insert. You can make a case for the former. The latter doesn't really exist yet. This isn't a practical problem so much as it's an ideological one. Lenovo's approach doesn't add value. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If and when everyone goes all-in on USB-C, then there's the possibility of a real upgrade. USB-C&#xa0;can do all the digital tricks the future of headphones supposedly has in store, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> can serve an analog connector, meaning it doesn't necessarily have to come at a price premium. Right now, though, it's not there yet. The Moto Z reminds me of this.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Instead, we have a bunch of maybes. <em>Maybe</em> "smart headphones" that track your head movements and adjust themselves accordingly will become a thing. <em>Maybe</em> jack-less phones will all be waterproof. <em>Maybe</em> they'll all have bigger batteries without being huge. <em>Maybe</em> having noise cancelling all the time will be a revelation. </span></p><p>There's a lot of maybes, but we just don't know yet. Apple ripping off the band-aid might help,&#xa0;but it's definitely not the case at the time of the Moto Z's launch.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What we do&#xa0;have are dongles. Dongles that flap and flail around while you're walking, dongles with cables that could fray over time, dongles you can't connect to if you want to use a portable battery pack, and dongles you can't lose if you want to listen to music on your $625 Lenovo phone. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They're&#xa0;</span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">fine</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">,&#xa0;</span>but again, they don't add anything to the experience. They're an admission that the time is too soon to kill the headphone jack, and that something - its replacement, specifically - is missing.
