Kathmandu, Cinema halls across Kathmandu on Friday stopped the screening of '<keyword id="9776044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adipurush" source="Orion">Adipurush</keyword>', a day after Mayor Balen Shah warned that no Indian movie will be allowed in the Nepal capital if the film based on the Hindu epic <keyword id="6363500" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramayana" source="Orion">Ramayana</keyword> does not correct the "mistake" about the birthplace of Sita. The <keyword id="17720608" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nepal-film-union" source="Orion">Nepal Film Union</keyword> has urged all the cinema halls in Kathmandu to stop showing 'Adipurush' and urged theatres outside the capital to release it only after assessing the security situation. In a tweet on Thursday, the Mayor said that in 'Adipurush', it is mentioned that "Sita is the daughter of India". He added that until this mistake will not be corrected in India and Nepal, no Indian movie will be allowed to be shown within the Kathmandu metropolitan city limit. The film is written and directed by <keyword id="2236748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="om-raut" source="Orion">Om Raut</keyword> and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, the film has courted controversy in India as well. In a statement, Nepal's QFX Cinemas said: "Keeping the security of our viewers, QFX is not going to show 'Adipurush'... We are waiting for the government's decision. As soon as this issue is resolved, we will issue another notice and apologise for the inconvenience to our viewers." Nepal's Censor Board also decided to hold back permission to the upcoming Indian epic mythological film, based on the Hindu epic "Ramayana", for the same reason. Sita was born in Nepal's Janakpur and Lord Rama came and married her, as per the Ramayana. Besides Mayor Balen Shah, some sister organisations of various political parties have also protested against the film and warned that they will not allow the screening until the filmmakers correct the mistakes regarding the birthplace of Sita. This is not the first time that Mayor Shah ratcheted up the nationalist planks. Mayor Shah on June 8 placed the map of Greater Nepal in his chamber to counter the Indian "Akhand Bharat" map placed in the new Parliament building. <ul><li>One in three people are planning to watch a movie in the cinema hall or <keyword id="6403273" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Multiplex" source="Orion">multiplex</keyword> in the next 60 days. </li><li>26% of respondents had been to a cinema hall or multiplex in the last 60 days i.e. the months of November and December. </li><li>17% of the respondents indicated that they no longer watch movies in multiplexes or <keyword id="6584707" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cinema-halls" source="Orion">cinema halls</keyword>. </li></ul>With Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan <a href="https://twitter.com/taran_adarsh/status/1617554191739940864">recording </a>advance bookings of over 3 lakh tickets, the cinema theaters look ready to declare housefull shows again. And, it might just be the start of better times. As per a survey conducted by LocalCircles, 34% of the respondents (one in three people) are planning to watch a movie in the cinema hall or multiplex in the next 60 days. LocalCircles, which has regularly conducted the ‘Citizen pulse on Cinema Halls’ survey since October 2020 to understand expected footfalls during the pandemic and thereafter, reported that the percentage of citizens likely to visit a cinema hall/ multiplex has increased by 150% in the last year. There has also been an increase from December 2021 in the number of people planning to visit the cinemas at least once, and those planning to visit the cinemas multiple times. “The data comparison shows that as against 2% of respondents who indicated plans to go multiple times in December 2021, the percentage has risen to 6%. In the next category of those planning to visit once, the difference is much bigger at 28% in Jan 2023 as against 12% in December 2021,” added LocalCircles. Bringing people back to cinemas and events With cinemas across all states in India finally opening, there is a lot of optimism about this quarter kick-starting the recovery cycle for cinemas, audiences and the industry as a whole. BookMyShow witnessed a hockey stick growth in user engagement, traffic and transactions nearing pre-covid levels on the platform within just the first ten days of cinemas opening up. “Within the first 10 days of the movies releasing pan-India, daily consumer traffic surged to 76% of pre-Covid levels on an average while user engagement has been steadily rising the charts, already surpassing 66% of pre-covid levels on BookMyShow,” shared Saksena. Consumers from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have been quickest to return back to the movies contributing, 48% of the traffic recovery. To encourage people to come back to the big screen, BMS has been running a six-month-long campaign #CinemaIsBack that it has conceptualised and executed in-house team. “The campaign aims at targeting entertainment-lovers across age groups, geographic restrictions notwithstanding and social setups through various social media platforms, with the spotlight on the all-new out-of-home movie entertainment experience - different but not a shred less than earlier! It is a visual, socially engaging and meme-based series executed on digital and social media and will be amplified across BMS’s customer base and potential new audiences both on the platform’s mobile app and website through mailers, push notifications along with social media platforms as also digital media to engage audiences through relevant video, visual and timely content,” added Saksena. <div type="image" title="#CinemaIsBack_BookMyShow" msid="88342145" hostid="261"></div> BMS is also going to onboard brand advocates to highlight the safety measures being undertaken at the cinemas. Apart from movie tickets, BMS also sells tickets for other experiences and events too. So is the enthusiasm to those offerings encouraging too? “There is a definitive rise in demand across cities. However, the format of events (stand-up comedy, music concerts, festivals &amp; performances) will gravitate towards smaller-capacity ones (bars, restaurants, clubs) where Covid safety protocols can be implemented seamlessly. The pent-up demand for these events led to an average occupancy of 70% for an event with the 50% capacity guidelines, as permitted by the government. The capacity of these events typically ranges between 200-3000 attendees depending on the venue. We believe that audiences are elated to be back enjoying their favourite entertainment experiences thus providing some semblance of the pre-Covid live entertainment scenario. Currently, comedy, live music concerts and artist performances as well as regional theatre are amongst the most preferred and transacted events on BookMyShow,” explained Makhija. The response from smaller cities has been encouraging too and if the situation improves from where they stand today, both Makhija and Saksena are hopeful that the Tier II and III cities will contribute to the platform’s growth next year. Marketing during the pandemic While live events and cinemas were completely shut during the lockdown months, it was important for the platform to maintain its connect with its consumers. Apart from the #CinemaIsBack campaign, the strategy was also to keep talking to its audience. Why BookMyShow is hopeful for a healthy revival in 2022

<ul><li>As theatres return to 100% occupancy today, MIB issues new guidelines. </li><li>As per the order, cinema halls will have distanced seats, staggered <keyword id="7987860" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="show-timings">show timings</keyword>, and bookings, mandatory social distancing, and encourage digital payments. </li></ul>The <keyword id="832830" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Information-Broadcasting">Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting</keyword> on January 31 released Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cinema halls and theatres on preventive measures to contain the spread of Covid-19. Last week, the government allowed full occupancy in cinema halls and multiplexes starting from February 1. Now that the theatres are returning to normal operations, MIB has issued SOPs, which are as follows: <ul><li>Adequate physical distancing of at least 6 feet to be followed outside the auditoriums, common areas and waiting areas at all times. </li><li>Use of face covers/masks to be made mandatory at all times.</li><li>Availability of hand sanitizers, preferably in the touch-free mode, at entry and exit points as well as common areas within the premises. </li><li>Respiratory etiquettes to be strictly followed. This involves strict practice of covering one’s mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing with a tissue/handkerchief/flexed elbow and disposing off used tissues properly. </li><li>Self-monitoring of health by all and reporting any illness at the earliest to state and district helpline. vi. Spitting shall be strictly prohibited. </li><li>Installation &amp; use of <keyword id="8995298" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="aarogya-setu-app">Aarogya Setu App</keyword> shall be advised to all.</li></ul>Entry &amp; Exit points <ul><li>Thermal screening of visitors/staff is to be carried out at entry points. Only asymptomatic individuals shall be allowed to enter the premises.</li><li>Provisions for hand sanitization should be made available at all entry points and in work areas.</li><li>Designated queue markers shall be made available for entry and exit of the audience from the auditorium and the premises.</li><li>The Exit should be done in a staggered row-wise manner to avoid crowding.</li><li>Sufficient time interval between successive screenings on a single screen as well as on various screens in a multiplex shall be provided to ensure row-wise staggered entry and exit of the audience.</li></ul>Show timings <ul><li>Staggered show timings shall be followed for multiple screens to avoid crowding. </li><li>The show commencement time, intermission period and finish time of a show at any screen shall not overlap with the commencement time, intermission period or finish time of a show at any other screen in a multiplex.</li></ul>Booking and Payments <ul><li>Digital no-contact transactions should be the most preferred mode for issue/verification/payments for tickets, food, and beverages, etc. by using online bookings, use of e-wallets, QR code scanners, etc.</li><li>Contact number shall be taken at the time of booking of tickets to facilitate contact tracing.</li><li>The purchase of tickets at the box office shall be open throughout the day and advance booking shall be allowed to avoid crowding at the sale counters.</li><li>Sufficient number of counters at the box office shall be opened with adequate physical distancing norms, to prevent crowding during physical booking of tickets.</li><li>Floor markers shall be used for physical distancing during queue management at the box office.</li></ul>

Moreover, the Delhi government on July 24 announced a slew of unlocking measures and allowed the cinema halls and theatres, and multiplexes to function with 50% capacity. Shares of Inox Leisure and PVR gained 6% and 1.3% respectively on July 27 at 12:51 p.m. Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) holdings in Inox Leisure have <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/markets/stock-markets/fpis-mfs-increase-stake-in-pvr-inox-leisure/article35546798.ece">reportedly</a> gone up by 8.09% year-on-year to 16.44% as of April-June 2021 from 9.53% in the same quarter last year. Also, mutual funds’ holdings also went up to 23.09% from 19.72% during the same period. Also, a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/amazon-eyes-potential-stake-in-indias-inox-leisure-report/articleshow/84782764.cms">report</a> by Indian Express suggested that Amazon.com India is in talks with several domestic players in film and media distribution including Inox Leisure for a potential stake. It may be looking to expand its content streaming platform Prime Video. Reacting to the report, Inox Leisure released a statement on exchanges saying there are no discussions taking place with Amazon, nor were there any such discussions in the past. It stated the news report was factually incorrect. <div type="image" title="inox stock chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="84785863" hostid="261"></div> A report by Sharekhan Research expects gradual recovery in this space while it said multiplex business is going to be a sustainable model in the long term. “Expect gradual recovery over the next 2-3 quarters as COVID vaccination is catching pace… We believe the multiplex business is going to be a sustainable model in the long term given Indian movie-goers’ strong appetite for the silver screen… We continue to remain positive on the stock, given a net debt-free balance sheet and potential for healthy earnings growth over FY21-FY23,” said a report on Inox Leisure published on April 29. <div type="image" title="PVR stock chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="84785899" hostid="261"></div> Meanwhile, a report by Maybank Kim Eng Securities on PVR dated June 3 said it sees a threat from over the top (OTT) platforms witnessing direct release on their platforms. It hopes big movies will release on box office and not on OTT. “We factored in 67 million footfalls in FY22 estimates, as we expect a weak recovery in footfalls even during second half of FY22 which is contingent upon the government’s vaccination drive and reaching herd immunity, strong content pipeline -- key movies such as ‘Sooryavanshi’, ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘83’ release on box-office and not on OTT,” said the report.
