Maharashtra government, which was so far handling all cases against underworld gangster <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</a>, has now handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the national investigation agency. This has been done keeping in mind CBI’s expertise in handling such cases. 
 
Rajan, who was arrested in Bali, Indonesia on 25th October after the Bali police was tipped off by Australian police, was deported to India yesterday. He would step foot in the country after 27 years, after he fled to Dubai in 1988, facing serious cases like murder, extortion and drug smuggling. 
 
Rajan, who had expressed his desire to be sent to Delhi and not Mumbai, had stated that some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Chhota-Rajan-says-Pakistans-ISI-is-hidingDawood/articleshow/49642843.cms">officers in Mumbai police have contacts with Dawood Ibrahim</a>, Rajan’s arch rival and the most wanted man in India, who is the prime accused in 1993 Bombay bombings, which left over 350 dead and 1200 injured. 
 
If reports are to be believed, Rajan has struck a deal with central security agencies, following which all cases against him would be taken out of Maharashtra Police and that he would be lodged outside the state. These involve almost 70 cases that were registered against Rajan, out of which 20 are for murder, four under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

​Chhota Rajan now over to CBI

<keyword id="6398539" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</keyword>, the Indian underworld gangster caught on 25th October by the Indonesian police in Bali, has hinted at connections that “some officers” in Mumbai Police have with the underworld kingpin Dawood Ibrahim. He also stated that he is not afraid of Ibrahim and would continue his fight against him. It is to be known that Rajan was once a close confidante of Dawood, who is wanted for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, in which more than 350 people lost their lives. 
 
Rajan, who was arrested in Bali, the popular tourist town of Indonesia, on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is expected to be produced before a court soon where the Indonesian police will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India. 
 
He is likely to be deported to India soon. "The entire process is likely to be completed in next two-three days," an Indian official had said yesterday. 
 
"The government can keep me anywhere - Delhi or Mumbai. But there should be no injustice done to me. All cases against me are false," Rajan, who is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking, told reporters when asked whether he was afraid of returning to Mumbai. 
 
"Mumbai police has been unjust to me. Delhi government taking note of that should do justice to me," he said. 
 
An Indian team has been working with its Indonesian counterparts to take over Rajan's custody. 
 
The Indian team, comprising officers from CBI, Mumbai and Delhi police, arrived here on Sunday and they came along with a detailed dossier on 55-year-old Rajan and his involvement in various crimes in India. 
 
The team for the first time questioned him yesterday in the presence of Indonesian police at the detention centre where he has been lodged for the last 10 days. 
 
First Secretary (consular) in the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, Sanjeev Kumar Agrawal, who met Rajan for nearly half an hour on Sunday, was also present when the Indian team examined Rajan. 
 
While being taken out of the detention centre, Rajan had said that Dawood is currently hiding in Pakistan under the direct patronage of ISI. 
 
"ISI chhupa rahi hai (ISI is hiding him)," he said. 
 
Mumbai Police has registered 20 murder cases against Rajan, four cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. Delhi Police has got six cases against him. 
 
Rajan, whose original name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, was arrested in Bali on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the police in Indonesia. 
 
In 2000, there was an attempt on Rajan's life when Dawood's men tracked him down to a hotel in Bangkok but he managed a dramatic escape. 
 
In the absence of an extradition treaty, the Indian authorities have already provided documents to their Indonesian counterparts about his Indian identity to facilitate his deportation.

He has also been linked to multiple other crimes, including murder, extortion and drug trafficking. Here’s a brief history of Rajan’s life, his eventual arrest and recent conviction. They said agencies are working on more than one plan to bring back 55-year-old Rajan. 
 
Rajan was travelling with the identity of Mohan Kumar with passport number G9273860 when he was apprehended at the airport in Bali, after arriving there on a Garuda Indonesia flight GA715, by the Indonesian Police on a tip off from Australian authorities.

Fugitive <keyword id="6398539" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</keyword>, wanted over a series of murders in India, has been arrested in Indonesia by <keyword id="977736" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bali-Police">Bali Police</keyword> after decades on the run. 
 Home Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> and the Central Bureau of Investigation (<keyword id="6354572" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CBI">CBI</keyword>) confirmed the arrest of the <keyword id="26778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="underworld">underworld</keyword> don in Indonesia. 
 According to an official statement by the probe agency, at the request of CBI (<keyword id="6355520" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Interpol">interpol</keyword>) India, the Bali Police has arrested an Indian national - Mohan Kumar on October 25. Mohan Kumar alias Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan is a fugitive and the CBI has been pursuing the matter with Australian authorities. 
 
Acting on a tip-off from the Australian Police, Indonesian authorities detained Chhota Rajan on Sunday after he arrived in a resort island of Bali from Sydney. 
 
The 55-year-old Nikalje, an alleged crime boss in India, had been on the run for two decades, Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto told AFP with Interpol flagging him as a wanted man back in 1995. 
 
He said the department received information from police in Canberra on Sunday about the red notice for a murderer. 
 
"We arrested the man at the airport. What we know is that this man was suspected to have carried out 15 to 20 murders in India." 
 
A spokesperson for Australian Federal Police said Interpol in Canberra had alerted Indonesian authorities "who apprehended Nikalje at the request of Indian authorities". 
 
The federal police confirmed last month that Nikalje was living in Australia under another identity and had been in discussions with Indian authorities, the spokesperson said, but would not provide further details.

One of India's most wanted gangsters has finally been captured after 20 years on the run

<ul><li>It took the country seven years to reach the verdict. </li><li>Eight other accused were also given the life sentence for the crime. </li><li>Accused also fined ₹22.3 million.</li></ul> On Wednesday, a special court in India, called the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), found the nine accused in the murder of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/j-dey-verdict-all-you-need-to-know/articleshow/63997333.cms">journalist J-Dey</a>, including <keyword id="6355561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajan">Rajan</keyword>, Rohit Tangappa, Arun Dake, Anil Waghmode, Magesh Aagavane, Sachin Gaikwad, Abhijeet Shinde and <keyword id="5380025" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nilesh-Shedge">Nilesh Shedge</keyword>, guilty of conspiracy, murder, and committing murder. Chhota Rajan is a Mumbai-born gangster with ties to <keyword id="42945" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dawood">Dawood</keyword> Ibrahim and <keyword id="137255" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Gawli">Arun Gawli</keyword>. He, with Dawood and Gawli, ruled the Indian underworld in the 1980s. The other eight accused provided assistance to carry out the hit that was ordered by Rajan. For instance, Tangappa was the sharpshooter accompanied by Arun, Anil and Mangesh carried out the hit, while Sachil kept a watch on <keyword id="6715" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dey">Dey</keyword>. Abhijeet, Nilesh and Deepak were all involved in the procurement of the murder weapon and its disposal. The verdict finally came for <keyword id="676000" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jyotirmoy-Dey">Jyotirmoy Dey</keyword>’s case, who is also known as J-Dey, on May 3rd. The veteran journalist, crime and investigations editor for Indian daily Mid Day was an expert on the Mumbai underworld. He was shot at by a motorcycle-borne sharpshooter in 2011. Chhota Rajan ordered the hit because he was upset with the journalist’s reports about him. The court fined the convicted a total of ₹22.3 million. Of this, ₹500,000 was to be paid to Dey’s sister Lina Dey. Cartridge supplier Deepak Sisodia was fined ₹15,00,000, while the other accused were ordered to pay ₹26,00,000 each. Another accused, Jigna Vora, who had spent almost ten months in jail, broke down when she was acquitted, says a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/chhota-rajan-8-others-get-life-for-cold-blooded-murder-of-j-dey/articleshow/64008097.cms?from=mdr">report</a>. Paulson Joseph, who supplied a SIM card and money required for the hit, was also acquitted. The defendant's lawyers submitted mitigating circumstances like the age, family conditions and financial circumstances of the accused in order to seek leniency in the ruling. The prosecution, according to a <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/j-dey-murder-case-verdict-chhota-rajan-guilty-jigna-vora-acquitted-punishment-today-who-was-jyotirmoy-dey-top-developments-118050200703_1.html">report</a>, argued that the court must send out ‘a strong message’ while sentencing the accused.

Former Union home secretary RK Singh’s disclosure about aborting the plan to take out fugitive underworld don and mastermind of Mumbai serial blasts <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/DawoodIbrahim-his-Money-and-Lifestyle/articleshow/48655004.cms">Dawood Ibrahim</a> throws fresh spotlight on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-Indian-Govt-has-no-clue-about-Dawood-its-most-wanted-criminals-whereabouts/articleshow/47162037.cms">Dawood's links with sections of Mumbai cops</a>.
 Singh said the plan, prepared by national security advisor A K Doval when he headed the <keyword id="6364687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Intelligence-Bureau">Intelligence Bureau</keyword> under the Vajpayee government, involved using members of the rival underworld gang led by <keyword id="6398539" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</keyword> to target Dawood when he was set to travel to Dubai for the wedding of his daughter in 2005. However, the plot was disrupted by a posse of Mumbai cops who mysteriously emerged in Delhi to arrest Rajan's accomplice <keyword id="208531" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vicky-Malhotra">Vicky Malhotra</keyword> and <keyword id="328738" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fareed-Tanasha">Fareed Tanasha</keyword>. 

	Malhotra and Tanasha had travelled to Delhi to work out details of the plan.
 

	It has rekindled suspicions about the manner in which Mumbai cops landed in New Delhi to enlist the help of Delhi Police ostensibly to execute arrest warrants pending against members of Chhota Rajan gang. 
 

	The claim is significant also because of the timing: it comes at a time when evidence has emerged that Doval's interest in the leader of the notorious crime syndicate may not have waned even after a decade he spent outside the government following his superannuation. 
 

	Last week, Indian agencies responded to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Pakistan-does-it-again-Questions-veracity-of-Indias-dossiers-on-Dawood/articleshow/47187565.cms">claims of Pakistani officials</a> here that they had got dossiers showing complicity of Indian agencies in Baluchistan insurgency by releasing a fresh photograph of the ageing don. So far, Indian agencies have used an old photograph - one which was taken in 1993 - in all the dossiers submitted to Pakistan to claim that the fugitive was being sheltered by the hostile neighbour, and to demand his return. The image of the ageing don with a receding hairline showed that Indian agencies have been tracking him with considerable success.

 "This is a festival gift. Traditionally, during the festive season, the auto industry witnesses sales growth of 15-20%, which was missed in the last couple of years. This reduction in rate by the RBI has assured that the growth will be achieved," said <keyword id="103788" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India-Ltd">Hyundai Motor India Ltd</keyword> (HMIL) Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales) Rakesh Srivastava. 
 
The reduction in interest rates will reduce cost of ownership and help the automakers get more customers. Automakers generally expect higher sales during the months of October and November when Durga Puja, Diwali and other festivals are celebrated. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maruti+suzuki">Maruti Suzuki India</a> Executive Director Marketing and Sales R S Kalsi also echoed the same sentiments. 
 
“The market so far has been moving very slowly but with this (rate cut) sentiments will improve. It gives the much-needed boost to the market in the pre-festive season,” said Kalsi. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hero+motocorp">Hero MotoCorp Chairman and MD Pawan Munjal</a> also lauded the rate cut and said it came at an opportune time as it will help in raising customer sentiment during the festival season. 
 
The RBI cut its policy rate from 7.25% to 6.75% -- the lowest in four-and-half years.

"I don't think he is fit for the country. His decision to increase interest rates to reduce inflation and stabilise the economy has backfired and badly affected the nation. All the industries have collapsed and as a result unemployment has increased," Swamy had said, adding that Rajan should be sent back to Chicago at the earliest. 
 Swamy even wrote to the Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> asking for the immediate sacking of the <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword> Governor, alleging that is ‘mentally not fully Indian’ and has wrecked the economy. 
 
His comments naturally caused a lot of debate and speculations are rife on whether Rajan will be given a second term after his first term comes to an end on September.
