In order to control traffic and resulting pollution, the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> (<keyword id="68804" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="CPCB">CPCB</keyword>) has directed governments of Delhi-NCR cities to consider introducing flexible office timings, so that peak-hour traffic can be reduced. 
 
The Centre has informed about CPCB's directions before the Supreme Court, to a bench headed by CJI TS Thakur. 
 
The motive behind this step is to ensure that the SC knows about the anti-pollution measures that the centre is taking, so that it can reconsider the ban and tax imposed in Delhi-NCR on diesel cars of engine capacity of more than 2000 cc. 
 
Coming back to the proposal, the CPCB is of the opinion that flexible office hours will contribute a lot in the reduction of peak-time traffic to and from Delhi-NCR destinations, especially considering the number of people travelling to and from Noida and Gurgaon. This results in regular morning and evening snail-like traffic on roads connecting Delhi to other NCR cities. 
 
Talking of Gurgaon, the road connecting Delhi and Gurgaon also leads to the Delhi Airport, which results in further traffic and delays. 
 
While the governments are yet to decide on flexi office timings, other measures include adding particulate filters to diesel vehicles, introducing early alarm system for probable traffic congestions, route diversion, decongesting pathways, prevention of parking on roadsides and non-designated spaces and impounding of visibly polluting vehicles, as reported by <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/have-flexible-office-timings-to-reduce-peak-traffic-central-pollution-control-board/articleshow/53109485.cms">ET</a>. 
 
Other than this, CPCB has set a 30-day deadline, by when state governments will need to start synchronising traffic lights, install vapour recovery system in fuel stations, introduce mechanised vacuum sweeping of roads, and close unauthorised brick kilns.

The factory was closed down on March 1st, for failing to comply with orders to install an online effluent and emission monitoring system. Once the norms are fulfilled, it would resume operations. Even though the machines and the factory are shut, workers are manually testing opium, which takes two to three months for one batch of opium. Ghazipur Opium factory, country's biggest and oldest, shuts down

<keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> has offered its expertise for the <keyword id="6357202" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ganga">Ganga</keyword> clean-up mission by bringing in the experience of cleaning the <keyword id="1354414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rhine-river">Rhine river</keyword> in the European country. 
 
"Rejuvenation and cleaning of the river Ganga is one of the top priorities of Indian government. We are now just in the phase where we are going to see how we are going to assist the Indian government in this important endeavour," Heiko Warnken, head of Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany, said. 
 
"We will soon have a mission who will be coming to India with experts from Germany. We have also cleaned the river Rhine in Germany. We will see how we can assist in the Ganga mission," Warnken said. 
 As per a <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> report, around Rs 20,000 crore has been spent by the government on various cleaning projects for the Ganga. However, the impact was negligible.

Germany Offers Help For Ganga Clean-up Mission

A report by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> (CPCB) has found that the air quality of holy city Varanasi is most polluted among the 42 cities monitored recently. Following this, the Director of IIT Kanpur, Manindra Agarwal told the media that the state government has asked the civil aviation ministry for its approval regarding artificial rains since the area where artificial rains are required need cloud cover. IIT Kanpur was given a grant of Rs 15 lakh from the state government to experiment on the option of artificial rains. The scientists have finished their experiments and are ready to execute. The UP residents therefore will soon see airplanes flying over Lucknow to create artificial rains to bring down the pollution levels. IIT-K has even agreed to modify its six-seater Cessna aircraft to load it with salt for being dropped on the high altitude 'supercooled' clouds. “The measure will definitely reduce air pollution levels. Aerospace, civil engineering and industrial management engineering departments are working on this project,” said Agarwal. How far will this help bring the pollution levels down in Uttar Pradesh, and the rest of the country is being questioned by human rights organisations across India.
