Maruti Suzuki Q4 net profit rises 47.8% to ₹3,877.8 crore

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The roads are perilous for NYC's app-based delivery drivers on e-bikes and other micro-mobility vehicles.</li><li>NYC infrastructure lags, with few protected bike lanes or designated moped and e-bike lanes.</li></ul><p>If you've ordered takeout recently in New York City, chances are your food was whisked to your front door by a delivery driver on an electric bicycle or moped.</p><p>But what you likely didn't consider when you made your order was that the person hand-delivering your dinner may have risked their life to get it to you.</p><p>New York City delivery workers who don't use cars have one of the deadliest jobs in the city. There are now more than 65,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers in the city, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/05/business/delivery-workers-new-york-bathrooms-ebikes/index.html">about 80%</a> of them use e-bikes and motorbikes.</p><p>The fatality rate for these workers was at least 36 per 100,000 between January 2021 and June 2022, the city Department of Consumer and Worker Protection <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/workers/Delivery-Worker-Study-November-2022.pdf">reported</a>. That's more than 5 times the fatality rate for construction workers in New York City, which was seven per 100,000 in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/iif/state-data/fatal-occupational-injuries-in-new-york-city-2020.htm">according to</a> the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most driver deaths are a result of traffic crashes, though workers are also subject to a high rate of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/09/nyregion/delivery-workers-robberies-nyc.html">violent robbery</a>.</p><p>App-based delivery drivers are also being severely injured at extremely high rates. The city report found that 28.7% of e-bike or moped delivery workers experienced injuries that forced them to miss work, lose consciousness, or seek medical care. Complicating matters, delivery drivers are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/workers/Delivery-Worker-Public-Hearing-Written-Testimony-061522.pdf">disproportionately immigrants,</a> and many are living in the country illegally, so they avoid reporting these crimes to the police or seeking medical care for fear of deportation.</p><p>According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, transportation and material-moving jobs have the second-highest fatality rates nationwide after farming, fishing, and forestry.</p><h2 id="61e96346-a699-43db-ba1b-0176a2336762"><strong>Inadequate infrastructure</strong></h2><p>The increase in bicycles and electric-powered non-car vehicles on the streets is a huge win for the climate and for street safety in general — more efficient, greener transportation and fewer cars and delivery trucks on the roads is a good thing.</p><p>But New York City's infrastructure is way behind. The roads are designed to move cars and trucks as quickly as possible, with little accountability for dangerous driving and very little protected space for anyone getting around by bike or scooter. Just 3% of the city's roads have protected bike lanes, and just 1% of intersections have red light cameras, Bloomberg recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-03-11/new-york-city-s-decade-long-battle-for-pedestrian-safety">reported</a>.</p><p>Delivery drivers aren't the only New Yorkers at high risk of being killed in a traffic accident. Bicycle deaths, overall, hit a 24-year high in 2023. Most of the 30 cyclists who were killed in crashes last year died in collisions with automobiles — mostly trucks or SUVs — on streets without bike lanes, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/05/nyregion/nyc-cyclist-deaths-ebike.html">a New York Times analysis</a>.</p><p>Without sufficient safe infrastructure, cyclists — and all kinds of non-car drivers — opt for sidewalks, where they can disrupt pedestrians, or dangerous roads where they're <a target="_blank" href="https://abc7ny.com/food-deliveryman-killed-cyclist-sunset-park-new-york-city/5001979/">no match for cars</a> and trucks.</p><p>The surge in delivery drivers on e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and motorbikes has created some safety and quality-of-life issues for everyone else on the street as well.</p><p>In January, New York Mayor Eric Adams <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-24/nyc-launches-city-office-to-regulate-e-bike-delivery-boom">announced the creation</a> of a new department of sustainable delivery tasked with regulating commercial delivery services that use bikes and other micro-mobility vehicles.</p><p>The city's Department of Transportation insists it's taking seriously street safety for delivery workers and others using multi-modal transportation. A spokesperson for the department told Business Insider that it built more protected bike lanes last year — 32 miles of them —  than all other major US cities combined.</p><p>But that falls far short of the <a target="_blank" href="https://projects.transalt.org/bikelanes">50 miles of protected lanes</a> it aimed to build last year. The department also noted it's working to expand certain well-used bike lanes and the number of bus-mounted cameras that ticket drivers that block bike and bus lanes.</p><div type="image" title="A memorial ghost bike stands in memory of Jose Alvarado, a delivery worker killed by a hit-and-run driver in the South Bronx." height="851" width="1280" msid="110701998" hostid="261" sizebytes="259308"></div><p>Advocates for safer streets say the city needs to do much more to build better infrastructure. They're asking for wider protected bike lanes, or even separate lanes for e-bikes and mopeds, and charging facilities for e-bikes.</p><p>"The City is going backwards on street safety. The number of fatalities and injuries will only continue to rise unless the City matches the huge surge in e-bikes and mopeds with infrastructure improvements, dedicated e-bike lanes, investments in slow and shared streets, and accountability from food delivery companies," New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said in a statement to Business Insider.</p><h2 id="de5185f6-21dd-4bd9-a400-d90aff2f80bd">Little accountability</h2><p>App-based delivery workers' status as gig workers — contractors rather than employees — is central to their plight. Food delivery companies — including giants like Uber Eats, Grubhub, and DoorDash — don't have to provide them with benefits, including health insurance.</p><p>And they didn't have to provide them with minimum pay until last year when the city implemented <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/nyc-delivery-workers-minimum-wage-app-45d1fe3a184bc1a49acef647d6cb5758">a minimum wage</a> for app-based restaurant delivery drivers. In April, the mayor announced the hourly wage would be bumped to $19.56 per hour, before tips — a big improvement on the average of $5.39 per hour that workers made before the law went into effect.</p><p>Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the worker advocacy group the Workers Justice Project, blames food delivery companies for creating unsafe working conditions by incentivizing workers to deliver as many orders as they can as quickly as possible, and to work late at night, during storms, and in other risky conditions. Advocates for delivery workers hope minimum pay will lessen these incentives.</p><p>"The number one reason we have been advocating for fair pay in the app delivery industry is because having dignified pay actually translates into safety on the streets," Guallpa, who was <a target="_blank" href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/new-york-inside-power-list.html">a driving force</a> behind the creation of minimum pay for app workers, told Business Insider. "Minimum pay really means that you can actually drive safely when you're riding to make that delivery."</p><p>A spokesperson for DoorDash said the company offers all drivers occupational accident insurance, and has a trust and safety team available to support drivers around the clock. Uber similarly insisted the company is "deeply committed to building innovative features, promoting safe behavior on the road, and working with safety experts to raise the bar on safety," according to a spokesperson.</p><p>Guallpa's group wants to see a slew of other changes to improve worker safety, including boosting worker protections and investments in infrastructure like bike lanes and bike parking, better education for workers and connections to city resources, and stronger enforcement of the employers' obligations.</p><p>Lander and Guallpa also want the companies to help their joint effort to create "Deliverista hubs" — storefronts and converted newsstands where workers can take breaks, charge their bikes, get training, and be connected with city resources like health insurance. Three hubs are in the works — one near City Hall in lower Manhattan, one on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and one in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Guallpa said.</p><p>Keeping delivery workers safe should be a public priority, Guallpa said. Indeed, "New Yorkers are dependent on app delivery workers to keep them safe and fed during times of crisis," she added.</p><p><em>Are you a delivery driver who uses an e-bike or moped? The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), however, is yet to issue clarifications on the matter. With <keyword id="6514325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-theft" source="Orion">vehicle theft</keyword> a serious issue in India, it’s important to know all the rules around vehicle theft claims, so that your claim is not rejected. <br /><br />A comprehensive insurance policy offers protection against vehicle theft, but the insured needs to be completely aware of the claim process. <br /><br />“The first step after your vehicle is stolen is to file a police report [FIR]. This report will provide important details about the theft, such as the date, time, location, and a description of the parking details and last usage details of the stolen vehicle,” says TA Ramalingam, chief technical officer, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance. <br /><br /><strong>Notify the insurance company immediately<br /></strong><br />In case of vehicle theft, time is of the essence. “It is recommended that the insurer is immediately notified on the discovery of the vehicle theft, and the claim should also be filed without delay, as any delay in filing the claim can potentially affect the processing and settlement of the claim,” says Parthanil Ghosh, president, retail business, HDFC ERGO General Insurance.<br /><br />The specific time limit for filing a claim for vehicle theft may vary depending on the terms and conditions of the insurer. Your insurer will furnish you with a claims form that will help you through the process of filing the claim. Your insurance company will probably require some supporting documentation to substantiate your claim. This could involve submitting the police first information report (FIR), the original registration certificate (RC), all original keys, and any other pertinent records to your insurance provider.<br /><br />Agrees Yagnesh Dosshi, co-founder and director, Raghnall Insurance Broking and Risk Management. “Once the FIR is filed, the policyholder needs to report the theft to the insurance company immediately and initiate a claim request as soon as possible, ideally within 24-48 hours of the theft.” <br /><br /><strong>Why your vehicle theft claim may rejected<br /></strong><br />An insurance company may deny a claim for vehicle theft under certain circumstances. It is important for the policyholder to report the theft to her insurance provider as soon as possible, as any delay in reporting may result in the denial of the claim.<br /><br />Providing incorrect or misleading information to the insurer or granting someone else permission to use the vehicle at the time of the theft can also lead to rejection of the claim. Additionally, if the policyholder's insurance policy was inactive at the time of the theft, the claim may be denied by the insurer. <br /><br />“Also, if the insurance company has reason to suspect that the policyholder was involved in the theft of their own vehicle, they may reject the claim, which is called a breach of trust and is against the principle of utmost good faith in insurance,” says Ramalingam. <br /><br /><strong>How much compensation are you entitled to?<br /></strong><br />In the event that a claim for vehicle theft is approved, the amount of compensation you receive will be determined by the terms and conditions of your insurance policy as well as the insured declared value (IDV) of the stolen vehicle. The IDV is the amount that you had declared as the vehicle's value when you purchased the insurance policy, and it serves as the maximum amount that your insurer will pay out in the event of a total loss or theft. <br /><br />“In case the vehicle has been purchased with a bank loan then the insurer will reimburse the payout amount to the bank,” says Ghosh. <br /><br />If the stolen vehicle is found, the insurance company will compensate for any damages that occurred to the vehicle during the theft.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I've driven more than 20 different electric vehicles. </li><li>I've enjoyed most of them, but I'd steer clear of three particular EVs if I was ready to buy. </li></ul><p>In the course of testing 24 electric vehicles over the last couple of years, I've gotten behind the wheel of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-electric-cars-rivian-r1s-hyundai-ioniq-5-porsche-taycan-2022-12">some true gems</a> — vehicles that I'd buy in a heartbeat if given the chance. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-turbo-s-cross-turismo-electric-car-review-2022-6">badass, $200,000 Porsche station wagon</a> that zips to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds? Yes please. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rivian-r1s-electric-suv-photos-review-range-tesla-2022-7">luxurious, four-wheel-drive SUV from Rivian</a> that eats off-road trails for breakfast? Sign me up. </p><p>While my experiences have overall been positive, three vehicles stand out as ones I'd steer clear of. I'm not saying nobody should buy these cars — by all means, have at it. But for my personal tastes and needs, their downsides outweigh their benefits. </p><h2><strong>ElectraMeccanica Solo</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="817" width="1090" msid="98065768" hostid="261"></div><p>Scratch that — maybe I've only driven 23.5 electric cars, given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrameccanica-solo-ev-review-drive-electric-vehicle-three-wheels-2022-4">the ElectraMeccanica Solo's</a> inclusion on this list. </p><p>The single-seat, three-wheeler challenges the American desire for bigger and bigger vehicles, which I think is great. Surely, many are taking up more space and spewing more emissions than they need to. </p><div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="2033" width="2500" msid="98065771" hostid="261"></div><p>The Solo seems like a cheat code for getting around some cities. The Solo and its 100 miles of claimed range don't quite fit the bill. Plus, during my 20-minute test drive in downtown Manhattan, I felt dangerously exposed and invisible among all the tall SUVs and trucks. </p><h2><strong>GMC Hummer EV</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1." height="1875" width="2500" msid="98065776" hostid="261"></div><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-review-price-electric-pickup-truck-2022-11">new $113,000 Hummer pickup's</a> sheer enormity and excessiveness makes it fun to tool around in for a weekend. It feels like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hummer-ev-photos-electric-pickup-truck-review-gmc-edition-1-2022-11">a ridiculously huge and expensive toy</a>. </p><p>But it's much, much more vehicle than I (or most people) need. Although its rear-wheel steering helps maneuverability, its many blind spots and tank-sized footprint make city driving nerve-racking. Even when you get out on the highway, the Hummer feels unsettlingly large. More than once, I peered down at a puny sedan passing me and wondered how long it had been cruising in my blind spot.</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1." height="1667" width="2500" msid="98065779" hostid="261"></div><p>It's also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-efficiency-weight-electric-vehicles-pickup-trucks-2022-12">the least efficient EV on the market</a>, which kind of defeats the purpose of ditching gasoline in the first place. Other electric pickups out there — the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning — are more sensibly sized, less in-your-face, and just as functional. </p><h2><strong>Nissan Leaf</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Nissan Leaf." height="1595" width="2126" msid="98065782" hostid="261"></div><p>The Nissan Leaf is one of the OGs of the EV world. Although it was a pioneer when it first launched more than a decade ago and remains one of the most <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-cars-affordable-toyota-chevy-hyundai-kia-nissan-tesla-2023-1">budget-friendly EVs you can buy</a>, it can't beat modern offerings. </p><p>The base, $27,800 Leaf is EPA-rated for only 149 miles of range, significantly less than other options and not enough for confident road-tripping. The $43,000 Tesla Model 3 delivers 272 miles of range, while the $26,500 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-bolt-euv-cheap-electric-car-suv-price-2022-12">Chevrolet Bolt EV</a> rates at 259 miles. The pricier Leaf SV Plus still comes in at only 215 miles. </p><div type="image" title="2023 Nissan Leaf" height="3314" width="4419" msid="98065785" hostid="261"></div><p>Plus, the Leaf <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-car-ev-nissan-leaf-review-pros-cons-2022-3">uses a different fast-charging port</a> than the rest of the industry, limiting the stations where it can be refueled. Given the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-chargers-infrastructure-adoption-automakers-drivers-startup-2022-11">sorry state of EV-charging infrastructure today</a>, I'd prefer to have access to all the plugs possible. </p><p>Still, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-leaf-revew-cheapest-affordable-electric-car-in-us-2021-10">Leaf is a solid, low-cost choice</a> for someone who doesn't need to drive all that far and can charge primarily at home. </p>

Frankly, cars scare me, and getting behind the wheel is a responsibility I still can't confidently accept.</p><p>Luckily, I live in NYC, where a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/car-free-arizona-neighborhood-designed-to-combat-summer-heat-culdesac-2024-5">car-free lifestyle</a> is attainable. There are plenty of ways to get around without a license, from efficient public transportation systems to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-south-carolina-island-no-cars-2023-8">walkable neighborhoods</a> and ride-share apps.</p><p>But I don't want to live in the Big Apple forever. For years, I've dreaded learning to drive before eventually <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-moved-from-knoxville-to-nyc-happier-despite-higher-costs-2024-3">moving elsewhere in the US</a>.</p><p>The anxiety ate away at me until a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scottsdale-arizona-millionaires-moving-what-its-like-photos-2024-4">trip to Arizona</a>, where I visited a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/culdesac-arizona-neighborhood-with-no-cars-tour-photos-2024-5">car-free neighborhood</a> in Tempe called Culdesac.</p><h2 id="d1eac057-5df2-4f97-a4bd-766a7bbb8fe7">A walkable neighborhood in a city suburb</h2><div type="image" title="Culdesac Tempe: An alleyway lined with white buildings with red trimmings" height="1875" width="2500" msid="110976898" hostid="261" sizebytes="292842"></div><p>Culdesac opened in 2023 and currently has 172 units and 200 residents, a company representative told Business Insider.</p><p>The 17-acre block 10 miles from Phoenix has shaded courtyards, apartments, a restaurant, and amenities, including a two-story fitness center, oversize games, and a weekly night market with vendors.</p><p>Culdesac also has 11 micro-retailers on-site, including a market, a laundromat, a medical spa, an art studio, a plant shop, and a thrift store.</p><div type="image" title="Culdesac, Tempe: A red, brick courtyard with a map in the middle and jumbo Connect Four and shaded tables on the left" height="1875" width="2500" msid="110976891" hostid="261" sizebytes="491150"></div><h2 id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">Getting around without a car</h2><p id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">Culdesac has visitor parking, but residents are not allowed to park a car within 0.25 miles of the block.</p><p id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">Some residents, like Culdesac CEO and cofounder Ryan Johnson, don't even own a car.</p><p id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">Others, like 24-year-old Brad Biehl, who moved in earlier this year, park their vehicles elsewhere in Tempe.</p><p id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">"It's a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/road-trip-packing-list-tips-for-smooth-ride-2023-6">road trip</a> machine because I never use it to get around town," Biehl said of his car. Another Culdesac resident previously told BI that this can make <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-culdesac-car-free-tempe-arizona-oasis-pros-cons-2024-3">living without a car</a> difficult.</p><p id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">But Culdesac makes navigating streets built for cars a little easier. Residents get a mobility package worth almost $3,000 a year, including a Valley Metro pass for public transportation and discounted rides with apps like Lyft and the self-driving taxi service <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/waymo-self-driving-robotaxi-cars-without-drivers-amazing-tech-review-2024-4"><u>Waymo</u></a><u>,</u> <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://culdesac.com/blog/post/what-does-it-mean-to-be-car-free"><u>according to the company's website</u></a>.</p><p id="1f1a0f28-c725-4d76-bd8c-3cd940b0049f">Culdesac has a stop on the Valley Metro's light-rail system that connects Phoenix, Mesa, and Tempe. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Mackinac Island is in Lake Huron in Michigan and it feels like it's part of a fairy-tale.</li><li>The island has no cars and is filled with historic structures, sweet shops, and pretty cottages.</li></ul><p>On Wednesday, USA Today announced its <a href="https://10best.usatoday.com/awards/travel/best-summer-travel-destination-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">No.1 Best Summer Travel Destination</a> as part of its 10Best Readers' Choice awards for 2024. Topping the list is one of the most beautiful islands in the Midwest: Mackinac Island.</p><p>Mackinac Island — pronounced "mack-in-awe" — sits in Lake Huron, directly between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas. </p><p>To get to the island, you <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ways-wasting-money-on-plane-tickets-common-mistakes-2021-6">fly into the small airport</a>, or take a ferry from Mackinaw City and get dropped off downtown. From there, you can walk on foot, rent a bike, or take a horse-and-carriage "taxi."</p><p>Mackinac only has about 500 <a href="https://www.mackinacisland.org/blog/10-%C2%BD-mackinac-island-fun-facts/">year-round residents</a>, and over <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2020/06/17/mackinac-island-looks-reopen-right-way-season-truly-begin/3202531001/">1 million people visit each year</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The return to in-person office life could fuel changes in transportation and energy consumption.</li><li>How those changes might reflect corporate roles in the <keyword id="1484485" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-crisis">climate crisis</keyword> remains to be determined.</li><li>Jan Freitag, a market-analytics expert, says an accurate assessment can be made around Labor Day.</li></ul><p>With more people getting vaccinated in the US, discussions about employees <a href="https://fortune.com/2021/04/14/covid-return-to-work-back-to-the-office-wfh-end-of-work-from-home-recovery/">physically returning to offices</a> (whether full time or in a hybrid of remote and in-person work) are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/05/business/office-workers-return-dates.html">well underway</a>. Signs of getting back to traditional office life raise the question: How might transportation and energy usage be affected?</p><p>Before COVID-19, Americans spent an average of <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/22/study-states-with-the-longest-and-shortest-commutes.html">200 hours a year</a> commuting to work. And although most of the country went into lockdown last year, causing people to ditch their regular commutes, demand for <a href="https://www.iea.org/commentaries/growing-preference-for-suvs-challenges-emissions-reductions-in-passenger-car-market">larger vehicles</a> continued to grow, in part because of consumer perceptions about <a href="https://www.motorbiscuit.com/why-are-suvs-more-popular-than-sedans/">safety and greater cargo capacity</a>. The International Energy Agency's <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/tracking-transport-2020">2020 report</a> said that "transportation is still responsible for 24% of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion." </p><p>Traditional corporate travel for in-person meetings, conferences, and events has also been a massive source of annual CO2 emissions. For example, in 2019, Salesforce staff traveled enough to generate <a href="https://www.salesforce.com/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2020/08/sustainability-FY20-stakeholder-impact-report.pdf">146,000 metric tons</a> of CO2, equivalent to the output of 17,500 homes in a year.</p><p><a href="https://str.com/team/jan-freitag">Jan Freitag</a>, the national director of hospitality market analytics at <a href="https://www.costargroup.com/">CoStar Group</a>, said it's too early to tell if work-related expeditions will drastically increase this year. "After Labor Day, we expect a clear demarcated line in the sand about whether people will return to the office or not, restart business travel, as well as whether group travel will happen," Freitag said.</p><p>The Labor Day benchmark is used in relation to the beginning of the school year when parents and children will return to the drop-off, pickup schedule. "That drives employers to say, 'You're back to where you were because your kids are back to school, so let's go back to normal where you <keyword id="6438468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="commute">commute</keyword> to work,'" Freitag said.</p><p>Purchase trends showed that regardless of commute changes, the pandemic hasn't deterred Americans from hitting the road. Not only did electric-bike sales <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/02/travel/ebikes-bike-sharing-us.html">grow by 145%</a> between 2019 and 2020, but this past April, <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/monthly-car-sales-can-keep-going-strong-so-can-car-stocks-51622662086">18.5 million</a> light vehicles were sold - the highest number since 2005 - and electric-car sales saw a 249% increase compared to the same period last year.</p><p>One report predicted that electric-car sales will grow significantly in 2022 because of greater affordability and <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4432397-ev-company-news-for-the-month-of-may-2021">price parity</a> with nonelectric vehicles. The sustainable effects of these trends may depend largely on subsidies and infrastructure investments, such as additional bike lanes, EV charging stations, and parking spaces at office complexes. </p><p>Regarding energy usage, as more people return to the office, the biggest difference may pertain to air-conditioning. Out of all commercial buildings, offices consume the most cooling energy. And that's expected to intensify, as a recent report from the US Energy Information Administration predicted that energy consumption for air-conditioning will <a href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=47736">rise by 29% between 2020 and 2050</a> because of expectations of warmer temperatures.</p><p>Hopefully, companies will focus on sustainable business operations, including preferable work arrangements for employees, that lead to responsible corporate influence on transportation and energy usage. Otherwise, they'll risk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-job-flexible-remote-working-from-home-return-to-office-2021-6">significant talent drain</a>.</p>
