<p>The Metropolitan <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Authority (MTA) is warning New Yorkers to keep an eye out for hidden cameras installed in MetroCard vending machines that can steal their credit card info.</p>
<p>A hidden camera and a skimming device were found and removed by a customer earlier this week in a vending machine at the 59 St-Columbus Circle station. It's impressive that anyone spotted the camera, which was built into a plug adapter and attached to the top of the machine:</p>

<p>The MTA has detected these devices before, on machines that sell Metro North tickets at well as MetroCards. It recommends customers sign up for an EasyPay MetroCard, which is linked to a credit card and refills automatically as it's used, so they don't have to use vending machines.</p>

No debit cards means no card skimming - when someone puts a fake card reader over an ATM's real card reader - which <a href="http://krebsonsecurity.com/all-about-skimmers/">accounts for over 80% of ATM fraud</a>.</p><p>No debit cards also means no screen or touchpad on the ATM.</p><p>Rather, the customer would log in to their bank's mobile app and select how much money they want to withdraw. Citigroup is testing a futuristic ATM machine that scans your eye before dispensing cash

Now, no more forgetting that debit/credit card at the teller machine or checking twice and thrice before leaving a shopping mall in case we left the card at the billing counters! Here’s introducing the contactless debit and credit cards that come with a fraud cover of Rs 1 lakh, by the State Bank of India.<br />
<br /> The <keyword id="2581731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="contactless-cards">contactless cards</keyword> uses near field technology (NFC) that enables users to make payments by waiving or tapping the card near the contactless reader instead of swiping or dipping it. <br />

"The NFC technology makes the contactless cards very secure as the card never leaves your hand thereby reducing the <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/definition/risk" target="_blank">risk</a> of card loss and fraud. The customers can tap or wave the card at the POS machine enter the pin and complete the transaction to pay at busy locations," said bank said in a statement to media.<br />

To add to its merits, the card will come with emergency replacement facility anywhere in the world.<br />

"We will tie-up with campus, hospitals and corporate for card," said <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/SBI" target="_blank">SBI</a> chairman <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Arundhati-Bhattacharya" target="_blank">Arundhati Bhattacharya</a> speaking to media while launching sbiINTOUCH card at Starbucks, as per a report in the Economic Times. She was optimistic that once RBI gets comfortable with NFC technology it would increase the minimum limit from Rs 2,000. The bank has tied up with Shoppers Stop, Reliance Retail, <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Big-Bazaar" target="_blank">Big Bazaar</a> and Starbucks.<br />
<br /> The country's largest bank, <keyword id="13222" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword>, will upgrade all its existing 2.20 lakh point of sale (PoS) machines to <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/NFC" target="_blank">NFC</a> technology. The bank currently has 5,000 NFC enabled machines and it plans to launch 10,000 new PoS which will accept contactless cards. <br />
<br /> SBI is the country's largest issue of <keyword id="6356475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="debit-card">debit card</keyword> and the third largest issuer of <keyword id="6368202" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Credit-card">credit card</keyword> after <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/hdfc-bank-ltd/stocks/companyid-9195.cms" target="_blank">HDFC Bank</a> and <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/icici-bank-ltd/stocks/companyid-9194.cms" target="_blank">ICICI Bank</a>. As on December 2014, SBI has issued as many as 14.7 crore debit cards and 30 lakh credit cards.<br />

SBI is ensuring you won’t ever bother again about forgetting your debit card in the ATM machine

Following non-availability of new currency notes, various merchants are rushing to procure Point-of-Sale (PoS) machines. In this backdrop, the banks, including State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, Canara Bank, Axis Bank and RBL Bank, have approached PoS procuring and manufacturing companies to get <keyword id="3907789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="card-swiping-machines">card swiping machines</keyword> and hand them over to the merchants.<br />

"We have placed an order for more than 40,000 terminals and will be increasing that number subsequently as we have seen a huge jump in the number of enquiries from merchant establishments," Sangram Singh, head of cards and merchant acquiring business at Axis Bank, told ET.<br />
<br />
The cost of one PoS ranges between Rs 6,000-10,000, which is often borne by the banks themselves in the case of big merchant establishments that generate significant volume of business such as major retail outlets, because it helps route payments through their platforms.<br />
<br /> "We are planning to install 25,000 terminals in the next few months as it will not only help in improving our current and savings account balance, but also increase customer convenience," Rakesh Sharma, managing director at Canara Bank, which currently has only 4,900 <keyword id="459467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="POS-terminals">PoS terminals</keyword>, told ET.<br />

"We have received a mandate to install 10,000 terminals from United Bank of India and 20,000 from RBL Bank.We already have around 27,000 terminals deployed for Union Bank of India, which I am sure will also be ramped up," Dewang Neralla, managing director at Atom Technologies, told ET.<br />
<br />
There are currently 1.5 million PoS terminals installed in the country. Bankers said one million terminals are likely to be installed in the next six months with the government tracking their installation on a regular basis.

Card swiping machines are selling like hot cakes, demand to increase multifold

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=471821093138&amp;set=a.471821023138.262634.312520783138&amp;type=3&amp;theater">Facebook/TrumpNewYork</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Hackers have snuck a virus into payment systems at several Trump Hotel destinations, potentially stealing customers credit card data, <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/30/technology/trump-hotels-hack/" target="_blank">CNN Money reports</a>.</p><p>The hotel chain has <a href="https://www.trumphotelcollection.com/data-security-notice" target="_blank">warned</a> that anybody who stayed at certain Trump Hotel locations in <span>Chicago, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Toronto, Miami, and New York between May 19 and June 2 of this year may have had their credit card data exposed to hackers.</span></p><p><span>The company says that the virus was located in point-of-sale systems such as credit card machines. Hackers may have stolen credit card information from Trump Hotels

<ul><li><strong><keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> said <keyword id="1426939" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ppsl" source="Orion">PPSL</keyword> has now received a letter from <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> in response to an application for the authorisation to provide PA services for online merchants.</strong></li><li><strong>Paytm, in the regulatory filing, said it can resubmit the PA application within 120 calendar days.</strong></li><li><strong>The company will not onboard new online merchants till the time approvals remain pending.</strong></li></ul><br />Banking regulator RBI has put a pause on onboarding of online merchants by <keyword id="12003494" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-payments-services" source="Orion">Paytm Payments Services</keyword>, even as the company said it will have no material impact on its business, according to a regulatory filing.<br /> <br /> One97 Communications (OCL), which owns the Paytm brand, had proposed to transfer the payment aggregator services business undertaken by it to Paytm Payments Services (PPSL) in December 2020 to comply with payment aggregator (PA) guidelines of the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) but the banking regulator had rejected its application. <br /><br /> The company had re-submitted the required documents in September 2021. <br /><br /> Paytm said PPSL has now received a letter from RBI in response to an application for the authorisation to provide PA services for online merchants.     <br /><br /> As per the letter, PPSL is required to "Seek necessary approval for past downward investment from the company into PPSL, to comply with FDI Guidelines" and "not onboard new online merchants".     <br /><br /> Paytm, in the regulatory filing, said it can resubmit the PA application within 120 calendar days.        <br /><br /> The company will not onboard new online merchants till the time approvals remain pending.       <br /><br /> PAs are entities that facilitate e-commerce sites and merchants to accept various payment instruments from customers for completion of their payment obligations without the need for merchants to create a separate payment integration system of their own.       <br /><br /> According to RBI's PAs guidelines, a single entity cannot continue to provide an e-commerce marketplace along with payment aggregator services and such payment aggregator services must be separated from the e-commerce marketplace business.     <br /><br /> Paytm further said there were no material observations from RBI and the move has no material impact on its business and revenues since the communication from the central bank is applicable only to onboarding of new online merchants.       <br /><br /> "We can continue to onboard new offline merchants and offer them payment services including All-in-One QR, <keyword id="10896801" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="soundbox" source="Orion">Soundbox</keyword>, <keyword id="3885098" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="card-machines" source="Orion">Card Machines</keyword>, etc. Similarly, PPSL can continue to do business with existing online merchants, for whom the services will remain unaffected. RBI pauses onboarding of online merchants by Paytm Payments Services; firm says no material impact on biz

<p>Both Visa and MasterCard are committed to the switch, which will render extinct the plastic in your wallets and purses right now.</p>
<p>No more black magnetic stripes; no more signing on the dotted line.</p>
<p>Americans who have traveled to Europe in recent years will know that the U.S.'s credit card system is embarrassingly old-fashioned by comparison. It's often difficult to use American credit cards abroad because the Europeans abandoned magnetic stripes and signatures years ago - they were too easily hacked. Credit and debit cards in the U.S. are about 10 years behind the rest of the world.</p>
<p>The new cards contain a microchip and require the owner to enter a PIN number into a payment machine at checkout.</p>
<p>They are more secure for a couple of reasons.</p>
<p>First, requiring the PIN prevents checkout staff from handling your card - they will simply hand you the point-of-sale device and customers will insert their cards and verify payment themselves. Currently, when a checkout staffer takes your card, they can surreptitiously swipe it through a card-copying machine, or simply copy the number on it. A version of this hack was used to steal 70 million credit card numbers from Target customer between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hackers altered the point-of-sale machines to copy the info on the magnetic stripe as it was swiped. With chip-and-PIN, the number on the chip alone is useless - you need the PIN too, and that can be changed anytime.</p>
<p>Second, the chip replaces the magnetic stripe, which is easily copied and therefore vulnerable to hackers, as the Target sting proved. <a href="http://www.whatprice.co.uk/financial/chip-and-pin-credit-card.html">In France, chip-and-PIN allegedly reduced credit-card fraud by 80%</a> (although the sourcing for this number is vague).</p>
<p>In fact, the reason the U.S. is being forced into making the chip-and-PIN change is that the fraud industry migrated from Europe to America simply because U.S. cards were easier to hack than the European ones, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/corporate-intelligence/2014/02/06/october-2015-the-end-of-the-swipe-and-sign-credit-card/">according to MasterCard's Carolyn Balfany</a>, the company's expert on the change.</p>

All American 'Sign-And-Swipe' Credit Cards Will Disappear In 2015

In fact, voters in Palm Beach County, where it appears this voting machine is from, filed <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2000/11/09/us/2000-elections-palm-beach-ballot-florida-democrats-say-ballot-s-design-hurt-gore.html">a lawsuit challenging the election results</a>.</p><p>After that contentious election, the federal government outlawed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/voting-machines-types-photos-2016-10/#punch-cards-6">punchcard voting machines</a>, saying all jurisdictions have to replace them.</p><p>So if this year's election has you feeling nostalgic for a magical period when the political climate was kinder and gentler, you might be willing to shell out $2,400 for this voting machine as a reminder that it never really existed.</p><p>This machine comes complete with a photo of George W. <p>Apple Pay represents Apple's official entrance into mobile payments, and while the new system will let you pay for your Big Mac with an iPhone 6 or Apple Watch, <a href="http://recode.net/2014/09/14/how-youll-buy-a-big-mac-with-your-iphone-at-a-mcdonalds-drive-through/">according to Re/code</a>, stores will be relying on the same machines they use to swipe your credit cards.</p>
<p>McDonald's, for example, uses a machine that can accept payment from traditional credit cards. But at the top of the machine is a NFC sensor that can wirelessly read the NFC chip nestled inside some more modern credit cards.</p>
<p>Apple Pay with the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch will "talk" to this same NFC sensor, but that could pose a problem for fast food locations like McDonald's, where the terminals usually rest inside the drive-through window, next to the cash register.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In this case, a McDonald's employee was nice enough to physically pick up and dangle the terminal out the window so the customer could tap their iPhone 6 against the machine.</p>
<p>In the future, stores might have to mount the payment terminals outside of their drive-through windows, as an employee can't handle a customer's iPhone for them due to the required fingerprint authentication.</p>
<p>Either that, or get an extension cord.</p>
<p>Depending on if Apple Pay truly takes off, retailers may need to ensure their payment terminals are within easy reach of their customers, as paying with an Apple Watch would also be cumbersome.</p>
<p>Soon, customers everywhere will have to decide between the hassle of reaching into their wallet for a physical credit card or annoying a fast-food employee for the terminal.</p>
<p>It'll probably come down to which one is faster.</p>
