<ul><li><strong>None of the companies met all the Climate Action 100+ Climate Accounting and Audit Assessment (<keyword id="3801965" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="caaa" source="Orion">CAAA</keyword>) methodology metric requirements. </strong></li><li><strong>Only eight, or six %, received "Partial" scores by providing all the information required by the CAAA methodology. </strong></li><li><strong>Research was performed in collaboration with the <keyword id="15174873" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="climate-accounting-and-audit-project" source="Orion">Climate Accounting and Audit Project</keyword>.</strong></li></ul> <br />Of the 134 multinational companies responsible for up to 80 % of corporate industrial greenhouse gas emissions, 98 % did not provide sufficient evidence about the impacts of climate-related matters.<br /><br />This is one of the findings of a new report of 'Still Flying Blind -- The Absence of Climate Risk in Financial Reporting' released by the <keyword id="4820833" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="carbon-tracker-initiative" source="Orion">Carbon Tracker Initiative</keyword> on Thursday.<br /><br />The companies surveyed included those from the fossil fuel, mining, manufacturing, automotive and technology sector that are focus companies for the investor-led Climate Action 100+ engagement.<br /><br />The lack of information available to investors is underscored by the fact that none of the companies met all the Climate Action 100+ Climate Accounting and Audit Assessment (CAAA) methodology metric requirements, which includes the analysis of company financial statements.<br /><br />Indeed, only eight, or six %, received "Partial" scores by providing all the information required by the CAAA methodology for at least one of the seven metrics used to assess them.<br /><br />The remaining 126 companies and their auditors did not meet any of the requirements.<br /><br /><keyword id="15174872" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="barbara-davidson" source="Orion">Barbara Davidson</keyword>, Carbon Tracker's Head of Accounting, Audit and Disclosure and lead author, told IANS: "Even after adjusting for changes in the methodology since last year and despite some improvements in disclosure, no CA100+ focus company provided all of the information required by the relevant standards or requested by investors.<br /><br />"This is despite the fact that most companies operate across a range of high emitting sectors including oil and gas, mining, transportation and industrials."<br /><br />"Many asset and liability values rely on forward-looking assumptions. When companies don't take climate-related matters into account, their financial statements may include overstated assets, understated liabilities and overstated profits."<br /><br />When available, analysts also reviewed audit committee (or equivalent) reports, finding that they often do not mention climate risks. Even when they do, most audit committees fail to consider the impacts of climate-related issues on company financial statements suggesting that audit committees are not providing sufficient oversight on these matters.<br /><br />Research was performed in collaboration with the Climate Accounting and Audit Project.<br /><br />Researchers also assessed the related external audit reports. Big emitters not acknowledging climate risks: Carbon Tracker

The value of share offerings in <keyword id="560717" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel">fossil fuel</keyword> producing and related companies dropped by $123 billion in the last decade underperforming a key world equities index by 52 per cent, while levels of <keyword id="6871900" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-shares">new shares</keyword> issued in the sector fell sharply, a <keyword id="3150009" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carbon-Tracker">Carbon Tracker</keyword> study published on Wednesday said.<br /><br />This trend was in marked contrast to activity in clean energy initial public offerings (IPOs) which overtook carbon-heavy flotations worldwide for the first time last year, suggesting <keyword id="6359051" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investors">investors</keyword> are shifting finance towards a low-carbon future as the coal, oil and gas industries have struggled. <br /><br />Fossil fuel issuance fell by 85 per cent from $70 billion to $10 billion in the period analysed from 2012 to 2020, while renewables raised a record $11 billion from public equity offerings in 2020 alone. <br /><br />Henrik Jeppesen, <keyword id="231060" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Report-author">report author</keyword> and US head of investor outreach, said: "Investors have woken up to the fact that fossil fuel companies are no longer the growth stories they once were. Climate risk is now very much a material one that cannot be ignored and clean energy stocks are rapidly replacing the old order as the choice investment for a transitioning world." <br /><br />A Tale of Two Share Issues: How fossil fuel equity offerings are losing investors billions found that over the decade investors have bought almost $640 billion of equity issued by fossil fuel producers, fossil fuel dependent utilities, pipelines and service companies. <br /><br />But their investments have lost roughly 20 per cent in value despite one of the longest and strongest equity bull markets on record. <br /><br />The report analyzed the stock market fortunes of fossil fuel companies and compared them with electric utilities and renewables and cleantech companies as well as the general equity market (the MSCI All Country World Index, or ACWI, is used as benchmark). <br /><br />An investor who bought into all fossil fuel and related equity issuances from 2012-2020 would have seen their investment underperform the ACWI by 52 per cent. <br /><br />However, despite equity raised by clean energy companies having grown rapidly, it is still trivial in the context of what has to be generated to finance a global energy transition. <br /><br />According to the IPCC special report on global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, investments into clean energy infrastructure need to be in the order of $3 trillion to $3.5 trillion annually. <br /><br />Moreover, of the total equity raised by companies on world markets, 10 per cent was accounted for by fossil fuel producer and electric utility companies but only one per cent in renewables and cleantech in the period analysed. <br /><br />Nevertheless, investors in renewable energy have received a good return, according to the study, with the MSCI Global Alternative Energy index outperforming the market (ACWI) by 54 per cent and with most of that return coming in 2020 -- making it one of the best performing sectors of the decade. <br /><br />Share issuances raised $56 billion over the period and investors have gained $77 billion in value. <br /><br />Since 2016, there has been a decline in fossil fuel IPOs, where companies raise money through new share issues, and an increase in sales by existing long-term holders, for example, founders, owners and governments, that could indicate declining confidence in future prospects for the sector. <br /><br />The proportion of equity issuances comprising secondary share sales surged from six per cent in 2016 to 58 per cent in 2020. <br /><br />Mark Campanale, founder and executive director, said: "It's astonishing that exchanges are still listing new fossil fuel companies intent on expanding production or developing new reserves in direct contravention of the Paris temperature goals. Share value of companies engaged in fossil fuels dropped by $123 billion over the last decade

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-celebrities-ranked-on-private-jet-co2-emissions-2022-7">Taylor Swift's private jets</a> transferred ownership last month.</li><li>Up until recently, the singer had two personal planes.</li></ul><p>Taylor Swift is down to one private jet.</p><p>The singer parted ways with her Dassault Falcon 900 on January 30, according to the Federal Aviation Authority's website.</p><p>The jet had previously been listed under SATA LLC, a company with the same address as Taylor Swift Productions in Nashville, according to Tennessee Secretary of State documents. Swift's holding company acquired the Dassault Falcon 900 in 2009, according to FAA data.</p><p>The jet is now registered to a company based in Missouri, which was incorporated in 2006. A representative from the company did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment ahead of publication.</p><p>It's unclear what the terms of the deal were. A brand new <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://bjtonline.com/aircraft/dassault-falcon-900lx"><u>Dassault 900</u></a> has a list price of $44 million, according to Business Jet Traveler.</p><p>Up until January, the pop star had two private jets: the Dassault 900 and a Dassault 7X. The Dassault 7X is still registered to Island Jet Inc., a holding company listed under the same address as Taylor Swift Productions.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-new-53-million-dassault-falcon-6x-private-jet-2023-8"><u>Dassault</u></a> 900 jet can carry up to 12 passengers. The Dassault 7X, by comparison, has a slightly larger cabin, carrying up to 16 passengers, and is designed for longer flights. </p><p>The last recorded flight on the Dassault 900 was on January 30, when the aircraft flew from Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri, according to data from the jet-tracking site <a target="_blank" href="https://jetspy.com/">JetSpy</a>. The last time her 7X plane flew was on January 28 from Baltimore to Nashville, according to the flight tracker.</p><p>If Swift doesn't use her 7X plane to get to Tokyo for this week's string of concerts, fans have wondered how she will travel to the Super Bowl this weekend in Las Vegas to cheer on her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. Most likely, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-tokyo-concert-super-bowl-japan-embassy-travis-kelce-2024-2">she'll charter a private plane</a>.</p><p>The singer has faced backlash for her private jet usage in the past. In 2022, Swift topped a list of celebrities with the most private jet carbon emissions. Last year, BI <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-spent-160-hours-using-private-jet-eras-tour-2023-8">reported</a> that the singer's private jets spent over 166 hours in flight during the initial US leg of her Eras tour.</p><p>Swift's spokesperson previously told BI the singer had purchased carbon credits to offset her jet use.</p><p>In the past, the singer has attempted to fly incognito, using the FAA's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/technology/equipadsb/privacy"><u>privacy ICAO aircraft address program</u></a>, also known as PIA.</p><p>However, Jack Sweeney, a college student who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-who-tracks-elon-musk-jet-launching-own-website-2023-2">tracks the flights of celebrities</a> using public information, has published flight data about Swift's travels on social media.</p><p>The singer has noticed.</p><p>Swift's legal team sent a cease-and-desist letter to Sweeney, accusing him of "stalking and harassing behavior" over the publicized flight data, The Washington Post first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/02/06/taylor-swift-jet-tracking-legal-threat/">reported</a> on Tuesday.</p><p>"I think the people are interested," Sweeney told BI over text. "You should have a decent expectation that your jet will be tracked whether or not I do it as, after all, it is public information."</p>

Most of the goods we use have touched an industry thought to be responsible for <a target="_blank" href="https://oecdstatistics.blog/2023/06/15/new-estimates-provide-insights-on-co2-emissions-from-global-shipping/#:~:text=In%202022%2C%20there%20were%20an,companies%20based%20in%20OECD%20countries."><u>858 million metric tons</u></a> of carbon-dioxide emissions last year: maritime shipping.</p><p>The International Maritime Organization has committed to reaching <a target="_blank" href="https://www.imo.org/en/MediaCentre/HotTopics/Pages/Cutting-GHG-emissions.aspx"><u>net-zero emissions by 2050</u></a>. But a recent analysis suggests the industry is <a target="_blank" href="https://cms.globalmaritimeforum.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/GTZ_ClimateActionInShipping2023.pdf"><u>struggling</u></a> to take steps toward that goal, including using zero-emission options for 5% of its fuels by 2030.</p><p>The shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk and its parent company, AP Moller Holding, this year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.c2xglobal.com/news/c2x-to-build-large-scale-green-methanol-production-for-multiple-industries/"><u>founded a subsidiary</u></a> for green-methanol production. But sources of green methanol are limited, and even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/30/business/economy/shipping-climate-change-green-fuel.html?login=email&amp;auth=login-email"><u>Maersk's CEO</u></a> has said methanol won't be a silver bullet for the industry.</p><p>In addition to using biofuels and green methanol, Maersk is also relying on software to help it reduce emissions. The company told Business Insider it had grown its IT department to almost 6,000 software engineers from fewer than 2,000 in four years, largely to scale up its customer-facing logistics platforms, streamline its ship operations, and reach its sustainability goals.</p><p>A representative for Maersk said strategies to make the company's ships sail more efficiently are part of Maersk's calculation for reaching net zero.</p><p>As progress toward getting zero-emission fuels aboard lags, engineers and startups working with digital technology are hoping to fill the gap.</p><h2>Autonomous tech and AI can help streamline sailing and cut fuel costs</h2><p>Over the past decade, startups across the world have started tackling autonomous shipping. Companies such as <a target="_blank" href="https://unleash-future-boats.com/"><u>Unleash Future Boats</u></a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://seafar.eu/"><u>Seafar</u></a> are working on unmanned waterborne trucks operating in ports and partially or fully remote-controlled ships operating along rivers and coasts.</p><p>Michael Johnson, a marine engineer who was formerly an executive at companies including Crowley Maritime, said he founded <a target="_blank" href="https://sea-machines.com/"><u>Sea Machines Robotics</u></a> in 2016 after realizing the industry needed to push beyond the manual technologies of the 20th century.</p><p>"The only time the maritime industry is ever on the front page of a paper is when there's an accident. But there's much more to us than that," Johnson, who's also Sea Machines' CEO, told BI.</p><div type="image" title="Headshot of Michael Johnson" height="540" width="720" msid="105636227" hostid="261" sizebytes="15560"></div><p>Sea Machines has raised more than $40 million so far to develop products including an AI-based computer vision sensor for ships. Recent research suggests <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0029801823008041">next-generation autonomous ships</a> could help cut carbon emissions by about 10%.</p><div type="image" title="A control room team in the US monitors (and celebrates) the progress of a workboat traveling around Denmark using Sea Machines Robotics' autonomous self-piloting system." height="1300" width="2135" msid="105636229" hostid="261" sizebytes="101112"></div><p>"When you're burning a hundred tons of fuel a day that costs $650 a ton, it's significant savings," Johnson said.</p><p>In a market where biofuels and synthetic fuels can cost <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/charts/indicative-shipping-fuel-cost-ranges"><u>at least twice as much</u></a> as fossil fuels, Johnson said he hopes that fuel savings from autonomy can help encourage the uptake of zero-emission fuels required by the industry's net-zero ambitions.</p><h2>New control systems and interfaces can help crews optimize operations</h2><p>For an industry with over <a target="_blank" href="https://unctad.org/system/files/official-document/rmt2022ch2_en.pdf"><u>100,000 vessels</u></a>, decarbonization will take effort from a variety of companies and technologies. These companies are primarily exploring green energy from ammonia, nuclear reactions, and wind, as well as technology like AI-powered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.deepsea.ai/">route-optimization software</a>.</p><p>As more technologies are introduced, a ship's operator has to take in more information and act on it. Johnson said an autonomous system could help manage the output from optimization apps and alleviate information overload.</p><p>"It's much like what you see in the very efficient distribution networks like Amazon distribution network, where they've tied their robots to their logistics software, enabling an immense amount of productivity," Johnson said. "I think we can do that on the oceans as well."</p><p>A startup called <a target="_blank" href="https://smart-ship.eu/"><u>Smart-Ship</u></a> is taking a similar approach. Rather than automating certain parts of the voyage, Smart-Ship aims to recommend the safest or most efficient controls for an operator to use at a given moment.</p><p>Smart-Ship offers what's called a force-feedback lever — essentially a high-tech version of the joysticks that control a ship's throttle, thrust, and rotation. The company has sold a little over 100 of them so far.</p><div type="image" title="Smart-Ship's force-feedback lever." height="1505" width="1911" msid="105636230" hostid="261" sizebytes="83302"></div><p>While traditional levers are static, Smart-Ship's version is designed to use subtle movements or resistance to signal to an operator to reduce throttle when approaching an object, steer away when approaching shallow water, or change speed when there's an option to use fuel more efficiently.</p><p>"People really need to rethink the way they're sailing ships," said Jelle Tiemensma, Smart-Ship's cofounder and chief technology officer.</p><div type="image" title="Headshot of Jelle Tiemensma" height="1856" width="2475" msid="105636231" hostid="261" sizebytes="89334"></div><p>While these companies don't imagine that large ships will be fully unmanned anytime soon, they're betting that advanced software and intuitive interfaces can help crew members sail more sustainably.</p><h2>The industry needs more collaboration and digital connectivity</h2><p>Sofia Fürstenberg Stott, a sustainability consultant for industry stakeholders such as ship owners, manufacturers, and insurance companies, said that so far the industry's sustainability projects have been small-scale, like pilot programs for new maritime tech.</p><p>"We are not yet in the scale-up phase where we have established the business models and the new working environment," Stott said.</p><div type="image" title="Sofia Fürstenberg Stott headshot" height="2449" width="2279" msid="105636334" hostid="261" sizebytes="457956"></div><p>To move beyond that, Stott said, companies need to come together to create a plan like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sustainableshipping.org/roadmap/"><u>Sustainable Shipping Initiative's Roadmap</u></a> to prod them to actually take steps toward net-zero emissions by 2050.</p><p>"That benefit may not be a benefit that you can count in dollars next year, or even five years from now," Stott said. "But it's about staying sustainable for the long term."</p><p>Mikael Lind, a research advisor specializing in maritime informatics at the Research Institutes of Sweden, said one of the shipping industry's obstacles to decarbonization is a lack of digital connectivity.</p><p>"We need to understand the deviation between plan and the actual outcome," Lind said. "In the aviation sector, this is rather simple, because if you're up in the air you have flight trackers and you know that the plane needs to be down on the ground pretty soon, otherwise it would crash."</p><div type="image" title="Headshot of Mikael Lind" height="3292" width="2996" msid="105636335" hostid="261" sizebytes="505822"></div><p>But with boats, data isn't always available for cargo owners to track their shipments. Storms or alternate routes can cause multiday delays. And when ships arrive at a busy port, they may need to idle for days to wait for an open spot to unload.</p><p>Lind and his team are working with industry partners like the port operator PSA International to pilot a data-sharing initiative called <a target="_blank" href="https://virtualwatchtower.org/"><u>virtual watchtowers</u></a> to better keep an eye on disruptions in the supply chain.</p><p>And the industry is working on logistics technologies to help achieve so-called <a target="_blank" href="https://greenvoyage2050.imo.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/GIA-just-in-time-hires.pdf"><u>just-in-time arrivals</u></a>. By slightly slowing their routes in order to arrive at a port only when there's an open spot, <a target="_blank" href="https://maritime-executive.com/editorials/partnering-towards-zero-emissions-shipping-playbook-part-4"><u>ships could cut their annual emissions</u></a>.</p><p>In an industry <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energymonitor.ai/sectors/transport/net-zero-shipping-where-theres-a-will/?cf-view"><u>struggling</u></a> to gather the biofuels it needs to keep pace with its decarbonization goals, shippers will need to embrace any emissions-saving technologies they can to reach net zero.</p><p>"There's a lot of focus on how can you utilize existing technologies, existing ship infrastructure, in order to get to a point where you're much more carbon-emission free?" Lind said. "And this is super complex."</p>

AI, autonomous systems, and digital connectivity could help ships cut emissions

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened on a strong note at ₹81.52 against the greenback, then pared the gains and fell to ₹81.66, registering a fall of 4 paise over its previous closing. <br /><br />In initial trading, the rupee also touched ₹81.51 against the American currency. <br /><br />On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated by 20 paise to end at ₹81.62 against the US dollar. <br /><br />The forex market was closed on Wednesday on account of Dussehra. <br /><br />According to Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at <keyword id="197560" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-securities" source="Orion">Reliance Securities</keyword>, the rupee opened stronger tracking a fall in the dollar over the past two sessions. Shifts in organization structure &amp; work cultures open up new opportunities</strong><br /><br /> The pandemic has fundamentally altered ways of working across industries. We set up a quarterly “new Normal Tracker” in 2020, to understand shifts in consumer habits and behaviour. This tracker identifies the “desire for flexibility” as the primary reason for people to shift jobs.<br /><br /> This has resulted in a huge rise in the gig economy, which is slated to grow at a CAGR of over 17% for the next 3 years. Here's what will happen when 30 billion devices are connected to the internet

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Proterra</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>A Silicon Valley-based startup is making serious moves to become the Tesla of buses.</p><p>Proterra has quietly been working on all-electric buses since 2004. In 2009, it made its first sale: three buses to Foothill Transit in Southern California.</p><p>Flash forward to 2017 and the startup has raised over $140 million in venture funding, opened its second manufacturing plant, and sold a total of 400 buses. Proterra is looking to go public at some point this year or in 2018, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-01-03/proterra-nabs-140-million-as-electric-bus-maker-sees-2017-ipo" target="_blank">Bloomberg reported</a>.</p><p>In essence, Proterra is rapidly becoming the next alternative <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> startup to keep an eye on.</p><h2>A range on par with diesel</h2><p>Proterra started hitting its stride in 2015 when it <a href="https://www.proterra.com/our-story/" target="_blank">sold 62 buses</a> across 12 different transit agencies. But arguably its biggest move occurred in September when the startup <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/proterra-unveils-electric-bus-with-350-mile-range-2016-9" target="_blank">unveiled</a> its brand new, long-range electric bus.</p><p>Called the Catalyst E2, the 40-foot bus can drive 350 miles on a single charge on typical test track conditions. That means the buses can operate for a full 18 hours, the same as a diesel bus.</p><p>The Catalyst E2 is a major improvement from Proterra's first-generation bus that had a range of just 146 miles.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Proterra</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Matt Horton, chief commercial officer of Proterra, told Business Insider that sales have grown because of the bus' longer range.</p><p>"All sorts of transit agencies are now realizing that there really is a vehicle now that can handle all of the routes in their transit systems, which is something they could never claim before," Horton said.</p><p>Since the close of 2015, Proterra has sold 239 buses, bringing its total to 384.</p><p>Proterra announced in January that it made its largest sale to-date - 73 buses to King County Metro Transit in Seattle, totaling $55 million. </p><p>"We intend to build well over 100 vehicles this year. That would certainly be more than double what we did in 2016," Horton said.</p><p>Altogether, Proterra has sold buses to transit agencies in 36 different states. This includes transit agencies in major cities like New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago, which have either bought Proterra buses or will finalize a sale with the startup in the next 12 months, Horton said.</p><h2>Expansion in 2017</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Phil Noble</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Proterra is looking to expand going forward. The electric bus startup manufactures its buses at a plant in Greenville, South Carolina, but recently opened a second manufacturing facility hear Los Angeles. Proterra will begin production at its LA plant in March.</p><p>Josh Ensign, a former vice president of manufacturing for Tesla, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/proterra-unveils-electric-bus-with-350-mile-range-2016-9" target="_blank">joined Proterra</a> as chief operating officer in September. He is tasked with scaling operations at the Greenville plant and starting production in LA as the startup looks to ramp up production.</p><p>Proterra now has the capacity to build 500 buses a year between its two facilities, Horton said.</p><p>Earlier in January, Proterra secured $140 million in its fifth round of funding. According to <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/proterra#/entity" target="_blank">Crunchbase</a>, the latest round brings Proterra's total funding to $322 million.</p><p>Proterra said the funding round was led by $40 million from an undisclosed investor. The other $60 million came from several new and existing investors that include Tao Capital Partners, Kleiner Perkins, and GM Ventures.</p><p>Proterra doesn't disclose its revenue or the valuation of its latest funding round. But it's ramping up production at a time where electric vehicles are starting to displace demand for oil and coal.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-cheaper-renewables-to-halt-coal-and-oil-demand-growth-from-2020-research-2017-2" target="_blank">A study</a> by the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London and independent think-tank Carbon Tracker Initiative looked at cost forecasts for electric vehicles and solar panels and found that their falling cost will halt the growth in demand for coal and oil starting in 2020.</p><p>The study says fossil fuels could lose 10% of market share to solar panels and electric vehicles in the next decade.</p><p>It's a trend Horton said he is already starting to see that should bode well for Proterra's future.</p><p>"In large part, the reason this transition to all electric is going to go so fast is that the economics of battery-electric buses are incredibly strong," he said. But his campaign isn't particularly fazed by his debate debut, and his staff believes they can turn things around when Yang takes the stage next week. </p><p>In the June 27 debate, Yang - a first-time political candidate - ended up on stage with nine other candidates, including four of the frontrunners: former Vice President <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-joe-biden-bio-age-family-key-positions-2019-3">Joe Biden</a>, Sen. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-bernie-sanders-bio-age-family-key-positions-2019-3">Bernie Sanders</a>, Sen. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-kamala-harris-bio-age-family-key-positions-2019-3">Kamala Harris</a>, and Mayor <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-pete-buttigieg-bio-age-family-key-positions-2019-3">Pete Buttigieg.</a></p><p>Despite running one of the most unique presidential campaigns and rolling out more policy proposals than any other candidate, Yang was only asked two questions individually in the two-hour debate. As a result, Yang spoke the least of any candidate, talking for just two minutes and 38 seconds.</p><p>While the moderators tried to keep things on track, the debate went off schedule, with Harris confronting Biden over his record on racial issues in a tense exchange which took up several minutes and overshadowed the other candidates. </p><p>In the immediate aftermath of the debate, Yang accused NBC of deliberately cutting his mic off, which the network has thoroughly denied.</p><p>Yang further explained himself <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/democratic-presidential-candidate-andrew-yang-view-forward-upcoming/story?id=64179529">in a July 8 appearance on ABC's "The View." </a></p><p>"I was only asked two questions over two hours, which is there for everyone to see, and so I just shared my experience with some supporters after the fact, but we're just thrilled we have another debate in July and in September," Yang said. </p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong></em><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-yang-did-not-wear-tie-to-democratic-debate-2019-6" data-analytics-position="10">Andrew Yang went for a casual look at the Democratic debate, leading Brian Williams to ask 'Would it kill you to throw on a tie?'</a></em></p><p>The DNC set much stricter requirements for candidates looking to compete in the next round of debates in September and October, requiring contenders to reach 2% in four DNC-sanctioned polls <em>and </em>obtain 130,000 unique donors, the latter of which Yang has achieved.</p><p>He has until August 29 to reach 2% in three more polls to qualify, according <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dHSFg0jrAeIAqDlFZqAu-5N2x-wk8PT-6H4DbCendUM/edit#gid=1555665298">to Politico's tracker of Democratic primary polls</a>. "If Democrats try to play Trump's game, we're going to lose." </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Drew Angerer/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">John Hickenlooper and Andrew Yang</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The next round of debates, which will take place on July 30 and 31 in Detroit, will be hosted by CNN and moderated by anchors Don Lemon, Jake Tapper, and Dana Bash.</p><p>Unlike the MSNBC-hosted debates, CNN has said that they will not ask candidates to raise their hands or give one-word answers to indicate their positions on questions.</p><p>Jones said he and the campaign were "looking forward" to the next round of debates, and were "confident" that CNN's new rule meant that Yang would be given more speaking time.</p><p>Yang's candidacy is best-known for his unique policy idea of giving every American a universal basic income of $1,000 a month, which he calls The Freedom Dividend, in order to help American workers affected by a changing economy moving towards automation. </p><p>"If we're only one on the stage willing to discuss UBI and take that step to show we can do this, it'll make people wonder why no one else is willing," Jones said. </p><p>While Jones did not weigh on on the ongoing debate over whether the DNC should host a separate debate devoted to climate issues, he said he expected to fine-tune Yang's answers on the topic.</p><p>In both the debate and a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BusinessInsiderToday/videos/1257120227773169/">Business Insider Today town hall in April</a>, Yang said he believed that a universal basic income would help solve climate change by "getting the boot off people's necks" so that they're no longer struggling financially could focus on climate change.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong></em><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-activists-dnc-democratic-primary-debates-2019-6" data-analytics-position="2">Climate activists said the first Democratic debates failed to address the scale of the 'crisis'</a></em></p><p>But in the rapid-fire setting of a debate, that answer didn't necessarily come across easily or make a strong impression. Jones said that Yang would adapt his answer to emphasize how UBI can benefit people affected by climate-induced pollution or natural disasters, and the other climate-related components of his platform, like a carbon dividend. </p><p>Aside from UBI, Jones told INSIDER that the Yang campaign is hoping to spark a discussion on the demise of the brick-and-mortar retail industry, and how the next president should address the rapidly changing state of the retail industry. </p><p>Jones said he hoped that Yang would get a chance to discuss both how UBI and his proposed <a href="https://www.yang2020.com/policies/american-mall-act/">American Mall Act</a> will both help retail workers displaced by automation, and find new economically-revitalizing uses for large properties once occupied by malls, which are closing around the country <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamdanziger/2019/04/10/retail-downsizing-will-accelerate-as-75000-stores-will-be-forced-to-close-by-2026/#36974966339e">at a rapid pace. </a></p><p>Sanders has also made advocating for retail workers an essential component of his campaign, publicly tangling with Wal-mart and the e-commerce giant Amazon on multiple occasions <a href="https://reason.com/2019/07/16/sanders-warren-use-prime-day-to-blast-amazon/">over their treatment of employees. </a></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-american-retail-apocalypse-in-photos-2017-3">These haunting photos of the retail apocalypse reveal a new normal in America as Sears clings on after closing hundreds of stores</a></em></p><p>Overall, Jones didn't seem too fazed by the lack of speaking time Yang got in the first debate. After all, Yang's initially-obscure campaign came to national prominence not through traditional political channels like debates but by a loyal army of internet meme-makers who call themselves the "Yang Gang" and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-yang-online-memes-2020-fundraising-2019-4">were the driving force behind Yang's surge in donations and ascent to national prominence</a> in February and March. </p><p>Jones said that in addition to a stronger debate performance, the Yang team is expanding their grassroots, on-the-ground organizing efforts in early states like Iowa and New Hampshire, where Yang attended high school. Presidential candidate Andrew Yang says he's ready to bounce back from a disappointing first debate performance

<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/travel-360"></div><p></p></div></div>To you, hotel rooms may seem the same - there's a bed, a TV, maybe two nightstands and a bathroom - but in reality, hotel rooms are changing at the speed of light: modernizing, adapting to today's traveler's needs, and looking to innovate for the future.</p><p>Hotels are scrambling to anticipate travelers' future needs, and while no one has a crystal ball, some changes already taking effect can help us get a glimpse of what's to come.</p><p>We spoke to hotel designers and industry insiders to get an idea of what hotels<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> will look like in the future.</span></p><h3 dir="ltr">Bathrooms will get bigger</h3><p dir="ltr">The quality of a hotel is generally measured by its bathrooms, and the number of fixtures those feature (two sinks, separate shower and bathtub, etc.), as bathrooms are the most expensive rooms to build.</p><p dir="ltr">According to Zeev Sharon, a hotel development vet and the founder of <a href="http://hotelied.com">Hotelied</a>, a hotel booking site that gives users discounts based on their social media presence, research also shows that guests increasingly evaluate a room based on the bathroom these days. He says that we will be seeing bathrooms expand more and more - up to 50% or more of the total hotel room - as the guest room becomes smaller.</p><h3>Bathrooms will also become more spa-like<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h3><p>"People like luxurious, spa-like bathrooms," Sharon explains. "When hotels design a bathroom now, they really need to think about things like counter space - is there enough space for a toiletry bag? - and a rain shower head is becoming standard. A lot of attention has gone into reinventing the hotel room bathroom to make it more spa-like, and you see it at every level hotel. It's all relative, but even at a three-star hotel a lot more attention is being given to the bathroom."</p><h3 dir="ltr">Guest rooms will get smaller</h3><p dir="ltr">Sharon says that flatscreen TVs are a hotel developer's best friend, as they have allowed rooms to become smaller thanks to no longer needing bulky armoires to accommodate bulky TVs. Hotels are moving more and more towards the "essentials-only" model, as evidenced by pod hotels (like <a href="http://www.yotel.com/en/">Yotel</a>), of which he predicts more will pop up.</p><p dir="ltr">Mike Tiedy, the Senior Vice President of Global Brand Design and Innovation at Starwood Hotels &amp; Resorts agrees. "On the select service end with brands like Aloft, Four Points and Element, the rooms are getting smaller and more efficient with the emphasis on the lobby for work and social activities," he says. "The room becomes a comfy nest with everything you need at your fingertips and nothing more."</p><h3 dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h3><h3 dir="ltr">Rooms will have high-tech features like the ability to control the lights and air-conditioning with your phone</h3><p dir="ltr">Most people rarely leave the house without their smartphones, laptops, iPads, fitness trackers, etc. Sharon says that hotels are starting to incorporate this into their hotel room design.</p><p dir="ltr">"It's becoming more about giving you access to hotel services through your own devices than providing you with the device. When was the last time you used a hotel phone? A lot of the thinking now is less about giving you the phone, but more about  giving you the app to use on your phone," Sharon explains. This means that guests will likely be able to control everything - lights, blinds, AC - via their smartphones soon, or a provided touchscreen.    </p><p dir="ltr">Marriott recently put this concept into action by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-coming-to-marriott-hotels-2015-6">collaborating with Netflix</a> on their in-room entertainment, and both Personality Hotels and Starwood already let guests use their smartphones as room keys in many of their properties.</p><h3 dir="ltr">There will be lots of easily accessible outlets in guest rooms</h3><p dir="ltr">The sigh of relief breathed by anyone who has had to charge their cellphone halfway across the hotel room or had to rearrange furniture to find an outlet is audible. According to Sharon, "everyone wants a lot of outlets to charge everything, and that's become a huge deal. Outlets need to be easy and convenient and there's a lot of thought going into that."</p><h3 dir="ltr">Rooms will be equipped with high-tech lighting features<span style="color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></h3><h3 dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h3><p dir="ltr">Tiedy says that "LED technology has created opportunities to incorporate lighting in new and unique ways with more adaptability and control."</p><p dir="ltr">Starwood's Aloft brand is already experimenting with a bathroom mirror that has touchscreen buttons allowing guests to adjust the bathroom's LED lighting to make it as flattering as possible, as well as mobile phone controlled temperature and lighting, while its Four Points properties are developing Smart Mirrors, digital mirrors with touch screen capabilities on which to read headlines or check the weather for instance.</p><h3>Rooms will have minimalist design and open shelving rather than traditional bulky furniture</h3><p dir="ltr">People rarely unpack, so, according to Luanne Fausett, a hotel designer who has worked for brands like Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham and IHG, instead of closets we will be seeing open wire shelving and "dressing areas" with clever spaces for suitcases, all of which will be designed to give the impression of more space.</p><p dir="ltr">Similarly, since guests don't often use the desks, Tiedy says that rooms will have "comfortable and adaptable areas to work or relax, with less emphasis on the desk."</p><h3 dir="ltr">Hotels will focus more on quality bedding</h3><p dir="ltr">Hotels have been trying to reinvent "the sleeping experience" since 1999, when Westin spent $30 million developing the 10-layer Heavenly Bed, which promises the perfect night's sleep. Today, there's an increased focus on quality bedding as hotels are spending more and more money on it, and have thankfully come to the realization that no one wants to touch those duvet covers with a 10 foot pole. Both duvet covers and curtains will disappear.</p><h3>Lobbies will become high-tech m<span>ulti-use spaces</span></h3><h3 dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h3><p dir="ltr">The days of a staid lobby with a front desk is coming to an end. Hotel lobbies are increasingly becoming multi-use spaces with bars, restaurants, lounges and business centers all rolled into one. "Hotels are starting to dramatically change public space" Sharon says. "They're blending spaces and using a living room concept."</p><p dir="ltr">Tiedy says that the evolution of digital is driving change in the lobby too, as well as the rooms.</p><p dir="ltr">"Personal devices with more and more access to streaming content allow guests to work and socialize anywhere in the hotel," said Tiedy. "This has a huge influence on how we design the spaces, making sure that we offer a mix of public and private opportunities for individuals who want to be in a public space but still be alone, to spaces for small and large groups to assemble for an impromptu meeting or eat and drink. They all need great Wi-Fi, power and different types of seating."</p><h3>Social media will affect hotel design</h3><p dir="ltr">Hotels today need to start thinking about their social media presence - beyond opening a Facebook page or Twitter account. Sharon says that they need to think "what will my hotel look like on social media? How can we look <em>good</em> on social media? Where in my hotel is the Instagram moment?"</p><p>Social media has given designers the need to think about a wow factor, about Instagrammable pics that guests will take and share. Sharon says that infinity pools and rooftop bars are always safe bets, but that in the future hotels will have to take it to the next level, literally creating premeditated Instagram photos. The <a href="http://www.1888hotel.com.au/">1888 Hotel</a> in Sydney, for example, already features "selfie spaces," and there's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sol-wave-house-twitter-themed-hotel-in-spain-2013-8">a Twitter-themed hotel in Spain</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p><h3 dir="ltr">Hotels will integrate more natural elements and materials in their designs</h3><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Aside from increasing their efforts at reducing their carbon footprint, "hotels will start integrating the outdoors," Fausett says, citing more organic lines, as well as natural materials, colors and textures that give a hotel a more natural feeling vibe. Indoor and outdoor boundaries will become increasingly blurred, catering to something called biophilia, which is the theory that people instinctively feel more at ease in natural-feeling surroundings.</span></p><h3>There will be a lot of white</h3><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p dir="ltr">Fausett says that design will become more and more neutral, with only pops of color. She says that guests' perception of cleanliness is becoming a bigger and bigger concern for hotels, and since white is unforgiving when it comes to stains and dirt, an increasing number of hotels are embracing light carpets and white bedding. Formerly, the thought process was the opposite - that colorful, patterned carpets and duvets would be easier to clean as they masked stains. She also predicts that this will mean more tile floors, rather than carpeted rooms, as those are easier to clean.</p><h3 dir="ltr">There will be more local flavor</h3><p dir="ltr">Fausett predicts more of a local flavor in hotels: more regional art, food and brands, as hotels will cater to travelers wanting a taste of their surroundings, rather than the same big box hotel room. Plus, hotel owners realize that this offers a more genuine, memorable experience to travelers, and gives them a chance to showcase local pride. In the future, architects designing hotels will take their surroundings into consideration more and more.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">  </span></p><h3 dir="ltr">Hotels will place more emphasis on fitness</h3><p dir="ltr">The health craze has only just started making its way into hotels, and will continue to become a larger focus. Instead of a dark, windowless room with three and a half broken pieces of gym equipment, hotels will invest money into having real fitness centers.</p><p dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p dir="ltr"> <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Moreover, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fitness-hotels-trend-2015-5">some hotels are becoming full-blown fitness centers,</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> integrating fitness equipment directly into the guestrooms and offering wellness programs that touch on everything from physical fitness to balanced meals to meditation and mental well-being. Several chains of fitness hotels have already opened including </span><a href="http://www.ihg.com/evenhotels/hotels/us/en/reservation">EVEN Hotels</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> and </span><a href="http://www.tryphotels.com/en/index.html">TRYP by Wyndham</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, and </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fitness-hotels-trend-2015-5">Equinox is planning to open its own chain of hotels</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><h3>Hotel restaurants will serve fresh, locally-sourced food</h3><p dir="ltr">The health craze has moved beyond fitness to include healthier eating habits, and a desire for organic, locally sourced food.</p><p>More and more hotels now boast farm-to-table fare at their restaurants, but increasingly, they're taking it to the next level, with more of a roof-to-table approach: a growing number of resorts are starting their own urban farms, rooftop bee farms, and herb gardens from which they source their restaurant's ingredients. Just this past March, Shangri-La unveiled its<a href="http://www.shangri-la-sustainability.com/"> Rooted in Nature initiative,</a> which promotes the use of sustainable and locally sources meat, fish, and produce.</p><p><span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In addition, Fausett predicts that vending machines will be replaced with healthy snacks.
