Grind's director said about 75% of its subscribers joined this year.</li><li>Each brand Insider tried was refreshingly distinct - because of its marketing, as well as its taste.</li></ul>During lockdown last year, Martin Gausby, a Danish developer living in London, subscribed to a coffee <keyword id="11922166" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="delivery" source="Orion">delivery</keyword> service and discovered that the bean's arrival became <a href="https://twitter.com/gausby/status/1405157103833128963">a weekly highlight</a>. "I get my coffee from <a href="https://shop.squaremilecoffee.com/">Square Mile Coffee</a>, a company founded by James Hoffman right here in London," Gausby said a few days ago. "He has a YouTube channel about all sorts of coffee-related stuff, and I enjoy that, so I like supporting him by having a subscription to his coffee."Over the last few weeks, Insider tested a few coffee subscriptions services in London to see how they worked. Our choices were <a href="https://www.pactcoffee.com">Pact</a>, <a href="https://kissthehippo.com/">Kiss the Hippo</a>, and <a href="https://grind.co.uk/">Grind</a>.<h2>Two days, three boxes of coffee</h2>The first two packages - Kiss the Hippo and Grind - arrived three days after the orders were placed. The Pact delivery came the following afternoon.The boxes from Pact and Kiss the Hippo were slim enough to fit through the mail slot. The first delivery of Grind came with a tin, so it was a bit thicker but the company said the following packages are letterbox-friendly.<div type="image" title="Coffee packages from Pact, Grind, and Kiss the Hippo in front of white tiles" height="2656" width="3992" msid="85536941" hostid="261"></div>Many friendly emails arrived over the next few days. Each company wanted feedback on the coffee.Of the three companies, Kiss the Hippo sent the most emails. "Look out for the postman," said a subject line when the coffee shipped. The following day, before the coffee arrived, another email said, "Do You Have Everything You Need?" with a range of coffee-brewing products for sale. When the coffee arrived the following day, an email said, "Something Big is Here!"<div type="image" title="A can of Grind coffee beans seen from above next to a green plant" height="2656" width="3992" msid="85536942" hostid="261"></div>In the month following our order, more than a dozen of Kiss the Hippo's chatty emails arrived, compared to a few each from the other brands. Insider has reached out to the company for comment. <h2>Pact promises 'rare' coffees</h2>Each of the three roasters had similar ordering routines. Their websites were flowchart-like, with each answer leading to another. Pact's had the most questions. <div type="image" title="A purple bag of Pact Micro-lot coffee on a gray kitchen counter" height="2656" width="3992" msid="85536944" hostid="261"></div>Pact first asked for a choice between regular or decaf. Then asked how the coffee would be brewed - Aeropress, Chemex, espresso machine, etc. After choosing the Hario V60, a pour-over, the site asked whether the order would be wholebean or medium grind. Wholebean for us.And the final step was choosing your coffee from three options for 250-gram bags. A £6.95 House blend, a £7.95 Select roast, or a £9.95 Micro-lot, which was said to be, "Rare, high-scoring coffees." Our La Pederogosa "Micro-lot" beans were grown in Colombia by Mauricio Vega. The packaging said they were roasted on the day of the order, and packaged the followed day in London by Emily, whose last name wasn't given. Last year, <keyword id="11922167" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pact-coffee" source="Orion">Pact Coffee</keyword> CEO Paul Turton told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coffee-importers-are-worried-about-post-brexit-shipping-bottlenecks-2020-12">Insider</a> that its subscriber list was growing quickly amid the UK lockdowns. Many of those subscribers have stuck around, he said a few days ago. "The 'covid cohort' as we call it - or those who joined us after March 2020 have stayed loyal to us despite restrictions easing, especially now everyone has had the chance to fully experience Pact's proposition over a pretty long period," he said via email. <h2>Grind is Instagram-friendly</h2>Shoreditch-based Grind had the most eye-catching packaging, and the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/grind/">highest follower count</a> on Instagram. The brand got its start in 2011, making it the oldest of the three. "We'd been quietly working on our coffee-at-home project for about a year when the pandemic forced us to close all of our cafés," Ted Robinson, Grind's director, said a few weeks ago. Between February and May last year, orders grew by a multiple of 30, he said. Growth has continued, with more than 75% of the company's subscribers joining in 2021. The house roast cost £13.50 per delivery, but plan pricing for each brand was based on how many cups you drink per day. Our first order from Grind included a reusable tin in <a href="https://www.insider.com/millennial-pink-products-2017-4">millennial</a> <a href="https://www.insider.com/millennial-pink-kitchen-products-2017-5">pink</a>.<div type="image" title="A pink coffee tin in a package from Grind Coffee in London" height="2656" width="3992" msid="85536945" hostid="261"></div>Grind didn't say where the coffee had been grown or roasted, but said it was "shipped climate neutral." "We've offset the carbon emissions of all our deliveries for almost a year, protecting over 40,000 trees in the Jari Pará Forest Conservation Project in the Amazon," the company said on a little card slipped into the box. Robinson said the company has "helped over 100,000 people make better, more sustainable coffee at home" during the pandemic. Many of those buyers, he said, have stuck around even as the city reopens. <h2>Kiss the Hippo promotes its farmers</h2>Like Pact, Kiss the Hippo used its packaging to promote the small farms on which the beans were grown. Our slim bag with a little red hippo logo was full of coffee from El Salvador. A label on the back said the Red Pacamara beans had been grown by The Diaz Family.The family - Jose Efrin, Jose William, Arnulfo, and Santos - works on a few farms that "sit close together where they pool resources and elevate each other through a collective family bond."<div type="image" title="A cardboard box with a bag of Kiss the Hippo coffee with a red hippo logo" height="2656" width="3992" msid="85536948" hostid="261"></div>The coffee itself came with tasting notes: acidity at 4/5 and body at 3/5. It was pitched as having notes of "elderflower, apricot, lemon." Our single-origin whole-bean option cost £12 per delivery. <h2>Three fresh brews, all very good</h2>Each of the brands had their own distinct flavors. Kiss the Hippo had a lemon zest, light and airy, as its tasting notes said. Grind was richer and darker. Pact was somewhere in the middle, balanced and a little earthy. The beans seemed fresher than what those from high-end grocery store in London, in part because they were roasted within the last few days. All were very good. What stuck out in the end was not the beans, but the marketing - especially the way that Pact and Kiss the Hippo both promoted the local farmers. The messaging from all three leaned heavily into domestic, eco-friendly, and agrarian messaging, even if the farms that grew the beans were on another continent. "Most of these small farms have been in the family for generations and we're lucky enough to share their amazing coffee with the Pact community," said Pact's Turton.Did knowing that the Diaz family grew our Kiss the Hippo beans in El Salvador make the coffee taste better? No, probably not. Did it give us something interesting to think about as we took our first sip of coffee? Here's everything we know so far.<h2>The couple's relationship with the press has always been strained</h2>Back in 2016, Harry said he <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-harry-dating-meghan-markle-statement-2016-11">"has rarely taken formal action on the very regular publication of fictional stories"</a> written about him. We won't and can't believe in a world where there is no accountability for this."The case is being privately funded by the couple, and any damages won will be donated to an anti-bullying charity, their lawyers have confirmed.<h2>Markle winning this case alone may not be enough to change things — but freezing out the British tabloids could be</h2>Even following <keyword id="17995" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prince-Harry">Prince Harry</keyword>'s win against Splash News, the British media have continued to manipulate the way the couple are portrayed in headlines. A recent example of this was when they were criticized for flying by private jet to Elton John's home in the South of France, <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-degeneres-pink-defend-meghan-markle-prince-harry-private-jet-2019-8">despite John saying that he paid for the jet to be carbon neutral.</a>It's also worth noting that it's not the first lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday by a member of the royal family. Prince Charles sued the publication for <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2006/dec/21/mailonsunday.pressandpublishing">publishing extracts from his private journal in 2005</a>, after copies of pages were thought to have been leaked by a former staff member. The journal detailed Charles' visits to Hong Kong back in 1997, in which he described Chinese leaders as "appalling old waxworks."Markle has used The Prince of Wales' former lawsuit to support her case against the newspaper, as shown in new legal documents obtained by Insider.However, this doesn't change the fact that the newspaper had no issue with infringing Markle's privacy after already being sued by another royal in a similar incident. Therefore, it's difficult to believe this particular publication will cease actions like this in the future.However, if Markle and Harry make a habit of taking legal action — as Harry's statement implies — this could make the remainder of the press proceed with more caution when it comes to the couple's privacy.Not to mention, the British tabloids now have less access to the couple than ever before. Since the couple are no longer being publicly funded, this means they don't have to participate in the royal rota, a rotating system which allows journalists from Britain's leading newspapers to attend and report on engagements of members of the royal family. Now that Harry and Markle have cut all ties with the British tabloids, these publications will have no access to the couple, and thus little reputability in their reporting about them.<h2>The couple will still have social media trolls to contend with</h2>In his statement, Harry compared Markle's treatment by the press <a href="https://www.insider.com/meghan-markle-suing-british-tabloids-prince-harry-statement-2019-10">to the treatment of his mother, the late Princess Diana.</a>However, one thing Diana didn't have to face was the scrutiny through social media, as pointed out by Joe Little, managing editor at Majesty magazine.<div type="image" title="prince harry princess diana" height="2997" width="1938" msid="75357796" hostid="261"></div>"Something had to happen, because since the Sussexes' wedding Meghan in particular has been criticized a great deal for all manner of things in the tabloid media, both online and in print. On social media there has been much trolling – very unpleasant stuff – and that has made a bad situation even worse," Little told Insider.Former Daily Mirror editor and Guardian columnist Roy Greenslade agrees with this sentiment — even going as far as to say the couple are wasting their time by going after the press. "The press — particularly the tabloid press — is far less powerful now than it was during his mother's era," he told Radio 4's Today programme, according to <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49901047">BBC News. </a>"Is he taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut here? First, the scoreboard:<ul><li>Dow: 15,885.2, -208.3, (-1.3%)</li><li>S&amp;P 500: 1,877.1, -29.8, (-1.6%)</li><li>Nasdaq: 4,518.5, -72.7, (-1.6%)</li><li>WTI crude oil: $29.75, -7.6%</li></ul>And now, the top stories on Monday:<ol><li>We only had one economic data point cross the wires on Monday but fortunately it was exciting report (though bad for Texas). The latest <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dallas-fed-manufacturing-survey-2016-1">manufacturing report from the Dallas Federal Reserve</a> was released Monday with the business activity index falling to a remarkable -34.6, the lowest reading in over six years and another sign that the oil rich state is struggling in the wake of the oil price crash. Expectations for the economy in Texas "weakened notably" in January's survey with one executive saying, "Demand slowed more quickly than is typical in December. Early demand is weaker in January, leading to the belief that growth in 2016 may be elusive."</li><li>A note passed our way from Neil Dutta at Renaissance Macro on Tuesday <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/manufacturing-employment-in-texas-2016-1">highlighted</a> that while much has been made about the loss of manufacturing jobs and the general slowdown seen in the sector over the last year, the impact is really all being felt in Texas. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Renaissance Macro</div></div></div></li><li>And of course when we talk about Texas, again, we're really just talking about oil. Over the weekend The Telegraph's <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/12118594/Saudis-will-not-destroy-the-US-shale-industry.html">Ambrose Evans-Pritchard was out</a> with a report on why the Saudi's will not kill the US shale industry. What stood out on our end was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-shale-oil-contributed-to-oil-crash-2016-1">quick two-sentence quote</a> Evans-Pritchard pulled out of a talk at Davos, with energy expert Daniel Yergin explaining why US shale is in control and traditional oil powers are simply outmatched today. "It takes $10 billion and five years to launch a deep-water project," Yergin said. "It takes $10 million and just 20 days to drill for shale." This is not dissimilar in spirit from <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/only-america-save-oil-market-110700244.html">Akin Oyedele's report out this weekend</a>, citing Citi's Ed Morse, that argued the fate of the oil market is in the hands of the US (read: shale producers). If these more nimble US shale producers simply decline to cut production then there's really no reason to think supply will come down, and as a result, prices should remains stubbornly low. </li><li>The price of oil fell over 7% on Monday to around $29.75, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/crude-oil-bull-market-2016-1">though as the folks over at Bespoke noted</a>, we'd need to see WTI prices fall back below $25.75 to officially enter a new bear market. Of course, the old bear market is more or less still in place - technical definitions be damned - because prices are still near 12-year lows and off about 70% from their highs reached back in June 2014. </li><li>In related commodities news, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-downgrades-caterpillar-to-sell-2016-1">Goldman Sachs downgraded their outlook on shares of Caterpillar</a> - cutting their rating on the stock to "Sell" from "Neutral" - arguing that there's about 13% of downside in the current stock price as the "extended commodity deflation cycle" continues to take its toll on Caterpillar's customers. Shares of Caterpillar fell about 5% on Monday.</li><li>Twitter shares also took it on the chin on Monday, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-shares-following-news-of-executive-shakeup-2016-1">falling about 4%</a> after a series of reports out on Sunday detailed that several high-level people would be leaving the company. The company's head of product, head of engineering, and head of media all departed in a big shakeup that will also see the company appoint two new people to the board of directors in the coming days. The best part: Business Insider has been told at least one of these people will be a "big media name." So we'll see how big, I guess. </li><li>In tech earnings news, Apple is reporting earnings tomorrow after the closing bell and this is the quarter that we're all supposed to be scared of. Business Insider executive editor Jay Yarow - fresh off a stint in Davos - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-earnings-preview-2016-1">has the full preview here</a>, but the thing to know is that iPhone sales look likely to decline when compared to the same quarter last year. That will be the first time this happens (if it happens, of course) in the product's history. Now, obviously, iPhone sales were not going to increase forever, but if these forecasts come to pass it isn't much of a leap to assert that this will in fact be the start of a new era for the company. </li><li>Speaking of things that seem to go up forever, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-cirp-amazon-prime-numbers-2016-1">Amazon Prime memberships now total 54 million</a> according to the latest report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. This is a 35% increase from the same time last year, though since Amazon itself doesn't disclose membership totals for its $99-per-year loyalty program, we're not 100% sure. Amazon reports earnings on Thursday, and while its Prime service is extremely convenient and the company is often thought of as a retailer, the big story at Amazon now is the growth of its Web Services business. </li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/baupost-group-2015-results-2016-1">Seth Klarman had a bad year in 2015</a>. Klarman's notoriously secretive Baupost Group posted a "mid-single-digit decline" as Klarman tells it in an investor letter, though a separate update seen by Business Insider's Julia La Roche puts some numbers on that: the fund's public investments portfolio fell 6.7% while the private investments gained 2.4%. The average hedge fund fell 3.6% last year.</li><li>But of course the real interesting part of these letters is not the performance figures but what these hedge funds types have to say about the world. Klarman, for his part, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/seth-klarman-on-unicorns-2016-1">is worried about unicorns</a>. "A voracious appetite for tech startups has driven prices sky-high, giving rise to the term 'unicorn,' meaning privately held firms worth $1 billion or more," Klarman wrote. "In today's overheated environment, 'unicorns' are no longer a rare breed: there were an estimated 143 extant at year-end, up from 45 two years ago." Klarman added that these unicorns are awfully hungry, requiring tons of cash just to feed the beast and enable a chance at the spectacular growth rate needed to justify these valuations. As a result, Klarman writes, "Recently there have been downward revisions in the valuations of several of the unicorns held by major mutual funds, a sign, perhaps, that excesses in that sector are in the process of being corrected, that the herd is about to be thinned."</li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blood-in-the-water-90-of-the-billion-dollar-unicorn-startups-are-in-trouble-2016-1">This is what the people in Davos were saying, too</a>. </li><li>Another investment that has a less exciting name but is also making people nervous is high-yield debt, also known as junk bonds. And reportedly junk bond investors are now set to learn more about these assets. A <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-25/junk-bond-investors-to-get-lessons-on-covenants-as-risks-mount">report from Bloomberg</a> on Monday said that junk investors in Europe are set to attend a series of seminars in February that will give investors more information about the protections they have in the event the company they're invested in begins to face financial distress. These seminars will specifically deal with covenants, which is basically the agreement made between a borrower and a lender. A lot of the stuff contained in covenants, it seems, isn't fully understood by investors (or else why would there be seminars about how to understand them!). So I guess going through all the paperwork isn't, like, absolutely required or encouraged or expected before investing. And so here we are. </li><li>Bucking recent trends, it seems like BlackRock's clients are not worried about bond market liquidity even though the biggest thing people have been worried about has been bond market liquidity. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/liquidity">Or just liquidity generally</a>. Either way. A <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-25/blackrock-sees-clients-shifting-to-illiquid-assets-from-stocks">Bloomberg report on Monday said</a> more than half of the 170 respondents to a recent BlackRock survey indicated the firm's institutional investors were building positions in real estate and private credit in an effort to generate higher returns and combat market volatility. Which, sure, fine.
