Tata Motors dominates the EV car market in December with Tiago leading the charge

<ul><li>Shares of <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword> surged almost 4% on Monday as the automaker has now become the second largest car seller in India.</li><li>Tata Motors has surpassed <keyword id="596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyundai" source="Orion">Hyundai</keyword> in terms of sales growth in December.</li><li>It is also the highest ever monthly sales for the Mumbai-based car manufacturer in December 2021.</li></ul>Tata Motors’ shares are on a high on the first day of trading this year, with its share price rising as much as 4% on excitement of the company achieving the tag of the ‘second largest car maker in the country’ beating Hyundai. <br /><br />The Mumbai-based company has surpassed Hyundai, who was the second largest auto seller until now, in terms of car sales in December. <br /><br />With the likes of Nexon, Tiago, Tigor and Harrier and several others, the automaker has recorded the highest ever monthly sales in December.<br /><table style="border-width: initial; Tata Motors’ stock at nearly two-month high after selling more cars than Hyundai in December

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Winter is generally a time when convertibles sell slowly, but the <keyword id="1695974" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mazda-Miata">Mazda Miata</keyword> experienced strong sales in December 2020.</li><li>Miata sales increased by 58.1% between December 2019 and December 2020 and increased by 13.6% overall between 2019 and 2020.</li><li>This was potentially due to people having extra disposable income lying around and extra dealership incentives, according to <keyword id="49628" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="analysts">analysts</keyword> from iSeeCars, Edmunds, the Cox Automotive.</li></ul><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-mx-5-miata-club-manual-specs-horsepower-sports-car-2020-7">Mazda Miata</a> has long been recognized as <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/news/mazda-produces-900000th-mx-5-recognized-worlds-best-selling-sports-car-28207/">the best-selling sports car</a> and it's easy to see why. Lightweight, fun, and cheap, the Miata possesses the three magic ingredients of what makes a sports car excellent. </p><p>True, Miatas don't sell in volume like trucks and SUVs do, but Miata sales actually managed to be positive last year over 2019 sales numbers, thus reversing a generally negative sales trend since 2017.</p><h2><strong>The numbers don't lie</strong></h2><p>In particular, <a href="https://insidemazda.mazdausa.com/press-release/mazda-reports-december-and-full-year-2020-sales-results/">Mazda's end-of-year sales data</a> yielded an interesting trend: 2020 saw <keyword id="116215" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mazda">Mazda</keyword>'s highest December Miata sales since 2016, the model year of the newest generation of the car.</p><p>According to Mazda's own sales data, the automaker sold 706 Miatas in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/news.mazdausa.com/2017-01-04-mazda-reports-december-2016-full-year-2016-sales*assets_117:19611__;Iw!!Gh9pqc0J0AYYLQ!bTHED-sjwpqGlLZqrA4ARccybY4ifxc4azlZVN2QSq2lpkRvcv5bE0J3JyZ2brkIQPlV1uk$">December 2015</a>. That number rose slightly to 733 Miatas sold in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/news.mazdausa.com/2018-01-03-mazda-reports-december-2017-and-full-year-2017-sales*assets_117:19281__;Iw!!Gh9pqc0J0AYYLQ!bTHED-sjwpqGlLZqrA4ARccybY4ifxc4azlZVN2QSq2lpkRvcv5bE0J3JyZ2brkIBcewMj0$">December 2016</a>, fell to 493 in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/news.mazdausa.com/2019-01-03-Mazda-Reports-December-and-Full-Year-2018-Sales-Results*assets_117:19142__;Iw!!Gh9pqc0J0AYYLQ!bTHED-sjwpqGlLZqrA4ARccybY4ifxc4azlZVN2QSq2lpkRvcv5bE0J3JyZ2brkIz_UsCHg$">December 2017</a>, rose very slightly again to 511 in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/news.mazdausa.com/2020-01-03-Mazda-Reports-December-Sales-Results-and-Full-Year-2019-Sales__;!!Gh9pqc0J0AYYLQ!bTHED-sjwpqGlLZqrA4ARccybY4ifxc4azlZVN2QSq2lpkRvcv5bE0J3JyZ2brkIhQ1ctJo$">December 2018</a>, dropped to 439 in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/insidemazda.mazdausa.com/press-release/mazda-reports-december-and-full-year-2020-sales-results/__;!!Gh9pqc0J0AYYLQ!bTHED-sjwpqGlLZqrA4ARccybY4ifxc4azlZVN2QSq2lpkRvcv5bE0J3JyZ2brkIFRv3kgg$">December 2019</a>, and increased pretty significantly to 694 Miatas in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/insidemazda.mazdausa.com/press-release/mazda-reports-december-and-full-year-2020-sales-results/__;!!Gh9pqc0J0AYYLQ!bTHED-sjwpqGlLZqrA4ARccybY4ifxc4azlZVN2QSq2lpkRvcv5bE0J3JyZ2brkIFRv3kgg$">December 2020</a>.</p><p>As Insider has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/car-auction-industry-accelerated-years-over-covid-era-digital-shift-2020-11">previously reported</a>, many people with disposable income who were forced to stay home this year because of the pandemic didn't spend the money on vacations or trips like they otherwise would have. Instead, many turned to buying a fun car, such as a sports car or something vintage. </p><h2>Analysts weigh in</h2><p>"We've seen sports car and convertible sales and prices spike over the past 12 months," Karl Brauer, <a href="http://iseecars.com/">iSeeCars.com</a> executive analyst, told Insider. "It's a reflection of people wanting to take back some level of control in their life during the pandemic, and many of them want to do this in a fun, life-affirming way.</p><p>"It doesn't get much more fun and life-affirming than buying and driving a convertible, especially for consumers who have always wanted one but couldn't justify it on a rational level. The past year has led plenty of consumers to redefine what's rational."</p><p>iSeeCars also reported that used Miata sales declined 29.4% in December 2020 over December 2019, with a 13% increase in average price. </p><p>"The December decline in [used] sales represents people with Miatas holding onto them, and the higher prices reflect the lower supply and the increased demand for these vehicles," an iSeeCars representative added. </p><p>The agency pointed to a <a href="https://www.iseecars.com/cars-for-sale#section=studies&amp;study=used-car-prices&amp;v=202011v=202011">study</a> it conducted in October, which found that convertibles experienced the biggest price increase across all segments.</p><p>An <a href="https://www.edmunds.com/">Edmunds</a> spokesperson agreed, saying its analysts also saw a trend of consumers "opting for pricier and sportier vehicles during the pandemic," though they couldn't say for sure what caused it. The person said since roadsters already sell in such low volume, "anything from good incentive programs or inventory shipments could easily move 100 or so units."</p><p>A spokesperson with <a href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/">Cox Automotive</a>, which owns Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book, said Miatas aren't the only convertibles buyers flocked to. The Fiat 124 Spider and Porsche Boxster both experienced stronger December 2020 sales than in previous years. </p><p>"It is possible that disposable income has been reallocated to sportster/roadster type cars due to cancellations in recreational activities," they told Insider. "Additionally, it seems that incentives have gone up for some models like the [Fiat] 124 Spider, [Lexus] LC, [Mazda] Miata, and [Mercedes-Benz] SLC compared to 2019, which may be drawing in the additional sales."</p><p>They sent along this chart outlining the increased incentives:</p><div type="image" title="Dealership incentives of sports cars" height="439" width="2288" msid="80189732" hostid="261"></div><p>Though it seems counterintuitive to buy a sports car in December in the US - most people don't equate cold weather with convertibles - it might actually be the best time to do it. </p><p>"As December rolls around, some dealers may start sweating their annual sales goals," <a href="https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/best-times-to-buy-a-car#The-Month-of-December">US News</a> explained. "If it doesn't look like they'll meet those numbers, you may be able to play this for a great deal.</p><p>"If a dealer can hit annual sales goals, there may be a bonus in play for them. This makes it very attractive for them to let a car roll off the lot with very favorable terms for the shopper."</p><p>But whatever the terms for December's Miata buyers, we hear they took home a pretty good - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-mx-5-miata-club-manual-specs-horsepower-sports-car-2020-7">and pretty timeless</a> - car.</p>

Mazda's Miata sports car triumphed in 2020 thanks to dealer incentives and buyers needing a pandemic escape

The gross domestic product (GDP) figures for the three-month period of October to December 2018, came in today (Feb 28, 2019).<br /><br />The Indian GDP grew by 6.6%, the slowest in five quarters. In fact, even a growth of 6.6% seems to be on the optimistic side, given that this is not in line with the underlying economic fundamentals, which can be measured through high-frequency economic indicators like car sales, two-wheeler sales, tourist arrivals, railway freight movement, etc. <br /><br />Let’s try and get some sense of what the economic indicators looked like in the three month period between October to December 2018. <br /><br />In this piece, the yearly growth of 15 high frequency economic indicators has been looked at. These indicators include (and as can be seen from the accompanying table, which is in two parts) indicators like car sales, two-wheeler sales, commercial vehicle sales, non-oil exports, non-oil non-gold non-silver imports, revenue earning rail freight, among others.<br /><br />The performance of 11 out of the 15 economic indicators was much better during the period October to December 2017 than it was in October to December 2018. This basically means that the yearly growth of most economic indicators was better during the same period.<br /><br />In simple English, what this means is that the <keyword id="6356076" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-economy">Indian economy</keyword> has slowed down during the last quarter. Will this reflect in the government GDP numbers? That is something we will come to know later this week. <br /><br />These indicators are real time economic indicators and not a theoretical construct like the GDP number. Also, in a scenario where India grew by 8.2% during 2016-2017, the year of demonetisation, it makes more sense to trust real time economic indicators more than the GDP number declared by the government. <br /><br />Let’s take a closer look at some of these indicators. Take car sales, the most cited indicator among these indicators. During the period October to December 2018, car sales fell by 0.79% in comparison to October to December 2017. <br />Why are car sales important? That’s because they have been an important indicator of how urban India is feeling about its economic prospects. At the end of the day, no one is forcing an individual to buy a car. She buys a car only when she feels that she is in a position to service the EMI on the car loan taken to buy the car or make a down-payment. <br /><br />The fact that car sales have been falling tells us that urban India isn’t really feeling strong about its future economic prospects. <br /><br />Car sales also have very strong forward and backward linkages. When cars sell well, there is greater demand for steel, rubber, paint, glass, batteries etc. These are the backward linkages. A whole host of sectors do well, when cars sell well. The vice versa is also true. <br /><br />As far as forward linkages of car sales are concerned, a growth in car sales leads to an increase demand for loans, servicing centres as well as energy consumption. As we can see from the accompanying table, consumption of petroleum products went up by just 2.21% during the period October to December 2018, in comparison to a year earlier. <br />Other than cars, a slowdown in scooter sales between July and December 2018, also tells us that urban India is not feeling too comfortable about its economic prospects. <br /><br />While scooter sales growth remained slow, the motorcycle sales growth seems to be on a recovery path. <br />As far as consumer demand is concerned, non-oil non-gold non-silver imports, which are a very good indicator of consumer demand, grew by just 0.35% between October and December 2018. <br />Exports remained weak during the period. Non-oil exports, which tend to benefit a large number of companies in comparison to oil exports, where the benefits are concentrated, grew by just 1.19%. Revenue earning rail freight saw a slight improvement in growth at 5.92%. <br /><br />Commercial vehicle sales grew by 6.7%, the slowest in six quarters. A fast growth in commercial sales indicates a robust activity on the infrastructure and industrial front. This is seen as a lead economic indicator of industrial as well as infrastructure activity. This is also borne out by data from Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy. During October to December 2018, the new projects fell by 24.14%. Completed projects fell by 8.35% and the stalled projects went up by 246.89%. <br /><br />All this comes together in the form of a major slowdown in central government revenue receipts, which grew by just 0.48% during the period, with the government also feeling the heat of the economic slowdown. <br /><br />All these economic indicators come together to tell us that the Indian economy has slowed down during the period October to December 2018. Whether this is captured in the GDP data which will be released on February 28, remains to be seen. In this scenario, even an economic growth of 6.6% doesn’t seem believable. <br /><br />In the recent past, the Indian GDP data has become more or less a joke. Why even an economic growth of 6.6% is not believable

This Could Be The Best December For Auto Sales In A Decade

Two drivers were killed in this crash as police reported hundreds of car crashes and accidents across Germany due to icy streets.</p></div><p></p></div></div>People in Europe are buying more new cars than at any point in the last five years, but Volkswagen is missing out on the action as<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/heres-what-volkswagen-did-and-how-they-got-caught-2015-9"> the effects of September's emissions scandal </a>continue to bite.</p><p><a href="http://www.acea.be/press-releases/article/passenger-car-registrations-9.3-in-2015-16.6-in-december">Data released by European auto industry body the ACEA on Friday</a> shows that 16.6% more cars were registered in the EU during December than in the previous month, and across the whole of 2015, people bought 9.3% more cars than in 2014.</p><p>Of the 1.1 million new cars bought in the final month of 2015, by the far the biggest sellers were cars manufactured by the Volkswagen group. </p><p>This might sound like positive news, but actually VW's market share has slumped from 25% in December 2014, to just 22.5% at the end of last year. On top of this, every single one of the Volkswagen group's brands lost market share.</p><p>VW itself lost the biggest chunk of its market share, with 0.9% of sales disappearing, while other Volkswagen owned brands like Audi, Seat, and Skoda all lost roughly 0.5% of their share of sales.</p><p>What's even worse for VW is that compared to all the other major European brands, it only managed to increase overall sales by a tiny margin. Volkswagen's emissions scandal is still wreaking havoc with the company

<p>Analysts predict sales came in at an annualized pace of 16.00 million units, down from 16.31 million in November.</p>
<p>"After a strong end to November over Black Friday weekend lifted sales for the month to six-year high of 16.3 million units annualized, initial mid-month industry surveys observed some slowing in sales in the first half of December, reflecting the pull forward into November as well as a drag from December winter storm," said Morgan Stanley's Ted Wieseman. "Renewed upside was expected in the second half of the month, but overall December sales may show a 5% pullback after jumping 8% in November."</p>

Chrysler Sales Climb Just 5.7% In December

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span> Justin Sullivan/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Americans need new cars.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The automakers who sell cars and trucks in the US are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/auto-sales-dec-2015-2016-1">reporting December sales throughout the day on Tuesday</a> and its a nail biter.</p><p>The industry was on a tear in 2015, running at or above a torrid 18-million sales pace for much of the year. </p><p>If the full-year total comes in at 17.5 million, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/its-looking-like-the-us-auto-market-could-narrowly-miss-an-epic-number-in-2015-2015-12">then it will be the best year ever for the US market</a>, topping a sales record in 2000, when 17.4 million vehicles rolled off dealer lots.</p><p>We won't know if the 2000 record will be broken until all the automakers report their numbers, but its an important target for the US industry, which saw sales plunge below 10 million in the depths of Great Recession. <br /><br />Strong December sales and a record 2015 will prove that the car business has fully recovered from the worst chapter in its history.</p><p>Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg, both at consumer auto information resources such as Kelley Blue Book, True Car, and Edmunds and at big investment banks like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, are pegging the December sales pace in the high 17-million to low 18-million range.<br /><br />It'll be close, though, and the overall record might require some blockbuster results from smaller companies.<br /><br /> The biggest carmakers to report so far are falling short of growth estimates. At Ford, for example, U.S. sales rose 8% in December to 239,242 vehicles, bringing its full year total to 2.6 million (its highest since 2006). Analysts expected an increase of 11%. GM's sales growth in December was also lighter than expected.<br /><br />Ford and GM are down about 3% as of midday in New York. The tightrope the auto industry demands that car makers capitalize on the boom while they can but avoid the errors of the past. </p><p>They need to avoid putting too much money on the table in incentive spending, in an effort to capture market share. And they need to invest in research and development now to avoid losing consumers' attention later with lackluster models. The US auto industry is on the verge of doing something it's never done before

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <a href="http://app.quotemedia.com/data/downloadFiling?webmasterId=101533&amp;ref=115136521&amp;type=HTML&amp;formType=8-K&amp;dateFiled=2020-07-24&amp;cik=0001657853&amp;CK=1657853&amp;symbol=0001657853&amp;companyName=Hertz+Global+Holdings%2C+Inc.me=Hertz+Global+Holdings%2C+Inc.">filing</a> with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission said that <keyword id="187854" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hertz">Hertz</keyword> has until December 31, 2020, to get rid of 182,521 <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>.</li><li>This is part of a $650-million temporary deal between Hertz and its lenders, reported <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/hertz-reaches-650-million-deal-tied-to-fleet-reduction-11595361162">The Wall Street Journal</a>.</li><li>It's unclear how Hertz will "dispose of" the cars, but they might appear on the company's own car sales website.</li></ul><p>As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, rental car giant Hertz will have to offload nearly 200,000 cars by the end of this year, according to a recent <a href="http://app.quotemedia.com/data/downloadFiling?webmasterId=101533&amp;ref=115136521&amp;type=HTML&amp;formType=8-K&amp;dateFiled=2020-07-24&amp;cik=0001657853&amp;CK=1657853&amp;symbol=0001657853&amp;companyName=Hertz+Global+Holdings%2C+Inc.me=Hertz+Global+Holdings%2C+Inc.">United States Securities and Exchange Commission filing</a>.</p><p>Hertz, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hertz-filing-for-bankruptcy-as-early-as-this-weekend-report-2020-5">which filed for bankruptcy in May</a>, must "dispose of" at least 182,521 leased cars by December 31, 2020, the filing reads. This is part of a $650-million temporary deal the company made with a creditor group, reported <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/hertz-reaches-650-million-deal-tied-to-fleet-reduction-11595361162">The Wall Street Journal</a>.</p><p>The deal requires Hertz to pay its asset-backed securities lenders $650 million of rent in equal installments per month from July to December. An unnamed person familiar with the deal told The Journal's Becky Yerak that this amounts to "about half of what Hertz is contractually obligated to pay." </p><p>They also said that "Hertz is also trying to arrange up to about $2 billion in financing to help it get through chapter 11." </p><p>The Journal reported that the settlement is tentative and still needs to be approved in court. </p><p>But, under it, Hertz will have to get rid of 182,521 leased cars, which will leave it with approximately 310,000 leased cars. Hertz will be allowed to retain $900 from each car it sells, according to The Journal. The rest of the money made from selling the cars will go toward repaying the lenders. </p><p>It's not clear how the cars will be sold — perhaps they'll be available through <a href="https://www.hertzcarsales.com/">Hertz's own car sales website</a> — but this could be good news for people shopping for a used car. Used car sales have <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-autos-used/bargain-conscious-americans-lift-used-car-sales-in-the-coronavirus-economy-idUSKBN23C1FK">rebounded well during the COVID-19 pandemic</a> while new-car sales are lagging.</p><p>In May, before the bankruptcy announcement, Business Insider reported that the rental car giant <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hertz-selling-chevy-corvettes-as-it-prepares-for-bankruptcy-2020-5">put more than 20 Chevrolet Corvette Z06s up for sale at steeply discounted prices</a>. Hertz must offload almost 200,000 cars by the end of 2020 as part of its bankruptcy deal

The consensus is for light vehicle sales to decrease to 16.0 million SAAR in December (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate) from 16.3 million SAAR in November." </p>
<p>Historically, car sales line up nicely with employment, which makes a lot of sense as unemployed people don't buy cars. 2013 shaped up to be a much stronger year for car sales than expected, and the numbers reported by auto companies today will be important to watch.</p>

Pay Attention To Car Sales Numbers Today

<p>Chrysler and Ford <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-auto-sales-december-2013-2014-1">were in the green</a>, but both missed analyst expectations. GM tanked 6.3% when analysts were looking for a 1.5% gain.</p>

The auto industry sold more cars in the US in 2015 than ever before

Republicans have proposed capping the property tax, state and local income tax, and sales tax deduction to a total of $10,000. So, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/prepay-property-taxes-before-trump-tax-plan-passes-2017-12">prepaying next year's property taxes</a> before the end of 2017 could save some taxpayers significant cash.</p><p>There's another interesting tax-hack that many people might not know: if you're planning buy a car soon, do it before December 31.</p><p>Purchasing a car this December might be a smart idea for taxpayers in states with no state income taxes who itemize and claim the sales tax deduction, according to TaxAudit.</p><p>And it's not just for cars. Sales tax is <a href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/taxes/year-end-tax-planning/">deductible</a> on a number of vehicle purchases, including motor homes, trucks, and even boats and planes.</p><h2>Vehicle registration fees are also deductible</h2><p>If you buy a car now, you could deduct vehicle registration fees paid before the end of the year, which are also likely to be axed under the new bill.</p><p>Annual car registration fees might be partially deductible on your federal income taxes, although that's only under certain circumstances.
