The following has been edited for length and clarity.I was laid off from my job as a senior technical sourcer at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-make-money-driving-for-doordash-gig-economy-rewards-program-2023-12">DoorDash</a> in August 2022 and decided to take a break.I saw it as a chance to disconnect after a difficult period of supporting people in tech who lost their jobs in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doordash-cuts-1000-workers-costly-expenses-memo-2022-11">mass layoffs</a> and caring for my mom, who was battling cancer.Once she was better, I knew I needed to look after myself and unplug, so I traveled to El Salvador, Miami, and Aruba for a few months.<h2 id="bdcb20f1-98ba-462e-b7b2-9a526410e333">I got in a bad car crash, and it would take a year to recover</h2>When I returned home to Orange County, California, in March last year, I got into a bad car crash. I was driving on the freeway and saw a car speeding behind me. Seconds later, he rear-ended my car. It was really frightening, and I felt shocked but also lucky to be alive.The next morning, my body was in a lot of pain. I couldn't walk for three weeks and had a bunch of injuries.It was a really difficult time because I felt like I lost my independence and needed to rely on others for help. I started to get into a state of victim mentality. I barely left my house for two months and was experiencing depression.Because I had an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in my knee, I started getting some physical therapy, acupuncture, and seeing a chiropractor who told me it would take a year to recover. My world shattered when he told me that, and I felt hopeless.I didn't feel able to work, and luckily, I had savings to fall back on, so I tried to focus on my recovery instead and use the time to upskill. I didn't fully recover until this summer.<h2 id="358f78e7-5712-4c28-99aa-f5a8e57c9af4">Webinars and LinkedIn courses introduced me to AI</h2>During that time, I thought of Kobe Bryant. In the NBA, he suffered a knee injury, yet he had a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kobe-bryant-black-mamba-nickname-2022-6">"Mamba mentality,"</a> pushing himself to get through it and come back stronger.I started watching webinars on AI to work on my personal development to prepare for future work. I signed up for LinkedIn Learning courses, attended AI conferences, read up on everything happening with AI, and continued to learn.I thought, "What can I do now to help me have a stronger foundation?"I remember when I spoke to an Apple manager who had offered me a job in the past and told me, "It's harder to get into Apple than it is to get into MIT or Harvard, but you'll be hiring all the Harvard/MIT people, and to get in, they will have to go through you."That sparked an idea to look at what AI programs those institutions offered. I set my sights on studying at MIT and applied for its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://professional.mit.edu/course-catalog/professional-certificate-program-innovation-technology">professional certificate program</a> in innovation and technology.<h2 id="ea67378f-a2b0-477f-ba37-8e394b9ba902">Getting onto an MIT program was a dream come true</h2>I started crying when I learned I had been accepted into the program in June because it was a dream come true. The course requires students to complete 16 or more days of "short programs" at MIT over three years. I funded the program from my savings.I started the course in July. Over the next three years, I plan to use what I learn at MIT to build a career coaching business that uses AI and neuropsychology to help individuals upskill.I've also applied for AI recruiter roles while building my business. Hopefully, I can work and support myself while studying and building my business.<h2 id="d9f69f85-0b80-4c4c-8ae4-7848cd43f6c8">I'm glad I was laid off</h2>If it wasn't for losing my job and the car crash, I don't think I would have reached this point in my life where I feel so strong. It showed me that being resilient and pursuing my goals despite adversity paid off.I'm grateful for the dark time I went through, even though it was painful, because it's helped me realize what I want for my professional life, and I've turned it into a positive.

Russian troops are crashing into their own anti-tank barriers and dying, pro-Putin hardliners say

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In May, a huge chunk of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/transastra-wins-nasa-contract-pick-up-space-trash-with-bags-2023-9">space debris</a> crash landed in the mountains of North Carolina.</li><li>After reviewing the incident, NASA confirmed that it came from a SpaceX Dragon Capsule.</li></ul>NASA has confirmed that a hunk of space junk as big as a car hood found in North Carolina belonged to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-launched-capsule-avocados-ants-robotic-arm-on-board-2021-8">SpaceX Dragon Capsule</a>, according to an agency <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/Justin__Berger/status/1803797711692427743/photo/1">statement</a> shared on X.The Dragon Capsule is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-elon-musk-starship-shred-almost-lose-fin-2024-6">reusable spacecraft</a> that carries astronauts and cargo to-and-from the International Space Station. But a part of it, called the trunk, isn't reusable and is discarded just before the capsule returns to Earth.That trunk is what ended up crash-landing on a trail at a mountaintop resort just outside Asheville in May. "It was just wild. It was crazy-looking," groundskeeper Justin Clontz who stumbled on the large debris, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.space.com/space-debris-spacex-crew-7-reentry-north-carolina">Space.com</a>.No one was injured from the impact. But <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dish-network-fined-first-ever-fcc-enforcement-against-space-junk-2023-10">the space junk</a> shouldn't have been there in the first place. NASA said in its statement that evaluations of Dragon's initial design showed that it should fully break up in Earth's atmosphere. And another landed in a farmer's field in Saskatchewan, Canada in April.It's not just SpaceX junk falling to Earth. A two-pound piece of debris slightly smaller than a soda can fell from the International Space Station in March, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-international-space-station-debris-hit-florida-house-investigation-2024-4">crashing through a family's roof in Florida</a>. The family is now suing NASA over the incident.These series of recent accidents underscore how difficult it can be to predict and model when space debris will, and will not, burn up in Earth's atmosphere. Improving these models is more important than ever.<h2 id="bbd3fdd1-7f61-4a4c-9c1c-e99e93c93c65">Humans are launching more into space than ever before</h2><div type="image" title="Graph of the number of objects launched into space by year" height="2400" width="3400" msid="111468430" hostid="261"></div>Space junk has been falling out of the sky since the 1960s, but humans are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rocket-satellite-metals-polluting-earth-stratosphere-2023-10">launching more stuff into space</a> than ever before. According to the site "Our World in Data", in 2023, a record-breaking 2,664 objects, including satellites, spacecraft, landers, and more, were sent to, or beyond, Earth's orbit."Once those things die, then they're just abandoned. It's just like orbiting trash. And then it's up to mother nature to figure out how the thing re-enters," Moriba Jah, associate professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin, told BI.Jah is referring to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-rocket-failed-stage-crashed-reentry-earth-uncontrolled-pacific-ocean-2022-1">uncontrolled re-entries</a>. It's when space debris free-falls toward Earth with no one controlling its course.Modeling uncontrolled re-entires involves a lot of uncertainty and is, therefore, more complex than modeling controlled re-entries, which usually involve rockets that guide the debris' trajectory, ensuring it lands in a safe area, like the ocean.<div type="image" title="An illustration of thousands of dots around the Earth shows the density of satellites in the sky." height="1024" width="1024" msid="111468433" hostid="261"></div>"For uncontrolled stuff, all bets are off, because you don't necessarily know what the orientation of the object is as it hits the atmosphere, or how it's tumbling," said Jah, who partners with ServicePlan Innovation on Space Trash Signs to study and visualize the consequences of space pollution.Uncontrolled re-entry typically happens to smaller chunks of space debris that are expected to break up in the atmosphere before ever reaching the ground — like the Dragon Capsule's trunk.Even though this space debris is relatively small compared to, say, car-sized satellites, it's not harmless. They're moving at thousands of miles per hour before impact.If the piece of debris that crash landed outside Asheville, North Carolina in May had landed on a person, it would have certainly killed them, Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and leading space debris expert, told BI.<div type="image" title="Debris from the SpaceX Dragon Capsule sitting in a grassy field with a blue sky and mountains in the background" height="1168" width="1558" msid="111468426" hostid="261"></div>While the chances of space debris hitting a person are astronomically low, a 2022 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature, estimated there's about a 10% chance one or more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/falling-space-junk-spacex-nasa-china-foreshadow-increasing-injury-risk-2022-8">people will be struck</a> within a 10-year period.<h2 id="e2d6204c-a6d6-4427-84d8-55cbbb3d7714">How to reduce the risk of falling space debris</h2>NASA wrote in its statement that it'll use the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/transastra-wins-nasa-contract-pick-up-space-trash-with-bags-2023-9">debris recovered</a> from the mountaintop resort in North Carolina to improve debris modeling.Another option that NASA should consider, McDowell said, was to reduce the number of uncontrolled re-entries and use controlled de-orbit even for small space objects."Then you know exactly when and where it's gonna come down," McDowell said.Right now, controlled re-entries are relatively uncommon. Roughly 200 to 400 objects big enough to be tracked re-enter Earth's atmosphere each year, and only a handful of them are controlled re-entries, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://aerospace.org/article/space-debris-101">The Aerospace Corporation</a>.Making controlled re-entry the status quo would require new laws, and federal funding to help NASA and companies like SpaceX clean up their junk, Jah said.The Federal Government is responsible for approving space launches but doesn't hold launching entities like NASA or SpaceX responsible for disposing of objects safely. That needs to change, Jah added."Working in space always carries some uncertainty, but NASA works to ensure its operations are safe for the public, and it strives to continuously improve processes," NASA wrote in a statement to BI.SpaceX did not respond to BI's request for comment.

The following has been edited for length and clarity.When I was hired as Ryan Gosling's stunt driver for "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryan-gosling-steven-spielberg-the-fall-guy-2024-3">The Fall Guy</a>," the film's stunt coordinator gave me one big objective.He wanted me to beat the Guinness World Record for the most cannon rolls performed in a car, which is where a device below a vehicle shoots toward the ground and propels it to flip over.I only needed eight rolls to beat the previous record held by Adam Kirley, Daniel Craig's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stuntman-the-dark-knight-star-wars-what-its-like-2023-11">stunt double</a> for 2006's "Casino Royale," but it's much harder than it sounds.The stunt took months of planning, refitting cars, and test runs to attempt the rolls correctly and safely.On filming day on a sandy beach in Sydney, our first attempt was unsuccessful and wrecked the car. This left us with only one car and one more shot at beating the record.On the second attempt, I was strapped tight into the containment seat of a modified Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was for my safety, but I felt claustrophobic and hot. I was dripping in sweat and feeling dehydrated as I waited 30 minutes for the final adjustments to be finished.<div type="image" title="A picture of the filming of the cannon roll flip" height="835" width="1113" msid="109812341" hostid="261" sizebytes="44854"></div>I wanted to get out of the car by the time I got the all clear to start driving onto the beach, but I had already committed so much time to this stunt. I accelerated to 80 miles per hour, the cannon kicked in, and the car was propelled into the roll.Having 16 G-force pressing down on me as I spun repeatedly was so uncomfortable and I quickly lost count of how many times the car rolled over as I started to feel dizzy.When the car stopped, I had lost all sense of direction and had to let my arms hang out to realize I was upside down.I had a feeling that we'd achieved the record this time, but I felt really good once I found out we had broken the record with eight-and-a-half rolls. The movie is the first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-fall-guy-summer-movie-season-blockbuster-marvel-superhero-fatigue-2024-5">blockbuster</a> of the summer, when audiences flock to cinemas for family and action movies. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryan-gosling-im-just-ken-oscars-emma-stone-reunion-2024-3">Ryan Gosling</a> stars as Colt Seavers, a jaded stuntman who tries to save missing actor Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) to win back his former lover (Emily Blunt). The movie is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryan-gosling-movie-the-fall-guy-stunts-2024-2">homage to stunt performers</a> whose work is often overlooked in the industry.As one of Gosling's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chris-hemsworths-stunt-double-what-my-job-is-like-2020-10">stunt doubles</a>, I spent a lot of time with him, and that man has the most fun. He was keen to learn from me and his other stunt doubles to prepare for his role, and I even trained him to do cool drifts and slides with cars.A big chunk of my time was also spent planning how we would carry out the stunts for the movie. The film's stunt coordinator, Chris O'Hara, who is a friend of mine, called me before production started in Australia to work out how to do the beach cannon roll, and we spent months figuring out the perfect conditions and equipment to complete that stunt safely.We also spent a lot of time planning another major stunt in the movie's climax. In this scene, Colt and Ryder drive off a ramp, launching their car 80 feet into the air.For this stunt, we brought in a trophy truck with suspension to handle a big jump and built a 16-foot-high ramp on the ground. For the tests, we started at a 75-foot jump distance and pushed back the end goal until we reached our 200-foot jump target.When the truck was set up to handle a 200-foot jump, it was difficult to drive because the shock valve was very stiff and bouncy. This process took around 100 trial jumps before we were ready for the real thing.<div type="image" title="A side-by-side picture of the car jump." height="1080" width="1440" msid="109812346" hostid="261" sizebytes="53532"></div>The real jump was on a 40-foot-high cliff edge, so we had to raise the ramp to the correct position. After scheduling delays due to rain and high winds, which could affect the jump, we finally filmed the stunt on a slightly breezy morning as the sun rose. The wind was starting to pick up, so we knew we might not get another chance at doing the jump.The film crew's helicopter went to its position, the car was lined up to the ramp and then I was off. Driving up to the ramp, I had to reach the perfect speed. Too fast and my car could nose dive and flip when it landed. Too slow and I wouldn't make the landing pad.Once I hit the ramp, I couldn't see where I was landing. I was just a passenger to the elements, flying through the air and waiting to see where I landed.Soon enough, the tires hit the ground, and I felt the same exhilarating feeling I had as a motorcycle racer before I became a stunt performer.Though doing incredible stunts like these may make one feel invincible, I must always be focused and sharp to avoid mistakes. Getting complacent can be dangerous.But completing two huge stunt scenes felt like a huge weight off my shoulders. Now, everyone can see the fruits of my hard work.

It may do so once again as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> prepares to use the studio lot to tell another story: that Tesla is more than just a car company.On Thursday, the billionaire Tesla boss is set to take <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-robotaxi-event-warner-bros-discovery-studio-report-2024-9">center stage at the historic site</a> in California to host Robotaxi Day. The long-awaited event — originally scheduled for August — is meant to give weight to the electric vehicle maker's pitch that it is a tech company first and a car company second.More and more, Musk has been positioning Tesla as a company not just focused on accelerating the clean energy transition, much like other traditional automakers, but as one that has plans to lead in artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous vehicles.Musk has played his part in generating hype, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1839124331709751451">sharing a poster about the event on social media</a> titled "We, Robot," alongside claims that the day will be "one for the history books." But as Musk prepares to unveil a major part of his vision for Tesla's future, he faces a high-stakes situation.<h2 id="a84658bb-034b-4957-b8b0-ec898b9907ad">Tesla's high-risk pivot</h2>Musk has given investors strong signals over the years about his intent to evolve Tesla into something more than just an EV maker.Back in 2019, at Tesla's then-headquarters in Palo Alto, the EV chief told shareholders that by 2020, he was confident that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-robo-taxis-elon-musk-pt-barnum-circus-2019-4">a fleet of one million driverless robotaxis</a> would swarm the streets and carry passengers. Though he missed this deadline, he has driven Tesla into other areas.In July, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1815329637188202550">Musk wrote on X</a> that "Tesla will have genuinely useful humanoid robots in low production" for internal use next year and hopes to ramp up production to sell them to other companies in 2026. A prototype first shown in 2022 has been dubbed "Optimus."More broadly, Musk could look to humanoid robots and driverless cars as a way for Tesla to generate value from AI, the hyped technology put firmly on Silicon Valley's agenda after Musk's fellow cofounder at OpenAI and nemesis Sam Altman released ChatGPT in late 2022.That Tesla can capture a broader opportunity through robots and AI is not just Musk's conviction. Andrej Karpathy, Tesla's former director of AI, said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/468FvK4ndE4nWgxFdOob4h?si=tLshtVhrQuSDKcOV7LazOQ">recent episode of the No Priors podcast</a> that he doesn't think Tesla is a car company; in his view, "cars are basically robots." Meanwhile, in July, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DivesTech/status/1808269373209031018">Wedbush analyst Dan Ives claimed</a> the "Tesla AI story could be worth $1 trillion-plus and is the most undervalued AI name."<div type="image" title="Former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy." height="3132" width="4986" msid="114021292" hostid="261" sizebytes="259866"></div>However, what's critical to note is the timing for Tesla's robotaxi push. It comes at a tough moment for Elon Inc. For one, Tesla has been unable to escape sales pressure that has hit the wider EV market.In the first half of the year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1318605/000162828024032662/tsla-20240630.htm">Tesla generated $46.8 billion in revenue</a>, down from $48.3 billion in the same period last year. While Tesla posted a 6.4% year-on-year jump in deliveries for its third quarter, its value remains over $600 billion short of the $1.2 trillion peak it hit in November 2021.Caspar Rawles, chief data officer at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, an industry firm focused on market prices and supply chain data for EVs, expects EV growth to continue long-term but acknowledges that recent macroeconomic headwinds have led to a slowdown."You've seen higher interest rates, inflation, all kinds of hangovers from the pandemic," Rawles told BI. "EV sales have grown far more quickly than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles; they're just not growing as quickly as people thought."Reactions to Musk's overall brand have become more visceral as Tesla's shareholder base has split on his leadership following his controversial transformation of Twitter into X and his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-donald-trump-rally-butler-pennsylvania-assassination-attempt-2024-10">endorsement of former President Donald Trump.</a>"Elon bought Twitter and decided that he was going to become a global leader for the rightwing country of Elonville," said Ross Gerber, Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management CEO and Tesla shareholder.Gerber told BI that while he believed EVs are a business that can be "wonderfully profitable" — something that made the case strong to invest in Tesla in years prior — he feels far less confident about the robotaxi pivot.This is largely because Musk will be entering a market where competitors have a headstart. Waymo, owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/newsroom/waymo-on-uber/">struck a partnership with Uber</a> last year. BYD, a <a target="_blank" href="https://investor.uber.com/news-events/news/press-release-details/2024/Uber-and-BYD-Partner-to-Accelerate-Global-EV-Transition/default.aspx">Chinese EV maker, has also partnered with Uber</a> to bring "autonomous-capable vehicles" to customers globally.In China, Tesla's biggest market outside the US, local internet giant Baidu has already deployed a robotaxi fleet called Apollo Go, first launched in Wuhan in 2022. It is aggressively enticing consumers with heavy subsidies that translate to dirt-cheap fares."Robotaxis, in theory, could be profitable as long as there's not a lot of competition," Gerber told BI. "The problem is that there is, and it's already on the road."Questions also remain over how confident regulators are about the safety of robotaxis. Last year, GM-owned self-driving company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-slashes-robotaxi-fleet-half-after-collision-incidents-san-francisco-2023-8">Cruise took a reputational hit following crashes</a> involving its vehicles. Incidents like this have a knock-on effect on how the wider autonomous vehicle space is perceived, including Tesla's robotaxis. That's especially true because experts think the fully realized version of Musk's robotaxi ambitions presents technical challenges. Paul Miller, principal analyst at Forrester, said full autonomous driving means "a vehicle should be able to drive itself pretty much anywhere a human driver could, on any type of road, in any weather conditions.""It's more achievable to allow cars to drive themselves on particular types of road, in known locations, and in specific conditions," he said ahead of Tesla's Robotaxi Day.Clearly, then, Musk has a big story to tell on Thursday. Under the Hollywood lights, he'll be hoping investors are willing to believe in it as much as he is.

This was because safety benchmarks were not spelt out. Armed with better information and regulatory changes, Indians are more aware and discerning. A survey by LocalCircles has found that more than seven in 10 Indians will look at the safety rating of a car before marking their next purchase. Moreover, one in four will look at upgrading their vehicle if their current vehicle doesn’t meet the prescribed mark. Earlier this week, on August 22, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/gadkari-launches-bharat-ncap-indias-car-crash-test-programme/articleshow/102942949.cms">Nitin Gadkari launched</a> Bharat NCAP, India's own crash testing safety programme, saying that requests have already been received for crash testing of 30 models. He pointed out there is a huge demand for higher star rating vehicles. "People are cautious about safety, pollution. People want to use different types of fuel. If anywhere there is a new alternative available then they are ready to use," Gadkari said. The LocalCircles survey, which received over 24,000 responses from citizens across the country, found that 72% of consumers who plan to buy a new car in the next three years indicated that they “would want to know” the safety star or B-NCAP rating of different cars available in the market. According to a report by insurance firm Acko, a look at the current safety rating of cars sold in India shows that foreign manufacturers like Volkswagen and Skoda score highly on global safety standards (Global NCAP Rating 2023). Amongst Indian OEMs, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and Tata Motors score in the top five with Scorpion N and Punch respectively. From Maruti, the Brezza makes it to the top-20 list. The next question which arises is that once a consumer gets to know that the safety rating of the current car is low, what is the likely response going to be. The survey received 11,858 responses on this question with 48% of car owners stating that if the B-NCAP safety star rating of their car comes out to be low, they are likely to “ensure speed and safety belt compliance when on the high speed roads/ highways". Standard: Bharat NCAP will crash-test cars according to the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Test details: Three tests will be conducted - frontal, side and side pole impact. The evaluation will cover Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP) and Fitment of Safety Assist Technologies. For 3-star and above: The car must have front seat belt reminder and electronic stability control fitted.
