Though its investors will have to wait much longer before they see any returns.Wood's firm Ark Invest debuted a new closed-end interval fund in 2022, allowing investors to throw as little as $500 into a vehicle that invests in private startups. Investors can buy and sell shares in the fund just as they do with stocks, with some restrictions."Our goal here is to provide the best venture portfolio in the world to everyone in the world, not just to the rich and the famous," said Brett Winton, who works closely with Wood as chief futurist at Ark Invest and is an architect of the firm's venture capital strategy.The fund, Ark Venture Fund, has now gathered close to $70 million in assets, some distance from venture giants like Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz, or even Ark's other funds. ARKK, Wood's most famous fund, has $5.8 billion in assets, down from a peak of $50 billion.Despite its small size, the fund has clinched deals to invest in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-bets-big-on-humanoid-robots-with-figure-ai-2024-2">Figure</a>, a Jeff Bezos-backed startup developing humanoid robots, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-xai-hiring-spree-ai-tutors-2024-10">xAI</a>, an artificial-intelligence firm founded by Elon Musk, and OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.<div type="image" title="Elon Musk SpaceX" height="2034" width="2712" msid="115254561" hostid="261" sizebytes="675642"></div>It raises the question of why aging startups SpaceX, Epic Games, and Databricks, which have raised billions in funding, bother to include Ark in new rounds. SpaceX is Ark Venture Fund's largest holding, accounting for 13% of the fund's total assets, worth around $9 million.Winton said it's a subject he's frequently addressed in early meetings with founders.First, Ark produces reams of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ark-funds.com/articles">original research</a> on areas of investment. Winton said this research helps the firm win over teams because it demonstrates a grasp of their breakthrough technologies. "It means we can engage in really constructive conversations with them about their strategy," Winton said.Second, because Ark invests in both the private and public markets, it offers relationships with potential customers across the size spectrum of enterprises.Lastly, unlike a traditional venture fund, which has a fixed lifespan to invest the capital and return the profits to the fund's investors, Ark set up its venture fund to continue indefinitely, allowing investors to enter and exit the fund on a periodic basis.This provides flexibility to hold shares of companies after they go public, which can be particularly attractive for founders who are looking for investors with a long-term outlook and a higher tolerance for market volatility.In October, Ark invested at least $250 million into OpenAI's latest round, which pushed the AI startup's valuation to $157 billion.Most of that investment came from a related private venture fund that's only for high-net-worth investors. OpenAI makes up just 5% of the Ark Venture Fund's portfolio, which means it has less than $4 million invested."We would prefer to be able to write larger checks out of the venture fund than we currently can," Winton said.For that to happen, the fund will need to attract more investors.Though the fund is up 36% since its inception date, it's down 3% year to date, according to the website. The fee, 2.75%, is high relative to other interval funds, according to Morningstar, but it doesn't take carried interest or a share of profits.Winton said the fund could accrue assets into the billions of dollars; on a follow-up call, he walked back his comment, saying it's hard to know how big the fund could get."If that happens, then that'll actually become the story of Ark," he said. "Ark kind of changed venture capital."

But are you confused as to where to start? Does the stack of documents needed to file your <keyword id="19897621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITR" source="keywords">ITR</keyword> seem too long? Well, we’ve got you covered. But first off, why do you even need to file an ITR? Simply put, if your <keyword id="21120362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-income" source="keywords">annual income</keyword> is more than Rs 2.5 lakh (if you opt for the old tax regime) or Rs 3 lakh (if you opt for the new tax regime), you are liable to pay taxes and, hence, file an ITR. If you delay filing your ITR, or file it between August 1 and December 31st, you'll have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. If your annual income is below Rs 5 lakh, then you'll be fined Rs 1,000 for late filing. Firstly, there are your regular documents like PAN and Aadhar card. Also, keep all details of the bank account where you want your IT refund to be credited handy. It is advisable to also have your Annual Income Statement (AIS) ready, so that you can cross-verify and match all your income details while filing your ITR. AIS as a consolidated financial summary of your year <h2>Time to get in <keyword id="22247325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Form-16" source="keywords">form-16</keyword></h2>Up next is Form-16. This gives you a complete overview of your total earned salary and the TDS deducted. This is issued by the employer to their employee. So, if you have switched jobs during the year, or worked with one or more organizations, you'll have to ask both your current and former employer for Form-16. Additionally, along with Form-16, you should also ask your previous employer to give you a statement of full and final settlement. Generally, form-16 has two parts-A and B. While part-A carries details of the employer and a summary of salary payments made during the year, part-B is where you will find your salary breakup, and the deductions made from your salary, which include payment of life and health insurance premiums, contributions made to pension fund and more.<h2>Keep rent, travel proofs handy while filing ITR </h2>In case you are claiming tax deductions under HRA (house rent agreement), you will need a notarized rent agreement as proof of rent payment. Generally, rent agreements are made for a period of 11 months. Next, in case you have availed LTA (leave travel allowance), you should have all travel-related bills handy. You can claim tax exemption on LTA in two ways. One, you can claim exemption on the amount you've actually spent on your travel. Otherwise, within a 4-year time block (2022-2025), you can claim exemption for a maximum of 2 vacations. This is applicable only for domestic travel, and you can claim exemption for your immediate family members as well. But remember, LTA will not cover your accommodation or food-related expenses incurred on the trip. Up next are your investment proofs and capital gains statement. If you've paid premiums for a life or health insurance policy during the year, or invested in ELSS (equity-linked savings scheme), you need to furnish proofs for the same. You can claim an annual <keyword id="20265008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-deduction" source="keywords">tax deduction</keyword> of up to Rs 25,000 on premiums paid towards your health insurance policy. In fact, your insurance company will send you a certificate to that effect as well. As for ELSS, you can claim an annual tax deduction of up to Rs 1,50,000. But you cannot withdraw money from ELSS before 3 years, so invest carefully. <h2> Pay attention to capital gains while filing ITR</h2>If you've redeemed, or sold some of your investments (property, stocks, mutual funds) during the year and earned profit on them, you'll have to pay <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword>. But this is applicable only if your capital gains are over Rs 1,00,000 in one financial year. If you sold a share/mutual fund unit within 12 months of buying it, you'll have to pay a 15% short term capital gains tax. And if you redeemed an investment after 12 months, you'll be charged 10% long term capital gains tax. That is why it would help to have a capital gains statement handy, which will help you understand how much tax you have to pay.

ITR filing: Documents you need to file your income tax return

<ul class="summary-list"><li>VCs are lobbing cash at the presidential election and key congressional races, FEC data shows.</li><li>While most VCs favored Democrats, a16z's crypto giving dwarfed all other donations.</li></ul>America is bitterly divided over politics, and the tech industry — once portrayed as a liberal bastion — is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-a-distraction-silicon-valley-wants-to-be-over-2024-8">no different.</a> Among the sector's investor class, these disputes typically play out behind closed doors, with checkbooks rather than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-political-divide-twitter-elon-musk-kamala-harris-2024-8">angry social media posts</a>.This election cycle, investors at the top venture capital firms have plowed tens of millions of dollars into the election, both backing their favored political candidates and just cannily promoting commercial interests.Business Insider trawled political donation data released by the Federal Elections Commission to see how employees at VC firms have donated by candidates and political entities as the hotly contested race enters its final phase.The data is limited, focusing only on a subjective grouping of 10 high-profile firms, and cutting off at varying points over the summer. More recent FEC donor data will be released in the days and weeks ahead of the November 5 general election, often the most turbulent time in any cycle.The sheer volume of donations captured in the FEC filings underscores the significance of the tech constituency in the political arena, how the Silicon Valley elite has embraced politics of late, and just how flooded by money modern American politics has become.<h3 id="dd94bff4-8a0b-4fe4-8f40-59db1deb3131">The big spenders</h3>For venture capitalists, talking politics can invite scrutiny — or worse, turn off founders seeking funds for what might be the next big thing. It's part of the reason why many firms won't take positions on political issues or push a candidate on their employees.While that hasn't stopped individual investors from voting with their dollars, many VC firms are quick to point out that donations do not represent the organization's political stance.Except when they do.Andreessen Horowitz, or a16z, is the sole firm in our dataset to make political contributions directly. In this election cycle, it contributed $47 million to groups working to elect blockchain-friendly candidates, including Fairshake, a titanic crypto-industry backed super PAC. The firm is all-in on crypto, investing in Solana and Yuga Labs, and launched a $4.5 billion investment fund focused on this area in 2022.While the names of the firm's founders, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, also appear on filings for donations to these groups, a16z says on its <a target="_blank" href="https://a16zcrypto.com/posts/article/contributing-to-fairshake-pac/">website</a> that these contributions come from the firm, not the founders personally. Though the distinction a16z draws between itself and its founders might be slightly artificial, given Andreessen and Horowitz created, own, and named the firm after themselves.For all the brouhaha about Andreessen and Horowitz putting <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-vcs-in-silicon-valley-2024-7">millions of dollars</a> behind Trump's latest bid for the White House and Horowitz hedging his bets with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/read-ben-horowitzs-email-a16z-saying-plans-donate-kamala-harris-2024-10">a planned donation to Harris</a>, the data shows the two are a rare breed among venture investors: relatively bipartisan donors.Horowitz sent roughly 59% of his personal political contributions to Republicans and a little under 40% to Democrats, while Andreessen more strongly favored Republicans this election cycle, with 64% of his donations.In the time period covered by the data, a16z even eclipsed Greylock, where outgoing partner and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-billionaires-investors-kamala-harris-mark-cuban-reid-hoffman-2024-8">Democrat megadonor</a> Reid Hoffman has personally pumped nearly $30 million in recorded donations into the presidential election and key congressional races.Investors at Founders Fund, which has backed SpaceX and Palantir, are nearly 100% Republican in donations, though the bulk of contributions came from Keith Rabois, who left the firm in January to rejoin Khosla Ventures. Employees of venerable firm Kleiner Perkins are the opposite, giving almost entirely to Democratic causes, as is the case for Y Combinator, the colossal startup accelerator.Like Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital is largely bipartisan. Unlike a16z, its biggest donors are largely split on party lines. Michael Moritz, who left the firm midway through last year and continues to serve as an advisor to Sequoia Heritage, its wealth management group, gives to Democrats, while Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire donates to Republicans.<h3 id="3ae3c5f1-4f98-4417-8e68-d3e367656034">Number-crunching</h3>When a candidate's campaign or other political entity receives political donations, they must report it either quarterly or monthly to the FEC, along with information about the donors, including the donor's employer. The federal agency processes these filings, before releasing them in a searchable format on its website.The data analyzed for this story cuts off on August 31 for entities that report donations on a monthly basis (including presidential campaigns, national party committees, and some PACs), while the cut-off for entities that report quarterly (including Congressional committees and some PACs) is June 30. (The filing deadline for Q3 data for quarterly filing entities was October 15, but this data isn't yet readily available in full online.)Business Insider selected 10 venture capital firms to focus on, taking into account fund size and cultural and industry significance. The list encompasses employees ranging from general partners and firm founders to marketers and executive assistants.The findings should not be interpreted as an exhaustive accounting of all venture capital investors' donations to date, but as a comparative analysis of how some of the industry's most significant players have approached political giving over the summer as the election heated up.Business Insider divided the recipients into three categories: Democrat-aligned, Republican-aligned, and unaffiliated — a grouping that includes both bipartisan groups like Fairshake and independents like West Virginia senator Joe Manchin, as well as organizations like The Lincoln Project, run by self-described Republicans but in practice supporting Democratic causes.<h3 id="383b71f4-35bb-4d3d-9fd8-a1daae48b9df">Hoffman vs. Horowitz</h3>Hoffman, the top individual donor, has developed a reputation as tech's Democratic Party standard-bearer. In this election cycle, records show his efforts include $2 million to help fund an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2024/01/31/billionaire-reid-hoffman-spent-2-million-on-bidens-new-hampshire-write-in-campaign-fec-records-show/">unusual write-in effort</a> for President Joe Biden in New Hampshire, and millions to joint fundraising committees for Harris after Biden dropped out. Hoffman also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/05/us/politics/nikki-haley-reid-hoffman-donation.html">gave $250,000</a> to a super PAC supporting Nikki Haley, the last major candidate to challenge Trump for the Republican nomination.Most donors more closely resemble Hoffman than Horowitz: clearly partisan, with an overwhelming majority of their donations going to support one party.Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures is another of the biggest donors on the Democratic side of the aisle, with more than $3 million in recorded donations during the time period to recipients including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Harris' presidential campaign. Khosla's giving puts him just above John Doerr, chairman of Kleiner Perkins and architect of cleantech investing, though he hasn't managed funds for the firm in a decade.Sequoia Capital's Doug Leone is one of VC's most prolific GOP-aligned political donors, giving his almost $3.8 million to the National Republican Committee and other causes.The vehicle of choice for many of these donations is via super PACs, a controversial political fundraising tool that can raise unlimited funds — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fec.gov/help-candidates-and-committees/candidate-taking-receipts/contribution-limits/">bypassing FEC limits on donations</a> to candidates and other committees — but cannot directly coordinate with candidates. Asides from Fairshake, some of the biggest super PACs out there favored by VC investors include Future Forward PAC, a tech billionaire-linked Democrat-supporting group, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-america-super-pac-2024-10">America PAC, a right-wing entity founded by Elon Musk</a>.Investors also gave to several joint fundraising committees, which take money for multiple candidates or organizations. They, too, became favored over the years because a joint fundraising committee allows candidates to rake in cash while sharing the costs of fundraising — think website hosting fees, high-end hotels, and catering for splashy Hamptons fundraisers. The most well-loved committees in our dataset were the Harris Victory Fund and Harris Action Fund, the joint fundraising efforts between the Harris campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and state Democratic committees.Reached for comment by Business Insider, none of the named investment firms agreed to make employees available for interviews about their political giving. Venture capital is going to war over the election. Here's the data to prove it. 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>High-net-worth investors use many loopholes to reduce their taxes.</li><li>Among them are exchange funds, collars, 1031s, and hedging and borrowing against assets.</li></ul>In simple terms, there are only three places your money can go: to you and your family, to charitable organizations, and to the IRS. That's the pep talk Nayan Lapsiwala, a director of wealth management and partner at Aspiriant, gives his ultra-high-net-worth clients.The second part of his pep talk is to avoid letting tax avoidance undermine your financial future. It could be a bad idea to keep a stock solely to skip out on realizing capital gains."What if that stock falls 50% or more?" Lapsiwala said. "You are trying to save money on taxes, but your entire financial future can get wiped out with the market."This is why <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-strategies-irs-rules-that-can-improve-your-financial-situation-2024-5">tax loopholes</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-defer-real-estate-capital-gains-tax-1031-exchange-2024-3">deferral strategies exist</a>, and why the wealthy seek out top advisors to help them navigate the complicated and intricate tax code. The right advice can buy time, reduce tax burdens, or even avoid them altogether without breaking any laws.<h2 id="e7689c3d-b101-4cb5-aaa5-8e6baca28255">8 loopholes</h2>Most investors know and have access to an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-an-etf#:~:text=An%20exchange%2Dtraded%20fund%20(ETF,liquid%20as%20some%20mutual%20funds.">exchange-traded fund</a> (ETF). But what about an exchange fund?For investors who have reaped high gains from a stock and want to shave some off to reduce concentration risk, Lapsiwala says choosing to pool their assets in an exchange or swap fund with other investors is the way to go. A manager then oversees this fund. Consider it a 'you share your stocks, and I'll share mine'-type scenario. It gives participating investors diversification without triggering a tax event. The catch is that the shares must be held in the fund for seven years to reap the benefits and defer the tax."The manager's responsibility is to reduce capital gain taxes for everyone because now as you have a pool of assets, there might be some stocks that will go down in value, some might go up," Lapsiwala said. "So, a tax-loss-harvesting type of trading will take place and then you are reducing your capital gains taxes."Another way to lock in profits on securities is by creating collars, which means buying a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/option-chain#:~:text=An%20option%20is%20a%20contract,its%20own%20type%20of%20security.">put option and selling a call option</a> against the underlying asset. It hedges the share price because the put creates a floor, allowing the buyer to keep the stock but offload it if it falls below the agreed-upon price, which is the strike. But buying that put will cost a premium. Therefore, calls are sold to offset the cost, giving another buyer the right to purchase the stock if it rises. The downside is that it caps any upside potential above the strike."There are executives we work with, for whatever restriction, they cannot sell, or they have huge capital gains and they don't want to take a big tax hit," Lapsiwala said. This strategy helps them plan the timing of when they want to realize the gains."For those who need liquidity, once the stock is hedged, they can borrow up to 50% against its value on margin, Lapsiwala noted. This strategy could have a double tax benefit: One, the investor isn't realizing a capital gain. Two, if the borrowed amount is used for another investment and there is investment income, the cost of borrowing is treated as investment interest. It can be used to reduce the overall taxable income.Some investors will borrow against their stocks without hedging. This is common for short-term liquidity needs, like bridge financing to buy a property while waiting to sell another, Lapsiwala noted. The risk here is if the stock drops in value in the interim, you get a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/margin-call#:~:text=A%20margin%20call%20occurs%20when%20the%20value%20of%20the%20equity,off%20some%20of%20the%20investments.">margin call</a> and must come up with the capital to cover it.As for investors who have philanthropic goals, charitable giving is tax deductible. Still, instead of giving cash that's already taxed, some of Lapsiwala's wealthy clients give their appreciated securities to a 501(c) charitable organization. This grants them a tax deduction while skipping out on capital gains tax.Another way of giving to charity is by donating appreciated assets to a donor-advised fund (DAF). In turn, the investor get a tax deduction in the year it was gifted, but they don't have to give the full amount to the charitable organization in that calendar year."This is a strategy when you have high taxable income, and you want to reduce your taxes but aren't sure that you want to give charitable grants of a high amount in a year," Lapsiwala said. "So what we typically do is, let's say clients are giving $100,000 a year, we will say, 'let's fund that by a million dollars' and they can get that million dollar deduction now, but over the next 10 years, give $100,000 annually from that account."Clients who want to give to charity while continuing to benefit from gains on their principal can opt for a charitable remainder trust (CRT). It allows them to transfer cash, property, or assets to an irrevocable trust that pays an income in the form of an annuity or a percent of the trust's assets for a term or until their death, upon which it goes to the selected charities.John Pantekidis, managing partner at TwinFocus, says CRTs are a win-win for the charity and donor. The latter gets a tax deduction up front and an annuity while helping a charity.Pantekidis, whose average client is worth close to $200 million, says this setup is suggested for clients with highly appreciated assets who want an income from it but are also charitably inclined.But perhaps the tax avoidance strategy that has been an absolute home run for high-net-worth clients, according to Pantekidis, is investing in qualified opportunity zones. These are economically distressed areas that require long-term investments in real estate and businesses.If you have a million dollars of capital gains and if you invest it in a qualified opportunity zone, you get to defer that through 2026, Pantekidis noted. Any appreciation on that investment escapes tax permanently; that's an avoidance, he said. Furthermore, an investor can depreciate the property for further tax deductions without depreciation recapture."So not only do you avoid tax on the gain, to the extent you get depreciation you can avoid tax on the initial gain. It's become an absolute home run for ultra-high-net-worth clients who have capital gains. Even some of our hedge fund managers who get compensation through carried interests of capital gains can defer those capital gains and even avoid them."However, the investment must be held for five to seven years to defer a portion of those gains and at least 10 years for the new gains to be fully tax-free.Finally, those with an appreciated property who can identify a similar property to swap it with can use 1031 Exchanges. It allows the client to defer the capital gains. If they die with the property, they can get a step-up in basis which permanently removes any tax originally deferred by the exchange, Pantekidis said.

"Every function can change and should be changing and needs to take accountability and ownership for driving that, versus waiting for a central team to figure everything out."With evolving workplace priorities, the Workforce Innovation board also predicted which new roles might emerge in the C-suite, including "chief transformation officer" and "chief experience officer."The following has been edited for length and clarity.Julia Hood: What's the old way of C-suite leadership, and what's the new way? What is changing for those leading the workforce during this time of transformation?<h2 id="0c6ca21f-d8b4-40db-bb90-e9fb8d56ff2b">Alicia Pittman, chair of global people team, Boston Consulting Group</h2>One of the biggest differences we're seeing and we'll continue to see is that the concept of apprenticeship is becoming truly a two-way street. An old version of apprenticeship is learning the craft step-by-step — like the "Karate Kid" and Mr. Miyagi, based on wisdom and time.Now leaders are also seeing from younger generations how to embrace technology and AI, specifically, how to lead inclusive teams that maybe don't look so much like you, and how to support employees through mental-health challenges and general wellness.I'm seeing that happening in very powerful ways, truly two ways, and up and down. Organizations that embrace that — which are flatter, less formal, and allow for more of that cross-connectivity — are going to benefit as that becomes more the norm in how we craft leadership.<h2 id="f242fb98-9c94-4e5b-8135-1f191d2cb6f3">Neil Murray, CEO, Work Dynamics at JLL</h2>I like the idea that's been coined about leading from behind. The notion is that the old way was about leading leaders top-down, personally owning strategy, P&amp;L, innovation, and culture.Leading from behind has been likened to a shepherd coordinating from behind and creating an environment where people who are willing and able can take initiative and lead innovation. That company culture becomes owned collectively rather than the singular responsibility of the CEO.I don't think that's about a CEO stepping back and allowing mob rule, but rather, it's about harnessing collective genius in the organization.I think the reason for this is that the psychological contract between companies and employees has changed quite dramatically and continues to change. We know that people are looking for more meaning and purpose in their working lives. They expect to be seen. They expect to be valued for who they are and, ultimately, want to be part of and coauthor a company purpose and culture.It also applies to innovation. It's no longer about incremental innovation from a centralized chief product officer. Breakthrough innovation will be key, with consistent breakthrough innovation to sustain competitiveness. From a leadership perspective, that's about creating an environment where those closest to issues and most nimble can lean in and innovate, rather than trying to centralize it.<h2 id="d012677b-737d-445d-84a4-5d9f7a363a82">Kenon Chen, executive vice president of strategy and growth, Clear Capital</h2>When I first saw the GitHub Copilot demo before it was launched, I was struck by the idea of someone with a business use case and business knowledge being able to execute and create a technical solution without going through our typical translation layers, which are business analysts and scrum masters and technical project managers.We now have this huge layer of translators between the business, especially from the C-suite to the people who are creating the innovations or products.What gen AI is leading us to is a world in which we don't need so many translators because there are fewer hops from the idea to the value that we want to create to the execution. When you have all these translators, it's like the telephone game.As a leader, you need to be able to communicate much more precisely and clearly the outcome that you're trying to create in terms of value. You have to be your own translator, in a way, so that every stakeholder involved can take action on what's being communicated.<h2 id="df0e2c1a-ee63-46c5-b1e1-3cca22a63036">Anant Adya, executive vice president, service-offering head, and head of Americas delivery, Infosys</h2>At Infosys, one of the things we are focusing on is employee well-being. We want to be a hybrid work environment where we give flexibility to our employees to choose the way they want to work.There is obviously great value in coming to the office, collaborating with team members, and working to do innovative stuff. But this also ties back to DEI initiatives in the company. As we improve our gender diversity, especially as we go to the top, we want to make sure we give flexibility to our employees.Also very important is how we embrace innovation. We continuously upskill, retrain, and reskill our employees. How do we make sure that we embrace the culture of learning in the company? It's very critical that we have to constantly learn and upskill ourselves with all the new technologies that are coming and with all the new lingo that is being spoken. We don't want to get stuck in the old world of still talking old technology.Finally, we balance risk and focus from a long-term standpoint. Of course, everybody's focused on the quarter results and numbers, but we want to have a very long-term focus and plan at the same time.<h2 id="ef9e6c96-6d4a-4af5-a150-163cc530eada">Justina Nixon-Saintil, vice president and chief impact officer, IBM</h2>There is such a focus on employee voice across everything that we do. When you think about AI, we're asking employees, no matter where they are across the business, to come up with use cases and ways that AI can make a difference in their function.In the past, this would be the limit of just one entity, one function to come up with the right use cases. Maybe it was the software team, CIO team, or CTO.Now we're looking across the entire business and saying, "Come up with the right use cases that can help your function, your programs, your organization."Even in the area that I lead around corporate responsibility and ESG, we're deploying AI technology to create better learning pathways for our users or to look at ESG and data analytics. So this is an area we're leading within the organization and not necessarily waiting for another function to help us lead.<h2 id="b9d6a0b9-97d7-4bef-b44c-1a0b1ebba35e">Maggie Hulce, chief revenue officer, Indeed</h2>We are moving towards AI-enabled transformation being a companywide expectation, as opposed to just a few teams working on it and incubating it. That requires, as others have said, cross-team learning and development, and we are acknowledging we need both centrally driven, top-down things and a lot of bottom-up things.That's a parallel concept to DEI. We've gone through the transition of separate DEI organizations to having it be the expectation that equity is every leader's responsibility.Having a separate team that's supposed to make everybody behave with equity just doesn't work.With well-being, we've been on this track that, of course, physical and mental health, employee engagement, and employee voice are really important. Right now, there's more focus on training managers for the challenges of the multigenerational workforce and the mix of in person and remote.The speed of change is getting more and more rapid. How do we equip the managers up and down to help navigate this? And that's a big part of employee buy-in and navigating change. In the C-suite itself, you have more roles that have to think cross-functionally and be cross-functionally trained. Because as you think about how AI can change processes, it blurs and breaks old functional lines.That will make people uncomfortable. But if you let the functional lines be blockers, it will definitely slow you down. So our expectation is that we're going to see more and different types of roles that are enabling transformation.<h2 id="9b14003d-0c96-46b6-9c44-0515cc2393cf">Lucrecia Borgonovo, chief talent and organizational-effectiveness officer, Mastercard</h2>One of the biggest shifts is around decision-making — the move from siloed decision-making, where each member of the C-suite has a defined set of decisions they're accountable for, to a C-suite that acts more as a collective leadership body. It acts more cross-functionally, and there are more shared responsibilities and more joint decision-making that becomes part of the norm.There's much more fluidity and interdependency across different roles and functions. C-suite leaders are wearing multiple hats and creating roles that are much more versatile in nature.Tim Paradis: We've seen new C-suite roles emerge in recent years, like chief AI officer and chief ethics officer. The C-suite itself is getting larger in some cases. What new C-suite offices might emerge next?Nixon-Saintil: I'm seeing a lot of new roles, especially in corporate social responsibility and ESG. More "chief impact officers" are focused on social impact across the business. Those roles sometimes oversee environmental affairs and sustainability initiatives.The "chief sustainability officer" role has increased significantly over the last two years. Many large companies had them, but now smaller or midsize companies are adding that role to the C-suite, especially as they prepare for regulation around sustainability and all of the mandatory disclosure that is occurring."Chief ESG officer" is a new role that we are seeing as well, with a focus on ESG, regulation, controls, and accountability.Adya: The common thing that will happen across roles is the use of data and AI across every role.There are two roles that we are seeing in some of our bigger customers. One is chief experience officer, who is focused on what we call "human experience." It's not just about the experience of users but also of the stakeholders, business users, and customers of the enterprise.For example, if you go to a company and ask a finance person, "What does experience look like for you?" He or she will say that I would want to close my books on time. That's the experience. They don't care about whether they're using X, Y, or Z vendor. For them, closing the books on time is their experience. So this is about looking at the experience of the stakeholders, the users, and their customers.Then, while there is a "chief AI officer" role that's picking up, there is also a lot of focus on automation. How do we use automation in a business process? So the "chief automation officer," cutting across the enterprise, is looking at areas where we could potentially drive automation in a big way.Borgonovo: One that is on my mind is what you might call a "chief optimization officer," focused on how do you extract the most value across your products, your services, and all the different investments that you make, identifying items that aren't necessarily scaling.The other one that we have seen at Mastercard is the "chief risk officer," a new role created in response to the environment getting incredibly complex and the importance of embedding risk management into the organization.Roles like chief transformation officer will continue to be relevant. It all depends on the maturity of the different capabilities that you have in the organization.Pittman: I think that a lot of these roles — whether it's chief diversity officer, chief risk officer, chief digital officer — are really about building new competencies that are not widely spread. Where it's working best, you see companies standing up leadership for these capabilities and then pushing it down the line. It's got to be everybody's accountability.The number of companies naming chief transformation officers grew about 140% over the last couple of years. It's one of those roles where the impact is most measurable. You can see with a chief transformation officer, from the time they're appointed to the next two years, on average, that the company is going to improve its shareholder return performance versus its peers.That's pretty remarkable in terms of impact, so we'll keep seeing that. With the pace of change, the half-life of market leadership keeps getting shorter and shorter. We're going to see the role of the chief transformation officer being critical to enable C-suites to keep up with the pace of change and drive cross-functional initiatives.Hulce: I was just pitching this idea of a transformation leader, not necessarily reporting to the CEO but one across internal functions to help drive the next 18 months given how fast we intend to stand up totally different ways of working.When we think about transformation for external products versus transformation for internal processes, it is a bit different. So when we think about the work we're trying to do for external products, making sure the scope is clear — those are long-standing, typical questions for how you stay competitive and innovate.But rapid cross-functional, internal transformation is different. Can you make a successful role to drive a complete rethink of process and workflow across many functions with technology and AI being a critical enabler?In the past, it wasn't as important to do cross-functionally as it is now, with what gen AI can do. It's a big opportunity to radically rethink how this work gets done.Murray: Business-unit leaders now have an explicit responsibility to look at everything within their business line and think about on a 2-by-2 matrix the feasibility versus the impact of transforming end-to-end process.Chen: I do like this idea of a chief transformation officer, but the risk there is if every leader isn't equipped with thinking about how to proactively get value from tools that are around the organization and the data that is available. Everyone is going to have to be reskilled to learn how to do that, with AI as one of the new accelerator tools.

The C-suite is evolving — and new roles may join to drive innovation, say execs from IBM, JLL, Clear Capital, and more

Revenues of organised <keyword id="21758362" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gold-jewellery-retailers" source="keywords">gold jewellery retailers</keyword> are expected to surge by 22-25% this fiscal year, driven by the sharp reduction in import duties on <keyword id="18712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold" source="Orion">gold</keyword> in the July Budget, according to a <keyword id="20874793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISIL-report" source="keywords">CRISIL report</keyword>. A recent analysis by CRISIL Ratings, which examined 58 gold jewellery retailers representing a third of the <keyword id="21165181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="organised-sector" source="keywords">organised sector</keyword>'s revenues, indicates that the sector will benefit from improved <keyword id="19900859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="working-capital" source="keywords">working capital</keyword> management. Although many retailers plan significant store expansions--estimated at 12-14% of existing stores--lower gold prices will reduce inventory costs, providing working capital relief. The organised jewellery sector, which accounts for just over a third of the overall market, is poised for a stronger financial performance compared to its unorganised counterpart. The steep reduction in <keyword id="20069572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="import-duty" source="keywords">import duty</keyword> has come at a crucial time for the industry, as retailers prepare for the festive and marriage seasons. Following the price decline, volumes are expected to grow by 3-5% this fiscal year, reversing earlier projections of stagnant demand. Gold prices had been steadily rising since February 2024, which had subdued consumer demand and led to revenue growth driven solely by higher realisations rather than increased sales volumes. Himank Sharma, Director at CRISIL Ratings, highlighted the timely impact of the duty cut and said, "The duty cuts to their decadal lows have come at an opportune time for the gold jewellery retailers as they start stocking for the festive and marriage seasons from the latter half of August." He added, "However, the inventory losses on the existing stock due to the price cuts will be partially mitigated by the reduced spends on marketing and discounts, as demand revives. All said <keyword id="19957745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profitability" source="keywords">profitability</keyword> will see a marginal dip on-year to 7.1-7.2%." Despite the pressure on profitability, retailers' cash flows will improve due to higher revenues, enabling them to pursue expansion plans. Store expansions, expected to increase by 12-14%, will require higher inventory levels. However, the lower input costs resulting from reduced gold prices will balance out the additional working capital requirements. Gaurav Arora, Associate Director at CRISIL Ratings, added, "Gold jewellery retailers will maintain comfortable financial metrics this fiscal, with total outside liabilities to tangible net worth (TOL/TNW) and interest coverage ratios remaining around 1.0 and 9 times, respectively. These will be moderately better than our earlier expectations, keeping credit profiles stable." As the festive season approaches, gold prices remain around 17% higher than last year's average, which is expected to sustain demand and further drive revenues in the second half of the fiscal year. However, potential volatility in gold prices, changes in government regulations, and shifts in consumer sentiment will need to be closely monitored. The combination of reduced prices, increased demand, and improved working capital management is expected to keep the financial outlook for gold jewellery retailers positive, despite the slight dip in profitability. The reduced duty has caused retail gold prices to fall by Rs 4,500-5,000 per 10 grams, leading to increased demand for gold jewellery. The growth projection, 500-600 basis points higher than earlier estimates of 17-19%, is fuelled by higher volumes as more consumers are enticed by the lower prices.

However, many are coming back, with returning Lithuanians <a target="_blank" href="https://123.emn.lt/en/#immigration">representing a quarter of all immigrants</a> last year.Tens of thousands of immigrants from outside the EU, many from Ukraine and Belarus, are also moving to a transformed Vilnius. "I like living here," he added. "If you are walking, you don't need to worry that somebody will kidnap you or something."On an evening in mid-August, youthful <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/types-of-influencers-on-social-media-micro-macro-nano-classification-2020-1">influencer types</a> lined up outside trendy restaurants, while bars overflowed onto the cobbled streets with businesspeople clinking beer glasses. Their impulsiveness is fueled by the constant influx of new trends and designs, alongside faster delivery options. This meant an taxation ambiguity for ETFs (exchange traded funds), funds of funds and gold mutual funds, where the primary investment wasn't in debt securities, but another asset class like gold. However, since their investments in equities remained below 35%, they were clubbed with specified mutual funds, and taxed accordingly. Now, the budget has changed the definition of a specified mutual funds. From now on, any fund which invests more than 65% of its total proceeds in debt instruments would be classified as a specified mutual fund, and will be taxed as per the investor's income tax slab. In her letter, dated August 30, Banerjee emphasised the gravity of the situation and urged for prompt central intervention, highlighting the inadequacy of the reply received from the Union Minister of <keyword id="20086338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-and-Child-Development" source="keywords">Women and Child Development</keyword>. The letter reads, "No reply was received from your end on such a sensitive issue. However, a reply has been received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India (vide their No. 1/RESC/HMWCD/2024 dated 25th August 2024), which barely addresses the gravity of the issue raised in my letter. I am of the view that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to society have not been adequately appreciated in this generic reply." The letter was posted on her social media handle, X. The letter mentioned, "Moreover, I would also refer to some of the initiatives in this area that our State has already undertaken, which appear to have been overlooked in the reply. Regarding Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), 10 exclusive POCSO Courts have been approved by the State Government. In addition to this, 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning throughout the State with complete State funding. Monitoring and disposal of cases are entirely in the hands of the Courts." Highlighting the issue of appointing Presiding Officers in FTSCs, she further stated that this process requires examination and action from the Government of India, which, according to her, needs PM Modi's intervention. "As per Central Government guidelines, only retired Judicial Officers can be posted as Presiding Officers in FTSCs, but the Hon'ble High Court has observed that, in view of the severity of the cases, permanent Judicial Officers need to be appointed. This requires examination at the level of the Government of India and appropriate action thereafter, for which your intervention would be necessary. Moreover, Helpline Nos. 112 and 1098 are functioning satisfactorily in the State. Additionally, Dial 100 is also extensively used in emergency situations," the letter added. Mamata Banerjee mentioned in her letter, "I would reiterate and earnestly request that a stringent Central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes of rape/rape and murder be considered, with a mandatory provision for the disposal of cases within a specific timeframe by the trial authorities. I hope this matter would receive very considered attention at your kind end in the interest of our society at large." On August 26, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi criticised the West Bengal government for its failure to implement essential safety measures for women and children in the state. In a letter written to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the Union Minister stated that 123 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) were allocated to the state, but none of them are functional yet. Earlier, on August 22, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the central government to bring in central legislation and set up fast-track courts for "sensitive" issues to ensure a speedy trial. Mamata, in the letter, mentioned that such "sensitive" issues need to be addressed comprehensively through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. The Bengal Chief Minister suggested the setting up of "fast-track special courts" to deal with such cases, which require a speedy trial. This development comes after the trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
