A recent review commissioned by the <keyword id="19902256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organisation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="World Health Organisation" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="World Health Organisation">World Health Organisation</keyword> and published in the journal Environment International confirms the same. The study, which was conducted by Sarah Loughran, who is Director, Radiation Research and Advice, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), and Ken Karipidis, Assistant Director, Health Impact Assessment, ARPANSA, delved into the potential <keyword id="21194036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-effects" source="keywords">health effects</keyword> from radio wave exposure, and has shown mobile phones are not linked to brain cancer. <h2>Radiation as a possible carcinogen</h2> Despite the consensus, occasional research studies have been published that suggested the possibility of harm. In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radio wave exposure as a possible carcinogen to humans. The meaning of this classification was largely misunderstood and led to some increase in concern. IARC is part of the World Health Organisation. Its classification of radio waves as a possible carcinogen was largely based on limited evidence from human observational studies. Also known as epidemiological studies, they observe the rate of disease and how it may be caused in human populations. Observational studies are the best tool researchers have to investigate long-term health effects in humans, but the results can often be biased. The IARC classification relied on previous observational studies where people with brain cancer reported they used a mobile phone more than they actually did. One example of this is known as the INTERPHONE study. This new systematic review of human observational studies is based on a much larger data set compared to what the IARC examined in 2011. It includes more recent and more comprehensive studies. This means we can now be more confident that exposure to radio waves from mobile phones or <keyword id="22150173" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wireless-technologies" source="keywords">wireless technologies</keyword> is not associated with an increased risk of brain cancer, the paper noted. <h2>No association</h2> The new review forms part of a series of systematic reviews commissioned by the World Health Organisation to look more closely at possible health effects associated with exposure to radio waves. This systematic review provides the strongest evidence to date that radio waves from wireless technologies are not a hazard to human health. It is the most comprehensive review on this topic - it considered more than 5,000 studies, of which 63, published between 1994 and 2022, were included in the final analysis. The main reason studies were excluded was that they were not actually relevant; this is very normal with search results from systematic reviews. No association between mobile phone use and brain cancer, or any other head or neck cancer, was found. There was also no association with cancer if a person used a mobile phone for ten or more years (prolonged use). How often they used it - either based on the number of calls or the time spent on the phone - also didn't make a difference. Importantly, these findings align with previous research. It shows that, although the use of wireless technologies has massively increased in the past few decades, there has been no rise in the incidence of brain cancers. <h2>A good thing</h2> Overall, the results are very reassuring. They mean that our national and international safety limits are protective. Mobile phones emit low-level radio waves below these safety limits, and there is no evidence exposure to these has an impact on human health, said the study. Despite this, it is important that research continues. Technology is developing at a rapid pace. With this development comes the use of radio waves in different ways using different frequencies. It is therefore essential that science continues to ensure radio wave exposure from these technologies remains safe. The challenge we now face is making sure this new research counteracts the persistent misconceptions and misinformation out there regarding mobile phones and brain cancer. There remains no evidence of any established health effects from exposures related to mobile phones, and that is a good thing.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Exercising at specific times of day could lower colorectal cancer risk, a new study found.</li><li>Activity is known to reduce cancer risk, but how timing affects this isn't well-studied.</li></ul>Being physically active in both the morning and evening could reduce the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colorectal-cancer-high-mortality-young-people-signs-symptoms-disease-2024-1">risk of colorectal cancer</a> by 11%, according to a new study.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-cardio-exercise-men-can-prevent-cancer-2023-7">Previous studies</a> have found that people who exercise regularly have a lower colorectal cancer risk than those who don't. This latest research, published September 18 in the journal <a target="_blank" href="https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-024-03632-4">BMC Medicine</a>, suggests that what time of day someone is active could have an impact too.Professor Michael Leitzmann, lead author of the study and chair of the department of epidemiology and preventive medicine at the University of Regensburg, Germany, told Business Insider that the findings could be a helpful jumping-off point for research into new colorectal cancer prevention strategies.But he stressed that from a public health perspective, people should be encouraged to be active at any time of the day.Sam Orange, a senior lecturer in clinical exercise physiology at the University of Newcastle, UK, who has studied the impact of exercise on colorectal cancer prevention and was not involved in the study, told BI that the findings could help create more accurate and clearly-defined physical activity guidelines for cancer prevention.Leitzmann and his team analyzed the physical activity habits of 86,252 participants aged between 42 and 79 who shared their health and lifestyle information with the UK Biobank biomedical database. They were asked to track their activity by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/fitness-wearables-trackers-pros-cons-wellness-experts-2024-1">wearing a device </a>on their wrist known as an accelerometer.After five years, 529 of the participants were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer.<h2 id="6b8ba93b-c26f-4d28-9c7d-f11348709b52">People who were active in the morning and evening had an 11% lower risk of developing bowel cancer</h2>The researchers identified four common patterns of activity: continuous daylong activity, activity late in the day, activity in the morning and evening, and activity at midday and at night.The primary finding was that two peaks of activity, one around 8 a.m. and the other around 6 p.m., was associated with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-risks-young-people-reduce-diet-alcohol-2024-2]">a lower colorectal cancer risk</a> "beyond the benefits of overall physical activity," the authors said.Daylong activity was associated with a 6% lower risk, and middle of the day and the night activity didn't appear to impact the participants' risk. Data from those who were only active later in the day was inconclusive.Further research is needed to confirm whether the time we exercise affects our colorectal cancer risk, but Leitzmann suspects it stems from beneficial biological processes being activated twice a day instead of once.In 2022, Orange's research group found in a study published in the <a target="_blank" href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ijc.33982">International Journal of Cancer</a> that each exercise bout releases of cancer-fighting molecules into the bloodstream, which is thought to help reduce tumor growth. They used colon cancer cells and blood samples from 16 men over 50 who, due to lifestyle choices, had a higher risk of colon cancer."Therefore, being active twice daily, instead of once, could provide additional benefits by allowing more cancer-fighting molecules to be released into the bloodstream," he said.<h2 id="7b24935d-2048-40a9-98d6-76324185443c">More people under 55 are developing colon cancer</h2>Colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in US men and the fourth-leading cause in US women, according to The American Cancer Society. It's expected to cause about 53,010 deaths this year.The rate of people being diagnosed with the condition has fallen since the mid-1980s, but in people under 55, rates have been increasing by 1% to 2% a year since the mid-1990s, the Society said.Experts still don't know what's behind this uptick, but many potential explanations, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eating-ultra-processed-foods-ovarian-brain-cancer-risk-2022-2">ultra-processed foods</a>, microplastics, and obesity, are being studied.Dr. Michael Shusterman, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist at NYU Langone's Perlmutter Cancer Center on Long Island, previously told BI that he typically recommends patients quit smoking; cut down on alcohol; do some moderate-intensity exercise; eat more fiber and less red meat; and avoid ultra-processed foods as much as possible to prevent colorectal cancer."Every movement counts for reducing colorectal cancer risk, meaning that doing any amount of physical activity is better than none," Orange said.

This is the first-ever <keyword id="184804" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chromosome" source="Orion">chromosome</keyword> level genome sequencing of a marine invertebrate species from India. Earlier, CMFRI had come out with a similar genome finding for Indian oil sardine. The Asian green mussel, Kallummakkaya in local parlance, is an important aquaculture species in the family Mytilidae contributing substantially to molluscan aquaculture. CMFRI's research found that the mussel's genome contains 723.49 Mb in size and is anchored into 15 chromosomes, according to a CMFRI release here on Thursday. The research was published in the journal Scientific Data by Nature Group. "The development will be a game-changer in boosting sustainable mussel aquaculture in the country, as this research will help gain insights into its growth, reproduction and disease resistance", said Dr Grinson George, Director of CMFRI. The findings will benefit the aquaculture sector by improving genomic selection and breeding practices, leading to enhanced productivity and resilience in fisheries, he added. A team of researchers from CMFRI led by Principal Scientist Dr Sandhya Sukumaran carried out this study with funding support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi. The team includes Dr A Gopalakrishnan, V G Vysakh, Dr Wilson Sebastian, Dr Lalitha Hari Dharani, Dr Akhilesh Pandey, Dr Abishek Kumar and Dr J K Jena. According to scientists, this will help develop new strategies to combat diseases in the mussel. "Genomic investigations on this species are vital to understand genes, gene combinations and signaling pathways leading to the parasitic diseases, which constitute a major threat to Asian green mussel aquaculture in India causing substantial mortalities in farms," said Dr Sandhya Sukumaran. According to the scientists, the genome assembly of green mussels will emerge as a valuable tool for exploring <keyword id="6355291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer" source="Orion">cancer</keyword> mechanisms and developing new therapeutic strategies. "A total of 49654 protein-coding genes were identified, including 634 genes associated with the cancer pathway and 408 genes associated with viral carcinogenesis. This indicates that this species is a novel model organism for cancer research," Sukumaran said. This advancement promises to significantly enhance our understanding of cancer pathways and facilitate the discovery of novel treatments, she added. Apart from its aquaculture prospects, Asian green mussels play a vital role as a bio-monitor as it is capable of accumulating heavy metals and other environmental pollutants in large quantities. Understanding the genome assembly will provide valuable information about the genomic pathways involved in response to pollutants. "The genetic markers to be developed from this research could be used to monitor pollutants in aquatic bodies, a significant milestone in safeguarding the aquatic environment," Sandhya said. Scientists believe that the genome decoding of this species would enhance knowledge regarding the effect of environmental pollutants on biological systems, as this bivalve is adaptable to local environmental stressors like variations in pH, temperature, salinity and air exposure.

The report estimated that in 2024, around 310,720 new cases will be diagnosed, and around 42,250 women will die from the disease. Men can also get breast cancer, although it is rare.The link between breast cancer and having children is complex, but certain factors, like the age at which a woman has a child, can impact the risk, Jemal said.Dr. Hannah Moody, head of science and health education at the charity Breast Cancer UK, sought to allay the fears of women who fall into those categories. "Yes, breastfeeding and having children younger may help to reduce your risk of breast cancer. But that alone isn't why rates are increasing," she said, adding that lifestyle and environmental factors also play a role in the increased number of cases. However, documenting such trends can help experts such as epidemiologists understand cancer rates at a population-wide level, and shouldn't be a cause for concern.<h2 id="a6484446-435a-493b-acd0-a7f11c2c9fb4">Breastfeeding</h2>Breastfeeding has a protective effect against breast cancer, Jemal said, but rates have declined in the US over time.The CDC recommends exclusively breastfeeding babies for the first six months of their lives and breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for at least a year. But only one in four US infants were exclusively breastfed for more than six months in 2019, a 2023 study published in Frontiers in Public Health found.The risk of breast cancer decreases by around 4% for every 12 months of breastfeeding, according to Breast Cancer UK.A possible explanation is that breastfeeding reduces a person's total number of lifetime menstrual cycles. The more cycles they have, the greater their exposure to the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are linked to a higher breast cancer risk, according to the ACS.<h2 id="a6232ea3-183b-444e-bca1-8aaa70531b0c">Not having children or having children later in life</h2>More and more people are deciding not to have children or to have them later in life, as shown by the rise in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parents-dinks-winning-childfree-economy-finances-income-vacation-retirement-kids-2024-2">DINKs</a>.According to a 2022 report from the US Census Bureau, fertility rates among women in their 20s fell by 43% between 1990 and 2019, while those of women ages 35 to 39 increased by 67%.And in 2023, 47% of US adults under 50 without children said they were unlikely to ever have them, compared to 37% in 2018, according to a Pew Research Center survey.This drop in fertility rates may have contributed to the rise in younger women getting breast cancer because having children later in life is an established risk factor, Jemal said.Women who have not had children or who had their first child after age 30 have a slightly higher breast cancer risk overall, according to the ACS. Meanwhile, having many pregnancies and becoming pregnant at a young age reduces breast cancer risk.

A cancer dietitian shares 3 lunches that could help prevent colon cancer, a condition on the rise in young people

Cancer Mukt Bharat Foundation, a Delhi-based non-profit organisation, conducted the study by collating data from calls received on its helpline number from March 1 to June 30. Dr. Ashish Gupta, a senior oncologist who is heading the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign in India, said that India is seeing surge in head and neck cancer cases, especially among young men, due to increased <keyword id="20681485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tobacco-consumption" source="keywords">tobacco consumption</keyword> and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. "Around 80-90 pc of oral cancer patients have been found to use tobacco in some form, be it smoking or chewing. Most of the head and neck cancer are preventable, unlike other cancers for which the reason is unknown. It is a preventable cancer that can be prevented with lifestyle modification. "There is a need to raise awareness to quit tobacco and early check-ups for early pickup of the disease," Gupta said. In India, nearly two-thirds of cancer cases are detected late likely due to low adoption of proper screening, he said. Gupta added that the Cancer Mukt Bharat campaign aims to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer on individuals and communities through education and early detection. Cancers in head and neck rising, account for 26% cases in India: Study

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A new study suggests getting enough vitamin D and calcium is important for preventing cancers.</li><li>But choosing to take supplements isn't without other risks, including a potential for heart issues.</li></ul>Dietician and cancer prevention expert Cynthia Thomson knows you can't always diet or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-improve-longevity-supplements-vs-exercise-and-diet-2024-3">supplement</a> your way out of getting cancer."I was a dietician running marathons when I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and I was in my early 40s," Thomson, a University of Arizona professor, told Business Insider. "There's a lot of cancer that we can't prevent, that we have no idea why people are getting."But, as Thomson has discovered through decades of studying the effects of supplements on tens of thousands of people, getting enough calcium and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vitamin-d-and-longevity-anti-aging-2023-9">vitamin D</a> can make a clear difference to your risk of developing deadly diseases, including some cancers. In fact, a person's nutrient intake, which is largely influenced by their diet, is thought to be responsible for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(02)09958-0/abstract">about 30%</a> of their cancer risk.Her latest study, published Monday in the <a target="_blank" href="https://doi.org/10.7326/M23-2598">Annals of Internal Medicine</a>, followed more than 36,280 postmenopausal women who'd been randomly assigned to either take vitamin D and calcium or (unknowingly) get a placebo pill instead, for a period of about seven years.Over time, those supplements seemed to have a small, but measurable effect on reducing cancer deaths. But taking the supplements didn't come without risks.<h2>Significantly less breast and colon cancer in supplement-takers</h2><div type="image" title="caltrate vitamin d plus calcium" height="1575" width="2100" msid="108413361" hostid="261" sizebytes="179804"></div>After 22 years, when researchers looked back at how the supplement-takers did over time compared to the non-supplementing study participants, they found a 7% reduction in cancer-related deaths among women who took vitamin D and calcium supplements.The reductions were especially impressive for invasive breast cancer (19%), and colorectal cancer (31%), like what Thomson once had.But the news wasn't all good. Women in the study who took the two supplements together also had a modest but measurable 6% increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-causes-a-heart-attack-2019-3">heart disease</a>, which is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US.Thomson's team doesn't know for sure exactly what's behind that increase, but they suspect the difference may have been caused by the calcium supplements encouraging some more calcification of coronary arteries."I wouldn't want cardiologists to say 'no one should be taking calcium supplements,' or for oncologists to say 'everyone should be taking them' — we really need to look at individual profiles," Thomson said. "I think this is where we're going in medicine. It's not going to be one-size-fits-all."Despite the potential heart risks, Thomson still takes her vitamin D and calcium supplements every day.But she says <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-peter-attia-takes-longevity-anti-aging-magnesium-vitamin-d-2023-10">you shouldn't just copy</a> her regimen. Taking 400 IU per day helped get her into the normal range on subsequent tests, a sign her strategy is working.</li><li>She suspected her diet, as a vegan-leaning "meat avoider" who gets some amount of calcium from foods like tofu, nuts, and salmon, may be just a tad low on calcium. (You can't properly measure calcium levels via blood tests, since the body tends to tightly regulate this system by pulling calcium from our muscles if it's not getting enough in food.)</li><li>Finally, she's more worried about her personal history of colorectal cancer than any risk of calcifying her coronary arteries. Her calculation might've been different if she had a personal or family history of kidney stones.</li></ol><h2>Think of supplements as an addition to your diet, not a shortcut</h2><div type="image" title="mediterranean diet" height="842" width="1056" msid="108413363" hostid="261" sizebytes="128906"></div>Thomson, like other leading researchers, says if you really want to have a big impact on your risk of developing chronic diseases like cancer, then first and foremost <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anti-aging-foods-brain-heart-health-better-immunity-longevity-2023-9">eat a diverse and healthy diet rich in plants</a> like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. This is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loma-linda-blue-zone-longevity-secrets-of-seventh-day-adventists-2023-11">same strategy long-lived people around the world</a> use."Supplements are just that — they're intended to supplement inadequacies in a diet," she said.Thomson knows that supplements will never erase a person's cancer risk.
