<ul class="summary-list"><li>My 8-year-old loves Lego blocks and has been asking for years to go to <keyword id="23618278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Legoland" source="keywords">Legoland</keyword>.</li><li>As a <keyword id="21623863" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="single-mom" source="keywords">single mom</keyword>, finances can be tight, and I needed to figure out how to make it happen.</li></ul>For years, my 8-year-old son has said he wants to be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lego-master-builders-life-size-sculptures-2016-7">master builder for The Lego Group</a>. So many of our bedtime stories were about Legoland, and I wanted to take him there as badly as he wanted to visit. It reminded me of visiting SeaWorld as a teenager and being inspired to study marine biology.<br /><br />However, as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/having-cleaning-person-takes-up-budget-but-its-worth-it-2022-4">single mom, finances can be tight</a>, and I knew it would take some strategic planning and scrimping to make the trip happen. Although some parents are willing to go into debt for their dream vacations, I'm not. I've always valued experiences over material things, but not if it breaks the bank.<br /><br /><h2><strong>We created a budget for our trip</strong></h2>In the weeks leading up to our trip, I asked my son to help create our itinerary with one activity per day. The highlight of the weeklong <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/los-angeles-kid-friendly-city-travel-guide-2024-8">vacation would be Legoland</a>, and we put together a list of attractions in the San Diego area that ranged from free options like the beach or low-cost museum visits to the pricier attractions.<br /><br />As I worked on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-dont-pay-for-accommodations-traveling-trusted-housesitters-review-2024">big-picture budget</a>, I also helped my son create his own. He had been really excited to hear a friend describe how his savings account grew money over time. So when we sold his bike for $80 early in the summer, I set the money aside in my high-yield savings account for his spending money.<br /><br />As for the trip itself, there were a few things I could take advantage of. I was able to cash in a couple of bonds that my grandfather purchased for me decades ago, I had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-collecting-air-miles-2017-9">air miles I could use for the short trip</a> from Oregon to California, and we had access to a family timeshare. Had we not had some help with these expenses, I likely would have shortened the trip or continued saving for another year.<br /><br />I focused on finding deals for the rental car, food, and attractions and saved in those areas by visiting mid-week and buying tickets that included meals.<br /><br />My one splurge was an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/legoland-new-york-resort-hotel-family-review-2023-10">overnight stay at the Legoland hotel</a>, which was completely worth it when I saw my son's smile as we walked into our Ninjago-themed room and played with the Lego bricks in the pool.<br /><br /><h2><strong>We talked about how much money we had to spend each day</strong></h2>We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-new-yorker-found-surprising-about-visiting-california-photos-2021-12">landed in San Diego</a> early Monday afternoon, dropped off our bags, and headed to Trader Joe's to grab snacks and breakfast fixings for the week. My son was amazed by everything he saw — the palm trees, the playground we spotted across the street, and our big studio room. I thought back to the many trips I'd taken over the years while enjoying seeing the city through his eyes.<br /><br />My son had a nice sum to spend during the week. He'd been saving his allowance, and I matched the proceeds from the sale of his bike. He had earned a meager amount of interest in the savings account, and we talked about how, had the money stayed in the account longer, he would have earned more.<br /><br />He wanted a $150 Lego set at Legoland, so he knew he had limited funds to spend elsewhere. At the start of each day, we discussed how much he had to spend, and then he carefully made a decision at each attraction. Despite this, there were some additional requests for me to buy things, and although I stayed firm on most, I did give in to some, like Ninjago pajamas, which he needed anyway. He loved wearing them around the park the next day.<br /><br />Every place we went had souvenir penny machines. I've collected these since I was a kid and was excited when Noah asked to get them, happily contributing the 50 cents or a dollar it took for the little memento. I stood behind him and thought about which imprint I'd choose as he carefully picked his own, like the Komodo dragon at the San Diego Zoo or the dolphins at SeaWorld.<br /><br /><h2><strong>We slowed down and enjoyed free things</strong></h2>As our energy decreased in the waning days of our trip, we slowed down. At first, I'd really wanted to maximize our time and take in all that we could, hoping to "get our money's worth," but by Friday, we needed a break. A late start wouldn't hurt our visit to SeaWorld, which was open until 8 p.m.<br /><br />We hung out in our studio, eating breakfast and lunch there before heading out. It was a nice reminder that vacation doesn't always have to be about seeing and doing everything; it can also be about relaxing.<br /><br />We spent our last day with friends, enjoying a hike overlooking La Jolla and eventually moving closer to the beach to watch the waves and sea lions. Our activity that day was another beautiful reminder that nature is free and entertaining in its own right.<br /><br />In the days following the trip, I felt exhausted by the daily money decisions yet relieved and satisfied that I navigated them. Creating meaningful moments doesn't require going into debt; instead, it can be about intention and focus on what's important.<br /><br />My son will never know how much I spent on that trip. What he'll remember is seeing the panda at the San Diego Zoo and driving the cars at Legoland. I've managed to stay on a tight <keyword id="19936553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget" source="keywords">budget</keyword> even in upscale destinations like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/budget-trip-maldives-cheap-hotel-flights-travel-guide-2024-1">the Maldives</a> — where I spent less than $1,000 on a five-day trip — and backpacked on a few dollars a day in cities like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sleeper-train-overnight-thailand-bangkok-chiang-mai-review-tickets-guide-2022-8">Bangkok</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/backpacking-things-to-know-hotels-budget-asia-malaysia-singapore-2022-5">Kuala Lumpur</a>.<br /><br />But on a recent trip to Timor-Leste in May — a country in the South Pacific only slightly larger in size than the state of Connecticut — I found budgeting more difficult than ever. The country comprises half of Timor Island — which it shares with Indonesia — and is known for its unspoiled waters and vibrant coral reefs.<br /><br />It's one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://ceoworld.biz/2024/01/15/revealed-here-are-the-least-visited-countries-in-the-world-2024/">world's least-visited countries</a>, making airfare and hotel rates more expensive than many countries in <keyword id="19915288" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia" source="keywords">Asia</keyword>.<br /><br />Timor-Leste is on the United Nations' list of the world's <a target="_blank" href="https://unctad.org/topic/least-developed-countries/list">least-developed countries</a>. It's also one of the more expensive countries in the region, due to high trade costs, <a target="_blank" href="https://development.asia/policy-brief/increasing-timor-lestes-global-competitiveness#:~:text=Goods%20and%20services%20in%20Timor,developing%20countries%20in%20the%20Pacific.">according to Development Asia</a>. In addition to the centavo, which is only minted in coins, the country <a target="_blank" href="https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/timor-leste">uses the US dollar</a>, too — a stronger currency than what's used in nearby countries, including Indonesia and Australia.<br /><br />Here's a breakdown of what I spent in Timor-Leste.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="The view of a statue on an island from an airplane seat" height="2259" width="3012" msid="111973343" hostid="261"></div><h2>Cost of return plane tickets from Bali to Dili: $500</h2>Getting to Timor-Leste isn't easy. When I was traveling, Bali, Indonesia, and Darwin, Australia, were the only cities with flights to Dili, the capital, where the country's only international airport is located. Only two airlines — the Indonesian <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airasia-best-airline-in-the-world-low-cost-budget-2023-7">low-cost carrier</a> Citilink and the local airline Aero Dili — fly between Bali and Dili. The flight from Bali is less than two hours long — while there are no direct flights from the US to Bali, stopovers through bigger airports like Singapore and Tokyo are often used.<br /><br />I booked a return ticket with Citilink about three weeks before departure for $500 — which was around $100 cheaper than Aero Dili. This included a front-row seat reservation and a 44-lb checked bag allowance.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Mountains on the horizon of Timor-Leste" height="2218" width="2957" msid="111973340" hostid="261"></div><h2>Cost of hotel stay for three nights: $500</h2>Timor-Leste only has a handful of three-star hotels and no luxury accommodations. While <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=d8a8d663cf225f9f1af6c2c8b57fcbf5a32c449e75ec22631b46dca219696226&amp;postID=668750ec5c62a271edc8447d&amp;postSlug=least-visited-countries-timor-leste-flights-hotel-budget-2024-7&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hilton.com%2Fen%2Fhotels%2Fdiltshi-hilton-dili-palm-springs%2F"><u>Hilton</u></a> plans to open a hotel in Dili's business district later this year, there were no international hotel chains when I visited.<br /><br />Many travelers stay in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-ireland-island-great-blasket-hotel-job-caretaker-guest-house-2024-1">guesthouses</a> by the beach, which only have basic amenities such as fans and mosquito nets. I booked an entry-level room for three nights at Timor Plaza Hotel &amp; Apartments for around $500, including tax.<br /><br />While the room itself was basic — and had its fair share of critters — the hotel had a stunning view of Atauro, one of Timor Leste's two offshore islands. It was also located above a small mall, which made eating out easy.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Woman riding on a scooter in Timor-Leste." height="3024" width="4032" msid="111973344" hostid="261"></div><h2>Cost of transportation: $90</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-robotaxi-ride-hailing-app-video-2024-6">Ride-hailing services</a> weren't available in Timor-Leste, and taxi services are limited to the city center. I was quoted $20 per hour to rent a car, and I wasn't willing to pay $200 for a day.<br /><br />Fortunately, I met a local guide who charged $30 per day to tour me around Dili on a scooter. I found it an inexpensive and efficient way to travel from the gorgeous white-sand beaches to the beautiful tropical mountains.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="A sandwich with sausage and a cup of iced Timorese coffee" height="2263" width="3017" msid="111973342" hostid="261"></div><h2>Cost of food: $180</h2>Food in Dili is surprisingly international. Despite only a handful of international food chains — including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/review-cheapest-cheeseburgers-fast-food-mcdonalds-wendys-burger-king-2024-6">Burger King</a> and Gloria Jean's Coffee — operating in Timor Leste, Western food like burgers are ubiquitous. I ate mostly local Timorese food and Indonesian fare.<br /><br />I had set a daily budget of around $60 for meals, drinks, and snacks for my guide and me. While a plate of nasi goreng — Indonesian fried rice — costs around $3 to $4 in Bali, I paid around $15 for the dish in Dili. At a local café, I paid $8 for a small plate of jackfruit, carrots, lettuce, and tortillas.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="A Timorese woman weaving cloth in a market" height="1818" width="2424" msid="111973345" hostid="261"></div><h2>Miscellaneous costs: $415</h2>Before my trip, I spent $15 on an eSIM and $20 on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/travel-insurance/best-travel-insurance-companies">travel insurance</a>. When I arrived in Timor-Leste, I had to pay $30 for the visa-on-arrival, which allowed me to stay in the country for 30 days.<br /><br />Souvenirs in Timor-Leste are expensive. I purchased a small handmade bag and sarong from the local Tais market — a type of weave indigenous to the country — for around $70. I snagged a handmade belt at another shop for $30. I bought several bags of Timorese coffee — the country's second-biggest export — for $50.<br /><br />I didn't expect to find Western makeup products in Timor-Leste, so I bought a few items when I did find them at a local grocery for $70, although at a substantial markup compared to what they cost on retailers like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-original-book-business-booming-2024-6">Amazon</a>.<br /><br />I didn't spend much on sightseeing as most of my time was spent swimming at the beach and exploring the tropical mountains. For activities, I spent $30 on a massage at a traditional Chinese spa and $50 on a half-day scuba diving trip at the coast. I budgeted about $50 for tips.<br /><br />While traveling to Timor-Leste was expensive, the stunning views were worth it. I vowed to do the same and got a job at a bookshop to pay for it. There's nothing like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overworked-years-until-child-realized-work-doesnt-care-2024-7">working all hours</a> to make you appreciate money, and I vowed not to waste a cent when I did get to see the world.</p><p>After a trip to watch wildlife in Tanzania at 18, I caught the travel bug in a big way which made me even more motivated to save as much cash as possible for future trips. Now, 20 years later, I've <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-beautiful-places-to-visit-from-expert-2024-6">visited 86 countries</a> on a shoestring budget.</p><p>While independent backpacking conjures up images of having to sacrifice various experiences, it doesn't have to be that way. For example, when I went on a trip to the Kinabatangan River in Borneo to see wildlife like pygmy elephants and orangutans, I found the direct contact details online for a homestay.</p><p>The owner had a boat, and he took us out three times a day to see Malaysia's wildlife over the two days we stayed there. While my partner and I watched the incredible elephants, the other boats arrived, with tourists paying $900 to be there, compared to the $130 that we paid for two nights, all of our meals, and four boat trips. (I noted the names of the companies to find the price online afterward, and I was shocked at the difference.) Places like Chile and Argentina have great long-distance bus services, and some even have attendants who dish out cheese and ham sandwiches.</p><p>It helps to embrace <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-public-transportation-new-york-city-ferry-opinion-2023-8">multiple types of transport</a>, too, especially in smaller countries. Hopping from one kind of transportation to another allowed us to reach places we wouldn't be able to see if we'd just stuck to one. This is particularly great for countries in South and Southeast Asia, as a small vehicle can help you get around the heavy traffic in their busy cities.</p><p>However, if this is your plan, make sure to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-cost-price-driver-license-comparison-2018-9">convert your driver's license into an international one</a>; otherwise, you might get pulled over and fined by the police.</p><h2 id="4fed5d99-15f4-4ca6-83dd-d308b0a36578">Check to see if you can take your own transportation through national parks</h2><p>If you love wildlife and want to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-worst-national-parks-usa-from-man-visited-each-one-2024-4">explore national parks</a> on your own, research whether you can avoid paying for a tour by taking your own transportation through the park. Some national parks allow you to register on their booking system to avoid paying commission to an agent.</p><p>In places like Baku National Park in Borneo, you can get your own boat without taking an official tour. If that is the case, make sure to book the tours while you're in the country, as it will save you money. I did this in The Gambia, and it was much cheaper than the ones offered by the airline. The money also went to a local company and local causes instead of a corporation.</p><p>Just because you're on a budget doesn't mean you need to deny yourself an occasional splurge, and I set a little aside so that I can treat myself on each vacation. Usually, I eat street food, which I love, or buy food from supermarkets, but if a bar or restaurant is particularly special, I try to visit. In Singapore, for example, I went to the Raffles Hotel to try one of its famous <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cocktails-around-the-world-2019-3">Singapore Sling cocktails</a>, an experience you can't recreate elsewhere. Budgeting can be hard work, so we all deserve a little treat!</p>

Many of these invitations have also required me to travel.</p><p>To maximize pricey flights, I've leveraged weddings to explore places like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/palm-beach-county-florida-migration-businesses-financial-services-new-york-2021-4">West Palm Beach</a>, Cleveland, and even my own city. For their first road trip to Florida, Apple Maps estimated their journey would take 18 hours. So far, the cheapest pet fee they paid was $30 at a Best Western Hotel, while the most expensive was at a Marriot hotel, where they say the pet fee was $75. Airbnbs usually charge around $50 for pets, they observed. </p><p>Salley estimates they would spend less than $1,500 on a weeklong trip to Florida if they went alone. He added that the couple would have also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-travel-for-free-tips-from-solo-backpacker-2023-9">saved money by staying in hostels</a> and<strong> </strong>cheaper places in the past.</p><p>But with Koda, their total expenditure on that trip was around $3,000.</p><p>For longer trips with Koda, they set a maximum budget of $6,000 for seven weeks. "We also don't try to spend that much, but we definitely set a lot more aside for worst-case scenarios," Salley said.</p><p>They recalled a harrowing incident when Koda had diarrhea 14 times on the road. Of the respondents, 37% also said that being unable to bring their dog on their travels is their top annoyance.</p><p>As more pet owners prefer to travel with their pets, some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-your-pets-are-transported-on-commercial-airlines-2021-10">commercial airlines</a> are simplifying the process to bring pets on board. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-fly-with-pets-policy-change-2024-3">American Airlines</a> updated its policy in March to allow flyers to board with their pet in addition to a carry-on bag.</p><p>A growing number of shared private jet flights allows owners to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-with-pets-international-travel-charter-flights-empty-leg-jet-2023-9">travel more comfortably</a> with their pets — albeit with a hefty price tag. In April, BI reported on pet subscription service BarkBox's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barkbox-ultra-luxury-private-jet-flights-people-dogs-2024-4">launch of its ultra-luxury private jet carrier</a>, Bark Air. The round-trip from New York to Los Angeles costs $12,000 and comes with "dog champagne" and a private chef.</p><p>Some pet owners have gone a step further by arranging private jets for their pets. Hong Kong investment banker Gladys Tsoi previously told BI that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-jet-vacation-japan-toy-poodle-dog-expensive-holiday-2024-6">she spent $38,000 </a>to fly to Japan with her pet poodle on a private jet. <ul class="summary-list"><li>China's thrifty consumers are boosting Asian companies with wallet-friendly offerings.</li><li>Companies like Japan's Saizeriya, Yum China, and Fast Retailing have recently reported strong sales.</li></ul><p>China's consumers are tightening up their belts, but not everyone's a loser. Some companies are riding the frugal wave.</p><p>Saizeriya, a restaurant chain from Japan — a country well familiar with a prolonged downturn — is one company making bank from China's downturn.</p><p>In its fiscal year that ended August 31, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.saizeriya.co.jp/PDF/irpdf001505.pdf">Saizeriya</a>, which serves Italian food at budget prices in several Asian countries, reported operating profit nearly doubled from a year ago to 14.8 billion Japanese yen, or $99.6 million.</p><p>Hideharu Matsutani, the company's president, said at a Wednesday press conference that operating profit from its China operations "rose significantly," per <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Food-Beverage/Thrifty-Chinese-diners-bring-record-profit-for-Japan-s-Saizeriya">Nikkei.</a></p><p>Matsutani said Saizeriya is now using its strategy for Japan in the neighboring market because "conditions in China in some respects look like Japan after its economic bubble burst."</p><p>There are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-heading-for-lost-decade-needs-reform-growth-japanification-2024-2">similarities</a> between <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japan-millennial-salaryman-job-wages-rent-home-ownership-birthrate-2023-5#the-typical-japanese-millennial-is-financially-conservative-having-grown-up-watching-their-countrys-lost-decade-suffer-from-a-devastating-economic-crisis-2"><u>Japan's "Lost Decade"</u></a> of economic stagnation in the 1990s, after the country's asset and credit bubbles burst, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-property-crisis-vanke-get-uglier-analyst-charlene-chu-2024-3">China's economic downturn</a> now.</p><p>After Japan's asset bubble implosion, consumption in Japan witnessed a fundamental shift, as people who previously would pay for quality and convenience increasingly moved to buying discount goods, consultancy <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/McKinsey/Industries/Consumer%20Packaged%20Goods/Our%20Insights/The%20new%20Japanese%20consumer/The%20new%20Japanese%20consumer.pdf">McKinsey</a> wrote in a 2010 report.</p><p>Chinese consumers now appear to be moving in the same direction as their Japanese peers, trading down for cheaper products — even if the trend also presents challenges for budget-friendly retailers.</p><p>Still, investors appear to agree with the strategy of offering more value for money. Shares of Saizeriya listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange are up 7.7% this year-to-date.</p><h2 id="fa258e48-944f-4589-9a00-fdd7e405730d">Living well but at the 'best value for money'</h2><p>In China, too, times have changed, and people are looking for cheaper products, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-economy-young-shoppers-looking-dupes-substitutes-pingti-fashion-travel-2024-9">dupes and substitutes.</a></p><p>"Consumers are increasingly rational and strategic, focusing on obtaining the best value for their money," said MingYii Lai, a strategy consultant at Beijing-based market research firm Daxue Consulting, told Business Insider.</p><p>Shoppers are seeking high-quality experiences and products at lower costs while aiming to live well, she said.</p><p>People are increasingly choosing to spend on experiences, like travel and food, rather than buying products.</p><p>"Economic pressures and changing priorities are driving a move towards more economical spending," said Lai.</p><p>The ethos has benefited companies with budget offerings, including Yum China, which operates KFC and Pizza Hut in the country.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ir.yumchina.com/quarterly-results">Yum China'</a>s second-quarter operating profit grew 4%, to $266 million, from a year ago thanks to aggressive budget-friendly deals.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fastretailing.com/eng/ir/financial/summary.html">Fast Retailing</a> — the parent company of Uniqlo, known for affordable clothes — reported net profit growth of 25.6% for its full year ending August 2024 thanks to robust sales in both the domestic and international markets. Sales in Greater China grew by 9.2%, to 677 billion yen.</p><p>Yum China shares are up 11% this year to date, while Fast Retailing shares are up 56% over the same period.</p><h2 id="af7e4a77-fdf8-44fe-9f62-eb06a273ab9e">Intense competition</h2><p>However, China's market is a fast and furious one — even for winners — and the country's economic downturn has created cut-throat competition with aggressive price wars.</p><p>Uniqlo said on Thursday that while sales in mainland China were "strong" in the first half of its fiscal year, they were "lackluster" in the second half.</p><p>Some consumers are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-economy-young-shoppers-looking-dupes-substitutes-pingti-fashion-travel-2024-9">going straight to the source</a> to buy original equipment manufacturer goods or white label products to replace items in a wide range of categories — even if they're just ordinary products.</p><p>The race for Chinese consumers' yuan is exemplified in the boba tea business, where an all-out price war is changing market dynamics for what is considered a still affordable indulgence in a penny-pinching era.</p><p>As China's economic malaise deepened, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/AFP/status/1835337779993256178">boba tea went from</a> premium pricing around $3.50 to $5.50 on average to as little as $1 or less<strong> </strong>over the last few years.</p><p>"All the players are trying to introduce low-price offers. So, either you can use a low price range, or try to be very creative in terms of pricing promotion so as to stay ahead of the market," Jason Yu, the Greater China managing director at Kantar Worldpanel, a consumer research group, told BI.</p><p>In KFC's case, its marketing and pricing strategies cater to both ends of the market, with wagyu beef products at the higher end and promotions like 15 wings for under $3, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/western-brands-china-kfc-mcdonalds-american-fast-food-all-in-2024-9">BI's Matthew Low</a> reported last month.</p><p>As Allison Malmsten, another analyst from Daxue Consulting, told BI: "the rich are comfortable to spend, while the middle class chooses cheaper options."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="19945948" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Spirit-Airlines" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Spirit Airlines" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Spirit Airlines">Spirit Airlines</keyword> may file for Chapter 11 amid major debts after a failed merger with JetBlue.</li><li>The airline is saddled with debt of about $3.3 billion.</li></ul>Spirit Airlines stock plunged in premarket trading on Friday after a report that it may file for <keyword id="20424206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chapter-11-bankruptcy" source="keywords">Chapter 11 bankruptcy</keyword> protection.<br /><br />Following a failed merger with <keyword id="20245146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JetBlue-Airways" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="JetBlue Airways" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="JetBlue Airways">JetBlue Airways</keyword>, Spirit had been grappling with heavy losses, making it difficult to manage its $3.3 billion debt load that includes $1.1 billion of secured bonds due within the next year, The Wall Street Journal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/spirit-airlines-in-talks-with-bondholders-over-terms-of-potential-bankruptcy-filing-fdd23fae?st=oS9e7Q&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink">reported</a> late Thursday.<br /><br />The <keyword id="20376051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-airline" source="keywords">budget airline</keyword> is also exploring restructuring options to alleviate some of its financial pressures, though no filing is imminent, the Journal reported.<br /><br />The report pushed the carrier's stock down as much as 36% in premarket trade on Friday. The shares have fallen 86% this year.<br /><br /><keyword id="23550986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO-Ted-Christie" source="keywords">CEO Ted Christie</keyword> said on an August earnings call that Spirit was in talks with advisors and bondholders over its debt.<br /><br />While Spirit faces a turbulent future with a potential Chapter 11 filing, it isn't necessarily a death sentence for the airline. Rather, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/credit-score/what-is-chapter-11-bankruptcy">Chapter 11</a> allows businesses to reorganize their debts while continuing their operations. Other airlines have used the process to stay afloat.<br /><br />Most recently, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scandinavian-airlines-filed-chapter-11-bankruptcy-after-pilot-strike-sas-2022-7">Scandinavian Airlines</a> filed for Chapter 11 in the US in 2022 following a pilot strike. The airline underwent a $3 billion restructuring plan to revise its fleet and raise money, while continuing to operate. The company emerged from bankruptcy in August.<br /><br />In 2005, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-went-bankrupt-bounced-back-successful#delta-air-lines-filed-for-bankruptcy-in-2005-and-spent-a-year-and-a-half-restructuring-3" target="_blank">Delta Air Lines</a> filed for bankruptcy after shedding 6,000 jobs and slashing $1 billion in labor costs. By optimizing its Atlanta hub and increasing its international routes, the company recovered from its financial troubles and remains one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-and-worst-airlines-in-the-us-according-to-the-points-guy-2024-6" target="_blank">largest airlines</a> in the US.<br /><br />A potential bankruptcy filing could serve as a similar lifeline for Spirit's management of debt and finances.<br /><br />This came as Spirit <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-airlines-ticket-changes-bundled-fares-bags-snacks-premium-seats-2024-7">bumped</a> its ticketing prices in July, shifting away from its ultra-low-cost model to boost revenue after suffering a $143 million loss in the first quarter of this year and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-spirit-southwest-jetblue-struggle-profit-scrambling-changes-tickets-seats-2024-8">$193 million</a> loss in the second quarter.<br /><br />Spirit has been bogged by annual losses since before the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the travel industry's recovery, and continues to struggle against larger airlines that offer competitive fares.<br /><br />The airline has cut routes, furloughed pilots, and shrunk its operational capacity by nearly 20%.<br /><br />Spirit Airlines did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider outside normal working hours.<br /><br /><em>Correction: October 4, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated the year Delta filed for bankruptcy protection. And as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-kicks-review-price-rare-find-under-30k-2024-10">more models flood the market</a>, you can get a particularly good deal on a used EV.</p><p>But shelling out thousands of dollars on an unfamiliar piece of technology (especially one that's been around the block a few times) is daunting for some shoppers.</p><p>Aside from wondering <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-car-affordable-kia-ford-chevy-hyundai-nissan-2022-6">which car to buy</a>, used-EV shoppers might be wondering whether the battery could die. Shoppers on a budget might also be looking for more ways to save money, as EV tax credits broadened to include used electric cars in January 2023.</p><p>The research can be a lot to take on at once. We talked to car-buying experts to demystify the process.</p><h2>Consider where and how much you drive</h2><p>Scott Case, the cofounder and CEO of Recurrent, a startup that tracks EV battery health, recommended starting by considering how far you typically drive and the climate you live in — those factors will affect how much range you'll want, as EVs perform best in temperate weather and can't drive quite as far in cold temperatures.</p><p>"Let's say you live in Florida and you drive 30 to 50 miles every day — you can pretty much buy anything," Case said. On the other hand, people who travel 150 miles daily and live in the occasionally frigid Midwest would need to shop around for a long-range vehicle.</p><div type="image" title="A gray Tesla Cybertruck plugged in at a public charging station." height="1150" width="1533" msid="114294136" hostid="261" sizebytes="313240"></div><p>Most older electric cars don't have the range of the latest offerings — you might find models with estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency of only 80 to 120 miles.</p><h2>Battery range will degrade over time</h2><p>Anyone who's owned a smartphone knows that lithium-ion batteries wear out over time. Pretty much the same goes for EVs.</p><p>As the years go by, cycles of charging and driving wear out an EV's battery pack, reducing driving range. The vehicle-data firm Geotab has estimated that EV batteries <a href="https://www.geotab.com/blog/ev-battery-health/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tend to lose about 2% of their capacity each year</a>.</p><p>The good news is that an EV's battery is unlikely to fail completely or render the car useless.</p><p>But understanding how much life a vehicle has left isn't all that simple. Case said that exposure to extreme temperatures, frequent trips to powerful DC fast chargers, and variations in battery chemistry mean some used cars perform better than others with identical mileage.</p><div type="image" title="A charging cable extending from a Tesla Supercharger to a Chevrolet Equinox EV." height="3024" width="4032" msid="114294138" hostid="261" sizebytes="789912"></div><p>Jim Fish, a vice president of Opus IVS, a tech-focused collision-repair company, said the best question to ask about a battery's care is how often it was left below 20% and above 80% of its charge.</p><p>Leaving a battery too close to empty or on a full charge for too long affects its ability to hold a charge, Fish said.</p><p>"Of course, you might struggle to find out the truth to that question," Fish said.</p><p>Recurrent provides reports on EV battery health aimed at helping shoppers choose between cars.</p><h2>You can get up to $4,000 off thanks to federal tax credits</h2><p>At the start of last year, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-state-electric-car-vehicle-tax-credits-rebates-qualify-2023-1">used-EV tax credit went into effect</a> as part of a larger incentive program in the Inflation Reduction Act. Automotive retail analysts described it as a welcome change for EV shoppers on a budget.</p><p>To <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-tax-credit-suv-tesla-model-y-ford-mach-e-2023-2">qualify for the credit</a>, the vehicle must be purchased at a dealership so that the dealer can report the required information to the IRS.</p><p>The buyer must be purchasing the vehicle for personal use and not for resale, must not be the original owner of the vehicle, must not be able to be claimed as a dependent, and must not have used any other clean-vehicle credit in the previous three years. Income caps for buyers range from $75,000 to $150,000, depending on their tax-filing status.</p><p>The vehicle must have a sale price of $25,000 or less and must be at least two model years old.</p><p>Many states also have tax incentives for purchasing EVs. More detailed information and required forms can be found on the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/used-clean-vehicle-credit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IRS's website</a>.</p>
