India has become the largest 'connected' nation in the world with 800 million users, <keyword id="15760524" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-minister-of-state-for-electronics" source="Orion">Union Minister of State for Electronics</keyword> and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said. Speaking at the India Internet Governance Forum 2022 (IIGF2022), the minister said that 5G and the largest rural broadband connectivity network project at <keyword id="2791195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharatnet" source="Orion">BharatNet</keyword> will have 1.2 billion Indian users constituting the single largest presence of the global internet. "We also expect further technological innovations as well as updated regulatory policies to remain relevant. The deep involvement by all stakeholders will be the third leg of this 'Global Standard Cyber Law Framework' that, we hope, will catalyse the Indian Internet and the economy," Chandrasekhar told the gathering at the three-day event in the national capital on Sunday. The IIGF2022 brought together all stakeholders in the global Internet governance ecosystem, including government, industry, civil society and academia. "We are looking at building laws which ensure the privacy, protection, data, security and safety of our citizens. Another drove to restaurants to access <keyword id="11897865" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="internet" source="Orion">internet</keyword>.</li></ul>When Brian Wilcox tried to talk to a doctor over a Zoom call during the COVID-19 pandemic, the conversation ended abruptly because of his poor internet connection.Wilcox, who lives with his wife in rural North Carolina, told Insider the couple never managed to watch a movie or YouTube videos in high definition (HD), FaceTime, Zoom or stream content — until their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-customers-frustrated-price-hikes-deposits-customer-services-2022-4">Starlink</a> kit arrived.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-sent-starlink-satellite-internet-terminals-ukraine-2022-6">Starlink</a>, SpaceX's satellite internet service, was delivered to Wilcox in May 2021. Since Wilcox set it up, he said he's been able to use streaming services, watch HD videos, and access local stations using web browsers.His wife, a teacher, could finally connect to Zoom calls and meetings thanks to Starlink, Wilcox said."For those of us who live 'off the paved road,' it brings us into the 21st century," he said.For many Americans, a life without internet connection means restrictions to daily essentials. Insider spoke with various Starlink users who explained how the internet service had changed their life for the better. They sent Insider confirmation of their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-customer-service-non-existent-satellite-internet-deposit-contact-2022-1">Starlink</a> orders and purchases to verify they were users.<h2>Education and work lives improve</h2>Joshua and Jennifer Purcell from Pennsylvania told Insider they struggled to download and upload documents for work via their hotspot internet."I was always having to go to parking lots or restaurants to have a better internet connection," Jennifer said. Since ordering <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-most-valuable-american-startup-valuation-billion-2022-5">Starlink</a>, Jennifer said her professional life has improved and she and her children are able to work remotely from home. Despite Starlink costing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-public-beta-how-to-join-price-cost-subscription-2020-10">$600</a> upfront, she said they had saved around $133 a month after ditching their old hotspot internet and dish network.Another customer who found Starlink <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-starlink-internet-hike-prices-customers-rising-inflation-2022-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">cost-effective</a> is Daniel Krueger from Michigan. He told Insider he's saved $180 a month by switching from a well-known satellite internet provider to Starlink."Starlink has changed my life in that I am able to work from home, and have whatever entertainment and education resource I want, and am able to live in a wonderful rural area," Krueger said. His son studies advanced computer science, which wouldn't be possible without Starlink, he added.<h2>Connecting RVs to the internet</h2>It's not just households that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-customer-service-cancel-deposit-wait-months-satellite-internet-2021-9">Starlink</a> has helped, it's also a great addition to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-launches-rv-internet-service-2022-5">RVs</a>. Christopher Bowman, a Starlink user based in the Northern California mountains, told Insider he lives permanently in a RV and has used the internet service for work and pleasure since he got the kit in January."As a full-time RVer, finding good internet is almost impossible," Bowman said. Bowman, who runs a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/Minimalish/videos">YouTube</a> channel, said it would take days to upload videos with his previous satellite internet provider. With Starlink, uploading videos takes a few hours, he said. "I'm in a bad situation," he said.Another preorder customer emailed Insider to say that he paid a $100 deposit in April to get Starlink for his father who lives on a secluded cattle ranch in northern California. "Months went by and not a peep," he said. However, it stressed that this is not enough for a 'mobile first' country. The Forum said that it is unfortunate that as many as 45,180 villages in India do not have any 4G coverage at all. "While this upgradation in minimum broadband speed is indeed a big milestone, India still has a long way to go to catch up with major regimes like the US where the regulator (FCC) has already prescribed a minimum broadband speed of 25Mbps," said the BIF. Even Bangladesh has prescribed a higher minimum broadband speed of 5Mbps. Still, the move will help in lifting the overall quantum of per capita data consumption and improve the service experience. Being a 'mobile first' country, India heavily relies on mobile broadband with almost 98 per cent of the broadband users accessing it via their mobile phones. "2Mbps may not sound good enough for the modern broadband era as one would need much higher speeds for satisfactory experience in applications viz. telecommuting, file downloading, video conferencing, streaming video - both SD &amp; HD," said <keyword id="1146565" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tv-ramachandran" source="Orion">TV Ramachandran</keyword>, President, BIF. The solution to this problem could be satellite broadband connectivity that will cover even remote areas where telecom towers or fibre connections are hard to reach. There are already three companies planning to provide satellite broadband internet in India, and the latest to join is Tata group’s Nelco. According to a <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/pact-with-telesat-likely-for-satellite-broadband/amp_articleshow/85190916.cms">report</a> by ET Telecom, Nelco is planning to offer satellite broadband services in India through the Canadian firm Telesat’s Lightspeed brand. Both companies are in the final stages of the arrangement, and plan to offer its services in India by 2024, the report added. Satellite broadband services aim to solve problems that mobile internet or fibre broadband can’t but it’s also the most expensive of the three. Tata and Telesat plan to work on the business-to-business (B2B) model wherein the satellite bandwidth will be offered to telcos so that they can provide to areas where mobile connectivity is weak. The two companies also plan to work on ways to make satellite broadband affordable in India. Telesat’s global plan for satellite broadband services include an investment of almost $5 billion for a constellation of around 298 LEO satellites. Although expensive, LEO satellites offer stronger signals and faster speeds than traditional fixed-satellite networks as they orbit closer to the Earth. Telesat and Tata plan to take things further with their satellite broadband services once the new Spacecom policy that should offer better clarity for LEO satellite systems operators and setting up in-country satellite gateways, is out. Tata group to offer satellite broadband services in India through Telesat’s Lightspeed brand

So in February 2021, Sbi, who lives in the mountains of North Carolina, paid a $100 deposit for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-customer-service-non-existent-satellite-internet-deposit-contact-2022-1">SpaceX Starlink</a> uplink kit.Sbi told Insider that since then, he'd heard nothing from <keyword id="11897862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword>'s satellite internet company, and hadn't received his uplink kit. The price of a Starlink uplink kit rose from $500 to $550 for customers that had already paid a deposit, and from $500 to $600 for new customers. The monthly Starlink subscription cost climbed from $99 to $110 for all users.At the end of March 2022, Sbi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-customer-service-cancel-deposit-wait-months-satellite-internet-2021-9">requested a refund</a> of his Starlink deposit because of the price hikes – but has had trouble getting his money back because he can't get hold of the company."I feel I was scammed by Starlink," Sbi said. "This is not fair business practices. The company had my money for over a year, I need that money back, there shouldn't be any conditions on how to receive my money back."Sbi isn't the only customer frustrated with Starlink's delays, price hikes, and apparent lack of customer service.Rich Kecher, in south Virginia, said he'd had trouble getting his Starlink deposit refunded after about a year. He told Insider of an "outrageous lack of communication" from Starlink, which had pushed back its expected start-date for service in his area from November 2021 to late-2022."The price increase was the final straw," Kecher said.After ordering Starlink in April 2021, Denise Elise said she received two emails from Starlink — one a payment confirmation, the other about the price hike.She told Insider: "I don't want to cancel my order because I live in a rural area and need some kind of internet. I really want to try this." However, she said she was unhappy Starlink had increased prices before she'd received her uplink kit, adding that Musk was "making money on our money."Elise said Starlink hadn't responded to any of her emails.Tim Nash, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, received his Starlink kit in February 2022. One month later, he was hit by the Starlink service price hike.Despite paying more than he initially expected, Nash said Starlink was "well worth it" – but complained of customer service that was "nearly non-existent.""If your internet isn't working, how do you get help?" Nash said. "Weird model."Lluc Palerm, an analyst at Northern Sky Research, said Starlink customers hit by price rises for products they hadn't yet received "obviously" had "something to get angry about." He said Starlink was "not putting resources into customer services so it's natural that you get those kind of complaints."Palerm said: "They are a startup, and their main focus now is on the constellation and development, so it's not surprising that their customers have recieved very little support."He suggested Starlink terminals were in fact worth <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-satellite-dish-internet-user-terminal-cost-phased-array-2020-11">much more</a> than even their inflated cost, with the industry putting each terminal's value at around $2,000.Insider verified the four Starlink customers' complaints about the company through proof of purchase emails and correspondence they sent to SpaceX.SpaceX didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.
